Full textThe present study focused on responses of purchasing and supply chain professionals faced with certain ethical situations. Individual (personal demographics, religiosity, ethical ideologies), psychological (moral potency), issue contingent (moral intensity), and organizational (firm size, activity, code of ethics) variables are hypothesized to the four stages of ethical decision making (EDM) including perceived importance of ethical issue, recognition, judgment, and intention in a purchasing context. The current study majorly employed a quantitative experimental research design. Firstly, six purchasing scenarios representing six dimensions of moral intensity were constructed and validated through detailed discussions with purchasing experts. Moral intensity dimensions were manipulated through scenarios. Responses were collected from 364 purchasing professionals for all six scenarios by conducting a survey. Firstly, all categorical variables and manipulations were examined through ANOVA. Then overall model was then tested in a multivariate space by using SEM path analysis for all six scenarios. The variance analysis revealed significant findings for moral intensity, religiosity, ethical ideologies, and moral potency and are heterogeneous across personal and organizational demographics. Moreover, the SEM analysis largely confirmed that moral intensity and moral potency are the key antecedents to EDM stages either independently or in the nomological serially mediated framework of EDM (perceived importance, recognition, judgment, and intention). Finally, the present research concluded with future directions for researchers and implications for managers as well

Full textThis thesis is a problematical for ethics. Whilst wanting to determine the concept of corporate social responsibility, we linked the fields of sociology, linguistics, philosophy, and communications with the fields of applications-namely, a mixture of quantitative and qualitative methods, with the aim of validating the following postulation: that the new citizenship is based on the abandonment of a mythical communication leading to an ethical communication which calls for a change in its relationship to responsibility, development and science. Our quantitative investigation proposes, with a selection of companies in Aquitaine, to account for their design of ethics through their practical application of concepts such as that of sustainable development or fair trade. A qualitative body of press articles supplements our analysis. In a society which defines performance as a central value, does the pragmatic framework of values which aims at replacing the constraint, fulfil the same function? Does "Ethics" per se not become a new categorical imperative with political and economic views, bringing a new response to risk and creates a sense of progress in a company which considers, for the time being, that the only possible attitude of precaution will guarantee it? Up to what point could freedom of expression versus freedom of reception see the emergence of a new form of responsibility from the new rules of rhetoric? We conclude that this ethical communication is now assimilated to an exercise of argumentative style where the consensus becomes an ideal of communication -even a myth

Full textEvery production system has a procedure for deciding when to have material delivered or produced. These decisions are referred to as lot-sizing decisions. Performance of lot-sizing techniques is generally evaluated on the basis of cost effectiveness and computational time. Nevertheless, this static evaluation ignores the manner in which decisions are implemented in practice, when demands vary. By considering demand variability, lot-sizing techniques do not exhibit the same degree of instability in planned orders. Therefore, we propose another measure of performance we call robustness. We define the robustness of a lot-sizing model as the degree of stability in planned orders it provides, in response to changes in demand estimates. We first study the robustness and cost-effectiveness of models in both single-level and multi-level contexts. Simulations show there exists an inverse relationship between robustness and optimality. Second, we improve an optimal multi-level lot-sizing model (steinberg, napier-management science, 1980), in term of computational time. We write an analytical procedure for eliminating the variables which optimal value is always null. Simulations suggest the effectiveness of that procedure: reduction of the size of the optimization programm implies a reduction in computational time

Full textThroughout the 1980ies, reflexives studies on ethics have widely increased in the global corporate world. The growing wealth of publications, the mutiplying of lectures and symposia devoted to this theme on the managerial scene are currently underlying the relevancy of this topical issue. Nevertheless, although the principal of an ethical approach is increasingly accepted in business life and even taken for granted, what does it include ? how is it exercised ? the purpose of this discertation is to make the issue clear by giving an accurate answer to these two questions. On the theoretical point of view the various traditional and contemporary arguments providing principals to management shall be therefore here presented. On the practical side, the intents and concerns as managerial policy shall be then analysed. Forty five such managers have been accordingly screened during specific research canvassing. As a result, four single ethical profiles and two types of organizational ethical climates have been defined. Hence, the goals of the presented research still fairly new in france have been made : relevant answering data facts and notions, were allowed to be propounded

Full textThe pursuit of ethics as an objective obliges management to seek meansof improving it while, in articulating this process with the general objectives of the firm, including those ethics oriented to draw benefits. Our research reveals the difficulty, usually downplayed, to anticipate the influence of ethics on the players. It stresses that the explicit contradictions that characterize the different theoretical approaches of this field aren't expressed by processes clearly dissimilar. The first part of the study proposes a theoretical frame. In the literature, ethics is understood as an intermediate objective that determines economic success, and gives relevance to the managerial processes it implies. In an other antagonistic paradigm the ethics of the firm is necessarily a finality. Improving ethics means reducing the array of actions that can be accepted. Ethics is independent of economic success. The assumption that different strategies of firms lay on these two bases of logic constitutes the foundation of our field work. In this, we attempt to verify that these approaches are in power. The second part, empirical in nature, comprises two case studies. In the former, a company is studied as it is in the process of implementing a code of ethics following the acquisition of a competitor. Ethics is never wanted for itself but only for his alleged effects on the compatibility between actions of the members of the firm and, therefore, economical success. The latter consisted of an organization in the specific period wherein an ethical dilemma was identified. It appears that ethics drives actors to compose responses in situ and that the risk is the reduction of control that organizations exert on their members

Full textMorals refer to what relates to habits, human beings’ attitudes, as well as codes of conduct and their justifications. For some years now, companies have been publicly asserting their commitment to moral values, in order to improve their image. Some of them attempt to impose them upon their employees, sometimes subject to penalties. The question is whether employees, bound to perform the contract of employment in good faith, according to the provisions of Articles 1134 of the Civil Code and L. 1222-1 of the Labour Code, are obliged to adhere to the moral values of the company which employs them? On the one hand, some commercially oriented companies issue codes of ethics, along with whistle blowing policies, for which the question of their legality is raised. Companies of an ideological nature also ask their employees to abide by moral standards which the former aim to defend. On the other hand, labour law also requires that employers and their employees comply with moral obligations. Some of them relate specifically to each of the co-contractors. Thus, employers have the obligation to respect the dignity, as well as the fundamental rights and freedoms of employees, in particular in their personal life. The latter must avoid, in principle, engaging in behaviour which is contrary to commonly accepted morals in our society, and creating characterised disorder within the company. Employers and employees also have joint obligations with moral connotations, such as obligations relating to loyalty or security

Full textNowadays, working relationships are more closely linked to a latent conflict and, at best, to negotiation, than they are to a dialogue. Consequently, we have to set up a responsible management. It appears necessary to question, ethically speaking, relationships and communications in spite of differences and divergences. What is at stake stands as essential for management policies: it is to institute a real social "dialogue" in which the interpersonal reciprocity would be prized, in order to prevent bringing working relationships down to a power struggle regulated by a mere play of concessions. Linked to the dialogism concept, ethical problems will be interested in communicational practices within companies. Between the concepts of negotiation and dialogue, ethics invite economic interests and human concerns to be conciliated. Social "dialogue" has much to create, providing that companies aim to realize their ambitions thanks to moralized communications

Full text"Just in time" has been a fashionable expression in management literature and has been used by many manufacturing firms during the last ten years. Inside the firm, J. I. T. Is first defined as a philosophy that can be applied everywhere and above all as a collection of ad hoc techniques. When J. I. T. Is applied to a procurements, you can observe various results because for "J. I. T. Purchasing policies", unlike in the production field, there are no formal methods. To help the buyer implement these policies there are only some inductive approaches based on Japanese experience and which propose a single best way for which the transferability to the context of French firms poses a problem. Netherless, faced with this methodological gap the practitioner must decide. . . The first objective of this research was to recognise the different elements observed to complete our understanding of practices hidden under the general terms of "J. I. T. Purchasing" and "tense flow suppliers" but also to identify the types of action which provided the most ambitious results in the way of J. I. T. To reach this objective we defined J. I. T. Not in a static way to achieve a particular result but in a dynamic way as a factor to provoke changes in materials management inside and outside the firm. The data collected from professionel buyers enabled us to define their practices. The second objective was to adopt a deductive approach to define the most suitable buying behavior in a J. I. T. Purchasing relationship. So we developed a framework using relational theories and applying them to the context created by the development of J. I. T. Purchasing expectations

The two central hypotheses concern with the relation between buying structurel dimension and buying behavior, the relation between buying conjonctural dimension and buying behavior. The empirical study ou 77 firms permit the validation of the 2 hypotheses. Lesing this frameworle allows to: segment the industrial markets an this basis, describe the segments end estimate the segment's potenciality

Full textIn business markets, the companies currently develop long term relationships for better satisfying their customers' expectations. In this context, the "buyer-salesperson" interpersonal relationships intensify. Our work proposes a model of satisfaction of professional buyers with regard to their relations with the salesperson. For that, we based our research on marketing, social psychology and psychology literature. After having built the measuring instruments, we tested the research assumptions of the conceptual model. The results indicate that buyer's satisfaction influences interfirms' long-term orientation, and is influenced by the characteristics of "buyer-salesperson" interpersonal relationships and the individual characteristics of the buyer and the salesperson. In synthesis, this research shows the central role interpersonal relationships in the development of interfirms' relationships

Full textSupplier relationship management (SRM) in a context of globalization both the selection of suppliers around the world - global sourcing - and the implementation of procurement process adapted to the context - international purchasing -. This research focuses on the relationship from the side of the "buying group". The research question addressed is how to adjust the relationship, given the complexity of international purchasing situations. The conceptual framework has mobilized the "interaction model" from the Industrial Marketing and Purchasing Group (Håkansson, 1982). The design of the research builds on a methodological exploration of practices conducted nearby twenty-three purchasing managers who can be qualified as "experts" in international business. Our results have highlighted predictable adjustments of the relationship, learning and control. An additional result emerged from the investigation: “unexpected” situations. A new analysis of interviews and three case studies of SME from the sample has led us to strengthen and characterize the phenomenon of "unexpected". Adjustments needed are immediate, so another kind of management is required. That is possible through the concept of "improvisation". Managerial contributions of this thesis emphasize the importance of steering two dimensions of SRM, behaviors and processes

Full textFaced with a production context in constant evolution, car manufacturers need to control their supply chain. Nowadays production systems are sa complicated that it is difficult to evaluate globally their performance, from the car order to the delivery. Our works contribute improve flexibility of logistics and to increase the reactivity in case of supply hazards. We propose so a supply flows modeling in purpose of simulation. In a systemic framewework, we propose also a UML meta-model of the flows, then instantiate to the PSA Supply Chain. Relevant indicators are then proposed for the global performance of logistic system. This modeling is implemented in simulation software (SimAppro) of ail the PSA Supplly Chain, connected ta the enterprise information systems. We propose and use next a validation process of the tool. Finally we apply our works to industrial problem. His aim is to answer of the just inventory security level without changing the Quality of Service. Results obtain with heuristics (decisional aspect) coupled to the simulator SimAppro(evaluation) let expecting the possibility of global decreasing of the inventory security level, with an increase produced quality

Full textThis dissertation provides an analysis of logistical costs of supplying and purchasing for businesses in the French Overseas Departments (FOD) and offers suggestions on how to control them. Those businesses operate in a context in which information exchange with intermediaries in the logistical chain is asymmetrical. "Door to door" logistical costs include all transport and Customs clearance operations from suppliers to recipients. A study of those costs, based on applying statistical tools to a sample of local businesses, revealed that logistical operations have historically been handled by transport commissioners, costing businesses additional agency expenses. The asymmetrical structure of information exchange that has been detected at both ends of the logistical chain – about costs of transport to the main point of departure and at the other end of the chain, at Customs clearance – add to the difficulty of controlling logistical costs. Due to their lack of clarity on relationships with service providers, European and national Customs regimes laws are of limited use to businesses. In this institutional context, business holders lack the complete information and decision-making tools necessary to effectively control logistical costs, and to design purchasing and transport strategies. Without the benefit of appropriate information and the power to negotiate logistical operations with their partners, business holders' rationality is limited and they are unable to make well informed choices. In order to control the lack of asymmetry in information exchange, businesses in the FOD need the help of two types of decision-making tools. The first is quantitative. It is based on a calculation of logistical costs for each type of container, thus helping to evaluate « door to door » transport costs for imported goods. The second type is qualitative. It proposes setting up a cooperation system, by which information would be gathered and centralized by a committee aiming at reducing the financial repercussions of opportunistic behaviours on the part of certain partners in the logistical chain

Full textThe concept of responsible purchasing takes up, alongside new regulations, a central place in the setting up of companies responsible strategy. However, twenty years of research, no overall measure of its performance is proposed. The impact of responsible actions in purchasing on financial performance remains to be explored. This work puts the two performances in perspective in the same model, and examines the mediating role of three intangible resources (human capital, innovation and reputation) between the tangible resources of the company and the performance of responsible purchasing. The results of this work – following the analysis of 1918 observations, in 18 European countries, from 2011 to 2017, from the main databases (Vigeo Eiris, Institute reputation, Infinancials, and Thomson Reuters)- confirm the hypothesis that resources — including human capital — contribute to improving the performance of responsible purchasing, which in turn impacts the corporate financial performance

Full textTransparency in public procurement management is increasingly needed due to the growth of public expenditure. The mechanisms put in place to safeguard the principles of transparency and ethics are to be constantly refined. In Morocco, according to the official discourse, the country has decided to adopt the international standards of transparency in public procurement; insofar it constitutes the framework of the public action. Hence, it has undergone several reforms.Accordingly, it is within this context that our specific choice to study this subject emanates from.It is therefore important to understand the complexity and challenges of transparency in the management of public procurement.Public procurement is probably one of the areas where regulation is strongly binding. This regulation oversees, more likely than elsewhere, all the actors' behaviours and management practices.Indeed, the dominant logic in the purchasing function is a logic of legal security that overshadows the search for efficiency and economic performance.Throughout our work, we have tried, firstly, to highlight the progress of legislative reform and the contribution of administrative justice in promoting transparency in public procurement in Morocco. A comparison to other regulations seemed useful to inform us of any gaps and was an opportunity to learn from the experiences of the so-considered developed countries.Secondly, we tried to propose exploring the major problems that hinder the promotion of transparency in public procurement in particular and ethics in management of public life in general

Full textThis doctoral work aims at knowing better the conceptions of the managers of the CSR in the Lebanese banks as well as the interest which they grant to their stakeholders by analyzing their managerial practices. The social responsibility became a very wide-spread concept in the environment of the business and the western academic domains. We were interested in the characteristics of the CSR in renowned banks to be successful in an unstable economic and social environment due to the political conflicts in the presence of an annihilated government. Our research concerns the first twenty banks in Lebanon which total of their asset represents 95% of the total asset of the effective commercial banks in Lebanon between 2010 and 2012. This sector is considered as the main catalyst of growth in an open and liberal economic environment. We opted for the qualitative research and we leaned on an interpretativiste epistemology and an approach of research by hybrid exploration in an abductive logic. We have to say that the expression "CSR" was badly interpreted by certain interviewed managers. Their speeches revealed by the interviews, as well as annual reports and web sites assimilate to misleading advertising and philanthropic actions. We were able to notice that the said CSR actions in Lebanon take generic or peripheral forms according to Martinet and Payaud (2008)

Full textThis dissertation focuses on the search for the possible normative foundations of corporate social responsibility (CSR). This is an in-depth analysis of the notion of a standard, its function as a management tool, and its limits outside any ethics. The subject is treated in a transdisciplinary manner : the theoretical contribution of management sciences is based on the empirical study of law revealing utopias, feasible or not, under CSR. Are these so-called ethical responsibilities, a new ideology, a kind of social dream which cares little for the actual steps in the construction of a new society? or are they a new power okknowledge, a project of political organization, based on the axiology of human rights? The study of the place of law in the CSR is a way to revisit many theories of organizations, including on governance, stakeholders, democracy, sustainable development, risk and responsibility. This study concludes with the need for prior compliance with the law, in the creation of the standard and use of management tools. The object of the research is at the crossroads between management and legal sciences. Nevertheless, it allows a critical reflection on the flexibility of the rule of law and regulation by standards which have become more and more soft and fuzzy, causing the privatization of the global economic system. Taking the measure of the normative changes in global governance, this dissertation proposes to overcome the challenge of conflicts of norms, by introducing a new ethic of responsibility. In France, the idea would be to design the corporate social responsibility like the legal fiction of corporate citizenship. A true extension of preventive responsibility would be born by the legal entities under their sphere of influence

Full textPurchasing Social Responsibility (PSR) is a topic of current interest. Recent literature development on this topic reflects the increasing interest amongst researchers. However, the existing literature fails to provide a comprehensive understanding of the PSR implementation process, which is also an issue of interest from a managerial perspective. This thesis aims to address this gap by identifying the antecedents (drivers and barriers) to PSR adoption process. We provide an original conceptual framework, which identifies intra-organizational antecedents to a sustaining adoption and sheds light on the important role of collaboration in buyer-supplier relationship. The empirical methodology is based on five case-studies with companies at different stages of PSR adoption process. The results show that intra-organizational antecedents play a critical role in achieving the set-up and operating phases, while inter-organizational antecedents (buyer-supplier collaboration) appear to be essential for the sustaining phase. This research provides comprehensive guidance for activating these leverages throughout the PSR implementation process, and it helps firms identify their level of PSR adoption

Full textThe global subject of the thesis is in line with the continuous improvement method withinindustrial company. Our target is to analyse what would be the answer coming from thepurchasing organization to interface with New Project Development (NPD). Basically, toinsure their future industrial company must integrate their supplier base in NPD phases. Our study is based around six main axes : the context and the target of NPD, NPD globalorganization, human resources (project buyer tasks and competences), the relationshipbetween purchasing and suppliers inside Early Supplier Involvement (ESI) processesincluding a special focus on innovation and responsible approach, purchasing process tomanage NPD and finally future evolution (continuous improvement). Those axes are includedin four parts. The first part describes current issues in industrial industry in terms of quality, production capacity, permanent structure evolution, customer expectation and their impacton the purchasing organization. The second part shows the bibliographical research aboutthe state of the art and makes a deeper analysis of the first part topics. The third partpresents the research method chosen (DELPHI), how the questionnaire has been createdand the data collection and analysis processes (date code). Finally, the fourth part is fullydedicated to the 14 expert interview analysis. We introduce 13 recommendations to improvethe purchasing performance within the NPD. In order to implement those recommendationswe suggest to follow rules describe in a special guide.

Full textAfter analysing to caracterize the reverse marketing, we compare this process with the partnership process. This study allows on the one hand, to suggest a new analysis as concerns partnership: a reverse marketing perspective, and on the other hand to define the variables that have an effect on the two types of purchasing management. Factors analysis enabled us to measure the reverse marketing and the partnership of eighty-three companies, and then to find procedures clusters based on these two processes. Analysis of variance were made inorder ot test the impact of the product-risk, the market-risk, the risk of wasting time and money. The partner-risk and the importance of trust in rever se marketing and partnership. The product-risk only influences the reverse marketing, whereas the market risk influences both purchasing management types. So, risks do not seem to get bigger when the buyer uses partnership compared with to use of reverse marketing. This statement should make him increase long term relationship with the upstream marketT

Full textLiterature points out a lack of recognition of the purchasing function, its difficuties to establish collaborative relationships with operationnal managers, and its inability to legitimize itself otherwise than by reducing costs. At the same time, professional associations urge buyers to professionalize by renewing their roles, their practices and their links with members of the organization. Building on this observation, we refer to the interactionist sociology of the professions’ research and Abbott’s framework on professional jurisdictions (1988, 2003) to enhance the understanding of buyers’ professional dynamics and how they take advantage of intra and inter-organizational control systems to improve their position in the governance of buyer-supplier partnerships. Through a preliminary qualitative study and two case studies, we first identify two dominant logics of partnership management in which financial performance is either legitimate or seeking legitimacy. Then, in each context, we describe the professional projects that shape the jurisdictional solutions and reflect the cognitive universes of buyers. Finaly, we analyze the rhetoric used by buyers and highlight the jurisdictional arrangements they established with other professional groups

Full textThis thesis develops optimization methods for Supply Chain Management and is focused on the flexibility defined as the ability to deliver a service or a product to a costumer in an uncertain environment. The research was conducted throughout a partnership between Argon Consulting, which is an independent consulting firm in Supply Chain Operations and the École des Ponts ParisTech. In this thesis, we explore three topics that are encountered by Argon Consulting and its clients and that correspond to three different levels of decision (long-term, mid-term and short-term).When companies expand their product portfolio, they must decide in which plants to produce each item. This is a long-term decision since once it is decided, it cannot be easily changed. More than a assignment problem where one item is produced by a single plant, this problem consists in deciding if some items should be produced on several plants and by which plants. This is motivated by a highly uncertain demand. So, in order to satisfy the demand, the assignment must be able to balance the workload between plants. We call this problem the multi-sourcing of production. Since it is not a repeated problem, it is essential to take into account the risk when making the multi-sourcing decision. We propose a generic model that includes the technical constraints of the assignment and a risk-averse constraint based on risk measures from financial theory. We develop an algorithm and a heuristic based on standard tools from Operations Research and Stochastic Optimization to solve the multi-sourcing problem and we test their efficiency on real datasets. Before planning the production, some macroscopic indicators must be decided at mid-term level such as the quantity of raw materials to order or the size of produced lots. Continuous-time inventory models are used by some companies but these models often rely on a trade-off between holding costs and setups costs. These latters are fixed costs paid when production is launched and are hard to estimate in practice. On the other hand, at mid-term level, flexibility of the means of production is already fixed and companies easily estimate the maximal number of setups. Motivated by this observation, we propose extensions of some classical continuous-time inventory models with no setup costs and with a bound on the number of setups. We used standard tools from Continuous Optimization to compute the optimal macroscopic indicators. Finally, planning the production is a short-term decision consisting in deciding which items must be produced by the assembly line during the current period. This problem belongs to the well-studied class of Lot-Sizing Problems. As for mid-term decisions, these problems often rely on a trade-off between holding and setup costs. Basing our model on industrial considerations, we keep the same point of view (no setup cost and a bound on the number of setups) and propose a new model. Although these are short-term decisions, production decisions must take future demand into account, which remains uncertain. We solve our production planning problem using standard tools from Operations Research and Stochastic Optimization, test the efficiency on real datasets, and compare it to heuristics used by Argon Consulting's clients

Full textAt the heart of the company's strategy for a long time, and compounded by globalisation, innovation is becoming increasingly collaborative, open to external organisations such as suppliers who can play a prominent role in innovations (product or service design, organisational or technical). As Purchasing is the internal/external interface, this function may have an impact on the companies' ability to innovate. Beyond the suppliers' contribution, and within the other departments, the purpose of this thesis is to help clarify and characterise innovation by the Purchasing department, a multi-faceted notion, as well as identify the endogenous and exogenous factors conducive to innovation

Full textModification of the environment and the rapidly changing business world have forced companies to reorganize their services. In this context the purchasing function becomes an administrative function to a strategic function, impacting the performance of the company and its ability to create value directly. This thesis aims to analyze the value creation of the purchasing function by focusing on the role of the buyer. Our research is based on the analysis of the transformation of a purchasing function within the framework of a research contract in an international food company. The analytical methodology is qualitative, based on the use of Nvivo10 Lexical analysis software. They were put in perspective with the eyes of relevant themes from the case theoretical frameworks. Research shows that the buyer can both create value through the actions of productivity, and entrepreneurial activities that foster the development of sales. The results conceptualize the buyer and highlight the need for the buyer to hold, in addition to technical skills, Meta-competencies that will seize the opportunities of the ecosystem to transform them into marketable products or services. These Meta-competencies differentiate means employees and effective contributors; they can support the technical skills and acquire new ones. They attach to the behaviors and personal skills and are related to the personality of the individual. Finally, the thesis proposes an integrative skills model of the buyer, which accounts for the preponderance of Meta-skills as the basis of the ability of the buyer to create value

Full textVocation of our research, is to determine and understand in an exploratory way the role of the professionalization of the function and more particularly of purchasing marketing, innovation and change management on companies’ competitiveness. To proceed, our study was based on a conceptual model and assumptions via a mixed analysis to a population of 174 people mainly from the purchasing function. Our contributions come to enrich the theoretical corpus by management from the purchasing function, the professionalization, purchasing marketing, change management, innovation, and competitiveness. From a managerial point of view, our research establishes an incentive to reconsider the management of the purchasing function to take benefit of all its value creation potential

Full textNowadays, the Purchasing part represents 50 to 90% of a product’s or service’s cost price according to the activity sector. Purchasing is a very strategic activity because the firm’s competitiveness depends on the professionalism with which it is carried out. The purchaser’s function is always changing and specializing. Thus, the characterization issue of skills, especially behavioural and metacognitive aspects, and skills development have become a fundamental subject. Our research will be dedicated to identifying these skills aspects and knowledge in order to be an ” ideal purchaser” according to recruiting officers and purchasers themselves. Learning and skills development will be an important part of our research too. Our research is based on a qualitative abductive approach. In this context, we have appealed to two separate opinion groups, based on personalized interviews: - “the experts ” that we define as such for their know-how in a purchaser selection processes, - the purchasers themselves, both seniors and juniors. In the end, it is a systemic approach that we propose. It involves all the players of characterization and development skills : experts, purchasers and training schools. They are all turning their efforts to the same performance objective that the environment imposes on them. The role of each stakeholder is to work together for the recognition of Purchasing as a strategic function

Full textThe evolution of Procurement function over the past decades requires to take a new perspective to understand how Procurement managers can contribute to the firm’s competitiveness and support the strategy of the organisation. For this, we use the bounded rationality theory to examine the decision-making process in Procurement. Our study follows the tradition of Behavioural research in Management field by considering the heuristics and the consequent cognitive biases. We use advances from Behavioural Economics in order to understand the effects of psychological, social, cognitive, and emotional factors on the decisions of Procurement managers and we aim to explain why and how their behaviour does not follow the predictions of economic models. For these purposes, this study takes empirical examinations of the decisions in the various steps of the Procurement cycle using qualitative and quantitative data. Three main studies have been performed. First, we identify and depict the main cognitive biases affecting the decisions of Buyers. Second, we aim to understand if there is a statistically significant difference between the Buyers of goods and Buyers of services with regard to the main cognitive biases they are prone to exhibiting. Third, a case study illustrates how the main cognitive biases emerge in the Procurement decisions and how stakeholders from other departments influence the decisions in Procurement space. This dissertation ultimately seeks to demonstrate that increasing the realism of the psychological underpinnings of the decisions in the Procurement space will help the organisations to recognise and potentially avoid decision errors and thus contribute to an increase the organisation’s competitiveness

Full textSupply Chain Management (SCM) is an important part of most companies and applying the appropriate strategy is essential for managers in competitive industries and markets. In this context, Inventory Management plays a crucial role. Different inventory systems are widely used in practice. However, it is fundamentally difficult to optimize, especially in multi-echelon networks. A key challenge in managing inventory is dealing with uncertainties in supply and demand. The simultaneous decrease of customer service and increase of inventory-related costs are the most significant effects of such uncertainties. To deal with this pattern, supply chain managers need to establish more effective and more flexible sourcing and distribution strategies. In this thesis, a “framework to optimize inventory decisions in multi-echelon distribution networks under supply and demand uncertainty” is proposed. In the first part of the research work, multi-echelon distribution systems, subject to demand uncertainty, are studied. Such distribution systems are one of the most challenging inventory network topologies to analyze. The optimal inventory and sourcing policies for these systems are not yet unknown. We consider a basic type of distribution network with a single family product through a periodic review setting. Based on this property, a two-stage mixed integer programming approach is proposed to find the optimal inventory-related decisions considering the non-stationary demand pattern. The model, which is based on a Distribution Requirements Planning (DRP) approach, minimizes the expected total cost composed of the fixed allocation, inventory holding, procurement, transportation, and back-ordering costs. Alternative inventory optimization models, including the lateral transshipment strategy and multiple sourcing, are thus built, and the corresponding stochastic programs are solved using the sample average approximation method. Several problem instances are generated to validate the applicability of the model and to evaluate the benefit of lateral transshipments and multiple sourcing in reducing the expected total costs of the distribution network. An empirical investigation is also conducted to validate the numerical findings by using the case of a major French retailer’s distribution network. The second part of the research work is focused on the structure of the optimal inventory policy which is investigated under supply disruptions. A two-stage stochastic model is proposed to solve a capacitated multi-echelon inventory optimization problem considering a stochastic demand as well as uncertain throughput capacity and possible inventory losses, due to disruptions. The model minimizes the total cost, composed of fixed allocation cost, inventory holding, transportation and backordering costs by optimizing inventory policy and flow decisions. The inventory is controlled according to a reorder point order-up-to-level (s, S) policy. In order to deal with the uncertainties, several scenario samples are generated by Monte Carlo method. Corresponding sample average approximations programs are solved to obtain the adequate response policy to the inventory system under disruptions. In addition, extensive numerical experiments are conducted. The results enable insights to be gained into the impact of disruptions on the network total cost and service level. In both parts of the research, insights are offered which could be valuable for practitioners. Further research possibilities are also provided

Full textThis thesis explores the role of inter-organizational integration and product integration as two constituent dimensions of supplier integration into product development with three essays. The first essay is a systematic review of literature on supplier integration. It identifies product integration as a dimension that is scarcely incorporated in the conceptualization of supplier integration. In order to fill the gaps identified in the literature review, we build a conceptual model that incorporates concepts from Information Processing Theory and Modularity Theory. The second essay investigates this conceptual model with an embedded case study in a defense company. This essay shows that the governance of the relationship between a buyer and a supplier is related to an understudied concept in the product design literature, namely product interfaces. The third essay is a theoretical development of product interfaces as an element that determines product and organization design. This essay defines micro-foundational interface properties theoretically and provides examples from the telecommunications, automotive and aircraft industries as supportive evidence. Overall, this thesis points out the importance of product interfaces as elements that can increase information processing requirements of supplier integration into product development

Full textIn the current industrial context, the offer is largely higher than the demand. Therefore, the customers are more and more exigent. To distance themselves, companies need to offer to their customers the best quality products, the best costs, and with controlled lead times as short as possible. Last years, the struggle for reducing costs was accentuated within companies. However, stocks represent an important financial asset, and therefore, it is essential to control them. In addition, a bad management of stocks led either to delays in delivery, which generate additional production costs, either to the unnecessary inventory. The latter one can occur at different levels (from components at the last level to finished product), it costs money and immobilize funds. That is why, planners have to look for efficient methods of production and supply planning, to know exactly for each component, and when to order and in which quantity. The aim of this doctoral thesis is to investigate the supply planning in an uncertain environment. We are interested in a replenishment planning for multi-level assembly systems under a fixed demand and uncertainty of components lead times. We consider that each component has a fixed unit inventory cost; the finished product has an inventory cost and a backlogging cost per unit of time. Then, a general mathematical model for replenishment planning of multi-level assembly systems, genetic algorithm and branch and bound method are presented to calculate and to optimize the expected value of the total cost which equals to the sum of the inventory holding costs for the components, the backlogging and the inventory holding costs for the finished product. We can state by the different results that the convergence of the GA doesn't depend only on the number of components in the last level but also on the number of levels, the type of the BOM and the backlogging cost for the finished product
