Abstract:
Was the Byzantine thinker Nicephorus Blemmydes (1197–1272) directly influenced in his views about human “proairesis” by the Stoic Epictetus (50–138 AD) or did he take over his views from the Neoplatonic Simplicius? After exploring Blemmydes’ reception of Epictetus, one can say that Blemmydes drew elements in a brief treatise under the title “De virtute et ascesi” from the mainly Neoplatonic Simplicius, who commented on the handbook by the Stoic Epictetus (50–138 AD). Blemmydes, following Simplicius identifies “ἐφ’ ἡμῖν” with “aftexousion” and he designates “proairesis” as an activity, which emanates from “aftexousion”. Blemmydes shows the moral power of “proairesis” as a transforming factor of human existence and the mediatory factor to the dialectical relation between man and God. For the completion of the study, the following sources have been used: Blemmydes’ De virtute et ascesi, Epictetus’ Handbook, and Neoplatonic Simplicius’ commentaries on the Handbook. I specifically focus on the views of Aristotle, Epictetus, and Neoplatonic Simplicius about “proairesis” and compare the views of Blemmydes to Simplicius’ ideas. I conclude that Blemmydes drew ideas from Simplicius, with regard to human “proairesis” and in the context of the practising and cultivating virtues in everyday life.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Ascesis as practised within the early church combined a variety of qualities and functions: combat with the devil, suffering and mortification of the flesh, separation from the world, and preparation for death. It was also a means by which those saints who were not martyrs demonstrated heroic action; through asceticism saints created and maintained power. Hagiographers, in turn, described the ascetic actions of saints in order to construct a sense of the saint's body as a holy place, a locus of power. And yet, ascetic behaviour is not transparent of interpretation; hagiographers represented ascetic practices, and thus sainthood itself, differently. These differences are readily apparent in the two major lives of St Radegund.

Abstract:
Neighborhoods are an important source of inequality, and neighborhood change may lead to changing opportunities for residents. Past research on neighborhood upgrading tends to focus on one process: gentrification. I argue that a broader range of types of neighborhood socioeconomic ascent requires examination. This article documents the different types of neighborhoods ascending from 1970 to the present. Using principal components analysis and cluster analysis, I report the prevalence of socioeconomic ascent, based on increases in neighborhood income, rents, house values, and educational and occupational attainment, among five to seven types of neighborhoods in each decade. I also examine population and housing changes that co–occur with ascent to identify processes of ascent beyond gentrification. Overall, findings suggest mixed implications for neighborhood inequality. While white suburban neighborhoods make up the bulk of neighborhoods that ascend in each decade, minority and immigrant neighborhoods become increasingly likely to ascend over time, though displacement may occur.

Abstract:
The Exegesis on the Soul (nhc ii,6) allegorizes the degradation and re-ascent of the soul. Recently, scholars have reconsidered whether Pachomian monks produced and read the Nag Hammadi Codices, largely based upon codicological evidence. For Pachomians, the soul’s ascent from the body constituted the fulfilment of their ascetic regime. This article offers support for the ‘Pachomian connection’ by analyzing the Exegesis on the Soul alongside Pachomian literature. It argues that shared exegetical tendencies and a common approach to modes of ascetic practice and repentance strengthen the case for monastic readership and ownership of the Nag Hammadi Codices.

This paper proposes to use deep reinforcement learning to teach a physics-based human musculoskeletal model to ascend stairs and ramps. The deep reinforcement learning architecture employs the proximal policy optimization algorithm combined with imitation learning and is trained with experimental data of a public dataset. The human model is developed in the open-source simulation software OpenSim, together with two objects (i.e., the stairs and ramp) and the elastic foundation contact dynamics. The model can learn to ascend stairs and ramps with muscle forces comparable to healthy subjects and with a forward dynamics comparable to the experimental training data, achieving an average correlation of 0.82 during stair ascent and of 0.58 during ramp ascent across both the knee and ankle joints.

Abstract:
The article presents a particular phase in the evolution of Christian asceticism, as exemplified by the monastic-ascetic milieu of Syrian Antioch. The writings of John Chrysostom, Theodoret of Cyprus and Libanius, which all refer to ascetic and monastic life in Antioch and its environs in the second half of the fourth century, are examined. These analyses allow us to identify three types among Antiochian ascetics. First group described included lay inhabitants of Antioch, both male and female, who endeavored to conduct a deeper spiritual life; this group included also persons practicing syneisaktism – a specific mode of ascetic life in which female virgins consecrated to God lived together with men (especially clergy) practicing ascesis. The second group consisted of rustic ascetics, to wit both lay and clergy inhabitants of villages around Antioch who conduced an ascetic lifestyle. The third group were those ascetics who observed monastic (or semi-monastic) life in the Antiochian mountains, especially on Mount Silpios. Monks were held in considerably high esteem, enjoying great respect among the inhabitants of Antioch. This resulted in their occasionally ignoring the rules of detachment from the world and of solitary life, as they entertained visitors or guests and – for serious reasons (e.g. during the trial of inhabitants of Antioch following the tax rebellion in 387) – visited the city. Our analysis thus depicts Antioch and its vicinity as a center of ascetic and monastic life. The clear-cut conclusion that emerges is that pre-monastic and monastic forms of ascetic life both existed in Antioch in the second half of the fourth century.

Abstract:
This article examines the racial/ethnic population dynamics of ascending neighborhoods—those experiencing socioeconomic growth. Drawing on Census and American Community Survey data from 1990 to 2010, we first explore whether changes in racial/ethnic composition occur alongside ascent. We find that, while most neighborhoods’ racial/ethnic composition does not dramatically change during this period, neighborhoods that experienced ascent are much more likely to transition from majority-minority to mixed race or predominantly White than nonascending neighborhoods. Then, we use microdata to analyze whether two potential drivers of ascent, the in-migration of higher-socioeconomic status (SES) households and changes in the fortunes of long-term residents, are racially/ethnically stratified. We argue that the process of neighborhood socioeconomic ascent perpetuates neighborhood racial/ethnic hierarchy. While most Black and Hispanic neighborhoods remain majority-minority, those that ascend are more likely to experience a succession of high-SES White residents replacing minority residents.

Summary Objective: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the kinematic characteristics of pelvic limb joints in orthopaedically normal dogs during stair ascent. Design: Prospective study. Procedure: Eight hound-type dogs were fitted with reflective spheres at palpable landmarks, including the tuber ischium, greater trochanter, cranial dorsal iliac spine, lateral epicondyle of the femur, lateral malleolus, and the base of the fifth metatarsal bone. Each dog was walked up a set of custom made stairs consisting of four steps and then trotted across a level test space. Data were recorded for the right and left pelvic limbs during ascent. Maximum and minimum joint angles and total joint motion were calculated for all joints and evaluated statistically. Results: Pelvic limb joints had a greater total joint excursion during stair ascent. There was greater extension of the coxofemoral and tibiotarsal joints during ascent, whereas the stifle joint had less extension. Maximum flexion of the stifle and tarsal joints was significantly greater in stair ascent. There was not any significant difference between the right and left limbs. Conclusions: All joints of the pelvic limb undergo a greater joint motion to ascend stairs.

Abstract:
Motion of the femur and pelvis during hip flexion has been examined previously, but principally in the sagittal plane and during nonfunctional activities. In this study we examined femoral elevation in the sagittal plane and pelvic rotation in the sagittal and frontal planes while subjects flexed their hips to ascend single steps. Fourteen subjects ascended single steps of 4 different heights leading with each lower limb. Motion of the lead femur and pelvis during the flexion phase of step ascent was tracked using an infrared motion capture system. Depending on step height and lead limb, step ascent involved elevation of the femur (mean 47.2° to 89.6°) and rotation of the pelvis in both the sagittal plane (tilting: mean 2.6° to 9.7°) and frontal plane (listing: mean 4.2° to 11.9°). Along with maximum femoral elevation, maximum pelvic rotation increased significantly (p< .001) with step height. Femoral elevation and pelvic rotation during the flexion phase of step ascent were synergistic (r= .852–.999). Practitioners should consider pelvic rotation in addition to femoral motion when observing individuals’ ascent of steps.

Abstract:
AbstractThree of Petrarch's major prose works in Latin—De otio religioso, De vita solitaria, and Secretum—are treatises dedicated to the topic of solitude as an escape from the negotium of worldly life. An inquiry into Petrarch's understanding of solitude will show, however, that far from representing an idealized withdrawal from engagement in the world, ascesis is a technique employed by Petrarch to construct his own ideal of the public intellectual, disengaged and resistant to structures of coercive authority and power. His reshaping of an ascetic lineage, which puts early Christian authors side by side with writers from the ancient Latin Stoic tradition, may be seen as an attempt to delineate a new, laicized form of monasticism and the ascetic life. In turning to a closer examination of De otio religioso, this paper will emphasize two areas of interest, which seek to support the thesis that Petrarch's pursuit of contemplative life was strategic for the shaping of an uncompromised, intellectual, Christian identity: the presence of an absence, represented by Bruno, founder of the Carthusian order, as a model of ascetic dissent; and the absence of a presence, evoked by a radical reading of the Latin verb vacare with its more kenotic implications.

Abstract:
AbstractThe earliest prologue to the Life of Pachomius constructs the apostle Paul as an exemplary father and argues that Pachomius conforms to such a Pauline model. Prologues composed later make no such comparison but cite Antony as the model ascetic before turning to the narration of Pachomius’s life. This paper follows the Pauline thread of the earliest prologue by examining the use of the figure Paul and Pauline literature in the surviving Vitae. I argue that certain narratives cast Pachomius’s legacy after a Pauline prototype. Paul’s ascent to paradise in 2 Corinthians 12 and Paul’s survey of torments in the Apocalypse of Paul are rewritten in some of the Coptic and Arabic Vitae as episodes in Pachomius’s life. This use of Paul as a prototype for ascetic hagiography creates a vision of ascetic holiness incompatible with that constructed in the Life of Antony. Other narratives in the Pachomian Vitae, however, construct Pachomius after an Antonian prototype and reflect ascetic ideals promoted in the Life of Antony. The paper closes with reflections on possible historical circumstances for the shift from a Pauline model of asceticism to an Antonian one in the composition of Pachomian Vitae.

Abstract:
Meniscus climbing using a fixed body posture has been well documented for various aquatic and neustonic insects, but is not known from small flying insects that inadvertently become trapped on water surfaces. Here, we show that thrips (order Thysanoptera) can ascend a meniscus by arching their non-wetting bodies to translate head-first and upward along a water surface; if initially oriented backwards, they can turn by 180° to ascend head-first, and climb upward on a surrounding boundary. Using variable-concentration sucrose solutions, we show that translational and climbing speeds during meniscus ascent vary inversely with fluid viscosity. Becoming trapped in water is a frequent event for flying insects, and given that most of them are very small, dedicated behaviours to escape water may be commonplace among pterygotes.

Respecting the particularities of each one, we are also dedicated to briefly pointing them out. To this end, we have divided this article into three parts. The first presents general aspects of the concept of Will proposed by Malebranche. The second discusses Schopenhauer's Will to Life concept. In the third, we present a discussion of the different paths they took from a common starting point: the notion of blind will. From this investigation, we support our argument about the similarities and confluences that, however, do not diminish the specificity of each author, especially regarding the results; the Christian leaning toward hedonism, while the atheist leaning toward asceticism.

Abstract:
This article presents a very important topic that aims at the balance of the spiritual life, namely asceticism. Asceticism is the state developed by the divine energies that sustain man's spiritual progress. A believer, the more he practices on the path of doing good, the better and more virtuous he will become. The more he seeks to eliminate sin from his being, the purer and godlier he will become. This exercise is called in spiritual language: asceticism. Man is a reality of divine harmony, but we must keep in mind that this gracious presence cannot be expressed conceptually because it belongs to a transcendental, metaphysical reality. Therefore, Christian asceticism refers to the acquisition and perfection of life in Christ. In this endeavor man is not left alone. God's grace helps him to achieve the state of holiness, of perfection

Abstract:
An electronic device and method for determining the size and degree of packing of the rumen mat in ruminants are described. The mat meter outputs to a chart recorder the distance travelled and the time elapsed for a small weight to ascend through the rumen contents under the constant force of an external weight. From the chart recordings, the rate of ascent (min 100 cm−1) of the weight can be calculated as an index of the degree of packing of the rumen mat in selected strata of the rumen contents. Abstract:
The multifunctional above-knee prosthesis WLP-7R (Waseda Leg Prosthesis - type 7 Refined) described in this study allows amputees to descend and ascend stairs with no external power sources. With the hydraulic circuit mounted in the shank, the ankle joint and the knee joint mutually conterbalance during stance phase in stair walking as well as level walking so that the following performances are obtained. The yielding (flexing) of the knee joint is prevented and smooth advance from stance-phase to swing-phase is realized in level walking. The gradual yielding of the knee joint and the ankle joint while sustaining full body weight is realized in stair descent. Reciprocal stepping with sound and disabled legs during stair ascent is also realised although the powerful extension of the knee joint during stance phase is not possible. The performance of the WLP-7R was examined by a walking experiment in which amputees could descend and ascend the stairs as well as walk on a flat surface after approximately one hour's training.

Abstract:
The occult revival of the later 19th century inherited Neoplatonic and Hermetic ideas of astral ascent and commerce with the planetary spirits, but felt obliged to square these with contemporary discoveries in astronomy. In the 1850s, Andrew Jackson Davis adapted Swedenborgian ideas into a semi-scientific cosmology that served as the norm for spiritualists. In the 1870s, occultism separated from spiritualism and made its own pact with science, with results visible in the works of Emma Hardinge Britten, H. P. Blavatsky, and the Hermetic Brotherhood of Luxor. Outside these well-known movements, Cyrus Teed, known as Koresh, taught that the earth is a concave sphere with the heavenly bodies at the center. His system revived the themes of astral immortality through ascesis and an alchemical relation of humans to a closed cosmos. It was the basis for one of America's more successful utopian communities, which outlasted Teed for more than 50 years.

Abstract:
Results of laboratory experiments are used to determine the morphology and the ascent rate of growing buoyant plumes in a homogeneous, viscous fluid. The plumes were formed by injecting a glucose solution through a small orifice into another glucose solution of different density. Two classes of creeping (low-Reynolds-number) plumes are investigated: (i) diapiric plumes, for which the plume viscosity is approximately equal to the ambient-fluid viscosity, and (ii) cavity plumes, for which the plume fluid is much less viscous than the ambient fluid. Fully developed diapirs consist of a tapered cylindrical stem capped by a mushroom-shaped vortex at its leading edge. Fully developed cavity plumes consist of a nearly spherical chamber connected to the source by a narrow umbilical conduit. It is observed that the ascent velocity of cavity plumes increases with time as t⅖. The ascent velocity of diapirs is found to be proportional to the terminal velocity of a cylinder moving parallel to its axis. The presence of pre-existing conduits alters the morphology of cavity plumes and greatly increases their ascent rate. Fossil conduits act as plume guides by offering low-resistance ascent paths. Finally, a series of experiments have been made on the interaction between cavity plumes and a large-scale background circulation. A low-viscosity plume generated by a source towed steadily through a highly viscous fluid breaks into a chain of regularly spaced, individual cavities, as first demonstrated by Skilbeck & Whitehead. The cavities ascend as an inclined linear array of Stokes droplets. Dimensional analysis is used to derive scaling laws for the cavity volumes and their replication rate in terms of the source parameters and the tow speed. The qualitative results from these experiments generally lend support to the hypothesis that buoyant plumes in the Earth's mantle are the source of hot-spot volcanism. In particular the experiments suggest an explanation for the observation that hot spots remain nearly fixed in the presence of mantle convection.

Abstract:
Being a common daily activity, stair locomotion places much higher loads on the lower limb than level walking does so a better understanding of the biomechanics of this activity is important for evaluation and treatment for patients with lower limb problems. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the three-dimensional dynamics and coordination of the joints of the lower limb during the stance phase of stair ascent and descent. Ten normal young adult subjects were recruited to ascend and descend stairs in a gait laboratory where the three-dimensional kinematic and kinetic data as well as muscle electromyography (EMG) were collected. The sagittal ranges of motion during stance phase of stair ascent were from 1.85° extension to 53.5° flexion for the hip, 13.1° to 60.1° flexion for the knee and 13.8° dorsiflexion to 14.0° plantarflexion for the ankle. Corresponding data for stair descent were 4.78( to 13.16( flexion for the hip, 8.3° to 77.6° flexion for the knee and 18.3° dorsiflexion to 27.4° plantarflexion for the ankle. Maximum extensor moments of 8.5% and 15.6% (Nm/BW/LL) were required at the hip and knee respectively during loading response while 19.4% (Nm/BW/LL) at the ankle shortly before toe-off. During stair descent, maximum extensor moments of about 4.4% were required at the hip during loading response and before toe-off while 13.3% and 15.2% (Nm/BW/LL) at the knee and ankle respectively before toe-off The joint angles, moments, and powers in the frontal and transverse planes were relatively small, except for hip abduction. The hip abductor moments and powers were significantly bigger than those of the knee and ankle in both stair activities. Joint powers and the corresponding muscle activation patterns in stair ascent were significantly different from those in descent, with concentric powers generated mostly during stair ascent and with eccentric powers stair descent. The differences of the movements of the lower limb during stair ascent and descent were due to different safety requirements and kinematic and kinetic constraints from the stairs. The complete description of the biomechanics of the lower extremity while performing stair locomotion will be helpful for the planning and evaluation of treatment programs for patients with lower limb problems.

Abstract:
Abstract This study performs cloud-resolving simulations of cumulus convection over an idealized surface-based convergence zone to investigate the mechanisms and sensitivities of deep convection initiation forced by mesoscale ascent. The surface convergence forms in response to a localized diurnal heating anomaly over an otherwise homogeneous and unheated surface, producing a strong boundary layer updraft over the center of the heat source. This updraft gives rise to a line of cumuli that gradually deepen and, in some cases, transition into deep convection. To statistically investigate the factors controlling this transition, a new thermal-tracking algorithm is developed to follow incipient cumulus cores as they ascend through the troposphere. This tool is used to isolate the impacts of key environmental parameters (cloud-layer lapse rate, midlevel humidity, etc.) and initial core parameters near cloud base (horizontal area, vertical velocity, etc.) on the ultimate cloud-top height. In general, the initial core size determines which thermals in a given cloud field will undergo the deepest ascent, and the sensitivity of cloud depth to initial core parameters increases in environments that are more hostile to deep convection. Diurnal midlevel moistening from detraining cumuli above the convergence line produces a small but robust enhancement in cloud-top height, particularly for smaller cores.

Abstract:
Experimental studies of laminar axisymmetric starting plumes are performed to investigate the dependence of the flow on the Prandtl number, focusing on large Prandtl numbers. Thermal plumes are generated by a small electric heater in a glass tank filled with viscous oils. Prandtl numbers in the range of 7–104 were investigated. Experimental conditions are such that viscosity variations due to temperature differences are negligible. Plumes ascend in two different regimes as a function of distance to source. At short distances, the plumes accelerate owing to the development of the viscous boundary layer. At distances larger than about five times the heater size, the ascent velocity is constant and increases as a function of the Prandtl number, as predicted by theory for steady plumes. This velocity is, within experimental error, proportional to the steady plume centreline velocity.

Abstract:
Abstract. This article discussed how a priest (church elder or overseer) can overcome worldly temptations through three spiritual disciplines or ascesis: prayer, fasting, and inner guarding. This article used the analytical and argumentative methods in literature written by John Chrysostom in his book "On the Priesthood" and the writings of the Church Fathers to contribute to the ministry of a priest. These three points of ascesis produce a holiness which makes him more Christlike. First, through prayer a priest can practice defeating the temptations and passions that arise from within his soul. Second, through fasting he is trained to overcome the temptations and passions that arise from the body or the flesh. Third, through inner vigilance (nepsis) he will be able to overcome the temptations of Satan who has continually seduced humans throughout the ages. These three asceses are aimed at bringing and guiding a priest to live a holy life, that is, against the desires of the flesh or worldly temptations and to produce good fruits that can be practiced in the ministry and society.

Abstract:
Introduction. The subject of study in the article was the experience of the ascent of the famous Byzantine theologian to the mystical-metaphysical contemplation of divine reality, embodied in his book “Chapters on Love”. According to the Orthodox version of the metaphysics of the Way, this ultimate goal can be achieved during life only in the process of hard and practical work of an ascetic, during which the task is set not only to kill worldly desires, but also to ultimately spiritual and moral purification of the monk’s soul. In this small work, Maxim the Confessor described in detail the technology of advancing an ascetic to the last stop and staying in a blissful state of perfect love for God. Materials and Methods. The source of the research was the works of the ancient Indian, Orthodox and Sufi ascetics, which are different versions of the metaphysics of the Way. During the work, mainly thematic and transcendental analysis methods were used, which together made it possible to track the desire of Maxim the Confessor to describe and comprehend the ascent of the Orthodox monk to the mystical-metaphysical contemplation of the Lord. Discussion. The author of the article in numbered and distributed throughout the chapters of the statements of the Byzantine theologian revealed a complex system of mystical and metaphysical views, which can be called the metaphysical theory of theology. From the point of view of modern methodology and philosophy of science, he created effective theoretical constructs “pure mind”, “perfect love”, “selfishness”, “thoughts” and others, which together fully describe the mystical existential reality of a harsh Orthodox monk, which is difficult to reflect by means of language. However, his reasoning is not speculative thoughts. It is quite obvious to the researcher that they are based on rich personal experience and other prominent ascetics of Byzantine Orthodoxy. Results. The study of the soulful book of Maximus the Confessor “Chapters on Love” allows you to advance in understanding one of the most important and the most difficult moments of the Orthodox version of the metaphysics of the Way.
