Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the article system in Michif. Articles are particularly problematic for the French DP/Plains Cree VP split posited for Michif (Bakker 1997). Despite being French-derived, the Michif articles do not behave like their French counterparts. Michif definite articles occupy a lower position within the DP than French definite articles do, and Michif lacks definiteness, despite having borrowed both the definite and indefinite articles. Even more problematically, the singular definite articles are used to Algonquianize non-Algonquian vocabulary—both within the DP and the VP. Thus, a piece of French morphosyntax has been appropriated to create structures that can be interpreted within Algonquian syntax, providing more evidence that ultimately the Michif DP is Algonquian, rather than French.

Abstract:
This chapter comments on Article 128 of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. Article 128 declares that the original of this Statute, of which the Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish texts are equally authentic, shall be deposited with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, who shall send certified copies thereof to all States. The six versions of the authentic text of the Statute correspond to the six official languages of the United Nations. It is normal practice to specify that all versions are equally authentic. Because of the complexities of the Statute and the haste with which the Conference operated, there were inevitably some errors in the versions that were actually voted upon on July 17, 1998. Subsequently, corrections were circulated to the participants for their concurrence, and the official text is now slightly different from the one adopted at the Conference.

This chapter discusses articles in the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU) that provide for actions that are brought directly before the Court. Under Articles 258 and 259 TFEU (ex Articles 226 and 227 EC), respectively, the European Commission and Member States may bring enforcement proceedings against a Member State in breach of Treaty obligations. Article 260 TFEU (ex Article 228 EC) requires compliance with the Court’s judgment. Article 263 TFEU (ex Article 230 EC) concerns judicial review of EU acts. The outcome of a successful action is annulment. Article 265 TFEU (ex Article 232 EC) provides for actions against the EU institutions for failure to act.

Abstract:
The focus of this chapter is on reporting the qualitative research in peer-reviewed journal articles. Researchers may publish the qualitative data in a standalone journal article, or combine quantitative and qualitative process evaluation data in the same article, or combine the qualitative and RCT research in the same article. Writing these articles can be challenging, even when focusing solely on the qualitative research. Researchers need to consider the number of articles to be published from the whole study, the focus of each article, selecting a journal, and communicating implications for the RCT. Guidance is offered on the key issues to report in journal articles that focus solely on the qualitative research undertaken with an RCT.

McHugh, Anna. The Aberdeen Articles. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198787525.003.0007.

Full text
Abstract:
The Aberdeen Articles are the demands of the rebels who eventually killed James III at Sauchieburn in 1488. The document forms the core of the ensuing parliament’s statement about the cause of the king’s death and how his son came to the throne. This essay examines the nine articles in their original context of July 1488 and how linguistic and structural choices reflect the rebels’ understanding of Scottish kingship and their criticism of James III’s failures. The essay also considers the document’s secondary context, embedded in the parliamentary record as part of a communal narrative and pacification exercise. A study of how parliament recontextualizes the document reflects the institution’s power to make a once-resistant text work for the new hegemony. This sheds light on the role of texts in Crown–parliament relations, particularly in the much-debated area of resistance.

Abstract:
Effective written communication requires the author to consider the intended message and audience and use a form appropriate to both. Medical journal articles usually fit into one of the following 7 main types. Published reports of original research are the backbone of medical and scientific communications. Critical evaluation and replication of the findings of such reports are key aspects of quality control and progress in science and medicine; the clinical applications of original research are a major source of benefits for patients. Journals often categorize reports of original data as Original Articles, Original Communications, or Original Reports, section headings that emphasize the new findings such articles intend to communicate. Short articles reporting original data may be called Brief Reports. Studies that address basic issues of physiology or pathology may be called Research Reports or Clinical Investigations. In JAMA, articles that report preliminary findings are called Preliminary Communications...

Abstract:
This chapter comments on Article 31 of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. Article 31 describes what is known in most criminal justice systems by the terms ‘defences’, ‘excuses’, and ‘justifications’ for excluding criminal responsibility. It addresses several defences: insanity, intoxication, self-defence, duress, and necessity. It is followed by two other provisions, articles 32 and 33, defining specific defences. It is not apparent why articles 32 and 33 were not consolidated into the general provision, article 31. To the extent that they refute a charge, age (article 26), immunity (article 27), statutory limitation (article 29), and lack of mens rea (article 30) also operate as defences.

Abstract:
In late June 1919, as preparations were underway for the signing ceremony of the Treaty of Versailles, rumours reached Paris that the German Crown Prince, who had also found asylum in the Netherlands, was returning home, where he would lead a monarchist revival. The Council of Four sent a message to the Dutch warning them of their concerns and insisting that the Kaiser be safely interned. The Allies were embarrassed when the rumour proved to be false. At the same time, the Council of Four received a strange letter from the former German Chancellor, Theobald van Bethmann-Hollweg, offering to stand in for the Kaiser and take the blame for acts attributed to him. The Council of Four also drafted a letter addressed to the Dutch demanding the Kaiser’s surrender, but agreed to wait before sending it until the Treaty of Versailles entered into force.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter considers three of HKIAC’s mechanisms for dealing with complex arbitrations: the joinder of additional parties, the consolidation of two or more arbitrations, and the commencement of a single arbitration under multiple contracts. It emphasizes the need for institutional rules to include mechanisms for administering multi-party and multi-contract cases. Indeed, the desire to streamline procedure in multi-party/multi-contract situations was recognized as a priority during the revisions to the 2008 HKIAC Rules. HKIAC was keen to ensure that it had appropriate powers to supervise and progress such proceedings and to reduce the scope for parties to use these—now common—complexities to delay or obstruct the arbitral process. The resulting provisions are key features of the HKIAC Rules and a principal reason for parties to select the HKIAC Rules in their agreements.
