Abstract:
The paper is based on the analysis of bearing architectonic structures, properties of material, durability depending on the impacts they are exposed to. The research is aimed at defining the method of increase of durability of architectonic structure. The damage to the bearing structure concept would mean the damage to functionality, form and esthetics of the structure. The choice of materials and systems of bearing structure is important from the aspect of architectonic designing, formation and functionality, but also of safety and reliability. In that sense, structure durability is multiply important, both for the architectonic form and for the importance of the structure. The choice of materials and design of forms and connections in the structure is very important for improvement of durability.

Abstract:
Solar concentrating collectors with reflectors are a developing technology for thermal applications that can be useful to avoid fossil fuel greenhouse gas emissions, reduce demand for imported fuels and lessen biomass burning. The selected reflector concentrators for building integration studies are: fixed nonimaging compound parabolic concentrator (CPC) E-W line troughs, (building interior with evacuated tubes [ET] for the Temperate Zone, and exterior for the Tropics) with N-S involutes and adjustable end “wall” reflector options; and two-axis tracking small heliostats central receiver tower systems. When these reflector concentrating collector systems are integrated within building form, structure, and site planning, they are one of the main organizing design influences—an essential aspect of conceptual design. Schematic architectonic design studies are presented for mid temperature process heat applications beyond temperatures delivered with typical flat-plate thermal collectors (>≈80°C/176°F). Relations between: solar collector technologies, CPC optical characterization, daylighting, building structure, construction, site planning, and interior space usage are discussed for selected building types. These include CPC solar community and institutional kitchens for the Tropics, and house-size verification facilities with building interior ET and reflectors for the Temperate Zone.

Abstract:
The roof represents an inevitable part of each building. From the architectonic and construction point of view it completes its shape solution and serves an important role of a protective cover. It has to fulfil its protective function without failures and deformations. Shape, construction and material solution of roof deck must go hand in hand with safe method of roof drainage. Correctly drained roof is the basic prerequisite of the whole structure operation. The main and primary role of the drainage system lies in drainage of rain water in as fast and safe method as possible from the roof into the sewage system or absorbing system. Rain water is not a drinking water, but it is clean water which can be used for various purposes in the household.

Immersive Virtual Reality Systems have been extensively used during recent years for the exploration of architectonic spaces. This paper describes how the use of transitable immersive virtual reality systems, that is, those that allow the user to physically walk while exploring the virtual world, can greatly empower the experience of perception of space in architecture. The text describes a particular example of one installation of this kind that was developed by the authors and how it was implemented for the interactive experience of the virtual reconstruction of a housing unit on a pre-roman settlement. This installation is open to the public as part of a permanent exhibition and constitutes the final output of the research at this time.

Abstract:
Lightweight steel constructions are one of the innovative constructional systems steadily increasing in spread due to their huge benefits in respect to more traditional constructional systems. Typical lightweight steel products, usually combined with gypsum, wood and cement based panels, can be used to build both structural and nonstructural systems. After a brief description of the most common lightweight steel constructional systems, this paper describes the state of the art by focusing the attention on their behaviour under seismic actions. In particular, the main past and ongoing research themes are briefly summarised and a critical comparison among seismic codes available in North America, Europe and Oceania is presented. Finally, an overview of studies carried out on this topic at the University of Naples Federico II is presented and latest research activities involving the seismic performance assessment of both lightweight steel structural and nonstructural architectonic systems though shake-table tests is provided.

Abstract:
The honeycomb pattern, comes from nature, is one of the inspiration used by architects in their work. The characteristic form of the hexagon, possible to be duplicated as a module in both "pure" and modified form, favours the implementation of more and more spectacular solutions in architecture. The aim of the article is an overview of selected examples of the honeycomb pattern applied in architecture in relation to shaping its basic form (single objects and their complex systems), as well as used in architectonic details at various scales (elements of building facades). The variety of ideas is resulted from the inventiveness of planners and architects, the development of innovative design tools, and the availability of various materials used in construction.

Abstract:
The colour solution of the surface of the façade is one of the basic factors for reaching the requested aesthetic and architectonic expression of the building. This target is sometimes reached by using very saturated tones of colours or changing dark and light tones on one façade. Such solution is often risky as one of the characteristics of dark colour tones is high absorption of solar and scattered radiation. Its thermal compound causes warming of the outer layers of the façade proportionally to the surface colour saturation. This consequence is very serious especially for thin-layer plaster of external thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS) immediately exposed to dynamic effect of external environment temperature changes, which can be even increased by inappropriate colour solution of the ETICS surface. This paper focuses on evaluation of the influence of ETICS surface colouring on the thermal load.

Abstract:
The measurement and monitoring of structural damages in masonry monuments is an important task in the field of conservation and restoration of architectonic heritage. Traditional surveying devices provide punctual measurements of the damage size and usually are contactdemanding, being an important limitation since risky systems are needed when structural problems appear in no accessible locations. In this field close-range Photogrammetry depict a valuable option. In this paper the dimensional analysis and temporal monitoring of crack is accomplished. Accurate 3D clouds of points defining the crack boundary are obtained in different dates. A quantification of the crack size in each date is obtained by shape parameters. This procedure allows detecting any displacement in ashlars and obtaining a feasible knowledge of the crack growth even when no fixed references are available to align 3D models obtained in different times.

Abstract:
AbstractMedium-scale archaeological phenomena (large settlements, landscape features and infrastructural systems, road networks, etc.) pose significant challenges to archaeological documentation. Traditionally, such features are mapped either schematically or via labor-intensive (or otherwise costly) high-resolution methods. The advent of inexpensive, packable unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and lighter-than-air platforms, combined with increasingly sophisticated photogrammetric and mobile geographic information system (GIS) software systems, presents opportunities for improving on these compromises. Here, we present results from test flights and photogrammetric mapping using UAVs and a meteorological balloon, combined with mobile GIS-based attribute registry of architectonic features at a large, complex colonial planned settlement (Mawchu Llacta de Tuti) in highland colonial Peru. First, the operating parameters of UAVs are presented, as well as the imagery capture and photogrammetric processing work flows. Second, we provide an overview of the tablet-based mobile GIS system used to digitize a site plan (based on the imagery from the UAV) and register architectural attributes from each building. The results from initial testing suggest that in the near future, such combined close-range photogrammetry and mobile GIS-based systems will significantly enhance and expedite high-resolution data registry of a wide range of archaeological features, sites, and landscapes.

Lo, Elsa, and n/a. "Chinese architectonic code : a semiotic study of shop signs in Sydney's Chinatown." University of Canberra. Communication, 1994. http://erl.canberra.edu.au./public/adt-AUC20060818.132847.

Full text
Abstract:
This study aims to furnish a semiotic reading of Sydney's Chinatown by analysing the environmental meanings codified in that particular context. The basic unit of analysis is the shop sign. Some features underlying sign formations in Sydney's Chinatown are identified and the communication process involved in its organisation of meanings and space is explored. The thesis is organised into three parts. The first part gives an introduction to the background of study and examines theories on architectural semiotics and its relation to visual communication. It consists of three chapters. Chapter 1 defines the scope of the study and outlines the objectives and goals of research. Chapter 2 focuses on two related fields of architectural semiotics, viz. semiotics of objects and semiotics of space. Evaluation of semiotic approaches and behavioural science approaches to the study of objects and space is made. Some of the theories discussed are applied to give a profile of shop signs from a visual semiotic perspective. In Chapter 3 a description of the methods of research and an outline of the analytical framework of this study are given. The two chapters of Part Two provide some background information on various conceptions of "Chinatown". Chapter 4 discusses the development features of Chinatowns in North America, which reveal that there are divergent perceptions of Chinatowns. Chapter 5 describes the development of Sydney's Chinatown and underlines some of its distinctive features. In Part Three the results of the study are presented. Chapter 6 focuses on the codification of meanings realised in Sydney's Chinatown. Chapter 7 is concerned with elements of sign formations and examines the communicative functions of shop signs in the Chinatown context. The analyses made in these chapters are intended to identify some features of sign formations in Sydney's Chinatown within an architectonic system. The thesis concludes with a summary of the study and a discussion of the applicability of architectural semiotic theories. It is suggested that further study can be pursued in the direction that contributes to an understanding of architectonic systems and social communication.

Abstract:
The present work studies the problematic of using Solar Hot Water Systems by Direct Circuit, among the critics characteristics of civil construction in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. The point of view is of Architecture and Urban Planning. In spite of the high Brazilian levels of solar irradiation and the constructive pattern of horizontal closed condominiums of the metropolitan region of São Paulo (Brazil), which possess a large concentration of high incoming households, use of solar water heating is still not regulated in some of its comprising municipalities. Nowadays, the search for savings, diffusion of related technologies and raising environmental awareness have led to voluntary uptaking of such systems. Yet, regulation of solar collectors still lacks relating to certification of sustainable building practices, which does not relate to architectonic factors, in particular to main urbanistic features present in each given installation site. This work proposes an architectonic scale based model of studying it in order to pursuit the end of dichotomy between quality and sustainability.

Abstract:
Prehispanic Farming Fields in the Pampa de ChaparríWalled fields on the North Coast were agricultural installations created in the late prehispanic period. In historical accounts, they are associated with Chimu and Inka rulers or their families. Despite their importance to understanding late prehispanic economies, archaeological examples have not been reported to date. Research on walled fields in the Pampa de Chaparri (Ferreñafe province, department of Lambayeque) focused on construction techniques and yield archaeological insights into the management of these agricultural features within a regional agricultural system.

Mentz, Jan Carel. "Enterprise architectonics as a conceptual device to support a fundamental understanding of enterprise architecture." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/18877.

Full text
Abstract:
Evidence of the interest in enterprise architecture (EA) is seen in the number of enterprise architecture frameworks (EAF) in existence. An EAF is responsible for the realisation of an EA, and therefore acts as a container for the terminology of EA. The lack of acceptance of terms and definitions, coupled with the phenomenon of the large number of EAFs, indicate a silo type understanding of what EA is, which leads to a lack of clarity in the conceptual foundations of EA. By following a design science research (DSR) approach, a conceptual artefact (an enterprise architectonic (EAt)) is created to address the lack of clarity in the conceptual foundations of EA thinking and practice. The EAt serves as a conceptual device to represent the fundamental understanding of EA in terms of concepts and their relationships. The content of the EAt is derived from applying a structured interpretation method (SIM) to three prominent EAFs (The Open Group Architecture Framework, the Department of Defense Architecture Framework and the Zachman Framework for Enterprise Architecture). The SIM’s results are an EA understanding that consists of an EA claim: EA is similar in intent to the enterprise as a worldview is to the world. It is supported by six EA propositions:  Proposition 1: EA’s underlying theoretical knowledge is in a pre-suppositional state.  Proposition 2: EA is a description of the structure of the systems of an enterprise.  Proposition 3: EA represents the enterprise in time-oriented architectures such as an as-is, to-be and has-been architecture.  Proposition 4: EA translates the values/strategy of the enterprise into operational systems appropriate to the information society.  Proposition 5: EA provides a means to manage decisions about the IT/IS management and implementation in the enterprise.  Proposition 6: EA captures a representation of the enterprise in the form of a model or set of models. The six EA propositions are analysed through the lens of Heidegger's equipment analysis, to produce a set of architectonic elements. These elements are arranged in the EAt to create a conceptual device to support the fundamental understanding of EA.

Abstract:
This chapter scrutinizes the allusive potential of ornament and the two-dimensional paradigm that dominates ornament studies. Surveying the historiography of architecture-as-ornament, the chapter explores ornament’s relationship with the third dimension. In particular, it focuses on the potential for architectural motifs, especially arches and arcades, to confound two-dimensionality through the generation of fictive spaces that articulate and order form as well as surface. The chapter focuses first on the image of the arcade in various media and particularly on a group of inlaid metalwares with Christological scenes. Next, it moves to thirteenth-century Mosul and the surrounding area to explore the reciprocal relationship between plastic systems of three-dimensional ornament on buildings, metalwares, and a remarkable group of large architectonic earthenware water jars known as ḥabbs.

The preservation and benefit of goods of Cultural Heritage need careful surveying and restoration that can be understood as service tasks for suitable robotic systems. New service robots can be conceived once the specificity of the application in the Cultural Heritage area for architectural goods is carefully considered, both with technical aspects and from operators’ viewpoints. In particular, in this chapter no technical aspects are discussed as fundamental for the acceptance and use by operators in the new field of service robot application for survey and restoration of architectonic goods of Cultural Heritage value. Examples are illustrated from authors’ experience with the aim to stress the problems and challenges in applications for service robotic systems in Cultural Heritage frames.

This chapter explores how Charles Sanders Peirce was convinced that his account of the hierarchical dependence of logic on ethics, and of ethics on esthetics, was a discovery of fundamental importance for a correct understanding of his thought, and one that distinguished his “pragmaticism” from other, more familiar, interpretations of his own famous maxim. It would be a mistake to think that because this was a late development in Peirce's thought, it was an afterthought. It would also be a mistake to think that because Peirce's exposition of that role was short and unsatisfactory, it was not an integral part of what he conceived to be his “architectonic” system.

This chapter examines the philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer (1788–1860), who is considered one of the greatest German prose stylists. His essay “Über Schriftstellerei und Stil” (“On Authorship and Style”) should be read by anyone who ventures to write in German. His phenomenological insight is penetrating, his many interests are almost as encyclopedic as Hegel's, and his architectonic system-building talent is considerable. Schopenhauer radically challenged the philosophy of the logos that had existed since the Greeks, and he did so without falling into the alternative of materialism, which is flat (and has been commonplace since Antiquity). Without Schopenhauer, Nietzsche and his descendants would not have been possible; and his influence extends to the whole of subsequent German, indeed European intellectual history.

Abstract:
This book explores the historical processes contributing to the rise of the federal judiciary as an independent and autonomous institution of governance in the American political system. More specifically, it examines the puzzle of “judicial institution building” —the puzzle of understanding how the process of “building” the judiciary unfolded over the course of American political development. The book examines how the federal judiciary in general, and the Supreme Court in particular, overcame its early limitations and emerged as a powerful institution of American governance. It also considers the transformation of the federal judiciary from “judicial exceptionalism” to what might be called “architectonic” politics and offers a developmental account of judicial power. The book shows that the story of the judiciary's transformation involved a series of battles over law, courts, and the politics of institutional development.

Abstract:
Virtual reality environments are ever more going online. This trend, opened by videogames, will open new important opportunities to enhance cultural tourism, given the possibility of creating compelling virtual adventures set in the context of artistic and natural beauties. The authors are exploring these challenges in the context of the Travel in Europe (TiE) project, and developing tools to build enriched virtual environments where the player could explore faithfully reconstructed places and live there information-rich, contextualized experiences. The TiE architecture is based on a state-of-the-art commercial game engine, with massive multiplayer online games (MMOG) facilities that support access to multiple concurrent users, plus ad-hoc designed modules. The 3D model is completely geo-referenced. In each covered area, a few points-of-interest (POIs) are implemented. These buildings are rigorously reconstructed at a high level of detail. The textures for the rest of the palaces are built dynamically by the TiE system using a statistical template-based algorithm that exploits local characterizations of common architectonic elements. The TiE virtual world is enriched by geo-localized, contextualized MicroGames (mGs). mGs are simple, short games that focus the player’s attention on a particular item that is found during exploration of the 3D world. mGs are typically taken from well known simple game models, such as Puzzle, MemoryGame, and FindTheWrongDetails. The main concept that underpins mGs is that, they should be intuitive and easy to play, so that the player can focus on the contents rather than on learning how to play. Preliminary informal tests have suggested that the approach is valid and that the enriched 3D environment supports the contextualized promotion of artifacts, products and services, which is an important growing demand from institutions and enterprises that want to valorize the resources of a territory.

Abstract:
All human activity is associated with the need for interpersonal communication. The need and concern for other people, as for oneself, is a specific feature of the human race, in which biological necessity acts simultaneously, that is, a person's speech and the individuals themselves are necessarily included in the social and humanitarian context. Considering the linguistic reality of social life in the form of a text, we leave the person as the main object of research. Thus, the original text of modern society is formed, which includes the worldview of people and the features of the mental system of their interaction, the way and nature of existence, a kind of sign system in the form of fixed information. The understanding is presented that speech does not reflect the meaning of things and processes of a certain field of activity, but reveals their content and gives meaning within the framework of practical activity. The mechanism of the genetic application of concepts in a certain historical territory and the process of the formation of the semiotic space of social knowledge and the procedure for recognizing its words-signs are substantiated, thanks to which the sys-tem of understanding the mentality in intellectual discourse is built. The fundamental problem of the relationship between real time and language is analyzed, the fundamental foundations of the formation of the complete semantic structure of language: an immediate feature – an object – a mediating feature – an indirect feature, taking into account the specifics of human social activity. The existential relations of symbolic-semiotic structures in the plane of interaction of the subject field of signs and the place of the subject with the help of semantics are determined, which provides a differentiated modality of the specified relationship, the structure and levels of meanings, the moments of actualization of the designated and places the terms of the specified relationship in a specific social field of their existence; it is proved that a person acts as a signified and is partially included in the models that form his attitude to the surrounding social being, but at the same time he remains signified, that is, those on whom the formation of these models indirectly depends. The study allows us to comprehend the holistic representation of the linguistic reality of the modern architectonics of social and humanitarian knowledge in the process of globalization transformations of the world in its main dimensions and forms.

Abstract:
The research project presented in this paper investigates the architectonic and constructive potential of computational design and digital fabrication in steel construction. The original contribution of this project is the development of a digital design system that solves reciprocal interlinked structures through algorithmic design and iterative processes. The system is implemented with parametric definitions that optimize the mass-customization process for laser tube technology. In order to validate the assumptions, a mock-up has been realized out of stainless steel elements. The tubes are cut by a laser-tube robotic system, then manually assembled.

Abstract:
Agriculture is one of the most important types of economic activity for the Ukrainian economy, since together with other related economic activities it forms more than half of Ukraine’s GDP and the share of agriculture in the production of goods and services tends to increase. In such conditions, an important and urgent task is a retrospective study of the architectonics of financing of agricultural enterprises in Ukraine, the factors influencing it and the substantiation of the prospects for its optimization. The aim of the study is the empirical assessment of the formation of architectonics of financing of agricultural enterprises in Ukraine under the influence of macroeconomic factors and industry factors. For the empirical assessment of the architectonics of financing of agricultural enterprises of Ukraine, a system of absolute and relative indicators, regression and correlation analysis were applied. An empirical assessment of the financial support of agricultural enterprises in Ukraine in the context of agricultural development allowed to distinguish three periods: 2010-2013 – an increase of financial resources of agricultural enterprises in Ukraine subject to excess of equity, ensuring of financial stability of enterprises; 2014-2015 – reduction of financial resources of agricultural enterprises subject to excess borrowed funds, partial loss of financial stability of enterprises; 2016-2018 – an increase of financial resources of agricultural enterprises in the direction of restoring the potential of financial stability and a deterioration in the payment discipline of the resources of agricultural enterprises.

Abstract:
Cultural Heritage (CH) 3D digitisation is getting increasing attention and importance. Advanced survey techniques provide as output a 3D point cloud, wholly and accurately describing even the most complex architectural geometry with a priori established accuracy. These 3D point models are generally used as the base for the realisation of 2D technical drawings and 3D advanced representations. During the last 12 years, the 3DSurveyGroup (3DSG, Politecnico di Milano) conduced an omni-comprehensive, multi-technique survey, obtaining the full point cloud of Milan Cathedral, from which were produced the 2D technical drawings and the 3D model of the Main Spire used by the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano (VF) to plan its periodic maintenance and inspection activities on the Cathedral. Using the survey product directly to plan VF activities would help to skip a long-lasting, uneconomical and manual process of 2D and 3D technical elaboration extraction. In order to do so, the unstructured point cloud data must be enriched with semantics, providing a hierarchical structure that can communicate with a powerful, flexible information system able to effectively manage both point clouds and 3D geometries as hybrid models. For this purpose, the point cloud was segmented using a machine-learning algorithm with multi-level multi-resolution (MLMR) approach in order to obtain a manageable, reliable and repeatable dataset. This reverse engineering process allowed to identify directly on the point cloud the main architectonic elements that are then re-organised in a logical structure inserted inside the informative system built inside the 3DExperience environment, developed by Dassault Systémes.

Abstract:
Abstract: Into the ideas enunciated by Le Corbusier there are two paths starting apparently from parallel and opposite worlds, but finally coming to converge in a same place. With the construction of the “Pavillon de l’Esprit Nouveau”, in 1925, it is defined the new outside space linked to modern life. This is given simultaneously from the collective with the “immeuble-villa”, and from the individual, la villa, although both succeed as coexistent processes. This emptiness was called by Le Corbusier “jardin suspendu”, and the order to define it, will be the same used to build the whole system. From inside, this garden will fail to be an outside to be conceived from the same mechanisms that work into the house. So, what is this space? It is simply what Le Corbusier designed, a rich space duality. In the other side, and opposite the house, an outside emerges always, like a boundless extent of the natural. Which way can it be arranged? How can it be linked again to the human? It exists only one possible answer, one unique gesture, the architectonic one, which emerges with the construction of a plan. With it, vertical and horizontal positions arise: those lines that link again the man with his laws. With it, this emptiness doesn’t exists anymore, it has changed becoming in a new space. What is this space? Again, a rich ambiguity. Palabras clave: immeuble-villa, jardin suspendu, interior, exterior, dualidad especial.
