Abstract:
ObjectiveThis paper provides an update and overview of the law governing direct-to-consumer (DTC) advertising of autologous stem cell interventions (ASCIs) in Australia. It follows significant changes to the advertising regulations made in 2018. MethodsThe paper reviews the three primary sources or ‘centres’ of law regulating ASCIs in Australia, together with the relevant guidance documents that supplement these sources. It provides analysis of how the post-2018 advertising regulations, contained in the Therapeutic Goods Act 1989 (Cwlth), apply to all ‘biologicals’, including ASCIs. It demonstrates how these three sources of law interact with one another and outlines the new tiered offence regime that applies to contraventions of these prohibitions. ResultsThe analysis demonstrates that DTC advertising of ASCIs in Australia is strictly controlled, with primary legislation prohibiting the advertising of biologicals altogether. ConclusionsThe polycentric legal regime regulating biologicals in Australia clearly makes DTC advertising of ASCIs unlawful. Health practitioners who promote ASCIs, either online, in print or in other media forms, may be penalised in different ways and by different authorities. What is known about the topic?Although several analyses have examined the regulation of ASCIs in Australia, no analysis has studied the reforms made in 2018 relating to the advertising of biologicals. As such, this analysis contributes a fresh examination of these relatively recent reforms. What does this paper add? This analysis clarifies the effects of these new advertising regulations, providing clear guidance on the relevant legal provisions for the benefit of health practitioners and health professionals more generally. What are the implications for practitioners?Health practitioners, especially those who offer ASCIs, should be aware that civil and criminal penalties are likely to be imposed on individuals who promote biologicals in Australia by any means.

Abstract:
Most contact sports, including rugby union, carry a risk of injury. Although acute spinal cord injuries (ASCIs) in rugby are rare, the consequences of such injuries are far-reaching. Optimal management of these injuries is challenging, and a detailed understanding of the different barriers and facilitators to optimal care is needed. In this study, we aimed to describe the perception of players, regarding factors related to the optimal immediate management of a catastrophic injury in a developing country with socioeconomic and health care inequities. The most frequently reported barriers were transportation delays after injury and admission to appropriate medical facilities. Other barriers included inadequate equipment, the quality of first aid care, and barriers within the acute hospital setting. Barriers were more prevalent in rural and lower socioeconomic areas. These findings are relevant for all rugby stakeholders and may help shape education, awareness, and future policy around the immediate management of ASCIs.

Abstract:
The hydrophilic character of palygorskite has been modified by grafting organic group and controlling surface energy for improving compatibility of palygorskite in rubber matrix using palygorskite ascis-polybutadiene rubber fillers. The effects of coupling modification on the performance ofcis-polybutadiene rubber materials filled with palygorskite were investigated, and the influence of coupling agent dosage on their mechanical properties was also studied. The results indicated that the mechanical performance ofcis-polybutadiene rubber materials reinforced by modified palygorskite could be improved significantly, and the tensile strength and tearing strength increased by 122.5% and 107.6% at the optimal dosage (15%) of coupling agent 3-mercaptopropyl trimethoxysilane. Moreover, the reinforcement mechanism of rubber composite materials as prepared was also analyzed.

Abstract:
In order to use sepiolite nanofibers ascis-polybutadiene rubber fillers, the hydrophilic character of sepiolite nanofibers should be modified by grafting organic group and controlling surface free energy for improving compatibility of sepiolite nanofibers in rubber matrix. The relationship between the performance of thecis-polybutadiene rubber filled with sepiolite and the coupling modification was investigated, and the influence of coupling agentγ-(2,3-epoxypropoxy)propyltrimethoxysilane dosage on mechanical properties ofcis-polybutadiene rubber materials was also studied. The results showed that the mechanical properties could be improved obviously after reinforcement by modified sepiolite nanofibers. The optimum dosage of coupling agentγ-(2,3-epoxypropoxy)propyltrimethoxysilane was 7%, and the tensile strength and tearing strength increased by 108.3% and 74.1%, respectively. On this basis, the reinforcement mechanism of the composite rubber materials was also discussed.

Abstract:
A preparative gas chromatography (pGC) method was developed for the separation of isomers (cis- andtrans-asarone) from essential oil ofAcorus tatarinowii. The oil was primarily fractionated by silica gel chromatography using different ratios of petroleum ether and ethyl acetate as gradient elution solvents. And then the fraction that contains mixture of the isomers was further separated by pGC. The compounds were separated on a stainless steel column packed with 10% OV-101 (3 m × 6 mm, i.d.), and then the effluent was split into two gas flows. One percent of the effluent passed to the flame ionization detector (FID) for detection and the remaining 99% was directed to the fraction collector. Two isomers were collected after 90 single injections (5 uL) with the yield of 178 mg and 82 mg, respectively. Furthermore, the structures of the obtained compounds were identified ascis- andtrans-asarone by1H- and13C-NMR spectra, respectively.

Abstract:
An increase in mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm) and mitochondrially produced 3-hydroxy (3-OH) oxylipins was experienced in asci of the nonfermentative yeasts Galactomyces reessii and Lipomyces starkeyi and the fermentative yeasts Pichia farinosa and Schizosaccharomyces octosporus . Strikingly, asci of Zygosaccharomyces bailii showed no increase in mitochondrial activity (ΔΨm and oxylipin production). As expected, oxygen deprivation only inhibited ascus formation in those yeasts with increased ascus mitochondrial activity. We conclude that ascus formation in yeasts is not always dependent on mitochondrial activity. In this case, fermentation may provide enough energy for ascus formation in Z. bailii.

Full text
Abstract:
In many crosses of laboratory strains of Neurospora crassa, a large proportion of complete asci abort shortly after ascospore delimitation. The aborted asci contain eight small, degenerate, vacuolated ascospores. We use the term "bubble asci" to signify this special form of ascus abortion. The frequency of bubble asci was scored in 8- to 10-day-old perithecia from crosses between closely related strains and between unrelated strains. When two unrelated or distantly related strains are mated, fewer than 10% of asci abort, whereas up to 70% or more of the asci abort when inbred strains are mated to each other. We conclude that the degree of genetic relatedness of the two haploid parents determines whether abortion occurs. Progeny tests indicate that several genes are involved; the simplest interpretation is that they are weak deleterious recessives whose effects must be combined to produce a high frequency of bubble asci. No ascospores survive in the aborted asci. Therefore, bubble asci cannot distort allele ratios of markers among surviving progeny. When a dominant Round-spore gene was present in one parent of a high bubble-ascus cross, none of the young bubble asci contained nonround spores. Therefore, bubble asci do not result from illegitimate fusion of two nuclei of the same mating type. Heterokaryon-incompatibility genes are not involved in producing bubble asci. No or little bubble-ascus abortion occurs in the homothallic or pseudohomothallic species of Neurospora.

Abstract:
The present study was undertaken to investigate the concerns of secondary school teacher-librarians, that the subject headings set down by the Australian Schools Catalogue Information Service (ASCIS) do not cover topics in senior sourses of study. NSW HSC Economics was chosen to test this perception. Terms were extracted from three textual sources (syllabus, textbook and examination papers) and checked against the subject headings in the ASCIS Subject Headings List. A comparison was made between terms which matched exactly, those which were only partially matched and those which had no match. The linguistic complexity of the term (single-word or multi-word) and the number of textual sources using the term were also taken into account. The results showed a varying degree of match between textual terms and subject headings. Single-word terms found in more than one textual source were much more likely to be found in the subject headings than those from only one textual source. Multi-word terms were found less frequently than single-word terms, but were also more likely to be found when they came from more than one textual source. There was a large number of partial matches in this group, and these were found to be more general in concept than the textual terms. Most of the terms were found, but the general nature of the partial matches and the lack of adequate cross references may cause problems in subject analysis and retrieval.

Abstract:
This thesis seeks to make conections, not a comparison, between Machado de Assis, Oswald de Andrade and Paulo Emilio Salles Gomes, through a specific thematic focus, that refers to the three writers interventions in the historical and literary process of the construction and destruction of an image of the Brazilian ruling class. The thesis contains analyses of Dona Fernanda and of the narrator of Quincas Borba as fictional beings in which Machado crystallized a Weltanschauung of this class and its literary adherents; João Miramar and the protagonist of Três mulheres de três pppês are taken as explicit and opposite doubles of Oswald and Paulo Emilio; the public expectations that the two fictionists carry as the rebellious offspring of the haute bourgeoisie are purged and from the remains the characters are constructed. In Um homem sem profissão and in Cemitério, the intellectual of divided conscience becomes a carrier of hope in a world different from the one narrated. The critical work is guided by the search for the nervous point in which ideological demystification and literary creation meet.

The proposal of this work is to start from a thorough reading of Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas of Machado de Assis and to find out four discursive levels in the text: the Old Testament discourse, the discourse of Stoic Philosophers, the New Testament discourse and the Christian theologian Aurélio Agostinho, and finally the discourse of French moralists as Voltaire. I will show you the evidences of these discourses in the novel text as well as the characteristics which turn concomitant and similar instances into structural pillars which bear the novel gender, according to Bakhtin s definition. Those structures suggest several discursive approaches, some of them concerning the plot nature, others regarding to a critical way about the sources in which Machado de Assis inspired himself or devoured anthropophagically in order to establish a revolutionary narrative discourse which does not end in those four instances. However, they are like pillars which bear and provide a framework for the greatest acrobat capers . Acrobat capers, this is a way which I would define the style of Machado de Assis, a caper in the air without any rope or protection net towards a joy taken by the discovery of the skill which deludes the reader and leads him to ethereal spaces which are beyond the matter

In order to investigate on education in Machados texts had as objectives to research about the life and work of Machado de Assis; to analyze how it presents the intellectual education the instruction-education, simultaneously, to realize how the formation happens in society in the second half of the nineteenth century and in early twentieth century; to inquire still the adjustment between education and literature, as well as the revelation of both analyzed texts. To fulfill the proposed, originally it was made a study in order to know and understand the critical view of some scholars, and apprehend the perspectives of Machado about the nineteenth century literature. It was necessary a survey and biographical selection through the studies and biographic analysis and documental both with regard to theses and dissertations realized about the author, as the existence of critical studies. To research Machados literature implicates to recognize in it and do not end so easily; it is to recognize that is the narrative of an author who cannot be read with an admiration exempt of critical spirit of the same way that it should not be read as a set of works whose interpretations have already been exhausted. Machados texts reflex customs and language, and can be cut out of his texts opinions about Education, the instruction, a good behavior, among many other topics. Machado was a man of his time worried with the formation of a Brazilian nationality.

Full text
Abstract:
The effect of directional cooling on the immediate post thaw membrane integrity of adipose tissue derived adult stem cells (ASCs) was investigated using a directional solidification stage (DSS). ASCs were cooled at either 1, 5, 20 or 40 °C/min to an end temperature of −80°C in the presence and absence of a cryoprotective agent (dimethylsulfoxide, DMSO). After freezing to -80°C, the samples were thawed at 200°C/min and the ability of the frozen/thawed ASCs to exclude fluorescent dyes was assessed. ASCs frozen using the DSS in the presence of 0.85M (or 10% v/v) DMSO were found to have a higher post-thaw cell membrane integrity (confidence level of 99%) when compared with the ASCs frozen in its absence. Intriguingly, a comparison with corresponding data for ASCs that were frozen using a commercially available controlled rate freezer (CRF) suggests that the directionally cooled ASCs (both in the absence and presence of DMSO) exhibit a significantly lower post-thaw cell membrane integrity (confidence level of 95%). This lowering of post-thaw cell membrane integrity for ASCs frozen using the DSS is postulated to be related to the differences in the nature, and the associated damaging effects, of ice crystals formed in the DSS vs. the commercial freezer.

Full text
Abstract:
Effective techniques for the cryopreservation of human Adipose Stem Cells (ASCs) could increase the usefulness of these cells in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. The traditional method of using fetal calf serum (FCS) and a chemical cryoprotectant like dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) during freezing storage restricts the direct use of ASCs in regenerative medicine and reconstruction surgery. The objective of this study was to investigate the apoptotic, necrotic and viability response of ASCs frozen/thawed in the presence of a high molecular weight polymer, Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and in the absence of FCS. Post-freeze/thaw studies were also conducted to evaluate the effect of PVP on the in vitro osteogenic and adipogenic differentiation of ASCs. The results were compared with those obtained using the most commonly used cryopreservation media of 10%DMSO + 10% Dulbecco’s Modified Eagle Media (DMEM) + 80%FCS.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract In IDDQ testing of CMOS ASICs (as in conventional voltage based testing) actual defect coverage, rather than modeled fault coverage figures are relevant to achieving product Q&R targets. This paper reports experimental data on the defect coverage of IDDQ vectors taken from several ASICs from different semiconductor suppliers. We present our generic IDDQ methodology that has been run on these ASICs, including automated IDDQ vector generation/grading and the high speed IDDQ monitor OCIMU. Data are presented on absolute IDDO defect coverage, as estimated from correlation with voltage based tests, on the relative defect coverage of pseudo-stuck-at and the toggle fault models, on the defect coverage of reduced IDDQ sets and on the pattern sensitivity Of IDDQ rejects. It is demonstrated that the pictures shown by modeled fault coverage and actual defect coverage can differ significantly and therefore, theoretical fault coverage figures are not the correct data to assure Q&R targets. We have measured very good IDDQ defect coverage on random logic, but we also show real life cases where IDDQ testing alone is inefficient in screening Q&R hazards.

Waedt, Karl, Yongjian Ding, Antonio Ciriello, and Xinxin Lou. "Development, Distribution and Maintenance of Application Security Controls for Nuclear." In 2017 25th International Conference on Nuclear Engineering. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/icone25-67499.

Full text
Abstract:
The generic concept of Security Controls, as initially deployed in the information security domain, is gradually used in other business domains, including industrial security for critical infrastructure and cybersecurity of nuclear safety I&C. A Security Control, or less formally, a security countermeasure can be any organizational, technical or administrative measure that helps in reducing the risk imposed by a cybersecurity threat. The new IAEA NST036 lists more than 200 such countermeasures. NIST SP800-53 Rev. 4 contains about 450 pages of security countermeasure descriptions, which are graded according to three levels of stringency. In order to facilitate and formalize the process of developing, precisely describing, distributing and maintaining more complex security controls, the Application Security Controls (ASC) concept is introduced by the new ISO/IEC 27034 multipart standard. An ASC is an extensible semi-formal representation of a security control (e.g. XML or JSON-based), which contains a set of mandatory and optional parts as well as possible links to other ASCs. A set of Application Security Controls may be developed by one company and shipped together with a product of another company. ISO/IEC 27034-6 assumes that ASCs are developed by an organization or team specialized in security and that the ASCs are forwarded to customers for direct use or for integration into their own products or services. The distribution of ASCs is supported and formalized by the Organization Normative Frameworks (ONF) and Application Normative Frameworks (ANF) deployed in the respective organizational units. The maintenance and continuous improvement of ASCs is facilitated by the ONF Process and ANF Process. This paper will explore the applicability of these industry standards based ASC lifecycle concepts for the nuclear domain in line with IEC 62645, IEC 62859 and the up-coming IEC 63096. It will include results from an ongoing bachelor thesis and master thesis, mentored by two of the authors, as well as nuclear specific deployment scenarios currently being evaluated by a team of cybersecurity PhD candidates.
