Abstract:

Abstract:
This research focuses on manuscript fragments preserved in the State Archives of Modena which originate from the Archivio Estense: it has been revealed that a significant number of these fragments come from the bindings of volumes that make up the archival complex of the House of Este, the largest collection held at the State Archives of Modena - this archival fund spans from 1317 to 1797 and comprises a diverse range of documents in terms of quantity and types, yet it remains coherent due to its origin from a single institutional context. The thesis begins by providing a detailed analysis of the archival history of the fragment collection, tracing its origins and exploring its previous research paths. Additionally, it suggests an ideal expansion of the collection through a census, conducted during the research, that has led to the discovery and identification of approximately 50 new Latin fragments reused in the registers of the Archivio Estense, still in situ. Hence, it will be the first study to disclose a significant portion of the medieval manuscript heritage that has survived in fragmentary form and largely remained unpublished. In contrast to previous research that focused on the analysis of individual exemplars or groups of fragments with similar characteristics (for example, the Hebrew fragments or those with musical notation), this thesis offers a comprehensive approach by examining fragmentary evidence attributable to the same context of reuse. The core of the thesis focuses on the methodology developed for reconstructing provenances defined as "archaeological", i.e. related to the material context of fragment discovery, particularly focusing on witnesses reused in the bindings of the Archivio Estense registers.Furthermore, the thesis includes documentary fragments - typically excluded from fragmentology studies - providing additional research opportunities and offering significant insights into systematic aspects of reuse, especially within the domains ruled by the Este family. This interdisciplinary approach highlights the importance of archival and diplomatic studies in examining manuscript fragments, which were traditionally considered primarily from paleographical and codicological perspectives.A partial catalog of Latin parchment fragments attributed to the Estense Archives is presented, following the descriptive sheet model established in the Fragmentarium database. The analysis of the fragments includes the identification of content, dating, location, as well as material and historical-contextual aspects. In some cases, the common origin of multiple fragments has been recognized, allowing for the reconstruction of membra disiecta.Parallel to this research, a pilot project for digitizing fragments from the State Archives of Modena was carried out in collaboration with the ARCE Studies Center at the University of Bologna. This project focused on selected specimens for cataloging, with metadata coordination undertaken by the thesis author; a report on the activities conducted within the project is included in the thesis, along with reflections on the adopted methodologies

Abstract:

Abstract:
The XIVth-XVth Florentine family diaries (and among them the Cronica domestica of Donato Velluti), are dedicated to the celebration of the family. However, the author leads a personal discourse : the expression of self appears through his conscious relation with his own writing, and in the autobiografical dimension of the genealogical account. In the history of the family, the glance related to the others, from now on more attentive with individualities, highlights the family structures, especially the dominating place held by the father. The father writer " governs " his family group by his own behaviour and by the writing of his book : in this book, he endeavours not only to educate the souls and to protect the bodies, but also to form citizens, with the purpose of ensuring the continuity of the family, her economic strength and her politic power in the city, transmitting the values of his social class, while expressing his concerns in front of the escape of time and the evolution of the customs and mentalities

Abstract:

Abstract:
This monograph concerns a family from South-West France, the Vignial , based on a trove of family archives, and public archives: one hundred fifty years ascension, one century stagnation , and a brilliant surge after the Revolution. Seven family fathers since Martin was born in 1545 in Lauragais, down to Pierre who died in Bordeaux in 1834. Peasant-merchant Martin appears as a buyer of land in 1583; the 1596 survey of Revel witnesses the wealth of the royalist church-warden whose son Mathieu marries a noble Toulousaine. Three sons become in Cadillac members of duke d’Epernon’s estates management, fight against the Fronde, and marry nobly, Jean becoming a king’s secretary, and viscount of Castillon. François’s son, a captain at Royal-Vaisseaux, marries a commoner in 1698, ending the family’s ascension, son and grand-son Daniel return to merchandise. Daniel’s son Pierre is a revolutionary at 15, fights in Vendée in 1793, then marries Justine Pérès Duvivier, the daughter to a great trader and owner of Hackaert, a sugar estate in Martinique. Thanks to his network in Paris, to his lawyer friends, and to new political trends, he is appointed a judge by Napoleon in 1806, confirmed in 1814, a vice-president in the Cent-Jours, and revoked by the king end 1815. He becomes majority owner of Hackaert in 1823, and is reinstated as a highly respected judge in 1825; sugar revenues secure a large wealth for him, and a high ranking in the Bordeaux bourgeoisie. The Vignial have been able to take high risks for the sake of their careers; they remain a model of continuity, of network building, and of a professional and geographical mobility, from Lauragais to the Antilles

Abstract:
The rich collections of the younger brother of Louis XIV and his family have been little studied because of their near complete destruction. The study of the silver, jewelry and art objects in precious metal belonging to the Orléans family is further complicated by the disappearance of all household records as well as the documents that were once conserved at the goldsmith's hall from this period (1625-1725). Thanks to the gracious permission of the Orléans family, we have been able to study their private archives and to shed new light on these collections. Among other research, we have transcribed and analyzed fifteen inventories that have allowed us to create a glossary explaining the meaning of terms that have fallen into disuse. Further, we have established a topology, in graph form representing all of the inventoried silverware, over a period of one hundred years, which facilitates comparisons concerning the evolution and ruse of French silver. This research is complemented by documents presented for the first time from English, German and Spanish sources

Abstract:
The perception of how pre-modern family groups regulated, organized, identified, and reproduced themselves is shaped by the creation, use and maintenance set by the organizational archives. Based on this assumption, this study analyzes the viscounts of Vila Nova de Cerveira archive as well as a group of families' generations that played a role both in its formation and preservation from the 14th to the 17th centuries, namely the Lima, Brito Nogueira, and Lima Brito Nogueira generations. This investigation sought to examine how these generations documented themselves, how they transformed their records into an archive, and how they used them to consolidate one another as a group with a heritage, memory, and identity of their own. Ultimately, it was questioned how these uses played a role in the establishment and strengthening of the house of the viscounts of Vila Nova de Cerveira as an institution until the 17th century. In pursuit of this objective, an Historical Archivistics approach was selected with the purpose of looking for the interchange of theories and methodologies of History, Archival Science, Information Science and Historical Anthropology in the analysis of archives. The research path was presently initiated by questioning the Visconde de Vila Nova de Cerveira e Marqueses de Ponte de Lima fonds and by mapping scattered fonds and collection records which belonged to the organizational archives of the abovementioned groups. With that, an understanding of several intertextualities affecting the intelligibility of the past represented in these records was deemed necessary before any interpretation of its context could be executed. To better contextualize the mapped records associated with the generations in the study, an organic framework was prepared, based on the systemic model proposed by Malheiro da Silva. This classification framework is made available, along with the standardized archival description of a section of the records that were analyzed in this study, through the AtoM software. In addition to the existing records, in the inventories produced by these generations, references to unaccounted records that belonged to their archives, were also collected. Simultaneously, efforts were made to elucidate the numerous constraints associated with the reconstitution of both existing and missing records, the choices that were made, and the operations carried out regarding the records. Finally, the qualitative analysis of the reconstructed corpus allowed us to conclude that the groups under study were institutionalized mainly through the transmission of entails and of properties and rights granted by the Crown. They formed a family-institution or House, organized by each generation under the authority of a pater familias. These generations used their archives to prove ownership of property and privileges, as well as to facilitate property management and its income. The archives also served as a foundation for narratives concerning the collective memory(ies) and identity(ies) of the group, especially for the Lima Brito Nogueira generations. The families as institutions were entities in constant configuration, as was the archive supporting them. Consequently, institutional consolidation depended on ongoing efforts made by each generation in order to transmit a cohesive cultural legacy to a representative of the same or next generation and forge a sense of group identity, as well as to convey the records turned into an archive that supported this construction

The main source contains 1539 acts of homage and feudal recognition from Rouergue and Southern Cévennes to princes of Armagnac between 1308 and 1400. The study of these acts provides better knowledge of the history of thne Armagnac family in the fourteenth cent. And of the geography of their rouergat and cevenol estates. These estates cover the county of Rodez which is attached to the county of Armagnac, and the viscounty of Creissels (near Millau) et the barony of Roquefeuil-Meyrueis which are attached to the viscounty of Fezensaguet. This work illustrates the vitality of feudality in this area during the late Middle Ages. Feudal-vassalic relationships affect not only the whole nobility of the principality, but also the diocesam high clergy, rich townsmen, officers and countrymen. Recognitions concern both large patrimonies and small land-holdings. Feudal ties are still used by rising princely power. This princely power comprises increasingly significant staff including of university trained lawmen who introduce into acts Roman law terminology, thus at the same time granting local rights of justice to feudatories, magnify the prince's authority, now uncontested

Abstract:
Finalmente, foi referida a actual situação do património arquivístico no sector do vinho do Porto; ### Abstract: This dissertation aimed to study and organize the Arquivo da Casa Ferreira, since its establishment (1751) to the death of D. Antónia (1896). A thorough analysis of the documentation was conducted, to identify its producers and the relationships between them, as well as understand why there were personal and/or family documents in a supposedly business archive. Abstract:
This work examines the sexual mores of the working classes at the end of the Victorian era (1875-1901). The research is based on the study of private correspondences and testimonies found in the archives of the London Foundling Hospital, a charitable institute welcoming illegitimate children since the end of the eighteenth century. Thanks to these primary sources, we will bring to life certain elements of the past and rediscover key moments in the lives of young couples in London and its suburbs most of whom were working or lower middle class skilled workers who met in the busy streets of London. We will endeavour to paint a faithful portrait of the loving and sexual relations of these young British couples. This study is structured around three principal parts: firstly, we will construct a portrait of the population under study, evaluate the reliability of the sources available and focus on the historical and ideological context of the last quarter of the nineteenth century. Secondly, we will interpret the private correspondences and examine what the male discourse tells us about the sexual mores of the couples under study. We will also look into the moral codes regulating love affairs during the period. We will bring this study to a close with a more theoretical approach to the sources enabling us to draw certain conclusions concerning the relationship between the sexes and the romantic ideal of the couples

Abstract:
With digital technology now dominating the film and photography industry, analog resources are becoming scarce. Simultaneously, memories preserved through personal family archives also are in danger of deterioration. Time, heat and humidity can cause film to decay just as the passage of time and the erosion of memory allows their contents to fade. In Looking Back, my family film and photography archives are exhumed and collectively examined by myself and my family. Reflecting upon this massive accumulation of imagery and their attached memories seems an endless task. However, as expressed in Looking Back, the greater the effort to bring conclusive memories to the surface, the more impossible the task proves to be, and larger questions about the significance of family history result.

CRUCIATTI, GABRIELLA. "Da archivio familiare a collezione gentilizia. Il fondo Montereale Mantica." Doctoral thesis, Università di Siena, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/11365/1075442.

Full text
Abstract:
From family archive to aristocratic collection. The Montereale Mantica collection The history of the Montereale Mantica family starts at the beginning of the Seventeenth century from the union of two dynasties with different background and origin, but both significantly present in the XV-XVII centuries in the social and political life of Pordenone. An important role built also thanks to the network of parental ties woven over time with members of the Friulian aristocracy, including the Fontana and Ricchieri. It is no coincidence, therefore, that two fundamental works to the city's history - the Diplomatarium Portusnaonense by Giuseppe Valentinelli (1865) and the Storia di Pordenone by Andrea Benedetti (1964) - have largely drawn on the papers kept in the Montereale Mantica house to document both facts and institutional and cultural contexts of this community. The aim of this work is to traces the history of the family's archive, highlighting settings and ways in which the documents where created or transferred, stored and ordered. In particular, the work analyses the impact of the personal interests and activities of Pietro Montereale Mantica (1793-1861) on the constructed nature of the collection. The investigation of the archival material has interwoven three directives. Firstly the comparison with the timeline, represented by the story of the family and of the groups, persons and institutions that, for various reasons, had participated in its events; secondly the attention to extrinsic aspects and marks that could explain the development of practices and strategies on the archive's processing; thirdly the analysis of the incidence of professional and cultural relations of Pietro Montereale Mantica on the internal structure of the fond. And it is precisely his passion for collecting and his cooperation with the Nineteenth-century world of local historiography that makes the structure of his family archive, as documented by this work, peculiar. It is, in fact, a collection that differs in various aspects from the "azienda famiglia" archive, the model of Italian's aristocratic archive in the pre-unification period, of which there are also examples in Friuli. Certainly, we find in Peter a "genealogical ganze", which is the basis of the vision of the archive as a heritage to be handed down on to future generations. But in addition to this, there is particular attention to identify in the papers of his family, and other private and public corporate bodies, the documents useful to shed light on the events and personalities of the Pordenone's history. In this context, the introduction to the inventory, exclusively based on a topographical criterion, presents an interpretation of the general structure of the collection. Besides, it identifies the archive’s parts and the interrelations between them, how the documents were acquired, the choices made by the authors of the archival process and the modifications due to the early Twentieth century's researchers. Forgotten for over fifty years, the Montereale Mantica archive is now available again to researchers. It forms the basis for the analysis and deepening of the history of this family and of the parental groups linked to it. Moreover, the comparison between the documents of this archive and other local archives will shed light on aspects of the community's history that are still unexplored.

Abstract:
Textiles are a ubiquitous facet of global culture, with the potential to become records of significant relationships, events, and stories over their lifetime. This research project investigates textiles which have been informally gathered together, and kept within the home, for their emotional or symbolic resonance. No longer used for their designed function, these textiles are saved from disposal for their ability to prompt personal and family histories and stories, in a phenomenon identified within the study as the personal textile archive. Textile design research is increasingly concerned with incorporating interdisciplinary social and cultural frameworks within its traditional research fields of technology, innovation and creativity, to frame a textile's socio-cultural relevance. This shift in the field requires the development of specific textile design research tools which are capable of producing purposeful research which analyses the material and designed properties of textiles in relation to their symbolic or affective experience, in order to understand the user-experience of a textile. Phenomenological research methods are established as tools for investigating phenomena and lived experience from a first-person perspective, which the investigation of the personally significant textiles within this study requires. A particular method, interpretative phenomenological analysis, has been specifically adapted for textile design research, and it is demonstrated within this research project that is is able to investigate and analyse the personal textile archive, producing original insights into this phenomenon. Through this application of this adaptation of interpretative phenomenological analysis, the design, affordances and craftsmanship of a textile are revealed as interweaving with its emotional, sentimental, biographical orfamily historical meaning. This is a useful and important original contribution to textile design research, and the recommendation is made that other researchers in the field will be able to utilise and further test this tool within future textile design research studies.

Abstract:
[Abstract]: This study explores similarities and differences in the early family history of an adult group with schizophrenia, and a matched group with major depression. Attachment theory, trauma theory and their relation to serious mental illnesses are used to understand the clinical participants’ reported early traumatic experiences of emotional deprivation and neglect.A retrospective design includes self-report questionnaires from clinical participants, and semi-structured interviews with participants’ mothers/primary caregivers.Data analysis includes:1. Assessment of matched participants’ reported prevalence of emotional deprivation and neglect in four different age groups;2. Assessment of themes of early family trauma and sequelae from the mother interviews;3. Qualitative analysis of sample mother/primary caregiver interviews from each diagnostic group of the manner in which the interviewees construct their stories around trauma;4. Quantitative analysis of a conceptualised model representing the arguments developed in the body of this dissertation. The second and third forms of analysis above include a panel of three experts, blind to diagnosis, validating this researcher’s findings.Standard multiple regression analysis indicates participants’ reported neglect across all age groups significantly predicts emotional deprivation, with neglect contributing 27.4% of the variability, but with no individual age band contributing significantly to the equation.Themes from the mother interviews are clustered into three constructs, guided by the research questions and this researcher’s clinical experience, the mothers’ emphases and the expert panel into Early Family Trauma, Maternal Fatigue, and Clinical Participants’ Early Attachment Difficulties. The mothers’ manner of discussing early family trauma is defined via speech markers as dissociative (disorganised, incoherent, and unresolved) or coherent (grounded, sequential and resolved) according to Attachment Theory and the literature on dissociation. Speakers are assigned as using dissociation or not as a categorical variable.A model is conceptualised to represent the interrelatedness of data from the participants and their mothers, including the manner in which the mothers relate early family trauma. Canonical Discriminant Function Analysis indicates that early family trauma and maternal fatigue discriminate little between diagnostic groups and that maternal non-resolution of early traumatic events and (possibly related) participant offspring attachment difficulties contribute most to distinguishing between the two diagnostic groups. Finally, a greater number of participants from the schizophrenia sample than from the depression sample continue to live with mother, possibly indicating that the early attachment difficulties remain unresolved.Discussion offers a reconceptualisation of several major and/or established theories concerning risk factors in schizophrenia, and examines shortcomings in the literature, concluding with suggestions for future research.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis is about photographic archives. Specifically, it concerns the process of acquisition for family photograph albums as archival texts. It argues that the process of acquisition writes history, and not one sole author. Additionally it argues that the institutional policy of an archive governs this process. Further, it argues that there is a homology between a public and private archive. In this light, it pursues an autobiographical approach, and compares the author's family photograph album with a family photograph album in the McCord Museum of Canadian History.

Abstract:

Abstract:

This work presents the first complete and annotated edition of the texts from the Gallabu family archive, from the city of Ur in southern Babylonia. It is a family of prebendaries-barbers that left the longest known private archive in the first century BC. Documents of the archive cover over 260 years and include Neo-Babylonian, Achaemenid, and Hellenistic periods. The thesis provides an insight into the nature of the Gallabu archive and examines the history of the family and its heritage. The family of Gallabu is considered within a political and socio-economic context in order to study different aspects of the socio-economic life of the urban elite of the city of Ur in the first millennium BC, the second most important city in southern Babylonia at the time

Abstract:

Mashabela, Raisibe Promise. "Newspaper representations of the psychological profile of domestic violence : an archival study." Thesis, University of Limpopo, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10386/1605.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.A. (Psychology)) --University of Limpopo, 2015
The aim of the study was to explore the psychological profiles of perpetrators of domestic violence as represented in newspaper articles. An archival research approach was chosen as the appropriate design for the present study. The researcher accessed and studied all newspaper articles from two daily newspapers reporting on domestic violence over a two-year period (that is, from January 2011 up to December 2012). A total of 98 newspaper articles (sixty from the Sowetan newspaper, and 38 thirty eight from the Daily Sun newspaper) covering the period under review were retrieved. The data was captured on a self-developed data record sheet. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to analyse the data. The results were analysed and presented using frequency tables, descriptive statistics and cross-tabulations. The results of the study showed that the majority of the victims of domestic violence were women with little education and skills. Assault, attempted murder and murder were found to be the forms of violence perpetrated against the victims. The majority of the perpetrators (70.4%) were males, with higher education and skills. Some of the perpetrators were represented in the newspaper articles as being emotionally troubled (69.4%), passively aggressive (11.2%), mentally disturbed (5.1%) and socially deviant (3.1%). The majority of the mental health problems that were associated with the perpetrators of domestic violence included depression, borderline personality and acute psychosis. A number of triggers were found to lead to domestic violence. These included family arguments, jealousy, substance abuse, and criminal behaviour. Based on the above results, the study is concluded by recommending anger and stress management as some of the programmes that the government could introduce to minimise domestic violence.

Poos, Francoise. "The making of a national audio-visual archive : the CNA and the 'Hidden Images' exhibition." Thesis, De Montfort University, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2086/12429.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the agency and practices of visual material in the construction of collective memory and national identity. It is grounded in the case study of one particular institution, the Centre national de l’audiovisuel (CNA) in Luxembourg, and in the institutional life and transformations of a specific body of images, Luxembourg’s Amateur Film Collection and the exhibition Hidden Images mounted in 2007. The CNA is Luxembourg’s central repository for film, photography and sound documents brought together under the rubric of ‘national heritage’. The amateur film archive comprises today about 10.000 objects from the 1920s to the mid 1970s. Made in Luxembourg or by people from Luxembourg, the movies, and even more so the film stills as a condensed version of the archive, represent the nation, yet as an ensemble they remain contained, making a close examination possible. I consider in this context that images are not however only indexical referents, but also, and especially, bundled objects existing materially in the world, entangled in a complex tissue of social interactions and practices, tensioned between document and art work and interwoven with shifting institutional aspirations. Drawing on the work of Ingold, I characterize this as a meshwork, in which everything is connected and visual objects evolve organically, subject to internal and external influences. Thus, this thesis observes the private family films as they meet and mesh with the public institution CNA where they develop new agency as historical documents, as works of art or triggers of collective memory. It explores the filmed material in relation to the national and institutional politics of the CNA’s emergence, the shifting culture of curatorial intention and ambition for the collection, the hierarchies of information within CNA. By making visible the lines, the connections and the nodes of this meshwork, as well as its patterns of disruption and fracture, this study highlights the varying interactions with Luxembourg’s Amateur Film Collection in particular, and, more generally, the performative nature of family photographs and films as they are used to construct images of nationality. The small scale of Luxembourg as a nation-state presents a demonstrable case study of the ecology of images in national identity building and makes an unusually grounded contribution to the wider debate about the ways in which images strengthen a sense of belonging, and how archives and museums use photography and film to construct and articulate visions of nationhood.

Burrows, James Kenneth. "A critical guide to sources for the study of the history of the family in British Columbia, 1849-1918." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/28705.

Abstract:
Access to archival holdings is one of the fundamental problems faced by archivists. The difficulties in providing access to the wide variety of subjects contained with even one archives is further complicated by the changing fields of research which require the use of archives. Neither provenance based or subject indexing access systems have been able to cope with these changing needs. The creation of thematic guides has been an attempt to offer more flexible subject access to collections since each guide deals with a separate topic. Despite their value in providing access to current themes, the thematic guide has been simply a listing of collections and does not offer any analysis of how various forms of records, their availability and their uses relate to the subject. The creation of such a critical guide forms the bulk of the paper. To investigate the effectiveness of this type of guide, records which relate to the study of the history of the family in British Columbia were identified. This particular subject area was chosen because of its relative newness and since many of the records applicable to its study are not easily found. The holdings of the British Columbia Archives and Records Service and the City of Vancouver Archives provided the relevant materials for the study. The records chosen as useful to the study of the family were listed and many collections were examined closely. From this review of holdings, an analysis of records types and their value to the study of the family in British Columbia was developed. Standard appraisal and descriptive techniques were employed for the analysis. In addition, a study of past research uses was done to provide a better understanding of how the records could be employed. It was found that a critical guide could be produced using modifications of standard formats, such as the basic form for inventories suggested by the Society of American Archivists. In addition, appraisal criteria were applied to the categories of documents in order to assess their value. Using these standardized techniques means that an analysis of record types will be better understood by others. The critical guide offers a vehicle for archivists to provide researchers with more information about the records in a less haphazard fashion.

Kilpi, Hanna Ilona. "Non-comital women of twelfth-century England : a charter based analysis." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2015. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/7322/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis sets out to explore the place and agency of non-comital women in twelfth-century Anglo-Norman England. Until now, broad generalisations have been applied to all aristocratic women based on a long established scholarship on royal and comital women. Non-comital women have been overlooked, mainly because of an assumed lack of suitable sources from this time period. The first aim of this thesis is to demonstrate that there is a sufficient corpus of charters for a study of this social group of women. It is based on a database created from 5545 charters, of which 3046 were issued by non-comital women and men, taken from three case study counties, Oxfordshire, Suffolk and Yorkshire, and is also supported by other government records. This thesis demonstrates that non-comital women had significant social and economic agency in their own person. By means of a detailed analysis of charters and their clauses this thesis argues that scholarship on non-comital women must rethink the framework applied to the study of non-comital women to address the lifecycle as one of continuities and as active agents in a wider public society. Non-comital women’s agency and identity was not only based on land or in widowhood, which has been the one period in their life cycles where scholars have recognised some level of autonomy, and women had agency in all stages of their life cycle. Women’s agency and identity were drawn from and part of a wider framework that included their families, their kin, and broader local political, religious, and social networks. Natal families continued to be important sources of agency and identity to women long after they had married. Part A of the thesis applies modern charter diplomatic analysis methods to the corpus of charters to bring out and explore women’s presence therein. Part B contextualises these findings and explores women’s agency in their families, landholding, the gift-economy, and the wider religious and social networks of which they were a part.

Doyle, John Colm. "A systematic audit and evaluation of archival assessment records in a residential assessment service for children, adolescents and families." Thesis, University of Essex, 2016. http://repository.essex.ac.uk/17620/.

Abstract:
“Actually we have it all wrong, when we say we look forward to the future. The future is a void and we walk, so as to say, blindly with our backs towards it. At best we see what we have left behind”. (Fritz Perls, 1969). “We do not think ourselves into new ways of living, we live ourselves into new ways of thinking.” (Richard Rohr, 2003). This work is an evaluation of assessment work completed in my employment setting. I work as Senior Psychologist for Tusla, Child and Family Agency, (formerly Health Service Executive, H.S.E.), in a residential assessment service that provides multi-discipline assessment of children, adolescents, and families for community social work teams, located in counties Cork and Kerry, in the Republic of Ireland. The service was established in 2000. Over the years there have been changes in the landscape of service provision, (in terms of: legislation; service configuration and provision; changes in the personnel of the assessment team, and among referring agents). During the existence of the service, there has been an apparently unlimited range of reasons for referral, with a large number of referrals lacking clear, specifically, stated reasons, (rather being stated in the form of a list, or history of problems within a family unit, ort within a child/adolescent). This mixed methods evaluation examines archival assessment Report records for the first 10 years of service operation. Data have been managed using MaxQDA qualitative analysis software. Quantitative analysis of information about all completed assessments for the first ten years of operation of the service is undertaken, with qualitative content analysis of a smaller sample of electronic records from five selected annual cohorts. I have discussed how findings from the research have supported the design, development, and implementation of a new model for practice within the service.
