Hinderaker, Amorette Nicole. "Leaving the Family: Exit from Totalistic Organizations." Diss., North Dakota State University, 2013. https://hdl.handle.net/10365/27138.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore how members exit totalistic organizations. Existing organizational communication research has treated employee membership in an employment institution as the universal organizational relationship. This study argues that certain organizational relationships are best understood not by the presence or absence of pay, however, but in relation to the extent of organizational reach into the member's life outside the organization. This study advances the notion that such totalistic organizations share important characteristics including value-based memberships, centrality of organizational values to the member's life, the involvement of primary relationships, and a requirement of organizational fealty. This study advances the study of organizational exit within this totalistic context. A microstoria narrative analysis was used to examine the exit narratives of members of both paid and unpaid totalistic organizations (police officers and firefighters: N = 50, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: N = 50) to gain a better understanding of exit from totalistic organizations. The findings of this study suggest several contributions to the study of organizational communication and exit. First, the findings of this study expand our definition of organizational memberships beyond current literature, which defines memberships based on payment. Second, consideration of totalistic exit challenges existing models of role/vocational socialization, suggesting that foundational values can originate from an organizational source. Third, the process of exit revealed by the narratives of this study suggests a view of exit that was unlike both current phasic models or considerations of volunteer exit. The process of exiting a totalistic organization was less linear and more prolonged than exit describe by existing literature, and was marked by deep personal doubts and fears. Finally, members of totalistic organizations described active concealment of both their decisions to exit, and the doubts about both the organization and the self that contribute to exit, suggesting a communicative pattern during the exit process that diverges from the expected announcement/exit phase of Jablin's (2001) model.

Abstract:
The voluntary sector has taken an important place in our contemporary societies. It is a topic of study for sociology. The increase of the collective, social and public sphere also makes of the association, a useful organization for the Civil Society and the Firm.Under various names, she was imperative to regulate occupations, jobs, businesses, commercial activities, products, markets and even firms. In the sector of Coffees, Hotels and Restaurants, the strategic potential of associations of support to the firm such as the Company of France’s Best Workers, the advertising cooperatives of the franchise networks, the Escoffier’s Followers, the Hospitality Modernization French Committee or the ACCOR Franchisees Federation is analyzed. Four groups of theories (sociological theories, theories of the nature of the association, Institutions theories and Organizations theories) allows to highlight its purpose and its utility to the firm. At the appropriate specificities of this type of organization corresponds an independent management approach which borrows from the management of the public and private affairs

Abstract:
This is an empirical study of a voluntary association with a view to interrogate the theories of civil society and participation and their practice. These theories came to dominate debate on African politics and democratisation following disappointment with structural approaches to development and democracy. Disenchantment with the state whose role was emphasised by the structural approach led analysts and technocrats to turn their attention to human agency; hence the salience of the idea of popular participation in the public domain, and preoccupation with the idea of strengthening civil society. This trend gained momentum after the 1989 fall of the Berlin Wall and demise of the communist block, and was accompanied by anti-statist sentiments on a global scale. Civil society organisations are seen as schools for democracy and agents of democratic consolidation, and are accordingly expected to perform two major tasks, namely instilling and disseminating a democratic political culture in and among participants and society at large, and promoting good governance. The aim therefore is to take advantage of the supposed intrinsic and utilitarian benefits of participation. As evident in a number of policy documents and legislation, the incumbent South African government embraces the idea of participatory democracy. However, not all analysts share this confidence in the capacity of civil society to perform these tasks. For some analysts public participation does not always have positive intrinsic benefits. Public participation may instead lead to a corrupted political culture deriving from the participants' attempts to survive in a public sphere characterised by manipulation and subtle political control, and it is civil society organisations lacking in organisational strength that are particularly vulnerable. The study revealed that unity between practice and theories of participation and civil society is a complex matter fraught with a number of ambiguities and contradictions. It revealed that though participation in the voluntary association in question does have educative benefits, those benefits do not extend to all the participants. In addition, the quality of that education is contingent upon a number of factors, some internal, others external. The internal and external factors reinforce one another. The internal factors pertain to the organisational dynamics of the voluntary association itself, and the external factors to the nature of the relationship between the voluntary association concerned and public authorities and other civil society organisations.

Abstract:
In this thesis, I seek to advance our knowledge about the factors that make people start and stop volunteer work, thus shedding light on the capacity of volunteering and voluntary associations to foster social cohesion. In particular, my goal is twofold: first, to reveal to what extent voluntary associations function as meeting places for people from different social backgrounds, and second, to assess the resilience of civic participation in the face of labor market experiences that might undermine such engagement. I make three core contributions to the literature on voluntary association involvement. First, I pay special attention to the organizational contexts in which volunteers are embedded. Second, I adopt a dynamic approach, analyzing decisions to start and stop volunteering. Third, I attempt to disentangle alternative mechanisms that could drive the associations observed between volunteering and its potential determinants. Analyzing data from The Netherlands and the United States, my findings expose limits to the integrative capacity of voluntary association involvement. As it turns out, the civic landscape is strongly segregated. People tend to sort into voluntary associations where they mostly meet people with similar characteristics as themselves. Such sorting occurs along multiple social dimensions, including educational attainment, religiosity, gender, and ethnicity. This constrains the opportunities for building relationships that cut across existing social boundaries. Indeed, these sorting processes can reproduce in the civic domain fault lines that dominate other spheres of life. Furthermore, civic engagement and participation in the labor market are shown to be strongly intertwined, with the former breaking down when labor force exits occur. Voluntary association involvement is, therefore, of limited value for drawing labor force outsiders into public life. However, this chain of events does not necessarily unfold, as long as labor force outsiders retain aspirations to participate in social life.

Abstract:
College counselors today face increasing challenges, with fewer resources than in the past. Little has been known as to whether college counselors take advantage of resources and benefits available through involvement in professional organizations in these increasingly challenging professional times. College counseling center professionals in one state in the Southwest were surveyed regarding their professional organization involvement (N = 152). Participants were selected by targeting specific 4-year institutions with undergraduate populations and specific counseling professionals who work in college counseling centers within these schools. Most college counselors surveyed were involved in professional organizations, and involved in a variety of ways within these organizations. Many professional organizations catering to college counselors were identified. Specific motivations for involvement and hindrances to involvement were identified. In addition, no significant difference was found among the involvement of professional counselors versus psychologists.

Leist, Marilyn Thomas. "Increasing Stages of Social Activism and Responsiveness to the National Agenda: How Women Experience Membership in the American Association of University Women." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/30395.

Full text
Abstract:
The problem investigated in this study was how individuals participate in the local units of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and particularly how their participation relates to the program and policy initiatives of the national association. The purpose was to understand and describe how individuals experience branch membership, how they respond to the current program and policy initiatives of the association, and to examine some of the differences between members with regard to the salience of the initiatives. The research issues concerned why women join and retain their membership in local units, how they participate, and how they promote the program and policies of the national association. The grounded theory method was used to perform this qualitative study. Ten participants, in two branches, were interviewed. The interviews were transcribed, using The Ethnograph tool, and then open, axial, and selective coding was carried out to discern patterns and themes from the data. The findings, which emerged from the data, resulted in a model of four stages of increasing social activism and responsiveness to the national agenda. Attending to the mission of the association--to promote equity, lifelong education, and positive societal change--became increasingly important to some members as they moved through the stages. During the first stage, Participates, members simply attended meetings, took part in activities and fund-raisers, and some performed a branch role. During the second stage, Supports, they promoted education opportunities for specific women and girls, by setting up study groups, providing for local scholarships, or other educational activities. During the third stage, Facilitates, members actually promoted equity by disseminating information in the community concerning the association's issues. During the fourth stage, Advocates, members worked in the community to make changes based on issues from the national agenda. The conclusions addressed member motivation, the importance of the social capital built through participation, and the internal consequences of membership. While most women joined and retained their membership in the local units for social contact, some joined because of the organization's mission. Their motivation to join and retain their membership made a difference in their level and kind of branch involvement. The importance of the social capital built during participation in branch activities, often diminished, is of utmost importance to the usually, conservative members as some of them became more engaged in the activist, national agenda. The internal consequences of membership in the local units of the voluntary association were more important to members than the external consequences, which led to incongruence between the national office and the branches. This study adds to the body of knowledge regarding voluntary associations, particularly with respect to understanding how individuals experience membership at the local level, their goal orientation, and their motivation to participate over time.

Saitgalina, Marina. "The Mediating Role of Professional Membership Associations Through the Prism of Organizational Social Capital." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2014. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc699915/.

Abstract:
Civil society emphasizes the importance for citizens to be involved and developed in association with other people. The importance of socialization for citizens to learn civic values and develop virtues of tolerance and solidarity is generated by voluntary associations. Mediating structures are the entities that help to integrate disconnected elements of civil society and strengthen communities. Social capital is one of the elements that is actively utilized by mediating structures to connect people to, and get involved with others in mobilizing their efforts collectively for both public and private causes through volunteering. Traditionally only charitable nonprofits were perceived to be mediating structures. However, there are scattered examples of non-charitable professional membership 501(c)(6) associations engaging themselves and their members in social programs and community volunteering unaccountable for in the literature. Using the theories of mediating structures and social capital this research questions the assumption of limited applicability of mediating structures. Extensive empirical analysis of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) dataset is performed to determine how social capital and other organizational factors affect the performance of mediating roles by professional membership associations.

Abstract:
The use of social media in nonprofit professional membership organizations affects how leaders communicate with members, consumers, the community, and other stakeholders. The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore the social media marketing strategies that leaders in nonprofit professional membership organizations use to keep their organizations sustainable. Data were collected from 5 social media marketing leaders representing 5 nonprofit professional membership organizations in the Chicago region. Data collection occurred through semistructured interviews, review of organizational documents pertaining to social media marketing strategies, and review of the social media sites and websites of the participants' organizations. Rogers's diffusion of innovation theory served as the conceptual framework for this study. A thematic analysis of the data yielded 4 themes: social media platforms and engagement strategies, social media content, social media challenges, and brand awareness. Leaders of nonprofit professional membership organizations who want to gain a competitive edge by using the appropriate social media platforms, creating quality content, overcoming challenges, and increasing brand awareness might choose to align with the strategies identified in this study. The findings of this study could help organizational leaders use social media marketing strategies effectively for engagement and organizational sustainability. The implications for positive social change arising from the use of social media by leaders in nonprofit professional membership organizations include opportunities to connect with and engage the public to build stronger communities through collaboration.

Fitchett, Leah Lynn. "The Roles of Local Organizations in Collaborative Resource Governance: A Qualitative Case Study of Lake Associations." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/93405.

Full text
Abstract:
Human communities across the globe are currently facing an epidemic of lake water quality degradation, primarily resulting from resource and land-use decisions that introduce excessive amounts of nutrients into the lake system. In many of these communities, local volunteer groups called lake associations work to protect these cherished lake resources. Lake associations and similar groups commonly respond to issues that are most prevalent in their respective watersheds including, but not limited to, algae blooms, declines in water transparency, and fish kills. Yet, there is little research on the role these groups actively or potentially play in lake governance and management. This study investigates the specific structures and strategies lake associations use to address lake water quality challenges using a comparative case analysis of two organizations: Lake Sunapee Protective Association (LSPA; Sunapee, NH) and Clean Lakes Alliance (CLA; Madison, WI). I performed a content analysis of self-published newsletters, annual reports, and news publications mentioning either lake association, and supplemented this data with semi-structured interviews of key individuals from each organization. I characterized and compared the missions, capacity, and activity of the two case studies by applying a conceptual framework as a lens through which to better understand the function these groups serve in their communities and what makes them effective. I found that, although the two groups structure themselves differently, take on distinct activity pathways, and orient themselves differently with respect to lake conservation, they have both been effective in achieving decision-making or management outcomes. This is a first step in identifying the diversity of ways community-based conservation organizations, such as lake associations, can meaningfully contribute to collaborative environmental governance processes on the local scale.
Master of Science
Around the world, people who live on lakes are dealing with significant declines in lake water quality. These declines have been linked to various land management decisions, which can introduce excess nutrients to the lake system that promote excessive algal or bacterial growth, and to the ways people choose to use the lake resource, which can introduce non-native, or invasive, plant and animal species. In many lake communities, local volunteer groups called lake associations work to protect their local lake resources. Lake associations can respond to the specific problems facing their lake and act to manage the lake resource and the land around it. Yet, there is little research on the role these groups actively or potentially play in lake management and conservation. This study investigates the specific organizational structures and strategies lake associations and similar groups use to address water quality declines in lake communities. I collected historic documentation and completed oral interviews for two case study associations, Lake Sunapee Protective Association (LSPA; Sunapee, NH) and Clean Lakes Alliance (CLA; Madison, WI), to characterize and compare their missions, organizational capacities, and activities. This analysis allows me to better understand what makes these groups effective and the functions they serve in their communities. I found that, although the two groups are structured differently and implement different strategies to achieve outcomes, they both have been effective in achieving lake management and conservation outcomes in line with their respective missions. This is a first step in identifying the diversity of ways community-based conservation organizations, such as lake associations, can meaningfully contribute to local environmental management and conservation.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study examines some of the impacts of engagement by housing policy on housing associations in Wales. The research concentrates on: housing associations as voluntary housing organizations operating within the Wales voluntary sector; and, the relevance of policy implementation by Wales-national policy institutions for associations acting in this capacity. A background is developed through discussion of accounts of the voluntary sector that provide an insight into: definitional criteria and structural/operational norms for non-profit enterprise; the sector's societal function(s); operational frameworks (i.e. relevant to legal form, regulation, funding and accountability); and weaknesses that arise through the non-profit sector's reliance on government funding. In addition this study discusses aspects of the Wales voluntary sector distinct from the sector in the United Kingdom as a whole. An account is provided of the Wales voluntary sector and its role in public policy implementation, and the statutory framework supporting the sector's operation at Wales-national level. To establish a context for discussing housing associations in Wales there is a review of housing policy, focusing on the period post 1960, including a review of policy implementation in Wales. The primary research for this study is carried out on policy documents relevant to housing policy toward housing associations post 1989 (to include documents published by Tai Cymru as well as the National Assembly for Wales), and by a survey conducted on housing associations and local authorities. The findings from the survey provide insights into the relevance of housing policy and policy engagement on attitudes amongst relevant stakeholders toward housing association status within the Wales-voluntary sector, their role or roles, issues of accountability, and, the influence of Tai Cymru and the National Assembly in these areas. The survey also provides data from housing associations on the relevance and impact of policy implementation under Tai Cymru in three key operational areas, these are: development; rent setting; and, the allocation of housing. The primary research carried out allows conclusions to be drawn on the significance of housing policy implementation by policy institutions in Wales on housing associations having regard to their independence and capacity for operational discretion, and, of the relevance of accounts of the non-profit sector that highlight weaknesses arising from its engagement by public policy.

Mestrado em Biomedicina Farmacêutica
The patient associations assume a significant role in representing the patients’ rights, sharing information on the diseases, accessing the available resources, maintaining important interactions with other relevant stakeholders and facing challenges. These organizations provide an important support not only to the patients, but also to their families and friends, who are most of the times their direct caregivers. Currently, the patient empowerment has been highly discussed. This project aims to demonstrate in five different clinical disorders what are the motivations, the objectives, the activities, the involvement with other stakeholders and the challenges assumed by the correspondent patient associations. The result of this project allowed to conclude that the significant prevalence of chronic diseases has been introducing changes into the healthcare systems and national disease programmes. Simultaneously, the patients’ ownership has been increasing, contributing to a more participated role near the healthcare professionals and to a more conscious decision regarding the available therapeutics. Patient associations represent these patients and act in critical areas, such as, social, clinical, research, training, education and advocacy.

Abstract:
Nonprofit organizations have become a necessary staple in the lives of people and communities experiencing poverty. Many of these organizations provide services that they think their communities need. The solutions and services these organizations provide are incumbent on what the organizations think causes poverty. Although the motivations behind these organizations have good intentions, their approach to poverty could further jeopardize people and communities by not providing proper or necessary services that have the ability to help people get out of poverty. To explore how organizational values and perspectives on poverty are operationalized, I examined one nonprofit grassroots organization in Tampa Heights, Tampa, Florida. I applied the following four theories of poverty: individual, cultural, political-economic, and geographic to explain how participants discussed poverty in Tampa Heights. Interviews revealed that while many participants subscribed to multiple theories of poverty, each participant held one dominant view. This finding, among others, exposed the complexities of how individuals understand poverty as well as how nonprofit organizations approach these multifaceted issues. Thus, indicating the need for a clearer explanation of how and why people use these theories or combinations of theories to explain both causes and solutions to poverty.

Abstract:
Non-profit organizations always supported State’s expansion as intermediate bodies or partners of the public authorities for the implementation of social policies. Since the 1st of July 1901 law, non-profit organizations have benefited from a detailed and protective legal framework, later completed by a specific tax regime adapted to their non-profit status. The public authorities formerly granted aid to the voluntary sector until the combination of two factors forced them to change their strategy: the financial crisis of the 1980’s, then again in 2007 and the liberal European policies inciting fair trade with no State interventions. Policies of economic liberalization cut down public support compelling the voluntary sector gradually to turn to private funding and forcing it into a new world: the commercial sector. The danger for non-profit organizations is to lose their soul and their ability to innovate on social issues while developing a commercial way of management

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to examine media coverage of humanitarian organizations in Lebanon, based on the study of media productions of three organizations between 2009 and 2011. The first part highlights the evolution of humanitarian action, its objectives and its communication strategies. The art of rhetoric, image supremacy and human testimony contribute to the legitimization of the organization. The second part focuses on the means of rendering the association more visible. A thorough analysis of an association’s media productions reveals that the related framing put in place several processes to assert its identity, its mission and its religious and political engagement. The third part deals with different methods of the organizations’ attractions and their resonances within the written media. The study is conducted on the basis of visual, verbal and audio components of these media productions that trigger the mechanism of mirror neurons and identification with the victims. The analysis shows that the act of scenarizing humanitarian activities by the press causes a pathemisation of the public opinion resulting in the adherence to the association and to its political and religious beliefs

The events that took place in Ukraine during the past, led to a new look at the problems of our state. They are more and more beyond the cabinets of high politicians and become the property and care of ordinary Ukrainians. It must be admitted that today there is a big problem of distrust of Ukrainian society in the power, the court and in general the legal system of Ukraine, and public organizations and their representatives have a great authority, they listen to their opinions. In today's democratic society, the growing socio-political activity of citizens and their direct participation in the life of the state is the norm. According to Article 36 of the Constitution of Ukraine, citizens of Ukraine have the right to freedom of association in political parties and public organizations of Ukraine in order to exercise and protect their rights and freedoms and to satisfy political, economic, social, cultural and other interests. Public organizations are an integral part of civil society. They are voluntary associations of citizens, created for solving public problems and expressing common interests. In developed democracies, civil society organizations operate in all spheres of public life, make a significant contribution to welfare and sustainable development, and are an important factor in social and political life.

Abstract:
In recent times, sport's responsibility has grown beyond being only Sweden's largest people movement and activating people. Now sport is also expected to contribute to crime prevention and prevent other social problems. Using sport as a method and a kind of gear has in turn given sport other challenges. By using institutional theory, the study wants to highlight the working practices in which nonprofit organizations use in their own associations as well as with other organizations, to promote integration. The study is aimed at basketball associations in socio- economically vulnerable areas. To investigate this, a main issue was formulated and to answer it, two questions were formulated as an aid. An unstructured group interview was conducted consisting of four (4) respondents with different positions and active in sports in the socio- economically vulnerable areas. Four (4) semistructured interviews were also conducted with sports leaders in the basketball associations in the same areas. The results showed that cooperation between the association, school, the Swedish Basketball Federation, the municipality and the district is of utmost importance in the work of integration and other social problems. Different types of projects are also a common practice. The basketball associations generally have the same working practices with the organizations in the surrounding area with certain exceptions that occur within their own associations.

Abstract:
This thesis describes the non-profit sector in Czechoslovakia in 1945 - 1951 period. In this pivotal period, the independent non-profit organizations were partly revived during the post-war reconstruction, but they have been gradually limited by the state pressure, aiming to achieve their ultimate liquidation. This study examines the causes and transformation tools of the NGO sector until its abolition, as well as their subordination to direct government oversight. This work views the topic especially in terms of financial and managerial aspects of the organizations during this period. Due to the fact that this is an unexplored issue, the theoretical knowledge related to the topic is presented first, and the terminology and legislative developments of this type of organization are subsequently clarified. The practical part uses the example of three socially oriented associations: YMCA, Czechoslovak Red Cross and Charita (Caritas), their specific economic issues and the examples of contemporary management.

Abstract:
The presence of homeless people in the public space is an ancient social problem that the State has been attempting to solve for a long time. From the 90’s on - and especially after the enactment, in 1998, of the law fighting against social exclusion - government intervention has been embodied in a package of social measures under the umbrella term of “social watch” (“veille sociale”). Its implementation has been mainly entrusted to not-for-profit associations and charities, through delegation of public service programs. Among these measures, the mobile outreach programs describe the action of mobile teams given the mission to connect and engage with homeless people in the streets. The mobile outreach program constitutes the empirical subject of this thesis. The aim is to study this activity by taking into account the plurality of its actors - especially the not-for-profit associations - and the diversity of its contributors, both employees and volunteers as well as professional and non-professional social workers. Based on an ethnographic study led in Paris involving three different charity organizations, it combines participant observation and biographical interviews. The aim is to bring into view and clarify situations of inherent tension in this copresence of collective and individual actors through an analysis of mobile outreach programs as both places of work and social commitment. This analysis more generally enables an understanding of the dynamic boundaries within the field of social urgency, in which there are many persistant ambiguities. Ambiguities abound between social work and volunteering, public actions and private initiatives, between the prominence given to promote professionalism and the acknowledgment of altruistic dedication. The boundaries among these different missions remain vague and uncertain. An interactionist perspective inspired by the sociology of work and employment enables us to raise the issue of the main role played by the public authorities. They regulate the social outreach activity through multiple injunctions, notably with particular emphasis on professionalization and coordination of the mobile outreach program. The three different organizations that are the subject of enquiry take different approaches to those injunctions, whether in a relation of alliance or autonomy. The analysis of work divisions sheds light on the hierarchical division of labour as well as the question of how tasks are delegated. Social support and follow up missions are prioritised to professional outreach workers while responsibility for the less well considered missions such as food runs and distribution are handed over to the volunteer outreach workers. Observation of the different strategies of resistance towards this division reveal a struggle over jurisdiction – volunteer outreach workers equally want to be a part of the support and follow up missions and highlight what is at stake: the control of territory both physical and professional, as well as the mastery of knowledge which is essentially tacit and acquired through experience. By looking closer at volunteer outreach workers and their trajectories through the lens of sociology, the boundary between professional and volunteer can be seen to be an artificial one. First, by showing the overlap and hybridisation between the trajectories of volunteers and professionals: wage-earning outreach workers have a lot of the time practiced volunteering before, while on the other hand, some volunteers use the outreach programs as a way to enter the professional world of social work. Then by underlining the continuity in the way of seeing and practicing the activity that transcends organizations’ affiliations and status to better reveal the influence of different modes of socialization, be it through family, advocacy or work

Abstract:
This study analyses the possible impact of the European Union (EU) on the development of the relations between business interest groups and the government in Turkey, more precisely on the interventions of the business interest groups in domestic policy-making. Hence it deals with the links between the progress of the relationship between Turkey and the EU and the development of domestic interest group activity in Turkey.

The progress of Turkey’s relations with the EU enhanced the visibility of the Turkish Peak Business Organizations (PBOs) in representing Turkish business interests in Brussels. Moreover, the evolution of the activities of the PBOs, provides a broader understanding of the developments of the general characteristics of the relations between the government and business interest groups in Turkey. Hence the investigation focuses on the major Turkish PBOs.

We examine the relations of Turkish PBOs with the EU, essentially, on the basis of the observation of their transnational actions within the EU as well as their participation in financial and technical assistance programmes of the EU and in the joint institutional structures of the association regime between Turkey and the EU. By analysing these two dimensions we assess the repercussions of the socialization of the Turkish PBOs on their strategies of action in dealing with European Affairs, on discourses they adopted regarding domestic policy-making and on their organizational structure and policy agenda.

We elaborate our topic with reference to the Europeanization concept, which covers the examination of the consequences of the European governance on national systems. Through the Europeanization concept we observe the correlation between the progress of the Turkey-EU relations and the ongoing process of change in the patterns of interventions of the Turkish business interest groups in domestic policy-making.

Abstract:

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Non-profit organisations play an increasingly important role in our society as they often represent community interests. The ability of the non-profit sector to perform effectively has become more critical. In order to maintain their value and effectiveness they require continuous renewal. The increased demand placed on this sector as it partners with government to deliver basic services to the community has amplified the need for this renewal process. The non-profit sector is constantly required to develop new ways of building its capacity in an attempt to meet its challenges. Despite the emphasis placed on the importance of capacity building, the term itse~ is frequently too expansive to be meaningful to decision makers. This paper attempts to develop a working definition of capacity building and assess the capacity building levels of TB Care Association. TB Care Association, founded in 1929, provides a service to tuberculosis patients and their families. Over the last decade, the organisation has moved from being a welfare organisation to a developmental health promotion organisation. The survey conducted on TB Care Association indicates that the scores obtained by the organisation coincide with the organisation's stage of development according to Korten (Mukasa, 2003). The results further revealed that fund raising, over dependence on government funding, lack of succession planning and human resources strategies are potential issues that could impede organisational growth and development.

Abstract:
The type of innovation mostly adopted by European companies is management innovation. Some authors point out that management innovation provides the most sustainable competitive advantage. However, despite a recent revival of academic interest, management innovation remains much less studied in the literature than technological innovation. In addition, this emerging literature on management innovation has not focused on nonprofit organizations (NPOs). Yet, the nonprofit sector has experienced a strong growth so that it plays now a major economic role. NPOs have adopted management innovations to support this growth. The production processes in NPOs are strongly based on human and intangible inputs that are difficult to substitute for physical capital. Thus, management innovation which is also a process based on human and intangible inputs, appears like a type of innovation appropriate for NPOs. Moreover, the distinction between forprofit and nonprofit organizations has been explicitly presented as a great opportunity for the theoretical development on the innovation process. NPOs represent indeed a specific analytical framework. Therefore, this research aims to understand how a management innovation process is put in place within these particular organizations. The qualitative method of the embedded single case study has been appropriate to address this issue. The NGO “Action Contre la Faim”, which has been involved in a vast process of management innovation since 2008, has been investigated. The analysis and theoretical discussion of our results allowed us to shed the light on the specificities of the management innovation process in NPOs. Indeed, the management innovation process in an NPO is characterized by deliberately long phases and a mixed model that combines a bottom-up and top-down approach. First of all, the NPO takes all the time necessary to collectively create a consensual, weakly formalized and evolving management innovation. Then, the great malleability of management innovation leads to a long and non-linear implementation with a constantly flexible implementation without routinization

Abstract:
Between 2012 and 2013, the malian crisis had many dimensions. Beyond the immediacy of the event, this thesis seeks to identify the religious dimension of this crisis, including the impact of these events on the religious sphere in the capital. In Bamako, the Islamic associations are part of a relatively confrontational field polarized between "Sufism" and "Wahhabism". Many agree that these terms have to be deconstructed. This is what I try to do in developing the concept of "regime of orthodoxy". A “regime of orthodoxy”, it is this "tinkering" giving rise to a new religious movement, which eventually register, willy-nilly, in the case of Mali, in this polarity. However, this one is not less performative being renewed during this period. To many observers, the "Wahhabi" sphere has many affinities with jihadist ideologies and requires some vigilance. The "Sufi" sphere, meanwhile, has for international institutions many strengths that earned them the label of "moderate Islam." The "trace of God" is the brand (body, clothing, or discursive one) that allows the observer to identify the membership of such actor to such a trend, and to measure his radicality, or more generally his intention. This is the indicator on which rests the diagnosis that feeds ultimately what we can call a "security Reason"

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to study how a shared vision can emerge among the members of the entrepreneurial teams managing nonprofit organizations. We first examine the grassroots approach that emphasizes the collective action of volunteers and employees working together in the development of the association. We then consider social entrepreneurship literature focusing on the effective achievement of social goals. We integrate these two visions as two possible forms of entrepreneurship in nonprofit organizations. We identify the entrepreneurial team as a group of individuals working together toward the development of the objectives of the nonprofit organization and their achievement. We analyze how the different members of the team position themselves with regard to these two visions to analyze the risk of divisions, but also the possibility of the emergence of a shared vision. Adopting a socio-psychological approach, we conceptualize the notion of a shared vision in terms of social representations. We integrate the confrontation between these two representations as part of a cycle through which actors adjust their vision to fit reality. We then go on to study and explain how social entrepreneurship practices are introduced and develop within the entrepreneurial team of nonprofit organizations.Based on 48 semi-structured interviews and a full case study, the data collected contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms through which the shared vision emerges and evolves. Our research model highlights the distance between the ideal of the vision and the reality in practice. Between this ideal and the reality, operational and psychological processes are at work. Drawing on Weick (1979), when members of the entrepreneurial team are divided between two visions of their non-profit organization, the “retention” of one or the other is the consequence of managerial “enactment” rather than discussion

Hobart, Leigh. "The current context of Queensland primary teacher engagement with professional learning through professional associations." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 2009. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/46122/1/Leigh_Hobart_Thesis.pdf.

Abstract:
Engaging Queensland primary teachers in professional associations can be a challenge, particularly for subject-specific associations. Professional associations are recognised providers of professional learning. By not being involved in professional associations primary teachers are missing potential quality professional learning opportunities that can impact the results of their students. The purpose of the research is twofold: Firstly, to provide a thorough understanding of the current context in order to assist professional associations who wish to change from their current level of primary teacher engagement; and secondly, to contribute to the literature in the area of professional learning for primary teachers within professional associations. Using a three part research design, interviews of primary teachers and focus groups of professional association participants and executives were conducted and themed to examine the current context of engagement. Force field analysis was used to provide the framework to identify the driving and restraining forces for primary teacher engagement in professional learning through professional associations. Communities of practice and professional learning communities were specifically examined as potential models for professional associations to consider. The outcome is a diagrammatic framework outlining the current context of primary teacher engagement, specifically the driving and restraining forces of primary teacher engagement with professional associations. This research also identifies considerations for professional associations wishing to change their level of primary teacher engagement. The results of this research show that there are key themes that provide maximum impact if wishing to increase engagement of primary teachers in professional associations. However the implications of this lies with professional associations and their alignment between intent and practice dedicated to this change.
