Abstract:
CONTEXT: Tay-Sachs disease is an autosomal recessive disease characterized by progressive neurologic degeneration, fatal in early childhood. In the Ashkenazi Jewish population the disease incidence is about 1 in every 3,500 newborns and the carrier frequency is 1 in every 29 individuals. Carrier screening programs for Tay-Sachs disease have reduced disease incidence by 90% in high-risk populations in several countries. The Brazilian Jewish population is estimated at 90,000 individuals. Currently, there is no screening program for Tay-Sachs disease in this population. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the importance of a Tay-Sachs disease carrier screening program in the Brazilian Jewish population by determining the frequency of heterozygotes and the acceptance of the program by the community. SETTING: Laboratory of Molecular Genetics - Institute of Biosciences - Universidade de São Paulo. PARTICIPANTS: 581 senior students from selected Jewish high schools. PROCEDURE: Molecular analysis of Tay-Sachs disease causing mutations by PCR amplification of genomic DNA, followed by restriction enzyme digestion. RESULTS: Among 581 students that attended educational classes, 404 (70%) elected to be tested for Tay-Sachs disease mutations. Of these, approximately 65% were of Ashkenazi Jewish origin. Eight carriers were detected corresponding to a carrier frequency of 1 in every 33 individuals in the Ashkenazi Jewish fraction of the sample. CONCLUSION: The frequency of Tay-Sachs disease carriers among the Ashkenazi Jewish population of Brazil is similar to that of other countries where carrier screening programs have led to a significant decrease in disease incidence. Therefore, it is justifiable to implement a Tay-Sachs disease carrier screening program for the Brazilian Jewish population.

Abstract:
The State of São Paulo is one of the most studied regions of Brazil in regard to amphibian species richness and distribution. However, we still do not have a list of species for the State. Therefore, we present here a list including 231 species of amphibians (225 anurans and six caecilians), of which 27 are endemic. We present data about previous and current taxonomists and speculate about future prospects in the study and conservation of amphibian biodiversity in São Paulo State.

We provide a checklist, distribution map, and key to the amphisbaenians of the municipality of São Paulo. Seven species in three genera were recorded. Between August 2003 and June 2007, 104 individuals in two genera and five species were received at the Laboratório de Herpetologia of the Instituto Butantan: Amphisbaena alba, A. dubia, A. mertensi, A. trachura, and Leposternon microcephalum. Records for two additional species, Amphisbaena hogei and Cercolophia roberti, were recovered at the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo. Two widely distributed species, Amphisbaena dubia and Leposternon microcephalum, present different distribution patterns, probably reflecting the distribution of open and forested areas in the studied region, close to contact areas between the Atlantic Forest and adjacent open formations. Most amphisbaenians seem to endure habitat modifications in urbanized areas, but some species as A. hogei and C. roberti are no longer recorded in the São Paulo area.

Abstract:
In view of the lack of researches on otomycoses in Brazil, we have tried to study their incidence, their clinical characteristics and the predisponent factors During one year, 22 suspected cases were seen, 20 of them corresponded to otomycosis infections. The most frequent species were Aspergillus niger (35%) and Candida albicans (20%). The genus Aspergillus represented 75% of the isolates. Itching and hyperaemia (70%), otalgia (65%), hipoacusia (50%) were the commonest signs. Lack of cerumen (70%) chronic otitis (30%) previous antibiotic therapy and eczema (25%) were the most outstanding predisponent factors.

Os trabalhos artísticos e exposições empreendidos durante a pesquisa de Mestrado - 2014 a 2016 - foram motivados por investigações e vivências na cidade de São Paulo. Configurados a partir de reflexões sobre a paisagem urbana e sobre aspectos históricos e contemporâneos peculiares a essa cidade, à sua arquitetura, ao seu urbanismo e às suas narrativas. No entanto, algumas obras excedem o âmbito desta cidade. Pretende-se que seja comum a todas elas uma experiência poética centrada na produção de descontinuidades espaciais e temporais. O \"tempo\" - a duração temporal de uma experiência, a manipulação de sua intensidade, de sua continuidade ou de sua paralização - foi elemento estudado em todos os casos.<br>The artworks and exhibitions undertaken during Master research - 2014 to 2016 - were motivated by investigation and experiences in the city of São Paulo. They took shape from reflections upon the urban landscape and on historical and contemporary aspects peculiar to this city, its architecture, its urbanism and its narratives. However, some works are beyond the scope of this city. It is intended to be common to all propositions a poetic experience centered on the production of spatial and temporal discontinuities. The \"time\" - the temporal duration of an experience, the elaboration of its intensity, its continuity or its paralysis - was studied in every case.

Este projeto busca articular visualmente as paisagens urbanas, as ocupações de edifícios abandonados e as grafias do centro de São Paulo com a linguagem fotográfica: mediante intervenções gráficas sobre as fotografias propõe-se uma reflexão a respeito das transformações que vem sofrendo a visualidade do centro antigo. Isto é, o colapso de um tipo de urbanismo, o derretimento da \"utopia\" moderna e da visão cartão postal da cidade fazem parte de um mesmo contexto de crise, em que também se questiona a fotografia como representação realista. O trabalho final é um livro de fotografia com uma linguagem híbrida com outros meios de representação.<br>This project aims to visually articulate urban landscapes, empty buildings occupations and graphic symbols of Sao Paulo\'s city center, using photography. A reflection based on graphic interventions about the changes undergone in the old city center\'s visuality and in the photographic language is proposed. That is, the collapse of a kind of urbanism, the melting of modern \"utopia\" and city postcard view are part of the same crisis context, which also questions realism in photography. The outcome is a photo book that uses hybrid language and other forms of representation.

O material escolhido para a análise é o texto teatral Na selva das cidades, de Bertolt Brecht. O que se quer com isso, é dialogar com os questionamentos que Brecht fazia a um mundo em constante transformação nos primeiros anos do século XX. Um mundo do qual fazia parte e que procurava entender pela ótica das cidades. O trabalho é composto de uma parte teórica e uma prática. A teórica se dedica às reflexões centrais a partir dos temas suscitados pela análise e está concentrada nos três primeiros capítulos. A parte prática marca o encontro da experiência artística com a acadêmica e se traduz na criação de um texto teatral exposto no quarto capítulo. Desbravar a selva de pedra de Brecht e tentar conhecê-la em suas nuances pouco exploradas é um grande desafio e uma experiência altamente inspiradora. É uma viagem ao início da primeira fase da obra brechtiana que pode nos levar a novas descobertas sobre o papel das grandes metrópoles na vida dos indivíduos e ao encontro de caminhos que nos tragam de volta à nossa própria selva de pedra.<br>This dissertation aims to think over the relationship between individuals and the process of formation of cities in the modern world, from themes such as family, money, sexuality, power, survival, loneliness and freedom. The material chosen for the analysis is the theatrical text In the Jungle of Cities, Bertolt Brecht. The proposal is to dialogue with the questions that Brecht asked for a changing world in the early years of the twentieth century. A world to which he belonged and which sought to understand through the perspective of cities. The work consists of theoretical and practical parts. The theory is devoted to central reflections from the issues raised by the analysis and is concentrated in the first three chapters. The practical part marks the connection of the artistic and the academic experiences and it is translated through the creation of a theatrical text displayed in the fourth chapter. Breaking the concrete jungle of Brecht and try to know it in its unexplored nuances is a great challenge and a highly inspiring experience. It is a journey to the beginning of Brecht´s first work phase, that can lead us to new discoveries about the role of large cities in the lives of individuals and to different paths that bring us back to our own concrete jungle.

This fact lead to question the profile of this group and their life stories as women teaching in a masculine environment. Therefore, the main aims was to analyse the professional careers of these women according to their own perspectives. The methodological approach was a qualitative research with open interviews and narratives as data collection. The participants were seven academics who were teaching in areas such as mechanical engineering, construction and electro technology and who started to work at IFSP between 1976 and 1999. In interviewing and portraying parts of the life of these academics, we include them in the history of education, as they are relevant local agents and writers of a real history in the professional education. Among the results, it is possible to observe their influence in the institutional changes as well as in the life of their students. Moreover, they worked as managers in different levels and areas of the institution and were part of administrative teams of the campus. These academics also developed research in their own educational fields. In having the narratives of these academics in evidence, we managed to understand how this group of women win their own professional space in a predominantly male environment. This achievement happened due to the pioneering way they contributed to the management of their institution as well as their research and professional behaviour.<br>A presente tese surgiu da observação do pequeno número de mulheres que ministram disciplinas técnicas ou tecnológicas em áreas que concentram engenheiros, arquitetos e tecnólogos no Instituto Federal de São Paulo-Campus São Paulo (IFSP). Tal fato levou ao questionamento sobre qual seria o perfil desse grupo e como foram suas trajetórias profissionais sendo mulheres docentes num universo predominantemente masculino. O objetivo geral foi o de analisar as trajetórias profissionais de professoras de disciplinas do ensino técnico e tecnológico sob a ótica delas próprias. A opção metodológica foi por uma abordagem qualitativa com entrevistas abertas e narrativas. Participaram sete professoras que atuavam nas áreas de Mecânica, Construção Civil e Eletrotécnica e que ingressaram entre os anos de 1976 e 1999 no IFSP. Ao entrevistar e retratar parcelas das vidas dessas docentes, de certa forma as incluímos na história da educação visto que foram presenças marcantes como agentes locais e escritoras de uma história real no âmbito da educação profissionalizante. Entre os resultados, foi possível perceber que elas influenciaram os acontecimentos institucionais e a vida de seus alunos com sua atuação. Além disso, foram gestoras em vários níveis e áreas da instituição fazendo parte de equipes administrativas do campus. As professoras realizaram pesquisas nas suas áreas de atuação e estudo. Foi possível compreender como esse grupo de entrevistadas docentes mulheres conquistaram seus espaços profissionais em ambientes onde havia a dominância do sexo masculino. Essa conquista se deu pela forma pioneira com as quais geriram, pesquisaram e atuaram na instituição.

Resumo: Essa dissertação versa sobre milicianos pardos de São Paulo e as corporações militares nas quais estavam integrados entre 1765 e 1831. A configuração social em questão teve uma trajetória histórica muito particular, o que deu contornos específicos à formação daqueles corpos e às experiências de seus homens pardos. Por outro lado, a política racial régia levada a efeito ao longo da segunda metade do século XVIII e início do XIX, bem como o posicionamento das autoridades coloniais, impactaram sensivelmente nas formas como o serviço na milícia foi vivenciado. Objetivou-se aqui, primeiramente, a ompreensão do processo de formação das tropas de pardos livres que resultou na criação e enraizamento do Regimento dos Úteis, e da trajetória deste comparativamente a instituições congêneres na América portuguesa. Do mesmo modo, pretendeu-se ampliar o conhecimento acerca da vida social e política daqueles sujeitos outsiders (conforme o modelo teórico de Norbert Elias), atentando-se para a forma pela qual eram incluídos na milícia, seu perfil sócio-econômico, suas diferentes aspirações e comportamentos em relação a disputas por poder e postos de comando. Por fim, examinou-se a atuação dos milicianos pardos de São Paulo na conjuntura da independência. O trabalho foi embasado em análise de um amplo e diversificado corpo documental, no qual se destaca a documentação produzida ordinariamente no interior do regimento miliciano dos pardos e, dentre esta, seu Livro Mestre.

Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 153-159).<br>The urbanized terrain of São Paulo is characterized by wasteful landscapes on peripheral areas of the metropolitan agglomeration, and decaying landscapes of waste in the core of the city. If on the one hand, the increasingly vacant core of São Paulo is fully equipped with infrastructure, on the other, the burgeoning periphery sprawls onto non-structured lands. Within the core of the city, the São Paulo lowlands stand out as a potential regional site to address this major incongruence. This thesis proposes to study the modernization of a landscape, from an undesired floodplain into a crucial component for the functioning of the metropolis. I examine the lowlands as a constructed landscape, and argue that the infrastructural nature of the territory creates a platform for continued reclamation. By identifying the themes and narrative of the area, I then explore the lowlands as a site for contemporary urban planning in order to re-frame the city's current questions regarding its future.<br>by Victor Eskinazi.<br>M.C.P.

Esta dissertação dará maior ênfase às modificações que ocorreram na última década que foram muito significativas tanto para o minerador como para o consumidor.Serão vistos os tipos de produtos que as empresas de Água Mineral costumam comercializar e as exigências e expectativas do consumidor com relação aos produtos de água mineral. Devido à importância da água mineral nos dias de hoje tanto como recurso hídrico, como bem mineral; este trabalho estuda o atual Mercado de Águas e até se permite fazer breves previsões futuras.<br>This work as aim to draw a brief panorama of Drinking Waters that are explored in the state of São Paulo. Through this work will be studied the importance of the exploration of Drinking Waters for the São Paulo state and for the whole country. Several changes occurred in the Market of Mineral Water that in 1980 it was practically unknown. This dissertation will emphasize the changes which happened in the last decade which were meaningful for the miner and for the customer. They will be seen the kind of products that the Mineral Water companies use to commercialize and the exigencies and expectations of the consumers with relation at the Mineral Water products. Nowadays, due to the importance of Mineral Water as such a hydraulic resource and as a mineral resource, this work studies the actual Market of Mineral Water and it lets itself to make future predictions about this market.

O objetivo desse trabalho é analisar os interstícios do mercado kasher na cidade de São Paulo. No que diz respeito à alimentação, as leis dietéticas, rígidas leis, são uma parcela significativa da identidade judaica religiosa ortodoxa. Inclusive, em muitos casos, distingue-se um judeu religioso de um laico pela alimentação. Os conflitos alimentícios são tão intensos que ocorrem ate mesmo no interior das famílias judaicas. Buscamos assim, verificar a relação, dentre outras coisas, da sacralização do judaísmo, da teoria à pratica, em que tal resulta em um mercado de proporções progressivas e onerosas aos consumidores, sobretudo judeus ortodoxos.<br>The objective of this work is to analyze the interstices of the market to kasher in the city of São Paulo. In what it says respect to the feeding, the dietary laws, rigid laws, are a significant parcel of the orthodox religious Jewish identity. Also, in many cases, a religious Jew distinguishes itself from a lay one for the feeding. The nourishing conflicts are so intense that they occur even though in the interior of the Jewish families. We search thus, to verify the relation, amongst other things, of the sacralization of the judaism, the theory to practises, where such results in a market of gradual and onerous ratios to the consumers, over all Jewish orthodox.

As infecções respiratórias agudas (IRA) são as doenças infecciosas mais frequentes em seres humanos e os vírus respiratórios são os agentes de maior ocorrência na etiologia das mesmas. Os coronavírus humanos (HCoVs) são reconhecidos como causa comum de infecções do trato respiratório superior e, menos comumente, do trato respiratório inferior. Dados da ocorrência do HCoV na população brasileira são escassos. O presente estudo tem por objetivo avaliar a ocorrência de HCoV em crianças acometidas por IRA atendidas no Hospital Universitário da Universidade de São Paulo , São Paulo-SP, entre o período de 1995 a 2008. Amostras em cDNA foram utilizadas em ensaio de PCR em Tempo Real para detecção dos 4 tipos de coronavírus. Amostras positivas foram utilizadas em ensaio de PCR convencional e posteriormente tipificadas por sequenciamento. Amostras negativas pelo método de PCR convencional foram tipificadas através de PCR em Tempo Real e Nested PCR específico para cada tipo de HCoV. Quatrocentos e dez amostras foram positivas pelo ensaio de PCR Real Time, sendo o coronavírus detectado em 8.94% das amostras. Duzentos e noventa e oito amostras foram tipificadas, sendo o tipo OC43 o de maior ocorrência, seguido pelos tipos NL63; HKU1 e 229E.<br>Acute respiratory infections (ARI) are the most common infectious diseases in humans and respiratory viruses are the most frequent agents in the etiology of the same. The human coronaviruses (HCoVs) are recognized as a common cause of upper respiratory tract infections and, less commonly, lower respiratory tract. Data from the occurrence of HCoV in the Brazilian population are scarce, despite the high incidence of respiratory infections during the winter. This study aims to evaluate the occurrence of HCoV in children affected by acute respiratory infections treated at University Hospital of São Paulo (USP), São Paulo-SP, between the periods 1995 to 2008. Samples of cDNA were screened by Real Time PCR for detection of the four types of coronavirus. Positive samples were used in standard PCR assay and subsequently typed by sequencing. Samples positive by Real Time but negative by standard PCR assay were typed by specific Nested PCR and Real-Time for each type of HCoV. Four hundred and ten samples were positive by Real Time PCR assay, and the occurrence of coronaviruses in our samples of 8.94%. Two hundred and ninety eight were typed, the type OC43 being the most frequent, followed by the recently discovered types, NL63 ; HKU1 and HCoV-229E.

Este trabajo pretende aproximarse a una comprensión de este término&#x0D; y entender cómo procesos de metropolización contemporáneos, identificados en la ciudad de São Paulo,&#x0D; afectan a algunos de sus espacios de interacción ciudadana más significativos. Con ello se pretende&#x0D; comprender la importancia de esa expresión aparentemente ambigua para pensar en los espacios de&#x0D; acción de la vida pública en nuestras ciudades del mañana. The concept of urbanity is difficult but essential for studying the contemporary urban world, analyzing spaces&#x0D; that structure socially and functionally the city. Based on a rationalist urbanism, metropolitan expansion&#x0D; models increased the limits of the traditional city and transformed the idea of urbanity. As lâmpadas LED (em inglês, light-emitting diodes) vem se consolidando no mercado principalmente após melhorias tecnológicas e significativa redução de seus custos. Entretanto, ainda há um potencial de eficiência energética a ser explorado pela introdução das lâmpadas LED, principalmente na iluminação pública. Diversos municípios ainda não modernizaram o seu parque de iluminação pública, seja por falta de informação ou por dificuldades de financiamento. Ciente dos benefícios da modernização da iluminação pública e das necessidades de financiamento dos municípios brasileiros, o Banco Interamericano de Desenvolvimento (BID) tem desenvolvido projetos que visar viabilizar a modernização dos parques de iluminação pública dos municípios brasileiros. Entretanto, em função da falta de dados publicados e sistematizados sobre os parques de iluminação pública, não é trivial identificar os municípios com maior potencial de eficiência energética na iluminação pública e necessidade de financiamento para projetos de eficiência energética. Desta forma, este trabalho propõe uma metodologia para estimação do potencial de eficiência energética da iluminação pública com base em características socioeconômicas públicas dos municípios e para identificação dos municípios com maiores oportunidades para investimentos no setor. A metodologia foi aplicada ao estudo de caso dos municípios de São Paulo que apresentam uma base harmonizadas de dados históricos do consumo de energia elétrica dos municípios paulistas entre 2016 e 2020 (SIMA/SP, 2021). Em termos agregados a metodologia proposta estimou um potencial de redução do consumo na iluminação pública da ordem de 1249 GWh/ano no Estado de São Paulo, o que seria equivalente a uma economia anual de R$ 348,68 milhões, sendo que a maior parte deste potencial se encontra nas cidades com população entre 50 mil e 500 mil habitantes. A exploração deste potencial implicaria na substituição de cerca de 2,9 milhões de lâmpadas convencionais por lâmpadas LED mais eficientes em todo o Estado de São Paulo.

Question: Does reopening schools in the pandemic increase COVID-19 incidence and mortality? Findings: On average, there was no systematic association between school reopening and COVID-19 incidence or mortality in So Paulo State, up to 12 weeks after reopening. This was also the case for schools in most vulnerable conditions. Aggregate mobility was already high before the school reopening and did not significantly increase afterwards. Meaning: Results imply that reopening schools under appropriate protocols in developing countries during the pandemic is unlikely to affect the aggregate number of cases or deaths when counterfactual mobility is already high.
