This thesis looks at the problem of border delineations and walls within a modern context and proposes the use of borders for functions supplementary to border control and security – such as local commerce, cultural spaces, tourism, hospitality, and public gathering places. Border delineations and walls have been used to protect cities and towns throughout history. In the present age of modern surveillance and advanced military technology however, physical walls have much less significance for the protection of present-day states and nations and have become artifacts of mostly symbolic significance. In an increasingly connected world with the potential for becoming more compassionate, the symbolic significance of the border wall, barrier, and delineation demands to be reassessed and reapproached. This opens the possibility of designing a new binational border typology with functions of business, tourism, cultural education, hospitality, and public assembly that can mutually benefit bordering regions. Spatial justice involves the fair and equitable distribution within a space of resources and opportunities. The site of this thesis is the 1949 Armistice Agreement, or Green Line, on the perimeter of the West Bank of Palestine – a prolonged border conflict of our time and a powerful example of spatial injustice. Through a combination of ancient and modern materials, this thesis explores the potential of hospitality through the design of a roadside inn to recognize the history of its place and create a physical and symbolic bridge for future cooperation. In addition to lodging for travelers, the project's program, or scope of work, includes a museum, artist workshops, dining areas, gift shops, and gathering spaces. Straddling the Green Line along the Dead Sea shoreline, it is designed to carry the memory of the land, but also to symbolize a future that joins divided communities.

Full textAn analysis of multi-beam echo sounder, sub-bottom profiler (Chirp) and multichannel seismic, highligths the present-day sedimentary dynamics and the Neogene-Quaternary architectural and stratigraphicevolution along the northwestern leeward margin of the Great Bahama Bank. The morpho-bathymetric analysis reveals an aragonite mud-dominated slope, and a broad spectrum ofsedimentary structures, related to various hydrodynamic processes. The density cascading currents associatedwith tidal currents and prevailing easterly winds correspond to the dominant transport mechanisms operatingalong the margin. The Bimini area displays a short and steep slope, stabilized at shelf edge by rimmed reefalbarrier, which constrains the off-bank export of materials. The stratigraphic architecture shows a complex evolution of the slope during the Neogene. The end ofthe Paleogene is marked by a continuous aggrading slope detached from the shelf by a fault escarpment. It passesinto a low angle slope-apron attached to the platform in the Miocene, and ends with an accretionary system witha steepened slope in the Pleistocene. Although the slope deposits are mud-dominated, they show rapid lateralvariations (< 30 km) from South to North throughout the Neogene with the establishment of turbidite aprons, debrite layers and large Mass Transport Complexes. These facies interact since the Langhian with the SantarenDrift which gradually extends and migrates along the slope until today. The maximum extent of the drift occursduring the upper Pliocene and coincides with a global oceanographic reorganization and major climate changesin the northern hemisphere, related to the closure of the Central American Seaway

Full textThis study focuses on the architectures and the sedimentary dynamic of a carbonate slope located on the northern part of Little Bahama Bank (Bahamas) using a dataset composed of multibeam echo sounder, subbottom profiler (Chirp) and High-Resolution (HR) multichannel seismic collected during the Carambar 1cruise (2010). A morpho-sedimentary surface analysis defines the physiographic domains and the architectural elements of the slope and investigates the spatial distribution of sediments in the context of the current sea-level highstand. It reveals a slope dominated by periplatform ooze with several levels of induration and incised by numerous slides and submarine canyons. The spatial variability of off-bank transport, combined with the lateral variability of the Antilles Current intensity, are at the origin of a morphological evolution from west to east in the study area. In the western part, the slope is around twice as large as the eastern part and can be considered as a prograding system. The eastern slope is marked by bypass processes. Indeed, numerous submarine canyons are visible on the seafloor and are connected to several shallow distributary furrows feeding confined depositional areas. An integrated study allows a high resolution characterisation of slides and submarines canyons and enables us to propose a model of formation. These architectural elements are initiated by intra-slope destabilisations and their evolution is controlled by phases of retrogressive erosion, pelagic sedimentation and muddy gravity flows. Finally, a seismo-stratigraphic analysis allow to reconstitutethe tectonic and sedimentary evolution of the slope since the Albian to the present-day by establishing a link with the geodynamic context of Caraïbes, relative sea-level changes and the carbonate production on the platform

The results are reduced costs and exciting new functionality, such as better situational awareness for mission conduct and range safety. Spatial and temporal domains are harnessed as aggressively as the frequency domain to enable denser spectral utilization and other exciting benefits. The original purpose of this investigation was to develop streambank erosion prediction curves for Northeast Kansas streams. Rosgen's (2001, 2006) methods were employed and eighteen study banks were measured and monitored over a four-year period, summer 2007 through summer 2010. At each study bank, a toe pin and two to three bank pins were set at a recorded longitudinal profile station of the stream. Vertical and horizontal measures from the toe pin to the bank face were taken each summer, 2007 as the baseline measure and 2008 - 2010 as bank change years. Bank profiles were overlaid to gain insight into bank area lost or gained due to erosional or depositional processes. A Bank Erosion Hazard Index (BEHI) and Near Bank Stress (NBS) combination rating was assessed and calculated for each study bank during the initial survey of 2007. The streambanks experienced varied erosion rates for similar BEHI/NBS combinations producing R2 values from 0.43 as the High/Very High BEHI rating and 0.80 as the Moderate BEHI rating. In addition, Moderate BEHI ratings provided higher erosion rates than the High/Very High BEHI rating and curves intersected at lower NBS ratings, suggesting a discrepancy in the fit of the model used in the Northeast Kansas region and conditions. In this light, modification of the BEHI model was evaluated and variables were assessed in the model for additional influence exerted in the Northeast Kansas region. Vegetation seemed to provide the most influence to bank resistance and was more closely evaluated. Banks with and without woody riparian vegetation were then plotted against BEHI and NBS values, as banks lacking woody vegetation eroded at higher rates. This study's findings can allow us to calibrate the BEHI model according to woody vegetation occurrence levels along streambanks in the Black Vermillion watershed. Modifications regarding vegetation occurrence of the BEHI model was completed and the results of these modifications generated R2 values of 0.78 for High/Very High BEHI and 0.82 for Moderate BEHI ratings. High/Very High ratings provided higher predicted erosion rates than Moderate ratings, while the curve slopes did not intersect at lower NBS ratings.

This thesis chronicles a design process of a chapel in Back Bay, Boston. The first three sections record a juxtaposition of short studies and concept designs while the last focuses on the design development of the chapel alone. Heaviness and lightness are the inspiration for this thesis. I have come to understand the words less in terms of their conventional meanings and more of a dialogue between ranges of architectural forms which complement one another. An experience of a place can be enhanced by thoughtful interplay of these two qualities. Through the specific site and story can these qualities be deployed in a meaningful manner.

This thesis embraces the leftover spaces along the back alleyways and turns them into fronts. It proposes inhabitation of spaces below, above and in-between the warehouses through strategic and programmatically specific engagement. As such this project aims to devise a system that integrates both physical and sociological urban fractures. The site is the Los Angeles Fashion District. It is a place of constant transformation; with its evolving fashion trends, new techniques of production, a changing workforce and new buildings. Yet, despite all the sociological and technological changes, the apparel industry still remains labor intensive. Furthermore, the LA Fashion District concentrates the large number of recent immigrants who are mostly undereducated or uneducated. In response to this situation, I am proposing the School for Apparel Industry Workers. Modeled based on current education facilities for adult immigrants, it provides learning opportunities to the workers at their workplace. The school also acts as an architectural connector. It creates mutual relationships among buildings in the alleyways. Pleating, an apparel industry technique, is employed here as an architectural strategy to develop the system of the project that establish physical and sociological connections. It is also a tool in the organization of school programs as well as a technical solution in appropriating existing structures. Its structural and spatial flexibility exploits the diverse shapes extant in existing structures, providing both visual and physical connections between workplace and learning, while fostering greater acceptance and knowledge of immigrants in the community at large. Key words: immigrant, apparel industry, informality, school for immigrant workers, infill, pleat

This thesis is a study of the relationship between continuity and change. It's premise is the idea that architecture can be receptive to the need for growth and change while still being rooted to the continuity of its relative setting or community. Accordingly, this is an exploration of how a building can represent the continuity or associative identity of a community. The process will be to look for positive, place-making elements, or patterns, within the context and community. By working with an appropriate range of uses, sizes and forms from within the community, I hope to be able to generate a sense of meaningful space and form, or 'place.' I will be looking for ways to enrich a place within it's community - to give it meaning for those who use and experience it. The basic question is how can we conform to an existing context, yet still accommodate the need for change, and to advance our understanding of our place in the world. The design for an artists' community will be set at the edge of Boston's Back Bay, an architecturally rich and clearly defined community. The design of a small community within a larger community will enable me to focus on the activities, spatial qualities and social patterns that are essential for inducing a sense of place. Ideally, the artists' community should become a microcosm of the larger community - a place where a diverse range of people and activities can combine to create a rich environment with continually changing social relationships and the potential to reinforce the total form of the community, while still allowing different yet similar uses. Design is an exploration of the possible, an awakening to the wisdom of the world to which we all aspire. It is the literal reflection of the ways by which we relate to our universe. In other words, it should reveal our greatest potential, reflect our highest hopes and dreams and increase our understanding of where and how we are in a particular place and time.

The donning of camouflage gear by military forces is uniformly understood to be an attempt to dissolve into a background matrix in order to deceive an enemy in combat, or in a combat simulation. This thesis examines the landscape of Vieques, Puerto Rico, to disprove such notion and move towards proving the opposite: that the military assembled the background matrix according to its own set of interests. Through different communication channels and agents, the military arranges the retrospective gaze into the landscape, recasting the past in the service of its future stratagems. The military communicates to visitors that they gaze at original, primeval nature, when in fact it is a successional vegetation misrepresented as primordial. This scenography proves nearly unquestionable when it is adopted by corporate tourism marketing at the end of the 20th century, but does not appeal to the leisure audience only. It also seduces all those that opposed the military, perpetuating an idea of Vieques without people in the process.

This thesis is intended as a continuation of an MIT design studio. The class proposed an alternative approach to building in the city. It seeks to address some of the following issues: continuity, collective form, range of sizes, territoriality, power, and context. A design exploration is undertaken utilizing this approach on a site in the Back Bay of Boston. The work is organized into five parts: The introduction begins with an overview of the approach. Goals are stated which it seeks to attain: decentralization of control, range of sizes, reduced construction costs, clarity in expression of building parts, vertical zoning, and adaptability. Towards the realization of these goals, some working assumptions are identified: The construction of the building will be divided into two layers. First, an infrastructure that will provide the primary structure, public access and utilities. Second, zones of approximately five thousand square feet that are allowed to develop independent of the infrastructure will provide the infill partitions, internal access, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical service as required by the occupants. The section continues with a comparison of the approach to a building currently under construction on the thesis site. Documentation of a previous design exploration that utilized the same approach is included. The section concludes with an overview of the organization of the thesis document. Part two looks at the Back Bay of Boston, the site of the design exploration. Its beginning as a land fill of the original tidal basin is discussed. The lot sizes and various building types are documented along with zoning ordinances. Finally, the specific site is illustrated and discussed along with its adjacent context. Part three begins the initial design exploration with the introduction of the structural system. A diagram for the site is evolved from an original Back Bay plan type for this size site. The first layer of construction or 'infrastructure' is illustrated and then tested by a group of students. A discussion of problems identified by the students and further testing by the author concludes this section. Part four seeks to address some of the problems uncovered by the testing done in part three. A new structural system emerges and is deployed through the use of a grid of zones and margins. Documentation of the resultant changes in the infrastructure concludes this part. Part five contains the refinement of the design which is illustrated with drawings and a model. Some suggestions are offered for modification of the approach as it relates to a site of this size. Finally, a discussion follows which outlines the original issues of the "alternate approach" and how they were addressed by the design.

This thesis aims at establishing a set of rules for the design of a house type in Boston's Back Bay. The theory of which this study is based on is built-form theory which undertake the morphological development of the spatial arrangement. The house type of Back Bay conceived as a set of rules that can prescribed formal relations among chosen elements at the block and building levels. The rules are applied for generating a house type. Type exists in the social body, which consolidates social agreement and therefore is closely related to the sharing of images. Rules can be used for describing the images in terms of physical forms and communicate the idea of type with architects and people who live the society. Also, they serve reference criteria and design guidelines, as control tools of design in our physical environment. This study consists of three major parts: Formulating design rules for urban block, facade and floor plan. For each part, a series of analyses are adopted: (1) block level: physical system and spatial system; (2) facade system: facade decomposition, hierarchical organization and generative rule system; (3) floor plan system: floor plan structure. A set of dimensional system are also generated for the test of design rules.

This thesis begins with the critique of the current situation of detached, privately owned, multi-family residences and seeks alternative solutions at both the broad scale of the block, and at the scale of the spaces directly adjacent to the interiors. Originally these types of residences were based on the block layout and ideals of equal light, access, and air that were formed at the turn of the century for single family homes. Some of the results of this "equality", and its direct application to multi-family residences, are equally unusable side yards, an abundance of pavement and curb cuts for individual driveways, "private" backyards that all abut, and views from the interiors and porches directly to neighbors' interiors and porches. Though residents might know some of their neighbors directly next door, the feeling of a larger sense of community is lost with in the repetitiveness of the tract block. The intention of th is thesis, based on the assumption that the residents have a variety of needs, and that all of the spaces should not be "equal", is to design a range of outside territories from private to communal. What is an alternative block arrangement that will foster community interaction and provide the framework for the layout and design of these outdoor spaces? How should outdoor sitting areas, parking spots, entrances, entry paths, etc., be designed to reinforce and provide for these different requirements? A set of design principles for these types of spaces will be derived through a combination of analysis of "successful" spaces, and the redesign of an existing neighborhood/ block in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The crossroads of Flatbush (often called The Junction) is a five point intersection of vehicular and pedestrian traffic. A crossroad where ethnic groups step beyond subtle neighborhood boundaries and merge to use public services and shops. Steel gates roll up at the beginning of each day and pushcarts slip onto the sidewalk. Pedestrians jostle vendors and vendors strike bargains. Senior citizens seeks unlit corners after tracing the sun's path. Night shift workers yawn while gradually adjusting to the morning rush. High school and college students dart in and out of donut shops as they make their way to classes. The electricity emitted from such an urban environment has a lasting effect. It is this energy that I wish to capture in my design exploration for student housing. The development of a physical form that would reflect the vibrancy of The Junction.

The objective of this thesis is to explore the transformation of an existing building type and the application of the support/infill concept in a new context. For this purpose, a traditional Back Bay residential form in Boston has been selected. The study has been carried out in two parts: (I) Part One consists of an observational study of the existing context. This involved an analysis on the levels of urban structure, urban tissue and lot unit. The rules of the original Back Bay house type are identified in the last section. (II) The second part comprises a design study based on the observed context by inserting new constraints. To discover possible floor-plan variations within the type, the support/ infill distinction has been applied. Furthermore, the application of the modified type to irregular lot forms is studied. At the end of the thesis unresolved issues are discussed..
