Full textThis thesis focuses on the development of new spectrometers for submillimeter astronomy. The study of the interstellar medium and its evolution now requires new high-performance detection instruments that are extremely sensitive and integrate photometry, spectroscopy, and polarimetry. The B-BOP bolometer arrays, developed by our teams and inherited from the detectors of the PACS instrument on the HERSCHEL satellite, can measure the polarization of light within pixels. Building on these developments and the excellent characterization results obtained with these bolometers, we are interested in adding spectroscopic capability to the focal plane of such detectors. In this manuscript, we present the development of several concepts for compact, all-silicon Fabry-Perot spectrometers that achieve very good spectral performance with unrivaled efficiency. We study the characteristics and theoretical performance of these Fabry-Perot spectrometers and their ability to be coupled to bolometer arrays. In particular, we take a closer look at the characteristics of multilayer Bragg mirrors and the associated spectral performance for Fabry-Perot interferometry. We then present the results of characterization measurements of the first prototypes of these Fabry-Perot spectrometers, carried out on a dedicated cryogenic optical bench. Finally, we conclude this work with a comparative study of the observational performance of the developed instruments by simulating their installation in real observatories

Full textLaboratory measured rotational spectra of anti- and gauche-normal-propyl cyanide up to 506 GHz have been analyzed to obtain a precise set of molecular parameters for the ground state and five low-lying vibrational states of each conformer. The objective is to be able to make best possible predictions for radio-astronomy. In total around 15000 lines have been included in the analysis. Improved parameters have been determined for v30 = 1, v30 = 2, v18 = 1, v29 = 1, for the anti conformer, and v30 = 1, v30 = 2, v28 = 1, v29 = 1, for the gauche conformer. Parameters are derived for the first time for v18 = v30 = 1 of the anti conformer and v29 = v30 = 1 of the gauche conformer. Evidence has been found for vibrational coupling for some transitions above 380 GHz. The coupling between v18 = 1 and v30 = 2 of the anti conformer has been well characterized. Internal rotation splitting is also observed but not expected to be resolved in astronomical spectra

Full textThe physical and chemical conditions of the first stages of star formation are favourable for the formation of complex organic molecules containing carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen which could be the precursors of the prebiotic species discovered in meteorites. Studies suggest that this complexity begins with chemical reactions on interstellar grains and the subsequent evaporation of the species formed on these grains in the warm core region of the forming star. Recently, the Herschel Space Observatory (HSO) and the ALMA interferometer have begun to make available new sensitive high spectral and/or high spatial resolution studies in the submillimetre and terahertz domains. Thus many molecules can now be studied with unequalled sensitivity over a wide spectral range. However, accurate spectroscopic data necessary to identify some of the complex molecules which interest us are missing because of the difficulties in measuring and especially in analysing their laboratory spectra. During my thesis I have been particularly interested in the 13C and deuterated isotopologues of complex molecules, both from a spectroscopic and from an astrophysical point of view. The study of the abundances of these isotopologues in the interstellar medium could supply information to help us to understand reactions pathways which lead to molecular complexity and determine which reaction take place in the gas phase and which on grains. First of all, I will present the notions useful to understand this work linking molecular spectroscopy and radioastronomy as well as the tools used; also I will introduce the different instruments available for observations. Secondly, I will detail the work carried out on 13C-substituted ethanol and deuterated glycolaldehyde, two complex organic molecules of astrophysical interest. The work involved laboratory measurements and analysis leading to a set of molecular parameters used to subsequently produce predictions of astrophysical spectra for the studied species, under the physical conditions of the astrophysical objects of interest. These synthetic spectra were compared with existing spectral surveys of star-forming regions thus identifying several candidate lines that were unfortunately too limited to prove detection; they also allowed the estimation of maximum abundances for all species. Then I will describe our own observations taken with the aim of confirming the detections and showing possible abundance differences between different isotopomers of each isotopologue. Finally I will give perspectives for future observations and further developments based on this work

Full textAs galaxies evolve, their Interstellar Medium (ISM) becomes continually enriched with metals, and this metal enrichment influences the subsequent star formation. Low metallicity dwarf galaxies of the local Universe are ideal candidates to study the influence of metal enrichment on the ISM properties of galaxies and gives us insight into the enrichment process and star formation under ISM conditions that may provide clues to conditions in early universe metal-poor systems. Previous studies have shown that the ISM of dwarf galaxies poses a number of interesting puzzles in terms of the abundance of dust grains, the dust composition and even the FIR emission processes. However these studies were limited to the warmer dust emitting at wavelengths shorter than 200 microns and were done only on a small number of dwarf galaxies. Thanks to its increased sensitivity and resolution in FIR and submillimeter (submm) wavelengths, Herschel gives us a new view on the cold dust properties in galaxies and enables us to study the lowest metallicity galaxies in a systematic way. In this work, I carry out a study of the dust properties in dwarf galaxies and compare with more metal rich environments, in order to address the question of the impact of metallicity on the dust properties. The novelty of this work lays in the fact that dwarf galaxies are studied here in a systematic way, enabling us to derive and quantify the general properties that are representative of these systems. This study is conducted over the full IR-to-submm range, using new FIR/submm Herschel observations, Spitzer, WISE, IRAS and 2MASS data. We complete this set of data with longer submm measurements from ground-based facilities such as APEX and JCMT to study the presence and characteristics of the submm excess in my sample of galaxies. I also collect Hi and CO data to access the gas properties of the galaxies and study the evolution of the G/D with metallicity. Our study reveal different dust properties in low-metallicity environments than that observed in more metal-richs systems (e.g., an overall warmer dust component). An excess submm emission is often apparent near and/or beyond 500 microns rendering large uncertainties in the dust properties, even for something as fundamental as dust masses. Some of the smallest excesses can be explained by using another dust composition with more emissive grains. Ideal tracer of the chemical evolutionary stage of a galaxy, the gas-to-dust mass ratios (G/D) is found to be much higher than what is expected by simple chemical evolution models. Interpreted with more sophisticated chemical evolution models, including dust growth in the ISM and/or episodic star formation, the relation of the G/D with metallicity and its scatter can be explained by the wide variety of environments we are considering
