Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis examines the controversy surrounding the publication of Hannah Arendt’s Eichmann in Jerusalem: A Report on the Banality of Evil (1963). More specifically, this study focuses on the American Jewish response to the text, examining how the controversy itself provoked a watershed of change in conceptions and understandings of the Holocaust, and by extension, notions of Jewish identity and discourse in the modern world. This study will consider the importance of viewing the controversy as a conversation rather than simply a rigid dichotomy. In failing to see how each side communicated with the other, scholars sometimes themselves reinforce the rigidity of this division, either by emphasizing only the difference between each side or by defending one position over another. Viewing this controversy as a conversation will also allow this study to examine not only how pre-existing perspectives clashed in the debate, but also how these perspectives were in turn changed by this encounter. The controversy did not simply present opposing views, but built up new views on history and identity as a result. This thesis will end on an investigation of Arendt’s own reaction to the controversy: though she herself provoked the debate, she considered it to have failed in generating a ‘real’ controversy. Arendt believed the Eichmann controversy failed not because her critics misinterpreted her book, but because the debate produced a monolithic response, inhibiting the possibility and endless plurality of opinion Arendt considered hallmarks of effective public discourse. This thesis concludes that the controversy was indeed a ‘real’ one, for both sides openly articulated the necessity of openness, plurality and disagreement in public debates. In the end, this thesis hopes to rewrite the story of the controversy in order to revive its lessons about public discourse rather than repeating historiographical approaches that, in focusing on the ways in which the controversy failed to break down a dichotomy of interpretation, only serving to maintain the static and unproductive logic of the debate. In a word, this thesis defends a new telling of the history of this controversy, one that identifies and learns from the manner in which each side of the debate engaged the other: both ultimately defended the virtue of political contestation and provoked a flood of new questions in scholarship. In short, this study will examine the social reality of an idea.

Abstract:
This work reconstructs Hannah Arendt’s own analyses of the different human activities: work, labour and action in her influential work The Human Condition. Using Arendt’s concept of plurality, not only as mere means for political and/or human diversity, but as a paradigm, the first part further examines to what extent plurality unfolds through the particular activities. Whilst Arendt’s famous conception about ”the rise of the social” is certainly hard to ignore, it is here argued that, there are different ways to adress this notion. The second part is a comparative analysis with Arendt and Sophie Loidolts book Phenomenology of Plurality: Hannah Arendt on Political Intersubjectivity. In that regard this essay also seeks to perceive plurality not only as a paradigm, but through a phenomenological lens, something Loidolt states has been overlooked prior. Loidolts essential argument here is that Arendt uses a phenomenological vocabulary, and its mainly the thematic concepts which she uses thats been analysed and defined - they don’t leave any proper phenomenological traces. However, since Arendt uses a phenomenological vocabulary, operative concepts are also present in her political thought, which clearly have a phenomenological background. According to Loidolt, they are usually left undefined and un-analysed. The second part undertakes such an assignment, that is, applying the phenomenological tools containing in the The Human Condition. What this means is that by analysing and defining the operative concepts, they become tools to understand the thematic concepts. But, what happens with Arendt’s political virtue when exercising the phenomenological tools presented by Loidolt? In this second part, I argue that there is a risk we are drifting away from the political in Arendt’s thought when focusing too much on her evident phenomenological background.

Abstract:
This research aims at examining the concept of freedom in Hannah Arendts thought. For this reason, I start this study with the essay What is Freedom?. In this text, the author presents freedom as belonging to political domain and refuses the Christian and liberal notion of freedom. That is, she denies freedom as free will or absence of constraints. Even though this is the authors most important text on the subject, it is not enough to understand all the properties of her concept of freedom. Therefore, we have to search for other author´s texts, like the book The Human Condition. In this book, Arendt analyses how work and economic issues were valued in the Modernity, bringing serious trouble to free acting. Yet, in The Origins of Totalitarianism, the author shows the radicalism of the totalitarian experience. According to her, the totalitarian regime contributed to amplify the idea that freedom is not experienced in the political realm. In spite of this, Arendt affirms the connection between freedom and acting in a public scene based in the experiences of the Athenian Democracy, the Roman Republic and the modernity revolutions. She writes On Revolution to treat the freedom´s emergence in the Modernity and to show the hardness of founding and giving durability to the area where the free action is possible. I manifest throughout this dissertation several characteristics of the freedom concept, such as the relationship between this concept and Arendt´s political thought and between it and the philosophical tradition. Therefore, in the end of the text I resume this characteristics and relationship in order to interpret Arendt´s concept of freedom as a multifaceted conception.

The propose of this lecture is to rescue, in the writings, her perspective about the sense and the meaning of the human action in the context of the historical understanding of the totalitarian regime and of the crisis of the education in America. In the author’s vision, the history is constituted by unexpected events that interrupt processes. So much the event as the action generates discontinuities and, therefore, they don’t recognize any cause in the strict sense of the term. This text presents reflexions about the theme of the appearance; emphasizes the condition of being alive means to have an impulse of auto-exposition that corresponds to the quality to appear of each one. Appear means to be noticed by the other ones, changing by the spectator interest. About the educational subject, Arendt affirms that in face of the world that must be continually organized, the education performs a central function. It’s very important that the men that live in the world not obstruct the new generations in their futures .The course of this investigation makes possible to affirm that Arendt recuperates the understanding that the human capacity inaugurates something new, that cannot be predict and that corresponds to the own political action for excellence.

Abstract:
In this working paper, I ask whether or not whites could and should write about concerns of People of Color. To this end, I deal with Hannah Arendt’s controversial article “Reflections on Little Rock” from winter 1958/59. In her article, Arendt comments on the de-segregation of black school children in the USA and the associated unrests in Little Rock (Arkansas) and Charlotte (North Carolina) on September 4, 1957. My analysis of her article is initiated by a confrontation of two other texts. In the first, Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race Reni Eddo-Lodge argues that white people are not able to understand the point of view of people of color. In the second, On Kant’s Political Philosophy Hannah Arendt advocates for the contrary that people can understand each other’s point of view when training their imagination to take visits. Since Arendt’s “Reflections on Little Rock” is considered to be a failure, especially in regards of grasping the problems of people of color in the USA, my general question is whether Eddo-Lodge is right, and whether there is no understanding possible or if Arendt missed a crucial step in her own attempt to go visiting? To clarify this, my analysis focuses on Arendt’s use of the term “discrimination”.

Abstract:
This paper looks at the environmental impact of vehicle collisions. TRL has begun modelling to quantify the emissions that result from collisions. We consider different phases of the crashes, and different outcome severities. This modelling can further help inform decision-making in transport policies, both at local and national level. Safety and environmental decisions can go hand in hand.
