Abstract:
Measuring the use of research evidence (URE) by schools has become a central focus of education researchers. However, it has proven challenging due to low response rates, social desirability bias, and costly or time-consuming data collection methods. To overcome these challenges and meet the needs of research focused on URE, this paper introduces a non-reactive archival measure: Archival Search of Use of Research Evidence (ASURE). ASURE counts references to research or evidence on a school's or school district's website to capture the extent of its rhetorical use of research evidence. After illustrating the collection of ASURE in all public school districts in Michigan (N = 595), we use data on these districts to show that ASURE is reliable and valid, and thus offers a promising new strategy for measuring URE in schools. We conclude by considering future steps for exploring ASURE, not simply as a measure of URE in schools, but instead as a measurement strategy for assessing URE in a broad range of organisational contexts.

Abstract:
104 Background: Prostate cancer is the most prevalent non-cutaneous cancer among North American men. Approximately 50% of these are favorable risk cancers; the NCCN guideline recommends active surveillance for these patients. Patients are generally followed by serial PSAs, DREs and/or TRUS-guided biopsies with triggers identified for each test. Consequently, about 30% of these cancers will be reclassified to a higher risk and require definitive treatment. Cases treated with radical prostatectomy (rP) give important insights into the biology of these cancers. Methods: The ASURE database of active surveillance patients was used to identify cases; a retrospective chart review was completed. The following variables were extracted: primary reason for rP; % biochemical failure; % of patients requiring salvage radiation or hormone therapy; Gleason score (GS), tumor size staging and nodal status in the rP specimen; cause and rate of mortality; proportion of patients treated for PSA-doubling times less then 3 years presenting with a GS greater than 7. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the results. Results: Of 566 patients in the ASURE database, the charts of 26 patients having an rP were extracted. The primary cause for an rP was a PSA-doubling times less than 3 years (57% of patients) followed by a biopsy indicating a GS of 4+3 or greater (19%). 7% of patients (2/26) were not reclassified but preferred to be treated with rP. 4 patients had biochemical failure (15%) all 4 had salvage therapy. There was 1 cause-specific death. 85% of rP specimens had GS 7, while the remaining had GS 6. Half of these GS 7 individuals had PSA doubling times of less than 3 years. Conclusions: Radical prostatectomy appears to be an effective deferred treatment for patients who are reclassified on active surveillance as evidenced by low prostate-cancer mortality, low rates of biochemical failure acceptable use of salvage therapy. Of interest is that the majority patients with PSAdt < 3 y have Gleason 7 disease on specimen. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Wildi-Yune, Jeanny. "Does accreditation assure quality?" Thesis, University of Leicester, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/9583.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis delves into the question of whether accreditation can assure quality. To answer this, an accreditation scenario of a private international higher education institution is studied in depth. There are four principal objectives to the research question which are: 1. To investigate how quality is conceptualised by various stakeholders 2. To assess the effectiveness of accreditation standards 3. To examine whether the accreditation process is valid, reliable and relevant, and 4. To evaluate if the accreditation agency enacts what it purports to do. Based on current theories and approaches to quality and quality assurance, certain elements are highlighted in the research process such as the use of quality standards, issues of accountability and continuous improvement, and the culture and context surrounding an accreditation event. The methodology used is one of participant observation applied to a case study. The occasion of the decennial reaccreditation of a for-profit Swiss school by an American accreditation agency serves as the field of research. Data were collected firsthand from the various constituents engaged in this reaccreditation. Fundamentally, the process comprised of self-evaluation and an on-site peer review, so there is focused discussion on these two critical audit methods and their interrelationship. The field notes are supplemented by longitudinal data representing the last twelve years of involvement in accreditation of the case study school including two other quality assurance approaches, one Swiss and the other, ISO. After a review of the various school activities which come under the remit of the agency, the accreditation procedures are examined for validity, reliability and relevance. An analytic induction of the findings confirms that accreditation does indeed assure baseline quality, albeit its current orientation towards publicly funded establishments. Thus accreditation of for-profit schools represents an imminent domain of future research.

O'Rourke, Eileen. "Changing identities, changing landscapes : the long term dynamics of human-land relations in the Aspre, Roussillon." Thesis, Cranfield University, 1995. http://dspace.lib.cranfield.ac.uk/handle/1826/4792.

Full text
Abstract:
This research seeks to explore the complexity of human - land relations in the Aspre, with respect to land degradation. It is argued that in human modified environments, such as this Mediterranean - Pyrenean borderland, nature and culture cannot be meaningfully studied apart. Consequently issues of land degradation must be situated within the broader context of socio-natural interaction. Such a study cannot be approached solely from a natural or social science perspective; what is required, and what has been developed in this research, is a transdisciplinary methodology whereby natural phenomena are situated within their historical and socio-cultural context. Central to that context is the need to position the system within a long term evolutionary dynamic, thus allowing us to view the system in process, rather than as a synchronic present day snapshot. Within this 'longue duree' temporal and spatial scales are seen to be critical. It is argued that land degradation is at root a perceptual issue, thus perception and cognition are seen as critically important in this study. The core field work acts to expose both the physical and social identities of the Aspre, and the multiple perceptions of land degradation held by its inhabitants. The research identifies a series of 'perceptual filters' through which the environment of the Aspre is experienced, and by means of which meaning is negotiated. The recognition of the multiple environmental perceptions and plural rationalities is of crucial importance when contemplating the possible future pathways open to the Aspre, with respect to sustainable futures. What emerges from this research is a redefinition of land degradation in the Aspre, from that of a purely physical issue, to the realization that what we are dealing with are changing social identities within changing landscapes.

Abstract:
Kenya confirmed its first case of COVID-19 on 12 March 2020. Since then, the government has been providing daily updates on the number of new COVID-19 infections, recoveries and deaths in the country, as well as implementing several interventions to manage the disease. The cumulative numbers as of 12 August 2020 were 27,425 new infections, 13,867 recoveries and 438 deaths, and rising. The objective of this assessment was to understand the effects of COVID-19 on the food system and the sub-set of the population largely dependent on agriculture. The findings were intended to inform actions to assure protection of rural livelihoods and the continued supply of adequate and affordable food of acceptable quality to the population.

Abstract:
Since 12 March 2020, when Kenya reported the first COVID-19 cases, the Ministry of Health confirmed a total of 45,076 cases and 839 deaths, as of 19 October.1 Despite the rising number of COVID-19 confirmed infections and deaths in Kenya during the third quarter (Q3) of 2020, the national and county governments relaxed some of the restrictions that had been in place during Q2 aimed at controlling the spread of COVID-19. This assessment was aimed at understanding the effects of COVID-19 at household level and attendant policy responses during Q3 of 2020, to inform actions to assure protection of local food systems, rural livelihoods and the supply of adequate, affordable food of acceptable quality to the population.

Abstract:
Recent loosening of legal restrictions on cannabis and its chemical constituents, including phytocannabinoids such as Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), has led to rapid proliferation and wide availability of products containing CBD. Although using pure CBD does not result in THC-like intoxication, it is not risk-free. In this review, we examine CBD from scientific, marketing, and regulatory perspectives. Specifically, we evaluate the evidence used to support statements concerning CBD’s real and putative medical effects and discuss misleading information that has been used in marketing approaches. Also, we explore the current legal landscape surrounding CBD. We conclude that further research is necessary to clarify legitimate therapeutic effects of CBD. Federal regulation is also necessary to assure quality, safety, and efficacy of CBD products. Until new regulations are enacted to ensure purity and label accuracy, consumers should balance any perceived benefits of CBD use against potential risks associated with using products of unknown quality.

Abstract:
Kenya confirmed its first case of COVID-19 on 12 March 2020. Like many governments across the world, the Kenyan government implemented various measures aimed at slowing down local spread of the virus and cushioning the population against the negative economic effects of the pandemic and the associated policy restrictions. International organisations and researchers postulated that the measures would negatively affect economic activities and livelihoods, with undesirable implications for poverty and food insecurity. Particularly vulnerable would be populations in developing countries such as Kenya, where many people depend on food systems for their livelihoods, and the majority of those are smallholder farmers who often have low economic power. The objective of this rapid assessment was to investigate the impact of COVID-19 on the food system and the sub-set of the population largely dependent on agriculture in Kenya to inform actions that can assure protection of rural livelihoods and continued access to adequate and affordable food of acceptable quality to the population. This report presents results of that rapid assessment.
