Full textIn front of growing ecological concerns and widening social inequalities, what place do associations occupy? At the crossroads of the desire to “do things differently” and the constraints of the dominant economy, what does commitment to associative work produce? Which actors enchant associative work and for why? How does this enchantment impact the value of the work accomplished? Does enchantment operate on all social positions? When is this spell likely to break? To answer these questions, we conducted a qualitative survey, by participant observation and interviews, in ten recycling centers in order to understand the different ways of relating to this associative work within a sector which is currently being structured.Through this survey, we question the function of symbolic economies within an “economic economy” (Bourdieu, 2017), capitalist and neoliberal through the work carried out in associations. The high degree of abstraction of these questions does not distance us from the concrete and material dimensions of these issues. Therefore, the question of work remained the cornerstone of theoretical reasoning, its starting point, its markers, and its finish line. The thesis shows the growing mobilization of associations in the moralization of public problems. With the development of their role as “moral entrepreneurs”, they relay forms of individualizing responsibility, both in terms of ecological “awareness” and that of “activation” to employment. This moralization tends to make associative work invisible, which contributes to facilitating its devaluation and appropriation in the form of “avoided social and ecological costs” to the neoliberal state and businesses. The thesis also illustrates the way in which the lucrative private sector benefits from this moralization through a distatization and a commodification of general interest, which gradually allows it to claim a monopoly on symbolic capital. However, qualitative research has made it possible to bring to light reluctance as well as some attempts of resistance to these logics. While refraining from idealizing its weight and scope, it aims to fuel reflection in favor of a reappropriation of associative work by its workers

Full textThis PHD thesis analyses the personal care aid, especially as developed in non-profit organizations. The aim of the first part is to build the research object. The first chapter recounts the slow development of personal care aid as an activity sector. The second chapter shows the difficult conditions of` care work. The third chapter analyses why the law to develop home care services, changed the whole sector of personal care aid. The second part develops some "conceptual tools" to enlighten the problems shown in the first part. In chapter 4, three types of relationships that exist in this sector are conceptualized-like a triangle: the service relationship, the employment relationship, and the work p relationship. The relationships that appear in this triangle in the context of non-profitmaking organizations are analyzed in chapter 5, considering that they are part of` a system. The goal of the third part is to analyze the stakes and the development of the sector of` non-profitmaking organizations, taking into account the three identified relationships. The chapter 6 shows why the work and employment relationships are inseparable. The chapter 7 analyzes how specific the work and service relationships are in the non-profit organizations in the field of personal aid care. In a moving context, chapter 8 deals with the necessary balance between the different relationships

Full textThe Third Sector Structures have developed a form of Industrial Relations, linked to the Social Movement History; based on the evolution of different Cooperative groups; and adapted over the business cycle. This Relation System improves the well-being of individuals and Groups, it has evolved to suit social needs and to cover various risks. Abbé Pierre, founder of the Emmaus Movement has created a Structure providing supportive environment, social benefits and work for homeless people. This structure is similar to old forms of Charity and Cooperative structure, "Communities". It deals with old economic activities, those of "Ragpickers". Emmaüs Communities practice "Flexicurity" working policies. Indeed, they have staffs, volunteers, but also a third type of worker: the Companion. The Companion is both Social beneficiary and Worker in the structure that provides him Social benefits. Communities are both supportive and productive structures, dealing with Industrial and Welfare requirements. The comparison between France, Spain and the UK shows the evolution of Industrial Relations into the Communities, within different economical contexts. The Community’ Strategy evolves according to their positions on the Market. "The far, a Community is from Emmaus Movement’s Ideology, the more it adopts market principles". This flexibility determines the Career path of Companions. It conditions the Communities Welfare and Solidarity System

Full textThis thesis aims at exploring to what extent globalization, through its diversecomponents, impacts the health of European workers. In a first part, we expose the socio-economicconsequences of this multi-faceted phenomenon. In a second part, we show that internationalcompetition, one of the essential components of globalization, is a risk factor for non-skilledworkers. Nevertheless, individual and organizational factors are the most likely to explain mentaland physical disorders prevalence in the population as a whole. Globalization also implies newpractices linked to firms’ internationalization strategy, another component of globalization. Weunderline that workers must acquire the skills to stay attractive in a constantly changing worldand they do not find much support in their companies. In a third part, we show that globalizationenhances the surge of the service sector in industrialized countries. In addition, the leanmanagement is implemented in those sectors and competitive pressure increases. These changesimpact the way the work is performed. Within this context, the health of workers deterioratesbecause they are exposed to changing risk factors, among them: intense of work related tointerpersonal relationships. Finally, we find that the Corporate Social Responsibility comes as ananswer to improve workers’ health and as a consequence, firms’ social and financial performance

Full textThe effects of temporal factors on worker's behavior are analyzed for three classes of temporal conditions : temporal requirements of the task (machine-paced work, time sharing), variability of human functionning (circadian rythmicity), interactions between time of work and off-the-job life (especially concerning shiftwork). Worker's responses to time requirements implies coordination of analyses at three levels : precise identification of situation's parameters for temporal aspects but also for psychological functions ; evaluation of importance of performance as regard time criteria and cost associated to success ; strategies of regulation used by the subject according to the balance between risks of failure and workload. Furthermore analysis of the activity under time pressure must be conducted in the frame work of the global system including work and out-of-work activities. Also social meaning of work needs effective coordination between analysis of worker behaviorin the line of man-machine system-and analysis of worker motivation concerning the activity under temporal constraints. Systematic articulation of the frameworks of ergonomics and social psychology is necessary for the progress of research on workers' response to temporal factors in work situation

Full textThe nonprofit organizations (NPO), in spite of their diversity, have tried to find a unity and become a "sector". This has been realized in the early eighties. At the beginning they were only considered for their civil and social role. Now, they are valued for their economic activities and for their ability to create job opportunities. A long time is required for the transformation of unpaid activities into salaried jobs, and of a NPO into a firm. Those changes are not obvious, but the NPO follow specific patterns of employment and of working time which help for their evolution. They have also an ability to use hidden, local and human resources that they know how to use in a flexible way. In order to realize this change, they have to find external resources (private and or public foundings), to rationalize their way of working, to lead permanent activities, and to extend their field to an anonymous audience. . . But professionalized NPO cannot be a regular firm as it doesn't renounce to its initial aims
