Abstract:
Despite the fact that suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the United States, there are currently no US Food and Drug Administration-approved treatments for suicidal behavior. However, interventions that provide potentially effective treatment are available. This chapter explores medications and biological interventions as well as psychosocial, alternative, and app/Internet-based interventions. The section on medications and biological interventions covers clozapine, lithium, and ketamine. The psychosocial intervention section covers dialectical behavior therapy, cognitive–behavioral therapy for suicidal patients (CBT-SP), Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS), attachment-based family therapy, and safety planning. The section on alternative and Internet-based interventions covers mindfulness meditation as well as online applications that can act as supplements to traditional treatments. The chapter concludes with a reminder of the importance of suicide risk assessment and clinician self-care in suicide prevention.

Abstract:
Based on attachment theory and decades of research on attachment processes and relationships, this chapter shows that attachment security, experienced in relationships with sensitive and responsive parents and partners across the life span, fosters positive attitudes toward both self and others, and also provides a foundation for desirable psychological states discussed in the Buddhist literature: mindfulness, self-compassion, and nonattachment. We review research involving children, adolescents, and adults showing that the major forms of attachment insecurity—anxiety and avoidance—interfere with healthy self-approval and self-acceptance, and also with kindness and generosity toward others. Self-acceptance and self-compassion are not “egoistic” in the negative sense; far from being psychologically and social destructive, they are foundations of openness and kindness toward others. The usual origin of attachment-related security is supportive relationships in childhood, but security can also be increased by later relationships and by laboratory and clinical interventions.

Abstract:
Abstract: Body image concerns can create challenges in a cancer survivor’s partnered relationship, and aspects of this relationship can influence how a survivor copes with body image concerns. This chapter describes both research and clinical interventions focusing on couples experiencing body image distress associated with cancer and its treatment. First, the chapter reviews observational and couple-based intervention research relevant to the problem of body image distress and the partnered relationship. Next, it offers an overview of conceptual principles relevant to couple-based clinical approaches, focusing on the key concepts of mentalization and attachment narratives. Then it provides detailed guidance on approaches for the assessment, case formulation, and management of body image distress in a relational framework through case examples. Finally, it offers a summary and introduces questions to stimulate future work in this area, including how to best optimize, expand, and disseminate couple-based interventions addressing cancer-related body image concerns.

Abstract:
Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is a structured psychological treatment developed for the management of depressive disorder that has been further refined and evaluated in the treatment of older adults. IPT is based on attachment, communication and social theories and focuses on the interpersonal origins and effects of depression. In this chapter, the delivery of IPT is described and illustrated with a case example. The four possible foci in IPT (complicated bereavement, role transition, interpersonal disputes, and interpersonal deficits) are explained. The evidence base for the efficacy of IPT in late-life depression is reviewed, including the Maintenance Therapies in Late Life Depression trials. Newer applications, including care management interventions and the treatment of anxiety, are described.

Reber, Rolf, and Ara Norenzayan. Shared fluency theory of social cohesiveness. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198789710.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
A shared fluency theory of social cohesiveness is outlined that accounts for disparate phenomena under a unified framework. This starts from the well-known metacognitive feeling of processing fluency (henceforth fluency), which is the subjective ease with which a mental operation is performed. Fluency is extended to the social domain, and the notion of shared fluency is introduced, consisting of two aspects: interpersonal fluency, or the ease with which two people coordinate their behavior, and shared object fluency, meaning that people exposed to the same objects can process these objects more easily. Fluency theory provides new insights in five domains: religious rituals, Confucian virtue ethics, military drill, culturally shared tastes, and place attachment. After a discussion of strengths and limitations of the shared fluency theory, it is concluded that low-level mechanisms, like fluency, may help explain complex social phenomena and open new avenues for feeling-based interventions relevant at a societal level.
