Abstract:
The artide discusses an important beginning of the feminist literary research in Sweden. The seminars started in Uppsala in 1967. The artide analyzes the aims of the sex role seminar and its activities duringthe first year 1967-68. Under personal management of Karin Westman Berg, experts held lectures on women's role in literature and the participants diseminated the new knowledge through artides in newspapers. An anthology, Sexroles in literature from the antiquity to the 1960s, was published the followingyear. The seminar was rnterdisciplinary with both women and men participating. The aim of the sex role seminar was twofold; to emphasize the importance of gender research and to offer a historical perspective on the current sex role debate. The seminar was the startingpoint of organized gender research in Sweden and it continued until 1977.

Abstract:
The argument of this artide is that feminist analysis of the gender of knowledge would profit by using a generational perspective. By making use of Sandra Harding's concepts of structural, symbolic and individual gender, I suggest that it is possible to track down the structural dilemmas and the symbolic climate, specific to any one generation. This is done by positioning them in relation to their subjectivity and the epistemology they embrace. In an effort to illuminate the structural, symbolic and individual gender of four generations of feminists the artide examines four groups in chronological order namely "exceptional women", "pioneers", "the next to equal" and "individualists". The artide concludes by asking whether a radical epistemological critique will emanate from the new generation of women researchers - the generation of the "individualists" - who unlike their predecessors are not positioned as "outsiders within" the academy.

Abstract:
From the expandingfield of popularscience fiction this artide concentrates on three sf-films: Star Tre k: First Contact (1999), Terminator 2: ludgement Day(199i) and Alien Resurrection (1997). In all three films we find different variations on a stereotype representation of femininity. The artide begins with a discussion of populär culture and the images we meet everyday, and stresses the importance of remembering which genre one works with. Three common tropes are analysed: the mother, the monster and the machine. In Star Trek: First Contactwe find the borg-queen; a variation of the evil she-monster disguised as a machine. In Terminator 2 we have a strong heroine who is described in a very ambivalent way. The artide argues that Alien: Resurrection represents a different kind of populär culture. It is an example of a populär film that plays with the genre's rules in an ironic fashion, and in the film we have a different representation of Ripley as both mother and monster that reaches beyond the stereotype.

Abstract:
Since critics first alleged that feminism claimed to speak for all women, feminist researchers have been aware of the limitations of gender as a single analytical category. Leslie McCall argues in this artide for the need to consider the methodological aspects of intersectional analyses. Three approaches to the complexity of intersectionality are identified, anticategorical, intercategorical and intracategorical. McCall argues for the benefits of the intercategorical approach to complexity which does not reject existing and established analytical categories but works to reframe them. Abstract:
The rapid development of science and technology also has an impact on the development of crime, one of which is the crime of defamation. Defamation is a crime that has its own characteristics that cannot be equated with crimes in general, because it is a special crime that needs to be regulated in a legal system. In positive law this act is regulated in Artides 310-321 of the Criminal Code and also Artide 27 paragraph (3) in conjunction with Artide 45 of the ITE Law. Then in Islamic law this act is induded in jarimah hudud. Normative legal research is legal research used in this research, which is prescriptive in nature by using sources of legal materials, booh primary legal materials and secondary legal materials. The approach used is comparative. The results of the study are that both Positive Law and Islamic Law explicitly regulate acts of defamation, these two legal systems have the same characteristics in determining the qualifications of defamation offenses and criminal liability, the only difference relates to the type of punishment given to the two perpetrators of defamation.

Abstract:
In modern society we expect conple relationships to be based on love, preceded by a time of infatnation. This emotion is likely to be percepted as unique, at the same time it is part of our society's idea about love and conple relationship. This artide compares ideas of falling in love with personal experiences of falling in love. What do people mean by "falling in love"? Are there any differences between men and women's ideas of, and experiences from, falling in love? And, in that case, how does that inflnence the constitution of a heterosexnal relation of love? The artide is based on qnalitative interwievs with six women and five men. The analysis of the interwievs shows that the informants share a common ideal abont falling in love, but that their personal experiences are gender-specific. The moment the informants have tried to transform their ideal into everyday-life practice they have failed. The reason for this is that they have tried to transform a gender- neutral ideal in to a gender-divided reality.

In this artide Nina Lykke welcomes the continuation of the debate set off by her article in Kvt 1.03, "Intersectionality: A useful concept in gender research". Lykke argues that we have to remain vigilant to the risk that the concept of intersectionality may lose its ability to capture changing social relations and asymmetries of power if its exad definition or methodology is pinned down. Perhaps intersectionality is best understood as a provocative and oppositional critical figure, rather than a set method or theory, Lykke argues. In this sense the concept of intersectionality can offer a locus of both theoretical debate and transversal politics.

Abstract:
RFSU, Riksförbundet för sexuell upplysning ("The Swedish Association for Sex Education") was founded in 1933 by the journalist and syndicalist Elise Ottesen-Jensen (1886- 1973) and a group of left-wing doctors. Sexual reform was its mission. The organisation wanted information, contraceptives and abortion to be accessible, the introduction of sexual education in schools and a decriminalization of homosexual acts. In this artide, RFSU'S views on sexuality and gender in the 1930's and 1940's, are discussed. I focus on what at the time was seen as major dysfunctions in sexual life, women's frigidity and men's impotence. RFSU was of the opinion that women were oppressed in society, but gave no political explanation to frigidity. Frigidity was seen as a psychological and relational problem, caused by ignorance, sexual inhibitions, fear of unwanted pregnancies or male negligence. The artide also focuses upon the concept of sexuality. Within RFSU, different perspectives on sexuality were put forward - biological, psychological, social - that is, there was not one exclusive concept or definition of sexuality. But some ideas were shared: that sexuality was a distinctive force throughout life, that it was primarily directed towards pleasure and only secondly towards reproduction, that women's sexuality was as powerful as men's (but possibly different), and that heterosexual intercourse was the ideal and normal sexual act even though expressions of sexuality could vary.

Abstract:
The artide discusses how respondents from two professional groups - medical doctors and family law secretaries - "do" gender when they talk about and (re)present themselves in their professional and organisational contexts. The respondents' stories about themselves as professionals and their professional work are analysed as gendered and gendering organisational practices. On the one hand gender is perceived as irrelevant in these professional contexts. On the other hand the respondents simultaneously talk about a mix of genders in positive terms. The paradox mention above is our analytical point of entry and by discussing how "gender neutrality" and "the good mix of genders" are constructed and related to each other we want to contribute to an increased knowledge about tightly interwoven construction processes of gender, organisation and profession. In the artide we show different ways of reading and presenting inter-views, exemplify the variety of processes of gender construction in our empirical material as well as show how the analysis of one "case" of doing gender can be elaborated. A complementary gender dichotomy seems to be a culturally hegemonic frame for doing gender and it seems to be a stable condition for the organisation-, profession- and genderconstructing processes we are discussing here. It is primarily stability that is in focus in the article. However, we also point out examples of how hegemonic constructions of gender are challenged. Through the analysis we demonstrate among other things how closely the processes mentioned above are interwoven with a naturalised heterosexuality. We also show how the paradox - "gender is irrelevant, but gender matters" - is dissolved either through the construction of gender as something else than professionalism, or through the construction of gender differences as contributing to professionalism. Regardless of whether gender is "done" irrelevant or relevant to professionalism, gendered power structures remains a nonissue.

Abstract:
The basictheme of this artide is gender and power in the field of journalism in Sweden. It is not controversial to assert that journalism, historically speaking, evolved as a male-dominated field. Despite the high level of gender quality in Sweden, however, this pattern remains the case. Drawing on Bourdieu's theories on habitus, capital and field and Toril Moi's "appropriation" of Bourdieu, the artide looks at the structure of the field of journalism during three time periods: the party press phase (1900-1950), the professionalization phase (1950-1985), and the commercialization and feminization phase (1985 onwards). The field of journalism is defined at the nexus of three overarching social forces - political, economic, and professional forces and dynamics— and the gender order of the field reflects the relative weight of these forces at any given point in time. The empirical analysis of the field is centered around four main questions: (1) which positions men and women have been given access to during different time periods, (2) what forms of capital men and women have accumulated, (3) how images and perceptions on what constitutes "good" journalism have become gendered over time and which positions, media and genres of journalism have been associated with status/ prestige as well as to what extent this social status branding has become gendered, and (4) to what extent the struggle in the field has been gendered and what strategies and tactics have been employed in that struggle. In closing, the article discusses some tentative conclusions about the logic of the field of journalism. The main finding is that status, prestige and power have been associated with conceptions of masculinity and these conceptions, in turn, have been associated to the beliefs that underpin the field—the image of the journalistic "mission".

Abstract:
The new women's movement of the 1960s and 1970s regarded the flat, non-hierarchical organisational form as an indispensable condition for changing women's consciousness as well as society as a whole. Although it soon became clear for many women that this organisational f o rm had problems of its own (e.g. the informal leaders), the ideal of the non-hierarchical, flat structure still has its appeal, and functions as a source of strength for many groups working in the 1990s. F r om a feminist and cultural theoretical point of view this artide addresses the tensions arising between feminist employees and feminist employers within two organisations within the contemporary Swedish women's movement. The empirical material on which the article is based comes f r om a larger research project that encompassed participant observation of association meetings in the course of a year as well as life-story and group interviews. The investigation shows that one of the main reasons for the tensions between employees and employers is the clash between different interests and types of rationality. These clashes had consequences both for the achievement of the groups' goals and for the internal interaction of the groups. Demands for efficiency within the group and adaptation to institutional demands from financing bodies thus clashed with feminist goals that prescribe non-bureaucratic ways of working as well as equal participation. The actual interaction within the groups was assessed against the ideal of the flat organisation, which often led to disappointment. The artide argues for the need for feminist employees and employers to acknowledge that these two roles encompass specific interests and types of rationality which may sometimes be contradictory. It urges feminists to discuss these issues constructively and to try different and innovative ways of combining different types of rationality without giving up the overarching feminist goal.

Abstract:
The artide examines the subversive and queer potentials of femininity, through the use of feminist theory and queer theory. The point of departure is an article by Ulrika Dahl, which was published in the official magazine of the National Swedish Federation for Lesbian and Gay Rights (RFSL). Dahl's article opens for the possibility to interpret femininity as something other than an unambiguously patriarchal and heterosexual position. Using the theories of Simone de Beauvoir, Judith Butler and others, it is shown how gender can, not only be performed incorrectly, but that it is also possible to perform gender "too much". This exaggerated performance of gender fits well with Beauvoir's analysis of femininity without an illusion of transcendence, which hasn't been explicitly analyzed before. This queer femininity can, along with other subversive positions, be used to challenge patriarchal and heteronormative structures.

Abstract:
This artide problematises, from a poststructuralist and queer perspective, the linking of men and masculinity, which is common in the main part of Men's Studies. The genealogy of the concepts is discussed and also how Connell, Kimmel and Hearn, the Second Wave feminism and poststructuralists have used them. Judith Halberstam's concepts of "female masculinity" and "male femininity" are then suggested as a fruitful way to exceed the sex dichotomy. By focusing on how both femininity and masculinity are materialised and used in identity constructions of both men and women, it is argued that a more complex understanding of gender is possible. Halberstam's concept is also linked to Lisa Adkin's discussion of gender flexibility in the late modern labour märket, and to Adkin's argument that new gender hierarchies are hidden behind what is supposed to be more equal gender relations. In the last part of the artide the author exemplifies from a study of men in female occupations how men working as nurses, hairdressers and pre-school teachers position themselves by using masculinity and femininity concepts. These men both integrate and position themselves in contrast to femininity and masculinity concepts. While feminine characteristics are highly prefered, femininity connected with gay men is by the heterosexual matrix made unthinkable. In conclusion it is argued that in the future gender researchers need to problematise heterosexual gender presumptions and study how both women and men perform femininity and masculinity.

Summary The object of this artide is to explore the construction of identity in the narrative of judge Jephthah, who sacrifices his daughter to honour a vow. My reading includes three texts: The Book of judges (chapters 10-12) and two Nordic plays by Ernst Didring (1912) and Johannes Linnankoski (1919). Rather than stereotypes, the biblical Jephthah and his daughter feature sites of conflict and paradox with regard to gender, ethnicity and social status. The two dramas exhibitvastlydifferenttreatments of the characters. Whereas Didring enhances contradictions and ambiguities, Linnankoski reduces and explains them. This article is motivated by the conviction that analysis is to be preferred to censure with regard to ethically provocative texts. I therefore present a short, but general introduction to feminist biblical studies in general. In conclusion finally, I raise the broader issue of the possibilities and difficulties

Starting with four postulates, this artide (somewhat sweepingly) demonstrates how the paradox of Shakespeare, the discrepancies of his time, become our paradox and our discrepancies. So have for instance the young Elizabethan gallants been replaced by "the middleaged woman". Institutionalized theatre is part of the patriarchal tradition. Creativity and flexibility is mostly found within free theatre groups. Burning issues pertaining to the theatre tend to be the same over the centuries; what was passionately discussed during Elizabethan times is still being discussed, albeit with a different slant. Although the tone superficially can sound different, it is the same conventions and implications, political as well as artistical, that are discussed.

In their recent Pediatrics artide entitled "Universal Screening for Infant Hearing Impairment: Not Simple, Not Risk-Free, Not Necessarily Beneficial, and Not Presently Justified," Bess and Paradise comment on the performance of the auditory brainstem response (ABR) as a screening procedure, and quote an estimate from the 1993 National Institutes of Health Conference Statement on Early Identification of Hearing Impairment that "for every child with significant hearing impairment, more than 100 babies are referred." Bess and Paradise then comment that "the same concerns necessarily apply to a recently devised, automated ABR instrument," and reference my Handbook of Auditory Evoked Responses in support of their contention.

Abstract:
Kristina Fjelkestam's artide is a review of the feminist theoretical discussion in Kvinnovetenskaplig tidskrift (Kvt) during the last twenty-five years. Inspired by English language journals such as Sign sand Feminist Review, Kvt has emphasised a double strategy from the very first issue. On the one hand the editors declare that Kvt is supposed to act as a disseminator of international and national feminist research in Sweden, and, on the other hand, to engage in a dialogue with the women's movement activists. Kristina Fjelkestam identifies the central feminist theme that runs through Kvfs twenty-fiveyear history as being the "whys" and "hows" of the subordination of women. Although the questions remains central to feminist theory, the explanations have varied over time. Two major theoretical shifts are re-read and analysed, namely the early theories of patriarchy and the more comtemporary theories of intersectionality. A reflection on the epistemological and ontological foundations of emancipatory theory concludes the article.

Abstract:
Tliis article takes as its starting poinl Pierre Bourdieu^ field theory. This concept is applied to Hilma Borelius career. She was the first woman to acquire a Ph. D. in literature in Sweden. Borelius graduated in 1909 and although she did brilliantly she was excluded from the academic field for many years. One of Bourdieu's basic assumptions is that the human being is competitive in the field. This article claims that Borelius was not a fighter. When, in 1922, she after twelve years of outsidership, became acting professor for half a year it was requested by others inside the field. She had un til then never applied for a scholarship or any academic post. Nor had she fought for her subjects of research. Her old professors fougth for her. Thus, this artide claims lliat Bourdieu's view of competition is problematic when applied to a single woman. II Hilma Borelius had not succeeded in reentering the field she had probably been regarded as a failure. Would she have been regarded as a success if she had got her own chair?

Abstract:
Work is in this artide seen as a social phenomenon that has been defined in many different ways. However, the definitions have long been gender biased, in that men's traditional activities more often than women's have been defined as "work". Work has been defined as the opposite of leisure, of consumption, of non-production or of rest, hut work has also been defined for the purpose of assessing the level of economic activity in a society, for establishing the level of economic development and for comparing different societies in a number of ways. Many gender researchers have discussed the male bias in definitions of work, and the importance of developing definitions that include women's activities. Margaret Reid, followed by Karin Kock and others, developed the "third party criterion" for defining work. This criterion states that work includes waged work as well as work performed without payment but for which märket substitutes are available and acceptable. In the artide, the definition of Barbara Hilkert Andoisen is used in building a base for the long term purpose of developing an emancipatory work concept. The concept is bold, as such a work concept should include activities that are paid or unpaid, prescribed or voluntary, fulfilling or unpleasant, performed on a märket or within the family, in public services, in voluntary organisations, performed full-time, part-time or without working time being registered, and activities performed by people regardless of age, gender, class or ethnicity. Finally, the example of the Swedish pension reform in the 1990's shows that pressure for changing the present distribution of work is directed towards women, with no incentives for men to change traditional patters. The tacit agenda may be expressed as "do not disturb men" - women are allowed all kinds of work as long as their activities do not require men to change more than marginally.

Abstract:
Washington University in St. Louis. Overthe last several decades, feminist scholars have become increasingly more reflective with regard to the research process. Addressing the issue of what makes a particular piece of research specifically 'feminist,' they find that it includes incorporating gender, privileging subjectivity, avoiding exploitation, and empowering women. From these characteristics, they conclude that there are no feminist research methods, but that there is one feminist methodology. In this artide, Krook argues that this position does not capture the broader contributions of feminist research, which indicate that there are not only feminist methods, but also multiple feminist methodologies. She outlines these methods and methodologies and then calls on future research to expand these approaches in order to produce.

Abstract:
This artide addresses some of the problems arising at the intersection of feminism and ethnicity, i.e. when Swedish, white feminists work together within women's movements with women belonging to cultural/ethnic minorities. The power relations connected with ethnicity pervading the interaction between Swedish and minority women are seldom discussed within women's associations, either because these relations are not "seen" or because talk about them is experienced as a threat to solidarity and sisterhood. The author sees an increased (individual and collective) reflexivity on the forms practical everyday feminist work takes, and the acknowledgement and active interrogation of power relations within movements as the only means of making feminist and ethnic identities interplay with each other in a productive way.

Abstract:
Conceptualizing gender: The Eurocentric foundations of feminist concepts and the challange of African epistemologies, by Oyeronke Oyewumi, PhD, Associate professor in sociology at Stony Brook University, USA. In her artide Oyewumi argues that the universal use of feminist concepts, developed primarily in North America and Europé, limits our understanding of the gender relations in non-western cultures. Western feminism has its foundations in the idea of a nuclear heterosexual family, which is limiting because of its understanding of gender and feminist sisterhood. In the nuclear family, consisting of a male breadwinner, a female housewife and their children, there is no space for thinking relationshipsoutsidethe male/female dichotomy. This founding idea in Western feminism is insufficient in describing and analysing African constructions of family where blood-relations and seniority determine ones position, rather than gender.

Abstract:
Many different influences operate on fertility råtes and therefore we need an approach that places different variables within a general framework of family decisions on fertility. The advantage of bringing gender equality and women's empowerment to the center of the stage is that they provide a broad perspective which can accommodate many of the major influences on fertility decisions. This includes acknowledging the role of educational development (including the schooling of girls), economic arrangements (including female job opportunities), social concerns (including the status of women), cultural factors (including the value of equity in family decisions), as well as the more traditional variables that can assistant family planning. The artide shows that factors that increase the voice and power of young women in family decisions tend to have the effect of decreasing fertility råtes.

This artide deals witli the basic differences that may exist today and will continue to do so in the nearest future between the goals that women strive for in Eastern and Western Europé with regard to their future rights to equal opportunities with men. The women's liberation movement in Eastern Europé and the Soviet Union was embryonic during the Communist era, but it does not seem likely that it will make much progress during the present post- Communist period. Rather than gender, it is still elementary needs and poverty that dominate the everyday life of women in post-Communist Eastern Europé. The case of Yugoslavia illustrates how much the situation of women has deteriorated and how the emancipation of women has been thwarted in the East European countries.

He alone bas the power to govem not only the life and death o f all humani ty, but also His own. It is accomplished through the Resurrection. The finał aspect of our reflection is the delegation of Jesus' authority over life and death to his discip l es, w ho are sent by Him to continue His mission. Abstract:
Feminist theory has achieved a prominent position in gender studies. But questions about aims and domains for utilization of the theories that would be necessary to assess their strength and relevance are often lacking. In this artide, I discuss feminist theory from my own position as a feminist researcher in family medicine. I explore some epistemological foundations of medical theory and practice, focusing the conceptual understanding of facts, objective findings, and knowledge. Drawing on the theorists Donna Haraway and Lorraine Code, I demonstrate how feminists can challenge significant medical questions where gender is on the agenda. I provide some examples of how feminist theory can offer sharper perspectives enabling a new and relevant understanding of hitherto medically unexplained disorders. Finallly, I raise some questions about the relationship between academic rhetoric and political action in gender research at present.

Abstract:
This artide treats education and the authorship of women in the United Arab Emirates. Women have only since the early 1970s been offered schooling and education on a basis equal to that of the men. Nevertheless, today the first generation of educated women are active in the field of literature. They are writing and publishing modern fiction, mostly in the form of short stories, on a considerable scale in comparison with most Arab countries. The early works by woman writers in the Emirates, stemming from the 1970s and early 1980s, often reflect a tendency of social criticism, sometimes despair. Lately, though, a surrealistic and unconventional form has appeared in for example Salmä Matar Sayfs short stories. While a few novel writers are found among the body of male writers, female novel writers in the United Arab Emirates have vet to appear.

Abstract:
This artide contains an analysis of the performance Salome, the poet Ann Jäderlund's first play from 1995. A psychoanalytical approach inspired mainly hy Lacan and Reeder as well as the discussion of how gender is construed, socially as well as culturally, is nsed to illustrate how this text treats the concept of femininity, which inside the phallocentric order means a position as other. Salome is seen as a woman searching for a way to articulate a female subject without having to position herself as the other, the object. Her struggle to be accepted as an equal subject is envisaged in her encounter with three men, as well in the description of her relationship with her mother and Herode. When this is denied her and they instead project their own narcicistic desires onto her and then reject her, she kills them.

Abstract:
This artide discusses constructions and reproductions of social groups by using examples from two areas of research - bisexuality and biraciality. If bi-positions are ignored in the study of sexual categories, the dominant positions of hetero- and homosexual tend to be represented as stable opposites. The author therefore finds it important to include the function of bi-positions to problematize this polarity. A deeper analysis of bi-positions, the "abjected börder terrorists", is likely to destabilize both poles. The author also questions the naive idea of bisexuals as independent in relation to the dominant sexual discourse, making them free agents. On the contrary, whether we understand bisexuals as either marginalized or in between hetero and homo, they are nevertheless part of the sexual discourse. Bi-positions, such as bisexuals, biracials and other kinds of social in-betweens are analyzed in terms of "both/and", "either/or" and "neither/nor".

Abstract:
In this artide Birgitta Ney uses the news coverage of two feminist manifestations in 1906 as a starting point in order to understand one part of the public sphere and the women who worked there as reporters. One story called "a doctors' scandal" caused a group of women to arrange a meeting in Stockholm. At the meeting a number of them were appointed to conduct an investigation into the matter. The other story covered a nationwide campaign to collect signatures for women's right to vote. Both manifestations were covered by the press and Ney uses one woman reporter and her artides as an example of how the these early female journalists could turn an obligatory coverage of women's activities into a veritable feminist space on the pages of the daily newspapers. When trying to find coverage of feminist actions in the daily press at the beginning of the last century it is best to turn our attention to columns with vignettes such as "For our Ladies", or the sections called the women's page - sections of the papers which have not attracted much interest when political change in our society has been studied. Women reporters, together with the women of the feminist movement, could use these pages, it seems, as an almost under-cover space of their own only a couple of pages away from the artides traditionally labelled political in the press.

Abstract:
The traditional image of the woman who loves is the woman who waits. Lord Byron's famous words about love as a woman's whole existence, still today works as a curse for all women who writes about love in different genres. How are you going to write about wliat you yourself are? In this artide the relation between gender, love and authorship is discussed from several perspectives. The male 19th century writer Stendhal illustrates an illusory "objective" approach on the subject of love, which is still Iteld as an ideal. A revisory female approach is here represented by the modernist novels House of Incest (1936) by Anais Nin and Blodförmörkelse (1951) by Rut Hillarp. In these novels, which both can be labelled female novels of passion, love and women's love-waiting is explored in a radical new mode. Waiting becomes an aesthetics, an art of survival in life as well as in literature.
