Abstract:
The development of Discipline-based Art Education (DBAE) has focused attention on curricular structure, especially as it relates to the concept of students' creative expression. Creative self-expression, the focus of many school art programs, is to encourage students' art production. Discipline-based art education in contrast strives to develop students' artistic expression. Achievement of artistic expression requires conceptually focused instruction of art content from four art disciplines, art history, art criticism, studio production, and aesthetics. A discipline-based lesson can be examined for the way artistic expression is fostered as a part of production. Specific examples drawn from one lesson are used to illustrate that artistic expression can be recognizable, sensitive to instruction, and subject to evaluation.

Abstract:
This thesis examines a re-indigenizing process facilitated through traditional and computer-based media artistic expressive forms. My recent discovery of my Canadian Indigenous ancestry has brought me to investigate how my identity as a contemporary artist has been impacted by my exploration of Indigenous forms of expression that were lost to me due to my grandmother’s assimilation to a homogenized Canadian ideal. I examined the relationships between my contemporary artistic practice and Indigenous perspectives to develop an exhibition of work that bridged computer-based media and traditional Métis beading practice. My artistic influences and a descriptive account of my current artistic practices is synthesised with my new Indigenous knowledge of identity and expression, which not only produced several works of art, but also generated new programmatic methodologies and a computer-based media toolkit that can aid Indigenous artists with developing computer and media based art projects.

Elliott, Jason Lynn. "AquaMOOSE 3D: a Constructionist Approach to Math Learning Motivated by Artistic Expression." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/7469.

Full text
Abstract:
Research has shown that students interest in academics declines significantly with age, especially in the areas of math and science (Kahle et al., 1993; Wigfield, 1994; Wigfield and Eccles, 1992). One approach to combating this problem is by using new technologies to engage students who otherwise would not be interested in learning. In the AquaMOOSE project, 3D graphical technology is combined with a constructionist learning philosophy to create an environment where students can creatively explore new mathematical concepts. The AquaMOOSE socio-technical system has been developed using an iterative design process. Three formal studies were conducted to assess the effectiveness of the system, as well as several smaller scale evaluations. The first study was conducted during a six-week summer program where students were able to use the AquaMOOSE system during their free time. The second study explored different learning issues in the context of a comparison-class study at a local high school where one section learned about polar coordinates using standard curriculum materials and an equivalent section learned the same material using a curriculum designed specifically around the AquaMOOSE system. The final study of the AquaMOOSE system was in an eight-week after-school program at a local high school where a balance between structure and creative freedom was explored. In this thesis, the iterative design and evaluation of the AquaMOOSE socio-technical system is presented. Evidence from this process is used to suggest implications of using 3D technology and constructionist philosophy for teaching complex mathematical content. The findings presented address issues of using constructionist learning environments for complex content and the tradeoffs of using 3D technology for educational systems.

Abstract:
Peculiarities of the expression of artistic individuality of future teachers are analysed in the dissertation. Problem of the investigation has been formulated: in what way and what impact the musical activity can exert on artistic individuality of future music teachers and to what extent this impact can be optimised. The model of the expression of artistic individuality of future music teachers has been created and substantiated both theoretically and empirically. The model encompasses the components of reflexivity, creativity, high artistic value and responsibility. Manifestations of artistic individuality in musical activity of future teachers and the level of expression of these manifestations, interrelations between components of artistic individuality and their dependence on the external factors (the type of higher education institution that provides different musical education (university, non-university) and the year the students are in, as well as internal factors (musical abilities, artistic experiences and recognition of the significance of values) have been revealed by the diagnostic examination. Statistically significant changes in the expression of artistic individuality of future music teachers have been determined and strategies for developing the expression of artistic individuality of future music teachers have been brought out and tested in the course of the education project. Lowe, James Joseph Greaves. "Freedom of artistic expression under Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/23442.

Full text
Abstract:
Under the auspices of Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights the right to freedom of expression is said to be held by everyone and to include the freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart information and ideas without interference by public authority, subject to the limitation clauses outlined in Article 10(2). Whilst the text of Article 10 therefore makes no explicit reference to specifically artistic expression, the European Court of Human Rights has, in its interpretation of ‘information and ideas’, nevertheless accepted that artistic expression does indeed fall within the ambit of Article 10’s protection of freedom of expression. However, despite the Court recognising artistic expression as a form of expression within the framework of Article 10, conclusions reached in the early case law concerning the issue of controversial artworks would appear to suggest the judicial creation of an implicit hierarchy of expression under which artistic expression is seen to enjoy a relatively low level of protection. Given the non-differentiated articulation of the right to freedom of expression enounced in the text of Article 10, the creation of such a hierarchy of expression is therefore a cause for doctrinal concern. In seeking to assess this misnomer the thesis’ analysis of the treatment of artistic expression under Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights may be distilled in to two component parts. Firstly, a theoretical basis will be established from which artistic expression may be located within the context of the discourse pertaining to freedom of expression more generally. Having confirmed that, whilst of a distinctive, sui generis nature, artistic expression may indeed constitute ‘expression’ for the purposes of freedom of expression doctrine the second part of the thesis will examine the particular question of artistic expression’s treatment under Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

Warner, Charles David. "Opinions of Administrators, Faculty, and Students Regarding Academic Freedom and Student Artistic Expression." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/27553.

Full text
Abstract:
The primary purpose of this study was to compare the opinions of community college administrators, art faculty members, and art students concerning institutional options and policy alternatives for the exhibition of controversial student art work in the community colleges of Maryland. The research questions addressed the concept of academic freedom, the principle of institutional neutrality, and the context of the presentation. Three community colleges were selected for the study. Data were collected in two stages. Information gathered in the first stage of this project was used to collect data during the second stage. In phase one the researcher went to the three schools and conducted individual interviews to determine the perceived facts surrounding a controversial art incident. The researcher recorded what the participants thought were the issues that contributed to the controversy, what principles they thought were employed in the solution, and reactions to how it was handled. The researcher prepared a brief and objective case study of each incident. Phase two of this project involved the researcher taking the case studies back to the three sites for group interviews. There were three group interviews conducted at each of the three community colleges. One group was made up of two administrators, another group included two or three arts faculty members, and the third group involved four or more art students. Each group was asked to respond to questions stemming from the research areas of academic freedom, institutional neutrality, and context of the presentation. Each group was asked to comment regarding the issues, the administrative response, and concerns in the three case studies. Each group was asked to chose a policy from a list of three options for covering controversial student art exhibits. The results show different opinions exist between administrators, art faculty, and art students concerning academic freedom, institutional neutrality, and the exhibition of controversial student art. It is important to note however, the opinions do not divide precisely along administrator, faculty, and student classification lines. Most of the participants selected the policy which provided for group discussion during any controversy over student art. There is a need for educational institutions to become proactive in this area.

Go, Karen Miao. "Artistic expression, domestic desires : Vanessa Bell's vision of modern life & modern art." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2006. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/252004.

Full text
Abstract:
This PhD examines the life and work of a remarkable woman – a mother, lover, artist, friend, daughter and sister who did not follow the rules of any establishment and liver her life as she saw fit. Vanessa Bell was a woman who broke the rules but remained almost entirely transfixed by a world dominated by domesticity.  As this PhD will show, radical choices, innovative art, and intellectual stimulation can co-exist with the domestic world and in a person devoted to domesticity. This PhD questions what it means to be a feminist and an avant-garde artist in the early 20th century. It questions how art history has treated the roles available to women and to the space they occupied. For Bell, art was not a way to live vicariously in other worlds; it was always a reflection of her world and her reality interpreted through her kaleidoscopic vision. For a painter interested in modern artistic movements, limiting one’s scope to the home would have seemed a defeat of one’s ideals since it was not in the home that most avant-garde artists saw modern life taking place. Yet it was the home and domestic life from which Bell drew inspiration and where she saw modern life taking place. This PhD examines Vanessa Bell’s relationship to domesticity in four sections. The first discusses her work in the decorative arts and its influence on her work in the fine arts. The second deals with how marriage both limited and opened up a new world to her, a world in which she would learn to develop human relationships within her own standards. The third concerns the importance she placed on being a mother and the ways that maternity impacted upon her painting. But also important is how her roles as wife, sister, lover and friend also influenced her work. And the final section discusses how she manipulated and depicted domestic space in her art.

Kelly, Jessamy. "The combination of glass and ceramics as a means of artistic expression in studio practice." Thesis, University of Sunderland, 2009. http://sure.sunderland.ac.uk/3656/.

Full text
Abstract:
This practice-led research investigates the feasibility of combining glass and ceramics in a hot state, as a means of artistic expression in studio practice. Glass and ceramics have many related material qualities and are processed in similar ways. Chemically they are alike however structurally they are very different, which creates compatibility problems when they are combined in a hot state. Through controlled processing, material properties can alter when each is partially converted into the other. It is recognised by artists in the field of studio ceramics that porcelain can partially convert into a glassy form when high fired to create a translucent material. Likewise it is recognised in the field of industrial engineering that glass can partially convert into a ceramic form when processed in a controlled way to create a glass-ceramic material; this material is not used by practitioners and would be difficult to develop in a studio environment. A total of 43 contemporary practitioners were found that worked in both glass & ceramics in their work. Of these only 16 practitioners combined glass and ceramics in a hot state, the majority combined them in a cold state to avoid compatibility issues. It became apparent that there is a distinct lack of published material on the combination of glass and ceramics in studio practice. It was the aim of this investigation to address this gap by identifying and testing potential hot state processing routes. This research addresses these issues through a multiple-method approach rooted in creative practice; directed by the following aims: • To develop the practical and creative parameters of the combination of glass and ceramics in a hot state. • To demonstrate and articulate the possible creative and practical benefits of the new processing routes as a model for practitioners in the field. • To articulate the significance of the research methods and results through the mapping of the field. Material testing was focused on artistic practice and experimentation which identified the creative parameters of combining glass and ceramics in a hot state, four potential process routes that combine glass and ceramics in a hot state were identified and tested. This testing was further extended and supported by the application of compatibility studies, which helped to match the expansion rates of glass and ceramics when they are combined. Bone china was identified as the closest fit to glass in terms of expansion rates; quartz was added to further improve the fit of the materials. Case studies of artists that work in glass and ceramics have been used to position the research within the field. New insights have emerged into the combined processing of glass and ceramics in a hot state. This approach offers a series of potential processing routes to be viewed as a model for others in the field. The final submission includes a thesis, a series of materials tests, and a body of related artworks that demonstrate the hot state combination of the materials.

Laffier, Jennifer. "A qualitative evaluation of the role of artistic expression in psychological empowerment of bullying victims." Thesis, Northcentral University, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3723000.

Full text
Abstract:

In order to help child victims of bullying, a greater understanding of the psychological empowerment process was needed, especially what type of activities support the development of empowerment and how empowerment is related to mental health. Artistic expression, an activity described as therapeutic, had received little attention in regards to its role in empowerment. Thus, this exploratory case study explored the role of artistic expression in psychological empowerment with child bullying victims specifically using the Nomological Network of Psychological Empowerment model by Zimmerman (1995). The research questions of this study were: (1) in what ways can individuals experience a sense of psychological empowerment from the artistic process; (2) how can the artistic process relate to the three components of the NNPE model; and (3) how are artistic expression, psychological empowerment, and psychological healing related. The archived data of four children involved in a 14- week art therapy program in 2007 in an elementary school in Ontario, Canada was explored. For this case study various data sources, such as pre and post surveys, were examined to uncover any experiences of psychological empowerment. Qualitative content analysis, with a directed approach revealed that artistic expression in art therapy provided experiences of psychological empowerment in a myriad of ways and psychological empowerment was experienced as a cyclical process for participants. Additionally, artistic expression, psychological empowerment, and psychological healing were experienced as an interactional process. Thus, art therapy should be considered as an intervention method for children experiencing bullying. Additionally, researchers should investigate empowerment as a cyclical process and conduct longitudinal studies to determine the empowerment process over time.

Abstract:
The work Estação da Luz: desenho e realização de um painel para o saguão 2 de acesso às plataformas de trem (Estação da Luz: design and realization of a panel for the Hall 2 accessing to railway platform) shows the trajectory of the Estação da Luz Panel creation by its author. The 120 x 85 x 1 cm panel is composed of 14 modules. It was installed on the walls at the sides of the Hall 2 fixed ladder that connects the Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos (CPTM) and São Paulo Metrô lines integration area and the central platform of Estação da Luz. The panel\'s goal, besides aesthetic, is to engage in an immanent relationship with Estação da Luz, beneath which it is installed. That determined the choice of oxidized iron as its raw material as a reference to the railway station material, cast iron , and of its design. The latter originated mainly from the station representative signs. Besides dialoguing with the railway station, the panel interacts with the architecture onto which it is installed, in terms of adopted proposal, ambience and local conditionings. So, the analysis of that artistic object inserts in the discussion about relationships between Art and Architecture. In the panel\'s realization, aesthetic issues also commanded the study of raw material and technique, and in this sense several essays were made.

Abstract:
Newspapers often report on the violation of learners’ rights. Many of these violations and critical incidents are related to the right to freedom of expression, which is internationally viewed as a core right in a democracy. My inquiry focused on grade 11 learners’ understanding of the right to freedom of expression. It is important to understand learners’ understanding of the right to freedom of expression, as they are the leaders of tomorrow and the right to freedom of expression is central to the survival of democracy. This inquiry was informed by an interpretivist paradigm. Atlas.ti™ was used to systematically analyse the data and categorise it into three hermeneutic units. This computer-aided qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS) tool facilitated the process of analysis and enhanced the validity of the research. During the inductive process of analysis two patterns crystallised, viz. the absolutising of the right to freedom of expression by some learners and the lack of skills to implement the limitation to the right to freedom of expression in schools. The main findings indicated that some learners did not have knowledge regarding the right to freedom of expression, although most learners were aware that they could speak their minds under this right. Furthermore, learners didn’t seem to know how to exercise the right to freedom of expression. One of the factors disrupting the implementation of the right to freedom of expression in schools is the perpetuation of an authoritarian culture in schools. Theoretical and practical recommendations are suggested and avenues for future research are identified.

Abstract:

Through the use of artistic-creative methodology and alchemical hermeneutic exploration, this production thesis examines the creation of images and the process of dialoguing with them as a therapeutic tool, helping to heal and empower female trauma survivors. By acknowledging and interacting with images from the unconscious, one may begin to reintegrate split or dissociated parts of the Self, ultimately leading to the reunification of psyche. Drawing upon the theories of Jung, depth psychology, and expressive arts therapy, the author presents her personal journey toward healing, selfexpression, and empowerment, which involves active imagination and dialogues with created images. The production, two original paintings, illustrates the process of accessing the unconscious through interaction with images as a way of making meaning and healing from trauma, splitting, and dissociation. Using these ideas, mental health clinicians can gain an additional modality for the successful treatment of trauma survivors.

Full text
Abstract:
This project is based on eight weeks of fieldwork at an independent theatre in Beijing in the spring of 2017, based on anthropological and artistic methods. It is an attempt to develop the concept artistic ethnography, and apply it practically. In this, art is seen not mainly as a product or a form of presentation, but as a way of thinking, of relating to the world. The material consists of field notes, video, pictures, movement material, personal stories, the memories of smells, sounds and tastes and of something as vague as atmosphere – the pace of the city, the feeling of a rehearsal situation... How can the stage render a place and its people? Can I bring my experiences to life, making them relevant for anybody else? The practical artistic work with an exposition is an attempt to answer these questions. What images do we have, and what do we see when we mirror each other? What does it mean that our worlds are already intertwined? The mirror as image and play appear both as a theme and a method. Concepts like exoticism, representation and the encounter with the other are discussed, as well as the movement between identification and othering, contributing to understanding. How are people’s lives affected by China’s rapid social changes, balancing between socialism and capitalism? What role do the performing arts have in this? Questions about freedom of expression are discussed, along with the relation between politics and styles of acting, the so called “fake realism”. The research questions are tied together in a discussion of authenticity, to finally return to the personal encounter and a story of seeking contact, of friendship.

Abstract:
This thesis centres its analysis upon the fascination for the collective at the potential cost of a delimitation of individual expression, within the confines of the Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra (MST). From the perspective of an applied anthropology, and to the end of contributing a constructive critique of the MST, the thesis seeks to ascertain how the movement has structured itself through the micro-actions of its membership around the domain of collective tropes of identity and where this complex set of understandings is leading the movement, both in the immediate, and more long-term, futures. To these ends, the principal focus of analysis is how actors within the movement construct and understand experiences of movement logic and emotion, as they perceive it, in and around their ambit. The thesis is thus orientated from an ethnographic perspective; throughout, actors’ accounts and experiences are privileged to attempt to throw light upon the manifold processes that being a member of the MST renders part of daily life. The thesis argues that in this extraordinarily dynamic time in Brazil, with socio-economic conditions so different to when the movement was founded, flexibility is going to be key as to whether the MST can endure, remaining relevant to its members and in a position where it can attempt to address its strategic aims. The thesis suggests that the movement faces a signal dilemma regarding the very device on which it has built its success, the unified collective front into which MST members’ identities can be subsumed. This fascination for the collective and its correlates, a hostile attitude to the media and the polarisation that can separate MST members from wider society, is explored through a series of differing contexts and the thesis closes with conclusions embedded within the framework of an applied anthropology; in pragmatic terms, how can the MST best achieve its stated goals at this historically significant point of its trajectory.

Abstract:
This work has as its main objective to analyze how the multiplicity of spaces that exists in Syria forms regions of artistic expressions different among them. The music and dances of this country have, intrinsic to their scales and gestures, elements coming from the space noticed by the man. In this research, it is emphasized that the space interferes, but do not determines theses choices; other factors considered here also contribute to the artistic elaboration. In this work, the space, constituted by the landscape plus the relations set in it, is not considered neutral. It acts on people as they act on him; man is in continuous - and not always conscientious - connection with his environment attributes. As we analyze here, the special structure, the temperature and the humidity of a region, its sonorous landscape (sounds to which a place is submitted), the daily sounds ahd gestures plus other major structures interfere in the sounds repertoire that is chosen to make music. Furthermore, these elements will impress postural marks and marks of muscular tonus that affect movements used to dance.

Abstract:

This dissertation explores the stories of seven women spiritual-ecofeminist-activist-artists, including myself. It answers the question, What transformative and spiritual connections does one have with her ecofeminist activism and art?

This study connects different ways of knowing from the mind, body, heart and spirit; and it has three significant dimensions. The first dimension—transdisciplinary spiritual feminist inquiry—allows the researcher to interconnect several disciplinary ways of knowing, and it presents feminist ways to inquire about experiences with activism and creative artistic expression. The second dimension—exploration of transformational and spiritual connections—explores how study participants experience spiritual connections within their spiritual-ecofeminist-activist-artwork. The third dimension—inspirational narratives—holds the hope for the reader to connect to these stories, ecofeminist activism, and artwork, and become inspired to become agents of creative social change. After the conclusion of each of the interviews, I created a reflective art-piece, inspired by each artist-activist.

The research methodology combines transdisciplinary inquiry with feminist and women’s spirituality methods. Epistemological approaches are rooted in women’s spirituality and feminism.

The responses of the seven women spiritual-ecofeminist-activist-artists revealed, upon analysis, nine shared themes: Inspiring Others; Finding One's Voice, Connecting to Ancestors, Healing; Honoring/Connecting to Nature, Finding Community, Traveling, Greening Daily Life, and Discovering/Honoring the Goddess. These themes, along with the three main themes—Early Inspiration and Goals, Art and Activism Interconnections, and Spiritual Dimensions—affirm that numerous spiritual and transformative connections exist between their activism and creative artwork, and that these connections are dependent upon the person’s background, history, chosen spiritual-ecofeminist-activist-artwork, and creative media. Their responses indicate that there is a spiritual component to their spiritual-ecofeminist-activist-artwork and that their activism and artwork are interconnected. Their responses show that each of the seven women spiritual-ecofeminist-activist-artists defines ecofeminism in her own unique way, while making connections to nature, women, the sacred feminine or Goddess, and healing. And they utilized art and spiritual sources to heal and regain balance in their lives. The voices in this study, through storytelling, create a space of “multiple consciousness,” where the multi-dimensional voices of the seven women spiritual-ecofeminist-activist-artists are heard and valued.

Root, Pierce Denise Lyn. "Applying the Study of Bel Canto Vocal Technique to Artistic Horn Playing: Perfect Legato, Beautiful Sound, Agility, and Musical Expression." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/272836.

Abstract:
Horn players can improve their abilities to play artistically in a lyrical legato style, with a light mechanism, and employ a beautiful sound throughout the range of the horn through the study of bel canto vocal technique. No better singing model exists for horn players than that of the great bel canto singers of the early nineteenth century who were known for their refined technique, perfect legato, even tone, sparkling agility, and beautiful musical expression. Mastery of the expressive bel canto melodic style is a means for horn players to achieve artistry in performance. Pedagogical principles of nineteenth- and twentieth-century bel canto teachers, vocal exercises related to development of bel canto technique, and recorded performances of singers who have specialized in bel canto repertoire are examined. This study culminates in performer's guides to repertoire chosen from the few existing early nineteenth-century solo horn with piano pieces (by Balfe, Mercadante, and Rossini), with bel canto-informed horn technique explained.

Darbe atlikta teorinė sociokultūrinės meninės raiškos tobulinimo galimybės ugdant būsimus mokytojus analizė. Skatinant moksleivių raišką ir sociokultūrinės raiškos plėtrą, svarbu juos išmokyti kurti supančios aplinkos kultūrą, o ne tik ja remtis, būti jos vartotojais. Tai labai svarbi asmenybės nuostata. To siekiama remiantis moksleivių socialine kultūrine raiška. 2. Tiek apklaustieji studentai, tiek ir meno mokytojai lanko meno kolektyvus, norėdami patenkinti pomėgius, poreikius, o lankyti pasirinktą kolektyvą nusprendžia dažniausiai patys, tai rodo, jog ši meninės saviraiškos rūšis yra labai svarbi ir aktuali asmeniškai. 3... Abstract:
Paauglystėje asmens brandos raida tarytum pagauna pagreitį, pagauna ir ilgam užtvirtina pagrindinius brandos aspektus, kurie savo pastovumo prasme daugeliui žmonių jau lieka nepakitę visą jų tolesnį gyvenimą. Įvairi vizualinė raiška padeda asmeniui mokytis dailės kalbos. Anot J. Kievišo (2007, 6 p.) „veikdamas asmens dvasinių vertybių sistemą, intelektines, emocines, fizines galias menas skatina individualios kultūros bei sociokultūrinės integracijos raidą ir taip įsilieja į bendrą asmenybės brandos procesą.“ Vizualinės raiškos įvairovė – kelias, kuriuo menas pasiekia ugdytinio suvokimą, veikia jį ir ugdo pilnavertę asmenybę. 5–8 klasių mokinių amžiaus tarpsnis ypatingas. Vaikai tampa paaugliais, kinta jų mąstymas, suvokimas, norai, požiūris. Dažnai vaikai praranda motyvaciją mokytis, „nebemoka“ piešti, protestuoja prieš juos supančią aplinką. Šiame amžiaus tarpsnyje pastebimas kūrybiškumo lūžis. Tam, kad ugdytinių kūrybiškumas toliau laipsniškai augtų, jau reikalingi papildomi svertai. Manoma, kad vizualinės raiškos įvairovė gali būti raktas, sprendžiant kūrybiškumo ugdymo problemas. Nagrinėjamas darbo objektas – vizualinės raiškos įvairovės svarba dailės pamokose, jos vaidmuo 5–8 klasių mokinių meniniam ugdymui. Darbo tikslas – atskleisti vizualinės raiškos įvairovės svarbą 5–8 klasių mokinių meniniam ugdymui. In adolescence, the development of personal maturity gains acceleration and consolidates the basic maturity aspects, which in the sense of their stability do not change for many people throughout their lives. Different visual expression helps a person to learn the language of art. According to J. Kievišas (2007, p. 6) “by acting on a person’s system of spiritual values, intellectual, emotional and physical capacities, the art stimulates the development of individual culture and socio-cultural integration and in such way adds to the general personal maturity process.” The variety of visual expression is a way through which the art can reach a person’s perception, act upon it and educate a versatile personality. The age of 5th –8th graders is a very special stage of personal development. Children become adolescents with changes in their thinking, reasoning, wishes and attitudes. Often children lose motivation to learn, “do not know how” to draw, express protest against surrounding environment. This stage of development is a turning point in a person’s creativity. In order to develop children’s further creativity, additional stimuli are necessary. The variety of visual expression is supposed to be a key in solving various creativity education problems. The subject of this work is the importance of the variety of visual expression during art lessons, and the role of such variety for the creative education of 5th –8th graders. Abstract:
This Thesis explores artistic activism or artivism in the context of youth in post- revolution Tunisia. During and after the Arab Uprisings, the MENA region has experienced a tendency, wherein resistance is undertaken by artivists through in situ art interventions, music, and performances that create ‘new cultural spaces’, in which cultural hybridism through the mix of urban youth subculture, communication and traditional culture, creates new contexts of authenticity. It further investigates how art and activism is used in Tunis as a tool to mirror, provoke or communicate messages that directly or indirectly deal with post-revolution themes, and which mechanisms exist in limitations of artistic freedom of expression. It utilizes concepts of cultural resistance through theorists Stephen Duncombe and discusses the concept artivism as a hybrid term, through Aldo Milohnic. It then delineates subculture, authenticity and hybridization through various theorists and examines Artistic Freedom of Expression through the standpoint of international conventions and reports. The Thesis also analyzes artistic activism, commodification and globalization through a re-contextualization of Theodor Adorno and Walter Benjamin.Guiding this analysis are interrelated points of redefining Arab youth subcultures, through interviews conducted with five young Tunisian artists who combine artistic expression with political commentary and activism. I argue that a new dynamic discourse is shaped in the MENA region through the re-mixing of a cultural narrative which becomes re-contextualized locally, and therefore becomes authentic in a ‘glocal’ context. The Thesis offers analytical contribution to the field of cultural production in a Tunisian political context and adds to the research field of artistic activism.

Abstract: Encompassing the ways of artistic practice and theoretical thought, this research intends to investigate the building of the expression knowledge held by dance artists. It briefly evaluates the means of teaching and creating scenic dance, for grasping today's artist needs to become the creator and performer of his expressive language. It highlights the importance, to the worker of the art of movement, to be pliant to one's boundaries, towards a consistent corporeal mastery, able to produce engaged and original responses both to one's creative longings and to new demands of contemporaneity. Through resources provided by the fields of Somatic Education and Movement Analysis, a path is presented that proposes expressive potential enhancement through the perception/action flow - an approach that pursues reaching the very foundations of expressivity. Engaged on conceptually supporting the artist and on a creative bodily experience founded on authenticity, it points to a sensible and dynamic sight of Laban/Bartenieff s system as a tool for a new contextualization of dance teaching and creating processes. The goals of this research are achieved with its practical application to two choreography creation projects that weave the author's poetic drive to the open space which hosts and stirs the performer-creator artist to the quest of his expressive singularity.

Abstract:
The Lebanese political identities have often been linked to the existing religious identities. Lebanon has known in fact a number of civilizations and cultures, and has continuously been a place of political and religious tensions. From a methodological point of view, this thesis is based on readings and analysis of the press and the media, in addition to the literature of different artistic expressions. In the first section, the thesis focuses on the problematic. We present the multiple Lebanese political parties, their ideologies, their relationship with power and their history, especially after the Taef agreement (1989). We also study the political institutions and the political practices in Lebanon, as well as the multiple forms of political engagement. The thesis also tackles the important role of the traditional Lebanese families and the charisma of politicians. In the second section, we study the link between the political identities and the religious identities in the Lebanese public space. It focuses on the different kinds of relations that bound those two identities, in addition to the religious implications of wars. Also, this section analyses the geographical distribution of the political and religious identities in the country. In section number three, the thesis highlights the expressions of the political identities. It suggests an approach to the representation of these political identities in the media, in the fiction (literature, cinema, etc), in the songs and in fine arts. Finally, the last section focuses on the censorship, important concept in Lebanon, in the presence of a number of political and religious powers that influence the process of communication. We will define censorship, and focus on different kinds of censorship (political censorship, religious censorship, invisible censorship). We will also highlight the procedures and laws that lead to censorship, and the different ways followed by journalists and artists to face it

Braun, Sandra. "Arts du Cirque et remaniements psychiques : la piste comme Surmoi d'emprunt, ou le cirque comme pré-texte." Thesis, Sorbonne Paris Cité, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016USPCC190.

Full text
Abstract:
In the fields of artistic mediation, psychoanalysis has very rarely focused on the circus as a therapeutic medium. The hereby approach attempts to articulate this connection. The proposed thesis shows that the practice of circus arts can be a conveyor of psychological reorganizations, within a sensitive transferential framework. From the perspective of the distinctive features of circus arts, I bring forward psychological specificities that play a role in this therapeutic space. The circus appears as a subversive heterotopic space (Foucault), where balances are rendered unstable. This imbalance, which is inherent to circus arts, could also be a concern for psychological authorities. The circus ring could be considered as a borrowed superego. A clement superego, similar to the one described by Freud in Humour (1927), allowing to experience the world as a child's play. A superego that reconciles with the self, allowing movement in the sensory space. Etymologically, the ring is the place of trace, a marked surface, that aliows the notion of footprint, by approaching the sensory dimension as the initial matrix, through the experienced body. Thus, it generates the update of several native echoes that I describe from the perspective of feeling, sight and composure. The circus is also a real space, reanimated by the experience of animal nature. In this respect, it allows a space of silence, necessary to the articulation of language. It is an unavoidable pretext and pre-verb that resonates a somewhat worrying familiarity. The circus ring thus appears, where the unpredictable can emerge, and where an exit from the stasis is possible, so that a subjective dynamism takes shape
