Full textDecision makers in public health system, such as the one in the province of Quebec, have a growing need for assessment tools to support their decisions on the interventions to implement. This master’s thesis proposes a generic simulator optimized for public health issues, while being extensible to other areas. It details the software architecture and all the features that make it a tool of choice for decision makers. It also presents the optimization of existing intervention strategies using Monte Carlo reinforcement learning. This includes the proposal of a new algorithm for selecting actions when learning on populations of individuals evolving in parallel. We conclude with the application of this infrastructure to two public health issues : diabetic retinopathy, that has already been the subject of work by other researchers, and osteoporosis, a current application that has been validated by health care specialists.

Full textOver the past two decades, practical training seems to have become a key factor in ensuring the skills development of future Québec elementary and secondary teachers in a professionalizing perspective. This collaborative research has three main phases from which we were inspired to write three articles. These three phases are linked to the object of doctoral research: the development, by trainers of student-trainees, of a development trajectory for professional competence. Designing teaching-learning situations for Four internships within the baccalaureate in high school education. The first phase focuses on the perceptions of student-trainee trainers on the development and formative evaluation of the four professional competencies related to the act of teaching. Through an electronic questionnaire sent to 352 trainers, 52 of whom responded, we wanted to identify their perceptions before initiating the research. This in order to obtain working leads in relation to the choice of professional competence that would be flattened by the co-production of a development trajectory. The second phase corresponds to the cosituation of collaborative research. We analyzed the discourse of seven trainers in the negotiation of meaning they led to define the concept of professional competence and competence in the design of learning situations. Finally, the last stage corresponds to the co-operation and the co-production of the object, ie the development of a development trajectory accompanied by professional situations in which vocational competence will be mobilized as well as the resource domains available to student- Trainees. The last article analyzes the content of the three meetings that took place with the student-trainee trainers to arrive at the co-production of the course. In addition to the development trajectory, the results give rise to the challenges encountered by student-trainee trainers in their accompanying work: their representations of the professional competences linked to the act of teaching are not shared Given the few moments they have to discuss. The results also demonstrate the need to negotiate the meaning of their representations in order to develop the development trajectory. In addition, the two articles present an experiential look at the two communities of practice established during this research and present the challenges faced with the trainers.

Full textThis thesis deals with the methods of learning and criticizing the rules of public communication by student representatives during the student strike in 2012 in Quebec. Taking into account the particular characteristics of student organizations and the conditions in which student representatives learn the rudiments of the roles of press officer and spokesperson, this paper proposes to study the modalities of learning and criticism of rules of public communication. New actors who do not benefit from the same human and financial resources as government and media actors, but with whom they publicly debated during the 2012 student strike. How did they learn the rules of public communication in an intense and animated public debate which subsequently degenerated into a social crisis? As a result of the 2012 experience, these individuals became much more known and recognized, and gained notoriety. We want to understand how the different ways of learning about the rules of public communication depend on the particular environment and the context in which the student representatives were at that time. We also want to focus on the content of learning and criticism to better understand what kinds of rules are learned and what are their strategic functions. The research is based on a qualitative interview analysis of the public affair program 24 heures en 60 minutes, on RDI, and a series of semi-conducted interviews with student representatives. Keywords: Criticism of rules of public communication; Learning; New players; Public debate; Student strike of 2012

Full textOur study focuses on describing and understanding the negotiation of meaning (Wenger, 2005) as it unfolded among members of a team from the Ministère de l'Éducation, des loisirs et du sport (MELS), who adopted the community of practice model of professional development. This community was in charge of implementing the action plan for improving the quality of French. It provided training and support for teachers of primary- and secondary-school French in Quebec. The data-gathering process took place over a period of four years. Ethnography-based methodology emphasized distance participant observation, meaning being present while the community carried out its work, and note-taking. An analysis of the community’s working documents (including the written record of an electronic forum), the conducting of interviews, and the administering of a survey were the other elements that completed the data-gathering process used throughout. A cross-sectional analysis of the data gathered made it possible to sort out and highlight more clearly the key processes and point to the specific purposes that the negotiation of meaning espoused in context. We then drew from this analysis the components of the professional-development program that the community devoted its energies to constructing.

Full textThis study was conducted within the context of the Remote Networked School (RNS) initiative in Quebec, Canada. An elementary classroom made use of a collaborative digital space (Knowledge Forum) for arts education. It supported the conduct of activities related to two shared objects, the appreciation of arts and crafts and the creation of an art object. This study focused on classroom discourse regarding these objects. Our results show that students were able to make contributions that advance their classroom discourse regarding the shared objects. By interacting with each other, they created knowledge artifacts and developed their own artistic language. Moreover, educational implications were drawn for encouraging students to participate during arts education activities using collaborative digital tools.

Full textThe changes in educational practices proposed by recent works in the learning sciences, the curriculum reform in the Province of Quebec and the possibilities offered by information and communication technologies (ICT) to support collaborative learning are contributing factors to the transformation of learning environments. Aspiring to prepare future teachers adequately to this reality, the study reports accounts of the perception and use of opportunities put forward to enhance and sustain high-school pre-service teachers’ collaborative reflective analysis process. The concept of affordance, to which we attributed a social meaning to the one coined by James J. Gibson (1979) and refined by Donald Norman (1983) and William Gaver (1991), was used as part of our framework. Design experiment was conducted with nine groups of students from the Fall 2002 term to the Winter 2005 term. Field experience was anchored to a networked learning community context where constructivist and social constructivist perspectives are important. Students’ participation to this context was sustained by multiple possibilities of interaction, social and digital, all along their trajectory. Results show that most of the affordances put forward were perceived accordingly to what was designed. They scaffolded integration and participation of students to the networked classroom context and they encouraged deliberative and emancipatory reflectivity (Van Manen, 1977). In some instances, the reflective analysis process was transformed into knowledge building (Bereiter & Scardamalia, 1993). Changes have been noticed in the vocabulary used by pre-service teachers from one group to another. Moreover, results unfold the potential of sociodigital affordances for deep learning. We noticed an increasing level of complexity in the questions addressed by students over time. As we conclude this research, we propose implications for designing learning environment and teaching teachers.

Full textThis study takes place within the context of the Remote Networked School initiative, which began in 2002 to enrich the learning environment of small rural schools through a variety of means, including the use of Knowledge Forum (KF) to support the collective written discourse of students. Our focus is on a new feature of Knowledge Forum, called IPROM. This study is primarily interested in the students’ use of the tool as they select promising ideas. Special attention is given to students' understanding of the tool as a knowledge building affordance and to the teachers' perceptions of the tool's effectiveness. Our results show that as they used the IPROM tool, students increased the level of complexity of the questions they asked as well as improved the explanations they provided. We foresee several pedagogical implications likely to encourage knowledge building as a classroom process supported by this new tool.

Full textThe Baccalauréat en Intervention sportive (BIS) is a three-year, undergraduate program at Université Laval that specializes in coach education and includes three internships as part of its curriculum. During their internships, student-coaches were required to complete a reflective journal. The objective of this study was to identify the topics the student-coaches chose to write about in their reflective journals during their two-year internships in the BIS. Data were gathered from the journal entries of six novice student-coaches of team sports over two seasons, showing the breadth and the reoccurrence of topics by way of emerging themes. The results offered insight into the experiences of these novice student-coaches and suggested that they most often write about actions – their mentor coaches’ and their own. Through agreeing or disagreeing (saying they would do something differently than their mentor) with their mentors’ actions, they wrote about short-term planning, long-term planning and teaching in practice situations, and in game situations about choice of strategy, game management and motivating athletes. When agreeing with their own actions they wrote about short-term planning/teaching choices, taking initiative/showing leadership, and connecting with athletes. When disagreeing with their own actions (saying they would do something differently next time) they wrote about short-term planning/teaching choices and taking initiative/showing leadership. When writing about their own actions, they also proposed actions they should take that communicated three objectives: to enhance their learning, to broaden their competencies, and to improve their teaching. These principle conclusions suggest that the student-coaches notice actions as triggers for their reflection, and that they seem to judge the actions they notice against an implicit vision of coaching effectiveness. They contribute to the limited empirical research on the coach as a reflective practitioner by providing insight into what novice coaches notice, a starting point for better understanding how they see the complex practice that is coaching, and an important first step in beginning a reflective process. The principle advantage that the BIS internships can offer is a context in which to investigate reflective practice with novice developmental coaches. This coaching population, outside of the BIS context, is transient and mostly volunteer-based, making research on their development a challenge. This study is the first of what will be a sustained line of inquiry on how development coaches learn to coach, and more specifically on their development as reflective practitioners.

Full textIn this master thesis, we tried to determine the real influence of social rehabilitation programs on the risk of recidivism. To do this, we used a machine learning algorithm to analyze a database provided by the Quebec Ministry of Public Security (MSP). In this database, we are able to follow the numerous incarcerations of 97,140 prisoners from 2006 to 2018. Our analysis focuses only on inmates who have served in the prison in Quebec City. The approach we used is named Generalized Random Forests (GRF) and was developed by Athey et al. (2019). Our main analysis focuses not only on the characteristics of the prisoners, but also on the results they obtained when they were subjected to the LS/CMI, an extensive questionnaire aimed at determining the criminogenic needs and the risk level of the inmates . We also determined which variables have the most influence on predicting the treatment effect by using a function of the same algorithm that calculates the relative importance of each of the variables to make a prediction. By comparing participants and non-participants, we were able to demonstrate that participating in a program reduces the risk of recidivism by approximately 6.9% for a two-year trial period. Participating in a program always reduces significantly recidivism no matter the definition of recidivism used. We also determined that in terms of personal characteristics, it is the age, the nature of the offence and the number of years of study that are the main predictors for the individual causal effects. As for the LS/CMI, only a few sections of the questionnaire have real predictive power while others, like the one about leisure, do not. In light of our results, we believe that a more efficient instrument capable of predicting recidivism can be created by focusing on the newly identified variables with the greatest predictive power. A better instrument will make it possible to provide better counselling to prisoners on the programs they should follow, and thus increase their chances of being fully rehabilitated.

Full textThe planning of large-scaled road projects is facing a crisis of public acceptability. During the last few decades, road projects have stopped being associated with progress, to become a subject of debate among western societies. Since the 1970s, the Quebec Ministry of Transportation (MTQ) has been, and is still facing major conflicts in the planning of road projects, especially in urban neighbourhoods. The impacts to urban fabric by new road networks have created strong oppositions. Therefore, these large-scale projects are more difficult to implement in a societal context where diverging stakeholder views make it difficult to attain consensus or integrated solutions. By using the concept of organizational learning, this thesis answers a double interrogation. It searches to understand how the implementation of road projects relates to stakeholders views and the environmental settings. Secondly, it seeks to understand how the planning practices are evolving from those experiences. The field of study is formed by four case studies of large road projects planned by the MTQ, and the inventory of organizational changes relating to planning practices. By confronting the projects characteristics with the stakeholders positioning, at each step of the procedure, we observed the effects of the public debate on the project design. Also, the analysis of the changes in the planning practices, from one project to another, enables us to identify the organizational learning abilities of the MTQ. Our results identify that the relationship between projects and the environment are much more complex that they were previously, as a new form of ‘territorialisation’ is manifesting itself. The comprehensive planning approach is leaving space for the debate of stakeholders representations, and collaborative approaches are emerging as a result. MTQ planning are now adapting to this new context and in return influence it, by a learning process

Full textThis thesis characterizes how students argue when faced with a structured controversy in a classroom. This learning-teaching strategy will allow us to elaborate a grid to guide students and teachers for the construction or their arguments. Our text shows the importance of argumentation in a school context when exploring an socioscientific question in order to promote the development of a scientific and technological literacy. This interventionist research was inspired by the Developmental Work Research (DWR) approach, rooted in the sociocultural theoretical framework that is the third generation of activity theory. Working from the epistemological principle of the double stimulation, our research analyzes the way in which the students get out of the problematic situation posed by argumentation in a school setting. The data collection was performed with a group of high school students in Quebec, Canada. The argumentation takes place within an interdisciplinary project entitled Scientific idol, within the Science and technology and French classes. Our analysis identifies various interactions between a student and his, as well as a few recurrent tensions. Also, the characteristics of the arguments used by the students were identified and contributed to the development of our grid. This grid wants to help students overcome problematic situations in a school environment by promoting the sharing of ideas within a team and helping students formulate their arguments. The analysis also brought forward that, to improve argumentation in schools, a more flexible argumentation structure and a greater involvement of students in the choice of the socioscientific question could to be considered. In particular, we have identified the individual/collective dialectic that was present while the student is acting on his environment. This is the originality of our contribution beyong our grid. Key words : Argumentation, structured controversy, socioscientific issues, scientific and technological literacy, activity theory, double stimulation, construction of arguments

Full textAcademic reading comprehension in L2 is shown to be affected by several factors including, but not limited to, vocabulary knowledge, background knowledge, linguistic knowledge, syntactic awareness, reading strategies. However, there seems to be no consensus among previous studies with respect to the type of factors that have the greatest impact on L2 learner’s comprehension of academic texts (Guo & Roehrig, 2011; Nergis, 2013). The present study conducted with a population of 75 Iranian French as a Second Language (FSL) learners enrolled in graduate programs at Laval University (Quebec), seeks to explore the degree to which the knowledge of vocabulary (depth and size), syntactic awareness and metacognitive awareness, facilitate the academic reading comprehension in FSL learner’s. The data was gathered using 5 different instruments: a measure of depth of vocabulary knowledge (Qian & Schedl, 2004), a vocabulary level test (Nation, 1990), a measure of syntactic awareness (Brown, Hammill, Larsen & Wiederholt, 2007), a questionnaire on metacognitive strategies in reading (Taraban, Kerr & Ryneason, 2004) and the reading component of the Test de Connaissance du Français (TCF). The results of the quantitative data analysis indicate that the reading comprehension score is significantly correlated with all other variables and that these associations are all positive though moderate at times. The result of a regression analysis revealed that, for this group of homogeneous learners, the variables Taille3kTotal and PhraseTotal contributed the most to the academic reading comprehension, in French, a third language for our subjects. Our findings are consistent with those obtained by Guo and Roehrig (2011), thus contradicting Nergis’ 2013 conclusions which identified the metacognitive consciousness as the best predictor of reading comprehension.

Full textIn the past few decades, in Quebec, there are significant increases in the prevalence of at-risk-for overweight and overweight among children and adolescents. Moreover, the majority of children and adolescents do not meet daily recommendations for vegetables and fruits (VF) and dairy products (DP) consumption. Therefore, the Quebec education program has encouraged schools to develop new competencies to improve the adoption of healthy lifestyle habits. The Team Nutriathlon, a computer-assisted school-based nutrition intervention, has been created to support this initiative. This program aimed to increase the consumption and variety of VF and DP in children. The aims of this study were (1) to evaluate the impact of Team Nutriathlon, a school-based nutrition intervention, on VF and DP consumption in children, and (2) to evaluate factors that influence the success of the program among high school students. The results of the study show that during and immediately after the program, children in the intervention group consumed more servings of VF and DP compared to the control group. No effect has been shown ten weeks after the program. Students reveal that the use of technology for recording the number of servings, team work, teacher’s and family’s implication and the use of strategies were facilitating factors contributing to the success of the program. Students also revealed that the lack of attendance with the data collection outside of school hours, the user code dysfunction and the incompatibility of the Web platform with students technologic tools (tablet) were barriers for the success of the program.

Full textBusinesses today exist in an environment characterized by endlessly expanding competition, the speed and scope of which are increasing the pressure on both managers and employees. In order to guarantee their long term existence, businesses must continually strive to improve their capacity for success and their organizational competence. Researchers interested in the business world have not failed to notice this and have elaborated different conceptions of this competence or its related phenomena such as organizational learning, organizational capabilities or the dynamic capabilities of an organization. How do the members of an organization go about ensuring the competence of their organization? This is the question I am trying to answer. First, I will make a critical examination of the existing research linked to this question. Then, I will propose a conceptual framework partly based on structuration theory and on the concepts of community of practice and experiential learning. An operational framework will follow in which I justify the choice of a case study, characterize the firm studied, a manufacturer of kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities, indicate how I came to gather materials during a stay of close to six months in this business, and how I exploited these materials. Whether in their daily activities or when facing new situations, managers and employees of the firm, sometimes in an individual manner but most often in a collective manner, will mobilize different structural properties of the firm. When considered useful, they will not hesitate to modify or abandon any of these structural properties or create new ones in order to increase their capabilities of achieving their objectives, particularly in matters concerning human relations, the work climate, production output and quality, productivity and financial returns. This firm succeeds in mobilizing its members, in encouraging experimentation, learning and production of new knowledge which is integrated into its protocols and routines, thus creating a cycle that constantly increases its level of competence.

Full textThe study explored ESL tutoring sessions in the context of the Elluminate platform, a synchronous language management system (SLMS). The participants were ESL pre-service teachers from Québec who provided tutoring to small groups of secondary 1 ESL students located in Mexico. The study focused on three research questions: (1) the types of scaffolding provided by the tutors, (2) the tutors’ perceptions of teaching within this environment, and (3) the learners` perception of their learning experience. Data collection included screen capture of the online sessions and surveys. In addition to the four types of scaffolding previously identified by Pawan (2008) – linguistic, conceptual, social and cultural, a fifth type, particular to the SLMS environment – technical scaffolding, also emerged. Both tutors and ESL students were generally positive about their online experiences.
