Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to create a concept of semi-centralized cryptocurrency that supports external interoperability. It is assumed that semi-centralized cryptocurrency is the future of cryptocurrencies in the banking sector, because even at the cost of partial centralization, the concept brings the benefits of a decentralized ledger. Since the simultaneous deployment of their own cryptocurrencies by various central authorities, such as central bank, it is necessary to establish a communication protocol for interbank transactions. The work is thus focused on extending the existing Aquareum solution with an interoperability protocol.

Montagne, Quentin. "L’Aquarium : vision et représentation des mondes subaquatiques : un dispositif d’exposition au croisement de l’art et de la science." Thesis, Rennes 2, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019REN20010.

Abstract:
Initiated with the author’s own artistic work, the first purpose of this thesis is to point out the plastic and aesthetic properties of the aquarium, in its household and unique form as much as in the scale of the scenographies used by the public aquariums. The second objective is to determine its connections with the natural state of the subaquatic world, and its influence over our way of perceiving this unique environment. Directly inherited from the XIXth century, and essentially ignored by the academic world, this exhibition device is characterized by its ambiguity. It constantly fluctuates between science, decoration and entertainment, while taking an infinite variety of forms, each one involving the spectator in a different way. Using examples in the fields of art, art history, literature, and natural sciences, but constantly linked to the author’s artistic work, this thesis is organized in three parts. After a brief historical approach of the aquarium, it is first defined as a display, a screen generating pictures, based on the model of the painting and the theater stage, and it appears then, considering its components, to be a miniature garden. Far from an accurate reproduction of a natural site, the aquarium falls under the field of art and creation, perpetuating the Mannerism of the Cinquecento, the theory of the picturesque developed in the XVIIIth century, or Chinese and Japanese traditional gardens. Without any major change since its invention, the land- or aquascape inside the aquarium finally projects a nostalgic piece of scenery - the ruins, grottoes and other follies referring to both legendary apocalypses and the current ecological peril

Bruce, Carrie M. "Facilitating participation in adults with and without vision loss by supporting exhibit motivations through real-time descriptive mediation." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/51832.

Full text
Abstract:
Design and evaluation of real-time descriptive mediation (RTDM) for live aquarium exhibits was proposed to support the participation of visitors with and without vision loss. RTDM was developed to address learning, entertainment, restorative, and social motivations. Data was collected during a lab study with adults to get feedback about the RTDM and compare it to traditional docent presentations and audio tours. Findings show that the RTDM made it possible for participants to address their exhibit motivations and led to specific personal and social aspects of participation. A majority of participants with and without vision loss reported that the RTDM was supportive of their motivations and perceived it to be more effective at supporting learning, social, and restoration motivations compared to audio tour and docent mediation. The main contributions of this work are in: 1) developing evidence-based information design criteria for mediation at live animal exhibits; 2) demonstrating that mediation designed to support exhibit motivations can facilitate participation in adults with and without vision loss; and 3) validating participation as a design goal.

Abstract:
The creation of a place of refuge amid chaos. To create a place that answers the question, â why are we here?â The definition of a place between the sacred and the profane. The complexity of the city will foster an oasis: the serenity of order. In acknowledgement of complexity, simplify. After all, architecture is the theatre wherein the drama of life unfolds. The city will enter the building, and the building will never turn its back on the city. The sea will enter the city through the building, as the city will enter the seaâ ¦ Neither is static. This is life of the highest order. Memory and anticipation will part to yield a performance of the present. This proposal is an effort to reintroduce a humanfriendly scale to an urban edge, embracing the life of the water bodies, and giving direction, identity, and thus purpose (to the human, the city and the sea) through architectural celebration. The site determined a set of environmental and planning issues asking for resolution through architectural intervention. The decision to make an aquarium derived from the questions asked by the existing conditions. An initial subtractive formal treatment of the site (to bring the river inward during high tide) and the reconciliation of this with an additive formal language of the building became a point of departure. The synthesis of form was to be organized as a linear progression through a series of experiences delineating a walk from land to sea.

Abstract:

The Monterey Bay Aquarium was founded in 1984 and hosts nearly two million visitors each year. In addition to the paid staff, there are over 1,000 volunteers who are critical to Aquarium operations. One set of volunteers comprises the guides who rotate to different stations throughout the Aquarium during their shift to interpret the various exhibits. No formal analysis has been previously completed to optimize guide scheduling based on existing constraints. Currently, the guide schedule is manually generated; however, last minute no-shows or drop-ins often prevent an optimal schedule from being generated. This thesis established target staffing levels for each shift based on requirements developed by the guide program managers. Additionally, this thesis seeks to optimize the guides’ scheduled rotation during their shift. While the guide program managers have done an excellent job using heuristic methods to develop nearly optimal schedules, they have not been able to incorporate methods that minimize the time that is lost by guides transiting from station to station. This thesis analyzed and developed guide schedules that minimize the time spent transiting between stations. The guide schedule was modeled as a multicommodity flow network and solved with linear programing.

Large screens in semi-public spaces are already used in different organizations for presenting information. To make these information radiators work, the visualization and interaction have to be as attractive and intuitive as possible. In this paper, we present a new way of visualizing social activity streams on semi-public large screens. In order to keep the user interface simple, and to attract people that are passing by, the aquarium metaphor is used. Apart from describing a prototype implementation, the paper elaborates on an evaluation of the prototype.

Abstract:
This dissertation investigates undersea cinema from its origins to the present. Addressing a range of documentaries, narrative fiction films, and sound recordings made undersea, this project emphasizes ocean cinema’s ties to the histories of ocean exploration, conquest, and conservation—contexts from which undersea films cannot be extricated. For over a century, undersea films have brought the distant world of the deep up close to the eyes and ears of a broad public; they have been a major influence on popular understanding of the ocean, which today is of great environmental significance and a powerful symbol of a fragile global ecology. This project aims to show how the ocean as a cinematic site of ecological consciousness is, as a condition of its production, intimately linked to environmentally unfriendly histories of technology. The often-dazzling images of marine life shown on film can increase viewers’ sensitivity to the other forms of life with which they share the planet. At the same time, producing these images has historically relied on exploratory technologies built for the purpose of better exploiting the marine environment economically and militarily. This contradiction between films’ meanings and their conditions of possibility is not limited to ocean cinema; it characterizes a wide range of environmental films. By focusing on ocean cinema, a particularly rich case of unseen worlds, environmental consciousness, and destructive techno-scientific commitments coming together, this dissertation aims to illuminate a tension that pervades environmental cinema in general.

Abstract:

This research project examined the effects of a training program that focused on helping youth volunteers create a learner-centered interaction at an Aquarium. This study explored whether this learner centered training resulted in an increased ability to identify learner-centered engagement as well as reported changes in practice.

Most research on training programs and professional development, that introduces learner-centered strategies examines adult teachers working in formal environments. This study examined youth volunteer staff in an informal science institution that participated in a weekly one-hour training for four weeks during their eight week long summer volunteer program.

The data showed that some of topics introduced in the learner centered training, such as the importance of visitors' prior knowledge and the use of objects, were identified more often as good practice after the training. In addition, participants seemed to hold on to some of their original perceptions of good practices, such as providing positive reinforcement and modifying their physical posture to make the visitors feel comfortable. The investigation also revealed that conversation patterns changed in some participants' practice as a result of the training.

This thesis focuses on the design of an aquarium on the waterfront of Victoria Harbor in Hong Kong . The aquarium serves as a public 'event' which aims to educate and inform the visitor about regional environmental conditions and their effects on global ecological systems. The design incorporates the notion of 'information flows: addressing the relationship between the movement of the visitor through the architectural space and the movement of information sustained by the architecture. Acrylic technologies which function as the threshold between water and air, provide the opportunity to investigate the way in which information is layered and disseminated in this specific program. The aquarium aims at reconciliation between the harbor front development and the water's edge, becoming the physical filter between the aquatic ecosystem and the civic community. If we consider the aquarium building type as a 'living machine' (i.e., one that needs to sustain life), it can then be described as having a symbiotic relationship with the organisms it sustains . The aquarium can then be considered as a 'container' or sampling of the greater global aquatic ecosystem, encapsulated by a flowing membrane of circulation reciprocating with Hong Kong's urban fabric. The thesis proposes that architectural space can be redefined at the interface between nature, technology and the body.

I. hoferi is a mesomycetozoan parasite that multiplies in blood rich organs in the fish hosts causing a wide range of clinical signs resulting in organ dysfunction. I. hoferi can be diagnosed from microscopic examination of tissue squash preparations, culture, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and histopathology. In the literature only lethal methods of diagnosis are described. The development of a non-lethal diagnostic tool for disease monitoring is vital for collections where euthanasia of specimens is not possible.

Moss, Andrew. "The educational value of zoos and aquariums." Thesis, University of Kent, 2017. https://kar.kent.ac.uk/62717/.

Full text
Abstract:
Zoos and aquariums are some of the most-visited institutions, with around 700 million visits made to them globally each year. They are, in a basic sense, simply repositories of living biodiversity. However, the justifications for the continued existence of zoos have evolved since their inception in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and nearly all now position themselves as organisations focussed on the conservation of the world's remaining biodiversity. Public education of visitors is seen as, and is claimed to be, a central role in achieving this mission. Until relatively recently, very little was known about the impacts of zoo-based education. In this thesis, I will argue that good, progressive zoos and aquariums can and do achieve positive educational impacts on the people that visit them. Using a combination of structured observational methods and traditional social survey designs, I have explored the relative popularity of zoo animals, assessed the tolerance of zoo visitors to different environmental education themes, and have conducted the first fully global evaluation of zoo education impacts. In brief, I found that taxonomic group (mammals), increasing body size and activity levels were significant predictors of visitor interest in zoo animals, giving zoo professionals an evidence base to make decisions regarding education programming and exhibit design. Zoo visitors were also found to be, in the main, accepting to education content that reached beyond animal-based themes. This gives zoo educators the evidence to support their efforts to design and deliver more diverse programmes that cover wider environmental education themes. Finally, from a global survey of more than 5,000 visitors to 26 zoos and aquariums, I concluded that people tend to end their visit with a significantly greater understanding of what biodiversity is, as well as the ways that they personally can help protect it. The links between these two knowledge strands were, however, found to be less strong than predicted, leading to a discussion around the significance of the role of knowledge in catalysing human behaviour change. Aside from demonstrating their own positive educational impact, the wider implication of this research is that zoos and aquariums can also show that they are helping to achieve global biodiversity targets; namely, UN Aichi Biodiversity Target 1. From this, I will argue that the educational role of zoos should be considered as a more influential contributor to biodiversity conservation, and society more generally, than has previously been accepted.

Abstract:
Biological invasions threaten the ecological integrity of natural ecosystems. Anthropogenic introductions of non-native species can displace native flora and fauna, altering community compositions and disrupting ecosystem services. One often-overlooked vector for such introductions is the release of aquarium organisms into aquatic ecosystems. Following detrimental aquarium-release invasions by the “killer alga” Caulerpa taxifolia, aquarium hobbyists and professions began promoting the use of other genera of macroalgae as “safe” alternatives. The most popular of these marine aquarium macroalgae, the genus Chaetomorpha, is analyzed here for invasion risk. Mitigation strategies are also evaluated. I found that the propensity for reproduction by vegetative fragmentation displayed by aquarium strains of Chaetomorpha poses a significant invasion threat—fragments of aquarium Chaetomorpha are able to survive from sizes as small as 0.5 mm in length, or one intact, live cell. Fragments of this size and larger are generated in large quantities in online and retail purchases of Chaetomorpha, and introduction of these fragments would likely result in viable individuals for establishment in a variety of geographic and seasonal environmental conditions. Mitigation of invasion risk was assessed in two ways—rapid response to a potential introduction by chemical eradication and prevention through safe hobbyist disposal. I tested the effectiveness of five chemicals used as algicides and found that acetic acid was highly effective at limiting survival and growth of aquarium Chaetomorpha. Chlorine bleach, copper sulfate and rock salt were effective at limiting growth but were inconsistent or ineffective in reducing survival of algal fragments. The algicide Sonar limited neither survival nor growth. If aquarium strains of Chaetomorpha are released, chemical eradication presents a viable management strategy, particularly through the use of acetic acid. A more cost-effective strategy, however, would be preventing introductions; thus safe alternatives to release were determined for hobbyist disposal of unwanted or excess aquarium Chaetomorpha. Here I present the minimum exposure durations necessary to induce full mortality of aquarium Chaetomorpha through boiling, microwaving, freezing, desiccation and exposure to freshwater. Hobbyist disposal by any of these methods would constitute safe alternatives to introduction of the alga into natural environments. Such preventative measures will inform outreach campaigns in order to limit the potential for aquarium-release introduction.

Abstract:
The Aquarium and Marine Research Center is an innovative project whose purpose is to show and teach about Peruvian and international marine life. An architectural intervention like this is unique and culturally necessary because our country doesn’t count with an adequate infrastructure to exhibit our marine life. Also, it teaches and promotes the idea of taking care our oceans, rivers, etc. Because of this the aquarium has lots of educational and interactive areas for all ages. This project is located at Costa Verde, in an abandoned terrain with a lot of promise because it could be the catalyst of a public urban project. The aquarium design doesn’t take hierarchy over the terrain or its context, it provides public spaces for all users. Its designed to be visually impactful and didactic for the visitor, surrounding you in marine species in the transparent tunnel or by visiting the sea water pools that uses ocean water coming directly from the ocean. In conclusion, the project has the roll of culturally enriching everyone that visits it, while it tries to revive and equip a forgotten space in the Costa Verde’s beaches.

Abstract:
The first three of a series of new generation satellites operating at L-band microwave frequencies have been launch in the last decade. L-band is particularly sensitive to the presence of water content in the scene under observation, being considered the optimal bandwidth for measuring the Earth's global surface soil moisture (SM) over land and sea surface salinity (SSS) over oceans. Monitoring these two essential climate variables is needed to further improve our understanding of the Earth's water and energy cycles. Additionally, remote sensing at L-band has been proved useful for monitoring the stability in ice sheets and measuring sea ice thickness. The ESA's Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS, 2009-2017) is the first mission specifically launched to monitor SM and SSS. It carries on-board a novel synthetic aperture radiometer with multi-angular and full-polarization capabilities. NASA's Aquarius (2011-2015) was the second mission, devoted to SSS monitoring with a combined real aperture radiometer/scatterometer system that allows correcting for sea surface roughness. NASA's Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP, 2015-2018) is the second mission dedicated to measure SM. It carries on-board a real aperture full-polarimetric radiometer and a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) for enhanced spatial resolution and freeze/thaw detection. This Ph.D. Thesis is focused on analyzing the geophysical information that can be obtained from L-band SMOS, Aquarius and SMAP observations. The research activities are structured as follows: -Inter-comparison of radiometer brightness temperatures at selected targets. A novel methodology to measure the consistency between SMOS and Aquarius radiometric data over the entire dynamic range of observations (land, ice and ocean) is proposed. It allows detecting spatial/temporal differences or biases without latitudinal limitations neither cross-overs. This is a necessary step to combine observations from different instruments in a long term dataset for environmental, meteorological, hydrological or climatological studies. -Ice thickness effects on passive remote sensing of Antarctic continental ice. The relationship between Antarctic ice thickness spatial variations and changes detected by SMOS and Aquarius measurements is explored. The emissivity of Antarctica is analyzed to disentangle the role of the geophysical contributions (snow layers at different depths and subglacial lakes) to the observed signal. The stability of the L-band signal in the East Antarctic Plateau, calibration/validation site for microwave satellite missions, is assessed. -Microwave/optical synergy for multi-scale soil moisture sensing. The relationship of SM and land surface temperature (LST) dynamics is evaluated to better understand the fundamental SM-LST link through evapotranspiration and thermal inertia physical processes. A new approach to measure the critical soil moisture from time-series of spaceborne SM and LST is proposed. The synergistic use of SMOS SM and remotely sensed LST for refining SM disaggregation algorithms is also analyzed. -Comparison of passive and active microwave vegetation parameters. Recent research has shown that microwave vegetation opacity, sensitive to biomass and water content, and albedo, related to canopy structure, can be retrieved from passive L-band observations. The relationships between these two parameters and radar-derived vegetation descriptors have been explored using airborne observations from the SMAP Validation Experiment 2012 (SMAPVEX12). The obtained relations could allow for improved SM retrievals in active-passive systems, and also to estimate the vegetation properties at high resolution using SAR observations. The Ph.D. Thesis has been developed within the activities of the Barcelona Expert Centre (BEC). The presented results contribute to the use of L-band remote sensing in different scientific disciplines such as climate, cryosphere, hydrology and ecology.

Abstract:

In addition to these senses construction processes, it was analyzed the image schemes (EVANS; GREEN, 2006; GIBBS; COLSTON apud GEERAERTS, 2006). From this foundation, were found signs classified as iconic-metonymic signs, iconic- metonymic-embodied signs, according to Nunes (2014), and iconic-embodied. It was studied image schemas in signs and classifiers. Considering that these signs and classifiers are present in music interpretations, its also analyzed procedures and techniques used in Libras translations and interpretations. From the analysis, it was found among the cognitive processes at these interpretations that the main conceptual metaphors in Portuguese remain in Libras interpretations. However, in Libras, a new metaphor was postulated. Thus, this research provides questions about cognitive processes in signs and classifiers in Libras interpretations

Abstract:
Many simulation games feature realistic mechanics that are highly representational (Adams 2014, p. 37) and closely recreate real activities or processes. Simulation games where the player keep artificial pets in their own environment (e.g. virtual aquarium) often feature abstract mechanics (Adams 2014, p. 37). The question was how players would experience an abstract simulation game where players keep artificial pets (fish), with realistic mechanics that are more representational. A simple game prototype was created based on existing games within the abstract life-simulation genre, which respondents playtested for 15 minutes. Data was collected through a short survey prior to each playtest, and semi-structured interviews after respondents had tested the artefact. Results indicated (among other things) that it was possible to translate many affordances of real aquariums and fish into mechanics. Whether they were perceived or not depended on the personality of the respondent, and did not have any correlation between knowledge about fish or gaming habits.

Abstract:
Microwave radiometers are used to measure blackbody microwave emissions emitted by natural targets. Radiative transfer theory provides a well founded physical relationship between the atmosphere and surface geophysical parameters and the brightness temperature measured by these radiometers. The atmospheric brightness temperature is proportional to the integral of the microwave absorption of water vapor, oxygen, and liquid water between the top of the atmosphere and the surface. Inverse radiative transfer models use to retrieve the water vapor, cloud liquid and oxygen content in the atmosphere are very well known; however, the retrieval of rain rate in the atmosphere is still a challenge. This project presents a theoretical basis for the rain rate retrieval algorithm, which will be implemented in the Aquarius/SAC-D Microwave Radiometer (MWR). This algorithm was developed based on the radiative transfer model theory for a single layer atmosphere using four WindSat channels. Transmissivity due to liquid water (rain and cloud liquid water) is retrieved from the four channel brightness temperatures, and a statistical regression is performed to relate the rain rate, rain physical temperature and rain height to the liquid water transmissivities at 24 GHz and 37 GHz. Empirical validation results are presented using the WindSat radiometer observations.

Abstract:
The Aquarius/SAC-D joint international science mission, between the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of United States and the Argentine Space Agency (Comision Nacional de Actividades Espaciales, CONAE), was launched on a polar-orbiting satellite on June 10, 2011. This mission of discovery will provide measurements of the global sea surface salinity, which contributes to understanding climatic changes in the global water cycle and how these variations in uence the general ocean circulation. The Microwave Radiometer (MWR), a three channel Dicke radiometer operating at 23.8 GHz H-Pol and 36.5 GHz V-& H-Pol provided by CONAE, will complement Aquarius (NASA's L-band radiometer/scatterometer) by providing simultaneous spatially collocated environmental measurements such as water vapor, cloud liquid water, surface wind speed, rain rate and sea ice concentration. This dissertation focuses on the overall radiometric calibration of MWR instrument. Which means establishing a transfer function that relates the instrument output to the antenna brightness temperature (Tb). To achieve this goal, the dissertation describes a microwave radiative transfer model of the instrument and validates it using the laboratory and thermal-vacuum test data. This involves estimation of the losses and physical temperature profile in the path from the receiver to each antenna feed-horn for all the receivers. As the pre-launch laboratory tests can only provide a simulated environment which is very different from the operational environment in space, an on-orbit calibration of the instrument is very important. Inter-satellite radiometric cross-calibration of MWR using the Naval Research Laboratory's multi-frequency polarimetric microwave radiometer, WindSat, on board the Coriolis satellite is also an important part of this dissertation. Cross-calibration between two different satellite instruments require normalization of Tb's to account for the frequency and incidence angle di erence between the instruments. Also inter-satellite calibration helps to determine accurate antenna pattern correction coefficients and other small instrument biases.

Ornamental aquarium industry has developed for many years in Taiwan. In recent years, the government starts to emphasize on this industry. From the beginning of 2009, the Taiwan Aquarium Expo has attracted nearly 15 million visitors per year. In addition to the exhibitors of live fish, there were many participators of aquarium equipment manufacturer. There have not been many studies on aquarium consumers, so the characteristics of aquarium consumers are still not well understood. It is important to analyze the questionnaire data explored the demand of consumers in recent four years to provide more information for aquarium equipment and accessories industries. Four investigations were conducted at Taiwan Aquarium Expo in 2013 and 2014 in Taipei and 2015 and 2016 in Kaohsiung, respectively. The collected information was general personal data, purchasing behavior characteristic of consumer and product. There are 1830 questionnaires totally in the four years. Cross-Linked table and Pearson's chi-squared test were used to analyze the structure of the consumer characteristics and realize whether there are differences in the consumption of different characteristic interval. The results indicated that the characteristics of consumers with higher monthly income are: longer experience of raising ornamental fish, more likely to try the aquascaping in the future, the factors of selecting location are transportation convenience and sellers’ proficiency. On the contrary, the characteristics of consumers with lower monthly income are: more likely to breed ornamental fish and other creatures, cheaper price is the factor of selecting location, bottleneck for raising ornamental fish is the expense. Abstract:
Marine aquariums are excellent venues for accomplishing the purposes of marine education, and school field trips conducted at non-formal settings continue to be an important part of K-12 education. The purpose of this study was to provide not only quantitative data regarding the extent and quality of marine aquarium field trips conducted by elementary schoolteachers in Seoul, South Korea, but also to provide a qualitative description of marine aquarium education conducted in the USA and Canada. A Web survey designed to examine Korean teachers' experiences and perspectives on aquarium field trips identified several concerns regarding Korean marine aquarium education, and a case study conducted at three aquariums in the USA and Canada described the characteristics and qualities of marine aquarium education at those aquaria. Recommendations for both Korean aquaria's educational roles and Korean elementary schools' successful field trips to aquaria are presented with the goal of improving the quality of Korean marine aquarium education.

Jordan, Ingrid Elizabeth. "Coral propagation for aquarium specimens." Thesis, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/4681.

Abstract:
Coral reefs are being destroyed and degraded by natural and anthropogenic processes. Live corals are becoming increasingly popular as marine aquarium specimens, in both the commercial and private sectors, leading to the degradation of coral reefs. This often has serious economic implications for the fishing, aquarium and tourist industries. It is clear that there is a need for the management and protection of these fragile ecosystems. The artificial propagation of coral is desirable as it will alleviate the demand for wild coral specimens, and will also provide a stock for the rehabilitation of damaged reefs. Although corals are being propagated worldwide by hobbyists, reports on their work are mainly anecdotal and there is little in the scientific literature on the specific requirements for optimal growth rates and survival in suitable coral species. This study thus focused on developing techniques to propagate a range of appropriate coral species and to promote their optimal growth. The results revealed that different morphological groups of scleractinian corals require specialised techniques of fragmentation and attachment to ensure survival. The corals were broken using a hammer and chisel. Attachment techniques varied from the use of superglue (which is widely used in the United States), to thermoplastic glue. The mean mortality using superglue was 73% (n=120, ±0.167), using epoxy, 62% (n=120, ±0.127) and with thermoplastic glue it was 11% (n=120, ±0.108) Superglue was extremely difficult to work with and proved ineffective, especially when attempting to glue uneven surfaces. Certain species did not survive using this adhesive due to exposure of the coral to air. The most effective method of rapid attachment was the use of thermoplastic glue that set rapidly underwater. The use of electrolysis to promote the attachment of coral nubbins was tested as an alternative to the various adhesives. This method increased the survival of the nubbins and eliminated exposure to air. It has proven suitable for both coral propagation and in situ reef rehabilitation. Growth experiments revealed that the manipulation of current flow, light and the addition of different feeds had different effects on the growth rates of selected candidate species. A suite of optima was thus developed for each species. The majority of species grew best in a bi-directional current flow, with yeast as feed, under actinic blue light. An experiment that combined the optimal current flow, feed and light conditions, revealed that the majority of species grew best under mixed light with yeast as feed. The trade in corals is sensitive in terms of their handling, transportation and CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) status. Having established the viability of their propagation, consideration was given to appropriate regulatory and marketing procedures to accommodate this sensitivity of the cultivated material.

In 2005, the Council of Agriculture (COA) considered ornamental fish industry into the plan- "Quality agriculture and health excellence program " one of the national project of six major emerging industries. With the improvement of people's living standards, the demand for leisure and healing industry has been increasing demand gradually. Colorful ornamental fish becomes to be the third largest pet market after dog and cats market in the world. This study aims to investigate the ornamental fish industry and the critical successful factors of management for an aquarium store. This research further conducts a qualitative case study through field observation and in-depth individual interviews, combined with SWOT analysis and the generation of industry business model. The result found that the key factors to successful management for the case are mainly as the following three points: " building own brand image through improving product quality and strengthening customer service, building good relationship with key suppliers, integrating store professional service with mobile marketing." However, the study also found that social media marketing, live webcast and difficult to cultivate professional appear to be major threats for the case company.

Abstract:
Educators in zoo sand a quaria today present general information in an attempt to educate visitors about animals and conservation issues. This presentation of biological information is isolated from the any observable animal activity in the exhibit. The Vancouver Aquarium has a different approach to visitor learning. This thesis examines one of its innovative approaches to visitor education designed to initiate visitor involvement with animals in the exhibits. This innovative approach uses changeable , handwritten whiteboards to highlight new animal events in the Vancouver Aquarium. Qualitative and quantitative methods were used to investigate the effect of these whiteboards on the behaviour of groups of visitors at an exhibit through observations and short group interviews. Sixty-two percent of the visitors observed in the study used the whiteboard. The average time whiteboard users spent viewing the exhibit (57.06 seconds) was significantly greater (t = 36.65, df = 129, p < 0.001) than the time non-whiteboard users spent viewing the exhibit (25.94 seconds). Whiteboard users also exhibited a significantly higher level of interactivity (the number of behaviours , pointing, peering , conversing and rereading the whiteboard an individual demonstrates while at an exhibit) than the non-whiteboard users (X2 = 237.16, p < 0.01). Interview comments revealed that whiteboard users understood the Vancouver Aquarium's intent to convey real, relevant, current and changing information about animals within the exhibits using whiteboards.

Preparation of hydrophobic silica-based surfaces with high transmittance via sol-gel process by adding polymers into the precursor solution has been developed.Surface roughness of the films were obtained by removing the organic polymer from the organic-inorganic hybrid film at high temperature and then the hydrophobic groups bonded onto the surfaces were obtained by self-assembly modification. In order to realize the relationship between the phase separation of organic/inorganic species and the surface roughness, the hybridation of polymers PEG and alkoxysilane were discussed in this study. The hydrophobic silica-based on surface with high transmittance was also preparedby using silica-PEG hybrid films. The silica-based was annealed, contact angle of the film surface increased from 20 degrees to 130 degrees and transmittance up to 90%. Finally, the hydrophobic silica-based films were investigated by using TEOS and different structures of polymeric species. Keyword:hydrophobic
