Full textThis thesis focuses on the figure of marginality that has appeared in Chinese independent cinema. In particular, it examines independent cinema in a post-socialist Chinese context. This study allowed the exploration of the social condition of marginalized people, as well as their representation in independent cinema. In order to identify the characteristics of the representation of the marginalized in Chinese cinema, thematic and aesthetic approaches were used. Urban space, the suburbs and the countryside have been favored by some independent filmmakers. Three movements were accordingly examined: the cinema of the Urban Generation, the cinema of the New Xungen movement and the New Documentary movement. The three films associated with them are East Palace, West Palace (Zhang Yuan, 1996), Still Life (Jia Zhangke, 2006) and The Three Sisters of Yunnan (Wang Bing, 2012). These films are representative of the presence of marginalized people in Chinese society.

Full textMy Ph-D thesis concerns the study of the catalytic oligomerization reaction with nickel, iron and cobalt complexes coordinated by N-O, P-N, N-P-N, P-O and P-N-P type ligands with a N donor atom represented by an oxazoline or a pyridine heterocycle. These complexes activated by a cocatalyst such as MAO or AlEtCl2 showed high activities and a high selectivity of C4 olefins in ethylene oligomerization. The nickel complexes with P-N chelates showed a high impact of the P substituents on the oligomerization selectivities. Moreover, the crystallographic studies on nickel complexes coordinated by N-O and P-N type ligands showed the formation of mono-, di- and tetranuclear complexes. The cobalt, iron and palladium complexes with N-P-N ligands highlighted original N-N, P-N or N-P-N coordination modes of the ligands influenced by the ligand substituents and the metal center

Full textThe aim of this research on us film director john cassavetes is to explore the question of "vanishing frontiers" in his films. The uncertain territories of his "vanishing frontiers" lie in a place between cinema, drama and reality. They also lie in individuals whose identities question the very norms of 'normality', 'deviance' and 'marginality'. The real world and that of the theatre leave their imprints on the spatial and temporal frameworks of cassavetes's films and on fiction which, as the actors play their roles, induces a subtle and perverse game of blurred identities, which in their turn induce a change in the perception of the nature of fiction. Cassavetes's way of viewing and using actors brings to light numerous influences and challenges the very idea of a permanent sense of self. This leads his characters to "experience limits", their own limits as well as those of the world. Thus, family influences as well as professional or social ones seem to draw frontiers which delineate marginality and lead these characters to look for liberation. In cassavetes's films, identities are forever fluctuating. The question of truth can only be considered in terms of dislocation and contradiction. The director's cinematographic perspective is rooted in a kaleidoscopic way of viewing time and space. This vision defines the conditions of freedom in an art that is a challenge to the actors, the spectators as well as to the director himself

The first representations of Ireland offered by american and british cinemas (such as the Stage Irishman) illustrate those that have followed (including stereotypes). The study defines key concepts such as national cinema, representation and stereotyping. It also presents the complex and long history of the Irish with their British neighbours and American cousins. The corpus of american, british and irish films shows the numerous amount of themes that this subject tackles, such as catholicism, massive immigration, mafia, community ties and hyphened culture in the USA, the irish war of independance and the civil war at the start of the XXth century, the Northern Ireland Troubles, etc. . . The definition of Irishness is also tackled through the perspectives and various motives of filmmakers such as John Ford, Martin Scorsese, David Lean, Ken Loach, Stephen Frears, Neil Jordan, Jim Sheridan, etc. . . The rising of the Celtic Tiger as a strong economy for a new Ireland in the 1990s has challenged filmic representations and sterotypes that were uncontested until then, consequently changing the outlook on the image of the Irish on screen. Irish cinema has finally come to existance thanks to a national but also european investment. Investigation in time and the space when all the matters mix, where each vision takes a different form, where each image has its specific qualities. The places then become sublimated spaces, favourable with all imaginations, but those which we always knew. The report which accompanies this film gives him a reflexive lighting, including in the literal sense of the trem. In its double reflexion it reference with work its own effects, as out of mirror, while associating the problems to him "Non nova, Sed nove" : not new things but of the innovation, whose lighting makes in the light of others practise gives another dimension to the images. The problematic description of the plastic object is done in a permanent play beetween images and text, which make direction the ones compared to the others. It is the iconography which gives to the report its fundamental structure to reach an entire universe then. It is in a double permanent movement between surface and depth that my images settle. Full textThis geocritical study analyzes "La Nieta de Fedra" (1929) by Halma Angelico, "La guerre de Troie n'aura pas lieu" (1935) by Jean Giraudoux, "Antigone" (1939) by Salvador Espriu and "Jason" (1945) by Elisabeth Porquerol, all of which are theater plays with mythological themes and which highlight the treatment of feminity in relationship to a multiple spatiality. The geocritical process enables this geocentric study, revealing the historical context of the plays, an analysis of the feminity, the work of these authors, and the different transpositions of these texts on stage. Intertextuality is emphasized through the different stage adaptations, presenting in addition the more speculative nature in the works which are impossible to represent. The different spaces (narrative, dialogued, stage directions, playful space, scenography, extra-literary, etc. ) make it possible to give a fair representation of the ideas that the authors wanted to convey at the time they wrote their plays. Similarly, through the scenic space, the various directors visually translate these ideas. We will sea that the exposed feminity is the result of the historical context and a spatial vision that focuses on sedentary and nomadic spaces (Deleuze and Guattari)

Full textThe Risorgimento, the drastic social changes of the late XIX th and the early XX th Century, the mutations of the fascism and the reality of the antifascist have been the subject of a great amount of Italian movies between 1954 and 2006. This period constitutes an ideal investigation field to analyse the film makers discourses on the contemporary history of the peninsula. New problematics appeared a few years before the « Golden Age » of the Transalpine cinema. The evolution of those interrogations during the following decades confirmed the interest of the film directors (shared to a certain point with the critic and the public) for the quite tumultuous past of Italy. The aspects of the revolutionary commitment, the dysfunctions of the national model, the relationship between the ruling classes and the working masses, the disintegration of the army during World War I, the attitude of the population towards the fascist regime, and finally, the Southern question – diagonal crossing the whole studied corpus– represent the main themes tackled in the historical Italian movies. Thanks to various cinematographic approaches, authors have therefore determined several types of battles of wills between the power (as diverse as it may be) and the individuals. From that point of view, the importance of the fictions of Luchino Visconti, Florestano Vancini or Francesco Rosi, to only quote them, proves once again that the historiography cannot only be limited to analyse the historian work

Full textThe subject of this work is focused in the utilization of a bottom-up approach to develop an Au nanostructured electrodeposits on the glassy carbon surface by a voltammetric procedure. These Au nanostructures have been characterized either by microscopic and voltammetric techniques. The critical dimensions of nanostructures has been evaluated by a Gausean normal data distribution curve and presented, as results a mean height of 35 nm and a mean diameter of 150 nm. The Au nanostructures were further modified by the deposition of a cystamine (thiol) self-assembled monolayer, yielding a suitable substrate for enzyme immobilization, as a possible future application. The electrochemical behaviour of dopamine and ascorbic acid on gold, Glassy Carbon and nanostructures was studied aiming to characterize the modified electrode. The 300 mV shift in the oxidation peak potential for ascorbic acid on gold in relation to Glassy Carbon allows to calculate the nanostructure coverage factor by the peak current inhibition as 43%. Finally, dopamine was employed to detect the self assembled monolayer formation on the Au nanostructure through its voltammetric behaviour. The variation in the oxidation potential for DA on gold and self assembled monolayer was used as an indicator for such modification.

As it examines the relation between cinema and history alongside the historiographical debates in Ireland, it seeks to show how cinematic representations of Irish history evolved throughout this period. During the first half of the twentieth century Irish films mainly conveyed a mythic vision of Ireland's past, the aim being to legitimise the institutionalised national identity. From the 1970s onwards, in a double movement of openness and closure, historical films have under the influence of revisionist and postcolonialist theories challenged traditional representations while asserting the latter's relevance when it comes to rebuilding a new identity

It brings out the psychological and affective forces of the quest to distinguish the determining factors of a foreign reality, it asks questions about objectivity and subjectivity, about the importance of the body, and, through the notion of "cinematic perception", try to understand how film-maker's memory and intentionality is at work inside travel movies. The second part treats the exploration of territories, the relation between the film-maker and the landscape, the otherness (strangeness and stereotypes) and the construction of identity which raises the problem of the commitment of the travel-film-maker. The third part examines the choices in relating travels and their implications in terms of coherence and sincerity of narration. It requires to find the enunciation's authorities and leads to propose the concept of personal enunciation

The theatre gather them all in its space to create the setting and the atmosphere which correspond to show. We come to the conclusion that the new technologies must work with care, experience, skill and extreme sensibility in the theatrical space. We also have to take into account that they are not a goal in themselves, but that they do take part in a dramatic creation by the living actor who always dominates the show as well as the theatrical substance. The relationship between the living actor and the theatrical space with its different times, spaces, philosophies and tendencies, represents the relationship between the human being and the world in a aesthetical and dramatical style

Full textThe aim of this dissertation is to question sociologically the “housewives model” and to break with false familiar representations. This research is based on a qualitative study and uses direct observation and interviews. It gives those women the opportunity to express themselves and focuses on how little recognition they gain from their activities. The first chapter is a preamble to our analysis. It aims at assessing the “sociometric and conceptual” framework. By calling into question the statistical categories and theoretical presuppositions, it highlights the need for understanding how these women participate in the construction of the social reality, at the end of often complex arbitrations. The second chapter entitled “home space and time” is devoted to the process of subjectivation of the situation. We will go through an analysis of the significance these women give to their situation in light of the remarks collected from the interviews. We will try to comprehend the symbolic and material reality of “home” and to distinguish the identitarian and social dynamics implied in the biographical interval of home. The third chapter entitled “a critical approach to everyday life” describes the links between some forms of “domestication” of the social universe through household practices and rites. The relationship between “recognition and subjectivity” reveals the effects of social invisibility upon the individuation process. In conclusion, letting housewives speak means reaffirming the power of words in the city-state life and underlines the urgency and the difficulties for the political and scientific projects to integrate the difference that the housewives do live

Full textThe irruption of talking pictures is generally presented as a fundamental theoretical and technical break in the history of cinema. Through the question of silence in talking pictures, our thesis aims, on the contrary, to show which preoccupations and which profound and continuous trends enrich the domain of sound in cinema since its origins. The theoretical advances of French research allow us to compare and link the thought of Béla Balázs and that of Michel Chion on the cinematic poetics of silence. In a diachronic perspective, going back to emblematic figures of silent film like Harpo and Mabuse, to silent bodies of modern characters such as Elisabet Vogler (Persona, 1966) or Xiao-Kang of The River (1997), the study aims to differentiate and link two filmic mutisms ; the first, conscious and voluntary, endowed with various narrative functions at the time of silent film, allows a first form of otherness to be drawn ; the second type of body of mutism, at the time of talking pictures, is exemplified through a select number of landmark films, allowing a typology of otherness to be defined between strangeness (Persona), exile (Chronicle of a Disappearance and Divine Intervention by Elia Suleiman), resistance (The Island by Kanedo Shindo, Libera me by Alain Cavalier), marginality (The River, The Hole by Tsai Ming-liang). . . The goal of the dissertation is therefore to be both an archeology of modernity and a genealogy of cinematic incarnations of otherness
