McCarthy, Mark R. "As Good as it Gets: Redefining Survival through Post-Race and Post-Feminism in Apocalyptic Film and Television." Scholar Commons, 2018. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/7196.

Full text
Abstract:
Concentrating on six representative media sites, 28 Days Later (2002), Dawn of the Dead (2004), Land of the Dead (2005), Children of Men (2007), Snowpiercer (2013), and one television series The Walking Dead (2010-present), this dissertation examines the strain of post-millennial apocalyptic media emphasizing a neo-liberal form of collaboration as the path to survival. Unlike traditional collaboration, the neo-liberal construction centers on the individual’s responsibility in maintaining harmony through intra-group homogeny. Through close textual analysis, critical race theory, and feminist media studies, this project seeks to understand how post-racial and post-feminist representational strategies elide inequality and ignore tensions surrounding racial or gender differences to create harmony-through-homogeny in popular apocalyptic film and television.

Abstract:
This chapter proposes that some snowclones (schematic stock phrases) display some degree of proverbiality to the extent that it can be argued that they occupy a grey zone between proverbs proper and semi-schematic idioms. Drawing on theoretical insights from construction grammar and cognitive-semantic approaches to socio-cultural cognition, this chapter also presents three case studies of snowclones within the English language that are based on corpus-data and corpus-linguistic methodology. More specifically, this chapter studies patterns of use, such as productivity, epistemic status marking, and co-occurrence with co-textual topics, of the only good X is a dead X, one does not simply X into Y, and in X no one can hear you Y so as to address their potential proverbial nature.

Full text
Abstract:
Dead-time effects of microchannel plates (MCPs) are due to the recharging time of the semiconducting inner wall of individual microchannels. To study the dependence of dead-time effects on the area of illumination, circular apertures of different size are imaged onto the curved-channel microchannel plate (C-MCP) using ultraviolet light (257.3 nm). It is found that an independent paralyzable counter (IPC) model, which assumes that individual microchannels of the C-MCP behave as independent paralyzable counters with a fixed dead time, agrees well with experimental results. Except for the case of a small illuminated area, the variance data as well as the mean agree well with theoretical predictions up to a certain level of illumination. However, above this level of illumination the response of C-MCP becomes highly saturated and the IPC model no longer gives good predictions. From this investigation we may conclude that the apparent coupling between microchannels observed in previous investigations1 is largely due to the complex structure of the MCP assembly, at least in the operational sense, rather than due to the intrinsic property of the MCP.

Abstract:
As one of the types of electric motors, DC motors are presented, a class of motors that is commonly used in torque and speed control systems. The control of these motors in real applications is affected by system nonlinearities, such as the dead zone, which limits the motor to fulfill its task with precision since it disables the motor movement for certain applied inputs. Thus, control methods need to be implemented to compensate it. Three modern control methods generate good compensation results: artificial neural networks, fuzzy logic and sliding mode control. Thus, this study aims to perform a review of the available literature on the use of these methods in the compensation of the dead zone in direct current motors.

In 2018 26th International Conference on Nuclear Engineering. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/icone26-82098.

Full text
Abstract:
The main objective of this work is to produce an optimal modeling for our aged Planar-HPGe detector using Monte Carlo method (MC). That optimization included the analysis of the germanium dead (inactive) layer thickness for our old detection system (planar-HPGe detector). DL is one of the important parameters needed in order to obtain the smallest discrepancy between simulated and experimental measurements of detector efficiency. Also, precise determination of 235U enrichment for UO2 samples which is necessary for purposes of nuclear materials verification in the field of nuclear safeguards. The thickness of Germanium dead layer (DL) can be vary by time as it is not well known due to the existence of a transition zone where photons are strongly attenuated and absorbed, that cannot contribute to the total photon energy absorption which causes a significant decrease in efficiency. Therefore, using data provided by manufacturers since long years (manufacture date) in the detector simulation model is not convenient. As a result, some strong discrepancies appear between measured and simulated efficiency, in addition to that non-accurate results for 235U enrichment determination. The Monte Carlo method applied to overcome this difficulty was to vary the thickness of dead layer step by step in simulation, a good agreement (minimum deviation) between estimated and experimental efficiency was reached when a suitable germanium dead layer thickness was chosen. Calculations and measurements were performed for radioactive nuclear material samples in the form of UO2 powder with different sizes and enrichments at different locations, under different gamma-lines emitted after a-decay of the 235U nuclei. Results indicated that a good agreement between simulated and measured efficiencies is obtained using a value for the germanium dead layer thickness approximately (2.45 mm) six in comparison with (0.389 mm) provided by the detector manufacturer.

In ASME 2006 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. ASMEDC, 2006. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2006-15245.

Full text
Abstract:
Industrial processes with large and varying dead time are difficult to control and sustain a good controller performance over a wide range of process conditions. Since Dynamic Matrix Control is based on sampled-data model identification, and online inverse calculations are avoided, adaptation of the original model is not performed in commercial solutions. This paper presents an on-line adaptive form of the DMC control based on the Smith Predictor compensation strategy for processes with large dead time that does not require recalculating the inverse of the process matrix. The matrix form of the Smith Predictor was modeled in software and implemented in a lab scale continuously stirred tank reactor, where actual process noise was present. The adaptive algorithm included a Mamdani-type fuzzy inference system to modify the size of the dead time matrix. Implementation results demonstrated the algorithm ability to compensate for large dead time emulating the response of the non-delayed process. At the same time, the controller is able to adjust the size of the delay based on process response.

Abstract:
Latin America has a comparative advantage in deforestation compared to other forms of climate change mitigation. Thus, to the extent that Latin America should engage in mitigation, the optimal climate change policy should manage these advantages by generating incentives in Latin America to deal with forestry. This paper describes the problem of deforestation and studies the market failures that arise in relation to forestry emission problems, analyzing them from a global public good perspective. The paper additionally describes other problems related to forestry emission issues and presents a non-exhaustive review of the solutions currently proposed to address this issue. The paper concludes with policy recommendations.
