Shaibani, Aziz. Deformities. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190661304.003.0024.

Full text
Abstract:
Deformities are important markers for congenital and hereditary neuromuscular disorders. For example, kyphosis, scoliosis, and pes cavus are common in Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease and hereditary ataxias. Deformities such as high feet arches may also result from long-time weakness and asymmetry. Other types of deformities may be related to connective tissue pathology, which can be associated with neuromuscular disorders. Examples include multiple lipomatosis, scleroderma, and nephrogenic systemic sclerosis (NSS). Charcot joint is a result of lack of proprioceptive sensation and is usually associated with severe chronic neuropathy. Deformity of the nose can result from syphilis and leprosy. This chapter shows examples of these deformities and their treatments.

Deformities are important markers for congenital and hereditary neuromuscular disorders. Kyphosis, scoliosis, Pes Cavus, for example, are common in CMT and hereditary ataxias. Deformities may also result from long-term weakness and asymmetry. Chronic neuropathies with distal weakness may lead to gradual changes in the height of feet arches. A high foot arche that is corrected with wight bearing or manually, is usually not congenital. Other types of deformities are related to connective tissue pathology, which can be associated with neuromuscular disorders, for example multiple lipomatosis, scleroderma, contractures, nephrogenic systemic sclerosis, and so on. This chapter shows examples of these deformities. Musculoskeletal deformities may lead to entrapment neuropathies.

Abstract:
Neurology emerged as a transdisciplinary field of research, allying iconographic collage, clinical experimentation, performative re-enactment, narrative, and historiography. Jean-Martin Charcot and his colleagues at the Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris engaged in what they called ‘retrospective medicine’, an archival exercise that involved compiling images from the past depicting convulsive gestures that represented, they thought, hysteria, epilepsy, and ‘hysteroepilepsy’, a theatrical form of acting out they considered stemmed from the patient’s imagination. From the Convulsionaries of Saint-Médard to maenads on Greek vase paintings and ecstatic figures depicted in religious frescoes, Charcot and his collaborators collected artefacts resembling their patients’ dance-like gestures: arches of the back and other attitudes passionnelles re-enacted on the lecture-hall stage. This exuberant comparativism, and iconographic excavation, paved the way for ethnographic fieldwork (and eventually anthropology), as one neurology student took it into his hands to visit the reportedly still living remains of choreomania in a nearby dancing procession.

Abstract:
This chapter reflects on the sequence of the book so far, and applies the discussion to some aspects of human life. It is false to say that an arch is explained by the properties of stones. It would still be false to say that an arch is explained by what stones are, even if all arches everywhere were made of stones. Similar observations extend throughout science, and from this it can, and should, be deduced that the moral stature of human beings is neither eroded nor replaced by the study of the physical mechanism of human beings. It is the duty of scientists writing for the general public to make this clear and not fudge it. It is false to say, for example, that the language of justice and responsibility is less objective than statements about wavefunctions coming from physics, or statements about genes in biology.

Dyer, Laura A., and Margaret L. Kirby. The role of the neural crest in cardiac development. Edited by José Maria Pérez-Pomares, Robert G. Kelly, Maurice van den Hoff, José Luis de la Pompa, David Sedmera, Cristina Basso, and Deborah Henderson. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198757269.003.0019.

Full text
Abstract:
The cardiac neural crest (CNC) plays pivotal roles in numerous steps of cardiac development. Every aspect of the CNC cell’s lifespan is highly orchestrated, from its induction in the dorsal neural tube to its migration to its differentiation at its final destination. During migration, CNC cells are affected by their environment and simultaneously modulate the extra-cellular milieu through which they migrate. In the pharyngeal arches, CNC cells repattern the originally symmetrical arch arteries, producing the great arteries. Because the cardiac neural crest is essential for many aspects of heart development, it is unsurprising that human CNC-related syndromes have severe phenotypes. This chapter describes how CNC cells are formed and contribute to their final destinations. Essential signalling pathways are presented in the context of CNC development, and CNC-related syndromes are included to highlight this population’s broad importance during development.

Caramello, Olivia. Classifying toposes and the ‘bridge’ technique. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198758914.003.0004.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter consists of two parts. The first part reviews the fundamental notion of classifying topos of a geometric theory and discusses the appropriate kinds of interpretations between theories which induce morphisms between the associated classifying toposes; the theoretical presentation is accompanied by a few concrete examples of classifying toposes of theories naturally arising in mathematics. A characterization theorem for universal models of geometric theories inside classifying toposes is also established. The second part presents the general unifying technique ‘toposes as bridges’. This technique, which allows one to extract ‘concrete’ information from the existence of different representations for the classifying topos of a geometric theory, is systematically exploited in the course of the book to establish theoretical results as well as applications. The ‘decks’ of topos-theoretic ‘bridges’ are normally given by Morita equivalences, while the ‘arches’ are given by site characterizations of topos-theoretic invariants.

Gunn, Sarah. Stone House Construction. CSIRO Publishing, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643106857.

Full text
Abstract:
Stone House Construction is a comprehensive study of Australian stone building techniques in a residential context, for people with an interest in building or renovating, including property owners, architects and builders. It has a strong theme of historic stone buildings, as traditional forms of building respond to the need for structural integrity and stability over time against weathering. The book covers aspects of building in locally sourced stone, from quarrying on-site to building arches over openings for upper storey walls, and is a source book of examples and methods to help the reader to carry on a tradition of building in local stone. Stone buildings inspire people because they transfer a natural beauty to a human achievement. The book shows many examples of Australian stonework that have not been given exposure in previous architectural references. It promotes Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD) through the continuation of a stonework tradition in Australia.

Flohr, Miko. Innovation and Society in the Roman World. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199935390.013.85.

Full text
Abstract:
This article assesses the impact of innovation on Roman society. It starts from a critical engagement with past debate about technological progress, which over the past decades has been too strongly focused on economic growth, and a re-appreciation of the literary evidence for innovation, which points to a culture in which technological knowledge and invention were thought to matter. Then, it highlights two areas where the uptake of technology had a direct impact on everyday life: material culture, where the emergence of glass-blowing, a proliferation of metal-working, and innovation in pottery-production changed the nature and amount of artefacts by which people surrounded themselves, and construction, where building techniques using opus caementicium, arches and standardized building materials revolutionized urban and rural landscapes. A concluding discussion highlights the role of integration of the Mediterranean under Roman rule in making innovation possible, and the role of consumer demand in bringing it about.
