Abstract:
Introduction. Concern for health and interest in healthy eating with food rich in vitamins and minerals, more natural, less processed and no toxic waste is a reality. The reason why individuals choose their food and how they make these choices is an important step in making appropriate dietary guidelines, since several factors such as attitude, habits, values, beliefs and social norms affect the way consumers live, buy and consume. Objective. Study the health interest and buying behavior of organic products in students and staff of the School of Public Health / USP. Methods. A total of 221 volunteers answered a questionnaire composed of Health Attitude Scale (HTAS), questions about consumer behavior and demographic aspects. We conducted a descriptive analysis of data, and association tests by the Pearson´s chi-square test, Kruskal-Wallis test to verify the differences among distributions and exploratory factor analysis with Varimax rotation to identify factors which influence the purchase of organic food. Results. The subscale of Interest in General Health had the highest average (5.03). It identified a greater interest in light products among men and natural products for women. The decision to purchase organic products is associated to income (p = 0.022) and among those who purchase, environmental protection is the most important factor, followed by health, information and market, besides having greater interest in overall health and products natural. Conclusion. The greatest attitude towards health was observed among those who actually buy organic products because they have more interest in general health and natural products, looking for a healthier diet with less processed foods and chemicals.

Turner, Erlanger A. "Attitudes toward child mental health services: adaptation and development of an attitude scale." Texas A&M University, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/4215.

Full text
Abstract:
Research shows that a considerable number of children and adolescents suffer needlessly from psychological problems and only about 50% of those receive the necessary services. Considering the impact of untreated child psychological problems on problems in adulthood, it is important to examine the influence of attitudes on seeking mental health service for children. Currently, no known measure exists to measure attitudes toward mental health services for children. Building on previous research, the goal of the present study was to develop a measure of individuals' attitudes toward mental health services for children. Using confirmatory factor analysis, the factor structure was assessed using a sample of university students (N = 250). In addition, several hypotheses were tested examining the influence of previous experience with mental health services on attitudes towards psychological services and mental health stigma. Finally, differences in child characteristics on intended help-seeking were examined. The measure developed consists of 26-items scored from 0 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). Overall, results indicated that the 3-factor structure of the measure developed was valid and reliable. Also, consistent with previous research on mental health services results supported the hypotheses of the current study. Future research will examine whether the 3-factor structure is replicated using a sample of parents.

Brown, Diane Peacock. "Occupational Therapy Academic Program Faculty Attitudes Toward Tenure as Measured by the Tenure Attitude Scale." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2002. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc3265/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explored attitudes of occupational therapy faculty toward tenure and selected alternatives to tenure. A survey method was employed, and the Tenure Attitude Survey Instrument, (TASI), was created for use in the study. Additionally, a questionnaire sought information regarding respondents' rank, tenure and administrative status, institutional type, and years in academia. Participants were accredited occupational therapy professional program faculty who identified their primary work setting as "Academic" on the 2000-2001 American Occupational Therapy Association membership survey. Factor analysis of 577 surveys examined the structure of scores on the TASI, and the instrument consisted of 4 scales, and 18 items, as follows: Scale One: Attitude toward academic freedom and job security protection, 7 items; Scale Two: Attitude toward tenure in general, 6 items; Scale Three: Attitude toward stop-the-tenure clock provisions, 2 items; and Scale Four: Attitude toward post-tenure review, 3 items. Cronbach's alpha was conducted, as follows: TASI overall alpha = .7915; Scale 1 alpha = .7884; Scale 2 alpha = .8420; Scale 3 alpha = .7020; Scale 4 alpha = .4229. Proportional analysis showed that most respondents were full time faculty (88.1%); taught full time at public institutions (52.8%); were tenured or tenure-track (55.5%); had no administrative duties (70.5%); with a rank of instructor or lecturer (17.5%), or assistant professor (45.7%). Time in academia ranged from 1-40 years, with a mean of 11.27 years, median of 9.25 years, and mode of 4 years. Attitudes toward, and support for, the continuation of tenure and for selected proposed alternatives to tenure were analyzed according to the following: faculty rank, administrative status, and tenure status. Respondents held generally favorable attitudes toward tenure as measured by Scales 1 and 2 of the TASI, and the best predictors of faculty attitude toward tenure were tenure status and rank. Due to low reliability scores on Scales 3 and 4, no conclusions can be drawn regarding respondents' attitudes toward alternatives to tenure.

Abstract:
Correctional officers’ attitudes toward prisoners are of importance for prisoners to positively change during their sentence in prison. The purpose of this study was to review the attitudes of correctional officers toward prisoners and if different variables like gender and education had any effect on the attitude. A self-declaration survey was done with the ATP-scale at three different prisons and one custody facility. A total of 28 correctional officers responded to the survey, two of them was counted as outliers and was not included in the result. The result showed that Swedish correctional officers had more negative attitudes toward prisoners than found in earlier studies from USA and Norway. The study also found that female correctional officers had more positive attitudes than their male co-workers and that education not always led to a more positive attitude toward inmates.

Altareb, Belkeis Y. "Attitudes towards Muslims : initial scale development." Virtual Press, 1997. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1063195.

Full text
Abstract:
This investigation examined attitudes towards Middle-Eastern Muslims held by non-Muslim undergraduate students and was conducted in three phases. Phase one explored these attitudes through focus groups and found that although participants had little information about Muslims, they had definite attitudes. Focus group participants reported that Muslim men and women possessed particular characteristics and that much of their information was learned through movies and/or media sources. During phase two of the study, all measures utilized in the present study were examined for reliability of at least .70. In addition, the ATMS was developed from a review of the literature and of focus groups. All measures were shown to be reliable except the cognitive complexity measure. During phase three, factor analyses were conducted to address the validity of the ATMS. A final five-factor, 25-item scale resulted. The five factors were interpreted as Positive Feelings about Muslims, Muslims as Separate or Other, Lack of Personal Choice/Freedom, Fear of Muslims, and Dissimilarity with Muslims. Correlation analyses supported initial evidence of construct validity. A discussion of the results and its implications are provided.

Bogle, Brandon Coy. "Initial Development of the Sex Offender Attitude Scale." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2009. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/1881.

Full text
Abstract:
As long as the public maintains staunch and unwarranted negative attitudes toward sex offenders, little hope remains for released sex offenders to successfully reintegrate into society. Therefore, it is in the interest of society that we understand the nature of views of sex offenders so that attempts can be made to promote maximal reintegration and preventing recidivism. To date no valid psychometric instrument exists that measures attitudes toward sex offenders. Therefore, the purpose of this project is to develop such an instrument that will accurately measure stigma associated with sex offenders. Unrotated Prinicipal Components Factor Analysis revealed a single interpretable factor comprised of 17 of the original 27 items with factor loadings of .4 or greater. Chronbach's Alpha Reliability Procedure (a=.88) indicates the SOAS is a valid instrument. The findings suggest possible uses of the SOAS in a variety of areas of sex offender rehabilitation, including treatment and reintegration programs.

Abstract:
The tolerant attitudes towards sexual violence against women constitute an important risk factor that should be considered to explain this type of aggressive behavior. One of the instruments that evaluates these attitudes is the Rape Supportive Attitude Scale (RSAS) developed by Lottes. The results of different psychometric studies have demonstrated good indexes of reliability and validity in American, Spanish and Salvadorian university students. The purpose of the study was to explore the psychometric properties of the RSAS in Argen tinean university students. We provide evidence of content validity through expert ratings, process validity through cognitive debriefing interviews, and evidence of internal structure through exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Finally, the internal consistency of the scale was estimated and an analysis of contrasting groups in relation to gender was con ducted. The results allow us to infer that the RSAS scale is a valid and reliable tool to assess rape supportive attitudes in Argentinean university students.

McMillan, Emily Elizabeth. "Environmental Attitudes of Homeschoolers in Canada." Thesis, Laurentian University of Sudbury, 2013. https://zone.biblio.laurentian.ca/dspace/handle/10219/2025.

Full text
Abstract:
Environmental attitudes are shaped by a variety of factors including our educational history, cultural background, childhood and life experiences, and past and current interactions with nature. This research set out to examine attitudes toward the environment in an understudied but growing segment of the Canadian population, homeschoolers. The purposes of this study were to investigate whether environmental attitudes in Canadian homeschoolers differ from those of people involved with public school and to acquire a greater understanding of the factors that affect the development of these attitudes. The mixed method, follow-up explanatory research design utilized the New Ecological Paradigm Scale and the Connectedness to Nature Scale in an internet survey. The survey was sent to homeschooling and parent groups across Canada. Subsequently, interviews were conducted with a subsample of respondents. The results of the survey showed that demographic variables were not significantly related to environmental attitude scores with the exception of locale and religion. Urban respondents had slightly stronger environmental attitudes than rural respondents. The confluence of homeschooling and religiosity emerged as the key factor influencing environmental attitudes. There was no significant difference between environmental attitudes of homeschoolers and public schoolers until importance of religion was taken into account. As measured by the scales, religious homeschoolers exhibited the weakest environmental attitudes, public schoolers were in the middle, and not-as-religious homeschoolers had the strongest environmental attitudes. The qualitative data supported these results, with religious homeschoolers expressing weaker iv environmental attitudes, particularly in terms of climate change and the need for a more sustainable lifestyle. Religious homeschooling respondents favoured a more structured back to basics style of schooling which also correlated with lower environmental attitude scores. Unstructured homeschooling respondents tended to choose a child-centred philosophy of education which was correlated with stronger environmental attitudes. During the interviews, respondents were asked to reflect on what in their lives had influenced their attitudes toward the environment. Consistent with other literature, unstructured outdoor time as a child remained the most significant factor, cited by a majority of respondents. Other important factors included religion, parents, school, teachers, TV/media, economic necessity, and negative experiences with environmental pollution. The results of this study highlight the importance of considering variables associated with religion when exploring the development or level of environmental attitudes or when conducting a study of homeschooling. Religious beliefs are complex and highly personal in some cases, as is their corresponding influence on environmental concern. Potential exists for environmental concern and action from a group of spiritual people with strong community bonds and often political involvement. The key may be finding common ground and learning to communicate, while resisting expectations of complete agreement. This dissertation showed that stepping outside of the educational system does not necessarily have a direct impact on environmental attitudes, as they are mediated by a complex array of variables. Homeschooling may not directly generate a different level of environmental attitudes than public school; however, religious v homeschoolers definitely have a different set of attitudes toward the environment that deserve further in-depth study.

Abstract:
Researchers interested in measuring people's underlying attitudes towards an object (e.g., abortion) often collect Likert data by administering a survey. Likert data consist of surveyees' responses to statements about the object, where responses fall into ordered categories running from `Strongly agree' to `Strongly disagree' or into a `Don't Know / Can't Choose' category. Two examples of Likert data are used for illustrative purposes. The first dataset was collected by the author from American and British graduate students at Oxford University and contains items measuring underlying abortion attitudes. The second dataset was taken from British and American responses to the 1995 National Identity Survey (NIS) and contains items measuring underlying national pride and immigration attitudes. A model for Likert data and underlying attitudes is introduced. This model is more principled than existing models. It treats people's underlying attitudes as latent variables, and it specifies a relationship between underlying attitudes and responses that is consistent with attitudinal research. Further, the formal probability model for responses allows people's interpretation of the response categories to differ. The model is fitted by maximising an appropriate likelihood. Variants of the model are used to analyse Likert data in three contexts; in each, the method using our model compares favourably to existing methods. First, the model is used to visualise the structure underlying the abortion attitude data. This method of visualization produces more sensible plots than analogous multivariate data visualization methods. Second, the model is used to select the statements whose responses (in the abortion attitude data) best reflect underlying abortion attitudes. Our method of statement selection more closely adheres to attitude researchers' stated aims than popular methods based on sample correlations. Third, the model is used to investigate how underlying national pride varies with nationality in the NIS data and also how underlying abortion attitude varies with gender, religious status, and nationality in the abortion attitude data. Unlike methods currently used by social scientists to model the relationship between attitudes and covariates, our method controls for the effects of differing response category interpretation. As a result, inferences about group differences in underlying attitudes are more robust to group differences in response category interpretation.

Abstract:
The purpose of this dissertation was to develop the Scale of Educational Attitudes (SEA). Theoretically, students' attitudes towards education can be separated into four categories: Academically Disinterested, Occupation-Driven, Pure Scholar, and Profession-Driven Scholar. The SEA can determine which attitude a student has towards school based on his/her responses to the Learning Orientation & Motivation and Future Goals Achievement subscales of the SEA. This instrument was developed in four phases. In the first phase, the items of the SEA were written based on the literature. In the second phase, a factor analysis was conducted to eliminate weak items and to identify underlying constructs of the scale. The third phase consisted of another factor analysis as well as the validation of the scale with other established scales. The final phase tested the temporal stability of the SEA using test-retest data. The resulting scale contains eighteen items that measure learning orientation and motivation as well as fifteen items that measure future goals achievement.

Abstract:
The present study examined the psychometric properties of a new instrument, the Multidimensional Attitude Toward Older Adults Scale (MATOAS), administered to a total of 787 undergraduate students at a Midwestern university. Factor structure of the MATOAS was investigated with a split-sampling approach in order to cross validate the findings between exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). EFA suggested a four-factor structure with 25 items. These factors were named Respect and Appreciation (R-A), Irritation and Intolerance (I-I), Work Interests (W-I), and Social Connectedness (S-C). The results of CFA testing of the higher-order four-factor model showed significant improvement in various fit indices from the previously tested tripartite attitudes model (Rosenberg & Hovland, 1960) and the uni-dimensional model. The MATOAS demonstrated fairly high internal consistency reliability (α = .88) and high test-retest reliability over a one week period (r =.89, p < .001). Convergent validity of the MATOAS with the refined version of the Aging Semantic Differential Scale (Polizzi & Millikin, 2002) and divergent validity with the 13-item Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale (Reynolds, 1982) also were promising. The present study provides extensive reviews of the Kogan Attitudes Toward Old People scale (Kogan, 1961 a) and the Aging Semantic Differential (Rosencranz & McNeivin, 1969) as well as established and contemporary guidelines for scale development work.

Abstract: Abstract: This study consisted of three stages and the sample consisted of 148 elderly and 52 professionals bound to continuing education programs. The first stage tackled the semantic and cultural validation of Intergenerational Exchanges Attitude Scale (IEAS) into Portuguese of Brazil. This process involved the following phases: initial translation of IEAS; synthesis of translations; back translation; review and pretest. The scale has changed oriented to their cultural refinement and IEAS is adapted and validated for the Brazilian population with the denomination Escala de Atitudes em relação a Trocas Intergeracionais (EATI). The second part of the study derived evidence of construct validity for EATI and investigated correlations between items of the factors that scale with areas of Escala de Crenças em Relação à Velhice. The EATI presented three factors were obtained and higher values for the scale as a whole (? = 0.80) and Factor 3 - Perceptions about the interaction between children and the elderly (? = 0.80) and then for Factor 1 - Perceptions of attitudes of children toward elderly (? = 0.79) and for Factor 2 - Perceptions of elderly attitudes towards children (? = 0.73). Even though statistically significant, correlations between items of the EATI factors and areas of Escala de Crenças em Relação à Velhice were low. Finally, the third part of this study described and compared the behavior of a group of elderly and a group of professionals in the presence of EATI. Compared with professionals, the elderly showed more negative way perceptions of attitudes of children toward elderly (p <0.001) and expressed more positive perceptions of elderly attitudes towards children (p <0.001). There was a statistically significant difference among the elderly that living together and those not living together with children for to score factor Perceptions about the interaction between children and the elderly, being more negative in the elderly who do not live with children (p = 0.003). Professionals working with intergenerational groups presented more positively perceptions of the interaction between children and the elderly (p = 0.015) compared to those working only with older people. It concludes that the EATI can be a useful tool for programs that perform activities among children and the elderly as well as for professionals who develop intergenerational activities. In addition, the EATI had good internal reliability, enabling recommend its use in Brazil in descriptive and intervention studies

Abstract:
The Hope Scale by Snyder and the Recovery Attitudes Questionnaire-7 were used to explore the patterns of hope and attitude toward recovery from schizophrenia in a sample of 100 adults diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder participating in five psychiatric rehabilitation programs in an affluent suburban setting. Using the Hope Scale, which is based on a definition of hope as a future-goal oriented cognitive process, and the Recovery Attitudes Questionnaire-7(RAQ-7), this study concluded that the construct of hope is not synonymous with a positive attitude about attaining the goal of recovery. Though participants reported being generally hopeful and having positive attitudes toward recovery from serious mental illness, the two variables, hope and attitude do not correlate with each other. Nor do individual items from the Hope Scale and the Recovery Attitudes Questionnaire-7 load on the same components during principal components factor analysis, though hope and attitude each account for more than 20% of the total variance of the data set. A serendipitous finding was the statistically significant difference between the means on the RAQ-7 of the sample of the current study and the sample of the instrument development process; across all levels of recovery, a more positive attitude towards recovery was expressed than was expressed seven years earlier. An additional statistically significant finding was the direct positive correlation between level of recovery and number of hours of volunteer service per week. Rather than concentrating on talk therapy with persons with schizophrenia to increase levels of hope and positive attitude before recovery begins, a more effective means of encouraging recovery may be to involve individuals with schizophrenia in meaningful social roles through volunteer work.

Rotzien, Andrea Lee. "The development of a scale to assess attitudes toward teenage parents." Virtual Press, 1992. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/845929.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to develop a valid and reliable scale to measure attitudes toward teenage parents. The instrument, called the Attitude Toward Teen Parent Scale (ATTPS), was based on Robinson's (1988a) suggested myths about teenage fathers. The ATTPS consisted of 20, Likerttype items and was administered to 133 volunteer undergraduate students attending Ball State University. A series of exploratory principal component factor analyses were conducted to identify independent factors represented by the ATTPS. A four-factor solution, accounting for 54% of the variance on the ATTPS was retained . The internal consistency reliability for the ATTPS was .67. Two factors were interpreted as "psychological deviance" (alpha = .77) and "supportive involvement" (alpha = .66). The other two factors were not interpretable. These findings suggested that the ATTPS measured two independent constructs. It was suggested that future research should further test the validity and reliability of the ATTPS by focusing on the two interpretable factors identified in this study, and by increasing the items on the scale as well as the number of subjects tested. Further studies should also examine attitudes among different populations (e.g., varying by race, sex, age, profession) toward teenage parents.

Nowadays, there is a tendency for the Health Services to demand changes both in the professional practices and in the management in order to improve the organizational performance. In a hospital organization, the Social Service doesn`t remain free from this demand, and this scenario took us to the following question: How to adapt the Evidence-Based Practice Attitude Scale (EBPAS) to the Brazilian Health Social Service, and how to validate it? Thus, this research aims to adapt e validate the Evidence-Based Practice Attitude Scale (EBPAS) to the Brazilian Health Social Service, and it offers a version for EBPAS which can measure the social worker`s attitude related to the systematization of the professional practices; such version can be useful for future studies related to the elaboration of social protocols. The present research works based on the methodology proposed by Beaton, Bombardier, Guillemin & Ferraz (2000); Beaton, Bombardier, Guillemin & Ferraz (2007). The translation and adaptation process contains five steps: (i) translation, (ii) back translation, (iii) synthesis of the translations, (iiii) evaluation by an expert commitee and (iiiii) pretest. For the psychometric validation, the results presented suggests that the instrument presents a convergent validation, and it can be considered a useful instrument to measure the social workers` attitude related to the adoption of the Evidence Based Practice, making possible its use in the health services when the professionals` readiness related to the implementation of innovative practices has to be measured. The instrument presented easy comprehension and showed also semantic, idiomatic, experimental and conceptual validation. It is evident the need to broaden the fields of the psychometric validation, as well as to diversify the sampling plan.

Abstract:
Literature on methodology reveals a serious problem related to the use of semantic differential scales to measure individuals’ global evaluations. Two types of evaluations are incorporated—in an artificial and unsuitable way—into these bipolar continuums that contain two opposing adjectives: indifferent reactions and ambivalent reactions. The distinction between these two types of evaluation is significant because they reflect different realities. While indifference corresponds to an absence of positive or negative reactions, an ambivalent evaluation is composed of both positive and negative reactions. This research demonstrates the advantages of using a new measurement tool, the Evaluative Space Grid (Larsen & al., 2009), developed in psychology research; this tool is able to capture the ambivalent component in consumers’ global evaluations. Using a mixed design method comprising five empirical studies, we demonstrate that the Evaluative Space Grid has psychometric properties that match those of semantic differential scales; however, in contrast to semantic differential scales, the ESG is capable of differentiating between indifferent reactions and ambivalent reactions. This research therefore constitutes a major methodological contribution that will be of interest to both researchers and practitioners

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
This study created and tested a measure of the attitudes of health care providers toward integrated health care (IHC). Phase one of this scale development involved contacting experts in IHC to rate the quality of the items and provide qualitative feedback regarding content of the measure. The instrument was further revised based on this expert feedback. The final phase of instrument development was a field test of the measure with a larger, more representative sample of Physicians, Nurses, and Psychologists. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) was used to determine the factor structure of the measure and to inform the final item composition of the measure. The Attitudes Toward Integrated Health Care scale (ATIHC) appears to be a reliable, valid, and potentially useful instrument for researchers and health care settings to use to assess professionals attitudes toward health care integration. It taps general positive and negative attitudes as well as ideas about characteristics that facilitate health care integration. Since there is now a base knowledge of health professional's attitudes toward IHC, work needs to be completed to better discern which items will differentiate between participants with positive and negative attitudes. Further, it will be essential to highlight items having the largest practical implications in health settings. In order to determine the most relevant questions to be included in the ATIHC and the corresponding most appropriate factor structure, further research should be completed with a larger and more representative sample of participants who posses a wider range of attitudes.

Abstract:
Sex offenses in the United States are a major public health concern. Attitudes toward sex offenders are generally very negative and to be officially identified as a sex offender brings on collateral consequences that reduce incentives not to reoffend. The extent to which attitudes toward sex offenders affect discriminatory behaviors and collateral consequences is not fully understood. The Sex Offender Attitude Scale was developed in an attempt to reliably and accurately measure attitudes and stigma toward sex offenders. Initial analyses indicated the SOAS was a reliable and valid instrument. This study aimed to provide additional evidence of the psychometric properties of the SOAS via statistical analyses, and findings supported this overarching goal. Future research and clinical implications are discussed.

Brown, Jessica. "The Teacher Attitudes toward Homeless Students Scale: Development and Validation." Thesis, Boston College, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/2587.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Larry H. Ludlow
Recent estimates suggest there are roughly 1.6 million homeless children and this number is growing (National Center on Family Homelessness, 2011). This trend is particularly worrisome given that homeless children face a number of obstacles within society and education, not the least of which is negative teacher attitudes (Swick, 2000; U.S. Department of Education, 2002). This study's primary research question addressed whether a set of underlying dimensions could be identified and used to effectively measure teacher attitudes toward homeless students. A necessary part of answering this research question involved the development of a measurement scale. Both Classical Test Theory and Item Response Theory analyses aided in the elimination process of items in order to create the final Teacher Attitudes toward Homeless Students (TAHS) assessment, which includes an attitudes scale and subscales, and a related knowledge scale. The final outcome was a set of 43 items, across eight dimensions, which could effectively be used to measure teacher attitudes toward homeless students. Additionally, the findings upheld the principles of Rasch measurement, including unidimensionality, a hierarchical ordering of items, and a continuum of the construct definition. In other words, the findings indicate that the TAHS scale was successfully developed according to explicit a priori measurement criteria. Moreover, additional correlational and regression analyses provided empirical construct and convergent validity evidence for the TAHS scale. It was also found that attitudes differed slightly for teachers of various backgrounds and experiences, but when analyzed collectively these variables were not significantly related to teacher attitudes toward homeless students. Additionally, there was only a weak relationship between teachers' attitudes and their knowledge about homelessness. Overall the TAHS scale allows for reliable and accurate measurement of teacher attitudes toward homeless students from which valid inferences can be made. The TAHS scale scores and score descriptors can be used to help teacher interpret their attitude. This has the potential for a direct impact in creating equal educational opportunities for homeless students as teachers become aware of their attitude and make positive changes

Abstract:
This work presents the evaluation and refinement of a chemistry attitude measure, Attitude toward the Subject of Chemistry Inventory (ASCI), for college students. The original 20-item and revised eight-item versions of ASCI (V1, V2, V3 and V3.1) were administered to different samples. The evaluation for ASCI had two main foci on the psychometric properties: reliability and validity. Both psychological theory and factor analysis techniques were applied to guide instrument refinement. Evidence for good reliability and validity was established for ASCI V2 score interpretation. The two-factor correlated structure was supported by confirmatory factor analysis. The two subscales, intellectual accessibility and emotional satisfaction, are indicators of cognition and affect components of attitude, and thus we can make good connection with tripartite attitude framework (cognition, affect and behavior) in psychology. As regards to attitude-achievement relationship, other than the well-known aptitude test score, students' attitude played a significant role in predicting final achievement in General Chemistry I course. This work represents the first time in the area of chemical education that a benchmark for scale development was successfully implemented to reconstruct an existing instrument. In addition to showcasing a method for examining validity, a second important result of this work is to recommend refinements that lead to greater ease of administration while improving validity: this eight item instrument now takes very little time to administer.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to develop an instrument to measure healthcare professionals’ knowledge and attitudes about near-death experiences (NDEs) that would demonstrate acceptable psychometric properties. In consultation with a focus group of six NDE experts, I developed the 50-item Knowledge and Attitudes toward Near-Death Experiences Scale (KANDES), including the 24-item KANDES–Attitude subscale (KANDES-A) and the 26-item KANDES–Knowledge subscale (KANDES-K). Including a pilot administration in which feedback indicated no need for revision, a total of 256 professional and student counselors completed the KANDES. Separate reliability and validity analyses were conducted for each subscale. For the KANDES–A, Cronbach’s alpha was .909, and Pearson’s r for test-retest was .748, both indicating acceptable reliability. An exploratory factor analysis indicated four factors to retain and yielded a factor solution that explained 54.87% of the variance, an acceptable amount of variance to substantiate construct validity. For the KANDES–K, Cronbach’s alpha was .816, indicating acceptable reliability. For each of the scale’s three domains, Cronbach’s alpha was .816 for Domain 1: NDE Content, .817 for Domain 2: NDE Aftereffects, and .631 for Domain 3: Experiencer Characteristics, indicating acceptable reliability. Pearson’s r for test-retest on the total KANDES–K was .812, further demonstrating acceptable reliability.

Abstract:
The study goal was to construct and psychometrically validate a negative’s attitudes towards trans people scale (EANT) as an expression of prejudice against trans. Two interdepen- dent sequential studies through questionnaires are reported, both rely on non-probabilistic samples: Study 1, involves 203 participants, mainly college students, addresses the construction and exploratory analysis of the EANT. Study 2, involving 408 participants assigned according to s ociodemographic quotes established by the national census in the general population, shows confirmatory factor analysis and external validation of the scale. A sole factor 9-item instrument, with acceptable internal consistency (α = .886) was obtained. The results suggest good applicability in general population studies. Expected relations with typical variables (ATLG, RWA, SDO and religiosity) were procured.

Wickett, Daniella. "The development of a scale to assess attitudes to advance statements." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/31248.

Abstract:
A review of 32 articles appeared to suggest that a general sense of perceived control was related to favourable outcome. Control over symptoms, illness and treatment might all have beneficial effects for psychological adjustment and well being. The evidence is less consistent for general and specific health locus of control beliefs, although there is some evidence to suggest mediational and moderational roles. Perceived control was concluded to be an important variable for understanding the relationship between physical illness and adjustment or distress.;Research aim: to develop an acceptable, valid and reliable scale that could be used to assess attitudes to Advance Statements with people aged over 50 years old.;Method: Scale items were developed from a qualitative analysis of the literature. An initial scale of 40-items was piloted with 46 participants. Following feedback from the pilot sample and a focus group, the scale was amended. The responses from 180 participants were used to analyse the internal consistency of the scale. Principal components analysis (using varimax rotation) was used to determine the component structure and identify items for removal.;Results: A two-factor 28-item scale was produced, which had a coefficient alpha of 0.862 and split-half reliability of 0.890, suggesting the scale to be reliable.;Discussion: The scale has a number of potential clinical and research applications. However, further work is needed to establish psychometric properties and generalisability.

Jones, Jackie Denise. "Postpartum Mothers' Attitudes Toward Breastfeeding." ScholarWorks, 2017. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/4639.

Full text
Abstract:
Breast milk is the optimal source of nourishment for babies, providing positive nutritional and psychosocial benefits for infants' growth and development. Rates for initiation of breastfeeding and exclusive breastfeeding at 6 months in the United States are well below the target rates for the Healthy People 2020 Maternal, Infant, and Children's Health objectives. Using Ajzen's theory of planned behavior, the purpose of this project was to ascertain how knowledge and attitudes influenced a mother's intent to breastfeed during her hospital stay and the likelihood of exclusive breastfeeding continuing after discharge. A convenience sample of 68 postpartum mothers was recruited from women who delivered a viable infant between January and March 2017 at a large urban teaching hospital. Mothers completed the 17-question 5-point Likert scale instrument, the Iowa Infant Feeding Attitude Scale, and demographic information before discharge from the hospital. Mothers who planned to breastfeed and mothers who did not plan to breastfeed scored above the midpoint on the scale; however, women who intended to breastfeed after discharge scored significantly higher (p < .001). Demographic variables were not significant with the exception of education level. Women with higher education levels scored higher on the scale and were more likely to plan to breastfeed after discharge than women with lower levels of education. Findings may promote social change through development and implementation of tailored nursing interventions, such as community prenatal education and clinical reinforcement, which will support initiation of breastfeeding in the hospital setting and exclusivity of breastfeeding upon discharge.

Abstract:
AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF CHRISTIAN H. BRYANT, for the Master of Arts degree in PSYCHOLOGY, presented on 12 NOVEMBER 2009, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. TITLE: AN EXAMINATION OF THE PSYCHOMETRIC PROPERTIES OF THE ATTITUDES TOWARD BLACK MALES SCALE MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. Kathleen Chwalisz This survey-based study was conducted in order to examine the utility of the Attitudes Toward Black Males Scale (ATBM; Bryson, 1998). The sample included 224 undergraduate students from a Midwestern university. A principal components analysis was conducted in order to assess the consistency of the current factor structure of the ATBM with the eight-factor structure proposed in Bryson's (1998) scale construction study. Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated between the ATBM and other general and Black-specific racial attitude measures in order to assess the construct validity of the ATBM scale. The results of this study did not support the factor structure of the ATBM as identified by Bryson (1998). Therefore, the utility of the Attitudes Toward Black Males Scale is called into questions as an assessment of general racial attitudes toward Black men based on findings with the current sample.
