Abstract:
This paper aims to demonstrate that with Marck Athias, the Portuguese medicine inaugurated a new chapter in its history, in the Republic period, characterized by the experimental training at the laboratory. Thus, book-based knowledge gave way to a more clinically based approach favouring laboratory practice and basic research within several scientific domains. This new perspective operated important changes in the Portuguese medical community in the first half of century XX. Marck Athias (1857-1946), a Portuguese, was a physician trained at the University of Paris under Mathias Duval (a former student of Santiago Rámon y Cajal). It was in his laboratory that Athias began his career as researcher. Returning to Portugal, Athias founded a research school in physiology and histology which stressed a new approach in medicine based on experimental research. At the beginning of the twentieth century, scientific research in Portugal was virtually devoid of any of the practical clinic aspects. It is in fact Athias who introduced a new scientific perspective in Portuguese scientific community as well as influenced generations of graduate students in several national higher education and scientific research centres associated with Medicine. His influence and impact was due in great part to the underlying ideology of a positivist nature which succeeded in attracting several generations of followers, promoting a new step for the modernization of Portuguese medicine.

Abstract:
We recently proposed a subfamily, Chantiinae Pritchard and Baker, 1962, containing the genera Chantia Pritchard and Baker, 1962 and Diadromus Athias-Henriot, 1960 in the family Phytoseiidae (Chant and Yoshida-Shaul 1986). We have since learned that the genus group name Diadromus Athias-Henriot, 1960 is preoccupied by Diadromus Wesmael (1844) (Insecta: Hymenoptera). The name Chanteius Wainstein, 1962, which was treated in our 1986 paper as a junior objective synonym of Diadromus Athias-Henriot, 1960, therefore becomes the valid name for this genus. In view of this change in nomenclature, the two genera in the subfamily Chantiinae as proposed in our 1986 paper are Chantia Pritchard and Baker and Chanteius Wainstein. We are grateful to Dr. Ian Gauld of the British Museum (Natural History) for having brought this homonymy to our attention.

Abstract:
Amblyseius swirskii Athias-Henriot (Acari:Phytoseiidae) and Euseius scutalis Athias-Henriot (Acari: Phytoseiidae) are important predatory mites for citrus orchards in Turkey. The side effects of insecticides on these predatory mites have been rarely studied. In this study was investigated to the effect of tau-fluvalinate on A. swirskii and E. scutalis. The studies have conducted both laboratory and field. Field studies were carried out detecting of the side effects of tau-fluvalinate on the mixed stages of A.swirskii. and E scutalis. at Seyhan and Kozan districts in Adana, while laboratory studies were evaluated the side effects of tau-fluvalinate on the nymph stages of A. swirskii The studies were carried out following the standard guidelines which were adopted and issued by the IOBC-WPRS Working group ‘Pesticedes and Benefical Organism’. In the field studies, the effects of the pesticides were calculated according to the Henderson-Tilton formula. As a result of study, tau-fluvalinate was determined as toxic on predatory mites in the laboratory studies. Side effects of abamectin, one of the standard toxic acaricides, on predatory mites were found to be “T” (Toxic) according to IOBC class value. Side effects of tau-fluvalinate were found to be ’M’’ (Moderately Harmful) on 7th days while were detected to be “N” (Harmless) on 28th days according to IOBC class value in field condition. The fields studies at Kozan and Seyhan districts showed similar results.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The romance of 'Athis and Prophilias', based on a French source, was previously known only in fragments from three 13th century manuscripts. The new textual witness transmits a scene that is also preserved in an already known fragment, but in a mostly modified version. This suggests that the Athis poem has been completely or at least partially reworked.

Abstract:

Mexico is the Mesoamerican country with the highest number of Castniidae species (12), most of which are found in the dry regions of the country. Among these, Athis hechtiae (Dyar, 1910) was considered a species widely distributed in Mexico after Athis miastagma (Dyar, 1925) was synonymized with A. hechtiae over two decades ago. A genetic and morphological study, as well as details of the natural history of various populations of these two taxa have led us to restore Athis miastagma as a valid species (stat. rest.), increasing the number of castniids recorded in Mexico to 13.

Current knowledge of the Castniidae of Trinidad and Tobago is summarized based on literature, museum specimens, and personal observations. Two new synonyms are proposed: Aciloa palatinus pallida Lathy = Athis palatinus palatinus (Cramer), and Haemonides cronis urichi Lathy = Haemonides cronis cronis (Cramer). One new combination is proposed: Telchin syphax syphax (Fabricius). Erythrocastnia Houlbert is a new subjective synonym of Telchin H bner. Eleven species are now recorded from Trinidad, six of which are remarkably uncommon in collections: Synpalamides phalaris (Fabricius), Eupalamides cyparissias cyparissias (Fabricius), Athis fuscorubra (Houlbert), Feschaeria amycus amycus (Cramer), Castnia invaria trinitatis Lathy, Castniomera atymnius (Dalman) and Telchin syphax syphax. Athis palatinus occurs occasionally on the ridges of the Northern Range. Haemonides cronis is found occasionally on the ridge tops and hill tops of the Northern Range and the Central Range. Telchin licus is the most common and widespread castniid in Trinidad. It is a pest of sugar cane, and we critically review the literature on its other host plants. Xanthocastnia evalthe evalthe (Fabricius) is a forest-dwelling species of the Northern Range. Lasioseius berlesei (Oudemans), Lasioseius youcefi Athias-Henriot, Lasioseius kinikinik n.sp., and Lasioseius confusus Evans were collected from grassland soils in Colorado. Lasioseius berlesei and L. youcefi are known only from the female, and for the first time in an ascid mite, we experimentally demonstrate that they reproduce by thelytokous parthenogenesis. Both species are omnivores that will feed on fungi and animal prey, and they share a multidenticulate ridge apposed to a groove on the paraxial faces of the chelicerae which appears to function as a mashing and filtering mechanism during mycophagy. Similar cheliceral structures are lacking in L. kinikinik n.sp. (described in this paper), a bisexual species that must mate to produce eggs, and does not feed on fungi. Diagnoses are presented for L. berlesei, L. youcefi, and L. confusus, and their sperm reception structures (spermatheca, etc.) are illustrated for the first time. Based on the study of type specimens, new morphological evidence, and rearings, we propose that (i) the previous synonymy of L. confusus with L. berlesei be rejected; (ii) Lasioseius mcgregori Chant, 1963 is a junior synonym of L. youcefi Athias-Henriot, 1959; (iii) L. scapulatus Kennett, 1958 is a junior synonym of L. dentatus (Fox, 1946); and (iv) L. furcisetus Athias-Henriot, 1959 is the correct name for L. penicilliger sensu Evans, 1958 and subsequent authors, not Berlese, 1916; L. lanciolatus Chant, 1963 is a junior synonym of L. furcisetus.

Abstract:
AbstractThere is circumstantial and documentary evidence that printing from stereotype plates was being undertaken by Joseph Athias in Amsterdam no later than September 1673. The terms of an agreement of that date between Athias and the Widow Schippers and Anna Maria Stam imply that he had two English bibles in plates, one a twelvemo, the other an eighteenmo. The eighteenmo can be equated with an edition with engraved title-page with the imprint 'Cambridge, Roger Daniel, 1648', the last in a sequence of four with the same imprint, each of which carries over from its predecessor a certain amount of setting. The earliest in the sequence appears to have been printed by Joachim Nosche in Amsterdam. That the fourth was impressed at least six times is suggested by the fact that it was printed on six or more discrete papers, thus implying that it was either kept standing or plated. That it was indeed plated at some stage of its life, and that the plates consisted of columns (not pages), is confirmed by the observable differences in alignment of the columns from exemplar to exemplar, particular alignments agreeing with particular papers. Athias's primacy in the history of stereotyping is thus established. From among the many librarians who have assisted me during this investigation I should like to thank in particular Dr Lotte Hellinga, whose advice in the early stages proved especially helpful. Abstract:
In 1954, McGregor described two species of phytoseiids from lemon, in California, USA: Typhlodromus californicus McGregor and T. mungeri McGregor, the former represented by one male, and the latter by two females. Since its description, T. mungeri was synonymised under T. californicus, and the name T. (now Neoseiulus) californicus has been used extensively to represent a species that is now commonly used as a biocontrol agent of crop pests worldwide. However, the true identity of the biocontrol agent is uncertain because the original descriptions of T. californicus and T. mungeri were not adequate enough to allow an irrefutable identification, with each description being based on specimens of a single sex. An examination of the types of N. californicus and N. mungeri revealed that they are morphologically identical to the male and female of N. barkeri Hughes, 1948, respectively, and that they are in fact junior synonyms of N. barkeri—and are therefore distinct from the biocontrol agent globally called N. californicus (sensu Athias-Henriot, 1977; see Griffiths, 2015). This is further supported by a comparison with male and female syntypes of N. barkeri, as well as other specimens of N. barkeri including some collected from the type host in the vicinity of the type location (i.e. lemon in southern California, 1952–1958). We redescribe the male and female of both N. barkeri and N. californicus sensu Athias-Henriot (1977), based on representative specimens from at least 14 and 19 populations, respectively. Based on examination of types, we confirm the synonymy of N. mckenziei (Schuster & Pritchard, 1963), N. picketti (Specht, 1968), and N. oahuensis (Prasad, 1968) with N. barkeri, and that the names N. chilenensis (Dosse, 1958b) and N. wearnei (Schicha, 1987) represent the same species as N. californicus sensu Athias-Henriot (1977). We also provide a hypothesis as to why Chant (1959) had erroneously synonymised T. californicus and T. mungeri under T. marinus (Willmann). Finally, we suggest maintaining the prevailing usage of the name N. californicus (McGregor) for the species concept of Athias-Henriot (1977) as followed by subsequent authors, through submission of a separate application to the International Commission of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN). In the meantime, the current meaning of N. californicus should be maintained until a ruling by the ICZN is made on the application.

Abstract:
The left-wing that includes the nationalist, communist, and Ba&#39;athist parties arose in Jordan with the beginning of the kingdom&#39;s independence. Its role in opposing the regime doubled after the unity of the two banks and the integration of the Jordanian left-wing with the Palestinian left-wing, participated with other right and middle currents in all stages of participation in parliamentary and pluralistic elections and the formation of the first pluralist democratic government in 1956, which lasted for less than one year and was the reason for its termination after the relationship with the government system worsened. This trend resorted to clandestine work after the dissolution of the government and the parties until 1989, the regime&#39;s transition to democratic pluralism, where it participated in multi-party elections with other party currents, calling for the promotion of the values of pluralism, political participation, and the transfer of power. However, it lacked its application in its internal system.

Abstract:
AbstractThe greenhouse cucumber pests, Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), Frankliniella occidentalis (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), and Tetranychus urticae (Acari: Tetranychidae), are major threats to the production of greenhouse cucumbers (Cucurbitaceae) in Lebanon. The development of insecticide resistance by these pests has prompted the use of alternative and sustainable pest management strategies. In this study, we used integrated pest management strategies, including the release of the biological control agents, Amblyseius swirskii Athias-Henriot (Mesostigmata: Phytoseiidae) and Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot (Mesostigmata: Phytoseiidae), to control whitefly, thrips, and two-spotted spider mite populations on greenhouse cucumber plants in two commercial production sites (sites A and B). We also compared the efficacy of pest population suppression using the integrated pest management strategy with that of chemical pest control. Our results show that biological control effectively maintains the cucumber pest populations below the economic threshold when coupled with additional integrated pest management measures. In addition, we show that biological control agents were equally or more effective in pest population suppression compared to eight and 12 insecticidal and acaricidal sprays performed in the control greenhouses at sites A and B, respectively. Altogether, our results show the efficacy of adopting integrated pest management and biological control for pest population suppression in greenhouse cucumber production under Mediterranean environmental conditions.

Abstract:
To evaluate the effectiveness of eco-friendly treatments based on detergents classified as non-hazardous and black soap on the pest Tetranychus urticae Koch 1836, and their predators (Euseius stipulatus Athias-Henriot, 1960, Typhlodromus sp., Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot, 1957), different treatments were applied to citrus orchards planted with Valencia late (Orange) in the Mechraa Belksiri region of Morocco (T0 = control experiment; T1 = spirodiclofen 0.5 L/Ha; T2 = 125 L/Ha (5%) of black soap; T3 = detergent; 4 L/Ha of Oni product + 2 L/Ha of Tide product). The results obtained during the whole monitoring period indicated that the three treatments used, namely spirodiclofen, black soap, and detergents, ensured a reduction in the rate of population of the pest T. urticae compared to the untreated plot. In the untreated plot, the average was 45.01 A± 4.90 mobile forms, while the plot treated with spirodiclofen it was only 21.10 C ± 2.71, the black soap 31.49 B ± 3.35, and in the plot treated with detergents, the average was similar to that obtained by spirodiclofen (22.90 C ± 2.18). On the predators (E. stipulatus, P. persimilis, and Typhlodropmus sp.), the black soap and the treatment with detergents were less harmful compared to the chemical spirodiclofen.

Abstract:
In strawberry production, western flower thrips (WFT) and two-spotted spider mites (TSSM) inflict feeding damage and reduce the yield. Biological control for these pests often includes phytoseiid predatory mites and entomopathogenic fungi. The hemipteran family Nabidae have been reported as prominent predators in open-field strawberry. Nabis americoferus Carayon is a new biocontrol agent developed in Canada. This study examined if this species was a good candidate for integration with biological control for greenhouse strawberry production. The laboratory trials showed that Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot and Amblyseius swirskii Athias-Henriot were compatible with N. americoferus, especially when alternative food was available. In contrast, the nabid was not compatible with the Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) GHA strain. A greenhouse cage study was conducted to determine if it was beneficial to add N. americoferus to the phytoseiid-mites-based biological control program for WFT and TSSM in greenhouse strawberry. The release of N. americoferus on a banker plant together with the placement of sachets of Neoseiulus cucumeris (Oudemans) and Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) was beneficial, not only potentially reducing the number of sachet applications, but also providing better pest control than phytoseiid mites alone. Neither the phytoseiids nor the N. americoferus numbers were significantly affected by the presence of each other.

Full text
Abstract:
The revised tiliarum species group in the genus Typhlodromus Scheuten is defined by the presence of setae Z1, S2, S4, and S5 as well as J2, J5, Z4, and Z5 on the opisthoscutum, excluding sublateral seta R1 which may or may not be inserted on the opisthoscutum. The chaetotaxy on the opisthoscutum of the revised tiliarum group is identical with that of the australicus (in part) and simplex groups. However, the tiliarum group is distinguished from the former by the absence of seta z6 on the podoscutum and from the latter by differences in the nature of the peritreme and of the setae on the dorsal shield and by the shape of the ventrianal shield. The original tiliarum group included only 3 species whereas the revised group comprises 26 species, including one new species: T. comptus Corpuz, Typhlodromus crassipilis (Athias-Henriot and Fauvel) comb, nov., T. aceri Collyer, T. tuberculatus Wainstein, Typhlodromus runiacus (Kolodochka) comb, nov., T. transitans Gupta, T. tiliarum Oudemans, T. perforatus Athias-Henriot, Typhlodromus carmeli (Rivnay and Swirski) comb, nov., Typhlodromus montforti (Rivnay and Swirski) comb. nov., T. elisae Schicha and McMurtry, T. spaini Collyer, T. cassiniae Collyer, T. steveni Schicha, T. myopori Collyer, T. steeli Schicha and McMurtry, T. cottieri Collyer, T. dachanti Collyer, T. novaezealandiae Collyer, T. manukae Collyer, T. glenfieldensis Schicha, T. oleariae Collyer, T. corrugatus Schicha, Typhlodromus ashleyae sp.nov., T. armidalensis Schicha and Elshafie, and T. nesbitti Womersley. Heteroseiulus aceris Lehman is synonymized with T. aceri, Typhloctonus prunus Denmark and Rather with T. transitans, and Seiulus sexapori Karg and Edland with T. tuberculatus. Shiehia multispinosa Tseng and Typhloctonus vollsella Chaudhri are proposed provisionally as junior synonyms of T. comptus and T. transitans, respectively. Four genera, Neoseiulella Muma, Typhloctonus Muma, Pegodromus Athias-Henriot and Fauvel, and Heteroseiulus Lehman are designated as new junior synonyms of the genus Typhlodromus and one genus, Shiehia Tseng, as a provisional junior synonym. Most species in this group are recorded from temperate climates; 16 of the 26 recorded species are limited to the Australian faunal region. Various generic concepts relating to the species in the tiliarum group are reviewed and the general characters of the group are described.
