Abstract:
In the last twenty years, the study of translation has emerged as a discipline in its own right.1 Scholars in various fields have turned their attention to the linguistic, philosophical, and ideological issues involved in the ‘carrying over’ of ideas from one language into another. This new discipline has a natural affinity with Latin philology, since the Romans may be regarded as pioneers in the art of translation in the West. At present, however, we have only begun to study what they really thought about translation and how they went about doing it. In the present paper,31 will re-examine a valuable but under-appreciated witness: Aulus Gellius, author of the Attic NightsSome of Gellius′ brief essays contain translations from Greek, and a few of them were prepared specifically as exercises in the ars interpretandi.By studying them, we learn how the questions associated with translation were addressed by a Roman litterateur of the Antonine period.

Abstract:
Gabiniust a crimen maiestatis vádja alól felmentették, a crimen repetundarum elkövetésében azonban bűnösnek találták. A crimen ambitus kivizsgálására nem került sor a vádlott száműzetésbe vonulása miatt.

Abstract:
Since its discovery, the tomb of Aulus Hirtius in Rome has been regarded as a firmly dated monument and, thus, constituted a widely used fixed point for those tracing the early development of Roman brick architecture. However, several peculiarities regarding the construction of the tomb and its inscriptions strongly indicate that the present dating, which is based on historical sources, may not be correct. In this note it is suggested by the author that the original tomb was destroyed and thoroughly remodelled in the early or mid-Augustan period. Some general implications of this regarding the introduction of brick architecture in Rome are also considered.

Abstract:
Abstract Roman Criminal Justice. Legal-philosophical Traces in Aulus Gellius' "Noctes Atticae". The study reviews discussions of just punishment in Aulus Gellius' „Noctes Atticae". It embeds them in contemporary legal discussions based mainly on Cicero's and Seneca's works. The resulting picture of the Roman philosophy of criminal law stands in striking contrast to the historical prejudice of the sheer technicality and philosophical infertility of Roman legal culture. The analysed and partially highly sophisticated arguments belong nevertheless especially to the applied part of legal philosophy.

Abstract:
Noctes Atticae of Aulus Gellius is a collection of memoranda of a most miscellaneous description, dealing with literatury and grammatical criticism, philosophy, law, history and antiquarian topies. In 3. 16 there are references to the variation in the periods of gestation reported by physician and philosophers; moreover incidentally, to the views also of the ancient poets on that subject many other noteworthy and interesting particulars. To legal students the interest of this book of Aulus Gellius lies chiefly in the references contained therein to the ius trium liberorum and the provision of the XII Tables that a child is born in ten months and not in the eleventh month.

Abstract:
The survey moves from the analysis of a well-known passage of Aulus Gellius concerning the punishment for theft in ancient legal cultures (N.A. 11.18). The close inspection of the precisely ordered structure of Gellian text reveals some hitherto undetected aspects of Gellius’ working method, providing insight into the manner in which he managed his legal sources (particularly Sabinus’ works). This issue, of literary and cultural interest (the exegesis discloses a sort of ‘commentary’ on Sabinus’ works), is at the core of the present study and extends throughout its first part. The relationship between Gellius and the works of the Roman jurists, however, does not exhaust the interest of N.A. 11.18. The structural analysis of Gellius’ Chapter 18 will enable us, in fact, to read in a new light the discussion on Roman theft provided by Gaius’ Institutes (Gai 3.183 ff.). We devote the second part of this study to a short analysis of Gaian text as well, which can be extensively compared with N.A. 11.18. The contrast between the structures of the two texts will help us track down some common elements, providing us with evidence of a shared underlying pattern. This result makes a textual contribution to the never-ending debate on the ‘model’ of Gaius’ Institutes, on the one hand, and to the palingenesis of Sabinus’ Libri iuris civilis, on the other.

Abstract:
THE OFFICE OF CENSOR IN THE LIGHT OF THE NOCTES ATTICAE BY AULUS GELLIUSSummaryThe aim of the article is to analyse the passages in Aulus Gellius’ Noctes Atticae on the office of censor. This magistracy seems to have interested Gellius for various reasons: linguistic matters concerning the meaning of archaic words, but also things inspired by the books Gellius had read and where he found some amusing anecdotes which he decided to record. He treated the censors’ office as one of the most important Roman magistracies, and described the censors’ power to conduct auspices, issue edicts, deliver speeches, control morals, conduct the census, make the list of senators and equites, and mete out punishment with the issue of the censorial note. However, he never mentioned the censors’ administrative powers such as the conclusion of public contracts and the supervision of public places. The Attic Nights are not arranged in a systematic order, but they are a priceless source of information on legal institutions such as the office of censor; Gellius has saved for us some direct quotations from otherwise lost works by Roman orators and jurists.
