Abstract:
Two cultivars of durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L.) with known, and different, grain-Cd accumulation were used to compare root tissue accumulation of Cd with root morphology. Six-day-old 'Kyle' and 'Arcola' seedlings were exposed to a range of Cd2 + concentrations (3.91 × 10-8 - 3.91 × 10-7 M) for 0-200 min, and root Cd contents for the two cultivars were compared with root morphological characteristics. 'Kyle' roots contained 35% less Cd per root system after 200 min of exposure and had less root surface area and fewer root tips than 'Arcola'. 'Kyle' roots also contained 30% less Cd per gram of dry weight than 'Arcola' roots after 200 min of exposure. 'Kyle' roots also had fewer root tips per unit of root dry weight and less surface area per unit of dry weight (DW) than 'Arcola'. When cadmium concentration data (µg·g-1 DW) were expressed per unit of root surface area (µg·cm-2) and per number of root tips (µg·tip-1), the difference in root Cd content between the two cultivars was smaller. These results suggest that greater root Cd content of 'Arcola' than 'Kyle' can be explained by differences in morphology, specifically that a greater surface area and more root tips in 'Arcola' leads to greater Cd accumulation in root tissue.Key words: cadmium accumulation, durum wheat, root morphology.

Abstract:
Currently, the route planning functions in 2D/3D campus navigation systems in the market are unable to process indoor and outdoor localization information simultaneously, and the UI experiences are not optimal because they are limited by the service platforms. An ARCore-based augmented reality campus navigation system is designed in this paper in order to solve the relevant problems. Firstly, the proposed campus navigation system uses ARCore to enhance reality by presenting 3D information in real scenes. Secondly, a visual inertial ranging algorithm is proposed for real-time locating and map generating in mobile devices. Finally, rich Unity3D scripts are designed in order to enhance users’ autonomy and enjoyment during navigation experience. In this paper, indoor navigation and outdoor navigation experiments are carried out at the Lingang campus of Shanghai University of Electric Power. Compared with the AR outdoor navigation system of Gaode, the proposed AR system can achieve increased precise outdoor localization by deploying the visual inertia odometer on the mobile phone and realizes the augmented reality function of 3D information and real scene, thus enriching the user’s interactive experience. Furthermore, four groups of students have been selected for system testing and evaluation. Compared with traditional systems, such as Gaode map or Internet media, experimental results show that our system could facilitate the effectiveness and usability of learning on campus.

Abstract:
People have always relied on some form of instrument to assist them to get to their destination, from hand-drawn maps and compasses to technology-based navigation systems. Many individuals these days have a smartphone with them at all times, making it a common part of their routine. Using GPS technology, these cellphones offer applications such as Google Maps that let people find their way around the outside world. Indoor navigation, on the other hand, does not offer the same level of precision. The development of indoor navigation systems is continuously ongoing. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, RFID, and computer vision are some of the existing technologies used for interior navigation in current systems. In this article, we discuss the shortcomings of current indoor navigation solutions and offer an alternative approach based on augmented reality and ARCore. Navigating an indoor environment is made easier with ARCore, which brings augmented reality to your smartphone or tablet.

Abstract:
With the development of Apple’s ARKit and Google’s ARCore, mobile augmented reality (AR) applications have become much more popular. For Android devices, ARCore provides basic motion tracking and environmental understanding. However, with current software frameworks it can be difficult to create an AR application from the ground up. Our solution is CalAR, which is a lightweight, open-source software environment to develop AR applications for Android devices, while giving the programmer full control over the phone’s resources. With CalAR, the programmer can create marker-less AR applications which run at 60 frames per second on Android smartphones. These applications can include more complex environment understanding, physical simulation, user interaction with virtual objects, and interaction between virtual objects and objects in the physical environment. With CalAR being based on CalVR, which is our multi-platform virtual reality software engine, it is possible to port CalVR applications to an AR environment on Android phones with minimal effort. We demonstrate this with the example of a spatial visualization application.

Full text
Abstract:
Cadmium is toxic to humans. Because it enters the food chain through plant uptake, application of phosphorus fertilizer carrying Cd as an impurity may increase the Cd concentration of cereal grains above proposed threshold values. Field experiments were conducted to determine the effect of two phosphorus fertilizers on Cd concentration of two durum wheat ( Triticum turgidum L. var. durum) cultivars, a low Cd accumulator (Arcola) and a high accumulator (Kyle) grown in two soils of southwestern Saskatchewan, Canada. Phosphorus was applied as monoammonium phosphate (15 mg Cd kg-1) and as triple superphosphate (75 mg Cd kg-1) at a rate of 18 kg P ha-1. The fertilizer was applied in a mid-row band or in the seed row. Nitrogen was applied as urea or as ammonium sulphate. Variability in Cd concentration was at tributed primarily to genotype and environment, which accounted for 41% and 29% of the explained variability, respectively. The Cd concentration of Arcola averaged 80 µg kg-1, while that of Kyle averaged 143 µg kg-1. In contrast, fertilization accounted for only a small proportion of the explained variability, with phosphorus treatments accounting for 3% of the model sums of squares, and N sources accounting for less than 1%. Phosphorus fertilization increased the Cd concentration of Arcola, regardless of source or placement, but the proportion of samples with Cd concentration above 100 µg kg-1 remained unchanged at 17%. In the case of Kyle the Cd concentration increased only when the fertilizer was seed-placed, but in this case the proportion of samples with Cd concentration above 100 µg kg-1 increased from 67 to 90%. The effect of P appeared to result from the effects of fertilizer on plant density and vigour rather than from Cd impurities in the fertilizer. "Net Cd2+ flux at the root surface of durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. var. durum) cultivars in relation to cultivar differences in Cd accumulation." Abstract:
Net Cd2+ flux and Cd accumulation for four durum wheat cultivars were measured to determine whether the net Cd2+ flux to the roots plays a role in cultivar differences in Cd accumulation. Plants were germinated for 4 d in the dark and then grown hydroponically for 2 d before being placed in a Petri dish with their roots immersed in a 1.0 µM Cd solution. Net Cd2+ flux to the root was measured at ten positions located 0.5 mm to 25 mm from the root tip. Cadmium concentrations were measured using Cd2+-selective microel ectrodes; Cd2+ flux to the root surface was then calculated using the MIFE™ system. The flux was greatest nearest the root tip (within 1.5 mm of the tip) and there were no significant differences in net Cd2+ flux among the various cultivars — likely because of the absence of a Casparian strip in the root tip cells. Net Cd2+ flux decreased with increasing distance from the root tip, with significant differences among cultivars. The mean Cd2+ flux to the roots in the 2–25 mm region increased in the following order: Arcola ≈ G9265-AU ≈ Kyle < G9265-BF, with the low grain Cd accumulators (Arcola and G9265-AU) generally exhibiting lower fluxes than the high grain Cd accumulators (Kyle and G9265-BF). However, net Cd2+ flux did not correspond to total plant Cd content, which increased in the order: G9265-AU < G9265-BF < Kyle < Arcola. We conclude that while there are durum wheat cultivar differences in the net Cd2+ flux at the root surface, their contribution to cultivar differences in total plant Cd accumulation is generally overshadowed by one or more other Cd accumulation factors. Key words: Cadmium, microelectrodes, plant cadmium content, cadmium flux, durum wheat, cultivar

Abstract:

Abstract:
The existence of Palaeolithic stone tools on the coast of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia has been knownfrom at least the late nineteenth century. In 1987, survey investigations in the latter municipality led tothe discovery of the site of Cerro (Madalena), excavated in 1989 and 1992. These excavations produceda collection of lithics that are techno-typologically related to the Acheulian. The Palaeolithic site of Praiada Aguda (Arcozelo), now published for the first time, was identified in 2004. Shortly after its discovery, more than one hundred macrolithic artefacts were found. The presence of hand-axes and cleavers suggestsa Lower Palaeolithic chronology. Initially, these artefacts were associated with a marine deposit, possibly of Eemian age, which was outcropping in the area of the site. However, subsequent fieldworkshowed that this correlation is not clear since the lithic artefacts that were found in situ were collectedfrom another deposit with features that differ from those observed in the Eemian deposit. So far it hasnot been possible to carry out a sedimentological characterisation of the deposit where the artefacts occur, nor to establish any stratigraphic correlation between this deposit and the Eemian fossil beach. Therefore, our main objective is to draft some hypotheses regarding the site formation processes and its relativechronology.

Abstract:
In this work, we propose an assistive navigation system for visually impaired people (ANSVIP) that takes advantage of ARCore to acquire robust computer vision-based localization. To complete the system, we propose adaptive artificial potential field (AAPF) path planning that considers both efficiency and safety. We also propose a dual-channel human–machine interaction mechanism, which delivers accurate and continuous directional micro-instruction via a haptic interface and macro-long-term planning and situational awareness via audio. Our system user-centrically incorporates haptic interfaces to provide fluent and continuous guidance superior to the conventional turn-by-turn audio-guiding method; moreover, the continuous guidance makes the path under complete control in avoiding obstacles and risky places. The system prototype is implemented with full functionality. Unit tests and simulations are conducted to evaluate the localization, path planning, and human–machine interactions, and the results show that the proposed solutions are superior to those of the present state-of-the-art solutions. Finally, integrated tests are carried out with low-vision and blind subjects to verify the proposed system.

Abstract:
Abstract Periosteal osteoblastoma is an extremely rare bone-forming neoplasm located on the surface of cortical bone. Of the fewer than 30 cases of periosteal osteoblastomas found in the literature, 2 have been reported to be located in cranial bone, and these have not been documented in detail with clinical history, radiographic findings, macroscopic features, and microscopic findings. Although the differential diagnoses of periosteal lesions include parosteal and periosteal osteosarcoma, periosteal chondroma and chondrosarcoma, osteochondroma, osteoid osteoma, periostitis ossificans, and myositis ossificans, an important differential diagnosis both radiologically and pathologically of such a lesion in the cranium is meningioma. We report an unusual case of periosteal osteoblastoma located in the frontal cranial bone that was radiologically consistent with a meningioma. The differential diagnosis of metaplastic meningioma with differentiation toward bone is discussed.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Recently, Arcones and Giné (1992, pp. 13–47, in R. LePage & L. Billard [eds.], Exploring the Limits of Bootstrap, New York: Wiley) established that the bootstrap distribution of the M-estimator converges weakly to the limit distribution of the estimator in probability. In contrast, Brown and Newey (1992, Bootstrapping for GMM, Seminar note) discovered that the bootstrap distribution of the GMM overidentification test statistic does not converge weakly to the x2 distribution. In this paper, it is shown that the bootstrap distribution of the GMM estimator converges weakly to the limit distribution of the estimator in probability. Asymptotic coverage probabilities of the confidence intervals based on the bootstrap percentile method are thus equal to their nominal coverage probability.

Abstract:
Early Cretaceous Tsagaangol formation refers to Zoolen terrain. This study attempts to make classification of the sandstones of the formation, define its sources and identify its alteration and paleoclimate condition. The sandstones of the formation are rich in mineral fragments, especially, quartz (comprising 70-75% of the entire content) and the composition is identified to be varying from subarcose to lithic arcose. As plotted on the source defining diagrams, they have been identified to be of continental block and mixed orogen and to get intensely altered or weathered under warm humid climate condition.

Abstract:
The fast evolution in computational and sensor technologies brings previously niche solutions to a wider userbase. As such, 3D reconstruction technologies are reaching new use-cases in scientific and everyday areas where they were not present before. Cost-effective and easy-to-use solutions include camera-based 3D scanning techniques, such as photogrammetry. This paper provides an overview of the available solutions and discusses in detail the depth-image based Real-time Appearance-based Mapping (RTAB-Map) technique as well as a smartphone-based solution that utilises ARCore, the Augmented Reality (AR) framework of Google. To qualitatively compare the two 3D reconstruction technologies, a simple length measurement-based method was applied with a purpose-designed reference object. The captured data were then analysed by a processing algorithm. In addition to the experimental results, specific case studies are briefly discussed, evaluating the applicability based on the capabilities of the technologies. As such, the paper presents the use-case of interior surveying in an automated laboratory as well as an example for using the discussed techniques for landmark surveying. The major findings are that point clouds created with these technologies provide a direction- and shape-accurate model, but those contain mesh continuity errors, and the estimated scale factor has a large standard deviation.
