Full textThe associative movement is a significant component in the evolution of Reunion Island’s political life between 1958 and the end of the 20th century. The analysis of the birth of associations and their actions reveals their growing role in local political life. It also points out rhythms that are specific to the life of associative movements. Hence it is of interest to place this associative life back in the framework of the political history in order to reveal the richness, the diversity and the effect of the associations’works. In the first decade, associations and their supporters undergo the violent political confrontations opposing the U. N. R. And the P. C. R. . Between 1969 and 1975, the relationships between the political world and associations change. A new generation, more consensual, turns away from clashes. As a result there is a greater respect for democratic practices in political life and the associations quickly expand their activities. The end of the 70’s is a turning point for the acknowledgment of Reunionese identity and history. Likewise, air transport is democratized and political life is renewed: associations are the driving force of this evolution. From 1984, as the regional power grows, so does the Cultural, Educative and Environmental Council, whose prerogatives broaden. The associative world, now collaborating with the new political institutions through the C. C. E. E. , launches the revival of education, cultural diversity, secularity, women s empowerment, and outreach to Indian Ocean partners

Full textDespite its undeniable and numerous assets. Reunion Island, which is both a French department and a tropical island in the Indian Ocean, has turned belatedly to tourism. Becoming aware of the reliance of the impact of tourism on an economic scale, the island has been developing this activity in order to answer to one of its main socio-economical need, the problem of unemployment. Many touristic and leisure activities have flourished during last years. However, in spite of the progress made in this field, there is not a real and global touristic project. "Blue tourism" (beaches, sun and sea) to "green tourism" (mountains and the inland sites), the island is trying to offer different aspects of its possibilities. The development of its assets, hindered by the geospatial imbalance of the island, in order to become real and strong touristic products must be promoted by the local population if the aim of welcoming half million tourists in a well balanced and harmonious way. In the year 2000 wants to be reached. Much effort has still to be continued to attain a well controlled and diversified range of touristic products in Reunion Island

Full textHow could the place where people live have a part in promoting (improving) or deteriorating their health ? The researcher analyse health socio-territorial constructions on La Réunion island. He tries to bring together the backdrop corresponding to the populations' "environnent", which would explain how, beside social or individual characteristics, risk exposure can be influenced by living locations. Local health constructions appear to be, in each location, specific combinations of all aspects of "the environnent", term including numerous and varied aspects of life (ecological and biological data, social and family relationships, health services supplying) which surrounds and "deterrnines" populations' health. Two quarter comparative monographs (exploration of the conditions of social relationships within the districts, the spatial representations and practical experiences, social and health support authorities appropriation modes, localized active and passive treatment methods) shows processes that are firmly-rooted and filled in a territorialized daily /ife, through which the inhabitants' health builds up or worsens

Full textThis research deals with the way the different constructions of the identity in Reunion island, particularly through the expression of their discursive representations, encourage the emergence of the "reunioneese" complexity and the ways of management which are set up to make its existence bearable. The exploration of the definitions of identity has confirmed its position at the junction of human sciences. It is art first at the light of historical, socio-economic and linguistic backgrounds that this research has picked out a first reading level of the "reunioneese" identity. From the analysis of the content and of the discourse, the originality of this essay is to show the way the complexity of the pluriethnical, pluricultural reality and of the integration is organized. This study shows how these different representations of identity are elaborated either on the mode of idealisation or as a discursive compromise to deal with the antagonisms. The melting pot, the violence. . . More over, these constructions of identity represent the cognitive means to cope with the personal, indeed peculiar engagement in the social insular complex and dynamic situations where modernity and third-world live together. The social and also individual representatioins actually call on the signifiant material of the language and contribute to bring about a very precarious link between the different and numerous functions of the identities and the representations that are specific to the process of individual identifications which underlie them

Full textBiofuels become, in more and more countries, the environmentally friendly solution against the prospect of the reduction fossil fuels. Nevertheless, one must know that the production of ethanol generates an important amount of highly concentrated organic liquid wastes. We examine different options of waste management. Then, we focus on deep-well injection as a possible solution in the case of the Distillery of Savanna, located at Bois Rouge, La Réunion, Indian Ocean. Under 80m of silty alluviums, the confined volcanic aquifer as target for injection is relevant. We find that clogging appears, due to suspended solids and to biological activity. We suggest that leakance explain the lack of influence on the observation wells. We also show that aquifer's characteristics have a transient behaviour, depending on the flow rate. Numerical simulations give a travel time of 4 years until the discharge into the ocean, where ecological surveys attest a highly positive influence on benthic fauna

Full textThe Reunionese musical scenery is constituted from three mains musicals genres : the sega, the maloya and the variety song. Differents fonctions correspond to these genres. This differenciation of fonctions goes along with distinction of musical forms, thematics and linguistics shapes. The use of differencies linguistics variety was then out standing and representative of the reunionese linguistics practive. This differentiation are still more symbolics at this actuel day and work like identities markers as the tendency to interbreading causes in the acts a fusion of genre. So, the distriution of the linguistics variety according to the genre is no longer so obvious. We will dismiss however the hypothesis of a linguistic as well as musical decreolization in spite of the undopted influence that french language exert over the creole and that foreign musics exert over reunionese music today

Full textIn spite of the narrowness of the Reunion Island (2510 km²), there are some very remarkable regional disparities. During the colonial period, the Lowlands were differentiated from the Plains and costal slopes which were in turn differentiated from agricultural plantations in the Highlands, and the sparsely populated mountainous interior with an economy of subsistent farming. From 1946, the departmentalisation of the island brought about a huge development of the tertiary sector and a significant increase in population growth resulting in fast and massive urbanisation. The North and North-western parts of the island consisting of saint-Denis, the capital and Le Port represent the dominant "centre", leaving the rest of the island as the outskirts. Their development has overlapped onto the west coast tuning it to into residential and seaside resort. The three southern towns of Saint-Louis, Le Tampon, and Saint-Pierre are trying to build "a second centre" that will spread out over the South. In contrast, the Highlands, "les Hauts" and the Southwest form the rural outskirts/periphery whose development is slow whilst the Eastern plains (Saint-André/Saint-Benoît) or the coastal regions of Petite-Ile/Saint-Joseph are in the intermediate position. In light of these disparities and the important economic and demographic growth, traffic is a big problem and a competition for space - a rare commodity - as well as the environmental impact it has. There disparities are not quite curbed in spite of the existence of a regional development plan of the Highlands. Big projects are reserved for the reinforcement of the Northern and north-western metropolitan regions. An aggressive regional development plan of the territory is inseparable from Reunion Island's new project of durable development. The aim of this project is to bridge the territorial gap, to manage a restrained space in a thrifty manner and to foresee the consequences of global warming

It wonders about the effects standardizing of the tourist paradigm of mass. Calling upon an interdisciplinary and intercultural approach, this study is based on the concepts of local and durable development, like on the theory of the symbolic sites. His decoding, rises the concept of tourism located mobilizing the multiple identities from the tourists and the receiving mediums. The tourist situation in France illustrates the relevance of tourism integrating the participation of the local actors. The empirical case of “La Réunion”, explored here, confirms the topicality of the balanced and durable tourist steps. Tourism located brings a new lighting on the need for a diversification of the local tourist policies, entreating the risks of a standardization

Full textThis research is interested in the variety of aquatic relations on La Réunion island, a pluricultural space undergone by many conflicts about identity, and historically marked by metropolitan domination. More precisely, we'll view the differences and the similarities between two large cultural groups of people : Reunionians and French Metropolitans. As water isn't just a pure abstraction or an intimate disposition (Bachelard), it must be put back in situations. The concept of “aquatic situation” allows us to take different elements into account, such as natural, social, cultural elements. The theoretical angle mingles anthropology and sociology. Our data is based upon a series of observations and interviews. At first, the variety of aquatic practising and sensitivities are presented (ordinary, functional, utilitarian, sacred, risky, play, sporting, controlled, rationalized, contemplated water). Then, an interpreting even explicative system is put forward. If aquatic relations seem to be in conformity, even in consistency, with a global sociocultural context, the analysis at an individual level turns out to be unavoidable. A historical angle gives account of properties and dispositions, sometimes extremely numerous, which are likely to influence aquatic relations. A situational angle reminds us that the context is essential to understand the practising. The interaction between the actors' properties and those of situations can be at the origin of modifications of practising. Finally, a teleological angle shows how aquatic relations are the result of actors consciously or unconsciously motivated by distinctive and/or identity concerns. Aquatic practising and situations can be considered as “symbolic ressources” in struggles to impose or protect a social order

Full textThe main originality of the society from Réunion lies in the diversity of the people involved in its population and in the cultural intersectings that ensued from it; the dynamics of the creolization continue today and make cohabit in a complex way unity and heterogeneousness. Because it is the support of the process of socialization and of the construction of the identities, food habits constitute a privileged access road to apprehend the cultural organization of this Creole society. The research leans on an approach mobilizing in a complementary way the survey thanks to questionnaires, interviews and observation. It allows to make people aware of the complexity of the identity process that underlie the creolization, thus confirming the idea according to which food is a first rate place of reading of those phenomena. But the most striking result lies in the bringing up to date of its founding part in the organization of the living together within this multicultural society

Full textSince the departmentalization in 1946, Reunion knew a development without precedent, in particular an urbanization which was done gradually, currently characterized by an articulation of rural and the urban one. Moreover, the population becoming increasingly numerous caused immediate a greater consumption. Consequence of our way of life, domestic waste does not cease growing and their rejection in the environment becomes a crucial problem; they thus became omnipresent and their treatment poses problems. The project of creation of an installation of elimination such as a factory of incineration of waste causes true general outcries on behalf of the reunionnais inhabitants and local councillors. The nimby syndrome gains the population. The reinforcement of the European standards aiming at allowing a better controlled management of the waste processing seems an additional burden. Thus, the installation of the laws stated and enacted by the European Union apply on a local scale but fit with difficulty insofar as they do not take into account the local constraints and specificities

Full textThe land, the whole of fitted and used land, is in the dead of the current events in Reunion society. The penury of land entails a strong unsuitability between needs of society and capacities of land to satisfy them. The consequences, which derive from this depression situation, result at first time in land speculation which make very difficult the access to the accommodation for middle class and working class on the one hand and on the other impede economic activity (unemployment rate very high). At that, we have to add the strong urban pressure which is exerted on farm land and on natural zone present in Micro-region sud and in Reunion Island. We witness at a fall of farm land (in area) which reflect in economic farm in one way harmful. Micro-region sud and Reunion Island, in general, are at the turn of their history on a level with country planning; the radicals and innovative decisions will be taking

In addition to be the focus of ecology and protection, coral reefs concentrate socio-economic issues which play a predominant role in small island contexts. It is the case of Reunion island, where the coastal reefs take place on only 12 % of the total coast perimeter but are of an importance for economical activity and for inhabitants welfare distinctly above their size. . Human activities developed on coral reef costal zones damage the resources from which they benefit. This alarming situation imposes to set up appropriate management policies to strive for sustainable development. In this prospect the main points are: Identification, valuation and comprehension of the reefs functions and socio-economical issues. It is not the matter to estimate the monetary value of the coral reef but to study its socio-economical wealth, study which is no more only economical but intends to be a more extensive subject and for its comprehension geography has a predominant part

Full textThe native ecosystems of the Mascarene islands are characterized by a high endemicity (72% of the Angiosperm flora) and habitat destruction due to human activities and invasions by introduced animal and plant pests. More than 98% of the primary vegetation remnants on the archipelago are found in La reunion, which also possesses more protected forest areas. Ligustrum robustum subsp. Walkeri (oleaceae) is one of the worst alien invasive plants of Mauritanian native forest and has been introduced recently into La Reunion. The recorded data from sample plots near the first site of introduction in La Reunion (Cilaos, 1200 m alt. ) showed pure stands of L. Robustum in the human-disturbed primary forest patches and high seedling densities in the least disturbed patches. Its rapid growth rate, high shade tolerance, high production of seeds able to be dispersed by birds, contributed to its ability to invade forests. Difficulties in controlling L. Robustum make it a major threat to the indigenous montane forests. Without setting up an efficient conservation program improving the awarness of the local population, other species could be introduced that will display similar invasive characteristics. This could accelerate the process of degradation that is occurring following the introduction of L robustum. This process poses a serious threat to one of the last primitive island ecosystems in the Indian Ocean

This study focused on the competitive interactions among these three species and on the factors linked to their invasive success. These ants coexist in lowland anthropogenic habitats: P. Megacephala and S. Geminata were the two dominant species, the densities of their colonies varying with the climatic conditions, whereas A. Gracilipes was rare. They have never been observed in the sampled forests: the importance of the environmental conditions on the dominance of these invasive ants could explain this result. However the low ant species diversity in these habitats provides a niche opportunity for some other invasive ants

Full textIn the reunionese society, marked by the systems of slavery, then enlisting and, eventually the status as a french , the diachronic study on the choice of a spouse enables to highlight the way this society grounded on a violent disintegration of the individuals, as well as of the system of family ties formerly in force in the different original social groups became structured on the basis of different matrimonial practices. The particularity of those practices, when choosing a spouse lies in the importance given to the geographical nearness at the expense of the ethnical endogamyor of the social and religious homogamy. This research, which is based on an exhaustive survey of actual marriages in a town on the west coast of the island, first aims at evaluating the reality of an ancient family structure which was already underlying at the time of slavery. Its second aim is to throw into relief the relevant elements in the making of couples. The high incidence and the persistence of a choice unrelated to the ethnic group seem to be, among the various groups of immigrants, elements which have given birth to the particular and linguistic formations that are a characteristic feature of the reunionese society. Similary, the irrelevance of racial or colour criteria for the choice of a partner, beyond the variety of talk and the ideological assumptions, sets the studied society apart from other creole and island areas

Full textThe turning out of reunion island statute from a government colony to a French overseas department in 1946 was seen as a major event, politically, historically and above all culturally speaking. Indeed from then on, the island became part and parcel of France and consequently French citizenship was granted to a multi-ethnic people sharing all the same language in every day life, that is to say Creole which developed from various backgrounds. The geographical location of Reunion Island makes it a land of utmost importance from a geostrategical point of view. Thus the local government never fails to enhance patriotic feelings as regards the mother country i. E. France. However, it seems that the awareness of a Reunionese identity is irreversibly being developed and strengthened. Mass media have become highly important in the cultural changes that followed. However, the process of media transcription is more often misapplied for various reasons, and, on the whole when compared to the mother country, Reunion Island means of communications tend to be worlds apart

Nonetheless, the ancestral link to land is not broken and complex connections between agriculture and territory remain. Theses connections create new “ruralities” which weaken agriculture on territories. Reunion Island has been shaped by colonial plantation economy. Today its agricultural seaside is under urban pressure while its “heights” are marginalized. This dichotomy is emphasized by strong agricultural industries settled in the low parts of the Island as for the “heights” struggle impulsing a reflexion on rural development. Agriculture and rurality are strongly divided. The impact of agriculture on territories is not taken into account in the main debates. The agricultural depression of the “Heights” deepens the gap between the assisted and the ones who benefit from touristic development even if the farmers are encouraged. Seaside urbanisation threatens the agricultural industries therefore the local authorities are sollicitated for land regulation. Agricultural charter planification is issued from these two views. It tries to go beyond the oppositions in order to gain territorial efficiency. It also encourages innovation, linking agriculture and territories. Agriculture will subsist only if it questions the existing model and tries to created this new link. This is the price to pay for sustainable development on the Island. The searcher has the tools to build this perspective

Full textThis study is a sociological approach to homosexuality in Réunion island. The observations and interview methods allow foran initial inventory of the context. Due to the lack of a real homosexual community, the results of this study demonstrate how threatened identities are building up. This results alsosuggest different forms of compromises the protagonist have recourse to in order to conciliate their sexuality and the normative pressure emphasised by insularity and creole identity

Full textThis research is a psychosocial approach of the relation between school and family in Reunion Island. It concerned in parents' and teachers' social representation of the school in a multi cultural context. It fits in the theory of the central nucleus. The objective is to identify the contents and the internal structure of representation. The results show that social representation of school of all the respondees who are parents, whatever their origin and their statute, would be organized around two common elements: training and education. In addition, there is a convergence of opinions of the parents and the teacher-parents originating from Reunion Island, relating to significant questions in particular about discrimination at school, and inequality of opportunities regarding school. Values and common beliefs attached to education and instruction would be thus shared by parents and teachers, but perception that some have of the others is based on preconcieved ideas. This shift would be one of the explanatory factors of the dialogue difficulties between families and school

Full textDetailed geological study of the Salazie cirque, on Reunion Island, with additional information from the Mafate, Cilaos and Marsouins cirques, has resulted in a new interpretation of the volcano-structural evolution of the Piton des Neiges volcano. The construction of the shield volcano, from before 2. 10 to 0. 22 Ma began with the emission of voluminous lava flows of transitional character that progressively gave way to a silica oversaturated alkaline magma (basalt to quartz trachyte). A subsidence cauldron associated with a ring complex was formed in the central part of the volcano at the end of this stage. Between 0. 22 and 0. 15 Ma, extensive erosion of the shield volcano excavated the proto-Salazie and proto Marsouins cirques on the east flank of the volcano, coalescing with the cauldron. By 0. 18 Ma, a new eruptive cycle began the building of the stratovolcano with the eruption of silica undersaturated magma as ignimbrites and lava flows of basanitoid to trachytic composition. About 0. 07 Ma ago, a major extensional tectonic phase occurred, with the emission of silica oversaturated alkaline magma of hawaiitic to comenditic composition, from a shallow magma chamber. The most recent volcanic activity has been peripheral and scattered, with a variety of eruption mechanisms. In particular, two eruptive centers, on the edge of the graben, emitted lava flows and pyroclastic rocks until about 22,000 yrs B. P. . The study of secondary mineral parageneses has shown that, since about 0. 22 Ma, hydrothermal activity has always been closely controlled by tectonic structures. Each stage of cooling of the intrusions associated with the cauldron has been demonstrated, and study of the xenoliths in the ignimbritic breccias shows that concomitant fracturing has constituted a system of drains for hydrothermal fluids. The tectonic structures of the stratovolcano, in particular those related to the graben, have also acted as channelways for the circulation of medium and high temperature hydrothermal fluids. By comparison with active geothermal fields, the present existence of bicarbonate sodium chloride fluids and of acid sulphate fluids provides evidence of a geothermal aquifer
