Abstract:
Since 1970, the architectural analysis of woody plants has given much information about structural and functional organization of tree crowns, their development, and reiteration patterns. In this study, we have extended this method to tree root systems. We describe the whole architecture of three species and we compare their root system and crown architectural patterns. Key words: architecture, tree, root system, crown, whole plant.

Abstract:
Qingdao, as a city with a colonial history, has numerous architectures that combine traditional Chinese architectural style and Western architectural style. One of the most distinctive types of architecture is the church. Churches have significant mental support functions as well as their function as shelters. They are symbols of the city, and valuable for the city to present its architectural scene. This article wishes to state the backgrounds and history of Catholicism and Protestantism; compare the differences in external spaces, internal spaces, decorations, and volume of Qingdao catholic church and Qingdao Christian church to analyze the architectural differences based on different religious backgrounds; emphasize the characteristics and connotations for churches. Studying church architecture can reveal the creativity and technical proficiency of ancient architects and craftsmen. Church architecture encompasses knowledge and skills from various fields, including structural engineering, sculpture, painting, and decoration. Such research contributes to the advancement of architectural design and engineering technology. Church architecture is a reflection of human creativity and cultural traditions, and it holds significant importance for the study and preservation of cultural heritage.

Abstract:
Real-time image processing and pattern recognition applications have found a new paradigm in neuromorphic computing systems. In this paper, we quantitatively compare neuromorphic architecture performance to that of conventional computing techniques. We study processing speed, accuracy, and energy usage for diverse image processing jobs using a controlled experimental methodology. The outcomes highlight the advantages of the Neuromorphic architecture, which is distinguished by quicker processing times and greater precision. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of event-driven spiking neural networks and are consistent with earlier studies. Comparisons with hybrid architectures highlight the Neuromorphic architecture's strength as a stand-alone system and point to simpler implementations. However, issues with accuracy fluctuation and the requirement for scalability continue, emphasizing areas for more study. The energy economy of neuromorphic architectures makes them essential parts of real-time image processing and pattern recognition as the field develops.

Abstract:
Deep learning is a branch of machine learning with many highly successful applications. One application of deep learning is image classification using the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) algorithm. Large image data is required to classify images with CNN to obtain satisfactory training results. However, this can be overcome with transfer learning architectural models, even with small image data. With transfer learning, the success rate of a model is likely to be higher. Since there are many transfer learning architecture models, it is necessary to compare each model's performance results to find the best-performing architecture. In this study, we conducted three experiments on different datasets to train models with various transfer learning architectures. We then performed a comprehensive comparative analysis for each experiment. The result is that the DenseNet-121 architecture is the best transfer learning architecture model for various datasets.

Abstract:
Power consumption is very critical for portable video applications. During compression, the motion estimation unit consumes the largest portion of power since it performs a huge amount of computation. Different low power architectures for implementing the full-search block-matching (FSBM) motion estimation are discussed. Also, architectural enhancements to further reduce the power consumed during FSBM motion estimation without sacrificing throughput or optimality are presented. The proposed approach achieves these power savings by disabling portions of the architecture that perform unnecessary computations. A comparison between the different architectures including our enhancements and others is presented using simulation and analytical analysis. Different benchmarks are used to test and compare the discussed architectures. Analytical and simulation results show the effectiveness of the enhancements.

Abstract:
In this paper, we present and compare efficient low-power hardware architectures for accelerating the Packet Data Convergence Protocol (PDCP) in LTE and LTE-Advanced mobile terminals. Specifically, our work proposes the design of two cores: a crypto engine for the Evolved Packet System Encryption Algorithm (128-EEA2) that is based on the AES cipher and a coprocessor for the Least Significant Bit (LSB) encoding mechanism of the Robust Header Compression (ROHC) algorithm. With respect to the former, first we propose a reference architecture, which reflects a basic implementation of the algorithm, then we identify area and power bottle-necks in the design and finally we introduce and compare several architectures targeting the most power-consuming operations. With respect to the LSB coprocessor, we propose a novel implementation based on a one-hot encoding, thereby reducing hardware’s logic switching rate. Architectural hardware analysis is performed using Faraday’s 90 nm standard-cell library. The obtained results, when compared against the reference architecture, show that these novel architectures achieve significant improvements, namely, 25% in area and 35% in power consumption for the 128-EEA2 crypto-core, and even more important reductions are seen for the LSB coprocessor, that is, 36% in area and 50% in power consumption.

Abstract:

This paper links the scientific fields of electrical energy storage with that of managerial performance. It first presents the evaluation method of the efficient framework for quality management (EFQM) model, based on the criteria set interested in which way the management of an organisation acts on the results. An example fulfilling the requirements for an EFQM assessment is also summarised: the search for a high-performance battery internal architecture in order to improve its lifespan. To date, several different architectures, combined with a specific management algorithm, allow to similarly extending the battery lifespan. The method presented here helps to identify which architecture has the best management performance. In addition, it identifies its strengths and main defect.

Abstract:
The scientific approach conducting the present piece of research combines both tradition and innovation; historical continuity on one hand – first of heritage and cultural history – initiated by the first studies on heritage policies and responsible administrations: the “Conseil supérieur des Beaux-arts” and Marie-Claude Genet-Delacroix's thesis, the early museums and the associated heritage effect studied by Dominique Poulot, then continuity of a general history of restoration and the Jean-Michel Léniaud's papers on the “service des Edifices diocésains” and cathedrals, and Françoise Bercé's book on the “Monuments historiques”; innovation on the other hand by focusing here on the question of restoration at work in a comparative study of three gothic cathedrals work sites – Our Lady of Rheims, Our Lady of Laon and Our Lady of Paris – from 1789 to 1914. Intersecting religious history, art history and political history, this research deals with monumental restoration as a political, administrative, technical and aesthetical concept and its application to every ancient monument including gothic cathedrals: but from a concept to its tangible realisation lie numerous actions and professionals (contractors and owners) as well as numerous hindrances and factors that diversify its application and implementation. This study is a comparative analysis of the conditions, programs, modes and technics employed during the 19th century on the three restoration sites

Abstract:
In this work, we analyzed the role, type and character of the large commercial establishment in the formation of the centrality in urban fringe through a relationship with the evolution of the city. We conducted the same analysis on the new town in the outskirts of Seoul. Also, we looked for a comparison between two cities, Paris and Seoul. This work is carried out around three points of view presented below : the evolution of commercial space in the urban mutation of Paris and Seoul; the role of commercial space and peripheral centrality : the case of the new town; the characteristic and evolution of shopping center : the case of Korea. Here are the contents of each part : the first part deals with contents related to the evolution of the commercial space in the urban mutation. Chapter I presents the evolution of commercial space in Paris and Seoul by distinguishing the historical evolution, the evolution of commercial space in the process of modernization, changes in lifestyle and adaptation of urban space in these developments. Chapter II provides the theoretical analysis and the definition relating to the urban center in the process of modernization that leads the development of the center and its periphery and considers the dispersion of the center, the regional distribution of large commercial establishment on the outskirts of the city and the spatial evolution of the peripheral area of Seoul. Then, Chapter III examines the type of shopping center and the nature of urban space, the composition of the commercial space, the changing patterns of consumption and the expansion of commercial equipment. In the second part, we consider the role of commercial space and the peripheral centrality about the new town. Chapter IV discusses the role of commercial space as a key element in the composition of central place in which it distinguished the policy, the spatial character of the central place and the role of the commercial establishment in the composition of the new town. Chapter V deals with content related to the current state of the large commercial establishment, the form of the central place, the state of consumer space, the principles of the urban design and the identity of Ilsan and Bundang new town, located on the outskirts of Seoul. Chapter VI analyzes the architectural characteristics, type, role of large commercial establishment located in the new town and the image of the commercial space as a place of urban activity. In the third part, we consider the characteristics and evolution of the shopping center in Korea. Chapter VII analyzes the evolution of regulations related to commercial urban planning, the evolution and the development of commercial space by giving the definition of various types of sales. Finally, Chapter VIII analyzes the shopping center as a new urban fabric considering their type and character, the nature of the spatial composition and the tendency of the complexity of these Korean institutions

Abstract:
Social science studies of psychiatry have been mainly interested in the social mandate of the psychiatric institution. The polarisation of psychiatry between psychodynamic approaches and biological approaches in the etiology of mental disorders has given rise to public debates but also within the social science to question of the scientific and therapeutic functions of this medical speciality. This thesis proposes to jointly investigate the transformations of contemporary psychiatry, the professional organisation of the psychiatric hospital, the therapeutic function allocated in Prance to the psychiatric hospital and psychiatric practices by comparing the practices of care in two psychiatric wards: one of psychoanalytic orientation, the other referring to psychopharmacology. The thesis plan is organised around a central hypothesis in that the studied wards form some worlds of care which order and organise entities involved in the definition of care according to the primary aim of treatment pursued by each of them. The first part of the thesis focuses on the medical activity with the study of overall medical organisation and the forms of doctor-patient relationships. The second part of the thesis recounts the genealogy of nursing practice in psychiatry. The third part of the thesis analyses worlds of care in action from three boundary objects of psychiatry that are the "framework", the nurses* interviews and the buildings of the psychiatric services

Turbidite systems present both academic and industrial interests since they are archives of environmental conditions and potential oil reservoirs. Among many parameters controlling the sedimentary organization, the continental slope inclination appears to be a major parameter. The analysis of slope inclination’s and these variations on the hydrodynamic of sedimentary flows and thus on turbidite systems architecture is a crucial character for both academic and industrial interests. The Pliocene-Quaternary turbidite systems of the Gulf of Genoa and upper margin of the Ivorian Cretaceous develop on margins with steep slope profiles controlled by tectonic processes and are suitable and complementary items for the Study of turbidite sedimentation in context of abrupt margin. This work is based on the high-resolution analysis of acoustic data (bathymetry, multibeam imaging, seismic THR, sidescan sonar) acquired on the steep margin of the Gulf of Genova (Malisar, Fables, Prism, Gelo) and the analysis of a 3D seismic block on the Ivorian steep margin. Turbidite accumulations of two sites demonstrate particle segregation processes with trapping coarser particles into specific structures such as plunge pools and cyclic steps. The detailed study of these bodies related to hydraulic jump sheds a new light on the continuity of sand bodies in the transition canyon / lobe and allows the designing of a new reservoir model scenario. Further analysis of these two areas of study shows the direct impact of tectonic activity on the architecture of turbidite accumulations by establishing and maintaining a nick area where the phenomenon of hydraulic jump can be maintained over time

Abstract:

Abstract:

The aim of this work is to design an experiment, where client-server systems can be compared. They belong to the group of systems that are called component systems. Client-server systems are difficult to compare, because they are complex. The client-server systems are documented in different ways. Notations in the implementation of them are in different ways. There is a large difference in the communication between the client and server. The architectures between the client-server systems differ also, but they are not totally different. Therefore it is possible to construct an experiment for comparing them. Client-server systems that will be compared are Java RMI, Web Services, CORBA, and Enterprise JavaBeans. We are going to use Java as the programming language. Some of these systems, for example CORBA, can be implemented in other languages. The designed experiment is among other things going to answer how long time is needed to implement a specific application, how fast a specific client-server system is, and how long time is spent for learning about a specific system.

This essay aims to study the particularities of the protection of architectural works in copyright, and more specifically its limits resulting from the nature of the work, in French and Canadian law. The main objective of this research is to demonstrate that there are intrinsic limitations to the protection of architectural works in both French and Canadian copyright law, which therefore differs from the ordinary legislation regarding copyright. Incidentally, this study will lead us to demonstrate that these specificities show nuances from one legal system to another, which reflect the marks of a more fundamental difference between French law and Canadian law in terms of copyright conception. On the one hand, the French conception of “droit d’auteur”, finely personalist and romantic, places the author's person at the heart of the protection by giving him significant prerogatives. On the other hand, Canadian copyright stems mainly from a common law tradition and is thus animated by a more economic and labour-oriented logic which further focuses on the economic exploitation of the work and public interest. This demonstration will be made by studying the qualification of the work, through the notions of originality and counterfeiting, and its intangibility, which is weakened by the confrontation between the moral right of the architect and property right.

Abstract:
This publication provides considerable material for reflection on the subject of Mediterranean Architecture between Heritage and Innovation, demonstrating the wide range of aspects linked to Architectural Technology, in which one is struck by the flexibility of the disciplinary boundaries with regard to the various meanings that can be applied to the concept of resource. Taken together with the previous publications of Osdotta, this consents one to trace the developments in the third level of education at a particularly critical time for the university institution; the emphasis continues to be placed on the crucial issue of supply/demand of research; the situation is compared with other institutions and with the world of production in this sector, in a present-day scenario dominated by ever more rapid and incisive transformations. The main challenges left to be faced are to improve the quality of PhD courses, after due reflection on the immediate and long-term results, whilst defining more precisely the identitary contents of the disciplinary sector.

Abstract:
AbstractThe Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) establishes that Member States (MSs) should define a long-term renovation strategy (LTRS) which shall set out a roadmap with measures and measurable indicators, with a view to the long-term 2050 goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union by 80–95% compared to 1990. The EPBD is currently under review and the European Commission suggests strengthening the LTRSs towards National building renovation plans (NBRPs). NBRPs will be much more complete than LTRSs and will make easier to compare the national decarbonization targets and their progress between MSs since a set of mandatory indicators is being established. On the contrary, this will involve important amount of policy monitoring and evaluation work for MSs. The objective of this chapter is to analyze the indicator frameworks included in the currently in force EPBD and in its on-going revision, in order to identify the most important subjects the MSs should focus their data collection on, so that they can get prepared for the important monitoring and evaluation work they will have to do.

AbstractRecent developments in digital architecture have placed a renewed focus on sustainable architectural materials and the circularity of material systems. Algae has emerged as a promising material for mitigating the effects of climate change due to its ability to absorb large amounts of carbon dioxide. However, the disposal of algal biomass can lead to significant CO2 emissions and air pollution. The upcycling of algae into composite materials can promote circular economies by reducing the demand for petroleum-based products. In this context, this research explores the potential of Ulva algae in creating 3D-printed architectural prototypes based on bio-algorithm. An experimental analysis of the material properties of algae-based plastic is conducted and compared to similar reference products. This study argues for the importance of designing and fabricating these materials at the required scale while leveraging bio-thinking principles to create closed-loop systems and maximize the potential of natural resources.

AbstractThe paper details a 3D to 2D encoding method, which can store complex digital 3D models of architecture within a single image. The proposed encoding works in combination with a point cloud notation and a sequential slicing operation where each slice of points is stored as a single row of pixels in the UV space of a 1024 × 1024 image. The performance of the notation system is compared between a StyleGan2 and existing image editing methods and evaluated through the production of new 3D models of houses with material attributes. The uncovered findings maintain the relatively high level of detail stored through the encoding while allowing for innovative ways of form-finding—producing new and unseen 3d models of architectural houses.

Abstract:
AbstractIn the past few years, more architects and engineers start thinking about the application of machine learning algorithms in the architectural design field such as building facades generation or floor plans generation, etc. However, due to the relatively slow development of 3D machine learning algorithms, 3D architecture form exploration through machine learning is still a difficult issue for architects. As a result, most of these applications are confined to the level of 2D. Based on the state-of-the-art 2D image generation algorithm, also the method of spatial sequence rules, this article proposes a brand-new strategy of encoding, decoding, and form generation between 2D drawings and 3D models, which we name 2D-3D Form Encoding WorkFlow. This method could provide some innovative design possibilities that generate the latent 3D forms between several different architectural styles. Benefited from the 2D network advantages and the image amplification network nested outside the benchmark network, we have significantly expanded the resolution of training results when compared with the existing form-finding algorithm and related achievements in recent years.

AbstractThe rich organic pore spaces of weathered rocks bring inspiration to architectural design. Based on the existing research on the natural formation mechanism of weathered rocks, this paper proposes two algorithms that achieve natural formation mechanism simulation and morphology simulation. Firstly, this study deeply explores the intrinsic characteristics of weathered rocks; secondly, the basic framework of iterative cyclic calculation by multiple weathering forces is built to make the calculation results of 3D point cloud close to the real morphology of weathered rocks; subsequently, this study innovatively introduces a 2D stacked layer algorithm for optimization while maintaining the morphological characteristics; finally, the architecture design application of the optimization algorithm is verified. Compared with the 3D point cloud simulation algorithm, the 2D layered algorithm can greatly reduce the computational time complexity and control the generated space's utilization.

Abstract:
Due to global warming and depletion of fossil fuels, alternative sustainable fuel technology is essential. As a consequence of this need, many automotive original equipment manufacturers have started manufacturing electric vehicles (EVs) as sustainable, zero-emission solution. This paper evaluates different architectures for EV design to establish a preferred architecture. A detailed literature study is outlined to evaluate production and concept proposals of many original equipment manufacturers, student projects, and autonomous electric cars. The different architectural aspects of these designs, such as mechanical and electrical technologies, are discussed. Starting with initial schematics, a theoretical model is developed for each of the EV drive train architectures. The study uses advanced modeling techniques to compare these architectures. Different drive train architectures are compared in the contexts of functionality, operation, manufacturability, and modularity. The preferred architecture was developed using advanced tools such as virtual modeling to establish operational sequences for the components that make up an EV. In addition, product data management software was used as management tool to document changes during the architecture’s development. Recommendations and discussions on a selection of vehicle architectures are detailed along with those for a preferred architecture.

This article introduces a new architecture of spherical parallel robot which significantly extends the workspace when compared to existing architectures. To this end, the singularity locus is studied and the design parameters are chosen so as to confine the singularities to areas already limited by other constraints such as mechanical interferences. First, the architecture of the spherical redundant robot is presented and the Jacobian matrices are derived. Afterwards, the analysis of the singularities is addressed from a geometric point of view, which yields a description of the singularity locus expressed as a function of the architectural parameters. Then, the results are applied to an example set of architectural parameters chosen in order to illustrate the advantages of the redundant architecture over current designs in terms of workspace.

Abstract:
The subject 'Comparative Architecture', framed within a Master's program at UPC (Polytechnic University of Catalonia), proposes the comparison of a series of pairs of images as a learning methodology. Over the course of one semester, students create a set of texts in which they bring out the multiple relationships established between two architectural or artistic works. This sharpens their observation skills, develops critical thinking, and equips them with new project tools. This article presents the background of the comparative method, elaborates on the ideological and methodological foundations of the course, explains the dynamics of the sessions, and showcases the results of the subject. Through this course, students acquire the ability to describe in words the visible certainties or invisible threads that connect two works of diverse origins, conditions, and characteristics, in a didactic approach that allows them to engage with architecture in a different way.

Abstract:
As an emerging field, Automated Machine Learning (AutoML) aims to reduce or eliminate manual operations that require expertise in machine learning. In this paper, a graph-based architecture is employed to represent flexible combinations of ML models, which provides a large searching space compared to tree-based and stacking-based architectures. Based on this, an evolutionary algorithm is proposed to search for the best architecture, where the mutation and heredity operators are the key for architecture evolution. With Bayesian hyper-parameter optimization, the proposed approach can automate the workflow of machine learning. On the PMLB dataset, the proposed approach shows the state-of-the-art performance compared with TPOT, Autostacker, and auto-sklearn. Some of the optimized models are with complex structures which are difficult to obtain in manual design.

Abstract:
As an emerging field, the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) has a myriad of security vulnerabilities that must be addressed to protect system integrity. To stay ahead of novel attacks, cybersecurity professionals are developing new software and systems using machine learning techniques. Neural network architectures improve such systems, including Intrusion Detection System (IDSs), by implementing anomaly detection, which differentiates benign data packets from malicious ones. For an IDS to best predict anomalies, the model is trained on data that is typically pre-processed through normalization and feature selection/reduction. These pre-processing techniques play an important role in training a neural network to optimize its performance. This research studies the impact of applying normalization techniques as a pre-processing step to learning, as used by the IDSs. The impacts of pre-processing techniques play an important role in training neural networks to optimize its performance. This report proposes a Deep Neural Network (DNN) model with two hidden layers for IDS architecture and compares two commonly used normalization pre-processing techniques. Our findings are evaluated using accuracy, Area Under Curve (AUC), Receiver Operator Characteristic (ROC), F-1 Score, and loss. The experimentations demonstrate that Z-Score outperforms no-normalization and the use of Min-Max normalization.

There are genotypic differences in the rate of ethylene production by various root types and in the differential in ethylene production when P treatments are compared. The acceleration in ethylene production with P deficiency increases with time. These findings support the hypothesis that ethylene production may be enhanced by phosphorus deficiency, and that the degree of enhancement varies with genotype. In tomatoes the low-P level did not enhance significantly ethylene production by the roots. Wildtype cultivars and ethylene insensitive mutants behaved similarly in that respect. 2) Characterize the effects of phosphorus availability and ethylene on the architecture of whole root systems. Test the hypothesis that both ethylene and low phosphorus availability modify root architecture. In common bean, the basal roots give rise to a major fraction of the whole root system. Unlike other laterals these roots respond to gravitropic stimulation. Their growth angle determines the proportion of the root length in the shallow layers of the soil. A correlation between ethylene production and basal root angle was found in shallow rooted but not deep-rooted genotypes, indicating that acceleration of ethylene synthesis may account for the change in basal root angle in genotypes demonstrating a plastic response to P availability. Short-time gravitropic response of the tap roots of young bean seedlings was not affected by P level in the nutrient solution. Low phosphorus specifically increases root hair length and root hair density in Arabidopsis. We tested 7 different mutants in ethylene perception and response and in each case, the response to low P was lower than that of the wild-type. The extent of reduction in P response varied among the mutants, but every mutant retained some responsiveness to changes in P concentration. The increase in root hair density was due to the increase in the number of trichoblast cell files under low P and was not mediated by ethylene. Low P did not increase the number of root hairs forming from atrichoblasts. This is in contrast to ethylene treatment, which increased the number of root hairs partly by causing root hairs to form on atrichoblasts. 3) Assess the adaptive value of root architectural plasticity in response to phosphorus availability. A simulation study indicated that genetic variation for root architecture in common bean may be related to adaptation to diverse competitive environments. The fractal dimension of tomato root system was directly correlated with P level.

Abstract:
Architecture of a root system is the expression of the potential of various root types to branch, to grow and to coordinate with other plant organs, under the specific limitations of the environmental conditions. The present investigation has proven the following points. 1) Genotypes with different types of root systems were identified. The growth patterns of their roots and the distribution of laterals along their main axes were recorded. 2) The patterns of development of the root systems of four cotton genotypes, throughout the entire life cycle of the plants, were described, even at such a late stage of development when the total length of the roots exceeded two kilometers. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that an analysis of this type is accomplished. 3) The development of root systems under restrictive soil conditions were compared with those that have developed under the non-restrictive conditions of aeroponics. Results indicate that in the absence of the mechanical impedance of the soil, cotton plants develop single roots that reach the length of 6 m, and have a total root length of 2000 m. Thus, root growth is strongly inhibited by the soil, with some root types being inhibited more than others. 4) One of the important decisions, in constructing an operational root system architecture of mature plants, is the shift of the balance between various root fractions in favor of the very fine roots. 5) Root system architecture is determined, in part, by the sites of initiation of the lateral roots. This is determined genetically by the number of xylem archs and by the totuosity of the stele. Selection for such traits should be sought.

Abstract:
This article analyzes the ways to apply Learning Analytics, Cloud Technologies, and Big Data in the field of education on the international level. This paper provides examples of international analytical researches and cloud technologies used to process the results of those researches. It considers the PISA research methodology and related tools, including the IDB Analyzer application, free R intsvy environment for processing statistical data, and cloud-based web application PISA Data Explorer. The paper justifies the necessity of creating a stand-alone web application that supports Ukrainian localization and provides Ukrainian researchers with rapid access to well-structured PISA data. In particular, such an application should provide for data across the factorial features and indicators applied at the country level and demonstrate the Ukrainian indicators compared to the other countries’ results. This paper includes a description of the application core functionalities, architecture, and technologies used for development. The proposed solution leverages the shiny package available with R environment that allows implementing both the UI and server sides of the application. The technical implementation is a proven solution that allows for simplifying the access to PISA data for Ukrainian researchers and helping them utilize the calculation results on the key features without having to apply tools for processing statistical data.

Abstract:
We present Any-Precision Deep Neural Networks (Any- Precision DNNs), which are trained with a new method that empowers learned DNNs to be flexible in any numerical precision during inference. The same model in runtime can be flexibly and directly set to different bit-width, by trun- cating the least significant bits, to support dynamic speed and accuracy trade-off. When all layers are set to low- bits, we show that the model achieved accuracy compara- ble to dedicated models trained at the same precision. This nice property facilitates flexible deployment of deep learn- ing models in real-world applications, where in practice trade-offs between model accuracy and runtime efficiency are often sought. Previous literature presents solutions to train models at each individual fixed efficiency/accuracy trade-off point. But how to produce a model flexible in runtime precision is largely unexplored. When the demand of efficiency/accuracy trade-off varies from time to time or even dynamically changes in runtime, it is infeasible to re-train models accordingly, and the storage budget may forbid keeping multiple models. Our proposed framework achieves this flexibility without performance degradation. More importantly, we demonstrate that this achievement is agnostic to model architectures. We experimentally validated our method with different deep network backbones (AlexNet-small, Resnet-20, Resnet-50) on different datasets (SVHN, Cifar-10, ImageNet) and observed consistent results.

Abstract:
Foliar delivery of herbicides is a common means for plant management in aquatic environments. Though this technique is decades old, little is known about vegetative spray retention relative to this application method. A more complete understanding of maximizing herbicide retention could lead to improved plant management while simultaneously decreasing pesticide load in aquatic environments. Therefore, outdoor mesocosm experiments were conducted in 2020 to evaluate the effect of adjuvant type on foliar spray retention in waterhyacinth [Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms]. Additionally, the effect of carrier volume on spray retention in waterhyacinth, waterlettuce (Pistia stratiotes L.), and giant salvinia (Salvinia molesta D.S. Mitchell) was documented. Spray deposition did not differ among the nine adjuvants tested; however, spray retention was reduced 6% to 11% when an adjuvant was excluded from the spray solution. The effect of carrier volume on spray retention in waterhyacinth, waterlettuce, and giant salvinia was also investigated. Decreases in spray retention were most sensitive to increased carrier volume in waterhyacinth, followed by giant salvinia and waterlettuce. Among species, spray retention potential, as determined by intercept estimates, was greatest in waterlettuce and giant salvinia regardless of carrier volume. Asymptotes estimates for waterhyacinth, waterlettuce, and giant salvinia were 33%, 46%, and 79% spray retention, respectively. In other words, spray retention was the lowest and remained relatively constant at these values for the high carrier volumes tested (935 and 1,870 L ha⁻¹), which were likely due to the presence of pubescence on leaves and flatter leaf architecture represented by waterlettuce and giant salvinia compared to the glabrous vertical leaves of waterhyacinth. Future research will evaluate these concepts under field condition.

Abstract:
Accurate temperature readings are vital in fire resistance tests, but conventional thermal imagers often lack sufficient resolution, and applying super-resolution algorithms can disrupt the temperature and color correspondence, leading to limited efficiency. To address these issues, a convolutional network tailored for high-temperature scenes is designed for image super-resolution with the internal joint attention sub-residual blocks (JASRB) efficiently integrating channel, spatial attention mechanisms, and convolutional modules. Furthermore, a segmented method is developed for predicting thermal image temperature using color temperature measurements and an interpretable artificial neural network. This approach predicts temperatures in super-resolution thermal images ranging from 400 to 1200°C. Through comparative validation, it is found that the three-neuron neural network approach demonstrates superior prediction accuracy compared to other machine learning methods. The seamlessly combined proposed super-resolution architecture with the temperature measurement method has a predicted RMSE of 20°C for the whole temperature range with over 85% of samples falling within errors of 30°C.
