Abstract:
The Victoria and Albert Museum, itself an archive of material culture, houses several collections of archival records. The Museum’s Registered Papers are divided between the Museum itself, which holds those papers relating to objects in the Museum, and the Public Record Office, where papers relating to Museum buildings and administration can be found; all papers produced since 1984 are to be housed together in a newly established V & A Archive. The quality of the archive of Registered Papers is uneven due to the lack of a controlling and unifying policy; this, and questions of conservation and administration, are being addressed as part of the current restructuring of the Museum. For the same reason the archives of the different Departments, though important, vary considerably not only in content but also in their organisation. The National Art Library, part of the V & A, includes archival collections of ephemera, comprising examples of printing and graphic design, and of manuscripts, including artists’ papers; it also includes the Archive of Art and Design, founded in 1978 to avoid the splitting up of significant archives between the Museum’s Departments.

Abstract:
The archive is a time machine that actively creates ways of accessing individual or collective experiences. Digital archives, in particular, such as the Web Museum anticipate an open and free access to memories even though they are not merely a representation of events but a field in which we can surpass the informativity of events in order to strengthen our experience of the (unlived) past and also the future. We are not building it to remember or understand the past but to think the future. The archive should be guided by the logic of distribution not the logic of accumulation.

Abstract:
The Andijan earthquake of 1902, as the brightest and most catastrophic seismic event of the early 20th century, has been studied for 120 years. Discovered in D.N. Anuchin’s photo archive (the Earth Science Museum of Moscow State University), a series of photo studies (and accompanying information for them) made by the famous researcher S.A. Melik-Sarkisyan immediately after the Andijan disaster, can be considered as the most complete, authentic and objective visual series of primary photographic documentation of the consequences of the earthquake. High-quality photographs capture urban buildings of residential (both Russian and native types), religious, military, transport and other purposes, changes in their structures and destruction are traced in detail. More negative consequences of the earthquake are noted for residential buildings in the «native» part of the city, destroyed almost to the ground due to poor-quality building materials and design flaws.

Abstract:
As a publicity slogan, this ranks amongst the best: short, to the point and accurate! On 31 May 2007 the flagship development of Shetland's Museum and Archive received its royal opening. Appropriately enough, Her Majesty the Queen of Norway takes primacy over Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay, not only following protocol in such matters, but reflecting Shetland's close links with their Scandinavian neighbours. Located on the last remaining area of original 19th century dock in Lerwick, the capital of Shetland, this energetic new building with sail-shaped extension, sits comfortably adjacent to the red painted and timber buildings which are more reminiscent of Faroese architecture than those found elsewhere in the British Isles. Incorporating also old boat sheds which will enable visitors to see the boatmen as they restore the traditional boats, many of which reflect original Norse forms, this development is both high quality and award-winning for its sustainable architecture. The culmination of eight years of planning, and funded by a consortium of Heritage Lottery, Shetland Islands Council and Shetland Amenity Trust funds in excess of 10 million pounds, the museum provides a heritage hub for visitors to the islands and locals alike.

Abstract:
The aim of the paper is to present the Museum of Vernacular Architecture of western Serbia and eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina. Documentation was collected by means of fieldwork and in historical archives. Part of the material was published in scientific journals. It is necessary to present the concept of the Museum, and each of the planned units. This paper presents a group with mountain dwellings and watermills. The first part is composed of several buildings that represent different types of structures. The structure, at the same time, shows the development of the building type. The group consists of two huts, two log cabins, the half-timbered building structure, a fenced garden, and a fenced haystack. The group with watermills consists of buildings on the stream, buildings in the middle flow of the rivers, and watermills of the lower flow of the river. Description of the structure, method of construction, and object function is given for each of the buildings.

Abstract:
<p>The paper deals with an ongoing research activity for developing a Building Information Model (BIM) for the facility and collections management of museums. The BIM success lies not only in its application for the design and construction of buildings but also because it helps the information management of a building throughout its life cycle. Compared to other activities, in museums management, the container/content relationship is essential for the preventive conservation of artworks, according to national and international guidelines. Then, an effective BIM-based museum information system linked to external databases (called M-BIM) should include also the art collections for managing information regarding both the building and artworks by 3D objects handling. This facilitates the management of the procedures prescribed by international best practices (as the facility and conservation reports set up for the loan of artworks) or by Italian regulations (as to check the compliance of a museum with the minimum standards or to archive renovations and temporary exhibitions). The proposed methodology has been tested on the Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze (Florence, Italy), situated in a complex heritage building. Starting from data acquired during a laser scanner survey carried out in 2011, a HBIM of the whole building has been created. Then, the sculptures and paintings of a consistent part of the museum have been modelled with different approaches and inserted as BIM objects. Artworks instances include 3D geometry and physical data (dimensions, materials, weight, etc.), other data are obtained from links to already existing external catalogues. A database conceptual model has been formalised, according to INSPIRE Consolidated Unified Modelling Language (UML) of the INSPIRE Directive, with the aim to maintain the independence of the BIM approach but improving data connection with other databases and sources.</p><p><strong>Highlights:</strong></p><ul><li><p>A holistic information management system for museums (M-BIM) is proposed, including both information on the building and the collections.</p></li><li><p>International and Italian guidelines, and best practices on museums management are compared.</p></li><li><p>The Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze is used as a case study for testing the application of M-BIM on a heritage building.</p></li></ul>

Abstract:
This thesis is an exercise in responsibility regarding my actions as an architect. It is based upon the belief that architecture is a product conveying culture. While architecture can convey culture, it also has the potential to shape and facilitate change q in culture. Therefore, one can view the architect as more than a technician, making architecture stand and work properly, or an artist, concerned with the aesthetic/architectonic qualities of architecture, but rather as an active entity who can both convey and change cultural values through the built environment. The struggle in this thesis regarding responsibility has been to make my role more than an active entity in culture, but a consciously active entity in culture. Since I have long viewed culture as a political product and one's existence in culture as a political act, then one’s responsibility as an architect could be to make architecture as the conscious embodiment of a political ideology. For me, feminism is the political ideology, and Liberative Architecture is the conscious embodiment.

Abstract:
How could a contemporary archive in an art institution be organized, what can or should its parameters be? In recent years archiving has become an important subject for museums and galleries as they consider and organize the documentation and accessibility of their past activities and exhibitions. The article deals with the Fundació Antoní Tàpies in Barcelona and its special programmes to engage visitors in working with archive material in the museum space. The institutional framework developed at the Fundació includes the activation of different visitor groups, the establishing of online tools and the creation of new exhibitions based on archive material. These aspects aim at an open access to the archive for the public.

Abstract:
Between the National Gallery of Art and the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C., the National Museum of Film and Photography design thesis explores issues of architecture at a scale of cultural significance. This thesis is the architectural manifestation of a museum as a research institution, separate from, yet contributing to an educational mission. It is inspired by the thin line between the two worlds, the public museum and the unseen, though often larger, private archive. In this thesis, a home for a treasury of artifacts was designed, so that they might be experienced, and for their intrinsic value. This design thesis explores the role of context, scale, and geometry in a building for the National Mall, as well as the critical requirements and specialized program of a museum. The orthogonal and radial geometry of the city are echoed in the plan. The building program, as well as the physical opportunities of the site, led to the form of the building. The simultaneous cycles of the artifact, the visitor, and the worker, and how they related to the role and amount of natural light also contributed to the form. The thesis is also developed based on the relationship between an object or a film, and a viewer.

This Chapter draws on literature on memory and history to analyze how the archive operates as a memory laboratory facilitating the (re-)creation and transmission of different types of memories, from personal to collective, from primary to secondary. Drawing from literature on Embodied Simulation Theory, the Chapter also shows that archives can give us direct access to the world of others. Crucially, the Chapter shows that after the Second World War we have become increasingly aware of our roles as witnesses. A temporal framework based on literature drawn from anthropology, geography and human computer interaction on mapping and map-making is then used to facilitate the design of mixed reality environments. The case studies for this chapter include The Jewish Museum in Berlin; the archiving tool CloudPad; and the trail building tool Placeify.

Abstract:
Relative humidity and temperature control is key in museums, galleries, libraries and archives. Normally constant volume (CV) air handling units (AHUs) with reheat coils are applied in these buildings. Setting a low supply air temperature limits the highest humidity level; however, reheat coils have to be used to maintain space temperature due to constant supply airflow. As a result, simultaneous heating and cooling exists with excessive energy consumption. It is well known that variable air volume (VAV) technologies can reduce simultaneous heating and cooling as well as fan power. This paper presents the detail VAV system retrofit for the existing CV system, control sequence development and system performance evaluation in a museum facility at Omaha, Nebraska. Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) were installed for the supply fan on the AHUs. Space humidity and temperature, heating and cooling energy consumption, and fan power were measured. The measurements showed that the space humidity and temperature was maintained within the required range under VAV operation while the reheat consumption was reduced by up to 85% and the fan power consumption was reduced by 90% under partial cooling loads.

Abstract:
The role of the common digital space of scientific knowledge (CDSSK) in the development of educational technologies is considered. CDSSK is implemented by a number of Russian organizations as an information and technological environment, support for scientific research, education, popularization of science and preservation of scientific heritage. The structure of the CDSSK provides general principles for building links between individual components related to school and university education. One of the elements related to education in the structure of the CDSSK is a scientific virtual exhibition. Such an exhibition can be dedicated to both a specific person and a scientific event in general. Virtual exhibitions bring together a variety of resources related to the topic of the project (biographies of scientists, related museum and archival materials, publications, copies of films, interactive multimedia resources). The work presents examples of realized virtual exhibitions used in the educational process. The exhibitions were created on the platform of the Scientific Heritage of Russia digital library.

Hinds, Stuart. "Revealing a Community's Heritage: the Gay and Lesbian Archive of Mid-America." In Kansas LGBTQ Symposium. Fort Hays State University, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.58809/wtob5998.

Full text
Abstract:
The Gay and Lesbian Archive of Mid-America (GLAMA) was founded in 2009 to collect, preserve, and make accessible the documents and artifacts that reflect the histories of the LGBTQ communities in the Kansas City region. Originally a partnership between the University of Missouri – Kansas City Special Collections and Archives Division, the Kansas City Museum, and the Jackson County Historical Society, by 2014 two of the partners retreated from the project and it has been solely an initiative at UMKC since. GLAMA has been wildly successful in many respects – response from community donors; interest on the part of student, faculty, and community researchers; and uncovering a previously hidden history of the region. This presentation will focus on the evolution of GLAMA, resources available to users, and public-facing projects that have emerged from the collections.

Martin, Kathi, Nick Jushchyshyn, and Claire King. Christian Lacroix Evening gown c.1990. Drexel Digital Museum, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.17918/wq7d-mc48.

Full text
Abstract:
The URL links to a website page in the Drexel Digital Museum (DDM) fashion image archive containing a 3D interactive panorama of an evening gown by French fashion designer Christian Lacroix with related text. This evening gown by Christian Lacroix is from his Fall 1990 collection. It is constructed from silk plain weave, printed with an abstract motif in the bright, deep colors of the local costumes of Lacroix's native Arles, France; and embellished with diamanté and insets of handkerchief edged silk chiffon. Ruffles of pleated silk organza in a neutral bird feather print and also finished with a handkerchief edge, accentuate the asymmetrical draping of the gown. Ruching, controlled by internal drawstrings and ties, creates volume and a slight pouf, a nod to 'le pouf' silhouette Lacroix popularized in his collection for Patou in 1986. Decorative boning on the front of the bodice reflects Lacroix's early education as a costume historian and his sartorial reinterpretation of historic corsets. It is from the private collection of Mari Shaw. The panorama is an HTML5 formatted version of an ultra-high resolution ObjectVR created from stitched tiles captured with GigaPan technology. It is representative the ongoing research of the DDM, an international, interdisciplinary group of researchers focused on production, conservation and dissemination of new media for exhibition of historic fashion.

Kerrigan, Susan, Phillip McIntyre, and Marion McCutcheon. Australian Cultural and Creative Activity: A Population and Hotspot Analysis: Ballarat. Queensland University of Technology, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5204/rep.eprints.206963.

Full text
Abstract:
Description Ballarat sits on Wathaurong land and is located at the crossroads of four main Victorian highways. A number of State agencies are located here to support and build entrepreneurial activity in the region. The Ballarat Technology Park, located some way out of the heart of the city at the Mount Helen campus of Federation University, is an attempt to expand and diversify the technology and innovation sector in the region. This university also has a high profile presence in the city occupying part of a historically endowed precinct in the city centre. Because of the wise preservation and maintenance of its heritage listed buildings by the local council, Ballarat has been used as the location for a significant set of feature films, documentaries and television series bringing work to local crews and suppliers. With numerous festivals playing to the cities strengths many creative embeddeds and performing artists take advantage of employment in facilities such as the Museum of Australian Democracy at Eureka. The city has its share of start-ups, as well as advertising, design and architectural firms. The city is noted for its museums, its many theatres and art galleries. All major national networks service the TV and radio sector here while community radio is strong and growing.

Brophy, Kenny, and Alison Sheridan, eds. Neolithic Scotland: ScARF Panel Report. Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, June 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.9750/scarf.06.2012.196.

Full text
Abstract:
The main recommendations of the Panel report can be summarised as follows: The Overall Picture: more needs to be understood about the process of acculturation of indigenous communities; about the Atlantic, Breton strand of Neolithisation; about the ‘how and why’ of the spread of Grooved Ware use and its associated practices and traditions; and about reactions to Continental Beaker novelties which appeared from the 25th century. The Detailed Picture: Our understanding of developments in different parts of Scotland is very uneven, with Shetland and the north-west mainland being in particular need of targeted research. Also, here and elsewhere in Scotland, the chronology of developments needs to be clarified, especially as regards developments in the Hebrides. Lifeways and Lifestyles: Research needs to be directed towards filling the substantial gaps in our understanding of: i) subsistence strategies; ii) landscape use (including issues of population size and distribution); iii) environmental change and its consequences – and in particular issues of sea level rise, peat formation and woodland regeneration; and iv) the nature and organisation of the places where people lived; and to track changes over time in all of these. Material Culture and Use of Resources: In addition to fine-tuning our characterisation of material culture and resource use (and its changes over the course of the Neolithic), we need to apply a wider range of analytical approaches in order to discover more about manufacture and use. Some basic questions still need to be addressed (e.g. the chronology of felsite use in Shetland; what kind of pottery was in use, c 3000–2500, in areas where Grooved Ware was not used, etc.) and are outlined in the relevant section of the document. Our knowledge of organic artefacts is very limited, so research in waterlogged contexts is desirable. Identity, Society, Belief Systems: Basic questions about the organisation of society need to be addressed: are we dealing with communities that started out as egalitarian, but (in some regions) became socially differentiated? Can we identify acculturated indigenous people? How much mobility, and what kind of mobility, was there at different times during the Neolithic? And our chronology of certain monument types and key sites (including the Ring of Brodgar, despite its recent excavation) requires to be clarified, especially since we now know that certain types of monument (including Clava cairns) were not built during the Neolithic. The way in which certain types of site (e.g. large palisaded enclosures) were used remains to be clarified. Research and methodological issues: There is still much ignorance of the results of past and current research, so more effective means of dissemination are required. Basic inventory information (e.g. the Scottish Human Remains Database) needs to be compiled, and Canmore and museum database information needs to be updated and expanded – and, where not already available online, placed online, preferably with a Scottish Neolithic e-hub that directs the enquirer to all the available sources of information. The Historic Scotland on-line radiocarbon date inventory needs to be resurrected and kept up to date. Under-used resources, including the rich aerial photography archive in the NMRS, need to have their potential fully exploited. Multi-disciplinary, collaborative research (and the application of GIS modelling to spatial data in order to process the results) is vital if we are to escape from the current ‘silo’ approach and address key research questions from a range of perspectives; and awareness of relevant research outside Scotland is essential if we are to avoid reinventing the wheel. Our perspective needs to encompass multi-scale approaches, so that ScARF Neolithic Panel Report iv developments within Scotland can be understood at a local, regional and wider level. Most importantly, the right questions need to be framed, and the right research strategies need to be developed, in order to extract the maximum amount of information about the Scottish Neolithic.
