Full textThis research analyses the pedagogical conception of the policy model of restriction and deprivation of liberty implemented by the Association for the Protection and Assistance of Sentenced Persons (APAC), which calls itself educational, and whose purpose is to verify if it is a new model or a sophistication of the traditional one. In order to study this model, which intends to have reduced the recidivism from more than 40 thousand people to less than 20%, a bibliographical research has been conducted to deepen the knowledge of the traditional model of prison, focusing then on the specific situation in Brazil. Subsequently, the APAC model has been studied through the inspection of the texts describing it and the review of the research literature in Brazil and Italy. Finally, a participatory observation has been carried out thanks to an ethnographic method in two of the units of the model, using the field diary and the open and semi-structured interviews, conducted to analyse the practices. We have drawn a comparison between the practices and the discourses about the model and, finally, we have compared it with the traditional prison model. The potentialities of that space, which is other than prison and which supports the educational projects of people deprived of liberty, were analysed and highlighted, as well as the weaknesses resulting from underfunding. In this way, it was observed that another education is possible for the prisons, but also that there is still the risk that it will have limited effectiveness in facilitating the return to society, given the structural limitations due to the insufficient work opportunities offered to people who return to freedom.
BRESSAN, NOEMI. "ADELE BONOLIS. LA FORMAZIONE, LA SPIRITUALITA', LE OPERE." Doctoral thesis, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, 2022. http://hdl.handle.net/10280/119449.
Full textThis dissertation focuses on Adele Bonolis (Milan, August 14th, 1909 – August 11th, 1980). It critically reconstructs her formation and spirituality, and the social welfare work that she initiated in the second half of the twentieth century. In the context of Milanese Catholicism’s events and Milan’s welfare system in the last century, the dissertation analyzes the religious and cultural formation that Adele Bonolis gained through her experience within the Catholic Action and at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore. The dissertation considers the foundation project of the Aralde dell’Amore – a consecrated community of women in the world – and the teaching activity that she conducted starting from her university years. Subsequently, the dissertation examines her social welfare work aimed at particularly fragile situations, especially for women, in the fields of prostitution, prison, and mental illness. Thus, the work takes into account the political and cultural debate of the time and highlights the rehabilitation method she adopted. Lastly, the dissertation studies the Associazione Amicizia that Bonolis founded in the Sixties and dedicated to support her initiatives. The outcome highlights the originality of Adele Bonolis’ answers to outstanding problems of her time in relation to the spiritual and cultural path that marked her existence.
TRAPANI, MONICA. "La pena perpetua: ergastolo e prisión permanente revisable." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10281/241189.
Full textIn a constitutional state, it is necessary to criminally sanction offenders and to protect society from socially dangerous subjects. This aim must be reached with rigorous respect for their dignity as human beings, whose protection is an essential and mandatory aspect of modern European Constitutions and International Conventions. The fulfilment of this purpose is performed by granting respectable life conditions to the prisoner during detention, but it also entails the implementation and development of rehabilitation. The latter relies on recognizing the capabilities of human beings to improve, and it is aimed at increasing the probability that the inmate, once returned to society, can live without committing crimes. Based on these premises, a reflection is hereby offered on life imprisonment, a punishment which neutralizes the author confining him between the walls of a prison for endless detention. It is, therefore, appropriate to question the requirement and the possibility of balancing this sanction with the rehabilitative function of the punishment. The Italian regulatory regime of "ergastolo" and the Spanish one of "prisión permanente revisable" are taken into consideration. In Italy, life imprisonment was chosen in place of the death penalty after the abolition of the latter. After the promulgation of the Constitution, it evolved in two opposite ways. In the first 30 years, with the development of the rehabilitative conception of penalty, legal devices were introduced allowing even the lifer to gradually regain freedom. However, with the rise of terrorism and organized crime in the early '90s, a new interpretation of this punishment called "ergastolo ostativo" was created, which deprives the prisoner of the possibility to benefit from these legal devices until he chooses to cooperate with justice. On the other hand, Spain has always set long-term custodial sentences at the top of its penalty system. Only in 2015, after a progressive hardening of the prison regulation, the perpetual penalty was introduced in the form of "prisión permanente revisable". Spain too has introduced a distinguished and stricter set of penitentiary regulation for terrorists and members of organized crime. Despite different historical evolutions, both countries adopted the most severe form of life imprisonment to oppose the social danger represented by the authors of serious crimes. Thus, the analysis of both regulatory regimes allows questioning about the alleged inalienability of this sanction, in light of the imperative protection of human dignity, set forth by the respective Constitutions and by the European Convention on Human Rights.

Full textViolence against women is known to be a worldwide emerging issue. In fact, 1 in 3 women throughout the world experience physical violence and/or sexual violence by a partner (WHO, 2013). 2 million women in Italy deal with severe poverty (Istat, 2016) and 6 million deal with physical violence (Istat, 2015).All these factors may also influence parenting, the ability to promote and support physical, emotional, social, economic and intellectual development of a child (Bornstein M.H., 1991) Several studies show that specific characteristics of these experiences are associated with psychological consequences and how the severity and chronicity of suffered violent acts are linked with psychological distress, anxiety, depression, PTSD and other symptoms (Dutton, 1992; Ahlfs-Dunn SM, 2016). In the light of these considerations, it is evident the complexity of the operators’ work in specialized centers that make contact with people who live in these dramatic conditions.Aims of this research are therefore to evaluate the psychological impact of violence on needy women, on the parenting experience and on operators involved in human services. The study takes place at Centro San Fedele in Milan, an organization that have particular attention on social aspects and sanitary education, aimed at hosting, taking care and supporting people who need help. Two series of tests were created ad hoc, composed by a registry paper,General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12), (Piccinelli et al., 1993); Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation-Outcome Measure (CORE-OM), Parenting Stress Index (PSI-SF) (Guarino, 2008). The series of tests dedicated to operators was composed by a registry paper; Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) (Maslach & Jackson, 1981); Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS-2)(Endler & Parker, 1990), Balanced Emotional Empathy Scale (BEES).The sample is composed by 150 women (mean age: 44.92; s.d.=±13.93). 58,7% has been victim of any type of violence. People who have been victim of any type of violence reported significantly worse levels of Wellbeing (t=-2.13;p=.035), Symptoms (t=-2.36;p=.02), Functioning (t=-2.92;p=.004), Risk (t=-2.68;p=.008), Total Distress (t=-2.96;p=.004) than who didn’t report any type of violence. Furthermore victims of physical or psychological violence reported significantly worse levels of all the subscales of CORE-OM and worse levels of general health. The number of types of violence experienced was significantly correlated with Symptoms (r=.226;p<.01), Risk (r=.254;p<.01), Total Distress (r=.259;p<.01). The geographic origin didn’t significantly influence any variables investigated (p>.05). Out of 150 women 108 are mothers (mean age=39.90; s.d=± 11.35). Women who have been subject to violence have a greater impairment of their functioning (t(138)=-2,37;p=,02)and total CORE (t(138)=-2,16;p=,03). Victims of economic violence reported a greater level of parental distress, particularly connected with the managing of a child (PSI)(t(50)=-2,14; p=,038). The latter variable seems to be foretold by GHQ level with the effect of having a a partner as a moderator variable(F(3;47)=4,199;p=,0103). The sample of operators is composed instead by 22 volunteers (W=16; M=6; mean age=55,32; ds=16,65), who reported low levels of Emotional Exhaustion (m=11.71; s.d.=11.88) and moderate levels of Depersonalization (m=4.41; s. d.=4.39) and Personal Accomplishment (m=36.48;s.d.=6.98). Men and women did not differ significantly on levels of any subscales. Volunteers who has a direct contact with patients reported significantly higher levels of Emotional Exhaustion (t=2.235, p<.05) compared to others . According to different authors (Briere, 2004; Krantz&Garcia-Moreno, 2005; Krauss, 2006) work on these aspects could be relevant in order to identify the emergence of discomfort and provide preventive psychological interventions.

Full textThe dissertation examines the process of decision making that determined the development of U.S. social policy from the end of the Sixties. It analyzes the institutional character of the debate that took place inside the Congress and inside the think tanks, the academic centers, the cultural and religious foundations and other associations. In particular, the research is focused on the tangle between political ideologies, traditional culture, public opinion and legislative process. The dissertation identifies four different socio-political streams: each of them influenced a particular “phase” of the reform of the U.S. welfare system from 1968 up to 2006. The analysis of the cultural and political debate has been divided in four chapters (chapters 2-5) that allow to delineate different developments for the four streams, after an historical premise (chapter 1) that presents the origins of American welfare system, from the colonial times to the Sixties.

Full textThe thesis ranks among the studies of the Sociology of prison and has as its object of investigation the process of 'incorporation' of theatrical activities within the re-educational function of the prison, seen through the different institutional roles. On the background of a broader reconstruction of the sociological debate on the theories and functions of punishment as a culturally and historically determined social construction, as well as of the dynamics of imprisonment that characterize the current penitentiary system – with particular reference to the Italian context – theatre, as a tool for rehabilitation and social reintegration of prisoners, is explored in its historical evolution and in its multiple sociological implications. The analysis of empirical materials collected in 12 institutes in Lombardia and Emilia Romagna through semi-structured interviews, with reference to the levels of interaction between theatre and prison identified as macro (institutional representatives: directors, commandants, educationalists), meso (theatre operators) and micro (prisoners) highlights the repercussions, potential, critical aspects of the institutionalization process; the resistance put in place by prison staff; the sense of extraneousness and the risks of assimilation of external operators; the opportunities for personal and relational change that theatre offers to restricted people in relation to their re-education.
