Abstract:
This thesis examines the emergence and development of Socialist Realism in Australia. Among twentieth century cultural narratives a significant position is occupied by the theme of realism in the visual arts as related to the social and particularly to the political or ideological context. The issue of reality transformed into a visual representation of social relations plays an especially important role in Eastern European artistic practices, dominated by the Soviet model of Socialist Realism. Socialist Realism is a worldwide artistic and cultural phenomenon that arose under the influences of the social changes in Russia at the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century. This already defined aesthetic influenced thereafter the other European communist and non-communist countries, the United States of America and Australia. Historical approaches to the problem of Socialist Realist doctrine have established a number of cliches which should be thoroughly challenged by new interpretations, questioning the fixed definition of historical avant-gardes as supposedly positive and progressive while traditional realistic practices are seen as regressive and totalitarian. This thesis provides an insight into the artistic practice of Australian painters Noel Counihan. Yosl Bergner and Victor O’Connor, whose work embodies most of the contradictions and conflicts of the early Australian modernist scene. Modem art in Australia reflected the social and cultural situation in Europe in the 1930s and 1940s which shaped the emergence of Modernism in general in Australia. Australian artists in the Contemporary Art Society (1938) drew on European ideas in their attempts to develop a modem artistic practice that was both international and at the same time recognisably Australian. Important amongst these were a number of Socialist Realist artists whose artistic activity was strongly concerned about contemporary social issues, nationalism, national identity, economic depression and war, and the future of Australian society. This study grows out of some recent interdisciplinary initiatives in language theory and new directions in the study of visual art. The analytical model of systemic-functional semiotics of art, as developed in the work of Michael Halliday and Michael O’Toole is applied to an interpretation of a selection of key works by Australian Socialist Realists. Through a close semiotic analysis internal visual facts and the historical and social context of their work are integrated into a complex structure of signs and their meanings in an endeavour to interpret the appearance and development of the doctrine as a significant practice in Australia in the period of the 1930s and 1940s. This thesis is written in the conviction that visual representations are realisations of the social semiotic out of which they have grown, but at the same time they are a contribution to that social semiotic, participating in changing the context. My analysis of the Socialist Realist method which attempts to locate the picture within a rational system of perceptual codes suggests that works of art can be a starting point from which most of the aesthetic and social-political concerns of the period can be deduced.

Abstract:
This thesis explores and examines the history of Aboriginal child welfare policy in Western Australia. This historical scheme allowed thousands of Aboriginal children to be separated from their families. The policy of separating Aboriginal children from their families to be raised in the 'white way' was underpinned by an intrusive legislative scheme that made the Chief Protector of Aborigines or the Commissioner of Native Affairs the legal guardian of all Aboriginal children whether they had living parents or not. However, the statutes, Aboriginal specific or mainstream, remained relatively silent on the content of the guardianship duties, thus the need to turn to the common law to identify these duties. Overlaying these duties is the best interest of the child principle. Unfortunately, according to testimonies and some corroborating official documents, it appears that in many instances the State guardians failed to comply with their guardianship duties. This raises issues of State accountability and responsibility and legal liability. However the court system has failed to provide redress for the separated Aborigines. It is argued that the courts could provide redress by holding the guardianship relationship as a sub-category of the fiduciary relationship requiring protection of the non-economic personal interests of the separated Aboriginal children. It is acknowledged though, that the protection of noneconomic interest is foreign to Australian fiduciary jurisprudence. It is furthered acknowledged that the separated Aboriginal children face other legal hurdles. The lack of judicial redress means a political solution is required in response to the demands for justice by the separated Aboriginal children. It is argued that the examination of the guardianship relationship and breaches of guardianship duties provides added political force to the case for awarding reparations to the separated Aboriginal children.

Aboriginal Australians have a significantly lower health status than their non-Aboriginal counterparts. To facilitate healthy living practices necessary for good health, a high level investment is currently made in water services, on the assumption that there is a relationship between the volume and quality of water supplied with health outcomes, despite the high economic and environmental cost. This thesis investigates whether the current design supply criteria of 1000-1200 litres per person per day of water, meeting the Australian Drinking Water Quality Guidelines, is both sufficient and necessary to improve the health of Aboriginal Australians. The scope of the thesis is limited to the sufficiency of design guidelines although it necessarily also touches on the broader issues of Aboriginal health. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used to explore current water consumption patterns of consumers at multiple hierarchical levels (community, household and individual) and hence the requirements of physical infrastructure on which consumers depend. Multiple linear regression was used to consider factors correlated with supply volume, while metering was used at both the domestic and appliance level to determine where and how water was used. Meters were installed on fixtures in two houses in a community near Alice Springs. This was then complemented by qualitative information obtained through focus group discussions, key informant interviews and observation in the field. The appropriateness of the supply of high quality water for all uses was addressed by considering the volume of drinking water intake and its impact on the derivation of water quality guidelines. This was achieved by a face-to-face survey involving 57 volunteers. Fieldwork was conducted predominantly in three communities near Alice Springs although some additional data was collected in other communities in Western Australia and the Northern Territory. The results showed that the factors influencing water consumption were highly complex and variable between communities and individuals. However, there were some culturally specific needs identified in Aboriginal communities, such as the need for temperature and dust control, as well as the reduction of losses. The unique characteristics of each community made it difficult to provide a more precise estimate for design supply. As a result, overly conservative guidelines such as those already used are necessary in the short term despite there being no guarantee of improved health. In the long term, issues of community governance and capacity building will start to be addressed, and the realisation that social systems are both complex and dynamic will need to be reflected in policy. These issues were represented in a systemic conceptual model at the end of the thesis, which also highlighted inadequacies of reductionist approaches such as design supply guidelines. The thesis concluded that complex problem situations such as that of health, require a systems approach.

Maternal stress during pregnancy has been associated with poor perinatal outcomes. A decolonising methodological approach was adopted to explore the conceptualisation of stress with Aboriginal women in Perth, Western Australia. The findings provide insights into the experiences of ongoing colonisation and oppression experienced by Aboriginal women. This knowledge has important implications of how the health disparities between Indigenous women and infants and their non-Indigenous counterparts may be addressed in future health and social services policy.

Abstract:
Many misconceptions about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders stem from Australia’s period of colonisation in the 18th and 19th centuries when Indigenous people were believed to be inferior by European settlers. It is disturbing that after 200 years these negative ideas still exist and are often perpetuated through the mass media. Even though schools are well positioned to challenge these colonial values; unfortunately there are many factors which affect the depth and quality of teaching Aboriginal content, such as culture, history and contemporary issues. The government has aimed to disperse the inconsistencies associated with teaching Aboriginal perspectives by implementing a new Australian Curriculum with prescribed Aboriginal content. However, these changes will only have an impact if teachers are equipped and motivated to implement them. Therefore, understanding what influences teachers’ choice of content and approach to teaching Aboriginal Studies was a key aspect of this study. To explore these influences, non-Aboriginal teachers were interviewed at both government and independent schools. A desktop audit analysing the courses at Western Australian universities placed the participants’ responses into context of the pre-service and in-service learning available. An audit of the Australian Curriculum explored the expectations placed on teachers and the depth to which Aboriginal perspectives can be taught or avoided in secondary schools. This study identified four key issues that affected the teaching of Aboriginal curriculum content by non-Aboriginal teachers. These factors are: time management, school culture, teacher interest and preconceived ideas of both teachers and students. These issues must be addressed in order to improve the quality teaching of Aboriginal perspectives by standardising in-service learning and pre-service learning. Furthermore, improving cultural competency and acknowledging Aboriginal culture is critical at every school, regardless of the number of Aboriginal students. This study also revealed that the presence of an Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer could have a big impact in providing support, information and an Aboriginal presence at the school. Without these changes it will be difficult to disperse colonial values and challenge negative stereotypes

Des services d’archives spécialement créés entreprennent donc, en collaboration avec les historiens et les chercheurs, des actions d’identification, de préservation et de mise en valeur du patrimoine immatériel aborigène. La collecte de ce atrimoine, unique et unificateur, s’inscrit dans un courant de quête identitaire et de reconquête de l’histoire et du passé. La création d’une identité australienne et le développement de l'Aboriginalité, et au-delà la question de la Réconciliation, passe par la réintégration et la 're-connaissance', dans l’histoire de l’Australie, de la culture aborigène qui, auparavant, était considérée comme inexistante. La constitution d’archives orales permettra de connaître une communauté aborigène de son propre point de vue, tant sur son passé que sur son présent. Collecting testimonies from Indigenous peoples on events of the past, gathering tales or songs; recording traditional knowledge orally transmitted from generation to generation; and creating a recorded oral heritage is one of the main objectives and missions of specially created archive services in Australia. With the co-operation of historians and researchers, these archives are identifying, preserving, managing and developing an Indigenous oral heritage. This collection of a unique and unifying heritage is aimed at providing answers in an identity quest and the reevaluation of the national historical past. The creation of an Australian identity and the development of Aboriginality; within the framework of 'Reconciliation', must recognize Indigenous cultures which were for long considered as nonexistent in Australia's History. The creation of oral archives brings evidence of a developing Indigenous community, from its own point of view, both reflecting on its past and its present. The creation of such archives being a new and developing enterprise, the present research focuses on a definition of oral archives in Australia, analyzes their specificities as regards Indigenous peoples, and concludes on the consequences of that development

Abstract:
This thesis is a case study of some aspects of the adaptation of English words in several Australian Aboriginal languages, including Martu Wangka, Gamilaraay and Warlpiri. I frame my analysis within Smith’s (to appear) source-similarity model of loanword adaptation. This model exploits loanword-specific faithfulness constraints that impose maximal similarity between the perceived source form and its corresponding loan. Using this model, I show that the conflict of the relevant prosodic markedness constraints and loanword-specific faithfulness constraints drives adaptation. Vowel epenthesis, the most frequent adaptation strategy, allows the recoverability of a maximal amount of information about the source form and ensures that the loan conforms to the constraints of language-internal phonological grammar. Less frequent strategies including deletion and substitution occur in a restricted environment. The essence of the present analysis is minimal violation, a principle that governs loanword adaptation as well as other areas of phonology.

Abstract:
This longitudinal research explored the use of Aboriginal English (AE) dialect by Australian Aboriginal preschool children. Data from educator-child interactions was analysed for features of AE and change in dialect density across contexts. Interview data gathered from educators and carers about the children’s communicative competency was analysed qualitatively. Results confirmed Aboriginal children’s use of AE dialect and highlighted factors perceived by participants to affect their language and literacy development. Directions for future research are indicated.

Abstract:
National measures of achievement among Australian school children suggest that Aboriginal students, considered as a group, are those most likely to end their schooling without achieving minimal acceptable levels of literacy and numeracy. In view of the fact that many Aboriginal students dwell in metropolitan areas and speak English as a first language, many educators have been unconvinced that linguistic and cultural difference have been significant factors in this underachievement. This study explores the possibility that, despite intensive exposure to non-Aboriginal society, Aboriginal students in metropolitan Perth may maintain, through a distinctive variety of English, distinctive conceptualisation which may help to account for their lack of success in education. The study first develops a model of conceptualisations that emerge at the group level of cognition. The model draws on the notion of distributed representation to depict what are here termed cultural conceptualisations. Cultural conceptualisations are conceptual structures such as schemas and categories that members of a cultural group draw on in approaching experience. The study employs this model with regard to Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students attending schools in the Perth Metropolitan area. A group of 30 Aboriginal primary school students and a matching group of non-Aboriginal students participated in this study. A research technique called Association-Interpretation was developed to tap into cultural conceptualisations across the two groups of participants. The technique was composed of two phases: a) the 'association' phase, in which the participants gave associative responses to a list of 30 everyday words such as 'home' and 'family', and b) the 'interpretation' phase, in which the responses were interpreted from an ethnic viewpoint and compared within and between the two groups. The informants participated in the task individually. The analysis of the data provided evidence for the operation of two distinct, but overlapping, conceptual systems among the two cultural groups studied. The two systems are integrally related to the dialects spoken by Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians, that is, Aboriginal English and Australian English. The discrepancies between the two systems largely appear to be rooted in the cultural systems which give rise to the two dialects while the overlap between the two conceptual systems appears to arise from several phenomena such as experience in similar physical environments and access to 'modem' life style. A number of responses from non-Aboriginal informants suggest a case of what may be termed conceptual seepage, or a permeation of conceptualisation from one group to another due to contact. It is argued, in the light of the data from this study, that the notions of dialect and 'code-switching' need to be revisited in that their characterisation has traditionally ignored the level of conceptualisation. It is also suggested that the results of this study have implications for the professional preparation of educators dealing with Aboriginal students.

Abstract:
This exegesis frames my creative research. It details the cultural theories, histories, artists, arts practices and creative processes that have influenced the project. The exegesis provides an insight into the creative journey, conceptual thinking and arts products that have assisted me in answering the research question - Can artworks become a form of cultural agency whereby Aboriginal Place is realised not reconceptualised? Drawing from place-based methodologies, post-colonial theories, subaltern studies and Aboriginal ways of working, this research aspired to engage the viewer within a dialectic that realised the tensions and challenges Aboriginal artists have in presenting a sense of Place within artworks. It considered how Aboriginal art can both educe and challenge viewers’ cultural constructions of Aboriginal peoples, which impact on the reception, promotion and categorisation of Aboriginal art. The project asked, if whiteness is the imposed spatial aesthetic, how can Aboriginal Place, a culturally and communally held understanding of the world ever be realised? The creative research considered to what extent an Aboriginal artwork is both ‘a white thing’ and ‘a black thing’. The research interrogated knowledge intersections, Western and Indigenous, located within the cultural aesthetic interface. Through creative praxis artificial binaries existing within the Australian arts industry - traditional and contemporary, remote and urban, authentic and inauthentic, individual and collective - were challenged.

This thesis seeks to explore the intention of postcolonial Australian Aboriginal and Indigenous South African postcolonial writers in reconstructing cultural and historical myths. The predominant concerns of this thesis are the issues of Representation and Historiography as they are constructed in the four primary texts namely Dr Wooreddy's Prescription for Enduring the Ending of the World, The Heart of Redness, The Kadaitcha Sung and Woza Albert! It begins with a summary journey into the concepts of the postcolonial, presenting some of the challenges with which the concept has been confronted finding nonetheless it enabling as an 'anticipatory discourse' in appreciating the literatures from once-colonised nations such as Australia and South Africa. I then take a cursory look at the concept of myth while focussing on how writers like Sam Watson and Barney, Mtwa and Mbogeni put such cultural myths as the Biamee deity in The Kadaitcha Sung and the second coming of Jesus in Woza Albert! to use. In the next section, I focus on how the writers Mudrooroo (then Colin Johnson) in Australia and Mda from South Africa confront and reconstruct some of the historical myths upon which European colonialism was founded, using the texts, Dr Wooreddy's Prescription for Enduring the Ending of the World and The Heart of Redness. The achievement of this thesis has simply been one of the canonical expansions recommended of postcolonial criticism; the stressing an appreciation of the differences that exist even when postcolonial writers seek to achieve the same goal with their literatures.

Abstract:
While prejudice against Aboriginal-Australian people in Perth is well documented (e.g., Pedersen & Walker, 1997), no research exists as to whether Aboriginal children feel this prejudice, and if so whether it relates to their sense of self. The present project examines these issues. Its major emphasis is the self-attitudes of urban Aboriginal-Australian children (primarily local Nyoongah) and - to a lesser degree - Anglo­Australian children, both at a group and personal level. More specifically, the project examines the children's ingroup preference (i.e., how they feel about their cultural group) and their self-concept (i.e., how they feel about themselves personally), and the relationship between the two constructs. Also of interest is the effect of culture of interviewer on such self-attitudes, the relationship between the children's self-attitudes and reflected appraisals (how the children feel others like them), and the relationship between the children's self­attitudes and their teachers' ratings of their academic performance. Chapter One gives a brief introduction to the topic, and Chapters Two and Three examine the research relating to ingroup preference and self-concept/ self-esteem. Chapter Four outlines the issues relating to the testing of Aboriginal children, and details three pilot studies. Within this chapter, Study One examines what facets of self are important to both Aboriginal and Anglo children. Studies Two and Three pilot-test the ingroup preference and self-concept scales. Chapters Five and Six present the main studies. The main focus of Chapter Five (Study Four) is to investigate the ingroup preference of Aboriginal children, and the relationship between ingroup preference and self-concept. The study (ii) particularly focuses on the effects of interviewer culture (Aboriginal versus Anglo) on the children's responses. 117 Aboriginal children aged 5-12 years were interviewed about their ingroup preference. Children aged eight and over were also interviewed about their selfconcept and reflected appraisals. Children under eight years of age were not interviewed due to controversy in the literature about testing very young children in this respect. The children showed greater ingroup preference when interviewed by an Aboriginal interviewer; no such effect was found with self-concept scores. While age had no significant effect on ingroup preference, a negative correlation existed between age and self-concept. Self-concept scores were significantly more positive than, and were unrelated to, ingroup preference scores. In general, the Aboriginal children demonstrated awareness of specific cultural stereotypes at an early age. With respect to the reflected appraisals questions, results differed depending upon the interviewer. Using data from the Aboriginal interviewer, results indicated that almost half the children felt that the wider community didn't like them, with boys in the older age bracket feeling this more than girls of the same age. Reflected appraisals items were more strongly related to self-concept rather than ingroup preference measures; in addition, family influences on self-concept scores were on the whole stronger than societal ones. It was concluded that family support buffers Aboriginal children to a degree from the attitudes of the wider community. In Chapter Six, the final study is described and discussed. This involved testing the ingroup preference of 60 Aboriginal and 60 Anglo (iii) children aged 6-12 years. As in Study Four, children aged eight and above were also interviewed about their self-concept and reflected appraisals. These variables were then linked with teachers' ratings of academic performance. Results indicated that Anglo children showed greater ingroup preference and scored higher on teacher appraisals than Aboriginal children, although there was no difference on self-concept. Complex relationships were also found between reflected appraisals and the other variables that differed depending upon the culture of child. Seven major findings emerged from this project. First, both Aboriginal and Anglo children demonstrated awareness of specific social stereotypes of Aboriginal and Anglo people at a very early age. This led to Aboriginal children scoring lower on ingroup preference than Anglo children. However, responses of the children were extremely heterogeneous. Second, both Aboriginal and Anglo children scored high on self-concept scores, which supports the majority of previous research that minority groups do not necessarily score lower in this regard. Third, Aboriginal children scored higher on ingroup preference with a same-culture interviewer than with an Anglo- Australian interviewer. Fourth, how the children felt about themselves personally was unrelated to their ingroup preference in all studies. Fifth, regarding reflected appraisals, family influences on ingroup preference and self-concept scores were on the whole stronger than societal ones. Sixth, in Study Four, almost half the Aboriginal children (especially the older boys) felt that the wider community didn't like (iv) them. Finally, Aboriginal children scored lower than Anglo children on academic performance. The overall conclusion reached in this project is that the problems faced by Aboriginal children are only likely to be alleviated by a great deal of structural change, as cultural oppressions are perpetuated by societal rules. A good place to start is within the school system itself, which in some respects reflects the societal system at large.

These became the trade routes that criss-crossed Australia and transported religion and cultural values. The thesis also highlights the valuable contribution Aboriginal people made in assisting the European explorers, surveyors, and stockmen to open the country for colonisation, and it explores the interface between Aboriginal possession of the Australian continent and European colonisation and appropriation. Instead of positing a radical disjunction between cultural competencies 'before' and 'after', the thesis considers how European colonisation of Australia (as with other colonial settings) appropriated Aboriginal competence in terms of the landscape: by tapping into culinary and medicinal knowledge, water and resource knowledge, hunting, food collecting and path-finding. As a consequence of this assistance, Aboriginal Dreaming tracks and trading paths also became the routes and roads of colonisers. This dissertation seeks to reinstate Aboriginal people into the historical landscape of Australia. From its beginnings as a footnote in Australian history, Aboriginal society, culture, and history has moved into the preamble, but it is now time to inscribe Aboriginal people firmly in the body of Australian history.

This thesis examines the relationship between art and place, and challenges conventional readings of the paintings of the late Aboriginal Anmatyerr elder Emily Kame Kngwarray of Australia and Canadian/American modernist artist Agnes Martin. In the case of Kngwarray, connections between body, ground and canvas are extensively explored through stories told to the author by Emily???s countrywomen at Utopia in the Northern Territory. In the case of Agnes Martin, these relationships are explored through personal interview with the artist in Taos, New Mexico, and by phenomenological readings of her paintings. The methodology is based on analysis of narrative, interview material, existing critical literature and the artists??? paintings. The haptic and embodiment emerge as strong themes, but the artists??? use of repetition provides fertile ground to question wholly aesthetic or cultural readings of their paintings. The thesis demonstrates the significance of historical and psychological denial and erasure, as well as transgenerational legacies in the artists??? work. A close examination is made of the artists??? use of surface shimmer in their paintings and the effects of it on the beholder. The implications of being mesmerized by shimmer, especially in the case of Aboriginal paintings, bring up ethical questions about cultural difference and the shadow side of art in its capacity for complicity, denial, appropriation and commodification. This thesis challenges the ocularcentric tradition of seeing the land and art, and examines what occurs when a painting is viewed on the walls of a gallery. It addresses Eurocentric readings of Aboriginal art and looks at the power of the aesthetic gaze that eliminates cultural difference. Differences between space and place are explored through an investigation of the phenomenology of perception, the haptic, embodiment and ???presentness???. Place affiliation and the effects of displacement are examined to discover what is often taken for granted: the ground beneath our feet. Art can express belonging and relationship with far-reaching cultural, political, psychological and environmental implications, but only if denial and loss of place are acknowledged.

Abstract:
This study examines the processes associated with indigenous recovery from alcohol and drug misuse within the context of an Aboriginal rehabilitation centre on the mid-north coast of New South Wales (NSW), Australia. Benelong's Haven is an Aboriginal owned and controlled non-government organisation that was established in 1974 by Dr. Val Carroll (Bryant), O.A.M. Many of the residents, who originate from NSW and other states in Australia, are referred to the centre through the justice system as an alternative to a gaol sentence. The treatment programme is based on Alcoholics Anonymous and psychotherapeutic meetings involving residents reconstructing shared stories about their past experiences with alcohol and drugs. Importantly, substance use is depicted as undertaken in groups, therefore recovery must come from within the group. This is combined with an emphasis on Aboriginal spirituality, where culture becomes a form of symbolic healing that is employed by residents to assert their independence from white Australian society and develop a renewed sober status. Group solidarity and compliance with the rules is emphasised over resistance to staff, despite oscillating periods of discipline and nurturance. One of the essential problems of the treatment process is whilst many residents perceive they have experienced transformation in the programme, upon returning to their home communities some find it difficult to maintain their new status, where substance use continues amongst friends and relatives and where their position as Aboriginal Australians is stigmatised in the larger Australian society. However, those that return to substance use are not viewed as having failed by staff, nor that treatment has been unsuccessful. Rather, they are encouraged to return to the treatment programme and engage in a life long process of recovery. In examining the efficacy of alcohol and drug treatment programmes, studies must account for indigenous understandings of recovery, which are embedded in the larger racial, political and socio-economic history of Aboriginal and white Australian relations.

Abstract:
Though representing less than 4% of the Western Australian population, almost 40% of incarcerated adults and more than 70% of juveniles in detention in Western Australia are Aboriginal. Despite these figures prisoner education is rarely investigated in Australian academic research especially from an Aboriginal perspective. In response, this research focuses on what Aboriginal people themselves have to say about their experiences of education in Western Australian prisons. The intent is to identify what they believe helps and hinders education for Aboriginal prisoners. Consistent with critical theory this research questions society, structures and systems in context. Specifically it is grounded in critical race and whiteness theory which argues that racialised categories are socially constructed by dominant Settler systems with whiteness unmarked as a racial grouping. Attempting to counter this often unrecognised privilege, Aboriginal and other Indigenous academic voices are prioritised in this thesis. From the standpoint of a critical ally, the culturally appropriate methodology of yarning is adopted to learn from the experiences of Aboriginal ex-prisoners who volunteered to participate in this research. What is revealed relates to and goes beyond prisons and education, reflecting the interrelatedness of Indigenous life, worldviews and problem solving. Therefore experiences in prisons cannot be divorced from the broader structural and cultural influences shaping participant’s experiences of life. Based on experiences of the participants two major areas of hindrance to prisoner education can be identified. First is the impact of intergenerational trauma. Second are a range of challenges inside and outside prisons. Inside prisons there exists a lack of physical and human resources. Outside prisons Aboriginal inequality such as housing, employment, education and health are raised. Such hindrances are exemplars of white noise created by historical legacies, unquestioned white privilege and denial of Aboriginal sovereignty. What participants identify as helpful is programs, practices and relationships that value Aboriginal agency and reciprocity where non-Indigenous people and systems become informed of Aboriginal processes and perspectives of history. Having recognized that white noise requires systemic transformation, the thesis attempts to move beyond deficit and victim-blaming approaches to Indigenous prisoner education with a view to closing ‘educational gaps’. Building strong relationships is the major goal in constructing this transformative educational framework based on the four cornerstones of Honouring Aboriginal Sovereignty and Healing of Historical Trauma and actions of transformative education that recognise the need for starting with Aboriginal Agency and Becoming Informed as Whitefellas. Ultimately, it is not appropriate for Indigenous people alone to be expected to make shifts in thinking in order to match expectations of dominant Settler cultures. Changes are also required of non-Indigenous, mainstream systems, habits of mind and cultural self-awareness. Without such mutual transformation the din of white noise continues and reciprocal dignity and respect remains elusive whether inside or outside a prison.

Abstract:
The prediction of risk of violent and sexual reoffending is very important for the mental health and correctional practitioners making treatment decisions and providing opinions to the courts. Currently, Australian practitioners use risk assessments that were developed in other countries despite little evidence that they can be validly used locally, especially with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Both scholars and the courts have expressed concern about the use of data generated with these assessments to make important decisions about risk and risk management. The purpose of the current study was to develop a risk assessment for West Australian male Aboriginal violent and sexual offenders. During the first stage of the study, focus groups were used to identify risk factors that Aboriginal correctional workers believed could be unique to Aboriginal men in differing Western Australian geographical regions. The researcher then compiled a list of these predictors; those routinely used in existing risk measures; and others identified in the research literature to compile a list of possible predictors of reoffending. During three subsequent quantitative studies the researcher used retrospective file data of 1838 male Aboriginal participants obtained from the Western Australian Department of Corrective Services to examine the predictive accuracy of the identified predictors. The predictors that most accurately distinguished reoffenders from non-reoffenders were then used to develop a risk assessment. It was not possible to develop an assessment for violent offenders, but one was developed specifically for sexual offenders. This assessment was comprised of three risk items. They were unrealistic long-term goals, unfeasible release plans and poor coping skills (the 3-Predictor Model). The predictive accuracy of recidivism (sensitivity) of themodel was 92.3%, while the predictive accuracy of desisting (specificity) was 94.3%. The model also outperformed the Western Australian Community Corrections case needs model and adult actuarial risk instrument, the level of service need inventory, and the rapid risk assessment for sexual offence recidivism. Given the relative accuracy and the ability of the 3-Predictor model to outperform other risk assessments, further validation appears warranted.

Abstract:
As part of an investigation into traditional Australian Aboriginal bush medicine a range of Acacia species have been examined. Several species have been reported to be utilised for the preparation of antimicrobial washes and lotions by Aboriginal tribes. Initial bioactivity screening focussed on antimicrobial activity of the polar/and or non-polar extracts of air dried plant material, and a range of interesting activity has been found. Specifically, of the 94 extracts of Acacia species screened, five showed activity against the fungus C.albicans, 47 showed activity showed activity against the gram positive bacteria S.aureus and five showed activity against the gram negative bacteria E.coli. A retrosynthetic analysis and total synthesis of the novel anisidine alkaloid isolated from Acacia trineura was attempted. A variety of methodologies to generate the lithiate of anisidine and subsequently trap with an appropriate electrophile were attempted. While the results only indicated which methods were appropriate, they did give strong leads for future work in this direction

Abstract:
This study explores the pedagogical significance of life experiences of Indigenous students from an Australian community school and its relation to school participation. In particular the study focuses on the implications of students’ associations with ‘place’ on school curriculum. With the rate of participation of Indigenous students in education currently lower compared with non-Indigenous students, this study further informs our understanding of this phenomenon. The study is interpretive, based on the perspectives of students, staff and parents of an Indigenous community school successful in improving participation of Indigenous students to Year 10, and informed by the researcher’s own lived experiences teaching Indigenous students in three different countries. During this time, it was observed that Indigenous students’ association with place was a significant factor in their participation in education. Gruenewald’s multidimensional framework for place-conscious education is employed to guide the analysis and interpretation of data as it provides a means of addressing two important issues revealed in the review of literature on participation. First, participation is examined and interpreted in different ways, and second, a common thread in the differing interpretations is the concept of place. Analyses of the data reveal two overarching dimensions: Place and Aboriginality. Further analysis, informed by notions of place-conscious education reveal five identifiable elements for enhancing participation of Indigenous students in education: Curriculum Method, Curriculum Content, Careers, Partners and Identity. Educational programs that recognise how these elements are related to place and action them are likely to be more effective in enhancing participation of Indigenous students in education.
