Abstract:
Was the Byzantine thinker Nicephorus Blemmydes (1197–1272) directly influenced in his views about human “proairesis” by the Stoic Epictetus (50–138 AD) or did he take over his views from the Neoplatonic Simplicius? After exploring Blemmydes’ reception of Epictetus, one can say that Blemmydes drew elements in a brief treatise under the title “De virtute et ascesi” from the mainly Neoplatonic Simplicius, who commented on the handbook by the Stoic Epictetus (50–138 AD). Blemmydes, following Simplicius identifies “ἐφ’ ἡμῖν” with “aftexousion” and he designates “proairesis” as an activity, which emanates from “aftexousion”. Blemmydes shows the moral power of “proairesis” as a transforming factor of human existence and the mediatory factor to the dialectical relation between man and God. For the completion of the study, the following sources have been used: Blemmydes’ De virtute et ascesi, Epictetus’ Handbook, and Neoplatonic Simplicius’ commentaries on the Handbook. I specifically focus on the views of Aristotle, Epictetus, and Neoplatonic Simplicius about “proairesis” and compare the views of Blemmydes to Simplicius’ ideas. I conclude that Blemmydes drew ideas from Simplicius, with regard to human “proairesis” and in the context of the practising and cultivating virtues in everyday life.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to outline an historical-philological analysis of Kierkegaard’s works in order to show through the texts all the possible suggestions and influences that the Danish philosopher could have received from the Christian mystical tradition and also from Christian ascetism. It extends further showing his negative reactions to philosophical mysticism as well. The methodological task of the dissertation is to establish, whereas it is possible, a level of certainty of proofs based on the concept of “pragmatic objectivity” given by the relation between texts read by Kierkegaard and text written by himself insofar as it delineates a conceptual path and a possible new hermeneutical reading of some points of Kierkegaard’s thought and about his anthropological reflexions based on the relationship between God and the “single individual”. First two sections of my dissertation show the connections and the different kinds of mysticism developed in German-Danish idealism (especially the one developed by Franz Baader, Johann Erdmann and Hans Martensen) and in German pietism (especially in Johann Arndt, Philipp J.Spener and Gerhard Tersteegen), that are the two of the most important channels of Kierkegaard’s philosophical and religious education. It also reveals how the Danish thinker reacted to all these interpretation of mystic and mysticism. This part of the research covers the period of Kierkegaard’s life from 1835 to 1846, that is the time of his studies, his dissertation and his “first authorship”, in which from one hand we can find his refusal to the idea of mysticism as he found it in most of German idealism (with some exceptions), from the other hand he revised pietistic mysticism through the question of self-consciousness on introducing his personal concept of “Upbuilding”. In the third and last section of the work it demonstrates how the most remarkable influences from the classic mystic tradition of Christianity are in what many call Kierkegaard’s “second authorship” (Anden forfatterskab, 1847-1851). In fact, we can see in the works of this period the presence of authors like Tauler, Silesius and Fénelon, joined together by Kierkegaard self in his peculiar conception of anthropology, based on the relation between the presence of God’s image (Guds billede) in the man and the assent made by man self “becoming Christian” before God (For Gud), to Christ as the only Model (Forbillede) for Christianity.

Abstract:

Abstract:
2014 - 2015
The purpose of this study is to demonstrate how within the Quaestiones ad Thalassium the monk Massimo the Confessor’s reasoning is structured in two different perspectives: practical philosophy and mystical ascension. The idea behind this type of research is determined by two needs: the first one, obvious and tangible, is based on the scarceness of thorough studies on this worthy philosopher and theologian, whom for a long time was only considered for his suggestive critical interpretation of the Holy Writ; the second one, however, a deeper one, aims to demonstrate how Massimo’s work is characterised by a complex and articulate philosophic framework, which the following research aims to illustrate. In order to obtain a complete study which would render the complexity characterising the monk, the first part of the research Massimo the Confessor- theologian and philosopher focuses on the monk’s personality and its various aspects, by revisiting under a historiographic light his life’s most significant events within their specific historic context (Ch. 1) and by reconstructing what could be considered an ideal corpus of his authentic works (Ch. 2). It seems easy to deduct that, when analysing Massimo’s work and in order to understand its time of writing and its contents, two complimentary approaches can be used: the chronological and the historic-doctrinal one. Each one of his works has been synoptically analysed together with a list of the different editions and translations into the modern tongue. Considering the scarceness of scientific studies which specifically focus on the Quaestiones ad Thalassium, the aim of this thesis is to provide the reader with a genesis of his work in order to trace the overall conceptual structure which sustains the whole study (Ch. 3). In the second part of the study, Quaestiones ad Thalassium an ethical and ascetic essay, the objective is to demonstrate how his work is actually a pedagogic essay, in which Massimo’s aim is to indicate to his interlocutor Talassio the road to mystical ascension. Within the ἀποκρίσεις, as a matter of fact, lie three fundamental elements: the ethical element, the contemplative one, and the theological one, which articulate themselves, in the dialectic πρᾶξις-θεωρία-θεολογία. The essay is therefore primarily aimed to the follower, whose fundamental aspiration needs to be the mystic experience. Through the analysis of the three dimensions (Ch. 1) mentioned earlier, we have illustrated how Massimo is able to progress from the ethic to the contemplative dimension in order to finally reach an understanding of divine reality in a theological context. As a matter of fact the Christian’s main objective is the ascension to perfection, which is made possible by an authentic and active relationship with God. In all of the Confessor’s works, and in the Quaestiones ad Thalassium in particular, the mystical ascension is indicated as feasible for man as he was created «in His own image and likeness» and determined in his own authentic essence by the logos-tropos relationship (Ch. 2). Within this perspective, the understanding of the actual ontological structure of the universe leads to realising how divinisation, the ultimate objective of ascension, is possible for man. Through divinisation, man can recognise himself in both Adam and Christ, and conceive himself as a mediator for a cosmic liturgy, which returns man to the Creator according to His original design. This dissertation thesis, therefore, questions Massimo the Confessor through his works, particularly the Quaestiones ad Thalassium, in order to demonstrate how the monk was a philosopher as well as a theologian, and how he focused his reflections on man’s authentic essence. The aim of this study is to demonstrate that as the doctor answers (responds) to the expectations of society in his task of promoting health, both he and those who are entrusted to him, develop a practice that I call medical asceticism. What the research tries to investigate is the pursuit of a healthy body as an ideal. The research was developed from the analysis of present speeches in platonic texts and its reflections in contemporary medical statements. The theoretical dialogue of the thesis emphasized the Nietzscheâs approach to the truth and moral. The arguments presented are divided in three books: 1- Medical Asceticism: a search of the truth as an ideal; 2- Medical scientific truth and moral and 3- Prognoses and prescriptions. Among the considerations pointed by the thesis, we checked the intersection between the practices of information and medical advisories and the search of a healthy life. The cult of the healthy life seems to be linked to the cult of the medical scientific truth and to the production of adjusted and submissive subjectivities. The medical ascetic ideal, observed in the production and consumption of truths appears like a demonstration of a game of forces, a will that Nietzsche called will to power.

This study proposes to bring in relation properties and themes of heroic mythology and the theatrical career, in the para-theatrical approach, of the Polish director Jerzy Grotowski. The first part of this work explains cultural, social and theoretical sources of Grotowski´s thought and practice, and demonstrates the relationship between his individual searches and his theatrical career. The second one puts in discussion modes to interpret myths in Grotowski´s work, its function, its significance and its influence on different kinds of artistic process: choice and treatment of texts, audience parts, actor´s work on character composition and actor ´s training. Theoretical references about mythical and symbolic questions are extracted from symbolic hermeneutic theory. In terms of conclusion, this dissertation puts in relief similarities between actions in the heroic mythology and Grotowski´s work, fundamentally, sacrificial acts as an way to consolidate an spiritual dimension

To eat or not to eat? To drink or not to drink? What, with whom, when, where and how? These are questions which accompanied the humanity s history, and they also were very significant in the Mediterranean nations cultural context since the first century after Christ. Ascetism became known for the efforts made by metaphysician to reach their spiritual purpose. Nietzsche published a critique on ascetical ideals in the III Dissertation of the Genealogy of Morals because ascesis had taken transcendental life as a reference for all values beyond this life which is immanent. An ascetic metaphysical morality emphasized the dualism this life another life , which Nietzsche contested by stating it had philosophically originated with Plato as morality against nature . Thus, by returning to the cradle of Western culture, Nietzsche propounds a revision of ascesis based on transcendence, immutability, and truth from the standpoint of life, this life a constant flow, concerned exclusively with change, with outward aspects. In a nutshell, such ascesis refers to becoming a follower of Dionysus, to lead a dionysian life: a whirl of forces that continuously come together and apart, creating centres of will to power, giving rise to everything alive or, in other words, everything that appears and disappears into what is commonly called reality . Therefore, anyone willing to go further ahead of what is ordinary in the contemporary world could only demand of oneself the utmost self-overcoming, the utmost self-control in order to attain a quintessential spiritualization of instincts instead of the sterilization that transcendent values have long prescribed to the body as a rule for life. This hypothetical being is embodied in ascetic Nietzsche , here represented as a dionysian ascetic set against the ascetical ideal

Abstract:
Building design codes in the US do not include any consideration of tsunami design, even though past tsunamis have caused significant structural damage in coastal communities. In February 2011 the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) formed a new Tsunami Loads and Effects subcommittee, which spent four years to develop a new chapter for inclusion in the ASCE7-16 Standard, Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures. This new chapter has now been approved by the ASCE7 Main Committee and ASCE7-16 has been published with a new Chapter 6, Tsunami Loads and Effects. In December 2016, ASCE 7–16 was officially adopted by the International Code Council, with the new chapter on Tsunami Loads and Effects, for inclusion in the US model code, IBC 2018. The tsunami design provisions will apply to all coastal communities in California, Oregon, Washington State, Alaska and Hawaii. This paper presents an overview of the new ASCE7-16 Tsunami Loads and Effects design provisions and how they were developed based on field survey observations and laboratory experimentation.

Abstract:
The U.S. Department of Energy (US DOE) Office of Environmental Management, Technology Innovation and Development is supporting a multi-National Laboratory effort to develop the Advanced Simulation Capability for Environmental Management (ASCEM). ASCEM is an emerging state-of-the-art scientific approach and software infrastructure for understanding and predicting contaminant fate and transport in natural and engineered systems. These modular and open-source high performance computing tools and user interfaces will facilitate integrated approaches that enable standardized assessments of performance and risk for EM cleanup and closure decisions. The ASCEM team recognized that engaging end-users in the ASCEM development process would lead to enhanced development and implementation of the ASCEM toolsets in the user community. End-user involvement in ASCEM covers a broad spectrum of perspectives, including: performance assessment (PA) and risk assessment practitioners, research scientists, decision-makers, oversight personnel, and regulators engaged in the US DOE cleanup mission. End-users are primarily engaged in ASCEM via the ASCEM User Steering Committee (USC) and the ‘user needs interface’ task. Future plans also include user involvement in demonstrations of the ASCEM tools. This paper will describe the details of how end users have been engaged in the ASCEM program and will demonstrate how this involvement has strengthened both the tool development and community confidence. ASCEM tools requested by end-users specifically target modeling challenges associated with US DOE cleanup activities. The demonstration activities involve application of ASCEM tools and capabilities to representative problems at DOE sites. Selected results from the ASCEM Phase 1 demonstrations are discussed to illustrate how capabilities requested by end-users were implemented in prototype versions of the ASCEM tool.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper presents the development and preliminary validation of a control interface for a transfemoral prosthesis that enables EMG-based control of a powered knee during stair ascent. The approach uses results from non-amputee gait studies of stair ascent in the design of a control architecture that enables EMG modulation of knee torque in a manner biomechanically similar to that exhibited by non-amputee subjects. The myoelectric torque controller is formulated with a finite-state linear impedance model in stance and swing. The stance phase is modulated by surface EMG signals co-activated by antagonist residuum muscles. Preliminary results with a sound-limb subject using a knee immobilizer indicate that the EMG-based control architecture has the potential to enable the amputee to directly generate torque commands appropriate for stair ascent using an actively powered artificial limb.
