Abstract:
The following paper documents Meredith Harper’s internship from May 2012 to August 2012 at the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans, LA as part of the degree requirements for the Master of Arts in Arts Administration. The Contemporary Arts Center (CAC) is the only non-collecting, multi-disciplinary arts center in New Orleans, and has worked to present the very best of the "art of now" to the New Orleans community since 1976. This paper is written from the point of view of an arts administrator observing the organization as an outsider. This paper will discuss the responsibilities and duties of the internship, focused through the lens of organizational development, and examine the CAC’s institutional effectiveness by identifying strengths and providing solutions for areas needing improvement.

Abstract:
This study is undertaken in response to the issue of incorporating traditional arts management effectively in online arts management via the websites of arts organizations. The aim is to investigate the introduction and implementation of websites in order to suggest effective and efficient approaches of management. This thesis contributes to online management and will enhance its perspective and enlarge its practice. The study presents the design and development of content analysis to analyse the content of websites in order to create both quantitative and qualitative measuring tools that are unlike currently available commercial evaluation tools, which use purely quantitative and automatic measures. The sample consists of 102 arts organization websites from six countries: Australia, Canada, France, South Korea, UK, and USA. In total seventeen arts organization websites from each country from the Yahoo regional directory have been examined. In this study, the website content analysis applied describes preliminary data that will shed some light on the current state of arts management, combining both on and offline application. The thesis articulates the three key functions that online and offline integrated arts management must incorporate in order to increase the value of utility and quality of their services delivered to audiences via the website. The framework of this study provides: 1. interactive communication dimensions between arts organizations and audiences via the website, 2. e-commerce features applicable to the website of arts organizations, and 3. other important and relevant features relating to arts management in websites in order to enforce the appropriate selection and allocation of different services, and to dynamically adapt to changes within those organizations. One of the most important contributions of this study may be that it has value for both academic and practical purposes in the implementation of arts management. As a result of this study, low levels of interactivity were identified in arts websites. This result suggests that online arts marketing is not as interactive as it could be, but undergoes a technological innovation phase towards more developed exploitation. In terms of e-commerce, successful introduction and adoption of websites has been identified. Other traditional arts management features that were not included in interactivity and e-commerce were well represented in the content of websites. The outcome confirms the potential of the website in arts management as an indispensable venue for interactive communication, e-commerce, and other important arts management tasks, such as arts education. By using content analysis, this study provides an evaluative measure for arts organizations that wish to use their websites more effectively, and it also affords a perspective on the current state of online and offline integrated arts management. The result of this study shows that arts management in the virtual venue is the same, or at least similar, to the real venue, and that websites allow arts organizations to coordinate online and offline integrated marketing management. This exploration of little known areas shows what visitors to the website actually communicate and contribute, which indicates that there is ample room for development and research in this area.

Swan, Caitlin. "Arts participation and career preparedness| A pragmatic approach to assessing arts benefits." Thesis, California State University, Long Beach, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10261142.

Abstract:

As the political and economic landscape of the United States shifts in coming years, American society’s perception of the arts will likely change as well. Arts advocates must be ready to adapt their arguments for arts’ value to changing societal priorities. This paper summarizes the two leading frameworks for current arts advocacy arguments: extrinsic benefits and intrinsic benefits. The paper then introduces practical benefits, a pragmatic third framework for arts advocacy that focuses on skills gained through the creation of collaborative art that prepare participants for careers in the creative class, as defined by Richard Florida. The paper uses student-run theatre organizations on college campuses as incubators and case studies for these benefits, using original ethnographic research and surveys to develop assessment protocols for these benefits, with the intention of growing their applicability to larger and more varied arts organizations.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Formal art education equips students with skills to produce artworks. A formal art education may increase the opportunity for employment, however, art-related employment is very limited. Art graduates would be better equipped to market and manage art establishments or their own careers if art education were to be supplemented with basic business skills. Artists who wish to earn unsupplemented incomes from their art should undertake to acquire business acumen. This includes being presentable to the market place in attitude and appearance. It also includes aptitude in art, marketing and management. Role models and non-models of success and failure in business should also be observed. Art graduates should adopt applicable tried and tested business methods. Good marketing is a mix of business activities which identifies and creates consumer needs and wants. Marketing activities involve research, planning, packaging, pricing, promoting and distributing products and services to the public to create exchanges that satisfy individual and organisational objectives. Art products include artworks, frames, art books and art materials. Art-related services include the undertaking of commissions, consulting, teaching, free parking, convenient shopping hours, acceptance of mail or telephone orders, exhibitions, ease of contact, approval facilities, wrapping, delivery, installations (picture hanging), quotations, discounts, credit facilities, guarantees, trade-ins, adjustments and restorations. Good management is a mix of business activities which enables a venture to meet the challenges of supply and demand. There is a blueprint for management competence. The three dimensions of organisational competence are collaboration, commitment and creativity. Self-marketing and management is an expression of an artist's most creative being. It is that which can ensure and sustain recognition and income. Artists, like other competent organisations and entrepreneurs from the private sector, should operate with efficient manufacturing, marketing, management and finance departments. They are also equally important and therefore demand equal attention. Artistic skill together with business acumen should equip the artist to successfully compete in the market place. There are no short-cuts to becoming an artist but there are short-cuts to becoming a known and financially stable artist. Understanding marketing and management could mean the difference between waiting in poverty and frustration for a "lucky break" (which may only happen after an artists's death) and taking control. Success should be perpetuated through continuous effort.

Evans, Graeme L. "Planning for the arts : an urban renaissance? : a critique of arts policy and town planning and their relationship." Thesis, City University London, 1997. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/8273/.

Full text
Abstract:
The study examines the development of arts policy and town planning in the United Kingdom and investigates their relationship in the provision of arts and cultural amenity in urban contexts. The historic evolution of arts planning is taken through the pre and post-Welfare State periods, concentrating on national arts and related environmental, urban and economic policies. The evolution of town planning in Britain is assessed both in terms of urban policy and planning and as they affect arts provision and development. The position of London and the 'regions' is assessed in terms of the distribution of arts resources, in the light of the Arts Council's 'Glory of the Garden' strategy (1984) and subsequent initiatives and this is extended to the increasing influence of European policy through cultural and economic development programmes. The adoption of economic rationales for arts provision and investment is assessed in terms of the shift towards a cultural industries approach to local economic development. Arts-led tourism and the use of cultural attractions as part of inward investment and image improvement strategies are contrasted with the provision of local arts facilities, taking the example of the arts centre and workspace for artist and crafts producer. The application of planning standards for leisure and recreation is evaluated in terms of arts amenity planning and the relative outcomes of arts versus sports provision. Two surveys of London local authorities assess the adoption of arts and urban regeneration measures and the place of arts amenities in local land-use plans. The results are then compared with other citiesin the UK and overseas. A detailed analysis of one London borough, Isli ngton, is made in terms of arts policy and provision in the context of the national planning regimes operating during the 1980s. A local cultural quarter, Clerkenwell, is then investigated in terms of the impact of such policy and planning changes on artist, crafts and other cultural production and premises usage. The thesis develops the case for the utilisation of arts planning standards and the results suggest an integrated policy and planning approach to local arts provision, and to economic and cultural development, at both local and regional levels.

Schindeler, Marda, and University of Lethbridge Faculty of Arts and Science. "Alberta performing arts policy." Thesis, Lethbridge, Alta. : University of Lethbridge, Faculty of Arts and Science, 1998, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10133/77.

Full text
Abstract:
Alberta's first arts legislation, the Cultural Development Act, was passed in 1946. It was followed by numerous policy initiatives to support the arts, including creation of facilities for training of artists, development of agencies and agreements to deal with arts funding, enactment of regulations to guide arts institutions, and creation of various Departmental structures depending on organizational location of this policy sector. The thesis examines the historical evolution of performing arts policy in Alberta from 1905 to 1997 to identify government activities, shifts in policy-making, and methods of implementation. The study utilizes Paul Sabatier's advocacy coalition approach, which treats public policy as determined by the dynamics of the advocacy coalition within a policy sector and the manner in which external factors and system parameters steer policy development. This study concludes that Alberta performing arts policy has largely developed within the context of meta public policies emphasizing economic development and provincial statebuilding.

Baldin, Andrea <1984&gt. "Three essays on revenue management in nonprofit performing arts organizations." Doctoral thesis, Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10579/10310.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this dissertation is to demonstrate the effectiveness of revenue management (RM) techniques in nonprofit performing arts organizations, although these organizations are characterized by multiple and conflicting objectives other than revenue. Indeed, a considerable amount of RM literature has been dedicated to issues detectable in for-profit industries that are mature users of RM, such as the trasportation and hospitality industries. Therefore, contextualizing the theory and practice of RM in the field of performing arts requires a special attention as it is necessary to consider the peculiarities of this sector: the educational function it performs, a service offered that lacks standardization and the uncertain nature of the demand for creative goods. The dissertation is composed of three papers, each of which examines a RM-type problem topic that a nonprofit theatre may face. The first paper investigates customers’ choice behaviour on theater ticket purchase. In particular, it analyzes the extent to which the different attributes that are source of price discrimination affect the choice of the ticket, and how this effect differs among the theatregoers, assuming heterogeneity in preferences. To this purpose, two modelling approaches, namely multinomial logit (with socio-demographic characteristics) and latent class are applied to a dataset for 2010-2013 from the sale system of the Royal Danish National Theatre. The second paper tackles the issue of identifying the most efficient subset of the events scheduled by a theatre, to offer as a subscription. Given the multi-objective nature of nonprofit performing arts organizations, an integrated model that make use of a probabilistic approach and super-efficiency data envelopment analysis is formulated. The results of different simulations are presented. Moreover, an econometric analysis is carried out to obtain some insights into what determines the efficiency level of a subscription. The third paper develops a multi-objective optimization model that simultaneously considers pricing and seat allocation, integrating the demand forecast with a customer choice model. The proposed model is validated with booking data from the Royal Danish Theatre during the period 2010-2013. Results obtained show the potential of the model in assisting theatre manager in setting price and defining the configuration of the seating area.

Frew, Robert Ian. "New approaches to understanding management and leadership in the performing arts." Thesis, City University London, 2005. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/8495/.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent years, debates about leadership and management in the UK arts and cultural sector have often focussed on a cultural crisis and by implication a crisis in leadership. Many of the performing arts companies described in this thesis produce world-class creative works, high-quality performances, and are well managed and led. Against this backdrop it was considered that a new approach to understanding management and leadership in the performing arts was required. Historically, management theorists have focussed upon organisational dynamics, organisational framework, management control and work processes with an emphasis on using quantitative analytical techniques. However, modem management theorists emphasise organisational. effectiveness with a focus on key strategic issues and leadership. Interviewing executive leaders on key strategic issues not organisational and process issues, by naturalistic inquiry, forms the basis of a methodology that can provide a new understanding of management and leadership issues. A multi-dimensional qualitative research methodology was developed that used thematic analysis, descriptive research and case study methods. A grounded theory approach also allowed syntheses to be made between key research issues and thematic elements as an aid to theory development. Research themes included leadership skills, artistic risk in a culturally diverse society, government funding of UK world-class companies, and a preferred executive leadership model emerged. New areas of research were identified that could extend the methodology into: middle-ranking arts companies, the museums and galleries sectors, other cultural sectors, and corporate governance issues. In conclusion, no evidence was found of a leadership crisis in the performing arts, though issues and concerns were raised about the role of the chairman of the board of trustees. In the long-term, however, there is the possibility that companies may face leadership succession problems, declining subsidy, and compliance pressures following new charities legislation. Researching key issues provides a basis for understandino the complexities of leadership in the perforining arts, funding, the wider socio-economic influences, and aid the development of training programmes that will provide future inspirational leaders with the necessary mix of skills and competencies.

Carroll, Ed. "Lifelong learning in the arts : policy and practice in Ireland." Thesis, City University London, 2002. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/7583/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study will examine the conditions impinging on lifelong learning systems to foster participation in the political, social economic and cultural life of society. The research will monitor the manner in which policy and systems of lifelong learning become more cognisant of and responsive to the needs and entitlements of the human person. The aim of the study is to investigate the distinctive role played by the arts in effecting a cultural shift in the provision of lifelong learning. It will seek to bring a distinctive contribution to our understanding of the part played by the arts in giving people an authentic share in society. 'The arts', reflected in events, processes and manifestations occurring in non-formal settings, are espoused as a significant place where some individuals and communities discover a place to participate meaningfully in society. It is not possible to adequately present this study in isolation from the policy and systems of lifelong learning. These policies and systems have come under increasing pressure to create the conditions for greater linkages between the aims and objectives of education, training and employment measures. The rationale for a convergence of education, training and employment aims will be explored, and the adequacy of an approach centred on integration and collaboration will be assessed. The analysis employed in the study was undertaken between 1994-2000. It was based on a process of theory testing utilising four methods of investigation and examination: (1) a review of national and international literature, (2) a survey, (3) a questionnaire and (4)specific focus group exercises. At the outset, new base line data was collated on nonformal learning provisions, i.e. Irish Post Leaving Certificate courses and community arts learning programmes. Post Leaving Certificate courses are state-led and take place within the education system. The community arts learning programmes under investigation are arts sector-led and broadly located within the state training system. A standardised classification system was developed that enabled the documentation of four learning programmes. The study will contend that changes and adaptations to the structures and systems of accreditation and certification are necessary to accommodate non-formal learning opportunities. Finally, an analysis will be undertaken of existing structures and systems, with particular focus on education and training practices within the community and youth arts sector. The distinctive role that the arts can play in effecting change in the culture of lifelong learning will be affirmed.

Abstract:
A training method utilized in a few martial arts was found to agree strongly with current cognitive psychology theory. Further study extracted a procedural model for learning a complex set of whole-body, dyadic motor skills involving high-speed, interactive, continuous situation assessment and decision making. A broader literature survey found relevance in several fields of research, supporting the definition of four performance dimensions in the activity. Data collected from one experienced student partnering with each of ten students of various experience levels was analyzed on these four dimensions. These dimensions were found sufficient to show both individual differences and changes across an instructional intervention. Strong correlations found under linear regression were supportive of anecdotal evidence from the model??s long empirical history in training. Data provided evidence of a self-organizing dynamic emerging from the interaction of a dyad participating in this activity, and of individual differences in cognitive resource management dynamically setting allocation priorities among specific aspects of a complex motor/cognitive activity. Highly individual responses demonstrate a mechanism for insight into students that are difficult to read. Numerous comparisons and contrasts show interactivity of performance dimensions. Impact is foreseen for research, training and testing in motor learning fields, as well as situation awareness, decision making and military tactical training. Further research is recommended to replicate these findings, test hypotheses derived from them, and to extend testing of the drill-network model into other fields of learning.

Abstract:

Operating within the overlapping and sometimes-conflicting spheres of the tourist and the local, arts organizations in Hawai‘i face shared challenges in the form of Hawai‘i’s brand, limited resources, and accessibility issues. To identify common successes and struggles in the face of those challenges, this thesis conducts case studies of four key Honolulu arts organizations: the Honolulu Museum of Art, the ARTS at Marks Garage, POW! WOW! Hawai‘i, and the Honolulu Biennial Foundation. Results show that these organizations can best overcome their common challenges by pooling resources in the form of knowledge, money, space, and people; advocating for cultural tourism; and investing in long-term collaborative programming and arts education initiatives.

Torre, Gemma. "Management of government archives in Italy." Thesis, IMT Alti Studi Lucca, 2018. http://e-theses.imtlucca.it/243/1/Torre_phdthesis.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
The research has affirmed the value of archives among other cultural objects because archives are a vital part of the national identity, but not just that. In fact, the good management of the res publica and an efficient administration pass through the proper documents conservation as the life source of government bodies. Starting from an archival perspective, the research object points to archives as institutions and offices of Public Administration rather than the peculiarity of the documentation which they preserve. Therefore, the analysis is focused on the internal organisational structures where the two souls of archives - one administrative and one cultural - came to light. In this sense, archives are a point of intersection of multiple issues for their intrinsic nature. The work is based on a literature review in order to contextualise Italian archives in the international scenario. The comparative analysis focused especially on the UK reality and the consecutive case study performed in Tuscany allowed the definition of the paths should be covered in order to improve national government archives. The research allowed the possibility to improve the management of archival structures starting from the strength of the national system, as the presence of a legislation with a good basis on the archival theory. In this context, the archive director emerged as the figure able to synthesise the archival knowledge and the managerial skills, aware of the necessity to coordinate multiple professional background and technological resources. This figure is the one who can put in practice the optimisation of what is defined as the archive management starting from the deep knowledge of the ongoing reality and thanks to the cooperation with the Superintendencies. In the light of above, a conclusion is the announcement of the need to design a plan of continuing professional development in archive management for administrative staff as well as for legislators, accepting the dynamicity of current scenarios and with the goal to improve national government archives.

Richardson, Elise. "The Arts Council of New Orleans: An Internship Report." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2014. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/aa_rpts/161.

Full text
Abstract:
The Arts Council of New Orleans is the official arts agency of New Orleans, located at 935 Gravier Street. The organization supports and develops the arts community through many different programming initiatives, including administering grants, managing a monthly Arts Market, and providing business training to artists. In this internship report, I discuss my role within the organization during my internship, which began in January 2013 and lasted through June 2013. I then analyze my observations of the organization’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, and provide recommendations for improving the Arts Council’s operations based on best practices and expert literature in the field of nonprofit management. The Arts Council hired a new CEO in May of 2013, after a seven-year period of operating under interim management. With a permanent leader now in place, the organization is in a position to apply my recommendations so it can grow into a stronger arts agency, and better serve the New Orleans community.

Abstract:
Today’s arts nonprofits are navigating a challenging landscape where competition for funding and audiences is on the rise. To intensify this issue, rates of participation in the arts have declined and funders have raised the bar requiring that nonprofits demonstrate higher levels of accountability concerning results and mission achievement. These conditions have caused nonprofits to assess their leadership, community relevancy, program effectiveness, and management practices. Consequently, audience engagement has become a prominent topic in the field, with a growing body of research and varying perspectives. Arts nonprofits are experimenting with an array of strategies and activities to increase participation. New Orleans’ Contemporary Arts Center (CAC) developed a new Strategic Framework Plan and eliminated its larger debt in 2012, and is appointing a new Executive Director. This report examines the CAC’s history and current situation, and explores ways the organization can further its institutional growth and cement its place within the community.

Abstract:
The managers of professional performing arts organisations are faced with a unique dilemma. They must support their artistic personnel, who are typically driven by the quest for new, challenging and experimental works, while achieving the economic success necessary for the continued viability of their organisations. Failing to effectively manage this artistic-economic dichotomy can result in a conflict between artists and managers that threatens the long-term survival of these organisations. There is a clear need, therefore, for arts managers to foster an organisational climate that minimises conflict, while promoting organisational citizenship behaviours (OCBs) such as sportsmanship (a willingness to tolerate less than ideal circumstances without complaining) and courtesy (a willingness to show sensitivity towards others and actively avoid creating problems for co-workers). The main aim of the present study was to examine the extent to which factors such as organisational structure, organisational culture and employees’ motivational orientation influence people’s perceptions of their job scope (as indicated by high levels of task variety, task identity, task significance, autonomy and feedback from the job), a construct which has been found to reduce organisational conflict and increase employees’ propensity to display OCBs. While these relationships have been suggested in previous research, they have not been tested in a performing arts industry context. The data analysed in the present study suggested an enjoyment motivational orientation, a challenge motivational orientation, an organic culture and formalisation positively influenced perceptions of job scope, which, in turn, positively influenced both OCBs (sportsmanship and courtesy). A challenge orientation also had a positive impact on sportsmanship, while sportsmanship positively and directly influenced courtesy. Centralisation was negatively related to perceived job scope and sportsmanship, although it had a positive impact on courtesy. Conflict was negatively influenced by formalisation and by an organic culture, but was positively influenced by a hierarchal culture.
