Abstract:
The monograph describes modern theoretical and practical approaches to managing the advanced development of high-tech industries and industrial organizations in conditions of economic instability. The mechanisms of transition of organizations to the trajectory of advanced development are described. Approaches to the creation of radically new products are proposed in order to achieve advanced development, as well as the development of the fundamentals of the theory of competitiveness management. The methodological apparatus and tools for assessing and managing the advanced development of high-tech industries and organizations have been formed, taking into account the main factors affecting their development. For scientists, economists and practitioners: managers and specialists of industrial and scientific production organizations dealing with management and building business processes, as well as students and postgraduates studying in areas of training and specialties related to economic sciences.

Full text
Abstract:
This book extends the so-called new mobilities paradigm by focusing such theoretical advances on South Asian scholarship. When it comes to analytical approaches to movement, the intellectual trajectory of mobilities work has been tremendously provocative, particularly in the last fifteen years. However, much of that literature remains deeply rooted in Western/Northern geographies, ontologies, and priorities. This volume pushes beyond those earlier approaches to center South Asia as a critical site through which scholars can advance new theoretical and empirical research, diversify extant mobilities studies, and pose a challenge to Western models. Through a diverse set of interdisciplinary chapters, the collection makes a sustained argument about the value of decentering (im)mobilities research. In so doing, ‘South Asia on the Move’ redirects the regional, theoretical, and methodological foci of the mobilities turn, demonstrating the relevance of South Asia for thinking about movement within the region and around the world.

Dianne, Otto. Part II Approaches, Ch.24 Feminist Approaches to International Law. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780198701958.003.0025.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter describes encounters between feminism and international law in four parts. It begins by outlining the diversity of feminist visions for (and against) international law to highlight the dynamism of the field, the contestation between its various political and legal commitments, and the different ways that the feminist subject of law is conceived. Secondly, the chapter examines the range of critical analyses that feminists have developed in the wake of a particular 1991 American Journal of International Law (AJIL) article. The chapter then explores the trajectories of feminist reform projects in international law. Lastly, this chapter highlights the paradoxes of feminist engagement with international law, arguing that the practices of critique and reform, and their productive tensions, are essential to resisting the law’s colonization of feminist politics and keeping feminist imaginaries of a better world alive.

Vail, Mark I. Introduction National Liberalisms in Illiberal States. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190683986.003.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter situates the book in theoretical and empirical contexts. It provides a brief overview of competing theoretical approaches to explaining trajectories of economic reform in continental Europe in the era of austerity and transnational neoliberalism since the early 1990s. Since standard analyses of “neoliberal” reform fail to capture these dynamics of economic reform in continental Europe, as do conventional institutionalist and interest-based accounts, it argues for an approach that emphasizes the political power of ideas and highlights the influence of national liberal traditions—French “statist liberalism,” German “corporate liberalism,” and Italian “clientelist liberalism.” It provides a brief overview of the remainder of the book, which uses a study of national liberal traditions to explain trajectories of reform in fiscal, labor-market, and financial policies in France, Germany, and Italy, three countries that have rejected neoliberal approaches to reform in a neoliberal age.

Rocker, Graeme M., Joanne Michaud-Young, and Robert Horton. Caring for the patient with advanced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199656097.003.0152.

Full text
Abstract:
The global prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is high and rising. Patients and families living with advanced disease often experience biopsychosocial symptom burdens over a long trajectory, leaving them housebound when they require support the most. Current models of care, by placing a disproportionate focus on the provision of acute and facility-based services, do little to address the complex needs of those vulnerable patients and families who struggle to easily access primary care services. This chapter provides an overview of conventional COPD treatments and highlights some newer understandings and management approaches for patients living with high symptom burden despite optimized conventional treatments, including the use of opioids. It provides some concrete examples of models of care that employ interventions and holistic approaches to care that can improve patient and family outcomes. The move towards an integrated care approach to COPD will help patients and their families reach informed decisions about their care throughout the trajectory of COPD.

Jensen, Lene Arnett. The Cultural-Developmental Approach to Moral Psychology. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190879228.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter details the cultural-developmental approach to moral psychology. This conceptual framework lays out life-course “templates” for the three Ethics of Autonomy, Community, and Divinity. These life course trajectories are not fixed but accommodate to cultural variability by addressing: (1) whether or not an Ethic emerges, (2) when it emerges, and (3) the slope and specific characteristics of its development. As described, the formulation of the cultural-developmental approach was based on a large body of long-standing research findings, as well as research with religiously conservative and liberal groups divided by the so-called “culture wars.” Recent research has also extended the cultural-developmental hypotheses and validated new measures of the three Ethics. The conclusion proposes future research directions for moral psychology, and the application of the conceptual idea of cultural-developmental templates to other areas of psychology.

Drevon, Jerome. Institutionalizing Violence. Oxford University PressNew York, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780197643693.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Institutionalizing Violence offers a detailed focus on the two most influential Egyptian jihadi groups—al-Jama‘a al-Islamiyya and Islamic Jihad. From the killing of Egyptian president Anwar Sadat in 1981 to their partial association with al-Qaeda in the 1990s, the two groups illustrate the range of choices that jihadis make overtime including creating political parties. Jerome Drevon argues that these groups’ comparative trajectories show that jihadis embracing the same ideology can make very different strategic decisions in similar environments. Drevon’s analysis of these groups’ histories over the past four decades illustrates the evolution of jihadism in Egypt and beyond. Institutionalizing Violence develops an institutional approach to radicalization to compare the two Egyptian groups’ trajectories based on ethnographic field research and hundreds of interviews with jihadi leaders and militants in Egypt. Drevon provides a unique perspective on how jihadi groups make and implement new strategic decisions in changing environments, as well as the evolution of their approaches to violence and non-violence.

Full text
Abstract:
Virtue approaches to communication ethics have experienced a resurgence over the last decades. Tied to rhetoric since the time of Aristotle, virtue ethics offers scholars in the broad field of communication an approach to ethics based on character and human flourishing as an alternative to deontology. In each major branch of communication scholarship, the turn to virtue ethics has followed a distinctive trajectory in response to concerns about the adequacy of theoretical foundations for academic and applied work in communication ethics. Recent approaches to journalism and media ethics integrate moral psychology and virtue ethics to focus on moral exemplars, drawing on the work of Philippa Foot and Rosalind Hursthouse, or explore journalism as a MacIntyrean tradition of practice. Recent work in human communication ethics draws on MacIntyre’s approach to narrative, situating communication ethics within virtue structures that protect and promote particular goods in a moment of narrative and virtue contention.

Full text
Abstract:
A variety of techniques for extracting information from data are presented, from pedestrian approaches such as the centuries old linear least-squares fit, to elegant binned and unbinned likelihood fits. A treatment of statistical combination of data leads to an introduction to the powerful Kalman filter approach, used to determine optimal estimates of deterministic-stochastic systems. In experimental physics the Kalman filter is used estimate trajectories from data, but it also finds applications in industrial process control, and in the aeronautics and robots industries. These techniques typically rely on either analytic or numerical optimization of an objective function. Orthogonal series density estimation, a Fourier technique, is also discussed.

Full text
Abstract:
In this chapter, findings from a long-term, cohort-sequential, multigenerational study of cigarette smoking are used to illustrate the importance of a developmental approach for (1) understanding trajectories of smoking behavior (in relation to other forms of tobacco use) and the conditions and challenges of the developmental periods that show transitions in smoking status (particularly adolescent smoking onset and challenges for parents with adolescent children), (2) understanding heterogeneity in these trajectories because differing trajectories may have different etiological underpinnings as well as different implications for the intergenerational transmission of smoking, (3) recognizing that development unfolds within the larger context of societal and historical change and that societal change can influence outcomes, and (4) considering development within a family systems and multigenerational context.

Abstract:
Despite various problems associated with the practice of zooarchaeology in the neotropics, archaeologists have recovered impressive evidence from caves and open air sites for early landscape management and food production in northwestern South America, a region renowned for harbouring elevated species richness and high rates of endemism. The trajectory for subsequent pre-Columbian cultural developments in the area was established very early through the precocious achievements of its earliest Holocene human occupations. Archaeobiological evidence is used to outline the subsequent development and elaboration of indigenous agricultural systems and trade networks up to their cataclysmic encounter with invading European populations in the early sixteenth century.
