In recent years, wireless sensor networks have seen their fields of application expand to affect several areas, including monitoring. In parallel, the field medical projects to assist people did not fail to be interested in this emerging technology thanks to the attractions it represents. It is in this context that our thesis is subscribed. We are interested in the use of a non-intrusive video sensors network to monitor elderly people continuously in their natural environment. The objective is the proposal of a video sensor system combining local and intelligent analysis, a wireless communication system for monitoring people in their habitat or specialized environment. We want above all, to be able to identify and detect the monitored person's behavior as well as his actions and his movements to act on his environment via a wireless communication system and home automation. Then we aim to detect a fall and communicate an alert through the network. This proposal represents an advantageous solution for several reasons. Economically, monitor an elderly person while keeping it in his normal environment would reduce the charges of assistance to people by treating them with specialized staff at the hospital or a nursing home. A significant contribution is the one related to the psychological and social aspects of the elderly, to whom this discreet and invisible monitoring ensures both the feeling of security, respect for privacy and autonomy

The sanitary and social acceptance of the elderly and dependant person is a shake in the society. Its study requires a previous definition of the terms of dependance and loss of autonomy, as well as the elaboration of an assessment roll of the subjection it generates, which can be accepted by everyone. Home maintaining appears as an abounding system, made up by complex benefits an insufficiently focussed on dependance. The consideration of the expression of needs with the analyse of the home maintaining system makes important dysfonctions appear, as well as insufficencies an incoherencies regulations, financing complexity, and coordination difficulties. From these criticisms and from the conflicting reports of the consulted committees about this question come principles, directings and concrete suggestions out, which will may be new answers to the loss of autonomy of the elderly personne through an overall reform of our social protection system and in the respect of the freedom to choose his or her home

With the increase of life expectancy, aging in place is today a major concern for developed and emerging countries. Among the key solutions to explore, gerontechnologies are seen as the most promising. However, their evidence-based efficacy remains to be demonstrated for independent living or even for their usability and acceptance by the targeted old users. In this context, a user-centered conception methodology has been implemented for designing a multi-task and multi-domain (supporting everyday activities, safety, and social participation) assisted living platform targeting frail older adults with functional decline. This platform is named HomeAssist. Based on an analysis of physical, cognitive and fonctional abilities (study 1) and assistive technology needs (study 2) of our sample, HomeAssist has been designed with the originality of providing multi-domain services. Indeed, HomeAssist proposes an activity monitoring system to provide context-aware assistance (study 3), and a unified human-computer interaction system (study 4); while promoting self-determination (study 5). Results underpined the reliability of our activity monitoring system, and reinforced the rationale of our design principles, concerning the unified interaction system and the self-determination support. Notably, positive outcomes in terms of usability and acceptance of the system, as well as benefits concerning users’ feeling of self-determination have been obtained. From this, a last study (study 6) evaluated the benefits from a six-month use of HomeAssist, on functional abilities of frail older adults and caregiver burden. A positive effect of HomeAssist on functional status was obtained (“protective” effect reported by the professional caregivers), as well as a reduction of objective dimension of caregiver burden. Taken together, the results from these pilot studies are encouraging and open numerous research perspectives with high societal impact concerning the promotion of aging in place

In recent years, the development of robotics has enabled the use of robots in active assisted living (AAL). They are used at various levels to help vulnerable individuals, due to age, illness, or disability, achieve a certain level of autonomy. They can be used, for example, to assist with daily tasks or to alert caregivers or family members in case of dangerous or abnormal situations. Falls or immobility on the floor are important examples of such dangerous or abnormal situations. Our thesis falls within the field of computer vision, and in particular that of human action recognition, which could be deployed in the context of home assistance robotics. We propose an approach for human action recognition based on semantic segmentation of human body parts, with a focus on the human body to address partial or slow movements and immobility. Indeed, in the context of home assistance robotics, it is essential to consider the movements of individuals, periods of immobility, as well as camera movements caused by the robot's motion. The literature pays little attention to immobility and camera movements. As part of validating our approach, many datasets for human action recognition are available, covering a wide range of general or daily activities, but they provide less coverage for abnormal situations. When specific actions are available, they are often not adapted to the context of home assistance robotics. To validate our approach, we also propose a new dataset that covers specific situations useful in the context of home assistance. In our thesis, we investigate the optimal pairing of input modalities and architectures for human action recognition in the context of home assistance robotics. Our study resembles an optimization problem, where each architecture is associated with a subset of input modalities. Our goal is to maximize the accuracy of the action recognition system. Optimization is based on an objective function that evaluates the performance of each modality-architecture combination in terms of accuracy. In this process, we take into account the specificities of different architectures. Our experimental study will allow us to determine the best modality-architecture combinations, thus contributing to the development of a robust and efficient solution for home assistance robotics

The average age of the French and European population is increasing; this observation brings new technical and societal challenges. Older people are the most fragile and vulnerable, especially in terms of domestic accidents and specifically falls. This is why many elderly people care projects : technical, academic and commercial have seen the light of day in recent years. This thesis work wasc arried out under Cifre agreement, jointly between the company KRG Corporate and the BMBI laboratory (Biomechanics and Bioengineering) of the UTC (Université of Technologie of Compiègne). Its purpose is to offer a sensor for sound recognition and everyday activities, with the aim of expanding and improving the tele-assistance system already marketed by the company. Several speech recognition or speaker recognition methods have already been proven in the field of sound recognition, including GMM (Modèle de mélange gaussien – Gaussian Mixture Model), SVM-GSL (Machine à vecteurs de support, GMM-super-vecteur à noyau linéaire – Support vector machine GMM Supervector Linear kernel) and HMM (Modèle de Markov caché – Hidden Markov Model). In the same way, we proposed to use i-vectors for sound recognition. I-Vectors are used in particular in speaker recognition, and have revolutionized this field recently. Then we broadened our spectrum, and used Deep Learning, which currently gives very good results in classification across all domains. We first used them to reinforce the i-vectors, then we used them as our exclusive classification system. The methods mentioned above were also tested under noisy and then real conditions. These different experiments gaves us very satisfactory recognition rates, with neural networks as reinforcement for i-vectors and neural networks alone being the most accurate systems, with a very significant improvement compared to the various speech and speaker recognition systems

We propose in this manuscript a realtime3D movement analysis system for inhomefunctionalabilities assessment in aged adults. As a first step, the purpose is to maintain the functionalindependence of this population and to allow an earlier detection of a motor decompensation inorder to facilitate a rehabilitation process. To quantify the equilibrium quality of a subject, webuilt a system using the Kinect sensor in order to analyze a simple clinical test validated in geriatricrehabilitation: the Timed Up and Go (TUG). Three experiments conducted in heterogeneousenvironments (laboratory, day hospital and home) showed good measurement reliability of theidentified parameters. In particular, they allow to assign a motor control note indicating themotor frailty. Then, we proposed a video processing chain to increase the robustness of theanalysis of the various TUG phases: automatic detection of the sitting posture, patientsegmentation and three body joints extraction. The results of this work allow us to considerseveral perspectives. First, we believe conduct experiments on a larger population in order toconfirm the system reliability. Then, various technical and ergonomic improvements would benecessary to facilitate general public use. Finally, it would be interesting to extend the proposedmethodology for other clinical test to prolong the autonomy at home

The access to a grand old age has a tendance to be nothing special for the octogenarian and the hundred year olds, who are confronted with health and handicap problems. Of which adds to the pathogeny of family and social isolation. Taking into count the parameters of every individual as well as those of their family circle. This must introduce a pragmatic approach, a true diagnostic and a fundamental gerontolgists intervention. The evolution of the place reserved to old age people in our society and their problems and their participation in the construction of a true puzzle, the genrator of an extrodinary and diversified structure and ways that people can take care of them. This study will try to make us understand and be aware of why the idea to maintain the old in their homes, which is an object of a consensus doesn't translat on the job by a beam of different ways put in place to respect the fundamental choice of old people to stay in their homes

This research can be seen as a macroscopic approach to a large-scale distributed data gathering. We propose a software architecture to monitor elderly or dependent people in their own house. Many studies have been done on hardware aspects resulting in operational products. But there is a lack of adaptive algorithms to handle all the data generated by these products, because such data is distributed and heterogeneous in a large scale environment. We propose a multi-agent classification method to collect and to aggregate data about activity, movements and physiological information of the monitored people: agent's know-how consists in a simple classification algorithm. Data generated at this local level are communicated and adjusted between agents to obtain a set of patterns. This data is dynamic; the system has to store the built patterns and has to create new patterns when new data is available. Therefore, the system is adaptive and can be spread on a large scale. The generated data is used at a local level, for example to raise an alert, but also to evaluate global risks. We present the specification choices and the massively multi-agent architecture we developed

This thesis is a thesis CIFRE between LORIA and the MEDETIC Company and focuses on the design of telehomecare system for the elderly. In addition to the design of a remote surveillance architecture “Vill’Âge ®” based on networks of heterogeneous sensor (home automation, IEEE802.15.4/Zigbee, Wifi, Bluetooth), thesis has contributed essentially on the proposal of a clustering and routing protocol in the network of wireless sensors with an approach to fuzzy logic, and of a middleware for the collection and processing of data from sensors with the management of the quality of service as a special feature.A first platform was developed at Colmar (MEDETIC) and a second who is more complete is under development at LORIA (http://infositu.loria.fr/).By using this system, MEDeTIC, offers a new concept of smart homes for the senior citizens, named in French “Maisons Vill’Âge”. The first housing schemes are being built in 2 departments of France. A flat is entirely equipped to act as a demonstrator and as laboratory of research and development. The system is designed for the elderly who wish to spend their old age in their own home, because of its potential to increase independence and quality of life. This would not only benefit the elderly who want to live in their own home, but also the national health care system by cutting costs significantly. Based on this PhD thesis, MPIGate, a “Multiprotocol Interface and Gateway for for telecare, environment”, has been developed. MPIGate was awarded in the competition of the Ministry of Higher Education and Research and OSEO 2010

Population ageing is a major issue for society in the next years, especially because of the increase of dependent people. The limits in specialized institutes capacity and the wish of the elderly to stay at home as long as possible explain a growing need for new specific at home services. Technologies can help securing the person at home by detecting falls. They can also help in the evaluation of the frailty for preventing future accidents. This work concerns the development of low cost ambient systems for helping the stay at home of elderly. Depth cameras allow analysing in real time the displacement of the person. We show that it is possible to recognize the activity of the person and to measure gait parameters from the analysis of simple feature extracted from depth images. Activity recognition is based on Hidden Markov Models and allows detecting at risk behaviours and falls. When the person is walking, the analysis of the trajectory of her centre of mass allows measuring gait parameters that can be used for frailty evaluation. This work is based on laboratory experimentations for the acquisition of data used for models training and for the evaluation of the results. We show that some of the developed Hidden Markov Models are robust enough for classifying the activities. We also evaluate de precision of the gait parameters measurement in comparison to the measures provided by an actimetric carpet. We believe that such a system could be installed in the home of the elderly because it relies on a local processing of the depth images. It would be able to provide daily information on the person activity and on the evolution of her gait parameters that are useful for securing her and evaluating her frailty

Today, Alzheimer's disease is one of the worst health problem in the world (World health Organisation, 2014). It is a degenerative disease which has consequences, not only on the person, but also on the family surrounding. In France, public authorities have taken in consideration these facts and prioritized services for family caregivers, for example Alzheimer plans of action. However, if the home support services seem a necessity for the couple caregiver/care-receiver, the need for support appears to be underestimated. To study the life conditions of persons with Alzheimer disease and their surrounding, four types of methodologies were used.First, a text analysis revealed that the political context in France favors home stay for people with Alzheimer disease. Then, a review of scientific texts pointed out some characteristics of caregivers’ acceptance of proposed support services. After that, a reflection on therapeutic ethics in occupational therapy pinpointed 10 specific items for a family approach to Alzheimer disease. The second methodology was a survey using the Delphi technique with 26 experts. This investigation revealed 22 conditions necessary for homecare. The third methodology used a questionnaire with 128 caregivers in the Gironde area to document the use of support services related to homecare. Statistical analysis identified five types of caregivers and the way that these persons use professional aids. Finally, the fourth methodology was life stories. Seven interviews were conducted with couples having one member with Alzheimer disease. The analysis contributes to specify the reasons related to better living at home. These findings bring a better understanding of factors that influence the decision to stay or not at home. They allow us to consider an intervention model based on the couple’s life story and the way they live. This helps us to maximise freedom of decision for life orientation
