Abstract:
Few developments in human history match the demographic consequences of European arrival in the Americas. Between 1500 and 1800, European powers extended their influence throughout much of the globe, but while the indigenous populations of Asia and Africa largely remain, the population of the Americas was transformed. The most popular explanations for this transformation emphasize epidemics caused by Eurasian pathogens. These familiar narratives, however, oversimplify the history. Uncertainty persists about, for example, the size of precontact populations, the timing of the mortality, its causes, and its consequences. It is important to appreciate the demographic history of American Indians in its full complexity, but not just for the historical record. Native American populations continue to suffer dire health inequalities. The stories that historians tell about demographic history influence how we thing about inequalities today, and this can have profound consequences for population health and health policy.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the social impact of language policy and planning (LPP) in the daily life of Wichi communities in Argentina. The analysis shows how languages and bilingualism, categorized as a specific resource to access public positions in deprived regions in Argentina, define a disputed territory and shape social conflicts among groups. The chapter focuses on the Argentinean region known as El Impenetrable, where new language policies are transforming health and educational institutions traditionally managed by non-indigenous people. The presence of new actors in public institutions, assessed with relation to language competences, and the setting of a new political agenda can be explained from local and global processes where public decisions are rooted. Ethnographic sociolinguistics and discourse analysis are combined in a methodological approach to LPP that takes into account the interplay of different voices in relation to local and social transformations regarding indigenous language uses and values.

Abstract:
This volume brings together original essays exploring the intersections of clinical practice, policy, and bioethics in women’s healthcare. Including but moving beyond the familiar theme of reproduction, it aims to both broaden areas of scholarship in feminist bioethics and to respond to ethical challenges that many women experience in accessing healthcare. Some of the contributions overlap with concerns that feminist scholars have voiced in the past, such as the medicalization of women’s bodies, but address new procedures (e.g., female cosmetic genital surgery). Other chapters expand into new fields that are underexplored in the bioethics literature, such as ethical issues concerning the care of Indigenous women, uninsured refugees and immigrants, women engaged in sex work, and those with HIV and perinatal mental health disorders. The richness of the collection lies in the multitude of disciplines represented. Contributors range from those who are in active clinical practice—medicine, nursing, and ethics—to philosophers contemplating new conceptual issues. Topical and contemporary, this book provides a valuable resource for physicians, nurses, clinical ethicists, and researchers working in the areas of women’s health and applied ethics.

Pati, Biswamoy. Tribals and Dalits in Orissa. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199489404.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book examines diverse aspects of the social history of the marginalized sections of society in Orissa, focusing on the problems of colonialism and the way it impacted the lives of tribals, outcastes and dalits. It delineates how these socially excluded sections were terrorized and further impoverished by both the colonial government and the chiefs of the despotic princely states who worked in tandem with them. In course of six tightly argued chapters, Biswamoy Pati studies several key issues including ‘colonial knowledge’ systems which had a long afterlife, such as the stereotyping of tribals as violent and brutal and colonial constructions of the ‘criminal tribe’. In addition, he closely examines colonial agrarian settlements, adivasi strategies of resistance (including uprisings); indigenous systems of health and medicine, the colonial ‘medical gaze’; conversion (to Hinduism), fluidities of caste formations in the nineteenth century, the Hinduization and appropriation by princely rulers of adivasi deities and healing methods, rituals of legitimacy adopted by these rulers as well as the development of colonial capitalism and urbanization. Alongside, he explores the connections between the marginal social groups and the national movement, besides touching upon the manner in which the ruling classes after Independence have allowed a host of inherited problems to remain unresolved. Adopting an inter-disciplinary method and drawing upon archival and rare, untapped sources, this fascinating study would be of interest to students of history, social anthropology, political sociology, cultural studies, dalit studies and social exclusion. It would also attract non-governmental organisations and planners of public policy.
