Abstract:
This study aims to compare the factors that affect financial performance between Manchester United Plc and the similar industries by examinating financial ratios trends before and during the Covid-19 pandemic. The object under study was the Manchester United football club, while the industry average used the six biggest football clubs in the English Premier League, such as Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur. This study used a literature study method by collecting relevant data and information according to the topics discussed through various literatures. In addition, this study also using financial ratio indicators that were applied to the football industry to measure the financial performance of a football club. The data used were secondary data in the form of company financial statements from 2018 to 2020 from the company's official website. The results of this study conclude that Manchester United's financial performance tends to decrease,, especially in profitability due to the postponement of the competition during the Covid-19 pandemic. On the other hand, Manchester United's financial performance was stated to be good in terms of efficient management of employee payroll expenses and sponsorship contract revenues. Therefore, investors need to review the condition of football clubs based on financial ratios before making investment decisions on football clubs.

Abstract:
A financially successful football club can achieve sporting achievements as well as become financially stable. From this point of view, in this study, the efficiencies of clubs were investigated with the Bi-Objective Multi-Criteria Data Envelopment Analysis (BiO-MCDEA) model by using financial and sporting data of the 2015-2016, 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 seasons of 10 football clubs in the Big-Five League which is the locomotive of the football industry. In the study, the number of social media followers, the average number of viewers and total market value were used as input, and the UEFA club score and total revenues were used as output. As a result, Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain, and Juventus were determined as efficient in the 2015-2016 season, Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool in the 2016-2017 season, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea in the 2016-2017 season. The reasons as to why Paris Saint-Germain was efficient in all three seasons were also examined. In addition, in the sensitivity analysis conducted to determine the effect of inputs and outputs on the model, it was concluded that efficiency was highly related to financial data.

Abstract:
Traditional work on bystander intervention in violent emergencies has found that the larger the group, the less the chance that any individual will intervene. Here, we tested the impact on helping behavior of the affiliation of the bystanders with respect to the participants. We recruited 40 male supporters of the U.K. Arsenal football club for a two-factor between groups study with 10 participants per group. Each participant spoke with a virtual human Arsenal supporter (V), the scenario displayed in a virtual reality system. During this conversation, another virtual character (P), not an Arsenal fan, verbally abused V for being an Arsenal fan leading eventually to physical pushing. There was a group of three virtual bystanders who were all either Arsenal supporters indicated by their shirts, or football fans wearing unbranded shirts. These bystanders either encouraged the participant to intervene or dissuaded him. We recorded the number of times that participants intervened to help V during the aggression. We found that participants were more likely to intervene when the bystanders were out-group with respect to the participant. By comparing levels of intervention with a “baseline” study (identical except for the presence of bystanders), we conclude that the presence of in-group bystanders decreases helping. We argue therefore that, other things being equal, diffusion of responsibility is more likely to be overcome when participant and victim share group membership, but bystanders do not. Our findings help to develop understanding of how diffusion of responsibility works by combining elements of both the bystander effect and the social identity approach to bystander behavior.

Abstract:
Introduction: Whilst there is some preliminary evidence for the benefits of sports-related interventions for survivors of torture, how sport and exercise can contribute to the rehabilitation of torture survivors needs to be better understood. Specifically, this paper aims to: 1) explore the ways in which a football group contributed to the wellbeing of participants and; 2) suggest characteristics of the football group which could potentially contribute to its effectiveness. Methods: An exploratory mixed methods study was undertaken with participants and trainers of a joint programme delivered by Arsenal Football Club and Freedom from Torture in London. Individual discussions, group discussions and participatory ranking activities were used which led to the development of an initial programme model. This model was, subsequently, further developed through a variety of data collection methods. Results: Six potential outcomes of involvement in the football group were identified: relationships, a sense of belonging, hope for the future, emotion management, enjoyment, and improved physical health. In addition, the process highlighted factors contributing to the effectiveness of the football group: a sense of safety, therapeutic aims, similar participants, a partnership approach, staff characteristics, other opportunities, and consistency in terms of approach, session content and staff. Conclusions: This exploratory study outlines the potential benefits of the football programme that would require further validation through a case-control study and participant follow-up. A model is put forward as well as a number of recommendations that serve as a starting point for similar programmes and guides academic research in the area.

Abstract:
This research is an attempt to explore possible solutions to the privatization of Saudi football clubs. It examines the business models of legendary internationally renowned football clubs i.e. Barcelona, Arsenal, Manchester City, and Juventus in order to select the best fit business model to implement in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The strategic vision of KSA’s 2030 is to privatize Saudi football clubs and detach them from any government involvement and make them financially independent like other successful international clubs. The purpose of this research is to provide a pathway to facilitate the Saudi Government’s 2030 vision to diversify the Saudi economy, generate income and to establish multiple revenue streams for Saudi football clubs, so they can be fully independent and not rely on any support from the government. In this research, we chose four successful international clubs; and analyze their business model. From there we chose the best fit business model that can be implemented into Saudi football clubs to start confidently when they privatize.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In the past two decades the sports sector has turned its attention to understanding the idea of sustainability, particularly to the practical steps related to this. The purpose of this study is to investigate the nature of CSR (corporate social responsibility) activities carried out by teams playing in the Premier League and the Primera División in the 2018/2019 season, and how these CSR actions serve environmental protection and society, manifesting the concept of sustainable development. We applied comparative analysis based on secondary databases. We examined the available reports regarding all the 40 teams, focusing on information about their CSR aspirations and related academic research results, and we worked out specific criteria to evaluate environmentally and socially related CSR activities. Arsenal and Real Madrid were chosen to show good practices that can serve as examples for the other members of the sports sector. At Premier League clubs, the practical application of the CSR activities has been intensively developed. Clubs share detailed statistical information about their actions, while some of the clubs even publish their future plans. The quantity and detail of the information found with Primera División clubs is rather varied. Some clubs introduce their CSR activities in full detail; however, in the case of most clubs, the accessible information is rather superficial and lacks any exact descriptions. The findings clearly show that the sports world is consciously shifting towards the realization of sustainable development, which requires a comprehensive reconnection of sporting society and an increase in awareness in order to achieve the efficient and successful integration of CSR activities into sport.

Abstract:
Arsene Wenger stands today as one of the most respected figures in world football for a wide variety of factors. Standing for consistency and quality, his purpose was found in football management rather than an eight-year playing career in France included a league title with Strasbourg in 1978–79. His stature and credentials in the game is second to none reflected by the fact that he has been serving as FIFA’s chief of global football development following his retirement from management. His principles aided in building a persona and a brand which few could challenge, much less surpass. Born in France, in 1949, he is famous for having managed Arsenal F.C for 22 years which made the second longest serving a club after Sir Alex Ferguson. As his autobiography titled, “My life in Red and White”, Arsene Wenger had immense loyalty to his club perhaps an evidence of divine intervention that his name should sound so close to the place he called home for 22 years. Appropriately called ‘Le professeur’ by the media, which indicates the love and affection which came his way from the British media, which is arguably one of the most challenging in the entire sport of football. Perhaps it was a Masters degree in economics which earned him the respect but followers of the English premier league would attest to the fact that there have been fewer classy and sophisticated managers to have graced one of the oldest leagues in the world. As his autobiography reveals, Wenger brought in an era of scientific management to British football. It extended to scout in, play as training, and diet meticulously planned to ensure maximum performance, thereby bringing forth globalisation to the sport which was played with celebrating bad boys from the decades gone by. Wenger‘s penchant for developing young talents, emphasising on attacking football, relying on philosophy when most managers resorted to downright pragmatism through defensive football and most importantly, the ability to operate on a tight budget despite losing his talents to richer clubs are to be immensely appreciated. Wenger was unceremoniously kicked out from management with one year remaining on his contract following quite a strong narrative calling for his ouster owing to lack of trophies one in the last decade office management at Arsenal. This chapter dives into what management principles Arsenal had put into place with Wenger at the helm (Wenger 78). As Arsenal’s manager, Arsene Wenger was one of the longest serving managers in the EPL. He initially played football for amateur clubs and then went on to play for Strasbourg in the French league. In 1981, he completed his coaching qualifications and was appointed at Cannes, Nancy and later Monaco. Arsene Wengerwas recruited to Arsenal while coaching in Japan and arrived as a relatively unknown manager in 1996, bringing a scientific approach to training. During his time at Arsenal, the club won three EPL titles and seven Football Association (FA) Cups. In 2004, the team (nicknamed “The Invincibles”) was unbeaten throughout the season. Arsene Wengerleft Arsenal at the end of the 2017/2018 season (Berndt 34).

Abstract:
AbstractVirtual reality (VR) affords the study of the behaviour of people in social situations that would be logistically difficult or ethically problematic in reality. The laboratory-controlled setup makes it straightforward to collect multi-modal data and compare the responses across different experimental conditions. However, the scenario is typically fixed and the resulting data are usually analysed only once the VR experience has ended. Here we describe a method that allows adaptation of the environment to the behaviours of participants and where data is collected and processed during the experience. The goal was to examine the extent to which helping behaviour of participants towards the victim of a violent aggression might be encouraged, with the use of reinforcement learning (RL). In the scenario, a virtual human character represented as a supporter of the Arsenal Football Club, was attacked by another with the aggression escalating over time. (In some countries football is referred to as ‘soccer’, but we will use ‘football’ throughout). Each participant, a bystander in the scene, might intervene to help the victim or do nothing. By varying the extent to which some actions of the virtual characters during the scenario were determined by the RL we were able to examine whether the RL resulted in a greater number of helping interventions. Forty five participants took part in the study divided into three groups: with no RL, a medium level of RL, or full operation of the RL. The results show that the greater extent to which the RL operated the greater the number of interventions. We suggest that this methodology could be an alternative to full multi-factorial experimental designs, and more importantly as a way to produce adaptive VR scenarios that encourage participants towards a particular line of action.

Full text
Abstract:
On 18 April 2021, six of the most storied clubs in English football – Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur – announced they would be joining a new breakaway European Super League. These proposals triggered vehement opposition from football fans, which catalysed the intervention of the UK government in the form of a fan-led review of football governance. The reaction to the European Super League – which collapsed within 48 hours – demonstrates that the commodification and globalisation of football is contested. This article applies the lens of moral economy to analyse the contemporary mobilisations of football fans in England counter to these processes. The novel application of a moral economy framework provides a fresh perspective within the extant literature on football fan activism. This article represents the first systematic application of a moral economy approach to the political sociology of contemporary sport and its fandom. Employing an expanded understanding of moral economy, the article extends its application beyond the analysis of pre-modern food riots popularised by E.P. Thompson, incorporating the insights of Karl Polanyi and Andrew Sayer. Adopting this broader meaning, the concept of moral economy enables us to explore emergent and dynamic forms of fan activism, which seek to contest the commodification of football. The supporter mobilisations against the European Super League are examined to illuminate this perspective. Through an exploration of the contingency of the moral economy of football fandom, this article expands, in conceptual terms, the literature on football-based social movements, connecting it to the wider commodification and financialisation of football (as an important aspect of everyday life) and the internal contradictions and crisis of advanced capitalism.
