Abstract:
Today Namibia is at the crossroads of its independence. The agony of death and destruction that the Namibians have endured for the past 105 years of colonial oppression is about to come to an end and freedom is in sight. The process of transition to independence has already started. On 1 November 1989, the Namibian people will exercise their long-denied right to self-determination by electing their own leaders who. by virtue of being elected by the masses will have the sovereign right to draft the constitution of independent Namibia. This will bring about a new political and socio-economic order. The task before the Namibian people is to seize this historic opportunity and ensure that they join hands to safeguard the revolutionary gains we have made in bringing our country to the threshold of independence. Seizing this opportunity means, first, to register as a voter, and second, to vote and send to the Constituent Assembly men. and women with a revolutionary will, honourable record, vision for a better future, integrity, experience and proven ability to fight for the interests of the broad masses of the Namibian people. Such men and women are to be found in SWAPO. SWAPO has stood tall in the face of formidable odds over the last twenty-nine years of its struggle to free Namibia. Because of this fact. SWAPO had participated in the formulation of Resolution 435 and fought bravely for the last 11 years for its implementation. The motivating force behind this struggle has always been to guarantee that power is given to the Namibian people to decide the future of our country' through free and fair elections. Now that Resolution 435 is being implemented, the Central Committee of SWAPO has the honour to place before the people of Namibia its concrete programme of action in the form of SWAPO’s policy positions on a broad spectrum of political, economic, social and cultural issues. Together, these policy'positions form SWAPO's Election Manifesto.

Trudel, Guy Alan. "An edition with commentary of the Speculum huius vite, a fifteenth-century pastoral manual in English." Thesis, University of Oxford, 1999. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:4399e35a-e138-4622-9d45-3f9862633706.

Full text
Abstract:
The Speculum huius vite is a pastoral manual composed in English around the end of the fourteenth century. It is, on one level, an abbreviated version of the Prick of Conscience, arguably one of the most popular English texts of the late middle ages; but the Speculum is more than simply an abbreviation of a popular text, since it refashions its source to accommodate a new emphasis and new material, including a commentary on the ten commandments and some shorter exhortations to the clergy and laity regarding humility and modesty. Evidence from the two manuscripts of the Speculum (Bodleian MS Additional A. 268, fols. 117r-139r, and Dublin Trinity Coll. MS 155, pp. 149-238) and from two related manuscripts of the Prick of Conscience (Cambridge University Library MS Dd.12.69, fols. 37r-97v and Cambridge, Mass., Harvard University Library MS 155, fols. 1-77) indicates that two revisions were involved in the production of the Speculum from the Prick of Conscience. The dialect of the poem has been extensively studied to determine whether it is possible to make any conjectures concerning the geographical source of the first and second revisions of the text. The text was probably used for catechetical instruction, private reading, and preaching within the tradition of English catechetical manuals produced after the Fourth Lateran Council. The thesis provides a description of the manuscripts of the text (Chapter One), discussions of the historical context of the poem (Chapter Two), the sources and immediate context of the poem (Chapter Three), the relationship of the manuscripts (Chapter Four), and the language and dialect of the text (Chapter Five). These are followed by notes on editorial procedure, an edition of the text, a glossary, notes to the text, and a bibliography.

Whitted, Roger K. "Introductory handbook for College of Architecture lighting system." Virtual Press, 1985. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/426080.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this handbook is twofold. First, it is to be used as a guide for maintenance personnel when they have to deal with the lighting system. Whi 1 e the 1 i ghti ng 1 oads are typical of those in any large building, the control functions and equipment operation require some specific information for proper performance. Second, it can be used by the person in charge of scheduling to gain a greater understanding of how the system works. Although a detailed understanding isn't necessary, it is helpful to know what is out there and why it does what it is supposed to do.The reason for the development of this handbook is that with all of the literature produced by the manufacturer there was no single source, or starting point, that explained the whole package. There is a great deal of information in each of the various publications and with this handbook one should easily be able to utilize it. In order to use this book most effectively one should have the manufacturer's documents on hand for reference as they are referred to frequently. In addition the flow charts enhance one's ability "to know where you are” when using the terminal for data entry.

Abstract:
In 1991, the NCAA created Challenging Athletes Minds for Personal Success (CHAMPS)/Life Skills (NCAA, 2005). The CHAMPS/Life Skills program concentrates on five areas: Academic Commitment, Athletic Commitment, Personal Development Commitment, Career Development Commitment, and Service Commitment (NCAA, 2005). Very few amendments and modifications have been made to the CHAMPS/Life Skills educational material since the program was developed. In the present creative thesis project, revisions and updates were implemented to the current material to satisfy the needs of collegiate student-athletes. Hence, the purpose of this creative thesis project was to update the Academic Commitment module within the CHAMPS/Life Skills manual. Specifically, the Time Management and Study Skills components were revised. These revisions were evaluated by three university professors. In conclusion, the present creative thesis project will assist in presenting CHAMPS/Life Skills material to student-athletes.

Young, Nancy E. "Guiding the 21st century foreign student advisor : a compendium to the Handbook of Foreign Student Advising." Scholarly Commons, 2009. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/uop_etds/720.

Full text
Abstract:
The field of Foreign Student Advising has undergone significant change over the last 25 years, outpacing the seminal guidance in the field provided in The Handbook of Foreign Student Advising by Gary Althen, first published in 1983 and revised in 1995. Foreign Student Advisors (FSAs) are professionals employed at institutions of higher education or nonprofit organizations, who work with nonimmigrant students (primarily those in F and J nonimmigrant status). Their essential function is to ensure the student's legal status and help promote adaptation to and academic success in the U.S. The field of Foreign Student Advising is inherently complex and intercultural, more so today due to the ever-present and increasing federal government parameters following 9/11/01. This thesis addresses these changes by providing a compendium to supplement The Handbook. The steps taken prior to writing the compendium include: consultation with Althen, a critical analysis of what does and does not work in The Handbook for today's FSA. a survey of a select group of international education leaders to determine what topics should be included in the compendium, and a review of the literature and research about FSAs with a focus on what has been written since 1995. In order to secure the most meaningful feedback on the major developments in the field, a survey was conducted with fifteen past presidents of NAFSA: Association of International Educators, who had a Foreign Student Advising background and were still active in the field. This information, in combination with the current literature from the field, reflections from my twenty-plus years of FSA experience, and guidance from Althen was used to prepare a compendium to The Handbook. The Compendium provides updated guidance, addressing some of the major changes in the field of Foreign Student Advising.

Botha, Adele. "An intervention for enhancing the mathematics teaching practices of grade four teachers in the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan area." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1008176.

Full text
Abstract:
Mathematics is regarded as a driving force in economies worldwide. The performance of South African learners in mathematics over the past decade has highlighted that problems are being experienced across all grades. This situation needs to be addressed with urgency. The South African Department of Education stated that quality learning must be the objective for all grades. The implementation of good teaching practices plays a crucial role in improving the quality of education and in guiding learners towards quality learning. To achieve quality mathematics teaching and learning it is imperative to determine what good mathematics teaching practices are. The identification of good mathematic teaching practices will provide a yard stick to measure the mathematics teaching competency of teachers. This study identifies a set of good mathematics teaching practice indicators and evidences applicable to teachers in the Intermediate phase as a first contribution. These indicators and evidences frame the second research contribution: an assessment instrument entitled “A Classroom Observation Tool for Observing Mathematics Teaching Practices in Primary Schools”. As a third research contribution a generic profile of a Grade four mathematics teacher has been built. This generic profile has been built through an analysis of data gathered by means of self-assessment questionnaires completed by the research sample, as well as through applying the observation tool. The value of the generic profile lies in the identification of shared strengths and shared improvement opportunities in the mathematics teaching practice of the sample and as such, it forms the basis of a theory on Grade four mathematics teaching practice. The fourth research contribution is the design and application of an intervention that addresses the shared improvement opportunities. The research study concludes by comparing pre-intervention classroom observation data with post-intervention classroom observation data and reporting on the impact of the intervention.

Abstract:
User system interface guidelines are emerging as a tool for user interface design. However, guidelines are relatively new, and the effectiveness of guidelines in their present form is still being debated. Some designers of USI tools are attempting to place guidelines online in browsing systems, often as a part of automated USI design tools. This thesis studies the role levels of abstraction has on the detection of USI guidelines violations in user interface evaluation. Studies of online guidance systems, such as help manuals, have yielded mixed results in comparing performance when using online systems versus hardcopy manuals. This thesis also explores the effect which guideline presentation media has upon guidelines usage.

Abstract:
Thesis (MNutr)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Objective To develop and test a marketable, Continuing Professional Development (CPD) accredited training manual focused on the role of medical nutrition therapy (MNT) for healthcare professionals (HCP) of the multidisciplinary Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM) management team. Methods The study consisted of two components: (a) development of the MNT manual and (b) testing of the MNT manual. The development of the MNT manual consisted of seven steps: (1) needs assessment and problem definition; (2) literature search; (3) draft one of the MNT manual; (4) peer review; (5) draft two of the MNT manual; (6) evaluation by means of a survey; and (7) the final MNT manual. The testing of the MNT manual’s impact on knowledge had a test-retest design which consisted of seven steps: (1) DM knowledge questionnaire development; (2) participant recruitment; (3) questionnaire pilot; (4) initial knowledge testing; (5) self-study of MNT manual; (6) retesting of knowledge; (7) statistical analysis. Results From the literature a total of 132 published documents were selected for inclusion in the MNT manual after grading of the information. The first draft was compiled and sent for peer review and language editing. Recommended changes were made and the second draft was developed and sent to 79 registered dietitians (RDs) who volunteered to complete a survey after reading the MNT manual. The survey indicated that the majority were satisfied with the content, which in turn led to the final MNT manual. The questionnaire was compiled using the content of the MNT manual and creating 10 questions per section of the manual. The pilot was conducted using 10% (n = 7) of the total sample. Minor changes were made. For knowledge testing, participants included RDs between the ages of 23 and 60 years, registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. A test-retest design was used. Participants scored a mean of 57.5% on the initial knowledge questionnaire (KQ1), ranging between 33.6% and 79.8%. They lacked knowledge on: management of the hospitalised patient; diabetes and exercise; diabetes and religion; gestational diabetes; supplements commonly used by diabetics; diabetes in prisons; diabetes in children; the function, side-effects and contra-indications of metformin. The mean score on the second knowledge questionnaire (KQ2) increased to 90.5%, with the lowest score 50.4% and the highest 99.2%.There were two questions where participants scored < 50% (mean of n = 79) which related to the type of insulin regime most suitable during Ramadan and risk factors for Type 2 DM in children. Data were also analyzed according to various socio-demographic variables, but only one significant difference was found between groups. Conclusions and implications There is adequate research available to develop a comprehensive guide for HCP on the nutritional management of DM. Such an MNT manual should be marketed for CPD purposes to encourage HCP to improve their DM management skills, as seen by the dramatic improvement in DM management knowledge of the RDs participating in this research. Future studies may include knowledge testing of other HCP, as well as testing to determine if the newly acquired information is put into practice to the benefit of DM patients.

Abstract:
"Fire investigative methodologies were researched and analyzed resulting in the development of an organizational tool to be used for conducting fire investigations. The tool, or field-guide, was designed to aid the investigator in processing structural fire scenes. The tool accomplishes this by providing, 1) thirteen forms for properly documenting the scene, 2) flowcharts which can enhance the investigators intuition for the fire’s growth rate and spread, and 3) basic engineering correlations which can be used to help validate hypotheses the investigator may develop. By employing these methods, the field-guide can be effectively used to lead an investigator through the entire investigation process - from data collection, to the formulation of hypotheses, and ultimately, to quantitative validation."

Abstract:
School districts face tremendous budget challenges and, as a result, professional development has been "trimmed" from many school budgets. (Habegger & Hodanbosi, 2011). School administrators responsible for planning professional development face a daunting task and often focus on PowerPoints, district mandated training, one-shot presentations, and workshops that are delivered by expensive experts. These types of activities lack teacher collaboration, time for sharing of ideas and opportunity for reflection and analysis (Torff & Byrnes, 2011, Coggins, Zuckerman & Mckelvey, 2010). The problem addressed in this study is that teacher professional development is usually planned by school administrators who are provided little support or training. This study used the problem-based learning approach designed by Bridges and Hallinger (1995) to determine the usefulness of a handbook for principals to utilize as they plan professional development. The handbook was developed, field tested and revised using Borg and Gall's (2003) research and development cycle. This qualitative study included surveys, observations, interviews and workshops to determine the usefulness of the handbook. The study consisted of preliminary field testing and product revision followed by the main field testing. The main field test was a workshop for K-12 school and district level administrators on how to use the handbook in planning meaningful, ongoing teacher professional development. The data collected in this study determined that the handbook,Teachers Teaching Teachers: Designing Successful Teacher Professional Development on a Shoestring Budget, is a useful tool for school administrators responsible for planning teacher professional development.

McLaren, Lorian. "Assessment strategy framework for the National Diploma : fashion course at one Eastern Cape Comprehensive University." Thesis, University of Fort Hare, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10353/4904.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the study was born out of a perceived need to establish an assessment strategy framework for the fashion programme of one Eastern Cape comprehensive university. The study focused on one Eastern Cape comprehensive university. The programme, National Diploma: Fashion, is offered by the university at two campuses (120km apart). Although this programme is currently offered at both of the sites under the auspices of the university, disparity exists in many of the academic functions within the programme. The most challenging is assessment and the implications of a non-existent standard framework for assessment across both campuses. This research undertook to identify a framework that would best serve the Fashion programme of the researched university. Assessment in the context of this study referred to the process of both gathering evidence of student learning as well as assigning grades to that learning. The lack of an assessment framework affects the quality of assessment. Consistency in the assessment process across both campuses is important. At present assessment is not consistent as it is done independently on each campus. This lack of consistency could prove to favour students at the one campus while marginalizing students at the other campus and vice versa. Inconsistency arises from staff having no common assessment framework to refer to when assessment takes place. This study was a case study. Interviews were conducted with a sample of lecturers and students from both sites. A document analysis of relevant policies was done. The documents included the Higher Education Quality Committee document Criteria for Programme Accreditation, 2004, the South African Qualification Authority document Criteria and Guidelines for Assessment of NQF Registered Unit Standards and Qualifications, 2001, and the South African Qualification Authority document Guidelines for Integrated Assessment, 2005. University policy documents pertaining to assessment were also included in the research. The findings of this study lead to the conclusion that there is no clear assessment framework currently in place for the National Diploma: Fashion at one Eastern Cape comprehensive university. The assessment methods currently in use are not fully understood and comprehended by lecturers or students. The assessment types are limited with little or no variety as to how assessment is practiced. Although continuous assessment is advocated in the department, a lack of understanding by lecturers and students as to the true practice of continuous assessment is evident. Much of the assessment is done at the end of a teaching module, rather than embedded in the teaching module. This means that assessment is done of learning rather than for learning.

Carr, Patricia I. "Development of an Audiological Test Procedure Manual for First Year Au.D. Students." Scholar Commons, 2001. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/1535.

Full text
Abstract:
A student manual of audiological procedures with accompanying laboratory assignments does not presently exist at the University of South Florida (USF). In the first year of the four year Au.D. program at USF, students are enrolled in Audiology Laboratory Clinic I, II, and III, in consecutive semesters. Groups of four to six students meet weekly for a 3-1/2 hour clinical laboratory session to receive training in test instruction, test procedures, test application, and test interpretation. The purpose of the first year Audiology laboratory clinic sessions is to prepare the student for clinical experience in year two of the Au.D program at USF. In preparation for these laboratory sessions, it was discovered that materials related to test procedures are currently scattered throughout a variety of texts, journals, manuals, educational software, videos, and web sites. No one source contains all the needed information on any given test procedure. In addition, specific procedures outlined in documents [American Standards Institute (ANSI) and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)] are not consistently used by the different sources. Thus, there is no standard procedural manual containing laboratory assignments that lead to the development of appropriate clinical testing skills by a first year Au.D student. A standard test procedural manual for pure tone audiometry, speech audiometry, and immittance testing, with assignments, was developed to assist in the cultivation of the students testing skills. The manual contains test history, purposes, procedures, scoring guidelines, interpretations, and limitations for each test. Laboratory assignments include practice exercises using a computer simulator, classmates, and volunteers. Each assignment is accompanied by discussion questions to enhance and augment student understanding. A reference list is available to obtain further information on each topic area. This manual will be made available to the first year Au.D student as well as to the advanced Au.D student who would benefit from an all-inclusive, updateable source providing the best possible clinical procedures. The final product will be available for a fee in a notebook type format to allow for the inclusion of additional topics and updates as the standards of practice in Audiology change.

Abstract:
Buildings of the modern period have traditionally been absent from most architectural surveys. Part of the reason for this lies in the fact that very few guides have attempted to provide meaningful and accurate terms for post-World War II buildings, leaving surveyors without any meaningful way to categorize such structures. The purpose of this creative project, then, is to provide an accurate and meaningful means of applying style and building form categories to post-1941 architectural resources. The creative project first examines major trends in the movement to preserve and, more specifically, to document recent past resources throughout the United States. Primary and secondary sources, both popular and professional, are examined to determine the most common and appropriate labels being applied to modern architectural resources. From this, an illustrated style guide for identifying modern Indiana architecture is created. The creative project then provides a statewide survey of post-1941 architectural resources with both photographic and written documentation as an illustration of how to apply the determined styles and forms.

Continuing education advances society. For every student, our educational system should provide a seamless transition from one level to the next until a degree or certificate is earned that reflects a mastery of skills needed to secure employment. This helps prepare each individual for a successful life after exiting the educational system and greatly benefit our society. Today, however, many students graduating from high schools are not ready for a postsecondary education. Transitioning students from high school to college is a complex process that requires many different approaches. Students making this transition are finding it more difficult to enter and succeed at a higher level of education because of the complexity of this process. Preparing students for postsecondary options is critical for every student. Students from low-income families and some ethnic and racial minority groups are most dependent on the ability of their high school to prepare them properly for college success (Conley, 2010). In what ways can schools better prepare students for postsecondary success? This study focuses on the creation of a Postsecondary Readiness Guidebook (PRG) which provides a comprehensive approach to help educational leaders prepare students for postsecondary success. The guidebook uses a problem-based learning design and follows the research and development process. The guidebook was field tested by educational leaders in a K-12 public school though a workshop using a qualitative methodology. During the field-testing of the guidebook, data were collected through assessments, interviews with educators, and questionnaires completed by educational leaders at the school. Data were analyzed using inductive coding, facesheet coding, enumeration, and typology. The findings of the study reveal that using a guidebook with a comprehensive approach to postsecondary preparedness can help school leaders prepare students for postsecondary success. Educational leaders in the school collectively focused on best practices and programs aimed at preparing students for postsecondary options through the use and interaction of the PRG. The guidebook gave them a compass for which to navigate the complex process of preparing students for postsecondary success.

Abstract:
As budget belts tighten in the public schools today, more and more schools are moving toward participation in federal Schoolwide Title I Programs to most effectively meet the needs of struggling students. This study seeks to inform school administrators how best to approach this yearlong change initiative by both meeting the needs of the rigorous federal standards and facilitating a positive school climate for staff, students, and community. Using a Problem-Based Learning method, the purpose of this study was to research, develop, and validate a handbook for shaping school culture during a major school change project while creating or maintaining a positive school culture. The handbook was developed as a resource for principals, and will ultimately be disseminated to Oregon school leaders with the goal of improving the transition process from a Targeted-Assistance Program (TAP) to a Schoolwide Title I Program (SWP). Research and development (R&D) methodology (Borg & Gall, 1989) was used to develop and validate Moving to a Schoolwide Title I Program: The Path Principals Should Follow to Maintain a Healthy School Culture. The literature review and the researcher's experience in Title I schools provided the necessary information to build the preliminary product (prototype). Field-test reviewers used an evaluation rubric to measure efficacy, practicality, effectiveness, and impact on school climate for each section of the handbook. The handbook was reviewed by three groups: principals of Title I schools, Title I directors and coordinators, and Title I compliance officials. The handbook was then piloted by the principal of an elementary school that is currently making the transition from a TAP to a SWP. Changes in the school's curriculum and innovations in the classroom, even if they are beneficial to student learning, can be challenging to the health of the school culture. Research suggests that school culture is defined by rituals, expectations, relationships, curricular focus, co-curricular activities, decision-making processes, school requirements, and a sense of the "way we do things here" (Bower, 1966, p. 22). School culture directly impacts a school's social, emotional, and academic end results. Through conversations with educators across the state, it is evident that the transition is not always sustainable or fully implemented by all staff, and many times the efforts for change are overcome by resistance, and the momentum toward change is abandoned. The handbook promotes the idea that though collaboration, shared leadership, data driven instruction, and staff buy-in, the yearlong transition process is not only possible, but it can also positively impact a variety of aspects which make up the school culture in hopes of creating a sustainable change.

Abstract: Engineering is seen today as a synonym of Innovation, in special for providing technological solutions that affect not only daily work and entertainment, but education as well. Project portfolio management of multimedia production and use emerges today as a challenge both for the enrichment of traditional classroom based teaching and for distance education offering. In this way, this thesis intends to answer the following question: "Which are the fundamental aspects to be considered in the management of projects on educational multimedia production and use?" A possible solution for the central question mentioned above is expressed by the following proposition: "A scientifically studied set of management tools and techniques may be identified as a central element to be considered in the management of projects of multimedia production and/or use, in this way increasing the success odds of educational projects." As a consequence, this research presents a proposal of a project management model for digital content production and use. The model, the methodology and the implementation will be named EduPMO, an abbreviation of "Educational Project Management Office". Therefore, the model, the methodology and the implementation should be understood as related but independent entities.

Abstract: The present work purpose is at the appropriation, on the discursive, that educators have made Sao Paulo's intuitive method and enables them to claim for an active participation and policy on the state system of education that had been organized from the initiation of the republican regime. As for research purposes was imposed problematize the process by which a certain "reading" of the intuitive method allowed the teachers working as teachers in state public, especially those who expressed themselves through the pages of Revista da Educação, an agency of the Benevolent Association of State Public Professorship Sao Paulo, develop a pedagogical rationality which aimed at enhancement of education and class teacher. Within the educational strategies for enhancement of the educational field, we observed the process in which the pedagogy of São Paulo, gradually, disengaging from its character as an "art of teaching" in an attempt to establish itself as a science education. In this context, the transformations in the definition of comprehensive education crovided valuable insights into the originality of ownership regarded teacher in São Paulo, as it broke with the concept of curriculum encyclopedic, in the name of greater effectiveness in the intellectual, moral and physical. Finally, the analysis of the reform of 1920 explains how the issues outside the educational field were opposed to the training model that prevailed in Sao Paulo since 1890, redefining the concept of citizenship and bringing as a direct consequence of the "mutilation" of the device São Paulo school, overcoming the training model and not use the full reference intuitive as general method of training.

Abstract:
Thesis (MScMedSc (Rehabilitation))--University of Stellenbosch, 2008.
Stroke is the second commonest cause of mortality worldwide and remains a leading cause of adult physical disability. It is estimated that sixty percent of South African stroke survivors require assistance with at least one activity of daily living. This burden is predominantly on the shoulders of mostly untrained caregivers. The process of enabling caregivers to make choices conducive to their own health as well as the health of the stroke survivors is multidimensional. One of the cornerstones of this process is the provision of information. In 1995, the Centre for Rehabilitation Studies of the University of Stellenbosch started to develop a training package for stroke care at home. The training takes the form of an interactive workshop and a booklet with practical information. The aim of this study was to refine and pilot this booklet for implementation with the training. The study found that existing guidelines to evaluate the appropriateness of written material for developing communities (measured by Hugo’s grading model), were inadequate. Consequently, a new checklist, based on twenty existing checklists, was compiled. This list, as well as the Suitability Assessment of Material (SAM), was used to evaluate the booklet and make recommendations for a pre-pilot refinement. Even though this checklist has not been validated, it revealed similar results to the SAM when applied to the booklet. After cosultation with the authors, improvements were effected to the booklet The booklet was tested with four samples of the target audience. The functional literacy of the participants was determined using a standardised literacy test. A fifth sample completed a questionnaire on their preference between the pre- and postrefined booklet. Experts in the field of rehabilitation and graphic design also commented on the booklet. This study confirmed the need of stroke survivors and their caregivers for written health information. The refined booklet was found to be an appropriate tool to address the needs of the target audience. The participants perceived the booklet as useful and comprehensible and the readability level was shown to correspond with the tested literacy level of the samples. However, there is a need for printed material on topics related to stroke not currently covered in the booklet, e.g. spasticity. This study showed that the checklist could be used to tailor written health information that is preferred by the target audience. It confirmed that the testing of printed material with stakeholders could expose additional gaps after applying the checklist. Recommendations for further improvements were made based on the comments of the participants. It is foreseen that the new checklist could be a valuable tool for developing future written health material. Finally, it is recommended that an interdisciplinary team that includes a graphic designer be involvement from the planning stages.

Abstract: The Brazilian publishing market in expansion since the first decades of the XX Century has incorporated at its own manner the speeches produced either by the hygienist movement as well as by those who understood upbringing as a way to regenerate a nation, leading it into progress and modernity. Written mostly by pediatricians, mother guidebooks were part of a collection that was intended for the education of the population. Despite the references contained in such publications regarding the scientific procedures related to children upbringing, identifying such publications as useful reading material allowed for analyzing them as one of the medical practices directed to women, in order to spread familial behavioral models that would guarantee the generation, the healthy development and upbringing of the Brazilian children. This work adopts, as its main theoretical reference, Roger Chartier's contributions about the history of books and reading, and Michel Foucalt's contributions to the understanding of power mechanisms over the populations, defined by the author as biopolitics. Production processes and indications of circulation of mother guidebooks were regarded to as fundamental elements to the understanding of the diffusion of representations over the women, the children and their upbringing, according to models proposed by medicine, as part of a bigger process of intervention in the Brazilian society. At the same time, the analysis of the reading prescriptions contained in the text and graphic characteristics of such printings allows for the approaching of the practices proposed to mothers. Due to this reason, mother guidebooks that form the corpus of this survey, published between 1919 and 1957, have been taken both as subject and as source of study. Among the raised issues, the main inquiry is concerned with how much space such printings might have taken in the process of diffusion of hygienic practices regarding either the care with the child's body as well as the child's upbringing based on medical recommendations. The privileged treatment given to woman readers beginning with the redesigning of maternal functions, according to scientific principles, also allowed for questioning the representations that might have been produced about the women's reading, published by authors and publishers of such guidebooks that have been studied, based on the insertion of different text and graphic devices.

Abstract:
Fifty years after Brown v. Board of Education, there remain large gaps in academic achievement between children of color and White students (Darling-Hammond, 2007). It is estimated that by 2050, the population of the United States will increase by 50%; 90% of which will be accounted for by minorities (Vanneman, Hamilton, Anderson, & Rahman, 2009). In less than 50 years, our citizenry will be comprised of "groups that are over represented among low achievers, and under represented among high achievers" (Ferguson, 2005, p. 4). Nationwide, districts are addressing the issue of the achievement gap through implementing formal equity professional development opportunities at their school sites. While formal equity training leaves participants transformed, they leave with little to no support in how to change their practice in order to teach more equitably. Therefore, based on Bridges' and Hallinger's (1995) problem based learning approach, the handbook, Keeping Equity in Mind, was developed, field tested and revised using Borg and Gall's (2003) research and development cycle. The purpose of this qualitative study was to determine the usefulness of the handbook, Keeping Equity in Mind, in supporting teacher leaders in continued equity work in their classrooms once formal equity training had ended at their school sites. Participants implemented the strategies presented in the handbook in order to determine its usefulness in supporting teacher leaders in continued equity work in their classrooms. The findings of this study determined Keeping Equity in Mind is a useful tool for teachers attempting to close the achievement gap in their classrooms and the administrators who support them.

Draper, Daniel Paul. "Guiding the Work of Professional Learning Communities: Perspectives for School Leaders." PDXScholar, 2014. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/1823.

Abstract:
Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) are groups of educators committed to working collaboratively in ongoing processes of collective inquiry and action research to achieve better results for the students they serve. PLCs operate under the assumption that the key to improved learning for students is continuous job-embedded learning for educators (DuFour, DuFour, Eaker, & Many, 2006). Researchers and practitioners agree that PLCs are critical to the overall success of schools. The problem is that implementing PLCs with fidelity to an inquiry process is a real challenge. Most school districts do not have a systematic or comprehensive approach to guide their PLC process. School leaders are in need of quality tools and resources to assist them in implementing PLCs. As a possible solution to this problem, a design team of four Estacada School District principals and one vice principal was convened to create, field-test and refine a handbook for PLC leadership. The handbook was field-tested in four schools and evaluated to determine its usefulness. The study's primary research questions were: (a) Is the PLC handbook a useful resource for school leaders? and (b) What are the handbook's strengths and weaknesses? Secondary research questions focused on specific topics and sections of the handbook: (a) How do school leaders organize and support a PLC framework? (b) How can PLCs support school change initiatives? (c) How can PLCs gather and analyze student data? (d) How can PLCs plan for future action? and (e) How can PLCs troubleshoot challenges? The design team relied on a problem-based learning approach (Bridges & Hallinger, 1995) and the use of a research and development process (Borg & Gall, 1989) to design an educational product ready for operational use in their schools. The design team met weekly for regularly scheduled meetings. They used the Critical Friends Consultancy Protocol (Harmony Education Center, 2013) as a systematic way to problem solve and collect qualitative data. The data collected from these sessions were transcribed, coded for themes, and analyzed. Other data sources that were used included the review of institutional documentation, structured interviews with teacher leaders, and survey results. The design team then refined its PLC handbook through the first seven steps of the research and development process: (a) Research and information collecting; (b) Planning objectives, learning activities, and small scale testing; (c) Developing a preliminary form of the product; (d) Preliminary field-testing; (e) Main product revision; (f) Main field-testing; and (g) Operational product revision. The design team determined that the handbook was in fact a useful resource for school leaders, and it helped move PLC work forward in each of the four schools. The team found that the handbook had a number of strengths, including the clarification of key terminology and the establishment of a common language for PLCs. Another noted strength was that the activities included in the handbook were user-friendly. A noted opportunity was that the field-tested handbook did not create viable ways to involve parents, families, and community members in PLC work alongside educators. This opportunity is being addressed by the design team in future handbook revisions. The handbook helped school leaders organize and support a PLC framework. The design team confirmed that the handbook assisted PLCs in completing the work required of major school change initiatives, including Differentiated Instruction/Sheltered Instruction, Response to Intervention/Positive Behavioral Intervention Support, Common Core State Standards, and Proficiency-Based Learning. The design team also found the PLC handbook to be useful as an orientation tool for new staff members, as well as a valuable review tool for PLC veterans, particularly regarding how to collect and analyze student assessment data. The handbook also helped PLCs plan future action relative to providing intervention and enrichment opportunities for students. Finally, the handbook provided tools to help educators troubleshoot challenges that surfaced during their PLC work. The design team will continue to refine its handbook and provide support for the Estacada School District and community as mutually-beneficial PLC-related activities, grants, and projects are pursued. The optimal next step for future use of the handbook would be for several schools and districts throughout Oregon, particularly from small, rural areas, to pilot the handbook. The piloting schools and districts could then share the roadblocks and success stories pertinent to their use of the handbook, which would in turn support the design team in making a quality final product revision.

Florence, Linda L. "School District Bond Campaigns: Strategies That Ensure Successful Outcomes." PDXScholar, 2014. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/1847.

Abstract:
When the polls close and the ballots are counted, the best sound is the roar of ecstatic cheering from delighted but exhausted campaign committee members. A bond campaign takes an inordinate amount of work, but the results are worth the effort when the campaign is managed in a systematic way. Districts can be successful bond recipients when they effectively market their schools to gain the support of their constituents. Public schools across the U.S. are in dire need of major repairs, remodeling, and rebuilding to meet the educational needs of students. Unfortunately, passing a school bond election is entrusted to school superintendents and other district leaders, who are often inexperienced and ill-prepared and have neither the time nor inclination to focus on tasks that take them far from their primary purpose of teaching and learning. Attaining voter support in a school bond election requires a thorough understanding of school and community issues. The literature review focuses on communication theory and research to garner support of school district's internal and external stakeholders. Communication is instrumental in passage of a construction bond election. This dissertation is theoretically grounded in problem-based learning and the research and development process. The tested product is a handbook for superintendents or other district-level administrators on strategies and practices that assist in passing a construction bond election. In the Preliminary and Main field tests, superintendents and other district leaders used the handbook in a workshop. Survey results provided summative data to assess the efficacy of the handbook and the workshop. Formative results also provided rich information to improve and revise the handbook and workshop.

Abstract: This research aims at reconstructing some aspects of Gilberto Freyre¿s intellectual trajectory between the late 1920s and the late 1950s, with a focus on the systematization of his sociological ideas. The analysis starts with his teaching experience at the Pernambuco¿s Normal School in 1929-1930, when the author produced his first conceptual tools that enabled him to produce his particular interpretation of Brazilian society, consolidating at he same time sociological studies. Following this his teaching experience at the Federal District¿s University, between 1935-1937, is investigated. It was the only experience Freyre had as a fixed member of the faculty of a Brazilian university. The analysis of the manuscripts from his classes allows for a comprehension of his ideas in that period. An investigation of the first two editions of his compedium Sociologia: uma introdução aos seus princípios (Sociology: an introduction to its principles), first published in 1945, is presented at last. This was a singular book in his trajectory, resulting from teaching experience at the above mentioned institutions. In the process of reconstructing Freyre¿s trajectory ¿ including the crafting of his sociological ideas and the social and political context that served as a basis for his intelectual activity ¿ one notices the different expectations one had on Sociology in Brazil

Abstract:
Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) by magnetic resonance (MR) is a recent method of acquisition whose utilization has been fairly reduced in services that use equipment with DTI software. From this situation, one observed the need to develop a guide for professionals involved in MR, which would serve as a reference source to assist in the acquisition of DTI. In order to make this guide, a reference was necessary to be given a steer and it was obtained through a questionnaire administered to professionals who work with MRI in a clinic in Curitiba. Through the questionnaire, it was possible to raise the concepts and parameters the guide could explain, especially emphasizing technique basic parameters, forms of data reconstruction and visualization forms. The guide was made explaining the acquisition of DTI, the main parameters involved and the common terms for these kinds of tests. In addition, 15 commonly asked questions about the DTI were prepared with quick reference tables. The final result is an easy-to-understand guide which aims to help the area professionals to search, apprehend and use the diffusion tensor imaging technique. Although it is ready, there is the need to introduce the guide and collect suggestions, and still, improve the professionals’ early questions to enhance the guide.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the Summa Angelica de casibus conscientie written by Angelo da Chivasso (d. 1495), first printed in 1486. Angelo belonged to the Observantine branch of the Franciscan Order and was its vicar general four times. Having documented Angelo's life and career, the thesis centres on the construction and purpose of his Summa. It assesses its originality within the tradition of confession manuals and the reasons for its popularity. It argues that the structure is very clear because Angelo intended it for the use of simplices confessores, by which he probably meant priests who did not have a university degree. He arranged his material alphabetically and in the longer sections, paragraphs were numbered, making cross-referencing easy. He included a list of authorities and explained the manner of quoting from them. Not all these features were original, but together they helped to make the Summa popular. There are several noteworthy features of Angelo's Summa. The procedures described had been laid down in earlier manuals, including the need for more rigorous questions - ad status – relating to the profession of each penitent and where this might lead to sin. Angelo however diverged from some earlier authorities by warning about excessive rigour. Circumstances were to be taken into account, and where possible penitents to be given the benefit of the doubt. The number of copies of Angelo's Summa printed throughout Western Christendom during his lifetime and following his death are a tribute to its importance. The period of fame however, was short. Martin Luther was a particularly virulent critic of the Summa, and the Catholic Church changed the method of hearing confessions, making much of it redundant, though it survived for some centuries more as a work of reference for confessors.
