Abstract:
In a 1995 paper, Raab et al. questioned Arnold’s assertion that high sea temperatures in prehistoric southern California resulted in maritime subsistence disaster. The current discussion by Arnold et al. argues that our data were flawed and taken out of sociocultural context. Not only are these claims unfounded, they are based largely on an unfortunate strategy of combining uniformitarian and interpretivist analytical frameworks

Recently V. Arnold introduced Strangeness and J± invariants of generic immersions of an oriented circle to ℝ2. Here these invariants are generalized to the case of generic immersions of an oriented circle to an arbitrary surface F. We explicitly describe all the invariants satisfying axioms, which naturally generalize the axioms used by V. Arnold.

Abstract:
It is not indeed necessary to own a country in order to do trade with it or invest capital in it.—J. A. Hobson, 1902 WHEN WE EXAMINEAlfred Tennyson's and Matthew Arnold's poetic depictions of the wealth of the East, we find that most poems respond to one of two impulses. Some poems seem motivated mainly by the same classic orientalism that is exemplified by those poems of the Romantic period that represent the East as a world apart, untouched by time. But Arnold and Tennyson also wrote poems driven more by the imperialist currents that strengthened throughout the Victorian period; these poems show the East becoming increasingly assimilated into the very modern world of commerce within the British imperial system. In their poems on Eastern wealth, then, Arnold and Tennyson seem not only to be working through their inheritance from Romanticism (specifically, Romantic orientalism), but also to be negotiating between more traditional notions of value and those specific to the developing political and economic systems of the Victorian age. Ultimately, these poems' conception of the wealth of the East is at least consistent with, if not also implicated in, the conflicted evolution of imperialist ideology.

Abstract:
While most scholarship on appeasement focuses on its later stages in Europe – culminating in the Munich Agreement – policymakers and public intellectuals throughout the early and mid-1930s were exercised by appeasement in a different context. These prominent Britons, concerned by increasing international tensions and conscious of the resentments engendered by having a globe-spanning empire, sought to contrive some way to appease the revisionist powers without betraying their liberal internationalist principles or harming British national interests. At the center of these debates was Arnold J. Toynbee, director of studies at Chatham House. A devoted liberal internationalist, Toynbee was convinced that a durable peace could be built on appeasement in the context of ‘the colonial question’. This version of appeasement claimed that German interests and honour could be satisfied by finding some way to return Germany to Africa as an imperial power. But the debates over ‘the colonial question’ revealed the extent to which British and German conceptions of the issue diverged. They also demonstrated the inability of liberal internationalists to reconcile their commitment to changing an unsatisfactory status quo with their commitment to preventing the forceful revision of that same status quo; ‘peaceful change’ was therefore elusive.

Abstract:
The synthesis of graphene directly on Ge and on Ge deposited on Si provides a scalable route toward integrating graphene onto conventional semiconductors. This presentation will first survey the growth modes of graphene on Ge(001), Ge(011), Ge(111), Ge(112), Ge(001)-6°, and Ge(001)-9° via chemical vapor deposition (CVD), reporting on the effect of Ge surface orientation on graphene island formation and shape, strain in large-area graphene films, and the nanofaceting of the Ge below graphene.[1] We will then focus on the anisotropic growth of semiconducting graphene nanoribbons on Ge(001) and Ge(001)-9° and of nominally single crystal graphene on Ge(110). On Ge(001), we have discovered how to drive graphene crystal growth with a large shape anisotropy through control of kinetics.[2-6] This discovery enables the direct synthesis of narrow, armchair, semiconducting nanoribbons. The ribbons are self-orienting, self-defining, and have smooth edges. The ribbons exhibit excellent transport properties (e.g., high on-state conductance and on/off ratio at room temperature) and provide a promising pathway towards the direct integration of high-performance nanocarbon electronics onto conventional semiconductor wafer platforms. On Ge(001), nominally single crystal graphene has been reported in limited cases; however, conflicting studies have evidenced polycrystallinity. Here, the factors affecting the mosaicity of graphene on Ge(110) will be elucidated using low energy electron diffraction and microscopy data.[7] [1] R. M. Jacobberger, D. E. Savage, X. Zheng, P. Abstract:
Abstract:
We propose a new image watermarking scheme based on the real SVD and Arnold scrambling to embed a color watermarking image into a color host image. Before embedding watermark, the color watermark image W with size of M×M is scrambled by Arnold transformation to obtain a meaningless image W~. Then, the color host image A with size of N×N is divided into nonoverlapping N/M×N/M pixel blocks. In each (i,j) pixel block Ai,j, we form a real matrix Ci,j with the red, green, and blue components of Ai,j and perform the SVD of Ci,j. We then replace the three smallest singular values of Ci,j by the red, green, and blue values of W~ij with scaling factor, to form a new watermarked host image A~ij. With the reserve procedure, we can extract the watermark from the watermarked host image. In the process of the algorithm, we only need to perform real number algebra operations, which have very low computational complexity and are more effective than the one using the quaternion SVD of color image.

Abstract:
In this paper, we construct, in a unified fashion, lower order finite element subspaces of spaces of symmetric tensors with square-integrable divergence on a domain in any dimension. These subspaces are essentially the symmetric tensor finite element spaces of order [Formula: see text] from [Finite element approximations of symmetric tensors on simplicial grids in [Formula: see text]: The higher order case, J. Comput. Math. 33 (2015) 283–296], enriched, for each [Formula: see text]-dimensional simplex, by [Formula: see text] face bubble functions in the symmetric tensor finite element space of order [Formula: see text] from [Finite element approximations of symmetric tensors on simplicial grids in [Formula: see text]: The higher order case, J. Comput. Math. 33 (2015) 283–296] when [Formula: see text], and by [Formula: see text] face bubble functions in the symmetric tensor finite element space of order [Formula: see text] from [Finite element approximations of symmetric tensors on simplicial grids in [Formula: see text]: The higher order case, J. Comput. Math. 33 (2015) 283–296] when [Formula: see text]. These spaces can be used to approximate the symmetric matrix field in a mixed formulation problem where the other variable is approximated by discontinuous piecewise [Formula: see text] polynomials. This in particular leads to first-order mixed elements on simplicial grids with total degrees of freedom per element [Formula: see text] plus [Formula: see text] in 2D, 48 plus 6 in 3D. The previous record of the degrees of freedom of first-order mixed elements is, 21 plus 3 in 2D, and 156 plus 6 in 3D, on simplicial grids. We also derive, in a unified way which is completely different from those used in [D. Arnold, G. Awanou and R. Winther, Finite elements for symmetric tensors in three dimensions, Math. Comput. 77 (2008) 1229–1251; D. N. Arnold and R. Winther, Mixed finite element for elasticity, Number Math. 92 (2002) 401–419], a family of Arnold–Winther mixed finite elements in any space dimension. One example in this family is the Raviart–Thomas elements in one dimension, the second example is the mixed finite elements for linear elasticity in two dimensions due to Arnold and Winther, the third example is the mixed finite elements for linear elasticity in three dimensions due to Arnold, Awanou and Winther.
