Abstract:
To optimize the workflow of civil engineering construction in a harbour, this paper developed a framework of the contaminant leaching assessment carried out on the stabilized/solidified dredged soil material. The specimens included the sampled sediments collected from the in situ fieldwork in Arendal and Kongshavn. The background levels of the concentration of pollutants were evaluated to assess the cumulative surface leaching of substances from samples over two months. The contamination of soil was assessed using a structured workflow scheme on the following toxic substances, heavy metals—As, Pb, Cd, Cr, Hg, Ni, and Zn; organic compounds—PAH-16 and PCB; and organotin compounds—TBT. The numerical computation and data analysis were applied to the results of geochemical testing creating computerised solutions to soil quality evaluation in civil engineering. Data modelling enabled the estimation of leaching of the contaminants in one year. The estimated leaching of As is 0.9153 mg/m2, for Ni—2.8178 mg/m2, for total PAH-16 as 0.0507 mg/m2, and for TBT—0.00061 mg/m2 per year. The performance of the sediments was examined with regard to permeability through a series of the controlled experiments. The environmental engineering tests were implemented in the Swedish Geotechnical Institute (SGI) in a triplicate mode over 64 days. The results were compared for several sites and showed that the amount of As is slightly higher in Kongshavn than for Arendal, while the content of Cd, Cr, and Ni is lower. For TBT, the levels are significantly lower than for those at Arendal. The algorithm of permeability tests evaluated the safety of foundation soil for construction of embankments and structures. The optimized assessment methods were applied for monitoring coastal areas through the evaluated permeability of soil and estimated leaching rates of heavy metals, PHB, PACs, and TBT in selected test sites in harbours of southern Norway.

Abstract:
Norwegian retroflexion exhibits some phonetic properties that do not seem to ‘make sense’. In Standard East Norwegian, an alveolar /ɾ/ causes a following alveolar coronal to become postalveolar, and in the Frogner and Arendal dialects of Norwegian, the same postalveolarisation process is triggered by a uvular /ʁ/. Comparative analyses of Norwegian dialects reveal that these properties are the results of historical changes and phonological diffusion across dialects. Theories attempting to analyse Norwegian retroflexion as phonetically ‘natural’ can neither fully account for these properties of Norwegian retroflexion nor capture the typological generalisations found across Norwegian dialects.

Background. Heart rhythm disorders are common and may be associated with serious complications. The quality of the ECG signal is crucial to detect and classify arrhythmias. Most available devices for assessment arrhythmias do not allow for remote monitoring. The Norwegian ECG247 Smart Heart Sensor is a new remote patch monitor developed to simplify the assessment of arrhythmias. This study was aimed at evaluating the quality of the ECG signal from the ECG247 Smart Heart Sensor compared to standard 12-lead ECG. Methods. ECG recordings with ECG247 Smart Heart Sensor and a standard 12-lead ECG recorder were performed in 97 volunteers at Sorlandet Hospital, Arendal, Norway, in 2019. All ECGs were analysed by two independent cardiologists. Results. A total of 97 participants (53% men, age 48 (±14) years) were included in the study. The ability for both systems to use recorded ECG data for arrhythmia detection was good (100%). The quality of the P-wave (mean score 1.1 vs. 1.5) and the QRS complex (mean score 1.0 vs. 1.0) from the ECG247 Smart Heart Sensor and that from the 12-lead ECG were comparable (scale: 1: extremely good, 9: not accepted). Noise artefacts were a minor issue in all recordings. Conclusions. The ECG quality from the ECG247 Smart Heart Sensor was comparable to the ECG quality from the standard 12-lead ECG. The ECG247 Smart Heart Sensor may enable easy and remote diagnostics of heart rhythm disorders. This trial is registered with NCT04700865.

The institutional model of international scientific and technical cooperation in the field of marine scientific research characterizes the status and activities of subjects. It is mainly expressed in the establishment of international intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations. European research infrastructure consortia act as an independent institutional model.Institutional models of international scientific and technical cooperation can be divided into ecosystem-based and collaborative models. Ecosystem-based models only create the necessary legal, organizational, economic and other conditions for international cooperation and joint marine scientific research. Collaborative models are created directly for international scientific research. There is no strict border between them, but while the former are mainly focused on creating the necessary environment and conditions for simplifying and strengthening international scientific and technical cooperation, the latter mainly adapt the developed mechanisms of interaction to the needs of a particular project.As ecosystem-type models, the UNESCO IOC and SСOR make the most visible contribution to the formation of regulatory and organizational conditions for the implementation of international projects in the field of ocean research and their financing. They involve a significant number of bodies and programs of international intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, specialized national scientific institutions, related structures and individual scientists. Collaborative institutional models, such as the European research infrastructure consortium "The European Marine Biological Resource Centre (EMBRC)" and GRID-Arendal, carry out international research projects and act as a unifying platform for various research institutions and scientists, based largely on the organizational, financial and structural basis developed by ecosystem models.

INTRODUCTIONDuring a NIVA (Norwegian Institute for Water Research) environmental monitoring cruise along the Norwegian Skagerrak coast, a 16 mm long specimen of the foraminifer Pelosina arborescens Pearcey, 1914, was found in light brown, bioturbated, soft muddy sediment collected with a Gemini corer on 29 May 2008, in 350 m water depth SE of Arendal, Norway (58° 24.177′ N, 9° 01.648′ E). In an effort to pull the individual out of the sediment with forceps, it was accidentally cut into two separate parts (the ‘root’ and the dendritic part). The two pieces were isolated in a 180 ml, 72 mm diameter, plastic container with about 1 cm of sea water and stored in a fridge at near-ambient temperature (about 7°C). On return to the lab four days later (2 June), the two test-pieces had rejoined in their original position and were photographed using a Nikon Coolpix 990 digital camera attached to a Nikon SMZ1000 binocular microscope. The mended fracture (where the two pieces had rejoined) was clearly visible (Fig. 1). The individual was kept in a fridge at 9–10°C and, two days later (4 June), it was still in one piece, even when the water in the container was carefully swirled. The plan was to cut the individual one more time (this time deliberately) to see if the process of rejoining the two pieces would be repeated. Abstract The seabed in the ports needs to be regularly cleaned from the marine sediments for safe navigation. Sediments contaminated by tributyltin (TBT) are environmentally harmful and require treatment before recycling. Treatment methods include leaching, stabilisation and solidification to remove toxic chemicals from the sediments and improve their strength for reuse in the construction works. This study evaluated the effects of adding three different binder components (cement, cement kiln dust (CKD) and slag) to treat sediment samples collected in the port of Gothenburg. The goal of this study is to assess the leaching of TBT from the dredged marine sediments contaminated by TBT. The various methods employed for the treatment of sediments include the application of varied ratios of binders. The project has been performed by the Swedish Geotechnical Institute (SGI) on behalf of the Cementa (HeidelbergCement Group) and Cowi Consulting Group, within the framework of the Arendal project. An experiment has been designed to evaluate the effects of adding CKD while reducing cement and slag for sediment treatment. Methods that have been adopted include laboratory processing of samples for leaching using different binder combinations, followed by statistical data processing and graphical plotting. The results of the experiment on leaching of TBT for all samples are tested with a varied ratio of cement, slag, CKD and water. Specimens with added binders ‘cement/CKD’ have demonstrated higher leaching compared to the ratio ‘cement/slag/CKD’ and ‘cement/slag’. The ‘CKD/slag’ ratio has presented the best results followed by the ‘cement/slag/CKD’, and can be used as an effective method of s/s treatment of the sediments. The results have shown that the replacement of cement and slag by CKD is effective at TBT leaching for the treatment of toxic marine sediments contaminated by TBT.

Background. Heart rhythm disorders, especially atrial fibrillation (AF), are increasing global health challenges. Conventional diagnostic tools for assessment of rhythm disorders suffer from limited availability, limited test duration time, and usability challenges. There is also a need for out-of-hospital investigation of arrhythmias. Therefore, the Norwegian ECG247 Smart Heart Sensor has been developed to simplify the assessment of heart rhythm disorders. The current study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy and usability of the ECG247 Smart Heart Sensor compared to conventional Holter monitors. Methods. Parallel tests with ECG247 Smart Heart Sensor and a Holter monitor were performed in 151 consecutive patients referred for out-of-hospital long-term ECG recording at Sorlandet Hospital Arendal, Norway. All ECG data were automatically analysed by both systems and evaluated by hospital physicians. Participants were asked to complete a questionnaire scoring usability parameters after the test. Results. A total of 150 patients (62% men, age 54 (±17) years) completed the study. The ECG quality from both monitors was considered satisfactory for rhythm analysis in all patients. AF was identified in 9 (6%) patients during the period with parallel tests. The diagnostic accuracy for automatic AF detection was 95% (95% CI 91–98) for the ECG247 Smart Heart Sensor and 81% (95% CI 74–87) for the Holter system. The proportion of false-positive AF was 4% in tests analysed by the ECG247 algorithm and 16% in tests analysed by the Holter algorithm. Other arrhythmias were absent/rare. The system usability score was significantly better for ECG247 Smart Heart Sensor compared to traditional Holter technology (score 87.4 vs. 67.5, p < 0.001 ). Conclusions. The ECG247 Smart Heart Sensor showed at least comparable diagnostic accuracy for AF and improved usability compared to conventional Holter technology. During a violent storm the Danish-Norwegian frigate Fredensborg was wrecked on 1 December 1768, at Tromøy, an island outside Arendal in southern Norway. The long journey in the triangular route was nearly completed when the crew of 29 men, three passengers, and two slaves managed to save their lives under very dramatic conditions. The Captain, Johan Frantzen Ferents, and the Supercargo, Christian Hoffman, saved the ship's logbook and other journals. These, together with other documents which are in the national archives in Denmark and Norway, make it possible for us to follow the course of the frigate from day to day, both during the journey and after the wreck.The Fredensborg was built in 1752-53 by the Danish West India-Guinea Company in Copenhagen. On its first journey in the triangular trade, and during five subsequent journeys to the West Indies, it sailed under the name of Cron Prins Christian. In 1765, when the Guinea Company replaced the West India-Guinea Company, taking over the forts on the Gold Coast and all trading rights and ships, the name was changed to Fredensborg, after the Danish-Norwegian fort at Ningo. At that time Denmark-Norway owned the islands of St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix in the West Indies and their need for slaves was growing.They weighed anchor in Copenhagen on 24 June 1767 with 40 men on board, and anchored in the road at their main fort Christiansborg on the Gold Coast 100 days later, on 1 October 1767. Because of an inadequate supply of slaves, the Fredensborg remained in the road for 205 days. This had a very adverse effect on the health of the crew, with 11 deaths, including that of the Captain, Espen Kiønig. One of the deceased had drowned.

En Costa Rica, en la década de 1970, se desplazó de forma involuntaria a 2500 personas de las comunidades de Tronadora, Arenal y otros poblados desconcentrados en el campo para construir el megaproyecto Hidroeléctrico Arenal. Al presentar mayor población, Arenal fue de interés para la investigación, cuyos resultados se exponen en este artículo. Se indagó sobre la restitución agroforestal, recurriendo a fuentes secundarias, y se aplicaron entrevistas a conocedores del caso. El análisis fue cualitativo, con un alcance exploratorio y descriptivo. Un 94 % de la población de Arenal optó por el reasentamiento involuntario. El 100 % de las familias reasentadas (325) contó con espacio para replicar el huerto casero. Se les brindó árboles para usos diversos y, con el tiempo, la agroforestería recuperó su funcionalidad y fue engalanando el paisaje.

Abstract:
AbstractAncient Costa Ricans in the Arenal area exhibited extraordinary persistence in landscape use and social memory, in spite of repeated catastrophes caused by explosive volcanic eruptions. The Cañales village on the south shore of Lake Arenal was struck by two large explosive eruptions during the Arenal phase (500 b.c.–a.d. 600). Following ecological recovery, the village was reoccupied after each of these eruptions. I argue that the people who reoccupied the village were direct descendants of pre-disaster villagers due to the fact that they reinstated use of the same path to the village cemetery. While previous interpretations emphasized ecological reasons for village reoccupation, I suggest that a dominating reason for reoccupation was to re-establish contact with the spirits of deceased ancestors in the cemetery. The living and the spirits of the deceased constituted the functioning community. The refugees re-established processional access to their cemetery as soon as possible, perhaps even before the village was reoccupied. Archaeologists rarely discover evidence of ancient pilgrimages. However, the combination of remote sensing and detailed stratigraphic analyses allow them to be detected in the Arenal area. Villagers created and perpetuated social memory by regular linear ritual processions along precisely the same path, in spite of challenging topography and occasional regional disasters obscuring the path. This recognition has implications for the arguments of sedentism versus residential mobility during the Arenal phase.

AbstractIntroductionChronic musculoskeletal pain represents a significant health problem among adults in Norway. The prevalence of chronic pain can be up to 50% in both genders. However, the prevalence of chronic widespread pain is significantly higher in females than in males. Chronic widespread pain is seen as the end of a continuum of pain. There is rather sparse knowledge about the incidence of pain in initially pain free individuals and the course of self-reported pain over time. Moreover, little is known about risk factors for incidence of chronic pain or prognostic factors for the course of self-reported pain. We believe that such knowledge may contribute to develop strategies for treatment at an early stadium of the pain condition and thereby reduce the prevalence of chronic pain included chronic widespread pain.Aims of the studyThe aims of this study were threefold: (1) to calculate the incidence of self-reported musculoskeletal pain in a female cohort, (2) to describe the course of pain and (3) to investigate whether or not health complaints and sleep problems are predictive factors for onset of pain or prognostic factors for the course of pain.MethodsThis is a prospective population-based study of all women between 20 and 50 years who were registered in Arendal, Norway, in 1989 (N = 2498 individuals). A questionnaire about chronic pain (pain >3 months duration in muscles, joints, back or the whole body), modulating factors for pain, sleep problems and seven non-specific health complaints was mailed to all traceable women, in 1990 (N =2498), 1995 (n = 2435) and 2007 (n = 2261). Of these, 1338 responded on all three occasions. Outcome measures were presence and extent of chronic pain.ResultsThe prevalence of chronic pain was 57% in 1990 and 61% in 2007. From 1990 to 2007, 53% of the subjects changed pain category. The incidence of chronic pain in initially pain free individuals during follow-up was 44%, whereas the recovery rate was 25%. Impaired sleep quality predicted onset of chronic pain. There was a linear association between the number of health complaints and the incidence of chronic pain in initially pain free individuals. Equivalent results were found for persistence of pain and worsening of pain.ConclusionThe prevalence of chronic pain was rather stable throughout the follow-up period, but the prevalence of chronic widespread pain increased. Individual changes in pain extent occurred frequently. The presence of sleep disturbances and number of health complaints predicted onset, persistence and worsening of pain.ImplicationsSleep problems must be thoroughly addressed as a possible risk factor for onset or worsening of pain. Elimination of sleep problems in an early phase is an interesting approach in treating chronic pain. More research is needed to illuminate the possible pathogenetic relations between pain, non-specific health complaints, sleep problems and also depression.

Este artículo pasa revista a algunas de las influencias más visibles que la impronta krausista dejó en la obra jurídica, educativa y penitenciaria de Arenal, y expone en qué sentido el pensamiento arenaliano y la filosofía del krausismo son como el anverso y el reverso de un mismo fenómeno regeneracionista porque, por un lado, los krausistas apreciaron en Arenal a la gran intelectual que podía llevar a buen puerto la obra espiritual que los krausistas habían emprendido a finales del siglo XIX y que participaba del elemento modernizador, solidarista y educador que podía alimentar intelectualmente a una España nueva. Y Arenal, por su parte, reconoció en krausistas como Giner a la persona capaz de convertir la metafísica krausista en un proyecto ilustrado de escuela y de reforma social cuyo fin era la formación integral de la persona en una actitud ética ante la vida como la perseguida por ella.

David Arendale, at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, served as an associate professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction within the College of Education and Human Development and manager for the Educational Opportunity Association Best Practices Clearinghouse. Arendale formerly served at the University of Missouri-Kansas City in several capacities, including senior research fellow for the Office of the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, national project director of Supplemental Instruction, and interim director for the Center for Academic Development. Since the mid-1980s, he has been an active member of both the College Reading and Learning Association and the National Association for Developmental Education (NADE; renamed as the National Organization for Student Success). He served as president of NADE from 1996 to 1997. In 2000, Arendale was recognized by the Council for Learning Assistance and Developmental Education Associations (CLADEA) for induction as a Founding Fellow of the profession. Arendale is devoting more time to the use of social media such as websites, YouTube channels, podcasting, and Twitter (renamed as X) to communicate in addition to publishing in print and online open-access journals. The use of the Internet, publications, presentations, and workshops communicate the best practices that others have already created. Part of this priority is reflected in his leadership of the Educational Opportunity Association National Best Practices Clearinghouse, which identifies, validates, and disseminates best practices developed by TRIO programs to increase the success of students who are low-income, first-generation college, and historically underrepresented.

Oleshkivski Sands is one of the most peculiar regions of psammomorphic land- scapes in Europe and in particular the ancient delta region of the Left Bank of the Lower Dnipro. The territory of the sands consists of seven hilly sand massifs and six inter-arenial flat-level geocomplexes. The relief and peculiarities of the formation of this territory are still insufficiently studied, the relief of the intra-arenial landscapes is almost completely unexplored. The objectives of this study were sys- tematics and typology of the relief forms with approaches to elucidating the factors and mechanism of formation of geomorphological formations of Oleshkivski Sands. The methods of research of the relief of the Oleshkivski Sands were based on existing experience in identification, mapping, classification, analysis of sandy landforms, deciphering their portrayal on satellite images, as well as on many years of field research by the author. The generalized and systematized analysis of the relief, illustrated with maps, tables and photo- graphic materials, allowed us to form the systematics of the microforms of the relief and the typology of the mesorelief of the Olesh- kivski Sands. The results of such studies have revealled the morphological and genetic diversity of individual landforms within the arenas and inter-arenial geocomplexes, and a total of seven arenas of the Oleshkivski Sands, and respectively the complicated history of the formation of the region. Of the arenial geocomplexes, the hilly massifs and intra-arenial depressions were considered separately. Among the hilly massifs, the dominant were found to be hilly and undulated chaotically-configured structures, at some places with the distribution of parabolic dunes and dune ridges, and also the subordinate spread of the mound massifs. The morphological and genetic diversity of inter-arenial depressions was determined, which can be considered as diagnostic objects in the formation of the Oleshkivski Sands. The analysis of the relief of the territory of the Oleshkivski Sands revealed that different factors were in operation at different time stages of its formation – fluvial (fluvioglacial), aeolian, suffusion-subsidence, thalassogenic, anthropogenic. Аt the present stage the dominant are aeolian and anthropogenic factors. Special attention was paid to parallel hilly ridges of the Kinburnska and Kelegeiska arenas, considered in the context of the diluvial (catafluvial) paradigm as a manifestation of giant ripples. The discreetly formed parallel ridges and extended hollows of the Kinburn Peninsula are presented in the context of flood-freshet events in the history of the function- ing of the Dnipro and the Southern Bug, in places where water masses flow through watershed geocomplexes.

Concepción Arenal escribió en 1897, en su libro El Pauperismo un capítulo dedicado íntegramente a “los niños”, y así se titulaba. El XIX era el capítulo, y también el siglo donde ella percibe que se empiezan a reconocer los derechos de la infancia.Precisamente porque se hacen más evidentes los malos tratos que en diversos ámbitos (la casa, la escuela, la calle, el trabajo, y las instituciones) se cometen contra los niños en España. Arenal propone diversas medidas para solucionar sus problemas, estudiando lo que se hacía en otros países. En este artículo se toma la época de Concepción Arenal como punto de partida para así ver la trayectoria que ha seguido ese reconocimiento inicial de los derechos de niños y niñas, con alguna de sus aplicaciones en la práctica, hasta el momento presente. Aquí avanzamos que se ha pasado por una fase inicial de preocupación, continuando por la protección y pretendiendo alcanzar la promoción con la ayuda de la participación de los propios niños y niñas.

Recientemente, se ha identificado a Concepción Arenal como la primera trabajadora social del Trabajo Social en España, así como su ética de la compasión (Autor/a, 2020a, 2020b). Este trabajo tiene por objetivo explicar las similitudes y diferencias de esta ethica misericordis con la ethica cordis de Adela Cortina. Por ello, en una primera parte, describiremos brevemente la aportación de Concepción Arenal, en la segunda parte, la de Adela Cortina y, en la tercera parte, compararemos las diferencias y las similitudes de ambas contribuciones. Se ha utilizado una metodología histórico-sistemática. La novedad de esta aportación radica en que es la primera vez que se comparan ambas propuestas éticas. Se concluye que la ethica cordis de Adela Cortina amplía el alcance y actualiza la ethica misericordis de Concepción Arenal, siendo por ello la virtud de la cordura uno de los elementos que debería integrarse en la ética del Trabajo Social en España.

En lo referente a la “cuestión social” su obra y su reflexión sobre la atención a los más desfavorecidos no solo supuso un antes y un después, si no que muchas de sus reflexiones tienen indudable conexión con el Trabajo Social y su praxis en nuestros días.Este artículo es una reflexión sobre la participación del usuario en la toma de decisiones que los Trabajadores Sociales hacemos en nuestras intervenciones profesionales, desde nuestro saber experto, conectándolo con la visión expuesta por Concepción Arenal en varias de sus obras, especialmente en el manual El Visitador del Pobre. Desde su visión humanista, Concepción Arenal pedía ver a los pobres de la época como víctimas, no como culpables, y rechazaba la arrogancia propia de los acomodados de la época que se acercaban a ayudar. Hoy los Trabajadores Sociales, profesionales formados, podemos caer en esa misma arrogancia si desde nuestro saber experto desdeñamos la participación de los usuarios, y nos consideramos como los poseedores de las únicas verdades y pautas válidas para intervenir.

We describe the new species Norops arenal sp. nov. from Parque Nacional Volcán Arenal, north-central Costa Rica. In external morphology and genetic similarity of the 16S DNA barcode, Norops arenal is most similar to N. altae, N. fortunensis, N. fuscoauratus, N. gruuo, N. kemptoni, N. monteverde, N. pseudokemptoni, and N. tenorioensis. In morphology it shares with these species the following characteristics: (1) short hind limbs; (2) a single elongate prenasal scale; (3) tiny, smooth, often juxtaposed body scales; and (4) a slender habitus, often delicate. Norops arenal differs from these species, among several scalation details, by having a blackish central area in the male dewlap in life and in preservative (vs. no suffusion of black pigment on male dewlap in the other species), and a small red female dewlap in life (vs. dirty white, cream colored, or orange); extremely short hind legs with the tip of fourth toe of the adpressed hind leg reaching only to level of shoulder (vs. usually at least to level of ear in the other species); a short tail with a tail length/SVL ratio of 1.53 in single specimen with complete tail (vs. this ratio >1.6 in the other species); and a tiny size with 41.5 mm in single known adult male and 38.5 mm in single known adult female (vs. SVL of adults usually >42.0 mm). It further differs from N. altae, N. fuscoauratus, N. gruuo, N. pseudokemptoni, and N. tenorioensis by having a unilobed hemipenis (vs. bilobed in these five species).

Objetivo: Determinar la presencia de Staphylococcus aureus en los quesos que se expenden en el mercado El Arenal Cuenca – Ecuador en el periodo Marzo del 2023. Metodología: El universo está conformado por los comerciantes del Mercado el Arenal de la ciudad de Cuenca –Ecuador donde proceden las 32 muestras de los 8 puestos que han sido designados y en los cuales se comercializa queso elaborado de manera artesanal. Se realizará la determinación de Staphylococcus aureus mediante placas Compact Dry X-SA. Resultados: Determinación de Staphylococcus aureus en muestras de quesos mediante placas Compact Dry X-SA, para verificar si está dentro de los parámetros establecidos de acuerdo con la norma NTE INEN 1528:2012. For many years, it has been a common opinion among medical doctors that chronic pain may indeed reduce a person’s quality of life, but not affect life expectancy. However, over the previous two decades, reports about mortality and cause of death in individuals with chronic pain have been published. So far, several studies conclude that there is an increased mortality in patients with chronic pain, but it is not clear what causes this. Increased occurrences of cardio-vascular death or cancer death have been reported in some studies, but not verified in other studies.Aims of the studyThe aims of this study were to estimate the mortality rate in females with different extent of pain, to identify potential risk factors for death and to investigate if the causes of death differ according to prior reported pain.MethodsThis is a prospective population-based study of all women between 20 and 50 years registered in Arendal, Norway, in 1989 (N = 2498 individuals). At follow-up in 2007, 2261 living females were retraced, 89 had died.All subjects received a questionnaire containing questions about chronic pain (pain ≥ 3 months duration in muscles, joints, back or the whole body) as well as 13 sub-questions about pain-modulating factors, non-specific health complaints and sleep problems, by mail in 1990, 1995 and 2007. Only subjects who answered the questionnaire in 1990 were included in the analyses. Of the deceased, 71 had answered the questionnaire in 1990.A multivariate model for cox regression analysis was used in order to clarify if chronic pain, sleep problems, feeling anxious, frightened or nervous and number of unspecific health were risk factors for death.The causes of death of 87 of the deceased individuals were obtained by linking the ID-number with the Norwegian Cause of Death Registry.ResultsThe ratio of deceased responders was 2% (14/870) among those with no pain versus 5% (57/1168) among those with chronic pain at baseline. When separating into chronic regional pain and chronic widespread pain, the mortality rate was respectively 4% and 8% in the different groups. Age adjusted hazard ratio for mortality rate in individuals with initially chronic pain was [HR 2.5 (CI 1.4–4.5)] compared to pain free individuals. In the multivariate analysis, having chronic pain [HR 2.1 (1.1–4.2)] and feeling anxious, frightened or nervous [HR 3.2 (1.8–5.6)] were associated with increased risk of death. There was no difference in death from cardiovascular disease or malignancies between the groups of pain free individuals vs. the group of individuals with chronic pain.ConclusionThe mortality rate was significantly higher for individuals with chronic pain compared to pain free individuals, adjusted for age. In addition, feeling anxious, frightened or nervous were risk factors for death. There was an increase in all-cause mortality.

Health Social Work emerged at the beginning of the 20th century with Richard Cabot and Ida Cannon at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to explain succinctly, firstly, the contributions of Richard Cabot and Ida Cannon, secondly, those of Nicasio Landa and Concepción Arenal, and finally, to show the similarities and differences found between the USA and Spain in the process of the emergence of proto-Health Social Work. A historical-systematic methodology has been used. The novelty of this contribution lies in the fact that it is the first time that Concepción Arenal has been considered as the first proto-health social worker in the history of Social Work in Spain. El trabajo social sanitario surge a comienzos del siglo XX de la mano de Richard Cabot y de Ida Cannon en el Hospital General de Massachusetts. Por ello, el objetivo de este trabajo consiste en explicar de forma sucinta, primeramente, las contribuciones de Richard Cabot y de Ida Cannon y, seguidamente, las de Nicasio Landa y Concepción Arenal para, finalmente, mostrar las similitudes y diferencias halladas entre EE. UU. y España en el proceso de surgimiento del proto-trabajo social[1] sanitario. Se ha utilizado una metodología histórico-sistemática. La novedad de esta aportación radica en que es la primera vez que se considera a Concepción Arenal como la primera proto-trabajadora social sanitaria de la historia del trabajo social en España. Microfungi associated with palm are a significant fungal group with a unique ecological niche and a broad distribution in tropical regions. Even though many fungal species have been reported from palm hosts, studies on fungi from Arenga tremula are considerably few. In this study, we isolated a saprobic Botryosphaeriaceae species on A. tremula, collected from Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China. Morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS), small subunit nuclear rRNA gene (SSU),part of the large subunit nuclear rRNA gene (LSU) and translation elongation factor 1−alpha gene (tef 1-α). Based on phylogenetic results and morphology we introduced Neodeightonia arengae sp. nov., with species description and illustrations. In addition, we provide a comparison of morphological characters of currently accepted Neodeightonia species. This is the first report of a Neodeightonia species associated with Arenga tremula and so represents an additional contribution to the knowledge of fungi associated with palm trees.

La figura de Concepción Arenal, cuando se la estudia, aparece casi siempre vinculada alDerecho Penal, a las prisiones, al preso. Fue como penalista, como reformadora de prisiones y comoestudiosa de la psicología del preso y de su entorno social como su fama se consolidó, traspasónuestras fronteras y alcanzó la cima, pero su personalidad era tan polifacética que no dejó tema sinanalizar, ni problema social sin abordar. Puede decirse que, en el siglo XIX, Concepción Arenal, consu inteligencia y con su pluma, iluminó los más oscuros rincones donde se escondían la injusticia, lapobreza, la violencia, la tiranía, la discriminación, los privilegios de clase y de género, denunciandomuy especialmente la inhumana situación de los presos.

In der Rezeptionsgeschichte der Shoah nimmt Hannah Arendts »Eichmann in Jerusalem« eine einzigartige Stellung ein. Keiner Studie über die Shoah wurde auch nur annähernd eine vergleichbare Beachtung zu Teil. Nicht einmal die Verkaufszahlen von Daniel Goldhagens »Hitlers willige Vollstrecker« erreichen Arendts »Bericht von der Banalität des Bösen.« Dies mag sich zum großen Teil aus dem Aufschrei erklären, der bei Erscheinen ihres Prozessberichts gewaltig war. »Die Stadt [New York; C.V.]«, so William Shawn, damaliger Chefredakteur des »New Yorker«, »scheint kaum noch über etwas anderes zu reden.« Ganz abgesehen von den erdbebenartigen Reaktionen der jüdischen Organisationen und Gemeinden weltweit und der Attacke der westlichen Öffentlichkeit, zerbrachen nach Publikation des Eichmann-Buchs Hannah Arendts jahrelange Freundschaften u. a. mit Hans Jonas, Robert Weltsch und Kurt Blumenfeld. Entsprechend bezeichnete Anson Rabinbach die Kontroverse um Arendts Prozessbericht als den »bitterste[n] öffentliche[n] Disput unter Intellektuellen und Wissenschaftlern, der jemals über den Holocaust geführt« worden war. Wenngleich die Gründe hierfür äußerst zahlreich waren – sie kreisen um Arendts spezifische Beschreibung des Gerichtsverfahrens, ihre oftmals unklare Kritik an der Anklageschrift, ihre Polemiken gegen das Auftreten des Staatsanwalts Hausner, Arendts Tonfall, die vermeintliche »Verleumdung« des angesehenen Rabbiners Dr. Leo Baeck, ihre scharfe Anklage der Judenräte –, so entfachte sich der Sturm der Empörung in besonderem Maße an Arendts Charakterisierung des Angeklagten. Denn mit dem Untertitel des Buches »Ein Bericht von der Banalität des Bösen« positionierte sie sich explizit gegen die Verlautbarungen der Anklage und den unter nordamerikanischen Intellektuellen weit verbreiteten Standpunkt, bei Eichmann habe man es mit einem pathologischen Fall, einem ideologisch durch und durch überzeugten Mörder, einem Monster zu tun. Im Gegenteil: Die Prädisposition des modernen Menschen für den verwalteten Massenmord entspringt, so ihre herausfordernde und streitbare Behauptung, trivialen Quellen. Wie ist das zu verstehen?

En el contexto del monográfico sobre el pensamiento de Concepción Arenal, este artículo analiza la aplicación y posible eficacia de las penas y medidas alternativas a la prisión. El análisis se centra en la pena de trabajos en beneficio a la comunidad y en la sustitución o suspensión de la ejecución de la condena. A partir de los datos que proporcionan las estadísticas de la Administración Penitenciaria, se ha revisado el perfil de los condenados y la aplicación de estas medidas en los últimos años. Se constata un enorme crecimiento de los trabajos en beneficio a la comunidad y se discuten las consecuencias que ha provocado esta situación. Asimismo, se valoran los logros y las contradicciones del actual sistema proponiendo puentes y relaciones con las reformas propuestas en el S. XIX por Concepción Arenal.

Recent investigations of a Preclassic E Group at Las Ruinas de Arenal have shed light on transformations in ritual practices from the Middle Preclassic to the Late Preclassic period. Our excavations at the site to date have uncovered a series of offerings and three burials on centerline of the E Group architectural assemblage suggesting a complex history of ritual practice at the heart of the Arenal community. The Preclassic burials are of particular importance as they illustrate a pattern of reentry and bone retrieval, thus, indicating early ancestor veneration practices by at least the Middle Preclassic. In this paper, we discuss the burial data and highlight patterns that are suggestive of venerative practices. By tracing the ritual history at this sacred location, we gain a better understanding of major transformations that occurred in Maya society.

<p>El trabajo describe brevemente los objetivos y logros de la Comisión de Implementación y Desarrollo de las Cuencas Arenal y Tempisque (Cidecat), una asamblea representada por instituciones públicas y organizaciones no gubernamentales que tienen incidencia en la gestión y manejo del recurso hídrico en la gran cuenca Arenal-Tempisque. Desde su creación, Cidecat ha coordinado esfuerzos tendientes al adecuado manejo del recurso natural en la región y actualmente promueve varios proyectos ambientales de impacto en colaboración con actores locales. Entre sus logros más relevantes en los últimos años están la coordinación de la campaña geológica para determinar vulnerabilidad de acuíferos, el monitoreo de calidad de aguas en la cuenca alta y media del río Tempisque y el rescate de la quebrada La Cabra, así como la coordinación interinstitucional permanente en la región.</p>

BackgroundAxial spondyloarthritis is a chronic inflammatory joint disease, which mainly attacks the pelvis, back, neck and thorax, but peripheral joints can also be affected. This patient group is affected to a very varying degree and the disease varies throughout the course of the disease. Some have mild symptoms and may be without ailments for long periods of time. Others have major ailments and may experience increasing stiffness in the back. The average age at the onset of symptoms of AS is 26 years.ObjectivesThe aim of this campaign is to focus on life with a chronic illness. How to mentally master your illness and accept it, but also how to be active with the disease. The campaign aims to break down prejudices and discrimination that chronic sufferers are faced with in society, for example that they are weaker or lazier than others. These prejudices help to make the disease a strain mentally as well. Many patients struggle to accept that they have contracted a chronic illness, a disease that stays with you for life.MethodsGiving this campaign a face, we used a world-renowned photographer and social debates Morten Krogvold to take pictures of Felix Baldauf, world champion in wrestling, living with axial spondyloarthritis. Films were made of Felix’s story, about the road to a diagnosis and about the afterlife diagnosis. In the films, Felix honestly tell how tough and difficult this road has been for him, but at the same time he talks about how life has changed now that he has been diagnosed and properly treated. His goal is now a gold medal in wrestling at the 2024 Olympics, even though he’s living with axial spondyloarthritis, which shows that it is possible to live a good life with the disease and have an active physical life. In order to get as much attention as possible about the campaign, it was launched at political week in Arendal. The films and photos are being shared in social media, and we have published digital booklet with artistic photos. The main film has so far reached 3200 people. We had an event at Litteraturhuset in Oslo together with a rheumatologist and a physiotherapist where we talked about being able to live a good life with the disease. We also recorded a podcast about the campaign.ResultsBy using famous people the campaign has gained a familiar face and at the same time received a lot of attention. Felix tells about a great mental strain not knowing what was wrong with him, but it is fantastic to see that it is possible to live well with the disease when getting treatment.ConclusionThe campaign gives hope and inspiration to patients that it is possible to live well with the disease. It shows that you can be very physically active, but at the same time show that there are both ups and downs with the disease.
