In vivo many forms of glia utilise both intercellular and extracellular pathways in the form of IP3 permeable gap junctions and cytoplasmic ATP diffusion to produce calcium waves. We introduce a model of ATP and Ca2+ waves in clusters of glial cells in which both pathways are included. Through demonstrations of its capacity to replicate the results of existing theoretical models of individual pathways and to simulate experimental observations of retinal glia the validity of the model is confirmed. Characteristics of the waves resulting from the inclusion of both pathways are identified and described.

Abstract:
With the rapid development of power systems, locating and classifying faults is critical to the continuity and reliability of the transmission system. In this thesis, a traveling-wave based technique for fault location and classification on high voltage and extremely high-voltage transmission lines is proposed. The traveling-wave based protection has the advantage of fast response and not being affected by power swing and CTs saturation. In this thesis, the transient characteristics of single line to ground fault (which can be divided into solid fault and arcing fault) and lightning disturbance are extracted by using Clarke transformation and wavelet transformation. The differences among recorded traveling wave arrival times are used to calculate the fault location, and the wavelet energy at different frequency bands is utilized to distinguish between lightning and different kinds of fault. A criterion is proposed according to the energy ratio. The proposed scheme can identify different faults correctly and quickly. In addition, the influence of busbar capacitance, current transformer and coupling capacitor voltage transformer are considered. The simulation of a transmission system has been made in ATP/EMTP, and the calculations have been made in MATLAB.

I denna avhandling föreslås en vågrörelse-baserad teknik för fellokalisering och klassificering av kraftledningar för högspänning och extremt hög spänning. Vågrörelsebaserat skydd har fördelen av snabb respons och att det inte påverkas av kraft fluktuationer och strömtransformsmättnad. I denna avhandling tas momentana egenskaperna av jord till ledningsfel (vilket kan delas in i stumt jordfel och ljusbågefel) och blixtstörning fram med hjälp av Clarke transformation och wavelet transformation. Skillnaderna mellan de uppmätta vågrörelsernas ankomsttider används för att beräkna fellokalisering och wavelet energin vid olika frekvensband, vilket används för att skilja mellan blixt och olika sorters fel. Ett kriterium föreslås enligt energiförhållandet. Det föreslagna systemet kan identifiera olika sorters fel korrekt och snabbt. Dessutom övervägs påverkan av strömskenans kapacitans, strömtransformator och kopplingskondensatorspänningsomvandlare. Simuleringen av transmissionssystem har gjorts med ATP/EMTP, och beräkningarna är gjorda med MATLAB.

Abstract:
This study is concerned with the reflection and transmission of spherical waves at a plane interface between two different media. The phenomenon of the reflection and transmission of spherical waves has been studied by means of analytical methods, numerical computation, and experimental tests. A new integral representation for a spherical wave is obtained by transforming Lamb/Sommerfeld's integral representation. The new integral has no singularity so it allows more accurate numerical integration. A new proof of Lamb/Sommerfeld's integral representation for a spherical wave is presented based on the new integral. By using the new form of solutions for reflected waves and existing solutions for transmitted waves, numerical studies have been carried out to examine. the phenomenon of reflection and transmission. of spherical waves at plane surfaces of discontinuity in material properties. It is shown that the effective critical angle for the total reflection of a spherical wave is greater than that of a plane wave at a hard boundary, and that when the source height increases the effective critical angle for the total reflection of a spherical wave tends to that of a plane wave. It is shown that recent predictions of spherical wave reflection and transmission coefficients greater than 1 at normal incidence under certain condition are probably due to numerical integration error. It also has been found that for spherical wave reflection and transmission, the time average energy flux, normal to a plane parallel to the plane of discontinuity, may locally be in the direction opposite to that of the direction of energy transmission over the plane as a whole. This so-called "backward wave" occurs in an interference between the direct and reflected waves, as well as in a transmitted wave. An indirect test on the theory has been performed to check the pressure field, above a rigid boundary, predicted by the spherical wave theory. Theoretical and experimental results were in good agreement.

Abstract:
Surface waves are electromagnetic waves that are bound to the interface between to media. Zenneck surface waves, the subject of this thesis, have been known about for more than a century. Most recent research has been either very academic in nature or has focused on how to attenuate or stop them propagating with surface waves in general being considered a nuisance and an inefficiency. However, it is the opinion of the author that the Zenneck surface wave has several properties that could provide significant advantages over traditional three-dimensional (3D) wireless communications techniques and one-dimensional (1D) wires in some applications. Yet, to date, no one has utilised its unique and potentially highly useful properties. This research has extended the many existing studies to much higher frequencies, for the first time practically demonstrating Zenneck surface wave propagation above 20 GHz. It has also produced pioneering proof of principle demonstrations at 24 GHz and 60 GHz to prove the assertion that Zenneck surface waves are a viable alternative to existing wired and wireless solutions. To the author’s knowledge, this is the first piece of work to quantitatively assess the loss associated with corners through either simulations or measurements. It is this author’s assertion that this research has reinvigorated Zenneck surface waves as an area of research with Newcastle University recently employing a PhD student to study the utility of Zenneck surface waves for on-chip and off-chip interconnects.

Abstract:
Sourcing energy from renewable sources is currently a key theme in modern society. Consequently, the pace of development of these emerging technologies is likely to increase in the near future, particularly in marine renewables. However, the environmental and ecological impact of many of these new developments in the marine environment is largely unknown. My thesis has focused on one unknown area of interaction; the potential effect of tidal-stream devices on marine mammals. Collision risk is often cited as a key concern. Therefore, my premise was - for marine mammals to avoid a collision with a marine renewable device (assuming they are on a collision course) they must first detect the device. It is well understood that marine mammals use sound and hearing as their primary sense for communication, foraging, navigation and predator avoidance, so it is highly likely that the primary cue for device detection will be acoustic. However, it is not known how operational marine renewable devices might modify the acoustic landscape in these areas, or whether they will be audible to marine mammals in time to alert them to the presence of devices. It has been suggested that the high level of natural and anthropogenic background noise in tidal-stream areas may mask (drown out) the signal of the tidal devices. The acoustic characteristics of underwater noise in shallow coastal waters are currently not well known. My thesis adds data to this knowledge gap by measuring and mapping underwater noise levels in tidal-stream areas.

Abstract:
The instabilities of shallow shear flows are analyzed to study exchanges processes across shear flows in inland and coastal waters, coastal and ocean currents, and winds across the thermal-and-moisture fronts. These shear flows observed in nature are driven by gravity and governed by the shallow water equations (SWE). A highly accurate, and robust, computational scheme has been developed to solve these SWE. Time integration of the SWE was carried out using the fourth-order Runge-Kutta scheme. A third-order upwind bias finite difference approximation known as QUICK (Quadratic Upstream Interpolation of Convective Kinematics) was employed for the spatial discretization. The numerical oscillations were controlled using flux limiters for Total Variation Diminishing (TVD). Direct numerical simulations (DNS) were conducted for the base flow with the TANH velocity profile, and the base flow in the form of a jet with the SECH velocity profile. The depth across the base flows was selected for the' balance of the driving forces. In the rotating flow simulation, the Coriolis force in the lateral direction was perfectly in balance with the pressure gradient across the shear flow during the simulation. The development of instabilities in the shear flows was considered for a range of convective Froude number, friction number, and Rossby number. The DNS of the SWE has produced linear results that are consistent with classical stability analyses based on the normal mode approach, and new results that had not been determined by the classical method. The formation of eddies, and the generation of shocklets subsequent to the linear instabilities were computed as part of the DNS. Without modelling the small scales, the simulation was able to produce the correct turbulent spreading rate in agreement with the experimental observations. The simulations have identified radiation damping, in addition to friction damping, as a primary factor of influence on the instability of the shear flows admissible to waves. A convective Froude number correlated the energy lost due to radiation damping. The friction number determined the energy lost due to friction. A significant fraction of available energy produced by the shear flow is lost due the radiation of waves at high convective Froude number. This radiation of gravity waves in shallow gravity-stratified shear flow, and its dependence on the convective Froude number, is shown to be analogous to the Mach-number effect in compressible flow. Furthermore, and most significantly, is the discovery from the simulation the crucial role of the radiation damping in the development of shear flows in the rotating earth. Rings and eddies were produced by the rotating-flow simulations in a range of Rossby numbers, as they were observed in the Gulf Stream of the Atlantic, Jet Stream in the atmosphere, and various fronts across currents in coastal waters.

Abstract:
The study of Wagner's influence on the modernist novel is an established field with clear room for further contributions. Very little of the criticism undertaken to date takes full cognizance of the philosophical content of Wagner's dramas: a revolutionary form of romanticism that calls into question the very nature of the world, its most radical component being Schopenhauer's version of transcendental idealism. The compatibility of this doctrine with Wagner's earlier work, with its already marked privileging of myth over history, enabled his later dramas, consciously influenced by Schopenhauer, to crown a body of work greater than the sum of its parts. In works by Virginia Woolf and James Joyce, the "translation" of Wagnerian ideas into novelistic form demonstrates how they might be applied in "real life". In Mrs Dalloway, the figure of Septimus can be read as partly modelled on Wagner's heroes Siegfried and Tristan, two outstanding examples of the opposing heroic types found throughout his oeuvre, whose contrasting attributes are fused in Septimus's bipolar personality. The Wagnerian pattern also throws light on Septimus's transcendental "relationship" with a woman he does not even know, and on the implied noumenal identity of seemingly isolated individuals. In The Waves, the allusions to both Parsifal and the Ring need to be reconsidered in light of the fact that these works' heroes are all but identical (a fact overlooked in previous criticism); as Wagner's solar hero par excellence, Siegfried is central to the novel's cyclical symbolism. The Waves also revisits the question of identity but in a more cosmic context – the metaphysical unity of everything. In Finnegans Wake, the symbolism of the cosmic cycle is again related to the Ring, as are Wagner's two heroic types to the Shem / Shaun opposition (the Joyce / Woolf parallels here have also been overlooked in criticism to date). All three texts reveal a fascination with the two contrasting faces of a Wagnerian hero who embodies the dual nature of reality, mirroring in himself the eternal rise and fall of world history and, beyond them, the timeless stasis of myth.

Abstract:
This MSc thesis was a project performed in a start-up that develops sustainable devices to exploit renewable energies, specifically in the field of energy harvesting in small scale. The objective of the thesis is to demonstrate the importance of developing the technical side of a project together with the development of the market. The idea is to enhance the success possibilities and work to get to the market as fast as possible with a minimum sellable product using the resources as efficiently as possible. The market analysis was the first step to be performed to understand what the start-up was getting into, at the beginning it was clear that the generator should be targeted to power remote applications that require small amounts of energy and a market that is not suitable for present technologies such as solar PV or micro wind turbines. After this a series of potential markets were identified in order to limit the research and three opportunities were selected. The buoy market was chosen, it has several sub-markets and the AtoN buoys, Fishing buoys and Meteorological buoys were considered the most important and suitable ones. Once the market was defined, the needs of the clients and users were discovered through research in the form of interviews and bibliographical research. Later on an experimental rig was used to test several models of the prototype under different parameters to select one that was close to what was demanded and that can actually be built. This approach was useful to dedicate resources efficiently, specially time and money. The last part of the thesis was to propose a sustainable business model describing a go-to-market strategy that considered both the limitations of the technology and the testing performed in the scope of this project and the expectations of the market for the proposed product. The methodology was a mixed use of business tools learned in the courses and the experiences of the people who were close to the start-up. There is a final reflection at the conclusions that describe the day-to-day of the start-up and the experiences learned as well as the recommendations for future work.
