Full textperception of the cosmos. However, understanding the antique world which is at a "
distance"
both historaiclly and conceptually is not an easy task. In this context, rethinking and reinterpreting the meaning attributed to Yazilikaya, th eopen air sanctuary, can only be achieved by considering the political, architectural and religious aspects together. This study is an attempt to reinterpret the material knowledge by drawing the appropriate limits of this knowledge with a contextual approach.

Full textThis research devoted to Father Eugene Jean Coste follows three orientations. The first aspect is associated to historical circumstance: the diffusion of Catholicism of the Far-East Asia, which was conducted by the western missionaries at the end of XIX century. In spite of two merciless persecutions, the treaty signed in 1886 completely changed the situation. The Catholic Church in Korea was re-established and the Catholic Parish of Myeongdong expanded its community rapidly. Missionaries’ architectural activities that commenced in this period, otherwise, introduced the European culture to Korea. The European-style cathedrals inspired a new aesthetic in the Parish. The second orientation is an architectural perspective: these studies considerably are related to their architectural realizations in the year of 1896 which drew the modernization of Korea. Coste, who was a prosecutor of Paris Foreign Missions Society, assimilated into the principles of the Neo-Gothic architectures and incorporated them in the religious buildings, especially when he supervised the construction of the biggest church in Korea, Seoul Myeongdong Cathedral. The research on the churches initially designed by this French catholic missionary, accordingly, tries to identify modern Korean architectures. In addition, the research could allow readers to discover the various French Neo-Gothic styles in the mission country. Such architectural movements were launched in the intimate relations among Korea, Japan and China. Therefore, Paris Foreign Missions Society’s architectures testify to the history of exchanges with the western culture, taking the economical and practical factors into consideration. The realizations of Father Coste have influenced the concepts of other Korean European-style churches designed by Paris Foreign Missions Society. With the archetype of Father Coste’s architectures, his colleagues, priest-constructors built the churches in the region with the various results of both individual competences and other church communities. In the end, the dissertation studies the conception of religious heritages and the procedure that the architectures of Paris Foreign Missions became heritages in Korea. The concern about heritages remains entirely showing the weakness of historical knowledge and technical limitation. But new idea and technology of the conservation were introduced. The first step was the restoration of Yakhyeon Saint-Joseph Church in 2000. Finally, we will contemplate the applications of Paris Foreign Missions Society’s edifices and the conservations of religious heritages in the same protection zone for the survival of these historical architectures

s METU projects, and to delineate an integrative and multifaceted picture of their political and educational contexts. This picture may serve as a basis for future researches on the institutional and educational histories of METU Faculty of Architecture. It may also help to better understand the contributions of other administrators and instructors -- including First Acting Dean Thomas B. A. Godfrey and Dean Abdullah Kuran -- who played important parts in the formation of the educational direction of the Faculty. Abrams, as a United Nations consultant, paved the way for the foundation of METU Faculty of Architecture by recommending a school of architecture and community planning in Ankara, for the education of professionals competent in responding to the problems caused by rapid industrial expansion and urbanization. Perkins contributed to the foundation process of METU Faculty of Architecture. As the head of the team of experts from the University of Pennsylvania School of Fine Arts, who were sent by the United Nations to Ankara in 1955, he advised the Government of Turkey on &ldquo
the creation of a Faculty of Architecture, a Faculty of City and Regional Planning&rdquo
and two research institutes, as a first step towards an institution of university rank, and with a view to promoting &ldquo
a newer, more practical and modern approach to architecture and urban planning&rdquo
in Turkey. In this dissertation, Abrams&rsquo
s and Perkins&rsquo
s METU projects constitute a starting point for exploring significant themes in the changing political and educational trajectories in America in the mid-twentieth century. The influence of different interpretations of the notions of democracy, individuality and society on technical assistance, urban development policies and architectural education is also investigated. Abrams&rsquo
s professional and academic position as a &ldquo
reflective practitioner&rdquo
is appraised in the light of John Dewey&rsquo
s concepts of democracy, democratic education and &ldquo
reflective thinking.&rdquo
The changing professional and societal roles of the architect and the changing demands upon architectural education in the 1950s framed the background of Perkins&rsquo
s educational approach. The reappraisal of liberal education as part of professional education of the architect, the rising significance of an interdisciplinary pedagogical approach, and the development of &ldquo
organized research&rdquo
in architecture were among the major themes shaping new orientations in the field of architectural education in America in those years. In the dissertation, the lasting validity of these themes for today is highlighted.

Full textThis thesis is a study of the artistic and architectural production of the Jesuit Missions in the former State of Maranhão and Grão Pará, which was established in 1621, with a special emphasis on the Captaincy of Grão Pará. The period under study spans the time from 1653, when the Society of Jesus settled in the city of Belém, to 1759, when the Jesuits were expelled from Portuguese colonies. This thesis focuses in particular on the artistic work of both jesuits and indians carried out in the workshops at the Jesuit School of Santo Alexandre in Belém in the 18th century. The thesis seeks to trace the dissemination of the models created in such workshops throughout the Jesuit churches and chapels that were built along the borders of the River Amazon and its tributaries, especially those located in the Jesuit aldeias, vilas and fazendas closer to Belém (Vila de Nossa Senhora de Nazaré da Vigia, Vila Souza do Caeté, Mortigura, Gibirié, Mamaiacú, Jaguarari, among others). The hypothesis under investigation in this study is that Belém, in addition to being an economic and commercial hub, was also an artistic center providing models, working methods and technical expertise for the entire Jesuit artistic community in the Grão Pará. The title Tintas da Terra, Tintas do Reino summarizes the core idea underlying this thesis, namely that the Jesuit legacy in the art and architecture of the Grão Pará missions is the result of the work of europeans and indians, who in doing so resorted to their respective cultural traditions.

Full textThe difficulties met to insure the preservation of the peace and the international security on the African continent constitute a real obstacle to the economic development, a danger for the populations and a serious threat for the survival of States. The classic theoretical tools of the international security having proved insufficient to provide an answer to this issue, our objective is to determine, on the basis of the constructivist approach, whether African States show a real willingness and\or a capacity to build a Security Community (SC) that would be able to overcome these difficulties. In order to do so we question whether a link exists between the production of “speech acts” on the one hand and the promotion and the adoption of pacific regulation norms for conflicts on the other, and we examine the way African States apprehend their relations with other members of the supposed SC.The additional use of the concept of “region” and the adoption of an African perspective allow us to divide the object of study "Africa" into several subsets more propitious to the achievement of a scientific study, and to evaluate the relevance and the meaning of the SC concept when applied to the African field of study
