Abstract:
Need for cognition (NFC) refers to “the (enduring) tendency for an individual to engage in and enjoy effortful analytic activity” ( Cacioppo & Petty, 1982, p. 116 ). Yet, NFC has predominantly been assessed in adults. I present a 19-item German NFC scale for children of 10 years and older. 745 secondary-school students were assessed three times in grades 5 and 6 with measures of NFC, intelligence, achievement, and motivational variables. The scale showed good psychometric properties, validity, and suitability for longitudinal research. Confirmatory factor analyses supported a one-dimensional conceptualization of NFC and the need for method factors for the effects of item wording, which were systematically related to students’ ability, achievement, and motivation.

Abstract:
The present study investigates individual differences in the automatic use of haptic information from interpersonal touch. We present a questionnaire assessing individual differences in the need for interpersonal touch (NFIPT), which was validated within an unrelated product-evaluation task. Before entering the laboratory, participants were briefly touched on the shoulder or received no touch. Assessing confidence and frustration within the following product-evaluation task, we examined moderating effects of NFIPT and additionally effects of need for touch (NFT). Results showed that higher NFIPT participants were more confident when they were briefly touched. Effects on frustration were only found for NFT. Results show that frustration was greater for individuals with higher NFT, when they could not touch the product during the evaluation task.

Full text
Abstract:
Warrants for ramp metering installation have been developed by a number of U.S. states. These warrants are generally simple and are based on the traffic, geometry, and safety conditions in the immediate vicinity of each ramp (local conditions). However, advanced applications of ramp metering use system-based metering algorithms that involve metering a number of on-ramps to address system bottlenecks. These algorithms have been proved to perform better compared with local ramp metering algorithms. This situation creates a disconnect between existing agency metering warrants to install the meters and the subsequent management and operations of the ramp meters. This study focused on assessing the need for system warrants in addition to local warrants for ramp metering installation to prevent traffic breakdown at bottleneck locations. A linear programming formulation combined with consideration of the stochasticity of bottleneck capacity was used to select the ramps to be metered on the basis of the system bottlenecks. The study found that the selection of these ramps for metering—in addition to those justified by local warrants—could delay the breakdown at the system bottleneck location and improve the performance of the freeway main line. Another important benefit of selecting ramps for metering based on system operations was its distribution of on-ramp delays because of metering of more ramps and thus to a reduction in the delay experienced on the ramps selected with the existing warrants that were based on local conditions.

Abstract:
Assessing the level of improvement of students' writing competency during a semester is becoming increasingly important for business communication instructors. When conducting an assessment, instructors need to be aware of issues that will affect reliability and validity. They need to develop cleargoals at the beginning; for example, good assessment strives to improve instruction and to develop students' communication skills. Because different schools have different missions and operate in different environments, a custom-made instrument will ensure that the assessment fits the local conditions. Before con ducting the assessment, the instrument needs to be validated for specific use, and scorers must be trained in holistic scoring to reach an overall assessment.
