Abstract:
The United Kingdom’s Civil Aviation Authority published the national aviation forecast in 2008. The forecast predicts that domestic traffic will increase by 3.5% per year, and that international traffic will grow, on average, by 4.5% during 2010-2020. Based on this prediction, the traffic density will increase dramatically in the future, and airspace will be more and more congested. Usually, there are two potential solutions to deal with this situation: improving the ability of air traffic flow management is one solution; reducing the separation minimum of aircraft is another solution. However, this thesis focuses on the second solution, based on constraints of communication, navigation and surveillance systems (CNS). Cont?d.

Abstract:
The solution for the lack of bandwidth was solved by the recent development of high speed networks technologies, such as Asynchronous Transfer Mode - ATM. The question now is the implementation of systems, which provide support for ATM protocols in an integral way. Nowadays, legacy network applications, based in TCP/IP protocols have been used on top of ATM protocol stack. Such approach generates redundances that have as consequence an increase in the communication overhead. Many models have been developed to provide ATM services directly to applications. The goal of this study was to evaluate the performance of data transfers comparing the TCP/IP protocols over ATM with the performance of data transfers in native ATM mode. The Host ATM Research Plataform (HARP) was utilized on the FreeBSD operating system. This plataform implements Classical IP over ATM, utilizing AAL5 services. Furthermore, it provides an API for ATM sockets, allowing that an application directly access the AAL5 services. Measurements of throughput and investigations about cell loss and delay were carried out altering parameters related to the application and operating system. The parameters adopted were message size and socket buffer sizes.

Abstract:
The wireless and personal communication systems are experiencing an enormous growth due to recent advancements in wireless networking technologies. At the same time the cellular network infrastructure around the world is being upgraded to support the 3rd generation wireless communication networks, as defined by the International Mobile Telecommunications for the year 2000 (IMT-2000) and the Universal Mobile Telecommunication Systems (UMTS) standards. As a result there is great interest in evaluating diverse technologies that can be used to handle the heterogeneous traffic types and at the same time be able to provide quality of service guarantees and ATM has been identified as an ideal transport technology for this type of networks. The research presented in this thesis details the use of the ATM Adaptation Layer 2 (AAL2) standard, which is used to adapt low data rate and delay sensitive traffic in ATM networks. In this work we are interested in evaluating the performance of the AAL2 standard over error-prone wireless links. Therefore we are interested in proposing a mechanism to improve the performance that is observed at the AAL2 layer. The study begins by evaluating diverse analytical models to characterize the bit error process at the physical layer over error-prone links. This study has identified that the Finite State Markov Chain (FSMC) models provide a suitable analytical work frame to evaluate the impact of bit errors at the higher protocol layers, such as the AAL2. Based on the FSMC models we derive analytical expressions to evaluate the impact of bit errors at the AAL2 layer and numerical results are obtained to evaluate the performance of the AAL2 standard over the error-prone links. Later the analytical expressions are used to evaluate the performance improvements at the AAL2 layer when implementing diverse techniques that are commonly used to improve system performance. Such techniques include the use of Forward Error Correction codes and diversity techniques. Finally, a robust frame format is proposed for the AAL2 standard. The proposed frame format improves the performance of the AAL2 standard by introducing a robust mechanism for the delineation of AAL2 packets. In addition, the proposed mechanism can reduce the overhead introduce by the header fields that are required to achieve the delineation of the AAL2 packets inside the payload of the ATM cells.

Abstract:
Authentication and key exchange protocol is vital to the operation of a secure control plane. An inefficiency in the CCITT X.509 protocol is identified and an improvement is proposed so that the extra protocol run is eliminated. This dissertation proposes that the open control model of devolving control from the network equipment offers greatest flexibility for the implementation of secure control functions. An instance of a open signalling based control architecture was outlined and a solution to the secure bootstrap process in such a distributed processing environment is presented. With this flexible and open control model, multiple secure control architectures are possible. This dissertation presents two control architectures which offer secure multicast services and anonymous communication services. The proposed secure ATM multicast control architecture seamlessly integrates naming, dynamic membership, access control and routing architecture with security protection for multipoint-to-multipoint communications. A key element of the architecture is the trusted multicast authority framework which assists group creation control and network access control with the use of the Membership Card. The previously proposed user plane protection mechanisms is also extended to handle multicast channel confidentiality and integrity protection, group key management and dynamic group key change. Anonymous communication is a useful network service of great potential. This dissertation shows how anonymous ATM communication can be built on the infrastructure of the ATM Forum P-NNI framework.

In today's world of integrating voice, video and data into a single network, Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks have become prevalent in the Department of Defense. The Department of Defense's critical data will have to pass through public networks, which causes concern for security. This study presents an efficient solution aimed at authenticating communications over public ATM networks. The authenticating device, Stargate, utilizes a high speed, low level authentication protocol that offers the low cost, flexibility, and extensibility of software, while still capable of yielding performance comparable to hardware based authentication.

Abstract:
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 25-28, 1993 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada
The 1990's has been an era of integrating telemetry systems into networks. With the networking of telemetry systems, communications between systems is increasingly important. The telemetry system is no longer an isolated subsystem and the requirement for ubiquitous, distribution of telemetry data is also increasing. With declining DoD budgets, the cost of providing, not only, range-wide data distribution, but also, inter-range distribution is a major issue. Recent developments in commercial telecommunication data services may provide an answer to the range communications problems. In this paper, the use of Asynchronous transfer Mode (ATM) technology is examined as a means for transporting telemetry and other range data.

Abstract: This Thesis intends to provide network and interworking solutions allowing the use of ATM networks as the transit part of the telephone and narrowband services network, consolidating network evolution and expansion over a common ATM infrastructure. Combining interworking functions and local switches, a non hierarchical transit network is proposed, connecting local switches through direct ATM virtual connections. As basic principies, existing transit network services must be supported, while coexistence with installed telephony infrastructure must be guaranteed, regarding the numbering plan, signalling, clock distribution, accounting procedures and traffic control. Architecture and service capabilities of the telephone transit network and the ATM network are described. Circuit mode to ATM adaptation techniques and network interworking methods are also described. A functional Interworking Unit, logically integrated into the telephone and the ATM networks, is specified. Concepts of ATM virtual trunk groups with dynamic capacity emulating telephone trunk groups, signalling transport procedures and call by call processing architectures and other services support are part of the system specification. Finally an integrated interworking unit implementation approach into a telephone switch is presented.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Over the past few years, many high performance asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switches have been proposed. The majority of these switches have high performance but also high hardware complexity. Therefore, there is a need for switch designs with low complexity and high performance. This research proposes three new ATM switches based on the folded hypercube network (FHC). The performance of the three architectures are studied using a network model and simulation. The major performance parameters measured are the cell loss rate and cell delay time through the switch under uniform, normal, and bursty traffic patterns. To guarantee faster switching of time-sensitive cells, the routing algorithm of the three switches uses a priority scheme that gives higher precedence to the time-sensitive cells. Also, an output buffer controller is designed to manage the buffers in a fair manner. The three proposed switch architectures have lower complexity while providing equivalent or better switching performance compared to other more complex ATM switches described in the literature. This research shows a new approach to designing ATM switches by using the FHC as the switching fabric for the first time instead of using the crossbar, multi-path, or Banyan-based switching fabrics.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Nowadays a very important aspect of telecommunication is quality of services. 3G networks offer all of the customers’ best quality for each type of information including voice/video and data transmission. One of the vast discussion in this area is increasing the throughput and prevent the congestion in rush traffic hours in the network. Congestion occurs when transfer rate in the network is lower than requested rate by application. Congestion leads to cell loss and dropped cells should be retransferred to recover the data which is double job and affect the throughput and even can affect the quality of the services. Time sensitive information (voice/video) requires no data loss and they employ Forward Error Correction (FEC) codes to recover the data. The number of the FEC codes should be kept small to prevent the overload in the network. In this paper I will show that just simple FEC is not enough when network interworks with Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). A powerful buffer management gives higher throughput and in that condition block loss rates reduces. In addition, effective utilization of IuB interfaces that link the Radio Network Controller (RNC) and Base Station (BS) has another effect on throughput. Different service categories are used to transform different type of information. In this paper we have also introduced all kind of information types offered by 3G networks and further analyzed the weakness of the existing transmission phase in 3G networks.

Abstract:
In this thesis, a queuing model for an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) based Multiplexing node is developed. In this model, it is assumed that no cell queuing is done within the multiplexer for the purpose of transmission at a later time. This introduces higher cell loss but simplifies the multiplexing (switching) algorithm which is key to ATM. This also gives constant cell delays per network node. The total network delay suffered by a cell is the sum of propagation delay, and cell transmission and buffering delay within each node the cell traverses. A closed form analytical solution is derived for the above described model and ATM cell loss probabilities (or cell blocking probabilities) are computed for a multiplexer assuming identical sources at the input. This enables us to estimate the bandwidth gain for various levels of cell loss probabilities. The model is also extended to include non-identical traffic sources and multimedia sources at the input of the multiplexer. The cell loss probabilities are studied for these cases as well. Abstract:
ATM is based on the efforts of the ITU-T Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network (B-ISDN) standard. It was originally conceived as a high-speed transfer technology for voice, video, and data over public networks. The ATM Forum has broadened the ITU-Ts vision of ATM for extended use over public and private networks, multi-protocol support and mobile ATM. There are also some ATM applications in High Performance Computing (HPC). ATM is a packet switching technique based on a virtual circuit mechanism. Data flows are statistically multiplexed and communication resources are dynamically shared. Therefore the high performance ATM switch is essential for quality of services (QoS). This thesis introduces typical ATM switch architecture design and analyses design problems. The research objective is to propose a switch architecture design that can solve or improve those existing problems to achieve a superior performance. The research goal is an integrated ATM switch architecture that will handle both unicast and multicast packets. Unlike the usual design for the multicast ATM switch which concentrates on a cell copy network with a unicast switching network, the proposed switch architecture processes the network packets in a single switching block, and allows unicast and multicast packets to co-exist without competing. The switch design has a simple topology and operation principle and is easy to implement. Furthermore, no copy network is required. Three major components are proposed to form the core of the new switch architecture: the parallel buffering strategy for improved buffer performance, the fast table lookup algorithm for packet duplication and routing, and the relay ring controller for solving the contention problem associated with multiple packets destined for the same output port. A mathematical model is presented and its numerical results are analysed. In addition, the simulation algorithms for the proposed switching design are presented and compared against the switching design with input and output buffering strategies. The simulation results are also compared and analysed against the numerical results. A multicast traffic model is also presented. Its performance calculation for the proposed switch is achieved through simulation. Performance analysis is compared against the output buffering switch under the same multicast traffic model. The performance analysis shows that the proposed switch architecture achieves high throughput with low cell loss rate and low time delay. Its performance can be as good as the output buffering strategy or better. Therefore the proposed switch design has solved the problems associated with input and output buffering. This thesis also analyses the complexity of the proposed switch architecture and suggests a topology to build a large scale ATM switch. The suitability and feasibility for production implementation are also addressed.
