Abstract:
ABSTRACTIn 1711 the opera L'Anagilda was performed in the private theatre of Francesco Maria Ruspoli, an important Roman patron of the Arcadian Academy. L'Anagilda's librettist (Girolamo Gigli) and composer (Antonio Caldara) were both associated with this society, but the opera contrasts with the basic goal of Arcadian aesthetics – namely, to reform literature and opera by imitating the structure of ancient Greek tragedy and the stylistic purity of Italian renaissance poets. Rather, Gigli and Caldara created an opera infused with comedy, interspersed with fantastic intermezzos and formulated according to a genre not endorsed by Arcadian literary critics, the mock heroic. This article explores topics related to one central question: why would Gigli and Caldara openly flout the literary precepts of Arcadia? Gigli was a career satirist whose works eventually caused him to be exiled from his native Siena, all of Tuscany and the Papal States, and to be expelled from three major literary academies, the Intronati, the Cruscanti and the Arcadians. Since he continually criticized the organizations to which he belonged for their narrow-mindedness, prejudice and hypocrisy, I contend that L'Anagilda represents a critique of Arcadia. Yet in the process, Gigli also shows the Arcadians that there is more than one path to verisimilitude and the imitation of classical models. Despite the mock-heroic characteristics of the libretto, Gigli adheres to some Arcadian structural requirements, and Caldara's score heightens the characterizations and the overall verisimilitude of the opera.

Abstract:
<p>An analysis of stone artefacts from the Arcadia Valley in south central Queensland is used to develop a core reduction sequence model for the region. During the initial construction of this model, core types are identified that reflect phases or end points in reduction trajectories. The model shows that core reduction methods employed in the Arcadia Valley during the mid-to-late Holocene included Levallois, discoidal, prismatic and burin blade core methods, along with less formal reduction strategies. In recognition of the equifinality of many reduction processes, the model has a flexible structure. Hence the prevalence of the various core reduction methods, and their relationships to each other, may be the subject of a range of hypothetical scenarios which can be tested by employing multiple lines of additional evidence. Following this procedure, it is concluded that Levallois and discoidal methods may account for close to half of the artefact assemblage, while less formal methods were also very common.</p>

Abstract:
Because of the decline in production and negative economic effects, there is an urgent need for strategies to reduce the impact of Huanglongbing (HLB) on citrus [Citrus ×sinensis (L.) Osbeck]. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of different irrigation schedules on total available soil water (TAW) and water uptake characteristics of citrus trees affected by HLB in central and southwest Florida. The study was initiated in Jan. 2014 for 2 years on 5-year-old sweet orange trees located in three commercial groves at Arcadia, Avon Park, and Immokalee, FL. Each grove had three irrigation scheduling treatments including the University of Florida, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) recommendations, Daily irrigation, and an Intermediate treatment. All groves received similar volumes of water per week based on evapotranspiration (ETo) reported by the Florida Automated Weather Network. Sap flow (SF) measurements were taken for two trees per treatment for at least 10 days per site (twice/year). During those periods, leaf area, leaf area index (LAI), and stem water potential (Ψ) were determined. Also, TAW was determined using drainage curve and capacitance soil moisture sensors installed at incremental soil depths of 0–15, 15–30, and 30–45 cm. Results showed significant differences in average SF, LAI, Ψ, and TAW measurements among treatments. Diurnal SF value under daily irrigation treatment increased by 91%, 51%, and 105% compared with UF/IFAS irrigation in Arcadia, Avon Park, and Immokalee, respectively. Soil water contents (WCs) under daily treatment increased by 59%, 59%, and 70% compared with UF/IFAS irrigation treatment in Arcadia, Avon Park, and Immokalee, respectively. Our results indicated that daily irrigation improved tree water dynamics compared with IFAS or Intermediate irrigation scheduling treatments and reduced tree stress with the same volume of water.

This work intends to analyze the role played for the arcades in the constitution of the urbanity of the central area of Juiz de Fora. The case in question if becomes sufficiently significant for perceives that it inside presents as particular of the current Brazilian urban reality - while the majority of average cities of the country tries process of urban decentralization, in that city the process is another one: each time more the center accumulates, it diversifies e, for consequence, it becomes more important before the remain of the city. The research, therefore, intends to analyze the transformations of the downtown urban net understood by the central triangle conformed by the three main avenues of the city. This region was focused at three historical moments: First, the analysis approaches the constitution of the urban nucleus, from the transformation of important roads of the period of the Empire in the main avenues of the area in question. The second part privileges the modifications of the central public mesh with the advent and proliferation of the arcades, over all enters the decades of 1950 and 1990, that they had been consolidated as specific traces of the urbanity of Juiz de Fora. Finally, the study concentrates in the current period, analyzing the aesthetic alterations printed to the net of arcades, which would confer to the center of the city a new appearance.

Abstract:
This diploma thesis gives a proposal for a new Moravian wine center in the city center of Brno. Wine center is situated on the street Hlinka, where grapevines were planted in the Middle Ages. Demarcated land is narrow and elongated sloping towards to the south and connects the Yellow hills and the Brno Exhibition Centre. The main idea of this thesis is connect these two significant locations and offer the visitor a free passage along the entire length of the complex. Also main building Moravian Wine Centre reflects this fact and it expands the space of the street stalls and forms it into overgrown "arcade". The house is opened into this space - with glazed facade of the first two floors or with transmission into the rear wing. The main building consist of the cellar, where it is located wellness, winehouse, rentable wine boxes and tasting room connected with wine production. The rest of floors are designed for wine gallery, information center, reception, shop, restaurant, conference center and hotel. There is a café with roof terrace in the last floor. It offers a magnificent view into cityscape of Brno, Brno Exhibition Centre and the Yellow slope of the hill. There is designed a pond for relaxation in the courtyard. Nearby is situated Wine Institute building with facilities for making wine. In the second half of the land are located three blocks of luxury apartments in the middle of a vineyard. A leading construction is the most striking feature of the facade that reminds bougainvillea vines with vaulted arches wine cellars and attracts at first sight.

Abstract:
M. Tech. Architecture (Professional)
This dissertation responds to the current urban situation in Pretoria's Central Business District and entails the design of a Creative Hub through the rejuvenation of Pretoria's Burlington Arcade in the Church Square node. The Creative Hub will function as an incubator space for the creative industry, as well as potentially becoming a catalyst for the rejuvenation of the inner-city of Pretoria. Tshwane's inner-city's economic role has reduced dramatically compared to cities such as Johannesburg. Private and public sectors turn their investment interest away from the city towards the suburbs. A solution needs to be found to encourage investment and increase visitor confidence in the city's long term commitment to change. As with any urban regeneration project, it would require dedicated investment from the all sectors, over a lengthy period of time to initiate this change. The Creative Hub acknowledges urban renewal as the long term goal for the inner-city, but aims to evoke interest within the Church Square node to serve as a vehicle for change to occur through the introduction of "a people's place". Students, creative individuals and professionals, tourists, city dwellers, city goers as well as artisan traders are invited to meet within the space to promote Church Square as the historically rich, culturally textured environment it is.

In the process of urban development in Taiwan, the arcade commonly are the spaces subject to legal norms in architectural design in response to the local climate requirements, such as intensive sunshine and havy strom rain. Although arcades are part of the public space, but due to the commercial activities and developments, the commercial signboards indication has been brought in to the arcade and becomes one of the major factors that impact the shape of the city’s landscape. This assessment takes central dist. Zhongshan Road of Taichung City as model, conducts researchs for statistics of commercial activities, analysing how the old city embraces the modern commercial changes during the time being and the shape of the historical marks. The population changes impact to the central area of the original downtown, and with economic recovery been happening recently in the area. New commercial activities rising and gradually bringing the population back in to Zhongshan Road in these days. The topic is focuing on the how the signboard adoptes the changes that comes from generations, space limitation of arcade and the exterior design of bulidaings. Through interviews, photosgraphy, "sample analysis" and "field investigation" to study the commercial signboards differences. Furthermore, concludes the analysis of commercial types and the results can be used as reference to observe the tendency and facilitate ongoing developments.

Abstract In order to understand the relationship between consumer’s characteristics and consumptionwillingness in consumption in vegetarian restaurants, we investigated and compared the dining experience, perspective on reasonable living and healthy food and influence factors for consumers with various backgrounds in consuming in the vegetarian restaurant in the shopping bazaar of a large-scaled hospital located in the central region of Taiwan. The relationship between consumption willingnessand consumers' belief on environmental issue, peer influence, subjective motive, respectively, are explored as well. Base on the 250 effective questionnaires, we carried on descriptive statistics, independent-sample t test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and correlation analysis. The results suggested that: 1. Consumers’ attitudes are always positiveregardless of their backgrounds.High-income consumers are more concerned about the level of enjoyment, pleasure and the degree of popularity in the consumption. 2. In addition to the disagreement with “eating in vegetarian restaurant can save money”, consumers agree with the perspective of reasonable living and healthy food in the consumption behavior. Female showed higher degree of agreement than male consumers. 3. Factors like price and spending-time would affect the willingness of consumption, while social-encouragement and traffic-convenience would promote the consumption willingness. 4. Consumer willingness and environmental protection beliefs showed a positive correlation, significantly. 5. The level of consumers’ income is the key factor that would affect the consumption willingness. The middle-income group has more consideration in decision-making for consumption in vegetarian restaurant. Nowadays, more attention has been attracted on the issue of food-safety and environment-protection, the results of this study can be treated as a reference to understand the characteristics and trends of vegetable-consumption market. Abstract:
This book surveys an archaeology “in and of the present.” It investigates the challenges and pitfalls of an archaeology of the contemporary world as well as the methodologies for doing it. It consists of a collection of chapters in which authors from within and outside of archaeology reflect on cross-disciplinary concerns. Contributors discuss topics ranging from scale and time to ruins, memory, authenticity, sectarianism, heritage, modernism, and disaster. To extend and complicate the interdisciplinary overviews and archaeological thematics, the book presents in-depth case studies on mobilities, space and place; media and mutabilities; and things and connectivities. Three contributors?representing disciplinary interests in archaeology, geography and photography?produce photo essays in which they reflect on some of the central themes in an archaeology of the contemporary world. The book pursues questions of materiality that appear to owe much to Walter Benjamin's unfinished Arcades Project (2002), a distinctively spatial exploration of the ruins and debris of the arcades of Paris. It also looks at spectacular events as sites of material intensity, including protests and riots, sporting mega-events, and festivals.

Blome, David A. Greek Warfare beyond the Polis. Cornell University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.7591/cornell/9781501747526.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book assesses the nature and broader significance of warfare in the mountains of classical Greece. Based on detailed reconstructions of four unconventional military encounters, the book argues that the upland Greeks of the classical mainland developed defensive strategies to guard against external aggression. These strategies enabled wide-scale, sophisticated actions in response to invasions, but they did not require the direction of a central, federal government. The book brings these strategies to the forefront by driving ancient Greek military history and ancient Greek scholarship “beyond the polis” into dialogue with each other. As it contends, beyond-the-polis scholarship has done much to expand and refine our understanding of the ancient Greek world, but it has overemphasized the importance of political institutions in emergent federal states and has yet to treat warfare involving upland Greeks systematically or in depth. In contrast, the book scrutinizes the sociopolitical roots of warfare from beyond the polis, which are often neglected in military histories of the Greek city-state. By focusing on the significance of warfare vis-à-vis the sociopolitical development of upland polities, the book shows that although the more powerful states of the classical Greek world were dismissive or ignorant of the military capabilities of upland Greeks, the reverse was not the case. The Phocians, Aetolians, Acarnanians, and Arcadians in circa 490–362 BCE were well aware of the arrogant attitudes of their aggressive neighbors, and as highly efficient political entities, they exploited these attitudes to great effect.

Kourelis, Kostis. "The Archaeology of Forced Migration in Greece: A Layered Pedagogy." In Migration, Displacement, and Higher Education, 151–62. Cham: Springer International Publishing, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-031-12350-4_12.

Abstract:
AbstractHow does the academic teaching of archaeology in the United States respond to the urgent questions surrounding this migration to Europe? The ad hoc urbanism of Greece’s migrant camps offers a rich entry point for the study of contemporary migration and its relationship to historical landscapes. Since its foundation in 1830, modern Greece has experienced continuous episodes of forced migration, emigration, internal displacement, war, economic collapse, destruction, abandonment, and ruination. Its countryside is layered with migrant sites, artifacts, and memories. Starting in the seventeenth century, European intellectuals valorized the Greek landscape as an idyllic Arcadia that was central to Western civilization’s relationship to nature. Representing universal values, Greece’s antiquities stand as foils to the mutability and degeneration of modernity and form the subject of archaeology as a discipline.

Schad, John. "On measuring the nineteenth century." In Interventions. Manchester University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.7228/manchester/9781784995102.003.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
In this chapter John Schad offers a theoretical consideration of the concept of the nineteenth century, paying particular attention to how it might be measured (if it is not to be defined in simple calendrical terms). The essay takes as its primary text Walter Benjamin’s famous work The Arcades Project (1927-40), with its myriad insights into the nineteenth century, not least its claim that Paris is ‘the capital of the nineteenth century.’ Particularly important both to Benjamin and to the essay are the voices of such major nineteenth-century thinkers as Baudelaire, Proudhon, Bakunin, Michelet, Marx and Nietzsche. Schad sets these continental figures alongside various contemporaneous British figures, such as Arnold, Carlyle and Wilde to explore a number of defining themes of the century – in particular: revolution, democracy, realism, bureaucracy, the university, the death of God, the arcade, the exhibition, and the fear of hell. The chapter concludes by bringing together a number of these themes in an exploration of Poe’s seminal story, ‘The Man of the Crowd’ (1840), which, following Benjamin, is read as an allegory of the nineteenth century, seeing in its central figure not only what Baudelaire calls ‘the man of the century’ but also its very face.

Lane, Belden C. "Desire: Rockpile Mountain Wilderness and Thomas Traherne." In Backpacking with the Saints. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199927814.003.0013.

Abstract:
A wilderness place triggers desire in unexpected ways. It plants an itch that can’t easily be satisfied. Take Rockpile Mountain in the Arcadia Valley region of the St. Francois Mountains in southeast Missouri. I’ve hiked its wilderness area numerous times, taking Little Grass Mountain Trail south to hook up with the loop trail that circles from the rocky shut-ins near the mountain’s foot to the strange “rock pile” at its crest. The place awakens desire in me every time I come. It’s nothing remarkable—a 1,305-foot knoll covered by an oak-hickory forest. Its name derives from a circle of blue granite stones atop its ridge. White settlers noticed the oddity in the early nineteenth century. Prior to their arrival, Osage and Illini peoples lived in the area, descendants of earlier Oneonta and Mississippian cultures in central Missouri and eastern Illinois. Whatever purpose it originally served, the place carries a sense of mystery to this day. The stone circle is fifteen feet in diameter. An anvil-shaped rock stands near its center, with two small cedar trees nearby. Archaeologists have excavated similar stone circles in the upper Midwest. They appear to have been ceremonial sites, possibly used by flint knappers in making stone tools or weapons. It is a good place for cutting to the heart of things—for recognizing desire as one of the soul’s hardest disciplines. Giving yourself to desire isn’t an exercise for the faint-hearted. The desert novice who passes through disillusionment is gripped by a hunger for what she has sensed but never seen in the surrounding wilderness. Stripped of grandiosity (her initial confidence in mastering challenges), she’s had a taste of something grander yet. But she lacks proof that the “elusive lion” of her deepest desire was anything more than her imagination. Keeping desire aflame in the absence of what one seeks requires stoutness of heart. It demands the relinquishment of lesser longings as well. A holy desire isn’t a warm feeling that sweeps you off your feet. It is a discipline, something you choose. The greatest desires are beyond fulfillment. They thrive on the wanting itself.

Debbabi, Sana, and Serge Baile. "Creating Telepresence in Virtual Mediated Environments." In Virtual Technologies, 1575–81. IGI Global, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.4018/978-1-59904-955-7.ch102.

Full text
Abstract:
Why examine the concept of telepresence? A number of emerging technologies, including virtual reality, simulation, home theater, state-of-the-art video conferencing and virtual three-dimensional (3-D) environment, are designed to give the user a type of mediated experience that has never been possible before. This new experience seems to be “real,” “direct” and “immediate.” The term telepresence has been used to describe this compelling sense of being present in these mediated virtual environments (Held & Durlach, 1992; Steuer, 1992). On the empirical side, the use of this new revolution in media technologies has expanded to telemedicine, telepsychiatry, distance learning, legal testimony from remote locations, arcade games and more (see Lombard & Ditton, 1997). An enhanced sense of telepresence is central to the usefulness and profitability of the new technologies mentioned above, and others such as the World Wide Web and high-definition television. As underlined by Zhang, Benbasat, Carey, Davis, Galletta and Strong (2002) in the management information systems field, the concept of telepresence has become an important component of our understanding of how people experience computer-mediated environments. On the theoretical side, researchers in communication, psychology and other fields are interested in particular in how people are influenced by media presentations. An understanding of telepresence can enhance our theories here, too. Despite the centrality and importance of telepresence, it has not yet been carefully defined and explicated. In fact, researchers, especially those working on human performance in virtual reality, have noted the need to conceptualize and measure telepresence more effectively (e.g., Held & Durlach, 1992; Sheridan, 1992). In the remainder of this article, we (a) review several conceptualizations of telepresence and presence in literature, (b) review telepresence determinants, (c) outline the main methods commonly used for measuring telepresence and (d) recommend attributes of future research concerning this concept.

Kerrigan, Susan, Phillip McIntyre, and Marion McCutcheon. Australian Cultural and Creative Activity: A Population and Hotspot Analysis: Geelong and Surf Coast. Queensland University of Technology, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5204/rep.eprints.206969.

Full text
Abstract:
Geelong and the Surf Coast are treated here as one entity although there are marked differences between the two communities. Sitting on the home of the Wathaurong Aboriginal group, this G21 region is geographically diverse. Geelong serviced a wool industry on its western plains, while manufacturing and its seaport past has left it as a post-industrial city. The Surf Coast has benefitted from the sea change phenomenon. Both communities have fast growing populations and have benefitted from their proximity to Melbourne. They are deeply integrated with this major urban centre. The early establishment of digital infrastructure proved an advantage to certain sectors. All creative industries are represented well in Geelong while many creatives in Torquay are embedded in the high profile and economically dominant surfing industry. The Geelong community is serviced well by its own creative industries with well-established advertising firms, architects, bookshops, gaming arcades, movie houses, music venues, newspaper headquarters, brand new and iconic performing and visual arts centres, libraries and museums, television and radio all accessible in its refurbished downtown area. Co-working spaces, collective practices and entrepreneurial activity are evident throughout the region.
