Abstract:
Eight species of hemoparasites (Plasmodium relictum, Plasmodium elongatum, Plasmodium sp.indet., Haemoproteus plataleae, Haemoproteus herodiadis, Haemoproteus sp.indet., Leucocytozoon ardeae, and Trypanosoma avium) were found in thin blood films from 402 wading birds in Florida. Three of 11 ciconiiform species were infected, including the tricolored heron (Egretta tricolor), white ibis (Eudocimus albus), and two subspecies of Ardea herodias, the great blue heron (Ardea herodias herodias) and great white heron (Ardea herodias occidentalis). Representatives of each genus of hemoparasite except Leucocytozoon were recorded in nestlings, indicating that transmission occurred in Florida. Infections by L. ardeae were more common in northern Florida than in southern Florida. Species of Plasmodium and Haemoproteus were more commonly transmitted to nestling great blue herons in freshwater colony sites than in salt-water colony sites.

In the present study, we examined the role of different habitat components and their relationship with microhabitat use by three species of egret: Cocoi heron (Ardea cocoi), Great egret (Ardea alba), and Cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis), in wetlands of southern Brazil. Ardea alba and A. cocoi were not habitat-specific (e.g. vegetation cover and flooding level). Conversely, B. ibis was associated with drier microhabitats. Relative air humidity and air temperature were the main variables which correlated with the occurrence of these species and supported the plasticity of B. ibis and its predominance in drier habitats.

Aerial surveys between 1981 and 1984 were used to identify monthly trends in the abundance of Pacific herons (Ardea pacifica), pied herons (Ardea picata), cattle egrets (Ardeola ibis), great egrets (Egretta alba), little egrets (Egretta garzetta), intermediate egrets (Egretta intermedia), glossy ibis (Plegadis falcinellus), sacred ibis (Threskiornis aethiopica), straw-necked ibis (Threskiornis spinicollis) and royal spoonbills (Platalea regia) on five floodplains of the Alligator Rivers region, 250 km east of Darwin in the monsoonal Northern Territory. Ground surveys were conducted during the same period on one of the floodplains, the Magela. The aerial surveys indicated that the Magela floodplain was inhabited by few of these birds during the wet season (November-March), but that numbers then increased substantially in the dry season. The Nourlangie floodplain and Boggy Plain (a large backswamp of the South Alligator floodplain) showed similar patterns, but the numbers of birds tended to be lower. Birds were generally uncommon on the shallower East Alligator and Cooper floodplains, except for egrets in the wet season. Ground surveys suggested that the birds sought out the persistent swamps that characterise the Magela foodplain in the dry season. Ground surveys also indicated that aerial surveys underestimated densities. On the basis of correction factors calculated from ground surveys, peak numbers on the five floodplains were roughly estimated to be about 4000 pacific herons, 50 000 pied herons, 300 000 egrets (primarily intermediate egrets), 60 000 glossy ibis, 16 000 sacred ibis, 80 000 straw-necked ibis and 35 000 royal spoonbills. Great-billed herons (Ardea sumatrana), white-faced herons (Ardea novaehollandiae), striated herons (Butorides striata), rufous night herons (Nycticorax caledonicus), black bitterns (Dupetor flavicollis) and yellow-billed spoonbills (Platalea flavipes) were recorded sporadically in low numbers. The Alligator Rivers region acted as a dry-season refuge for herons, egrets, ibises and spoonbills because of the unusually persistent fresh waters of the Magela and Nourlangie floodplains and some of the backswamps of the South Alligator, such as Boggy Plain.

Abstract:
Los ecosistemas acuáticos son susceptibles de la contaminación, siendo los metales tóxicos compuestos que generan impactos deletéreos en los organismos. La mayoría de estos, se bioacumulan en la cadena trófica y cuantificar su concentración en los tejidos de las aves acuáticas puede determinar su impacto ambiental. Por lo tanto, el objetivo de este estudio es determinar la concentración de mercurio, plomo, arsénico o cadmio en las plumas de la garza grande (Ardea alba), la corocora (Eudocimus ruber) y el ibis de cara roja (Phimosus infuscatus), especies que habitan cerca al río Ocoa de Villavicencio-Meta, Colombia. Para este fin se realizará un recorrido preliminar identificando puntos claves de nidales de la corocora (Eudocimus ruber), el ibis de cara roja (Phimosus infuscatus) y la garza grande (Ardea alba). Posteriormente, se seleccionarán seis diferentes lugares de recolección de las plumas, donde de cada especie se colectarán y clasificarán las plumas (n = 3 por punto) y se almacenarán en bolsas herméticas para llevar al laboratorio, donde se realizará una preparación para proceder al envío a un laboratorio de referencia, donde se determinarán los metales tóxicos a través de espectrometría de absorción atómica (AA). Los resultados serán analizados a través de una ANOVA de dos vías y un test de Tukey (p<0,05). Al finalizar este estudio se espera determinar la concentración de al menos un metal tóxico en las plumas de las garzas Corocora, Garza Grande y el Ibis de Cara Roja, demostrando su potencial como biomarcadores confiables no invasivos para el estudio de ecotoxicología en la región, permitiendo concientizar a la población del sector sobre la importancia de la conservación del medio ambiente y el riesgo potencial de los metales tóxicos sobre la salud animal y ambiental.

Heron colonies are dynamic components of wetlands. Therefore, their systematic monitoring is important for the management of both birds and wetlands. During the period 1988–2018, we counted breeding pairs of seven colonial breeding heron species at 65 colonies across 37 wetlands in Greece. We considered as annual variables of a population: (a) years since 1988, (b) Natura 2000 network inclusion, (c) protected area management authority overseeing, (d) wetland type (new or restored), and (e) new colonies (established after 2003). The Cattle Egret Bubulcus ibis and the Squacco Heron Ardeola ralloides had a positive breeding population trend. The Black-crowned Night Heron Nycticorax nycticorax, Little Egret Egretta garzetta, and Grey Heron Ardea cinerea had a negative trend, while the Purple Heron Ardea purpurea population was stable. The Great White Egret Ardea alba bred sporadically at only a few sites which precluded the evaluation of its population trend. The informative population variables differed among species, even of those at the same colony, which suggests trends are also affected by conditions at wintering grounds. The study highlights the need for the systematic monitoring of heron colonies and the protection of foraging/breeding areas in order to reverse the observed negative population trends.

In the colonies, there was reported a number of ten aquatic nesting species, with specific differences for each colony separately. The 10 species are: Phalacrocorax carbo (Great Cormorant), Phalacrocorax pygmaeus (Pygmy Cormorant), Nycticorax nycticorax (Night Heron), Ardeola ralloides (Squacco Heron), Egretta garzetta (Little Egret), Egretta alba (Great White Egret), Bubulcus ibis (Cattle Egret), Ardea cinerea (Grey Heron), Plegadis falcinellus (Glossy Ibis) and Platalea leucorodia (Spoonbill). The presence or absence of certain species in a colony is closely related to its ecological requirements, with the structural features of the ecosystems and the climatic conditions.

The diversity of micro-habitats in tropical wetlands allows the coexistence of several species. These sympatric species interact with each other, either directly or indirectly, to optimally use the available resources. They achieve this through niche separation or minimal overlap to avoid competition. India’s wetland ecosystems are home to various sympatric species, such as the Great Egret Ardea alba (GE), Median Egret Ardea intermedia (IE), Little Egret Egretta garzetta (LE) and Cattle Egret Bubulcus ibis (CE). These egret species are closely related, and as a result, have similar niche requirements, which could lead to high intra-specific competition. However, there have been few studies on how these species utilize resources. This study aims to understand the possible mechanisms that enable the coexistence of these species in a tropical wetland. We have examined habitat characteristics, feeding behaviour, timings of seasonal and daily activities, and spacing patterns to evaluate possible models of species coexistence. We discovered that these four sympatric egret species have differences in microhabitat selection, activity patterns, both daily and seasonally, and feeding preferences. The study further indicates that there is a relationship between the niche dimensions, but it is only partially dependent on each other.

Las garzas que se reproducen en colonias presentan requerimientos ecológicos similares e intensifican sus relaciones interespecíficas. Sin embargo, estas especies pueden coexistir al segregarse temporal y espacialmente. Se estimó el número de nidos de ocho especies de garzas (Ardea alba, Egretta thula, E. caerulea, E. tricolor, E. rufescens, Bubulcus ibis, Nycticorax nycticorax y Cochlearius cochlearius) durante la temporada reproductiva marzo a agosto de 2018 en Isla Pájaros, Laguna Mar Muerto, Oaxaca- Chiapas, México. Así mismo, se estimaron las abundancias de las parejas reproductoras, el patrón temporal y espacial de reproducción por especie, y se describió el sitio de anidación. Se contaron nidos en 96 parcelas y se midieron ocho variables ambientales. Se registraron 1018 nidos, donde B. ibis presentó el mayor número de parejas reproductoras (299), seguida por E. tricolor (213) y E. thula (142). Las especies menos abundantes fueron C. cochlearius (35) y E. caerulea (33). La distribución de los nidos en la isla varió espacial y temporalmente entre parcelas al igual que la composición de especies y la abundancia de nidos por parcela (P < 0,001). Se registró una distribución vertical en la construcción de los nidos de al menos tres especies, mientras que las cuatro garcitas de similar tamaño (E. thula, E. caerulea, E. tricolor y B. ibis) anidaron juntas en las partes intermedias. Se registraron agrupaciones entre las especies y características de la vegetación. Los patrones de distribución espacial y temporal de estas especies permiten entender el uso de un recurso común durante la reproducción.

Throughout history, symptoms of nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhoea, bloating, and pain have been described in relation to diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. Gastrointestinal disorders that give rise to these symptoms are broadly characterized as one of two types: structural or functional. Although structural diseases can be easily identified, and even cured by means of medical or surgical intervention, functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) remain a medical enigma. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) constitutes one of the 40 or so conditions under the FGIDs umbrella. It is characterized by abdominal pain and altered bowel habits and has an estimated prevalence of 5%–20% in the Western world. Around 40 years ago, little was known about the mechanism behind visceral pain in IBS. Ritchie’s landmark study was one of the first to begin to elucidate some of the mechanisms involved (and therefore provide some insight into putative treatments) in the difficult area of FGIDs.

In this volume Christina Di Cerbo and Richard Jasnow publish 92 Demotic graffiti, along with several ostraca and mummy bandages, from Theban Tombs 11, 12, Tomb-399-, and environs recorded and studied under the aegis of the Spanish Mission at Dra Abu el-Naga directed by José Galán. These texts from the mid-second century BCE were inscribed on the tomb walls by workers of the Ibis and Falcon cult, who used the New Kingdom tombs as burial places for mummified birds dedicated to the gods Thoth and Horus. This varied corpus of texts includes not only votive formulae and lists of names, but, most unusually, labels for chambers and halls to guide the men depositing the mummies through the labyrinthine catacombs. The cult workers also recorded important burials and memorialized events of special significance, as when a massive conflagration broke out that consumed several mummies and damaged the tomb walls. The Missions conservators recovered many hitherto virtually invisible graffiti. Numerous inscriptions posed daunting epigraphic challenges; the text editors employed computer applications, especially DStretch, in order to enhance the digital images forming the basis for decipherment. In an introductory chapter Galán discusses the work of the Spanish Mission at Dra Abu Naga and recounts the complicated history of this important area of the Theban Necropolis down to the Roman period. The graffiti illustrate how New Kingdom tombs were reused for the sacred animal cult in the Ptolemaic period. Francisco Bosch-Puche and Salima Ikram contribute a detailed chapter analyzing the archaeological context of the graffiti and the material evidence for the animal cult in the site. The volume, a holistic study of this area at the twilight of Pharaonic history, represents a true collaboration between archaeologists and philologists.

Abstract The Purple Heron is a bird adapted to and dependent on a very specific habitat—dense reed beds. Its long toes, short tarsus, thin body and head, and long bill can be seen as adaptations for living in this habitat (Boev 1988a). It feeds by solitarily waiting patiently for prey or by Walking slowly over and through the reeds. It is also a diet specialist and is among the most morphologically specialized of European herons for fish eating (Boev 1989). Together, these characteristics indicate that it has among the narrowest of ecological niches of the typical herons.

As Malaysia attempts to expand access for their minority groups using international branch campuses (IBCs), the IBC emphasis on developing students into tech-savvy, English-speaking, business leaders is leading to divisions based on language and ability that present new accessibility challenges. This chapter draws on the findings from a qualitative study conducted at three IBCs in the greater Kuala Lumpur area of Malaysia to understand how IBCs both facilitate and obstruct access to higher education for Malaysia's diverse population, and to reframe how access is understood in an area of cross-border higher education. This study found that: a) the instructional approach used in the business degrees at Malaysia's IBCs provides a very different pedagogical experience for students compared with the forms of instruction at their secondary schools; b) the new English-only, group-based learning highlights students' ethnic and linguistic differences; and c) students' successful transition to the surrounding business sector depends on their ability to acquire skills offered at the IBC.

A primary objective is the assessment of changes in response to water pollution abatement and other water quality management programs. All major, nonwadeable rivers were intensively sampled using standardized electrofishing methods and a summer–early fall index period. Most rivers were sampled two or three times, before and after implementation of pollution controls at major point source discharges and best management practices for nonpoint sources. A modified and calibrated index of biotic integrity (IBI) was used to demonstrate and evaluate changes at multiple sampling locations in major river segments. An area of degradation value (ADV) and an area of attainment value (AAV) were also calculated from IBI results to demonstrate the magnitude and extent of changes in fish assemblage condition along segments and between sampling years. Positive responses in the IBI and the ADV/AAV were observed 4 to 5 years after implementing improved municipal wastewater treatment. Positive responses were much less apparent in rivers predominantly influenced by complex industrial sources, agricultural nonpoint sources, and extensive hydrologic modifications. The ADV/AAV showed incremental improvements in river fish assemblages, unlike pass/fail IBI thresholds, and tiered IBI biocriteria provided more appropriate benchmarks than chemical, physical, or qualitative biological criteria. The results show the value of standardized and intensive fish assemblage monitoring and the use of tools that reveal the extent and severity of impairments to determine the effectiveness of water pollution control programs.

The ADV/AAV showed incremental improvements in river fish assemblages, unlike pass/fail IBI thresholds, and tiered IBI biocriteria provided more appropriate benchmarks than chemical, physical, or qualitative biological criteria. The results show the value of standardized and intensive fish assemblage monitoring and the use of tools that reveal the extent and severity of impairments to determine the effectiveness of water pollution control programs.

Marketing in medium and small-scale enterprises (SMEs) is altogether very different to marketing as proposed theoretically for large organizations. This chapter is dedicated to the gathered research on the effect and impact of IBTs on the customer relationship management (CRM) activities (i.e., e-CRM) of SMEs in Gurgaon. A cocktail method approach including online in-depth interviews, online questionnaires, and projective techniques was followed. Of 286 respondents, factor analysis was carried out leading to communication with customers and management of customer information being processed as the main area within the e-CRM in SMEs. In order to provide better communication and information management abilities to varying customers, SMEs are following relatively simple IBTs. It is harder to consolidate customer information into decision making than just the communication side of it. In SMEs, e-CRM tries to be adhoc rather than strategic.

<em>Abstract.</em>—Effects of urbanization on geomorphic, habitat, and hydrologic characteristics and fish biotic integrity of 45 streams in the Chicago area were examined by the U.S. Geological Survey from 2000 to 2001. An agricultural to urban land-cover gradient approach was used. Landscape characteristics such as texture of surficial deposits, slope, riparian land cover, and stream network position also were examined to determine if these factors influenced the effects of urbanization. Among geomorphic characteristics, channel enlargement occurred in urban streams with a high percent of watershed clayey surficial deposits. Other geomorphic and habitat characteristics such as stream power, fine substrate, and amount of riffles did not correlate with percent watershed urban land but instead correlated with reach slope. Bank erosion, habitat variability, and two habitat indexes did not correlate with watershed urban land. Below 30% watershed urban land, the unit area discharge for a 2-year flood increased with increasing urban land; however, above 30% urban land, unit area discharges for a 2-year flood were variable, most likely due to variations in stormwater management practices, point-source contributions, and the transport index. Streams with greater than 33% watershed urban land had low base flow, but the effects of urbanization on base flow were offset by point-source contributions. Fish index of biotic integrity (IBI) scores were low in streams with greater than 25% watershed urban land. Fish IBI scores also were low in streams with high percentages of watershed clayey surficial deposits and enlarged channels. The amount of riparian forest/ wetland buffer had no moderating effect on geomorphic/habitat/hydrologic characteristics and fish IBI scores. Variations in the texture and topography of glacial landforms affected reach slope and some habitat characteristics. Longitudinal profiles were useful for distinguishing differences in local geologic settings among sampled sites.

<em>Abstract.</em>—Iowa leads the nation in percentage of land area converted to cropland, with a resulting negative impact on streams. We examined physical habitat, land use, and fish assemblage data from 37 second- to sixth-order stream sites, representing 7 of the 10 ecoregions within Iowa. Physical habitat conditions varied widely among sites, with sand dominating substrate composition. A nonmetric multidimensional scaling ordination of physical habitat variables suggested a pattern of among-site similarities defined by a stream size axis, an axis contrasting sites dominated by either woody or rocky fish cover, and an axis characterizing degree of riparian canopy coverage. Bluntnose minnow <em>Pimephales notatus </em>and sand shiner <em>Notropis stramineus </em>were the most abundant fish species, followed by green sunfish <em>Lepomis cyanellus </em>and common carp <em>Cyprinus carpio</em>. These four species were collected in more than 80% of the sites. Fish species richness at sites averaged 22, ranging from 6 to 38, and fish index of biotic integrity (IBI) at sites averaged 47 (fair), ranging from 21 (poor) to 96 (excellent). Species richness and IBI were highest at sites characterized by rocky fish cover and relatively coarse substrates. Values for several physical habitat and land use variables were significantly different between sites with IBI ≤ 30 (fair) and sites with IBI ≥ 50 (good). We found a general pattern of IBI, species richness, total fish abundance, and width-to-depth ratio decreasing from the northeast to the southwest ecoregions, and percentage of unvegetated banks and bank slope increasing from northeast to southwest. Stable and vegetated banks, wide stream channels with coarse substrates, and rocky fish cover were associated with high biotic condition; while unvegetated and eroding banks, and deep channels with predominantly fine substrates were associated with lower biotic condition. Land use was calculated at three spatial scales: catchment, network riparian buffer, and local riparian buffer. We found few relationships of fish assemblages with land use, potentially due to sampling design and the pervasiveness of agriculture across Iowa. There is substantial variation among physical habitat, land use, and fish assemblage conditions across Iowa, due to a combination of geology, climate, zoogeography, and human alteration.

Embers, also known as firebrands, are the leading cause of building ignition during wildland-urban fires. This is attributed to direct ignitions, materials on, in, or attached to the building, and indirect ignition when they ignite vegetation or combustible material near the building which can result in direct flame contact and radiant heat that ignites the building. Where and when embers accumulate near a building and ignitable fuel is present the potential for indirect ember ignition of the building exists. Factors that influence ember accumulation near a building include building geometry, such as flat wall and re-entrant corner, building wind angle, and wind speed. Experiments conducted at the IBHS Research Center will full-scale homes with the above-mentioned factors provide quantification of ember accumulation, in terms of mass per unit area.

Abstract Anencephalus and spina bifida are known to have occurred in ancient times. A mummified anencephalic human fetus discovered in a sarcophagus at Hermopolis on the Nile was demonstrated at a meeting of the Academy of Sciences in Paris by Etienne Saint-Hilaire (1826). It was found in the catacombs of that city in the area where sacred animals, the ape and ibis, normally were buried according to the religious beliefs of ancient Egypt (Fig. 1.1). Brothwell and Powers (1968) note that the embalmer followed the usual methods of mummification, attempting to remove the brain via an opening made through the nose, and apparently the significance of the deformities in the head and neck region posteriorly were not noticed. This specimen was acquired by the King of Prussia and formed part of the collection of the Berlin Museum which was later destroyed by one of the Allied Forces' bombing raids during the Second World War (Powers 1978). The earliest post-Renaissance description of an anencephalic is probably that by Lycosthenes (1557) and another is included in the register prepared by Ambrosinus (1642) of a collection of specimens of monstrosity assembled by Aldrovandus. Taruffi (1891) wrote that the term 'anencephaly' was used by Schlegal in 1812 and after this date the term 'anencephalus' became more widely adopted. Further details of various historical aspects are given by Warkany (1959, 1971) and Lemire et al. (1978).

From its outset in the mid-1970's by Wei et al,1 ion beam sputtered interference coating (IBIC) has shown (a) two orders of magnitude over conventional fabrication methods in the reduction of scattering and absorption losses, and (b) high bonding strength and resistance against abrasion. This method for coating was first developed for ring laser gyro, where IBIC mirrors made the gyro a practical reality. The success in that area should stimulate IBIC applications in various spectral regions and power levels.

The Republic of Moldova has few wet areas. One of them was designated in the year 2000 with the status of Wetland of International Importance (Ramsar). The ecosystems of lakes and ponds are home to a multitude of bird species. Aquatic and semi-aquatic species make up a major component of the studied sector and consists of 94 species. Thousands of specimens transit the area during spring and autumn migrations; others retreat in the winter to be safe and to feed; the summer guests arrive in the warm period of the year to breed. Out of the total number of aquatic and semi-aquatic birds, 26 species are protected nationally and internationally. During the study period, rare or accidental species were recorded, such as: Bubulcus ibis, Cygnus columbianus, Branta ruficollis, Grus grus, Sterna caspia, Arenaria interpres, Larus ichthyaetus etc.

The CO2 emission is increased globally and the building sector is playing as the major industry with approximately a half percent. The carbon emission of building materials is directly affected by the energy efficiency of the building. Energy has become a limited resource in the whole world and all the sectors try to minimise their consumption to overcome the energy-related issues. Also, the selection of building materials for wall structure is playing a major role due to the highest surface area, to make a better indoor environment within the specified and required level of performance. As a result, Innovative Building Materials (IBMs) for wall structure has emerged. Even though it is currently practiced worldwide, it is not much familiar in Sri Lanka. Therefore, this research aims to identify the applicability of IBMs for wall structures of buildings in Sri Lanka. Primarily, a comprehensive literature survey was done. Three expert semi-structured interviews were carried out for the pilot survey as the foundation for data collection. Then, a questionnaire survey was done among building-related professionals and collected data were analysed using the Relative Important Index (RII). As the finding result, hollow blocks and EPS wall panels only familiarising in Sri Lanka. Finally, challenges and strategies to overcome when selecting IBMs for the wall were recognized.

Abstract This paper provides a brief survey on recent research in the area of design rationale. The study of Design Rationale spans a number of diverse disciplines, touching on concepts from research communities in Mechanical Design, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Civil Engineering and Human-Factors and Human-Computer Interaction research. We focus this survey on prototype design rationale systems for these application domains and put forward several major axes along which to describe and classify design rationale systems, including argumentation-based, descriptive, and process-based approaches. Further, we attempt to abstract the place of systems and tools for design rationale capture and retrieval in the context of contemporary knowledge-based engineering and CAD tools. This survey is structured around the fundamental different approaches, their representation schema, their capture methods, and retrieval techniques. A number of recent design rationale systems and representation schemes are presented, including JANUS, COMET, ADD, REMAP, HOS, PHIDIAS, DRIVE, IBIS. We conclude with an assessment of the current state-of-the-art and a discussion of critical open research issues.

A pragmatic and versatile airfoil design and fabrication system, named the Arbitrary Surface Flank Milling (ASFM) system, has been continuously developed and applied to the design and manufacturing of fan and axial compressor airfoils — in the form of integrally bladed rotors (IBR) and centrifugal impeller blades — for jet engines at Pratt & Whitney over the past 28 years. In a previous paper 18 years ago, we gave an account of the general concept and methodology of the system, illustrated with a number of actual production engine applications. We have since then greatly expanded the domain of applicability of the system to successfully handle blades of unusual geometric complexity. We have made strides in the area of design for flank mill-ability with conventional cutters, and cutters shaped according to blade geometry. Based on the same concept and software methodology, we have also successfully demonstrated the superior quality and cost effectiveness of Flank Super Abrasive Machining (Flank SAM) of blades in nickel-based alloy IBRs.

This study examined the biological response of aquatic organisms, collected in situ and from laboratory toxicity testing of water and soil to the herbicide Arsenal? primarily used to decrease the invasive species Arundo donax in the Rio Grande River through Big Bend National Park in Texas (USA). Biological, toxicological, physicochemical, and flow data were collected before, during, and after an Arsenal? treatment from 4 reference and 3 treatment sites. Significant differences existed in ecoregion 24 B-IBI scoring, and in toxicity testing of water and sediment, between treatment and reference sites. Greater toxicity, and a higher inverse relationship to B-IBI scoring, was observed in sediment samples compared to water samples. This could be due to the surfactant nonylphenol ethoxylate (NPE), added to the Arsenal? formulation rather than the active ingredient imazapyr. Care must be implemented with the results of this research due to many confounding variables that occurred during the study period including flash flooding. Although flashy hydrology is relatively common to the region, it can influence aquatic macroinvertebrate assemblage structure, function, and species richness measures with these dropping due to scour and downstream displacement within a reach during, and for some period following, flooding. Therefore, flash flooding would be expected to have some effect on aquatic macroinvertebrate assemblages and subsequent B-IBI scoring. Additionally, flooding will cause some displacement, and deposition, of sediment throughout the study area. This flooding could impact the sediment toxicity results as sediment-bound contaminants could be spread some distance from their origin. Arsenal? treatment occurred during this study near sites Treatment 1 and Treatment 2 on 5/29 and 5/31 2022 respectively. This represented an extreme condition as far as concentration of potential toxicants in the water are concerned and these relatively high concentrations would be expected to have decreased within a relatively short period of time, especially in the water. It was outside of the scope and budget of this project to obtain concentrations of imazapyr or surfactants from sediment or water. Therefore, exact doses of imazapyr or surfactant for response curves could not be obtained. No sample site exists in isolation rather, influences from one reach can significantly impact downstream areas. This is especially true for aquatic ecosystems in arid regions that often exhibit flashy hydrology. However, we believe the findings from this study provide indication of potential toxicity of some magnitude as well as provide direction for management. Decisions of whether the toxic effects of herbicide use to aquatic macroinvertebrates outweigh the beneficial effects of Arundo donax control should be carefully considered.
