Abstract:
Abstract Distance Education (DE) theorists have argued about the requirement for a theory to be comprehensive in a way that can explicate many of the activities associated with DE. Currently, Transactional Distance Theory (TDT) (Moore, 1993) and the Theory of Instructional Dialogue (IDT) (Caspi & Gorsky, 2006) are the most prominent theories, yet they still do not represent a unified and comprehensive theory for DE. This paper provides a review of the existing literature on DE theories and identifies potential gaps in theorising distance education. Building on Giddens’ (1984) work, an innovative approach to theorising DE is proposed through the conceptualisation of the Adapting Structuration Theory In Distance Education (ASTIDE) model as a means to explicate DE operations and practices at the institutional and national/international level. It also presents evidence, from a larger study, of the necessity of a comprehensive model such as the ASTIDE constructed through an investigation into the DE systems of developing and developed countries.

Abstract:
Archaeological models of Clovis adaptations are divided between those that argue for a single hunting adaptation characterized by high residential mobility without fixed territories and those that argue for a diversity of environment-specific adaptations and settlement systems. The Dietz site (35LK1529), the largest Clovis site in the Pacific Northwest, is composed of many overlapping, spatially coherent artifact clusters from which 75 whole and fragmentary fluted points have been recovered. The artifact assemblage is inconsistent with use of the site as a kill, camp, or quarry site. Geoarchaeological data show that the site area during the Clovis occupation was a sparsely vegetated, seasonal playa that is unlikely to have supported large herds of game animals. However, the site sits astride what was probably a major transportation corridor linking highly productive ecosystems in the adjoining basins, and Clovis foragers appear to have camped at Dietz repeatedly while traveling between these nearby basins. The systematic and redundant use of a geographically small landscape by Clovis foragers is inconsistent with expectations based on a model of residentially mobile foragers occupying new territories.

Abstract:
A new electromagnetism is still expected to be developed. Thus, under such a principlewhere nature works as a group, an electromagnetism beyond Maxwell is studied. It considersthat light metric antecedes electric charge for founding the EM phenomena. Based on wholenessprinciple, Lorentz group and gauge invariance this electromagnetism sticked on light is proposed. Then, by electromagnetism it will be understood the physics derived from Lorentz group potentialfields family (for simplicity other fields are not included). New electromagnetic fields, sectors, layers and regimes are developed. It yields a branch with transversal and longitudinalEM fields, granular and collective sectors, I-fields layers and four regimes (photonic, massive, neutral, charged) connected through a global photon. Their relationships are determined by astate equation identified as Global Maxwell equation. It contains new Gauss and Ampere laws, exclusive Faraday law for polarization and magnetization vectors, divergenceless magnetizationvector having fields as sources, self-interacting photons mediated by a dimensionless couplingconstant and other features. It is complemented by a Global Lorentz equation which besidesthe usual Lorentz force add forces depending on mass and on potential fields.

Abstract:
Transculturality is defined as “the condition of being either between cultures or astride two (or more) cultures.” The condition has both a dynamic aspect, i.e., movement between or across boundaries, but, more importantly, a social and psychological aspect, i.e., movement between or across social systems whose cultural characteristics are fundamentally different. Transculturality may occur both between and within persons. Data on language mastery and use, educational attainment, school dropout rates, occupations, and incomes of transcultural persons in the United States are examined for generalizable inferences. Language appears to be both a powerful component of culture and of great power in transcultural situations. Language mastery and use are strongly related to a host of adaptation variables. Three models (syndrome, risk factor, and multivariate) are discussed briefly.

Abstract:
The apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) obtained by helium-3 magnetic resonance imaging over several seconds is thought to reflect diffusion impairment due to both intra- and interacinar structure. In this study, numerical simulations of intra-acinar gas mixing and effective diffusion were performed in a multiple-branch-point model of the human acinus. Using a previously described method, we computed the instantaneous effective diffusion resulting from the diffusive impairment imposed by intra-acinar branching for varying times up to 5 s. We also tested the influence on effective diffusion of intra-acinar collateral channels in the fully alveolated intra-acinar airways to mimic the effect of emphysema. Randomly connecting two or four pairs of airways per generation (in generations 19–25) led to a 40 and 142% increase, respectively, in effective diffusion coefficient cumulated over the time interval of 0.2–5 s. Finally, we also used a system of two coupled multiple branch-point models to simulate diffusive attenuation over a 50-s interval in cases of purely acinar tagging (i.e., the initial gas concentration = 1 in one acinus and 0 in the other) and of partial tagging astride on two acini. It is shown that, in the latter case, the decay rate cannot be approximated by a mono-exponential with a several-fold faster decay for times below 10 s due to intra-acinar diffusion. We conclude that both the characteristic biphasic time dependence of simulated effective diffusion and its sensitivity to intra-acinar structural change mimic experimental ADC behavior. Additional simulations of combined inter- and intra-acinar diffusion strongly suggest that neglecting intra-acinar branching would in fact lead to considerable error of simulated ADC.

Abstract:
A new Synechocystis 6714 mutant, loxIIA, resistant to the phenol-type herbicide ioxynil was isolated and characterized. The mutation found in the psbA gene (encoding the D1 photosystem II protein) is at the same codon 266 as for the first ioxynil-resistant mutant IoxIA previously selected [G. Ajlani. I. Meyer, C. Vernotte. and C. Astier, FEBS Lett. 246, 207-210 (1989)]. In IoxIIA, the change of Asn 266 to Asp gives a 3 × resistance, whereas in IoxIA, the change of the same amino acid to Thr gives a 10 × resistance. The effect of these different amino acid substitutions on the ioxynil resistance phenotype has allowed us to construct molecular models and calculate the hydrogen-bonding energies between the hydroxyl group of ioxynil and the respective amino acids at position 266.

Abstract:
Synopsis Courtship behavior in salamanders is often complex and involves well-documented communication from males to females in multiple sensory modalities. Historically, behaviors exhibited during the major stages of courtship have been predominately framed as a male acting and signaling to “persuade” a passive female to participate in courtship and remain with him until sperm release is completed. In this review, we use courtship descriptions for lungless salamanders (Plethodontidae) as a case study to illustrate this historical bias of a male-centered perspective. We then re-examine the literature and summarize the many ways females are active participants during plethodontid courtships. We also relate female behaviors to the types of female-to-male communication that may occur. For example, females have been documented to approach a male and initiate courtship, participate in mutual head rubbing, and step astride the male’s tail to begin the tail-straddling walk (a key courtship behavior observed in all plethodontids). Additionally, females have glands that may produce chemical signals that males respond to during courtship. We conclude that communication during courtship is more accurately described as a two-way interaction where each partner’s behavior is coordinated with the other’s via multi-modal signaling. Shifting the lens through which we view courtship and behavior provides insight into which female behaviors and anatomical features are most likely to be used for communication with males.

Abstract:
Late Cenozoic deformation along the Australian/Pacific plate boundary is seen in onshore New Zealand as zones characterised by extension- or transcurrent- or contraction-related structures. High-resolution multichannel seismic reflection data were acquired in several of these tectonic zones and successfully reveal the shallow structures within them. Thirty kilometres of dynamite reflection data in the Rangitaiki Plains, eastern Bay of Plenty, define a series of NE-trending normal faults within this extensional back-arc volcanic region. The data cross surface ruptures activated during the 1987 Edgecumbe earthquake. In the southern North Island, a 20 km Mini-Sosie? seismic profile details the Quaternary sedimentation history and reveals the structure of the active strike-slip and thrust fault systems that form the western and eastern edges of the Wairarapa basin, respectively. This basin is considered to sit astride the boundary between a zone of distributed strike-slip faults and an active accretionary prism. In the Nelson area, northwestern South Island, previously unrecognised low-angle thrust faults of Neogene or Quaternary age are seen from Mini-Sosie data to occur at very shallow depths. Crustal shortening here was previously thought to arise from movement on high-angle reverse faults, and the identification of these low-angle faults has prompted a reassessment of that model. A grid of 18 km of Mini-Sosie seismic data from the central eastern South Island delineates Neogene or Quaternary thrust faults in Cenozoic sediments. The thrusts are interpreted as reactivated Early Eocene normal faults, and the thrust fault geometry is dominated by these older structures.

Droin, Jean-Baptiste. "Modélisation d’un transitoire de perte de débit primaire non protégé dans un RNR-Na." Thesis, Université Grenoble Alpes (ComUE), 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016GREAI044/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Within the framework of the Generation IV Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor (SFR) R&D program of CEA (French Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique et aux Energies Alternatives), safety in case of severe accidents is assessed.Such transients are usually simulated with mechanistic codes (such as SAS-SFR and SIMMER III). As a complement to these codes, which give reference accidental transient calculations, a new physico-statistical approach is currently followed by the CEA; its final objective being to derive the variability of the main results of interest for safety. This approach involves a fast-running description of extended accident sequences coupling physical models for the main phenomena to advanced statistical analysis techniques. It enables to perform a large number of simulations in a reasonable computational time and to describe all the possible bifurcations of the accident transient. In this context, this PhD work presents the physical tool (models and results assessment) dedicated to the initiation and primary phases of an Unprotected Loss Of Flow accident (i.e. until the end of sub-assemblies degradation and before large molten pools formation). The accident phenomenology during these phases is described and illustrated by numerous experimental evidences. It is underlined that the features of the new heterogeneous core concept (called CFV of the French ASTRID prototype) leads to different kinds of ULOF transients than those occurring in the previous past homogeneous cores (SuperPhenix, Phenix...). Indeed, its negative void effect drops the nuclear power when sodium heats-up and possibly boils. This enables three types of ULOF transients characterized by various core final states; the first two types leading to final coolable core states in natural circulation flow (the first one in single phase, the second one in stabilized two-phase flow) whereas the core undergoes a flow excursion followed by sub-assemblies degradation in the last type. In this study, a particular attention is paid to stabilize boiling occurrence which leads to minimize severe accident consequences. The phenomena occurring during the various ULOF transients are modelled in accordance to the level of details required to catch all the possible bifurcations of the transient. The tool coupled different (2D, 1D and 0D) models of thermics, thermo-hydraulics, core degradation (material melting and motions) and neutronics. The assumptions associated to these models are highlighted, discussed and validated. The physical tool capability of simulating the various realistic ULOF transients (without boiling, with stabilized boiling or flow excursion after boiling) is demonstrated by comparisons to experimental results (GR19, SCARABEE experiments) and to mechanistic simulations (CATHARE2 and SIMMER III).Parametric studies are then carried out on two variables: the fuel burn-up and the model of neutronic feedbacks. They underline the important influence of these parameters on the transient and the final core state. Finally, a preliminary sensitivity analysis (2000 simulations) is performed on 26 uncertain parameters (linked to initial core configuration, accident features, model uncertainties and radial nodalization). The variability of the final core state is underlined and quantified; only around 25% of cases lead to core degradation. The main influent parameters on transient phenomena are also identified, enabling to prioritize core design and safety studies. In the future, this tool will be used for safety-informed design and stability analyses of fast reactor systems, allowing to emphasize the main dominant phenomena and trends of significance for safety assessment

This book considers the impact of neoliberal policies and ideology on the status of care work in Nordic countries. With new research perspectives and empirical analyses, the book assesses challenges for care work including technologies, management and policy-making. Arguing that there is a care crisis even in the supposedly feminist Nordic ‘nirvana’, the book explores understandings of the care crisis, the serious consequences for gender equality and the hitherto neglected effects on the long-term sustainability of the Nordic welfare states. This astute take on the Nordic welfare model provides insights into what the Nordic experience can tell us about wider international issues in care.

Abstract:
The emotions are an important feature of Jewish life and thought throughout the ages. From biblical descriptions of a God of pathos to early rabbinic and medieval works detailing the virtues, to mystical tracts focused on the inner life, and occasionally portraying emotion filled religious experiences of the adept, there have always been Jewish representations of the affective dimensions of life. In addition, the many ways Jews have actually participated in prayer and in the celebration of holidays, and in the construction of material objects and spaces in which such activities took place, also give evidence of emotional texture of the lives of Jews. John Corrigan's concluding observations in his introduction to Religion and Emotion: Approaches and Interpretations, in which he sets forth a model for future scholarship in this field, provide a standard against which to assess present investigations into Judaism and the emotions. Others who have produced methodologically astute scholarship adding significantly to the understanding of aspects of Jewish thought on the emotions are Michael Fishbane, Daniel Boyarin, and Hava Tirosh-Samuelson.

Abstract:
This book is the first published biography of the tap dancer, singer, actor, and comedian John W. Bubbles. From an impoverished childhood in Nashville, Bubbles rose to prominence in the world of entertainment, fashioning a long and varied career in vaudeville, Broadway, movies, and television. Along the way he invented a new style of tap dancing (now called rhythm tap) and created the role of Sportin’ Life for George Gershwin’s classic opera Porgy and Bess. With pianist Buck Washington he formed the team Buck and Bubbles, one of the greatest acts in the history of vaudeville. As a tap dancer in the 1920s and 1930s, Bubbles not only inspired a generation of dancers but also probably influenced the development of jazz music as well. Through it all he had to contend with the soul-crushing barriers of a country built on white supremacy. Although his dancing innovations provided a model for white movie stars such as Fred Astaire and Eleanor Powell, Bubbles himself was denied success in Hollywood because of his skin color. Even in vaudeville, his natural element, the powers-that-be artificially restricted his advancement so as not to overwhelm his white competitors. These injustices were the greatest sorrows of a heady and tumultuous life, one marked by dazzling professional achievements as well as corrosive personal addictions. Drawing from a wealth of newly discovered primary sources, this book places that life in the context of its time.

AbstractThis chapter examines a new form of autofiction that has emerged in the twenty-first century, which the chapter proposes to call metanarrative autofiction. Such writing displays awareness of how our ways of narrating our lives are socially, culturally, and historically conditioned. The chapter conceptualizes metanarrativity in this context as a form of self-reflexive storytelling that makes narrative its theme, reflecting not only on the process of its own narration but also on the roles of cultural narrative models in making sense of our lives. The chapter discusses affordances of metanarrative autofiction in Annie Ernaux’s Les Années (The Years) (2008), Karl Ove Knausgaard’s Min kamp (My Struggle) (2009–2011), and the Finnish singer-songwriter Astrid Swan’s Viimeinen kirjani (2019, My Last Book).

Full text
Abstract:
Aspect sentiment triplet extraction (ASTE) is a relative difficult and novel research, which is a subtask of aspect-based sentiment analysis (ABSA). ASTE is a task that extracts triplets of aspects being discussed, relevant opinion entities and sentiment polarities from a given sentence. Existing approaches mainly deal with this problem by pipeline or simple multi-task structure, which do not take full advantage of the strong correlation among the three elements of the triplet. In this work, we adopt two special tagging schemes, AOBIO and Pair Tagging Scheme (PTS), and propose an efficient end-to-end multi-task model named Joint Aspect Sentiment Triplet Extraction (JASTE) to address ASTE task. JASTE is composed of three modules: aspect and opinion extraction module, relation module and sentiment module. Specially, the relation module is designed to capture the relationship between aspect and opinion properly. The three modules interact with each other by sharing the same embedding. Extensive experimental results on different benchmark datasets show that JASTE can significantly outperform state-of-the-art performances.

Well-organized and astute project management methods are indispensable in the equipment installation development. The strategy team evaluates the correct electrical equipment installation process from a flawless good start standpoint. The transition from the conceptual renewable energy incorporation activities to the detailed requirements of process design as well as the resource commitment is imperative for the implementation of the capital-intense project. The model must have exceptional management commitment to execute the technology within the current infrastructure. One of the key elements for delivery of the desired results within the scheme is the specification or scope. Strict adherence to the plan is expected throughout the project lifecycle. The manager is responsible for control of the project by monitoring its progression, identifying risks and resolving issues, and providing status of completed milestones.

Abstract:
The chapter discusses Fatima’s khuṭba or oration, a manifesto of protest against the historical injustice inflicted on her and her descendants by the Caliph Abu Bakr (632–634) when he decided not to grant her the right to inherit the oasis of Fadak from her father’s – the Prophet Muhammad’s – property. The text is likely apocryphal but nevertheless old, being attributed to the eighth-century historian Abu Mikhnaf (d. 773–774) and also preserved in the ninth-century anthology Balāghāt al-nisāʾ by Ibn Abi Tahir Tayfur (d. 893). The text portrays Fatima not only as a staunch defender of the rights of the ahl al-bayt but also as an astute interpreter of Islamic scripture and law. It is indeed on the basis of this text that Fatima has been held up as a model of female religious authority in subsequent Shiʿi tradition.

Abstract:
Pure cinema is defined in terms of the interrelationship of formal “fragments” that subtend an infinite array of formal systems within the work. In this model, the aesthetic philosophy of the fragment is developed through the seminal work of Raymond Bellour, one of the most astute of the classical Hitchcockian theorists. The fragment structures aesthetic form across mise en scène, montage, sound design, and narrative. The philosophy of the fragment is read in further detail and greater philosophical specificity through the historical tension between Eisenstein’s montage as whole and Deleuze’s attempts to read montage through the itinerary of the part. The resonance or vibration of the part is read as intensity, structuring the “excessive affect” that underpins the aesthetic of the fragment in film form. The aesthetic of the fragment is revealed in close formal analyses in Hitchcock’s North by Northwest, Argento’s Suspiria, and De Palma’s Union Station sequence in The Untouchables.

Abstract:
The modern business age is about astute collaboration. This is so because the nature of competition amongst businesses has changed significantly. The core change has resulted from the advances of electronic communications. The ability of businesses to execute their business processes independent of geographical or technological boundaries has brought about an utterly different type of business eco-system. The new business model mandates the business to look around, observe its associated businesses, establish alliances with them and provide unified solutions to its customers in a way that encapsulated the underlying ‘mix’ of complexities and combinations of services and products desired by the customer. Thus, in a way, competition has transcended itself and businesses have started associating with each other at a different level, with changed scope and global standards. The discussion on collaboration in this book is to understand the way in which it is affecting businesses and what is required of the businesses in order to handle collaboration without giving up competition completely.

Abstract:
The traditional artificial guide service can be substituted by the advancedintelligent tourism guide system, which can help many developing tourism industries asthe demand for tourism is going higher in today's world. An intelligent tourism guidesystem can create automatic recommendations according to the preferences [1]. Withthe instantaneous evolution of computer technology and electronic informationtechnology as the basis, this chapter combines the tree-based algorithm and associatedknowledge of tree theory to implement an algorithm and processing plan. The objectiveof our approach is to build a relationship between the user and the system. Theapplication provides many services to the user meeting their needs and the purpose ofgaining information about the places. The application mainly represents a mobile tourguide system with augmented reality. The main objective of the application is to makea system that runs on most of the mobile devices and becomes helpful to the user whilevisiting new places. The system should find a place using user preferences, likebeaches, historical monuments, hill stations, temples, adventurous places, etc. Thesystem should show recommendations about those places along with the descriptionand images. This application will help the people who love to travel and want to travelto new places without having previous information about the place. This model [2-5]makes the use of efficient BST Searching as compared to the database. The informationabout various places is stored in the tree data structure, and it becomes easy to store alot of data in the tree as compared to the database because it requires more memory andtime to store lots of information into the database. The main advantage of using thesystem is to make the searching process easier and to ease the process of storing thedata in the tree rather than the database. The tree-based algorithm is efficient in termsof storage and retrieval of data so that the performance of the system is enhanced. Theapplication takes less time to fetch the data using a tree-based algorithm according toadded preferences by the user as compared to the database, which takes more time tofetch the data and to display it as required.

Abstract:
Understandings of trauma in the colonial context fall largely into two strands. A therapeutic strand endorses the potential for “healing” from colonial trauma in the present, postcolonial era but fails to grasp how much this era reprises the toxins of colonialism itself. This view implicitly encourages the once-colonized to align themselves with the purported “health” of postcolonial modernity. An anti-therapeutic strand grants the need for a critique of the postcolonial but generalizes the historically specific toxins of that era to any and all social orders—hence making it difficult to imagine social change. Toni Morrison’s Beloved and Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things provide more historically astute and dialectical accounts than the theoretical models offer. These examples of postcolonial historical fiction are modernist in form; they explore distinct yet homologous types of domination (slavery and the slave trade on one hand, exploitation colonialism in India on the other) through a similar set of representational techniques. These techniques are crucial to the novels’ political astuteness. The books’ temporally disordered forms at once record the fragmentations and devastations visited on the colonial body and provide intimations of an alternative, erotic futurity in which those bodies will have been made whole.

Abstract:
Whereas infectious diseases are the scourge of developing countries, cancer is the most significant affliction in developed countries. At the beginning of 2005, the American Cancer Society announced that, for the first time, cancer had surpassed heart disease as the number one killer of Americans. Cancer, which is the uncontrollable multiplication of cells, has been in existence as long as animals have; evidence of cancers has been found in dinosaur bones. Cancers have also been found on mummies dating back 2,500 years. An operation to remove cancer was documented in the Ebers papyrus found in Egypt. In ancient times cancer was a relatively rare disease, because infectious diseases often made the life span so short that cancer had little chance to proliferate. Hippocrates (460–370 B.C.) coined the word cancer, which means “crab” in Greek. There are over 110 types of cancer, which can be divided into four categories depending on the tissue involved: carcinoma, lymphoma, leukemia, and sarcoma. Carcinomas are the most common, with 85–90% of all cancers falling into this category. Carcinomas are tumors that originate in epithelial tissue such as skin, breast, lung, prostate, stomach, colon, ovary, and so forth. Lymphomas are cancers of the lymphatic system. Leukemia is the cancer of the blood, bone marrow, and liver. Sarcomas, the rarest of all four types, are tumors arising from cells in connective tissue, bone, or muscle. It seems inconceivable that we had almost no clue about the origin of cancers up until the mid-1970s, despite the existence of cancer that predates human life. The debate raged on as to what caused cancer, with one camp believing that carcinogens (cancer-causing agents such as chemicals, X-ray, and ultraviolet light) were to blame, whereas the other thought that viruses were the culprits. The carcinogen theory took root first. As early as 1775, British doctor Percival Pott made the astute epidemiological observation that young English boys employed as chimney sweeps were more prone to develop scrotal skin cancers than their French counterparts. Further scrutiny revealed that the continental sweeps bathed more frequently after work, which prompted Pott to speculate that long exposure to coal tar caused skin cancer. In 1915, 140 years later, Katsusaburo Yamagiwa and Koichi Ichikawa confirmed Pott’s theory in an animal model.

Abstract:
Abstract Decoding Business Dynamics: A Comparative Analysisand Theoretical Implications details a comparative analysis and decodes business dynamics of all the organizations under study, from various perspectives that serve the concerns of the book’s thematic approach. The print giants have been lined up sequentially, to be compared and contrasted upon essential parameters that seek to holistically recap the major aspects covered by the author. The bases for comparison range from the incipient genesis of these organizations to the current business models of growth followed by them. The author first begins by discussing the story behind how each newspaper was conceived. While those like Hindustan Times, The Hindu, The Indian Express, and Dainik Jagran were born out of efforts steeped in the national freedom struggle, The Times of India originated to cater especially to the British business class. Further still, Dainik Bhaskar was an entity that only emerged after India won independence. Closely associated with each organization’s origin story is the strategic intent behind launching them, which is what the author compares next. Chronologically tracing the values upon which the foundation of each newspaper is built sheds light on the changing visions of the companies with time and market environments. In the same breath, the visionary leadership and changing ownership patterns of the mentioned organizations are elaborated upon, thereby crediting the developments in each paper’s lifeline to the astute personalities responsible for them. The manner in which the ownership history of any company affects its functions will be simultaneously examined. Since the strength of any newspaper is shaped by its editorial clout, the author enlists the legendary editors that brick-by-brick etched out an identity for each paper, and how their editorial policies weighed the respective organizations’ popularity among Indian audiences. Product development and diversification is essential to any product’s shelf life. This basis of comparison observes how each product, in this case, each particular newspaper, has committed itself to constant growth, by branching out into multiple editions and supplements across genres. Credit has also been given to the newspapers for the development of product layout, design, and consumer-centrism in their pages. Following the various product trajectories, the author continues on to discuss the broader aspect of the companies’ business development and diversification from print into multiple verticals like radio, television, digital, and marketing solutions. Enunciating this angle is key to realizing the gigantic status of these organizations, as emphasized in the title of the book. Under the umbrella of business strategy, the companies’ development pertaining to their various mergers, acquisitions, takeovers, and strategic alliances is looked into, giving an insight into the necessity of collaborative relationships in the industry for survival. By then mapping the market expansion, geographical spread, regional penetration, and international footprints of each company, the author brings the reader back to on-the-ground realities pertaining to the Indian demographic, its acceptance of the products these organizations have given it, and the organizations’ mutual readiness to aggregate their own popularity by navigating these trends. The financial analysis of every organization is meant to reflect the consolidated sum of the success they have achieved, connoting the same through hard numbers for a clearer understanding. A review of the companies’ finances will also highlight the growing movement of mass media into commerciality, preparing the stage for the next point under question. An analysis of the business dynamics of growth strategies followed by each of these giants will proffer the reader a holistic understanding of the bedrock upon which the companies’ core policies lie. This will additionally reveal the companies’ management approach and simultaneously hint at the evolution of their strategic intents. Conclusively, the chapter also tracks the timeline of technological advancements in these organizations, giving weight to the procurement of print machinery and the potential the future holds in the wake of the technological revolution.

Abstract:
The ASTRID (Assessment of Source Term for Emergency Response based on Installation Data) process model is used for the faster than real-time prediction of the radioactivity released into the containment and further into the environment in case of an emergency situation in a light water reactor. Combined together with the containment module COCOSYS the model can predict the entire radioactivity release chain from the primary system to the containment and further into the environment. In the paper the ASTRID thermohydraulic module PROCESS is presented shortly. The thermohydraulic part is a fast running solution for the drift-flux based thermohydraulics. In high temperatures the core degradation leading to the melt pool formation in the reactor barrel and reactor vessel lower head is calculated in the in-vessel module RELOMEL. Finally after the reactor vessel wall has been eroded due to the molten corium in the lower plenum, the massive radioactivity release occurs into the containment. But even before this scenario the radioactivity may be transported from the superheated core to the containment by the coolant. The reference plants for the development have been the Westinghouse type 4-loop PWR, the French type 3-loop PWR, The German type 4-loop Konvoi PWR, the Loviisa VVER type PWR, and the Olkiluoto type internal pump BWR. The reference code for the DBA thermal hydraulics has been the SMABRE code. In the developmental assessment the capability of the rough nodalization of ASTRID has been tested against the SMABRE nodalization describing the plants with 50–500 nodes. For the developmental assessment of the in-vessel severe accident the sample cases are calculated with MELCOR. The more thorough validation is based on the internationally known system codes, RELAP5, MELCOR, CATHARE and ATHLET. In the validation the most problematic area is the radioactivity transport into the containment. This part of the validation is done with the integrated code system.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper presents the results of a theoretical analysis of dynamic valve timing on the performance of a multistage peristaltic vacuum micropump. Prior work has shown that for optimum steady state performance a fixed valve timing which depends on the operating pressure can be found. However, the use of a fixed valve timing could hinder performance for transient operation when the pump is evacuating a fixed volume. At the beginning of the transient the pump operates at low pressure difference and a large flow rate would be desirable. As the pump reaches high vacuum the pressure difference is large and the flow rate is necessarily small. Astle and coworkers1–3 have shown using a reduced order model that for steady state operation short valve open time results in lower inlet pressure and flow-rate and conversely. Here we extend the model of Astle and coworkers to include transient operation, multiple coupled stages and non-ideal leaky valves, and show that dynamic valve timing (DVT) reduces the transient duration by 30% compared to high vacuum pressure valve timing. The results also show a significant reduction in resonant frequency of the pump at low pressures, and quantify the effect of valve leakage.

Abstract:
ASTRID is a project for an industrial prototype of a 600 MWe sodium cooled Fast Reactor, led by CEA. An important program is in progress for the development and the validation of numerical tools for the simulation of the dynamic mechanical behavior of the Fast Reactor cores, with both experimental and numerical parts. The cores are constituted of Fuel Assemblies (of FA) and Neutronic Shields (or NS) immersed in the primary coolant (sodium), which circulates inside the Fluid Assemblies. The FA and the NS are slender structures, which may be considered as beams, form a mechanical point of view. The analysis of the dynamic behavior of tubes bundles immersed in a dense fluid is a major challenge in the nuclear industry (reactor cores, steam generators). In some cases, the excitation is given by the fluid flow, with a complex behavior which may lead to instabilities. The paper only considers the case of an external excitation (earthquake or shock). The fluid leads to two main effects: “inertial effects” with lower vibration frequencies and “dissipative effects” with a higher damping. In the general case the fluid has to be described by the Navier-Stokes equations. It is possible to use the Euler linear equations in the case of vibrations of the tubes in a globally stagnant fluid. In all cases the modeling of the system could lead to huge numerical problems if each tube is described explicitly. Homogenization technics allow to limit the size of the problem. Homogenization methods taking into account the Euler equations for the fluid have been developed, and widely used for analyses of the dynamic behavior of reactor cores. Only the inertial effects are theoretically described but the dissipative effects may be roughly taken into account by using a Rayleigh damping. The paper presents an improvement of the method, allowing a better description of the dissipative effects, with a more general form of the expression of the forces exchanged between the fluid and the tubes. The theoretical basis of the numerical model are presented, as well as illustrations of the interest of the method: a better physical description is obtained for the dynamic behavior of the tubes bundle, particularly in the case of interactions with free fluid, without tubes.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to improve the knowledge about the core behavior of a sodium fast breeder reactor (Na-FBR) through the fluid-structure interaction analysis during vibrations of short time scale (shutdown of Phénix reactor) as well as long time scale (earthquakes for ASTRID Project). We designed a test-rig, PISE-1a, composed by one hexagonal assembly enclosed by an hexagonal containment with a narrow gap. The experimental test-rig PISE-1a is used to determine the dynamic characteristics of the assembly, to calibrate instrumentation and for validating our numerical model. Free vibration experiments in water allow to assess the added mass and added damping effect on the frequency. The fluid flow is affected by a 3D effect — named down-stroke flow — at the top and the base of the assembly. This effect produces a higher frequency than the 2D theoretical value. Investigation on this phenomena are provided by PIV methodology, which allows to show the displacement of the fluid as predicted by the theoretical analysis.
