Abstract:
The relationship between social skill deficits and emotional and behavioural problems has led researchers to examine the cognitive and behavioural elements of social skill acquisition in childhood. This research aimed to compare the effectiveness of two components of the Aussie Optimism program for enhancing social behaviour in late childhood. One hundred and twenty-eight children (68 boys and 60 girls) aged between 9 and 12 years from two schools participated in the study: (a) 34 students received the social life skills program; (b) 49 students received the optimistic thinking skills program; and (c) 45 students were assigned to a no-treatment control group. Children were assessed with self-report and teacher-report measures of social skills, adjustment and explanatory style at pretest, posttest and three months follow-up. In addition, the relationship between these variables at pretest and health-related variables measured throughout the intervention was examined. The results indicated that the social skills program improved the social skills of participating children at posttest. No intervention effects were found for explanatory style. No intervention effects were found for teacher-rated measures of behaviour or adjustment, although in general students improved on these measures over time. Eating breakfast was associated with increased social skills, and better teacher-rated academic performance and adaptive functioning at pretest. Stressful life events were negatively correlated with academic performance and teacher-rated happiness at pretest, and higher exercise levels were associated with less teacher-rated social problems at pretest. This research indicates that the social life skills intervention program improves the social skills of participating children in the short-term. Limitations and implications of the present findings are discussed. Further research is needed to clarify the impact of health-related variables on intervention outcomes for children.

Introduction: Peripheral nerve injury can lead to a high functional loss to the patient. Due to this factor, many researches seek to propose techniques to improve the functionality of a reinnervated muscle. The End-to-Side Neurorrhaphy (ESN), without injury to the donor nerve, brought great contribution, since from this discovery, any nerve can be used as donor nerve without damages to themselves or to the structures innervated by it. However, after a neurorrhaphy, the time for axonal regeneration will determine atrophy of the muscle fibers. Electrical stimulation would prevent this negative factor. Purpose: This research aimed to study the efficiency of electrical stimulation in the regeneration of the cranial tibial muscle after section and end-to-side neurorrhaphy of the distal stump of the peroneal nerve to the lateral aspect of the tibial nerve. Methods: A total of 120 male Wistar rats (Rattus norvergicus) were used, electrostimulated with Russian and Aussie current, after End-to-Side Neurorrhaphy in two different periods, 45 and 90 days, divided into 11 groups: Initial Control Group (ICG); End-to-Side Neurorrhaphy Group (EESNG45 and EESNG90); End-to-Side Neurorrhaphy with Aussie Stimulation Group (ASG45 and ASG90); End-to-Side Neurorrhaphy with Russian Stimulation (RSG45 and RSG90); Unnerved Group (UG45 and UG90); Final Control Group (FCG45 and FCG90). Morphometric analyzes of the muscular and functional tissues of the rats of all 11 groups were performed, comparing the trophic regeneration response of muscle tissue. Results and Discussion: The results of the mean values of the cranial tibial muscle fiber area of the electrostimulated groups, ASG45 (2202.64μm2), RSG45 (2198.91μm2), ASG90 (2759.94μm2) and RSG90 (2777.28μm2) were always higher than the surgical control group EESNG45 (1778.27 μm2) and EESNG90 (1904.67 μm2), repeating the same result ratio with respect to the smaller diameter, ASG45 (44.14μm), RSG45 (43.71μm), ASG90 (51.06μm) and RSG90 (51.31μm), higher than the EESNG45 surgical control groups (30.43μm) and EESNG90 (142.38μm). In relation to the density of connective tissue the results were: ASG45 (7.92%), RSG45 (8.84%), ASG90 (9.665%) and RSG90 (7.00%). The results for the Maximum Contraction Strength Test the ASG45, RSG45, ASG90 and RSG90 electro-stimulated groups presented higher results than the group that only performed neurorrhaphy. The evaluation of the intensity of the footprint between the groups with different periods of electrostimulation times, 45 and 90 days, had a positive influence in the longer period, group 90, with a mean of 21.94 of pressure intensity of the footprint. Conclusion: The comparison between groups with different periods of electrostimulation, 45 and 90 days, showed that was no significant difference between groups of the same electrostimulation period, but between the groups with different periods, 45 and 90 days, a positive influence occurred in the longer period, thus confirming that is a direct relationship in the improvement of the morphological and functional characteristics of muscle tissue after ESN with the increase of the electrostimulation period.

Studies report that alternating current is more effective in promoting analgesia than low frequency pulsed currents. However, the hypoalgesic potential and the clinical use of the medium frequency alternating current in kHz (Aussie) are based on hypothetical mechanisms of action. The present study aimed to investigate the hypoalgesic potential of the Aussie Current (AC) in healthy individuals. Eighty-one healthy subjects underwent electrostimulation by using kilohertz-frequency alternating current for 20 minutes and were randomized into three distinct groups (1 kHz, 4 kHz or placebo). Pressure pain threshold (PPT, algometry), conditioned pain modulation (CPM, ischemic pain in the contralateral upper limb and algometry), temporal summation (TS, algometry) were measured before and after intervention, the level of anxiety (STAI-T and STAI-E), in turn, was measured only at the pre-intervention. At the end of the protocol, subjects were questioned regarding the treatment they received and the comfort during the stimulation (numerical scale) and, similarly, investigators were questioned about their expectation related to subject’s allocation groups. These responses were recorded and used to test the adequacy of the masking procedure regarding the subject and the investigator. The level of anxiety evaluated did not a statistically significant difference between the groups, who received the active AC (1 kHz / 4kHz) or placebo, (p> 0.05). Regarding PPT, there was no statistically significant difference in the active AC 1 kHz, active 4 kHz and placebo groups at any of the moments evaluated. The active group AC 4 kHz presented a statistically significant reduction in the amplification of pain intensity, verified by the reduction of perceived pain intensity, in the tenth (p = 0.02), twentieth (p = 0.01) and thirtieth second (p = 0.001) in the TS test. The active group AC 1 kHz, in turn, presented significant reduction of pain intensity only at the end of the measurement (thirty-second, p = 0.01). In the evaluation of the CPM, there was no significant difference of the PPT, during induction of ischemia, in the AC active groups 4 kHz and active AC 1 kHz, before and after intervention (p> 0.05). However, in the placebo group there was a significant reduction in PPT, only during induced ischemia, both before and after intervention (p = 0.01). Thus, our study provides evidence that kilohertz-frequency AC current, especially when used with an equivalent 4 kHz frequency, presents hypoalgesic effect, having having possible inhibitory action in the Central Nervous System (CNS).
No entanto, no grupo placebo, houve redução significativa do LDP, apenas durante a isquemia induzida, comparando pré e pós-intervenção (p=0,01).

Introduction: Electrical stimulation, a non-pharmacological resource, has been widely used for pain relief. The aussie current has presented analgesic potential effect, however, its form of action is still hypothetical. Objective: to evaluate the effect of aussie current on nociception and motor behavior in an animal model of inflammatory joint pain. Methods: 36 male Wistar rats were used and the inflammation was induced in the knee by intra-articular injection of a mixture of 3% carrageenan and 3% kaolin. The animals, randomly distributed, were separated into six groups: four groups were treated with aussie current with high or low intensity combined with high or low frequency, burst duration of 4 ms and burst frequency of 50 Hz for 20 minutes; negative control group was remained anesthetized during this same period and the positive one was treated with morphine (5 mg/kg), each group consisting of 6 animals. Primary, secondary and thermalv hiperalgesy, as well as the exploratory locomotor activity of the animals were evaluated. A single investigator performed all assessments, in addition to being masked, and the therapist did not interfere in the assessments. The results were expressed as mean ± SEM. Differences between the groups were related by the two-way ANOVA with the post hoc Tukey test. Values of p <0.05 were considered significant. Results: There was a significant reduction of the deep mechanical threshold 24 hours after induction of inflammation when compared to baseline in all groups (p <0.002). No significant differences were observed in the post-treatment evaluations with the aussie current at moments 0h, 2h, 4h, 6h immediately after the first application and after repeated applications for five consecutive days, only the morphine treated group presented reduction of hyperalgesia (p <0.02). Conclusion: the aussie current did not show antinoceptive effect in animal model of inflammatory pain.

Abstract:
Aboriginal people make a great contribution to Australian sport in conditions of considerable adversity, and yet their contribution goes largely unacknowledged. This study investigates the experiences of one Aboriginal family with an extensive history of involvement with Australian Rules Football using methodologies which seek, and value, Aboriginal perspectives on their involvement. It privileges Indigenous knowledge. The study focuses particularly on the involvement of the Hayward family in Australian Rules Football - the game they love - and in which they have been intensely involved for many generations. The study describes how the Haywards of southwest Western Australia, like most Aboriginal families, experienced an extensive period of colonisation in which their social and cultural autonomy and power were eroded. The historical experience of Aboriginal Australians is vastly different to that of mainstream Australians, and grossly inequitable, not only in terms of economic and educational opportunity, but also in terms of access to sporting opportunities. In many ways, the story of the Hayward family is representative of the experiences of many Black sportsmen and women over the past hundred years. It is suggested that, in order to understand Aboriginal participation and foster the development of Aboriginal sportspeople of all ages, an understanding of the context of their lives is crucial. This study then, explores my extended family's experiences as participants in mainstream sport. It describes how the Haywards, like their community contemporaries, have confronted the limited opportunities afforded to them in their ambitions to gain access, equity of participation, and appropriate reward for effort in their sporting endeavours.
Over many generations of Aboriginal participation in the game, there has been considerable inequality of opportunity to enter and participate. In their efforts to participate, members of the Hayward family faced many obstacles unacknowledged by non-Aboriginal players, administrators and spectators. The study shows that many of these obstacles had little to do with the sporting prowess of the Haywards. Every past and present player interviewed as part of this research told of circumstances where they felt that they had not been given a fair go - be it by an umpire, a team official, opposing players, players from their own team, or the crowd. For every case of acceptance of Aboriginal players by a football club, there are many stories of rejection by other clubs. Despite these obstacles, the study found that the Haywards (like many Aboriginal people) see sport (and particularly football) as significant in their lives. They love the game but, equally importantly, they believe that sporting prowess can open a path of entry to mainstream society, provide important economic advantages and offer opportunities for broader social participation while maintaining strong traditions of Aboriginal virtuosity and relationships. The study concludes by suggesting that, despite the adversities encountered by this family in their desire to participate in football, there has been much in the game that has brought pleasure, a sense of success, satisfaction and achievement to them. While this is the story of one family, I believe it provides important insights into experiences common to many Aboriginal families and sportspersons, and that this research deepens our understanding of Australian social history. Football has been, and continues to be, a valued part of the lives of many Aboriginal people.

Abstract:
The viennese soul, the central theme of this work, has been embodied in Friedrich Torberg and at the sane time has survived through him. Born in a jewish upper middle-class family during the last years of Francois-Foseph's reign, he belongs to the generation of writers who contributed to make the so special viennese spirit live and be glorified at the end of the 19th century. A young and celebrated writer in a young republic haunted by monarchy, he had to leave his hometown during the anschluss. His first destination was Prague, his second homeland, he then lived in switzerland and france and finally went into exile in the united states. There his inspiration dried up in this world so different from his. His circle of acquaintances included famous exile writers and his literary style reflected this mutation in his own world as well as the world historical events. In 1951 he finally went back to Vienna where he remained a political and cultural reference until his death. He incessantly worked at keeping the jewish viennese spirit of his youth alive in a modem world where it did not any longer have a place. He used to like to call himself : « the last jewish writer of the german language »

Abstract:

Abstract:
The thesis presents a development of J. L. Austin's analysis of truth and its accompanying analysis of sentence structure. This involves a discussion and refinement of Austin's notions of the demonstrative and descriptive conventions of language and of the demonstrative and descriptive devices of sentences. The main point of the thesis is that ordinary language must be treated as an historical phenomenon: one that has evolved its more complex features through a long series of variations upon a small number of rudimentary conventions and locutions. The utility of Austin's analysis is shown to lie in the description that it provides of the functions of these rudimentary conventions and locutions. The analysis is used to illuminate a number of problematic sentences and expressions of ordinary language, including identity sentences, definite descriptions, existential sentences, and conditionals.

Abstract:
This is a concurrent, mixed methods study of the impacts of Austin, Texas’s cultural plan, CreateAustin. In the study, trend analysis and a t-test were used to examine variables before and after the cultural plan was in place. At the same time, interviews with cultural planners were used to uncover other effects. My research addresses a gap in the literature between understanding the desired and actual outcomes of a cultural plan. Cultural plans are being developed by many communities in an effort to attract creative workers but they are rarely evaluated. Evaluation using a mixed methods approach is necessary to capture all the outcomes of a cultural plan, rather than the limited scope of impacts that are captured by qualitative or quantitative analyses alone. My analysis of the quantitative variables showed some significant differences between when the plan was in place and the years prior to its creation. Interviews with key stakeholders revealed the formation of new networks as a powerful outcome of the planning process. The results allowed me to gauge the overall impact of CreateAustin and make some observations about the cultural planning process in general, as well as uncover new directions for future research.

Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with J.L. Austin’s work on the topic of empirical knowledge. Austin encourages us to attend to our everyday epistemic and discursive practices, and specifically to the particular circumstances in which we might ordinarily say that a person knows something. I begin by considering what kind of illumination on the topic of empirical knowledge we might expect to get by following Austin’s approach, and defend Austin’s approach against one influential critique. The focus then shifts to one of Austin’s key observations regarding knowledge, namely that knowing is a matter of having done ‘enough’ for present intents and purposes to establish the truth. I argue that this and other Austinian considerations speak in favour of a contextualist account of knowledge. Finally, I present a novel Austin-inspired response to one particular sceptical puzzle occasioned by what have been referred to as ‘arguments from ignorance’.

MacNeil, Ronald Colin. "Warren Robinson Austin: A Reluctant Cold Warrior." ScholarWorks @ UVM, 2019. https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/graddis/1033.

Full text
Abstract:
Senator Warren Robison Austin (R-VT) was appointed by President Harry S. Truman to be the US Representative to the United Nations in June 1946. While a member of the US Senate, Austin had been a great advocate for internationalism and the United Nations. His tenure as Representative lasted until January 1953. The growing pains of the new organization were complicated by myriad contentious problems, not the least of which was the dawning of the Cold War. Austin was caught between the Soviet delegation, who were bent on opposing virtually all US initiatives at the UN, and members of the Truman Administration who were adamantly anti-communist/anti-Soviet. This thesis examines the role that anti-communism played in establishing an atmosphere of distrust leading, at least partly, to the Cold War; and Austin’s role at the United Nations as regards three representative issues that confronted the international organization during his tenure. The first issue was how the Soviets and the Western Powers disagreed over the question of unanimity of the permanent five members in the Security Council. Next, I will show how irreconcilable differences between the United States and the Soviets thwarted the functioning of the Atomic Energy Commission of the Security Council. Lastly, the Korean War is examined as the first use of a military response by the United Nations to international aggression. Austin dutifully represented the administration at the United Nations, but often expressed his own less confrontational views in meetings, speeches outside the UN, and in letters to friends and loved ones. He held the United Nations to be a positive force for peace, while other members of the administration were stridently anti-Soviet and found the United Nations to be the perfect ideological battleground while acting unilaterally outside the organization. I will show how Austin had an idealistic view of the United Nations and maintained that it was the best vehicle for the maintenance of peace. Also how he was, initially, more even-handed in dealing with the Soviet delegation than his overseers in the Truman administration. He eventually grew weary of Soviet tactics and their alleged aggression in Korea leading him to harden his outlook.

The automation of information retrieval systems in libraries try to reduce the cognitive load of work, to perform specific tasks, which previously was done manually with chips in a catalog. With the automation of libraries and the help of the Internet, catalogs are now available online. So, it was carried out a study about the online catalog Auslib, wich aim was analyze automation softwares for libraries. This study was based on a hybrid approach scoped to verify the subjective satisfaction of the Sistemoteca’s users from the Federal University of Campina Grande. The public search module was analized, because it was already deployed and working. Were realized tests of interaction with students and staff. The usability happened as field survey and in the laboratory, attended by 128 users, according to all three prospects for evaluating the hybrid approach: a compliance inspection of the product, performance measurement and survey of user satisfaction. In the compliance inspection was decided to use parts: 14 - dialogues with menu, 16 - dialogues by direct manipulation and 17 - forms of dialogues. The choice of those parts of ISO 9241 was due to the modes of interaction, human-computer interface feature that - if the evaluated product. Part 11, ISO 9241:1998 was used to select assessment strategies in order to measure the performance and survey of user satisfaction. The instruments used for collecting data in this study were: questionnaires for delineation of the profile and subjective satisfaction of users, interview, test script, record video and list of compliance inspection. As a collection method was used verbalizing procedures for users to comment his acts. After the quantitative and qualitative analysis of the data, testing with users allowed to verify how they interacted with the interface Auslib Catalog. A result for the two categories of users as obtained as an index of a minimal satisfaction with the product, in both test environments, it’s justified by the list of faults detected in the module's public search software. It’s believed that the research has significantly contributed through usability guidelines proposed as a way to improve the product interface.

Abstract:
This study examines the role of the Austin Friars in pre-Reformation English society, as distinct both from the Austin Friars of Europe and from other English mendicant orders. By examining how the Austins formulated their origins story in a distinctly English context, this thesis argues that the hagiographical writings of the Austin Friars regarding Augustine of Hippo, whom they claimed as their putative founder, had profound consequences for their religious platform. As their definition of Augustine's religious life was less restrictive than that of the European Austin Friars and did not look to a recent, charismatic leader, such as Dominic or Francis, the English Austin Friars developed a religious adaptability visible in their pastoral, theological, and secular activity. This flexibility contributed to their durability by allowing them to adapt to religious needs as they arose rather than being constrained to what had been validated by their heritage. The behaviour of these friars can be characterised foremost by their ceaseless advancement of the interests of their own order through their creation of a network of influence and the manoeuvring of their confrères into socially and economically expedient positions. Given the propensity of the Austin Friars towards reform, this study seeks to understand its place within and interaction with English society, both religious and secular, in an effort to reconstruct the religious culture of this order. It therefore investigates their interaction with the laity and patronage, with heresy and reform, and with secular powers. It emphasises, above all, the distinctiveness of the English Austin Friars both from other mendicant orders and from the European Austin Friars, whose rigid interpretations of the religious example of Augustine led them to a strict demarcation of the Augustinian life as eremitical in nature and to hostile relations with the Augustinian Canons. Ultimately, this thesis interrogates the significance of being an Austin Friar in fifteenth- or sixteenth-century England and their role in the religious landscape, exploring the exceptional variability to their behaviour and their ability to take on accepted forms of behaviour.

Abstract:
This research has begun as an ethnographic study in various cultural spaces that seek to identify, between Moscow and St. Petersburg, some singular figures of creators. To the unsuccessful attempt to transfer in Moscow an institution of collection and exhibition of "art brut" in accord to Dubuffet ideas, an opposite trend of social movement that intended to achieve results “by the means of art”. The study is reconstructing the careers of actors involved in various forms of compensation, and the biographical trajectories of the last Soviet generation by the image of the “non-conformist” artist. This ethnography, had leed to revitalizing the memory of the great expectations that were placed on the art in the early years of the Soviet revolution to bring up a new man. Western European approaches towards identification of the origins of art were supported in Russia in the 1920s by a new Academy of the Artistic Sciences where the creative activity was studied. This rise in the time of "radiant utopias" has been necessary to understand the cultural transfers and to a better understanding of the issues related to identities of the strange creators that preside today between Paris and Moscow

Abstract:
Hypocoristics are informal variations of words which are common in Australian English, such as footy for football. The aim of this study was to examine whether people used different hypocoristics to convey different meanings for novel words (as common nouns, place names, male names, and female names), when presented as either ‘loveable’ or ‘unloveable’. Our sample consisted of 132 adults living in Australia (66% female, mean age 25 years), who completed this study online. In line with the as-yet untested predictions of McAndrew (1992), it was hypothesised that participants would apply significantly more -ie endings to loveable than unloveable words, and significantly more -o endings to unloveable than loveable words. Both hypotheses were supported. Our results further supported the prediction that participants would add significantly more -o endings to male than female names, but not the prediction that they would add significantly more -ie endings to female than male names: in fact, the use of -ie did not differ. Changes made to individual word types, and to word length, are also discussed in a more exploratory manner. Overall, the results suggest that Australian adults create hypocoristics not randomly, but in a systematic way, to convey different meanings.

Have you driven someplace, walked or climbed or jumped in from two miles up? Have you travelled thousands of kilometres world-wide by motor vehicle, round mazes of freeways and off the beaten track? Set against this activity are interruptions, intended or unintended; a necessary fuel stop, an unforeseen accident, R&R, times to debrief, reflect and record. On the road, this duality is a constant. It seemed that a focal point for exploring these opposing forces could be the SERVICE STATION - a place of brief stops and encounters, but also of continual movement -of machinery, vehicles, work; of coming, stopping and going. It was on this premise that this ballad opera was based.

Abstract:
A ‘quintessentially Australian’ feature of English (Rendle-Short, 2009: 245), vocative 'mate' has commonly been said to carry a special connection with Australian identity and culture (e.g. Wierzbicka, 1997). However, precisely how this can be measured within a population is yet to be established. This paper analyses the reported use of the address term 'mate' by Australians of a Non-English Speaking Background (NESB) and its relation to self-perceived ethnic identity. Data was collected from 101 participants of varying ethnic backgrounds using a written questionnaire observing self-reported use of 'mate' and attitudes towards its use. Results demonstrate that, overall, usage patterns for NESB Australians are similar to those found for Australians of an English speaking background (Rendle-Short, 2009), with significant variation in use across gender groups. Though they reported using the term less overall, females using 'mate' claimed to do so with a greater range of addressees than male respondents, reporting a use pertaining less to the ‘traditional’ masculine and Anglo-Celtic associations of 'mate' (Rendle-Short, 2009; Wierzbicka, 1997; Wilkes, 1985) and suggesting a more innovative use of the vocative. This would follow the widely accepted notion that young females are the most innovative within a community in situations of ongoing language change (Labov, 1990; Trudgill, 1972). The influence of identity in language use is widely accepted in sociolinguistic work and it has been proposed that ‘individuals whose ethnic identity is important to them will show more ethnic marking in their language than those who have chosen to assimilate within the dominant group’ (Clyne, Eisikovits & Tollfree, 2001: 226). This claim has however been made without a means for measuring ethnic identity. Such has been developed by Hoffman and Walker (2010) with an ‘Ethnic Orientation (EO) Survey’. As applied in the present study, the survey featured questions relating to ethnicity and community language use. Based on answers to 33 questions, respondents were assigned an overall EO score along a continuum and sorted into ‘low’, ‘mid’ and ‘high’ EO groups, with those scoring highly said to identify strongly with their ethnic heritage, those scoring lower identifying with it less, and so, presumably relating more to an Australian identity. EO was found to correlate with reported use of vocative 'mate', and actually offered a better account than groupings based on time spent in Australia. Respondents in the high EO group claimed to use the vocative less often than those in the low EO group, where the term was also used across a broader range of addressees, including females and other members of the same ethnic group. This would suggest a more widespread and innovative use for some participants, stepping away from the term’s traditional sense of masculine and Anglo-Celtic exclusivity. Results indicate that for the NESB Australians studied here perceived use of vocative 'mate' is associated with affiliation to Australian society, many seeing it as a tool of assimilation. As one participant wrote: ‘['mate'] gives a sense of an Australian identity despite my skin colour’ (female, 24, second generation, low EO)

Abstract:

The Aussie Heart Guide is a home based cardiac rehabilitation program. It is delivered over the telephone, to patients with coronary artery disease by an Aussie Heart Guide nurse mentor who works in partnership with the patient for lifestyle change and the management of their condition. Home based cardiac rehabilitation using programs like the Aussie Heart Guide is effective in reducing the morbidity and mortality from coronary artery disease. However little is known about the acceptability of this type of program to the Australian patient, their principle lay care giver, nurse mentors who work alongside patients in its delivery or about what impact it has on nursing roles and functions. The purpose of this study was to explore all these factors in the context of using the Aussie Heart Guide with patients experiencing coronary artery disease and their lay carers (all spouses in this instance). The methodology used in the study was qualitative description. Four patients with requiring cardiac rehabilitation, three spouses and five nurse mentors participated in the study. Their experiences of using the Aussie Heart Guide were captured via semi structure interviews (nurses) and questionnaire (patients and spouses). Findings from the study include that patients perceived the Aussie Heart Guide was useful for their recovery and liked the ability it provided to them to monitor their own progress. They also valued their relationship with their nurse mentor. Patient engagement with the program was influenced by their previous illness experience, transition from hospital to home and previous experience of cardiac rehabilitation. The implications of the patient findings were that an individualised program with flexibility of modality would enhance the patient experience. Therefore nurses need additional skills and knowledge in how to deliver telephone based services to patients which enhance the patient nurse relationship. Spouses though few in number also found the Aussie Heart Guide useful to them in supporting the patient. Nurses found the Aussie Heart Guide useful in supporting patients experiencing lifestyle change and support with disease management. However, they were uncertain about their relationships with patients when contact was predominately telephone only. The uncertainty resulted in concerns regarding their rapport and honesty in communications with patients. Nurses and patients struggled with issues such as power and control within their relationship and some nurses found working in partnership with patients challenging. Therefore nurses need additional skills and knowledge in how to deliver telephone based services to patients which enhance the patient nurse relationship. Nevertheless, the Aussie Heart Guide appears to be an acceptable model of home based cardiac rehabilitation patients with coronary artery disease, their spouses and nurses.

Whitman, Kirsty Louise. "Looking out for the ‘Aussie bloke’: gender, class and contextualizing a hegemony of working-class masculinities in Australia." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2440/98679.

Abstract:
This thesis explores working-class masculinities in Australia, looking at such masculinities in relation to areas such as media representations, education, work, intimacy, and leisure and risk. In particular this thesis sets out to contextualize what is argued to be a hegemonic masculinity in a specific location, considering how the hegemony of certain representations of working-class masculinity is embedded in Australian culture in ways that legitimize certain gendered, classed, sexualized and ethnic positions while delegitimizing others. Working-class masculinity is considered as an inclusionary and exclusionary tool. This thesis uses masculinity theory, class theory, and some empirical research to look at working-class masculinity in Australia as centralizing and, consequently, hegemonic. In doing so this study explores this highly important and oft debated term in such a way as to suggest that the term hegemonic masculinity may in fact need to be contextualized in order to be clarified.
