Abstract:

Title IX of the U.S. Education Amendments of 1972 has significantly improved women’s access to previously male-dominated areas of education in the United States, but few of these studies have focused on the experiences of women currently in the higher education field. This study explored female head athletic trainers’ perceptions of the role of U.S. higher education institutions in preparing and supporting their achievement of leadership positions in U.S. collegiate sports: it also explored their views on potential changes in current higher education curricula and certification processes. This phenomenological study used Ridgeway’s status construction theory as its theoretical lens for examining the role of higher education in participants’ career progressions. Data were collected from a purposeful sample of 9 female head athletic trainers from various intercollegiate schools in the United States. The trustworthiness of findings was increased through use of the constant comparison data analysis method and sharing transcripts and excerpts of findings with participants. The study findings showed that the participants perceived higher education program preparation and support as limited in both helping women achieve collegiate leadership positions and overcome barriers to professional advancement. Suggestions for improving athletic training educational programs included adding mentorship and role models, experiential learning and interactions with sport personnel, networking opportunities, leadership training, and courses in gender roles and biases. This study promotes positive social change by identifying underlying gender biases inhibiting women’s promotions into sport leadership roles and by providing policy and curricular suggestions for addressing these, thereby promoting greater social equality.

Greenfield, Dominic. "Perceived adequacy of professional preparation in sport psychology among NCAA division IA head athletic trainers." Virtual Press, 1997. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1048391.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to assess Head Athletic Trainers (ATC) of NCAA Division I collegiate institutions perceived adequacy of professional preparation in implementing injury-related sport psychology skills and strategies. A survey instrument was developed and sent to all Head ATCs at NCAA Division IA institutions. Descriptive statistics were computed for information regarding educational background,. years of experience, number of varsity sports served, sport psychology backgrounds, specific sport psychology management strategies used and related perceived competence. Also, independent t-tests were conducted to examine differences in responses between professional preparation/backgrounds of the respondents and their perceived adequacy of preparation when utilizing sport psychology management strategies. Results indicate that 48% of NCAA Division IA Head ATCs have completed a formal course in sport psychology, and that perceived confidence when utilizing sport psychology skills and strategies are higher for this group. Better understanding of the role sport psychology plays in injury rehabilitation will allow ATCs to enhance their athletes' physical recovery from injury.

Abstract:
The assessment of strength and power and the relationship of these measures to functional variables such as speed and vertical jump ability are understood poorly. This is particularly the case when dealing with a long-term preparation for a major event in a sport such as women's soccer. The results of this research suggest that a number of isoinertial speed strength measures may be sensitive to aspects of a training program and therefore be useful tools for determining the level of development of various underlying neuromuscular capacities. Further results provide a question mark about the role of maximum strength in the development of high velocity functional movements, as increases in maximum strength did not correlate to changes in measures of functional performance. An important finding from this research is the potential role of specific isoinertial speed strength parameters in the detection of neuromuscular fatigue. Time course analysis of the results in this study suggests that the use of these measures to detect fatigue warrants further investigation.

Abstract:
This research deals with the different discursive expressions found in a segment of the Brazilian press during the preparations of the Brazilian national soccer team for the World Cups from 1950 to 1966. In this context, we aimed to investigate the emergence of a discourse of expertise among physicians of the Brazilian Sports Confederation (CBD) and their role in the authorization and implementation of new techniques intended to maximize the athletic efficiency of Brazilian footballers. We explored the ways in which some aspects of this process were related to the famous modernization of football management inaugurated by the arrival of João Havelange to the presidency of the CBD in 1958 and the subsequent consequences for continuities and discontinuities in technical questions related to the athletic preparation of players. During this period, the preparation of players on the national team involved initial specialized physical conditioning and the submission of players to a veritable host of medical specialties, including psychological preparation. As a result, this process contributed to the construction of a regime of power and control centered on the bodies of the footballers

Hunter, Heather L. "Impact of a Student-Athlete Career Preparation Program on Athlete Alumni Affinity." Scholarly Commons, 2020. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/uop_etds/3727.

Abstract:
Previous research has indicated the majority of athlete alumni do not give charitable donations to their alma mater or athletics department. With over 4 million former National Collegiate Athletic Association student-athletes, these athlete alumni should have an inherent affinity for their athletics department. The purpose of this research study was to examine the relationship between a student-athlete career preparation program (“Career Program”) and athlete alumni affinity for the athletics department. This study uses the theoretical framework of Social Exchange Theory to examine if an athlete alumni’s affinity for their athletics department increases when they receive support for their career launch. The quantitative quasi-experimental study had two groups of athlete alumni, career program varsity athlete alumni and non-career program varsity athlete alumni, who graduated from one large, public university at the Football Championship Subdivision level. The intervention of the Career Program was provided to one group of athlete alumni. An athlete alumni affinity questionnaire was developed and administered to both groups. The questionnaire received a low response rate with 71 respondents. The Pearson chi-squared test did not show a relationship between athlete alumni affinity and the Career Program. There was no statistical difference indicated between the two groups for the five latent variables of (a) career preparedness, (b) communication, (c) connection, (d) student-athlete experience, and (e) undergraduate experience. Two athlete alumni affinity statements did show significance, and they were related to student-athletes developing a LinkedIn profile and professional resume.

MacNeill, Karen C. "Processes contributing to optimal preparation and performance of Winter Olympic athletes : the athletes' story." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/31422.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this investigation was to explore the processes that contribute to optimal preparation and optimal performance of an athlete competing at the Winter Olympic Games. Using narrative methodology, 4 individual sport athletes (2 male, 2 female) who competed at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in the sports of skeleton, snowboarding, and long track speed skating (one on the all-round team and another on the sprint team) were interviewed using an in-depth, open-ended, semi-structured approach (Rubin & Rubin, 1995). The semi-structured research interview lasted approximately 2-2.5 hours in length, and participants were contacted a second time via email once the data had been analyzed to verify accurate representation of their experience. The qualitative data was analyzed using Lieblich, Tuval-Maschiach, and Zilber (1998) categorical-content narrative analysis approach, which is similar to what is commonly known as content analysis. Narrative accounts, or the athletes' Olympic stories, were also developed through this process. From the narrative analysis, seven themes emerged concerning processes contributing to optimal preparation, and six themes emerged regarding processes contributing to optimal performance. The findings reveal that for optimal preparation of an Olympian, there needs to be development and implementation of a strategic, holistic plan that incorporates processes for balance and recovery, support and mentoring, automating skill and establishing familiarity, and for reflection and monitoring to ensure training potentials are being maximized and that valuable lessons are being extracted. Furthermore, processes contributing to optimal performance at the Olympics require highly functioning self-regulation practices; a level of self-knowledge and self-acceptance that allows detachment from the outcome and freedom to perform authentically; confidence and belief in ability to achieve excellence; perspective, and acceptance and adaptation to current experiences and conditions; focus and engagement in the present moment; and the execution of performance strategies that lead to a high level of performance excellence. Implications for athletes, coaches, and practitioners are discussed, and suggestions for future research are provided.

Abstract:
Thesis (PhD (Sport Science))—University of Stellenbosch, 2006.
Sport performance management has emerged as a specialization in sport science that is focused on providing the athlete and coach with optimal information about training programmes and the support services needed in order to pursue excellence. As a more professional approach to disability sport has grown with the international status of the Paralympics, sport performance management dealing specifically with athletes with disabilities requires development. The purpose of this study was to focus on documenting the delivery of sport science support for three cyclists with cerebral palsy training for the Athens Paralympics. A case study approach was taken in this research that provided sport science support to three cyclists. Documentation of the training experience of each cyclist over 18 months of training leading up to the Games, was accomplished by quantification of daily training as well as periodic laboratory testing. A comprehensive picture was drawn of training intensities, modalities and frequencies for each cyclist during each macro-cycle, with special attention to the following three variables. Power output and lactate Power output and VO2 max Peak and mean sprint power output (Wingate test) Two of the three cyclists perceived the support they received to have been critical to the success of their preparation. The investigator concluded that sport management has an important role to play in the development of disability sport at the elite level, and that a lot more hard training is possible for cyclists with cerebral palsy, than some coaches may have previously believed, especially in terms of intensity and duration.

Abstract:
The primary aim of this study was to examine the time course of change in muscle morphology and vertical jump performance in weightlifters preparing for a national competition. The secondary aim of this study is to examine how perceived recovery and stress state corresponds with alterations in training load leading up to competition. Eleven Olympic Training Site weightlifters completed a 4-week peaking phase for a national competition. Body mass, stress and recovery psychometric measures, and unloaded/loaded (20kg) squat jump height (SJH) were measured weekly and at the competition site. Vastus lateralis cross-sectional area (CSA), muscle thickness (MT) and pennation angle (PA) ultrasound measurements were taken prior to and following the training protocol. In competition, 6 athletes set a personal best in snatch, clean and jerk and/or total. These results suggest that improvements in the loaded SJ and psychometric measures correspond to successful competition performance in some weightlifters. Notably, most weightlifters appeared to be peaked within 3 days of competition.

Abstract:

In this study, I have investigated athletes and brass musicians, and their preparation for tense situations that demand performance at a high level. Examples of that could be concerts, auditions respectively competitions, or matches. My hypothesis before this study was that brass musicians could learn from athletes who possibly have a more well-developed methodic thinking with regard to preparations, both physical and mental, with an aim to be able to deliver with self confidence on a high and stabile level of performance. This proved to be partially correct, but in some aspects I was surprised, both considering the musicians’ awareness, but also considering the athletes lack thereof. The research consists of two questionnaires, in which one is directed to brass musicians and the other directed to athletes (without any specification of specific area or sport). These questionnaires were constructed to be as similar as possible to enable as correct comparisons as possible despite the two group’s obvious differences.

Evans, Marc S. "A Model Curriculum for the Graduate Preparation of Collegiate Basketball Coaches." Thesis, University of North Texas, 1996. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc278777/.

Full text
Abstract:
The purposes of the study were (a) to examine selected areas of knowledge perceived by collegiate basketball coaches as essential for inclusion within a masters degree curriculum for collegiate basketball coaches, then (b) based upon these findings, to construct a model curriculum for the masters degree preparation of collegiate basketball coaches. A survey instrument, Questionnaire on the Areas of Knowledge Essential to Collegiate Basketball Coaches, was constructed and mailed for the purpose of collecting data from NCAA coaches. There were 252 instruments returned (58%). The coaches were asked to respond to topics which they perceived to belong within a graduate curriculum for intercollegiate coaches. The areas of knowledge were extrapolated from the 1995 National Association for Sport and Physical Education National Standards for Athletic Coaches. Chi-square goodness-of-fit tests and paired t-tests were performed on the data. Major findings of the study led to the conclusion that the areas of knowledge (a) training, conditioning, and nutrition; (b) skills, tactics, and strategies; and (c) teaching and administration mean rankings were not significantly different from one another but were significantly different from mean rankings from all other areas of knowledge. The areas of knowledge (d) social/psychological aspects of coaching; and (e) professional preparation and development mean rankings were not significantly different from one another but were significantly different from mean rankings of the other areas of knowledge. The areas of knowledge (f) injuries: prevention, care, and management; and (g) growth, development, and learning mean rankings were significantly different from all other areas of knowledge mean rankings. Additional conclusions were that perceptions of collegiate coaches concerning the seven areas of knowledge were independent of coaching experience, division of NCAA affiliation, academic degree, gender, or the gender of the team they coach. A model curriculum was proposed for the masters degree preparation of collegiate basketball coaches. This curriculum, if implemented, could provide students with the academic preparation needed for a successful career in collegiate basketball coaching.

Abstract:
The present study aimed to understand the experience of transition to retirement among athletes of different sports. Children and young people face periods of transition throughout sports practice and the guidance received can assist helps the development. Several studies point to the consequences in the lives of athletes during retirement, but little is known how they experienced the transition process. We collected the reports of professional athletes, the experience of the transition to retirement, and investigate whether there has been planning for this moment, what was sough as support. We aimed to produce information and reflections that can considering the data collected, generate theory and reflections about psychological interventions to provide support and assistance to athletes after interrupting sports activity. This is qualitative research and open interviews were conducted with a starting question: \"How was your experience during the transition to retirement?\" The study included six former professional athletes, four men and two women from different sports that have retired. The participants were indicated by acquaintances and accepted to participate. For a comprehensive analysis of the narratives were highlighted the most representative excerpts and organized into themes emerging from the accounts and have not been established a priori. The reports were understood as experiences of the participants, aiming to understand the phenomenon of the experience of transition to retirement in athletes. The analysis showed that: 1) The transition process can be useful for the athlete to organize practical and emotional issues in preparing for retirement; 2) Athletes seek support with family, coach or proxy. Most do not seek professional help for psychological care; 3) Though there is a preparation the athletes experience retirement as a loss and go through a bereavement process. A proper care can help them cope with the transition and retirement. Based on the observed aspects guidelines were presented to health, physical education and sport professionals, coaches, family, and people that are close to the athletes. This work may contribute to coaches and other professionals of the sport to understand the feelings experienced during this period and towards the importance of planning for retirement as a form of emotional organization. The efforts are essential to help retired athletes toward greater communication and expression of feelings related to the loss of the sport activity as Oaf symbolic death, believing that proper care can help deal with that moment and resume in another activity

Abstract:
The study collected occupational data from the 99 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I membership institutions head athletic directors. The purpose of this study was to identify common professional preparation and occupational characteristics among NCAA Division I athletic directors. Through issuing an electronic survey, the current study identified common characteristics and themes among Division I athletic directors specifically within the socio-demographical background, educational background, professional experience and career progression, and career and job satisfaction. The study also provided demographic information about the participant’s institutional athletic department. The necessity of this study is not due directly to the current lack of current literature and research within the collegiate administration, rather in reference to literature examining the athletic administration occupational field. The study provides an occupational framework in regards to the career progression, training, and characteristics of NCAA Division I athletic director career field. The study’s purpose was to examine the career growth of NCAA Division I athletic directors, as well as evaluate the demographic and socio-demographics characteristics of the NCAA Division I athletic director. The research and data collected from the study’s participants provided the author the opportunity to create a profile of the athletic administration career field and more specifically, the detailed qualities sought in a NCAA Division I athletic director. The results from the study are beneficial to aspiring persons that wish to work in the field of collegiate athletics administration by correlating common occupational framework for educational requirements, professional experience and years necessary to gather the appropriate experience and also to identify an overview of the job and career satisfaction common among current NCAA Division I athletic directors. In doing so, the study utilized homosocial reproduction as its theoretical framework. The study’s results concluded that the field of athletic administration, and specifically NCAA Division I athletic directors are disproportionally white males (89% white, 90% male), and further examined the educational and professional background characteristics and experiences which lead to this occupational characteristic.

Culpo, Kathleen K. "Athletic training professional preparation: A study of the employed graduates perspective of the clinical education experience." 2004. https://scholarworks.umass.edu/dissertations/AAI3152684.

Full text
Abstract:
Professional preparation involves the dissemination of technical knowledge (knowledge and skill necessary to practice profession) as well as fundamental knowledge (professional values, personal attributes, and behaviors expected of professionals). Athletic training education is in the process of extensive entry-level education reform, and while there has been significant emphasis on the technical knowledge expectations of program graduates, there has not been an emphasis on fundamental knowledge expectations. In the midst of entry-level education reform, including the restructuring of the clinical education experience, a close examination of the student's perspective of the old clinical education experience is warranted. With the restructuring of the clinical education requirement, entry-level athletic training education could be losing, or significantly decreasing, a unique aspect of its education process that may have provided a vital pathway for the dissemination of fundamental knowledge to its future professionals. This study used in-depth interviewing and qualitative analysis to determine what recent program graduates learned in fundamental knowledge, and what types of learning experiences elicited such learning. Six employed recent program graduates participated in two ninety-minute interviews. All interviews were tape-recorded, transcribed, and analyzed. Fundamental knowledge learned included: an understanding of professional roles and responsibilities; a sense of collegiality; a professional identity; socialization into the profession; self-confidence and independence; empathy and compassion; reliability and responsibility; the ability to develop relationships with a variety of personnel; decision-making skills and quick thinking skills; and being part of a team. Learning experiences that elicited these types of learning included: mentoring relationships with supervising ATC's; having a variety of clinical experiences; independent learning experiences; increased clinical expectations and responsibilities; and clinical experiences involving the day-to-day care of student-athletes. The participants of this study struggled with fundamental knowledge issues as they entered the workplace, yet felt comfortable with technical knowledge skills. The findings of this study serve to enlighten athletic training educators to, (1) the need of professional preparation involving technical as well as fundamental knowledge, and (2) the importance of the clinical education experience in delivering such knowledge.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to develop a profile of Christian College physical education faculty members regarding their academic preparation, professional experience, and selected duties, as well as to identify important components of graduate preparation at the doctoral level for future faculty at these institutions. A survey instrument was selected from a review of previous research and adapted for use in this study. The revised instrument was divided into three parts; academic preparation, classroom teaching experience, and coaching and administrative duties. Institutions chosen for the study were selected from the Coalition of Christian Colleges and Universities. Seventy schools with physical education programs were identified. Department heads at these institutions identified 370 faculty members who met the criteria for participation in the study. Two hundred nineteen surveys were returned for a response rate of 58%. The presentation of the findings are presented in the following areas: the profile of faculty members in relation to their academic preparation, teaching experience and coaching and administrative duties; the perceptions of faculty in relation to teaching competence and value of graduate coursework; the faculty member's perceived competence in and importance of certain administrative skills in their current position; and the demographics of institutions represented in this study. Data indicated that faculty who taught in areas outside their graduate preparation perceived themselves as less competent than those with specific graduate coursework in that area. Approximately 28% of courses taught by faculty in this study were taught by faculty without graduate coursework in that area. A large percentage of faculty in the study who coached did so at the secondary level prior to coaching at the collegiate level. They also served as an assistant prior to becoming a college head coach. A majority of faculty (67%) served in some type of administrative capacity during their career. Faculty perceived themselves as more competent in specific administrative skills when they received graduate preparation in those areas.
