Abstract:
At the state fair, everything comes in candy colors, everything is bright, shining, blinking, glowing, popping, chirping, everyone wins! Even the carnies, dried and brown and tired, push shy teenagers towards each other like smoke-stained Cupids. Why don't you win that pretty girl a rose? How can you help but smile? Laugh? Spin and shriek on the rides, get your hands and face sticky with funnel cake and giant hot dogs and win your girl a prize? The fair is its own world, designed and built to please. But what happens when it isn't being enjoyed? When all its color and flash fail?

Paget, Rhiannon Claire. "State of the Art and Art of the State: Komuro Suiun (1874–1945) and Nanga in Imperial Japan." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/14125.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the painting, writing and activism of Komuro Suiun (1874–1945), one of the primary actors in the revival of nanga (“Southern-style painting”), a mode of Japanese painting derived from Chinese literati painting among other sources that unfolded between the late Meiji (1868–1912) and Taishō (1912–1926) periods, and continued to develop into wartime Japan. Chapters Two and Three discuss how the ideals of literati painting were constructed and reinterpreted by successive generations of artists and theorists in China and Japan before Suiun and his peers began re-evaluating them within the context of the developing art world and Japan’s emerging role as a modern state and empire. The following two chapters examine Suiun’s efforts to reinvent nanga as a form of national painting as an individual artist at the centre of the government salon as well as through his leadership of the Nihon Nangain (Japan Nanga Institute), which he led from 1922 to 1936. As Japan’s imperial and military aggrandisement escalated, nanga lent itself to the task of affirming national policy. Chapter Six explores Nanga Kanshōkai (Nanga Appreciation Society), founded by Suiun in 1932 and active until 1944. Established primarily as a correspondence painting course for amateurs in Japan and its colonies, this organisation was premised on Suiun’s belief in the value of nanga as an edifying accomplishment for all people. As with Suiun’s painting practice, the tone and content of Nanga Kanshōkai were augmented by Japan’s progressive militarisation at home and abroad. From the mid-1930s the journal increasingly became a mediator of ultranationalism, pan-Asianist discourse, and propaganda supporting the war.

Labiausse, Pierre. "A state of the art media box." Thesis, KTH, Kommunikationssystem, CoS, 2013. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-119159.

Abstract:
Today media centers are often cluttered with multiple devices each controlled by their own remote control. It is often hard and/or painful to manage and utilize these devices, especially for inexperienced users. Simstream wants to build an innovative smart-TV that as much as possible centralizes functions and controls.  Operating the system should be intuitive and simple, yet experienced users should have access to more advanced operations. This requires acquiring several inputs as well as integrating the communication devices that are necessary to control the attached external devices. Whenever possible, we want to efficiently process every input while minimizing latencies.  As a result, we want all the frequent operation to be as quick and lightweight as possible in order to provide a high quality user experience even under high system loads. This project takes advantage of the widespread availability of touchscreen mobile devices in order to provide an innovative means of control over the television, with remote control mobile applications running on an user’s familiar device. A remote controller will also be sold together with the television, and this remote controller will also have a touchscreen, and will propose the same capabilities as the remote control mobile applications. Finally, this platform will be open to third-party applications, and as a result this thesis project developed a software development kit which is designed to be easy and familiar enough for developers to adopt it and create applications with it. Applications will be developed together with an interface displayed on the remote controllers, in order to tailor the remote control interface to what is currently displayed on the television screen

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to study different types of jitter measurement methods and to make comparison between them. With this purpose, a literature study was performed by searching in different databases. The explored databases include: a) Recent research articles in jitter measurements appearing in IEEE xplorer with published date posterior to 1998, b) Application notes and white papers from leading companies as Agilent and Anritsu.  In this study it is shown that the research method presented in [20] has more accuracy compared to ITU standard method due to that an specific signal from PDH is measured directly while no specification to test equipment is need it. In case of the measurement of aperture uncertainty on ADC it is shown that the research method in [21] has more accuracy compare to IEEE standard methods because it removes quantization error and amplitude noise from measurement while does not need any frequency information

Abstract:
Cartograms combine statistical and geographical information in thematic maps, where areas of geographical regions (e.g., countries, states) are scaled in proportion to some statistic (e.g., population, income). Cartograms make it possible to gain insight into patterns and trends in the World around us and have been very popular visualizations for geo-referenced data for over a century. This Work surveys cartogram research in visualization, cartography and geometry, covering a broad spectrum of different cartogram types: from the traditional rectangular and table cartograms, to Dorling and diffusion cartograms. A particular focus is the study of the major cartogram dimensions: statistical accuracy, geographical accuracy, and topological accuracy. We review the history of cartograms, describe the algorithms for generating them, and consider task taxonomies. We also review quantitative and qualitative evaluations, and we use these to arrive at design guidelines and research challenges.

Dutta, Suchitra. "Political assassinations : the state of the art." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/14337.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis sets out to research the phenomenon of political assassinations. Political assassinations are not random acts of folly which defy analysis but are well planned and discriminate acts of violence which, like terrorism, need to be further researched. The central argument of the thesis is that political assassination cannot be justified and the following research questions will be addressed: o Can the assassinations analysed in the thesis be categorised as political assassinations? o Can the justifications that are analysed within the thesis offer justifications for these political assassinations? o Are political assassinations only successful as existential acts? The thesis will begin by trying to clearly state what constitutes a political assassination and how it is different from terrorism. It will then analyse the various justifications that can be used to justify political assassinations. The thesis will illustrate three theoretical approaches that can be used. These are the instrumental justification, the non - utilitarian justification and terroristic justification. It will then examine the three cases of political assassinations which include that of Anwar Sadat of Egypt, Yitzhak Rabin of Israel and Rajiv Gandhi of India. Each case study will analyse the questions stated above and attempt to find the answers. The thesis will then explore the political assassination regime by assessing the advantages and disadvantages of prohibition and will also raise some interesting questions about potential legal framework for the phenomenon. The thesis will then conclude my examining similarities and differences between the cases by focusing on three main factors. These are target, ideology and motives and finally aims.

Bogner, Andreas, Johanna Kirchberg, Jürgen Weitz, and Johannes Fritzmann. "State of the Art – Rectal Cancer Surgery." Karger, 2019. https://tud.qucosa.de/id/qucosa%3A71683.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: In an aging society, the incidence and relevance of rectal cancer as one of the most frequent gastrointestinal cancers gains in importance. Excellent surgery and up-to-date multimodal treatments are essential for adequate oncological results and good quality of life. Summary: In this review, we describe modern developments in rectal cancer surgery and its embedment in modern multimodal therapy concepts. Key Message: Distinguished interdisciplinary cooperation combined with an outstanding surgical expertise is the basic requirement for an optimal treatment of rectal cancer. Thus, high standards of oncological outcome and patient’s quality of life can be achieved. Due to its localization within the rectum, rectal cancers are divided into tumors of the lower (0–6 cm), middle (6–12 cm), and upper (12–16 cm) third, assessed by rigid rectoscopy measured from the anal verge to the lower tumor margin. This classification is essential for the surgical strategy [2].

Abstract:

Interviews and observations conducted with four Directors and four Teaching Artists at different nonprofit art organizations in a West Coast city within one of the largest urban areas in the country. Questions were given to further understand how these areas impact one another and why it is important to provide quality art education to the public. The study shows how despite the difference in size of each organization in the study, they all rely on the same things from their funders, and all believe their art programs provide an impact on their community. Research was done to see how Teaching Artists focus on the art education they are providing, whether they are required to perform other tasks, and how this impacts the education programs. The Directors of each organization were asked what more they would like to see from their funders. They all stated that it would benefit their program if the funders understood more about the role of their art programs. This research may benefit funders, other nonprofit art organizations, and Teaching Artists employed by nonprofit art organizations.

Solheim, Sindre Arnfeldt. "Probabilistic Reliability : A State of the Art Study." Thesis, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Department of Electrical Power Engineering, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:no:ntnu:diva-9813.

Full text
Abstract:

Power system simulations, power market analysis as well as power system security and reliability analysis now serves as fundamental analysis tasks in power system planning and operation. Thus, it is very useful to discuss techniques, data needs and methodologies related power system reliability. Work is very important both in terms of operational and economical aspects of a modern power system. The task of determining the reliability of a given power system can be a complex and difficult process. Several methodologies exist and the terminology describing these calculations may differ from case to case. The work performed in this thesis demonstrates a known reliability methodology related to a real-life power system. In the latter, PSS®SINCAL and its reliability module ZUBER has been emphasized. The development of a working test model has been an important part of this thesis. In the latter, statistical information describing the power system has been the main challenge, both in terms of availability and quality. The various reliability data have been calculated from annual failure statistics collected by Statnett and experience data from Siemens. The scope of the reliability analysis was to determine the affect of future load expansions. It is a known fact that load development can affect the reliability of the power system and potentially increase the frequency of supply interruptions causing higher CENS costs. However, this was not the case as the changes in frequency of supply interruptions were insignificant. The results showed a suspected CENS cost increase of 1.6 NOK. Thus, it is evident that this is due to the fact that the uninterrupted power is now substantially larger. The reliability analysis show that the given power system will sustain its high level of reliability even with the planned load expansion. A comparative analysis of the ongoing development of a methodology (SAMREL) incorporating power market analysis via power flow and contingency analysis and PSS®SINCAL have also been presented. Comparing tools describing probabilistic reliability are important and can act as an incentive for future development of reliability tools. The major strength of PSS®SINCAL compared to SAMREL is simply the fact that PSS®SINCAL is a developed and commercialized tool. Unfortunately it was not possible conduct a reliability analysis using SAMREL, which was a major draw-back as a comparative analysis of both the tools relates to the same test model would have been very beneficial. SAMREL is comprised of several existing tools and therefore rely on the interaction between these tools, which after my opinion further complicate both the user friendliness and process of commercialization. From an educational point-of-view, the work related to SAMREL has several benefits contributing to increased general knowledge about power system reliability. It is evident that the accuracy of any reliability analysis depends on the quality of the statistical data. The studies show that local statistical data e.g. data based on local knowledge or local statistics often pose as a better solution. However, such data are unfortunately often very difficult to obtain, leaving no alternative as to use the available more general data. However, it is evident that some uncertainties always will exist but need to be taken into consideration when conducting such analysis. However, close cooperation with the utilities in combination with the utilization of high quality reliability data will after my opinion have a positive affect on the accuracy of the reliability analysis. Another important subject related to reliability is the process of identifying the critical system components. As shown, the main tool presented in this thesis is the consequence matrix, which categories the results obtained from the reliability analysis. The categories indicate both the consequence and the corresponding probability. Such matrixes need to be the result of a joint effort from both the customer and the professionals performing the criticality analysis, including all relevant information needed to classify criticality. The strength of this method lies in the fact that the defined probabilities can be used to identify large elements, such as substations and then be further utilized on a component level for the critical substation. The methodologies describing power system reliability have been emphasized throughout this thesis. The given test system and the performed reliability calculation demonstrates PSS®SINCAL as a tool for determining the reliability of a power system. The methodology utilized in this report is from the author’s point of view a good representation of a state of the art reliability analysis.

Carneiro, Carla Margarida da Silva. "Voluntary electronic patient record state of the art." Master's thesis, Universidade da Beira Interior, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.6/1191.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction: With an ongoing economic crisis, Portugal and many other countries are looking into ways to increase efficiencies in all sectors. With almost 10% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) spent in Healthcare, there is a need to improve the use of resources. A Voluntary Electronic Patient Record (VEPR) is an online record of health and healthcare related data provided by the patient himself, available to him, and his authorized health care providers and relatives, in a ubiquitous way anywhere/everywhere. According to some authors through VEPRs, every health institution could have an easier access to a summary of the patient’s most important health data if needed and authorized. Just like Portugal, Australia, for example, is currently preparing a health care reform and the implementation of a Personally Controlled Electronic Health Record (PCEHR) system is also being studied. Surveys to general practitioners and consumers of eHealth are being conducted in order to evaluate the quality and sustainability of Australia’s health care and to develop change and adoption strategies for the PCEHR system. VEPRs can be provided by private companies, hospitals and health organizations or health departments of governments themselves. In Portugal there is at least one VEPR free of charge provided by a private company. This has raised issues of security of data and risks, and has not been approved by the data protection agency, possibly due to considerations on its massive use as well as the ethical issues of linking it to national health data from the NHS. In addition to this private VEPR, Portugal also provides some health online services: eAgenda and eRNU (“Registo Nacional de Utentes”) since 2009. Currently, eAgenda allows patients to schedule for doctor´s appointments and to ask for prescriptions renewal. The online health service, eRNU, allows users to check their general practitioner, the health institution in which they are registered, the health services it provides and its opening schedule. VEPR can be efficient, allowing better sharing of information between health care providers through the online availability of health information. It can be convenient; provide easy access to timely and accurate information no matter where the patient is or when he needs it. It is empowering as it enables the patient to be more active and involved with his own health care. To ensure the privacy of the patient’s health information, a security program is required to allow only the appropriately authorized individuals to access the VEPR and to save the record’s data in case of a technical breakdown occurs. On the other hand, although everyone can have a VEPR, this is normally restricted to younger, more info-included citizens as access to the internet is not universal and there is a natural difficulty in older generations to use IT and Internet. This, however, can be mitigated and will only have a tendency to dissipate in future. Aims: 1. To assess the state of the art about VEPR; 2. To assess the state of the art about VEPR in Portugal; 3. To assess users expectancies towards VEPR in Portugal; 4. To help developing and set in motion a VEPR adjusted to Portuguese population’s health challenges. Methodology: This is a transversal study with a qualitative and quantitative approach. To elaborate this paper, a literature review was made in order to identify sources of information about VEPR and current state of the art on this field. It was established a cooperation with the Portuguese Ministry of Health as it was the only way to indirect and directly collect data about the portuguese VEPR, eAgenda and eRNU. A questionnaire composed of 14 questions, made anonymous, was created using Lime SurveyTM, named “Inquérito para utilizadores dos serviços eAgenda e eRNU”, permission obtained and it was then sent to eAgenda and eRNU users through their e-mail addresses. Data was processed using Microsoft Office Excel 97-2003 and statistically analyzed resorting to Epi Info 7. Because the last question was an open question, the related data was processed manually. Results: Currently, eAgenda and eRNU serve about 4% of the portuguese population. The typical user is female, married, completed high school, has children and age median 38, 5 years old. Own and household appointments scheduling were the more frequently selected as the most useful functionalities as well as those that most contributed to improvement on health care delivery. Waiting time reduction was the most frequent selected advantage of eAgenda and eRNU. Conclusions: It is to be concluded that eAgenda and eRNU are well suited for the portuguese population as only 3,28% of the inquired users pointed eAgenda and eRNU services has not having any advantage. More studies are still required to understand the patterns of use and to promote the online services so that more people, not only 4% of the overall portuguese population, may take advantage of their benefits.

Abstract:
Software has never been as important as today – and its impact on life, work and society is growing at an impressive rate. We are in the flow of a software-induced transformation of nearly all aspects of our way of life and work. The dependence on software has become almost total. Malfunctions and unavailability may threaten vital areas of our society, life and work at any time. The two massive challenges of software are one hand the complexity of the software and on the other hand the disruptive environment. Complexity of the software is a result of the size, the continuously growing functionality, the more complicated technology and the growing networking. The unfortunate consequence is that complexity leads to many problems in design, development, evolution and operation of software-systems, especially of large software-systems. All software-systems live in an environment. Many of today’s environments can be disruptive and cause severe problems for the systems and their users. Examples of disruptions are attacks, failures of partner systems or networks, faults in communications or malicious activities. Traditionally, both growing complexity and disruptions from the environment have been tackled by better and better software engineering. The development and operating processes are constantly being improved and more powerful engineering tools are introduced. For defending against disruptions, predictive methods – such as risk analysis or fault trees – are used. All this techniques are based on the ingenuity, experience and skills of the engineers! However, the growing complexity and the increasing intensity of possible disruptions from the environment make it more and more questionable, if people are really able to successfully cope with this raising challenge in the future. Already, serious research suggests that this is not the case anymore and that we need assistance from the software-systems themselves! Here enters “autonomic computing” – A promising branch of software science which enables software-systems with self-configuring, self-healing, self-optimization and self-protection capabilities. Autonomic computing systems are able to re-organize, optimize, defend and adapt themselves with no real-time human intervention. Autonomic computing relies on many branches of science – especially computer science, artificial intelligence, control theory, machine learning, multi-agent systems and more. Autonomic computing is an active research field which currently transfers many of its results into software engineering and many applications. This Hauptseminar offered the opportunity to learn about the fascinating technology “autonomic computing” and to do some personal research guided by a professor and assisted by the seminar peers.:Introduction 5 1 What Knowledge Does a Taxi Need? – Overview of Rule Based, Model Based and Reinforcement Learning Systems for Autonomic Computing (Anja Reusch) 11 2 Chancen und Risiken von Virtual Assistent Systemen (Felix Hanspach) 23 3 Evolution einer Microservice Architektur zu Autonomic Computing (Ilja Bauer) 37 4 Mögliche Einflüsse von autonomen Informationsdiensten auf ihre Nutzer (Jan Engelmohr) 49 5 The Benefits of Resolving the Trust Issues between Autonomic Computing Systems and their Users (Marc Kandler) 61

In public opinion, protection against asteroids impact has always been on the agenda of space engineering. Actually it started from 1994 when Shoemaker Levy stroke Jupiter. This protection works in two steps: detection of threat and deflection. Some space agencies and foundations monitor the sky and set up scenario. Although the sky is nowadays well monitored and mapped, there is no global plan nowadays against this threat. This paper focuses on the deflection step, and aims at forecasting which variables are involved and their consequences on the deflection mission. In fact the result depends on several factors, like the time before hazardous moment, the accuracy of detection tools, the choice of deflection method, but the most unpredictable are human factors. This study shows a strategy and so tries to give some new response parts to the global deflection problem.

Telemetry Tracking is a method of obtaining trajectory information regarding any flying body such as an aircraft, missile, satellite, balloon or a deep space probe which signals or "marks" its flight position by an electromagnetic radiating source. In a trade-off of costs it is an attractive way to combine Telemetry, Tracking and Command (TTC) facilities into one integrated system on board a spacecraft and with the ground receiving and tracking facilities. The present state of the art of Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) and Angle Measuring Equipment (AME) integrated with telemetry systems is reviewed. The further development will be mainly stimulated by the technology evolution of frequency and time reference sources, microwave components and information processing systems. An attempt is made to analyse which way the growth of technology will influence various system parameters.

Abstract:
With ubiquitous computing, autonomous cars, and cyber-physical systems (CPS), adaptive software becomes more and more important as computing is increasingly context-dependent. Role-based programming has been proposed to enable adaptive software design without the problem of scattering the context-dependent code. Adaptation is achieved by having objects play roles during runtime. With every role, the object's behavior is modified to adapt to the given context. In recent years, many role-based programming languages have been developed. While they greatly differ in the set of supported features, they all incur in large runtime overheads, resulting in inferior performance. The increased variability and expressiveness of the programming languages have a direct impact on the run-time and memory consumption. In this paper we provide a detailed analysis of state-of-the-art role-based programming languages, with emphasis on performance bottlenecks. We also provide insight on how to overcome these problems.

Abstract:
Spectral imaging is an emerging area of X-ray imaging that includes all the techniques which exploit the energy-dependent absorption properties of the matter to either provide quantitative information about the scanned object or to discriminate different materials. Though the potentials of spectral imaging are well known for over many years, the interest on spectral techniques is rapidly increasing only in recent years due to the development and widespread of dedicated acquisition systems able to acquire simultaneous (or nearly simultaneous) X-ray images at different energies. In this context, the development of energy resolving X-ray photon counting detectors (XPCDs) and the increasing availability of synchrotron radiation can provide interesting solutions for spectral imaging applications such as e.g. the K-edge technique. This thesis presents the implementation and the optimization of two state-of-the art acquisition systems suitable for spectral imaging applications with particular interest on the K-edge technique. The first system is an acquisition setup for spectral Computed Tomography (CT) made by coupling a polychromatic source with an energy resolving XPCD implementing two energy thresholds. The work carried out with this setup concerned the thorough characterization of an innovative XPCD featuring a sharp energy resolution, the design of a dedicated image processing procedure to achieve high quality CT images and the development of an automated procedure to produce accurate 3D maps of a K-edge element within a sample. Moreover, to allow further optimization studies, a simulator able to reproduce X-ray images with energy resolving XPCDs has been modeled, developed and validated. The last part of this thesis presents the development and the implementation of an acquisition setup for spectral imaging at synchrotron sources based on bent-Laue crystal optics. The results achieved with a prototype setup optimized for energies around 20 keV are presented, the future developments of the technique are discussed.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Hydropower is a flexible energy source that is essential for balancing the electrical power system on all timescales, from seconds to years. In addition to intra-hour regulation, it provides frequency containment reserves (FCR-N,FCR-D) and frequency restoration reserves (mFRR, aFRR) to the grid. The turbine governor is a device responsible for controlling the power output and delivering frequency control to the system. The aim of this Master’s Thesis project is to develop a new hydropower turbine governor in MATLAB/Simulink, which contains all critical functionality from the existing governor and with the same performance. The new governor should as far as possible comply to the well-established communication standard IEC 61850. A working model of the turbine governor has been built in Simulink that supports normal operation with frequency control, start and stop, load rejection, operation mode as synchronous condenser and more. Validations of the model against data from Akkats powerplant shows that the model behaves as a real governor during normal operation. Validations of the start sequence showed deviations during sequence 3 and 4 which can be explained by usage of different PID parameters. Using IEC 61850 as a nomenclature and as a way of structuring functions in the governor has also been possible. Implementing the whole standard for communication, requires that the control system also is renewed according to IEC 61850. Certain functions, as sequencing has thus not been done according to the standard. MATLAB and Simulink provide tools for building, simulating and testing implementations of the turbine governor. The contributions this platform can provide are; ease of implementation, optimization and testing of control strategies. Simulink also provides a graphical interface, which reduce system complexity. An optimal implementation requires a hardware with support for Simulink to get a transparent platform. Ultimately, these benefits could result in better frequency quality at a lower cost, which is essential for successful and cost-effective integration of other renewable energy sources such as wind- and solar power.

Abstract:
In recent years, the demand for cooling has increased with urbanization. District cooling as a technique started in Sweden in 1992 and has been steadily evolving ever since. The technology is now available in several facilities throughout the country. Cold water is sent from a deep water source found in nature to a heat exchanger and led into a facility in need of cooling. The flow of hot water that returns to the tank is separated from the cold because of the difference in density. Cold water can thus be pumped out independently of the hot until the entire tank consists of hot return water. The purpose of this report is to create laminar flow out of the perforated pipes by using diffusers and thereby maintaining the separation of hot and cold water. Diffusers can help minimize the thermocline thickness and thus increase the cooling capacity of the tank. By studying previous research in the area six diffuser designs have been proposed. The proposals have then been tested using calculations in MatLAB combined with flow simulations in COMSOL Multiphysics to achieve results. The assumptions for this study are uniform flow throughout the pressure pipe with neglected pressure losses along and only taking one discharge process into consideration.A sensitivity analysis has been carried out where the diffuser radius, height above the inlet, mass flow and the inlet temperature has varied. The results showed that the rounded and perforated diffuser led to the thinnest thermocline of 3.26m with a relatively high height above the bottom of the tank which satisfies the goals.

Abstract:
OpenFlow is a widely used protocol for software defined networks (SDNs) that presents a new paradigm in which the control plane is abstracted from the forwarding plane for the network devices. This approach differs from the conventional networking architecture, where both planes reside on the same networking device. In SDN approach centralized entities called “controllers” act like network operating systems run different applications that manage and control the network via well-defined APIs. OpenFlow switch is the forwarding plane in SDN architecture that has tables of packet-handling rules. Traffics passing the switch are compared against these rules and a match – action method is applied to the traffics. Depending on the rules installed by a controller application, an OpenFlow switch can act like a router, a switch, or a middle box without much caring about what kind of vendor to use in the network. Data centers’ networking is one of the applications that showed successful integration with OpenFlow protocol by making the network more consistent to the rapidly expanding number of virtual machines. But with the growing traffic in the data centers, the need for high controllers’ performance increases. Therefore, in this thesis we presented a performance evaluation in both throughput and latency perspectives for the current well-known OpenFlow controllers: NOX, Beacon, Floodlight, Maestro, OpenMul, and OpenIRIS. Controller benchmarking tool was implemented for incremental number of switches connected to the controller under test, and the results show that the OpenMul controller has the highest throughput, while OpenIRIS controller shows the lowest latency.

Abstract:
Introduction of web technology have turned the current world into a global village and web design becomes a huge challenge to develop a website in a better way. To develop a user friendly interface and easy access environment of webpage is the key issue of usability in this field. Improved and user friendly interface of a web site is becoming more popular. There are so many mistakes being committed when a designer develops end users interface of a web site. The main purpose of usability in this field is to provide a user friendly, easy access environment. This paper reveals a guideline for usability of the website design. Most of the designer or developer thinks about their websites outlooks rather than thinking about users’ concern. If it becomes difficult to use their website, people won’t revisit their site. So if designers want to have a successful website, they have to ensure that their design fulfills the users’ requirement. The purpose of this paper is to indicate the existing common usability issues which are being overlooked by the designers and developers, and to provide some possible solutions to reduce these usability problems. It also suggests some simple but effective tips and techniques as well as some guidelines for website design that could be helpful for designer and developer if they keep these in mind during designing a website. The results of the paper specify that there should be the interest to designers and developers who are concerned about improvement of usability and more accessibility of their websites by users. In this thesis, I am committed to create the understanding on the aspects of usability principles suitable to make a user interface more acceptable to the users. This understanding will surely be a pilot project for upcoming future researches on the development of interface design.

Abstract:
The topic of this thesis is situated in the framework of theoretical spectroscopy. In particular, I propose a new ab-initio derivation to find approximations for the one-body Green's function (GF) . This approach leads to an improved description of fermion-plasmon coupling in the framework of many-body perturbation theory (MBPT), which can be used to study direct and inverse photoemission spectroscopy. Although the observed phenomena have been well known before, my formulation yields a better description than previous state-of-the-art approaches. It answers several open questions, cures some fundamental shortcomings and suggests a way for systematic improvement. In photoemission spectroscopy, a sample is irradiated by photons and electrons are emitted. From the energy difference of the incoming photon and outgoing electron, a great deal of information on the properties of the sample can be obtained, e.g. the band structures or lifetimes of excitations. In an independent-particle picture, this energy difference corresponds to the one-particle energy level that the emitted electron was occupying before the measurement. This leads to a sharp peak in the spectrum, with weight normalized to one. In reality, photoemission is not just photons in and independent electrons out, because the sample is an interacting many-body system. The Coulomb interaction and the anti-symmetric nature of fermions give rise to the so-called exchange-correlation effects, which makes the problem fundamentally difficult to solve. The description, understanding and prediction of the effects of the Coulomb interaction on the properties of materials has been one of the big challenges of theoretical condensed matter physics for ages. In the framework of this thesis one can imagine that first, the photoemission creates a hole (i.e., a missing electron) in the sample, which causes all remaining electrons to relax. Due to the attractive interaction between positively charged holes and negatively charged electrons, the electrons move towards to the holes and dress them to create ''quasi-particles''. The effective interaction between quasi-particles is the dynamically screened Coulomb interaction. It is in general weaker than the bare Coulomb interaction. Consequently, the observed band structure is a quasi-particle band structure, which differs from the result of an independent-particles band structure calculation. Second, when the hole propagates in the sample the remaining electrons can show collective oscillations, the density response to the perturbation. These are neutral excitations with approximately bosonic nature, because they are constituted by pairs of fermions. The coupling of the hole to the neutral excitations leads to additional structures in the photoemission spectrum, called satellites. This reduces the quasi-particle weight that is now fractional. Most often, the dominant satellites are due to plasmons, collective long-range oscillations, but one can also observe interband transitions or excitons, or other satellites that are due to more complicated couplings. This overview shows that in order to have a good description of photoemission spectroscopy, we should study the propagation of particles, as well as the interaction between particles and plasmons or other excitations. The Green's function gives the probability amplitude of particles propagating from one point to another. Its imaginary part yields the spectral function that has a direct link to the spectrum measured in a photoemission experiment. The derivations and approximations proposed in this thesis give a new way to calculate the Green's function, which improves the description of photoemission spectroscopy. Moreover, it gives access to other quantities that can be obtained from the one-body Green's function, in particular total energies

Abstract:
A disruptive technology (or a disruptive innovation) is an innovation, generally created by smaller and less resourceful companies, that creates a new market and a value network, and finally goes on to disrupt an existing market and value network, challenging the dominant companies in a certain sector. Blockchain, a protocol for exchanging value over the internet where there is no central authority to intermediate in the process, has been defined as one of the most potential disruptive innovations in the modern days. This technology has different applications in a wide variety of sectors and has the potential to alter existing and create entirely new and unprecedented business models, posing a direct threat of disruption to traditional incumbents. The goal of this thesis is to understand the impact the blockchain can have on business models. After a review of blockchain technology, its features, and the current adoption of this innovation in the market, the focus will lie on the business side. Thanks to multiple research works and the use of the Business Model Canvas it will be analyzed how blockchain has an impact on business models, what archetypal patterns of business models can be identified, and which are the most promising sectors for its application. A case study analysis taking into consideration a set of blockchain companies operating in different sectors will be performed in order to understand the validity of the obtained results.

Abstract:
My work speaks to the processes of adaptation and assimilation, phenomena that explain the way in which we transform life experience and incorporate the effects of such experience into the daily workings of our psyche. To this extent my work is a self-analysis, an autobiographical reckoning, a non-verbal representation of collective experiences rendered in forms upon which images are spontaneously drawn or painted with fiber. The process of making art as a means of accessing creative instincts is a manifestation of the way in which I experience life. Adapting and assimilating to our human condition is an art, a form of survival that allows for self-expression as a technique of understanding, a way of translating beauty into collective consciousness, a means of transforming atrocity too enormous for words, an offer of conversation that transcends human reason, a sharing of imagination that embraces the past, the present and the future. As the world grows increasingly complex, our very existence is threatened by terrorist attacks, natural disasters, and socioeconomic confusion. A culture driven by consumerism responds to global competition for technology that races against the speed of light. Human misunderstanding is relegated to war, courts of law and bi-partisan politics. Adapting and assimilating life circumstances and experiences with a sensitivity to the interplay of intensely colorful fiber in my hands affects an optimistic and energetic reinterpretation of life's complexity. In a time of uncertainty, art is a reason for hope.
