Abstract:
This article describes the art and architectural research project Preemptive Architecture that uses artistic strategies and approaches to create bomb-ready architectural structures that act as instruments for the undoing of violence in war. Increasing environmental usability through destruction represents an inverse strategy that reverses common thinking patterns about warfare, art and architecture. Building structures predestined for a construc­tive destruction becomes a creative act. One of the main motivations behind this paper is to challenge and expand the material thinking as well as the socio-political conditions related to artistic, architectural and design based practices. Abstract The north-eastern French city of Nancy is one of the centres of Art Nouveau. It has been analysed in detail in many classical reviews Art Nouveau, but mainly in relation to decorative applied art works produced at the Nancy School of Art. The study pays attention also to the Nancy architecture. The architectural and artistic qualities of the iconic Art Nouveau architectural monument Villa L. Majorelle are analysed in detail, and the basic data about works of É. André, H. Gutton, J. Hornecker, L. Weissenburger, and other Nancy architects are systematized, indicating their place both in the cityscape of Nancy and in the historical context of Art Nouveau architecture in general.

Abstract:
This article presents a perception of architecture in the context of an art. Juxtaposing the terms “architecture” and “art,” explaining them and presenting their mutual correlations contributes to deeper comprehension of the subject issue. Thanks to such an operation, the author of this article proves that, in spite of immense discrepancies of opinions published in the Internet, the typically technical discipline of science can also enchant us with its esthetic values. Although a major part of edifices situated in our environment are only hollow and soulless projections, there are still numerous places in the world that can be distinguished only thanks to outstanding premises, namely Sydney Opera. The article provides also a deep insight into various theses proving that both architects and artists look for an inspiration in the surrounding world, especially in the nature itself. In order to corroborate the aforementioned statements, the author of this paper mentions works of such architects as Jean Nouvel, Mies van der Rohe and Diller + Scofidio. However, there are still some designers who claim that architecture cannot be combined with art, since these two disciplines are completely different and have nothing in common with each other.

Experience in all aspects of software engineering has confirmed the pivotal role of focusing on architectural concerns in the development of complex software-intensive systems. Consequently, the past 20 years has seen significant investments in the theory and practice of software architecture. However, architectural deficiencies are frequently cited as a key factor in the shortcomings and failures that lead to unpredictable delivery of complex operational systems. Here, we consider the art and science of software architecture: we explore the current state of software architecture, identify key architectural trends, and directions in academia and industry, and highlight some of the architectural research challenges which need to be addressed. The paper proposes a detailed agenda of research activities to be carried out by a partnership between academia and industry. While challenges exist in many domains, for this paper we draw examples from one area of particular concern: safety-critical systems.

Architecture, the focus of this issue, is held to be the ‘mother of the arts’. It is also referred to as the ‘queen of the decorative arts’. But in the family of art libraries and art librarianship, architecture is often a neglected stepchild. So I welcome the invitation extended in this issue of the Art Libraries Journal to the ‘Cinderella of the arts’, and hope that her appearance at the art ball will extend beyond midnight.Over the past quarter of a century or so that I have been an architectural librarian, I have sometimes wondered why architecture libraries are isolated from their sister libraries in the world of art and design, and why architecture libraries and librarians feel the need to separate themselves from their art and design siblings. Is it because the art community is uncomfortable with architecture? If so, is this because architecture is outside the mainstream of art education or art history teaching? Or is it because architecture libraries are generally part of professional institutes, schools of architecture or architectural firms, whose concerns and affiliations may have more in common with the engineering sciences (civil, structural, materials, environmental), the building and construction industries, urban and landscape design, town and country planning, and estate, project and business management, than with the more scholarly and historical focus of art libraries in museums and universities?

This thesis examines the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, designed and executed between 1966 and 1972 by the architect Louis I. Kahn. This study responds to a series of design related questions raised in the author's mind upon visiting the Kimbell museum on June 22, 2000. The work will evaluate the buildings' major design elements, beginning with the overall site and building organization, and end with the relationship between structure, space and natural light. The building is documented with numerous photographs taken during my visit to illustrate its experiential aspects. This study examines how the Kimbell Art Museum prompts 'readings and re-readings,' associations, symbolisms, and meanings that may initially appear elusive, contradictory or even obscure. My analysis suggests that Louis Kahn designed the Kimbell to generate obscure readings, or to be more precise, he utilized ambiguous design features capable of being understood in two or more possible senses. My analysis also raises questions such as, 'What types of ambiguity are employed in this museum, and why?', and 'How does the Kimbell Art Museum as both building and experience compare to Kahn's stated design goals?' The lens through which this examination takes place is my own experience of the building, tempered by an examination of the building's documentation compared to what Kahn wrote, sketched and built. This project aims to offer plausible insights into the building'S numerous, seemingly ambiguous design features. The process of reading and re-reading the Kimbell reveals elusive aspects of the building that to date, have not been adequately considered and articulated. The object of this study is twofold: first, enhance understanding and appreciation of Louis 1.

Abstract:
Architecture and arts practices were arguably kept apart during the first half of the 20th century, resisting an emerging overlap that was conducted by both artists and architects. Installation art has subsequently emerged as an art practice but has shared many qualities with architecture because of its creation of spatial territory. Thus, in contemporary art, installation art has been moving in the fluxes between art and architecture. In the case of installation art, a temporary space is created along with a new kind of engagement and perception of the places around us. It motivates the spectator’s imagination when they are inside, experiencing a shelter that is new to the context. At the same time, it motivates memories of that experience after the installation space is removed. Mediating architecture with a spatial medium like an installation invites a new reading of the space to be applied. This reading opposes the interpretation of architecture as still signs, objects or still images, mainly because of the continuous unfolding of the art installation and the close involvement of the viewer in the spectating journey. Consequently, mediating the exhibition space through an installation creates narratives that are subjective and context-specific, while their transition through other mediums continues to alter the original narrative after the work is dismantled. Driven from the proposition that the event of a temporary installation can be articulated by the ‘event’; a concept that French philosopher Gilles Delleuze addresses in his study: The Fold, which considers the accumulated influence of a number of perceptions of space, the thesis discusses the alternative scenarios of reading the temporary architectural space while focusing on the narrative of these architectural happenings by referring mainly to Mieke Bal’s ‘narratology’ as an approach to this new understanding. Before experiencing examples of installation art, a methodological technique; collage- de-collage-re-collage, is presented as a tool to negotiate the narratives collected from the case studies. It is formulated after a theoretical structure is set to investigate the case studies where a need to develop tools of analysis and representation becomes obvious to the work. The study then tests the proposed theoretical framework on three examples, each of which represents a level of temporality in space. As they unfold, the study tracks the encounters that may be further used as instruments to extend the understanding of installation art in particular and temporary spaces in general.

A presente dissertação é o resultado de uma pesquisa fenomenológica, onde o objeto de pesquisa são as inter-relações entre a arquitetura e as expressões artísticas contemporâneas em Inhotim. A teoria da fenomenologia entende que a experiência sensorial do espaço é também uma função singular da arquitetura. Em arquitetura ela é demonstrada pela manipulação de elementos materiais e imateriais do espaço, a fim de produzir um impacto nos sentidos humanos. Desde a consolidação da arte contemporânea, particularmente da arte pós- objeto2 como arte ambiental, site-specific, new media, instalações e outras que promovem experiências sensoriais, tem se fortalecido a necessidade preservação das relações entre a obra e seu lugar. Mudanças no caráter essencial da arte, como a arte é, tem interferido no formato coerente dos espaços para arte. Portanto, por meio do estudo de caso do Inhotim, a questão central que direciona esta dissertação é como as mudanças nos paradigmas nas artes trouxeram novas conformações arquitetônicas que melhor acomodam a arte contemporânea. Este trabalho é organizado em três escalas de análise dessa inter-relação: (1) a escala do “fato” artístico em relação ao espaço; (2) a escala da galeria em relação ao fato artístico; e, (3) a escala de todo espaço físico do museu, analisando Inhotim como um todo, lendo sua forma que é orientada por percursos, suas paisagens construídas e seu conjunto arquitetônico. This thesis is the result of a phenomenological research study, where the object of the research is the interrelations between architecture and contemporary artistic expressions at Inhotim. The theory of phenomenology acknowledges that the sensory experience of space is also unique function of space. In architecture it is demonstrated through the manipulation of material and immaterial elements of space in order to produce an impact on the human senses. Since the consolidation of contemporary art, particularly post-object1 art such as environment, site-specific, new media, installations and others that convey sensorial experiences, the need to preserve the relationship between the work and its place has strengthened. Changes in what/how art is have interfered in how art spaces are. Therefore, through the case of the Inhotim, the central matter that this thesis seeks to address is how the changes of paradigms in the arts brought about new architectural conformations that better accommodate contemporary art. This work is organized in three scales of analysis of this interrelation: (1) the scale of the artistic fact in relation to space; (2) the scale of the gallery in relation to the artistic fact; and, (3) the scale of the whole physical space of the museum, approaching Inhotim as whole, reading into its path- oriented form, its created landscapes and architectural set. Abstract: Le Corbusier developed his own unique poetics of architecture, perceived and understood as an art. In La Ronchamp, due to his complete creative freedom, he found a space to express his most poetic and artistic views. The research paper thus analysis the Chapel as a case study, in order to clarify Corbusier’s artistic and architectural vision, ideals and driving principles: drawing firstly from the architectural characteristics that define the space, secondly defining an integrated set of principles that conceptualize the architecture as an art, and lastly, an analysis of the particularities that compose the chapel as a ‘total work of art’, analyzing the union of the arts, both in concept, form and meaning, and in the overall context of Corbusier’s unqiue theory. Thus, the research paper aims to understand and uncover how the poetics and emotional condition lives through Ronchamp: the meaning it encases, the artistic values is sustains and the timeless ways it recreates. The overall study has both practical and theoretical applications and implications for architects and artists with an interest in the integration of art and architecture, as well as the conceptual connections between the arts; a vital issue in the contemporary world for the definition of a more meaningful and sustainable environment. SHORT PAPER. With the aim of reconsidering the very nature of architecture, we propose a conceptual tool to think of architectural apparatuses as actors within a continuum composed of both artificial and natural agents. For this,we look at the cognitive sciences, particularly the 4E cognitive (embodied, embedded, enactive, and extended). Abstract:
Architecture is a collective technological human practice to control local environments in order to protect the human body. Depending on the worldview and cosmology of the society which produces the architecture—increasingly the global worldview is rational, mono-technological and Western—this practice gives more or less space for nonhuman agency. This paper looks at ways to loosen the contemporary Western obsession with controlling the environment architecturally by exploring different forms of architectural memento mori (remember you must die). The act of willing (poiesis) protective-controlling architecture (technology) into the world, inside a certain worldview (cosmology), is explored through the conceptual entanglement of those three notions: cosmo-techno-poiesis. The paper concludes with an architectural example and a short summary.

Abstract:
As an emerging field, Automated Machine Learning (AutoML) aims to reduce or eliminate manual operations that require expertise in machine learning. In this paper, a graph-based architecture is employed to represent flexible combinations of ML models, which provides a large searching space compared to tree-based and stacking-based architectures. Based on this, an evolutionary algorithm is proposed to search for the best architecture, where the mutation and heredity operators are the key for architecture evolution. With Bayesian hyper-parameter optimization, the proposed approach can automate the workflow of machine learning. On the PMLB dataset, the proposed approach shows the state-of-the-art performance compared with TPOT, Autostacker, and auto-sklearn. Some of the optimized models are with complex structures which are difficult to obtain in manual design.

Nowadays one of the most popular trends in software development is Augmented Reality (AR). AR applications offer an interactive user experience and engagement through a real-world environment. AR application areas include archaeology, architecture, business, entertainment, medicine, education and etc. In the paper we compared the main SDKs for the development of a marker-based AR apps and 3D modeling freeware computer programs used for developing 3D-objects. We presented a concept, design and development of AR application “Art-Heritage’’ with historical monuments and buildings of Crimean Tatars architecture (XIII-XX centuries). It uses a smartphone or tablet to alter the existing picture, via an app. Using “Art-Heritage’’ users stand in front of an area where the monuments used to be and hold up mobile device in order to see an altered version of reality.

The article is devoted to actual problem of using modern ICT tools to increase the level of efficiency of the educational process. The current state and relevance of the use of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies as an appropriate means of improving the educational process are considered. In particular, attention is paid to the potential of the combined capabilities of AR and VR technologies with adaptive learning systems. Insufficient elaboration of cross-use opportunities for achieving of efficiency of the educational process in state-of-the-art research has been identified. Based on analysis of latest publications and experience of using of augmented and virtual reality technologies, as well as the concept of adaptive learning, conceptual model of learning based on the combined capabilities of AR and VR technologies with adaptive learning systems has been designed. The use of VR and AR technologies as a special information environment is justified, which is applied in accordance with the identified dominant type of students' thinking. The prospects of using the proposed model in training process at educational institutions for the implementation and support of new teaching and learning strategies, as well as improving learning outcomes are determined by the example of such courses as “Algorithms and data structures”, “Computer graphics and three-dimensional modeling”, “Circuit Engineering”, “Computer Architecture”.

Autonomous vehicles (AVs) have a great potential to transform the way we live and work, significantly reducing traffic accidents and harmful emissions on the one hand and enhancing travel efficiency and fuel economy on the other. Nevertheless, the safe and efficient control of AVs is still challenging because AVs operate in dynamic environments with unforeseen challenges. This project aimed to advance the state-of-the-art by designing a proactive/reactive adaptation and learning architecture for connected vehicles, unifying techniques in spatiotemporal data fusion, machine learning, and robust adaptive control. By leveraging data shared over a cloud network available to all entities, vehicles proactively adapted to new environments on the proactive level, thus coping with large-scale environmental changes. On the reactive level, control-barrier-function-based robust adaptive control with machine learning improved the performance around nominal models, providing performance and control certificates. The proposed research shaped a robust foundation for autonomous driving on cloud-connected highways of the future.

"Formally trained architects in India participate in building habitation for less than 10 per cent of the population. Most architecture created through the involvement of architects produces segregation and discrimination towards certain classes, castes and genders. This study is concerned with the role of formal architectural education in addressing the habitation question and issues of spatial justice. Towards this, a review of the educational ecosystem for architecture has been undertaken. This ecosystem includes institutions, universities, regulatory bodies, journals, events, awards and offices. The study also briefly looks at cases of habitation making for the remaining 90 per cent who do not get served by trained architects. From our review, it is apparent that this ecosystem is structurally, institutionally and pedagogically insufficient to produce a relevant spatial culture, spatial justice or cultural sustainability. While it is structurally located within a political economy where education is a money-making enterprise, it is institutionally geared to reduce academia to educational organisations and pedagogically oriented to prepare students for a building industry of a certain kind. Yet, despite the odds, architectural institutions have been innovating and striving to create relevance. Their efforts will remain key for the overhaul of the ecosystem and they will have to steer the process of change."

The main goals of this project as stated in the original proposal were to identify which of the candidate gene(s) identified in a 1.5 Mb region of wheat and rye chromosomes 1RS and 1BS were responsible for the differences in root architecture, reveal their natural variation and characterize the epistatic interactions that modulate their effect in different backgrounds. Background: Wheat is an essential crop for global food security and is well adapted to a wide variety of soils. However, the gene networks regulating different wheat root architectures remain poorly understood. Root depth and biomass distribution in the soil profile are critical traits for adaptation to water stress, and a good source for these traits is the introgression of the short arm of rye chromosome one (1RS) into common wheat. A recombinant 1RS chromosome with a small wheat 1BS introgressions and a duplicated 1RS segment (1RW) showed reduced drought tolerance and was used for the identification of the causal genes.

This report proposes a suite of wireless sensing solutions for continuous transportation-infrastructure monitoring. First, various traditional and modern sensors and sensing platforms are described in detail, based on their principles of operation, suitability for transportation-infrastructure monitoring, and issues concerning their use. Then, a suitability-assessment survey conducted to select suitable inter-sensor and sensor-to-cloud communication technology for lower bandwidth and higher bandwidth requiring sensors is presented. Important observations are made, and conclusions are drawn based on multidisciplinary analyses of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) of various communication technologies and proposed wireless architectures for sensing infrastructure for smart mobility (SISM). Finally, recommendations are made concerning the implementation of proposed wireless architectures for wireless and continuous monitoring of the Illinois Autonomous and Connected Track (I-ACT).
